Good morning, good evening, and good night! Welcome to the esteemed, phono-menal city of Stefani: your host city for the final contest of 2023. Who will be walking away with the crown? Will Hendinia hold onto their Year-end top spot? Will KEiiNO replicate their Eurovision success here in the BJSC? Stay tuned to find out!

So here’s how the results will work. I will NOT be revealing any scoreboards until 29 (yes 29) votes have been announced. At that halfway point I will post the scoreboard as it stands, and will then we’ll start the ASCENT. From 42nd place, climbing all the way to first I will reveal, country-by-country, just who bagged themselves a hit, and who was just… sh*t (affectionate).

Getting the party started and christening tonight’s votes, we hand over to our host country… ME! Dialling POPHub, please may we have your scores.

Don’t get the impression I’m doing great. There were some really strong pop songs this time round - Altyr, Ramrynia, Taahino, Zanmatony etc. so I’m not completely surprised. Taste Of Heaven doesn’t exactly dominate over some of those, but is a really consistent earworm for me.

That being said, I could be 1st for all I’ve been covering all the other countries

I did spot my song appearing (as the only current BJSC entry other than The Kiffness) in Rich's personal chart yesterday so I was wondering if a Rontvian 18 was on the cards! Wasn't holding my breath too much in case there was an older song you like more but didn't put in your chart or something but yassss at it actually happening the first time ever after all of these years - and I think only the second time I've even been in your medal positions! - thank you very much Rich!

And yay more double figure points in the same post, thank you blacksquare as well *.* (I saw that saying Numayania at first and thought wow that seems an unlikely country to get 11 points from for this entry as well but Neliönoir makes more sense )

Ooh Terra Avium maybe not actually overshadowing me after all (I was really feeling like I might be quite far behind as there were several votes with mid to high points to Terra and nothing to me while I didn't notice many the other way round, wasn't paying enough attention I guess!) Intriguingly close though, the battle is on xx

Harmonica is an interesting potential dark horse, not discussed much but it does make a lot of sense as a song with strong crossover - it's great to see both of the top 2 right now being long running nations who have never won before anyway and both good songs so no complaints from me if either of those win! (still a way to go though of course x)

Tensions is definitely rising

Cadelicia finishing so low is sad, I did fear they were being a little overrated in the odds but not by this much </3 got 8 points from me. Pestolia was a commiseration, it did grow on me a bit but at the end of the day I still just think it was too short to leave the impact it needed to oop!

Aelandor's song didn't really connect with me I'm afraid but ooop at it being so far behind in last...!

FARC was the biggest grower of the month for me, very subtle song but it wormed its way into my head quite a lot by the end, got 6 points from me. Not at all surprised to see it this low though, if anything it's higher than I'd have predicted.

Not a lot of change from the rankings at the bottom end from the halfway mark so far, no obvious 'Poland' candidate yet! (Is that reference becoming too outdated now x)

Aw that's the first big shakeup from the halfway scoreboard (bar Quintessa's deduction obviously), shame Conoria dropped off that much - another commiseration for me but still a strong entry, especially when the guitars start picking up in the second half. (At least it's a higher finish than Dessy Stefanou so still a new peak anyway!)

Aww, I thought I might have done a bit better than that with the predictions but was a bit lower than I thought at the halfway point so was expecting it. Still got a good round of votes from people for it so it's a nice way to end the year.

Sovarasma was yet another commiseration for me (I did have quite a few this month, that's 5/8 of them gone already x but only 3/15 of my actual votes). Yay for a better showing than Sharon Shannon

edit: 6/8 now as Neliönoir was also a commiseration, though got a couple of points from me in the semi at least! I thought the video and to some extent the song too reminded me a bit of my own entry from Baseck earlier in the year.

Kinda wanted Cor Lupus to come 13th again to continue Donna Missal's consistency but ah well x (I don't think this was as good a song as 'Flicker' so fair at it finishing a bit lower, still got 2 points from me though so points to Cor Lupus twice in a row after a long drought before that!)

Abeltesfayeton also with a big drop since the midweeks, dance songs being hammered a bit it seems oops!

26th is decent for Singerpurear, was my 10 pointer but it was all very close for my 9 to 13 pointers so not far off being a medallist.

As one Poland falls out another appears, Land of DW are now up at least 13 now 14 places from the halfway point. (I feel like these movements so far are boding well for me but let me not get too excited!) edit: Lookylion also improved a bit there, up 9 places.

I'm not sure I get why this KEiiNO entry has done so much better than their last one but fair enough I think I'd have been a bit more into it if it was the first song I'd ever heard from them but as it were it feels a little too much like an inferior retread of earlier material. Wasn't super keen on either Danæviia or Aeroche either, both a little on the generic side for me although Dan's did grow on me a bit.

4 of the top 5 being countries who have never won before I'd be happy with any of the remaining songs winning, I'm not personally a huge fan of 'Like A Girl Does' but it's definitely better than Peach PRC's previous entries and Taahino getting a first win would be nice x

SO happy with Taahino doing so well. No two ways about it, even though I marginally prefer Cazzi, if I'd have heard Like A Girl Does before Lindsay confirmed it, I would 100% have sent it but I was about 3 days too late . Banger banger banger! I had hoped it could surprise and go all the way during this final week, but 4th is still fantastic.

Also, not saying that running order makes a huge difference in BJSC like it does in Eurovision and that but... Harmonica winning from 1st in the running order feels impressive too, lots of songs that could've surpassed it in memory for people.

I wanna say a big thank you to all of you sticking this out with me as I tried my best to overcome a lot of difficulties (and pressure)! I've been a part of this contest for nearly 10 years at this point and was starting to feel like I'd never get a chance to host it, so was SHOCKED when Rob DM'd me asking me to do it. I do apologise if there are any errors, and also for how drawn out the results were... although I hope you've enjoyed yourself in POPHub! CONGRATS HARMONICA!

Well done Jordan, we love a surprise winner! And just about being another winner I voted for as it just snuck 1 point from me, first winner that I've voted for since hemlocke springs! Ending the year with 5 winners I voted for and 5 that I didn't, a much better ratio than last year.

Utopia now becoming the 5th country to (currently) have 3+ 2nd place finishes without a win, along with Kluminican Republic (5), D'yermak'er and Ramrynia (4 each) and Espen (also 3) - so close but still a great result, that was my 7 pointer.

Wow!!! Nice to celebrate my 10th year in BJSC with a very first win! (Although maybe I should wait for the votes and Bray's scoreboard to be posted just in case ) Either way, lovely to share the top 2 with Utopia, with one of my favorite entries of theirs.

I heard the MisterWives song just in passing a few weeks ago, thought it sounded like a smash, then second-guessed myself after realizing it was a year old and that no one else had tried to send it. Glad to have gone with my gut on this one!

Fab winner and LONG overdue for Harmonica as well. So happy for Jordan. I didn't point Utopia's as it didn't quite click for me but nevertheless brill for them to nab a top 2 in so long as well and Kath top 3 is good too. Nowhere quite near my fave by them but happy to see they brought it back after the hiccup last month!

I've got a few songs in different positions from Callum's final scoreboard but the top 2 is correct so Harmonica are free to get the champagne out

(and I'll just be adding even more salt to my plate because I am actually a place lower by my count but just going through to make sure I haven't made errors myself now x)

Although based on Rob's self-reporting I guess there should really be a 15% deduction for Hendinia so that does put me back in 19th x
edit: nevermind, I was apparently mistaken, 20th and another plate of salt it is x

I actually only had different points totals for 2 countries but it does make a pretty huge difference for one of those! (and no difference at all to the other one)

The one that doesn't make any difference is Taahino being 2 points lower - but the other difference is Abeltesfayeton being 18 points higher and with the scoreboard around the 2nd quarter being so close that is enough to lift it all the way from 23rd to 10th (!!) so a belated congrats to Nate picking up a first top 10 hit! Mildly gutted it's at the expense of Land of DW being in the top 10 whoops but 11th is still better than I'd have predicted for 'Wave' tbf.

Here's the correct final scoreboard (other than the above, I have just added in the 15% deduction for Hendinia - sorry Rob but http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=267802&view=findpost&p=7472390 so I hope you won't be too mad! - and swapped the Pestolia/Cadelicia tiebreak as the former did actually get 1 more vote):

I see I only got 6 extra votes from the last 28 voters so no wonder I slumped a bunch from the midweeks but saved a bit by those being mostly pretty high points, thanks to Savan for a third gold and Iz for the silver, !!! and Meekul for further double figure points and Jade and Roba for the last few <3

I definitely got too swept up in getting a bit of late hype and good reactions on SyncTube and got in my head that I might do a bit better than I did (and I think it is my favourite of my own entries this year so a bit of a shame it didn't end up being my biggest hit) but at the end of the day a top 20 and 5 medal positions is really nothing to complain about, especially as it was only 11 points away from the top 10, Chez/Rich/Nate all lucking out a bit to get the last 3 top 10 slots with so many other contenders so close behind!

And if nothing else it's quite the moment that I get to finally scratch getting a gold from FSR Rontvia off my bucket list.

Plus special mention to Colm who I wouldn’t have had predicted as high as 11th so that feels like a good result. FARC that low down though?

26th isn’t too shoddy for Melenas. It’s been a grower for me and is now one of my favourite FLJ entries this year… (oddly my winner is probably my personal least favourite oooops ) and I’m happy that I sent something in Spanish for the first time

Congratulations Jordan, very nice winner - I was rooting for Karma Kid out of the top 2 but I've always rated MisterWives as a band and the song is good as normal from them, so even though it missed my votes I'm happy with that. But really pleased to see 'The Gates Will Open' so much in contention for the win, I'd underrated it in that regard but it was solidly in my votes all the way, great discovery - and of course a good fresh top 2 xx

'One Hand Behind The Devil' criminally low, I'd say I wish I'd given it the 18 to push it up like half the top 20 but apparently the best song in the contest was going to get a third of its votes from my 18 so actually 'LIQUOR FISH & CIGARETTES' also really needed it, criminal that that has suddenly become the lowest scoring finalist of the year, it's so fun

as for myself, a fair average finish to an average year but I've righted the ship a bit with my niches, got a few more directions I'm good to go in for January.

Very well done Harmonica, after all this time *.* I didn't see that coming at all, sorry I missed it from my odds, what a fail! At least got 2nd and 3rd in the top two in my odds, both sounded big. Shame for Utopia to narrowly miss there, although I didn't vote for either of the top two, maybe for the first time in many years, not that I disliked them. Nice to see Taahino in the top five, I wouldn't have called Ramrynia there - KEiiNO do their sound well though, it will always have a market. Fab to see Dan's do so well, mid 90s style house like that doesn't always light up the scoreboard the way it should. Overall, some different names up at the top this month, which is always a welcome sight.

although, I did much prefer both other songs in the top 3 - Utopia and Kathaldazia making it so high is great to see to make up for the underperformance of Eastovka and Numayania

I do wonder if 'Time' coming so soon after I sent 'What Matters' hurt this a little, it's one of the reasons I decided against sending it myself
and poor Spiritbox will one day make up for missing the top 30 of the final twice with a big hit just as Peach PRC did this month perhaps

8th is a unique position so that's even better *.* I genuinely never expected anything like this high for a song like this and I didn't even show up in half the odds, really lovely surprise to see something you sent as a risk really pay off. It really stood out to me a lot when I heard it on 6Music, and given that's at 6:45 in the morning, it takes a good song to wake me up! Thanks all for voting <3

Misterwives did strike me as something that would do quite well given their past popularity, I didn't vote for it but it was decent, and of course very pleased to see Harmonica get a long overdue win, especially after so many DNQs this year! Karma Kid was a real highlight, really glad to see it do so well, not a lot I voted for in the top 10 otherwise, but Abeltesfayeton getting top 10 is great, that was a tune and makes up for their other undeserved flops this year.

Very pleased to see Land of DW and Spod do well too, not a bad showing for fellow #postpunkbloc member too x (probably would've got more from me had I had time for more listens sorry :x). A shame Singerpurear, Fljotavik and Seyetana couldn't be a bit higher, but all quite niche so not a bad showing x

I thought the entry is quite pop (maybe my impression on pop is quite skewed perhaps due to my most played genre being Alt Z ) so wasn't as surprised as others about it winning. It's an okay year for us as I got 2 top 10 though with 4 gutting DNQs. Hopefully it will be a better year for me next year!

Brilliant winning song, I liked MisterWives - Wrongside from last year so was hoping I'd like this as much, and I prefer it - I thought it could do well too! At the same time I'm sorry to see RFC miss out by a small margin, Utopia would have had my 1 point if I'd been in semi 2 and very nearly made it into my final votes, albeit probably not far enough. Great to see my bronze medallist Kath take bronze here, and the EOY with it! A bit unlucky for my gold and silver medallists to end up 21st and 11th but well done Nate, fab to see a fellow 2023 newbie landing a top 10 too!

Wow a gold swap thank you so much Jade (Sladakissnia?), we also had the same 15 and 13 pointers the other way around! Oh, I really DID only just finish like 18th in the semi so my fears were founded this time round! With that in mind, I already thought 14th was a success but from a projected finish of ~38th, it's a HUGE improvement.

Congratulations Harmonica, I’m disappointed but not surprised that I only just qualified but it’s still my best result in a while.

It would have been nice for Ben to qualify, mostly to have a mini-2009-era-Chart-Mod reunion, but also os it was a remix of one of my fav songs of all time. Give him free entry to the final with the same song next time?

would be fairer to just give Ben an AQ in the next contest with a fresh song I'd think? rather than have him compete with the same song again or have two entries

in the past when this happened it was just tough luck for whoever got wrongly denied a qualifier anyhow but precedent could be changed moderator willing

FWIW I'd have only given 'Ti Sento' one point in the final (I ranked everything before going on holiday)

Yeah realistically it’s unlikely that Ben has missed out on a big hit if it finished 20th in the semi final. Getting an AQ next time for this song feels like a double punishment in a way as it’s likely to finish pretty low in the final given its form here.

If it were me then I think I’d rather just send something different.

I've raised the issue in the mod forum and didn't want to comment until the other mods have replied but I will say that I definitely wouldn't want to have the same song appearing in 2 different contests for any reason (and I'm not sure Ben would want that either for the reason dandy* said!) - I'm open to the idea of granting an auto-qualifier in the next contest but please don't take this post as a guarantee that will happen as I'm not a dictator here x

This isn't the first time something like this has happened and indeed there's no previous precedent for the response to be anything more than an apology (not that that means we can't change that now ofc). There have been a few more cases where errors in the semi spreadsheets have been spotted a lot quicker so the incorrect DNQs were just allowed into the final without throwing out the 'wrong' qualifier, but in this case unfortunately Callum didn't notice it until very close to the deadline by which point it was much too late to do that without serious disruption to the contest as I believe at least 20 or so people had already voted.

There's only so much that can be done to ensure that the semi results are 100% accurate short of the rather extreme measure of making all of the votes viewable for the mods as well - ironically enough imaduck is in some sense the most reliable host we've ever had because I did have access to his semi spreadsheets so was able to see and verify all the votes ahead of semi results, but this is not something that I'd want to be the case every month (it does spoil a bit of the fun and mystery when you know the semi results already x), we can't expect every host to get the spreadsheet stuff totally right every time. Obviously it sucks for anyone who finds out they're denied a rightful qualifier but unfortunately it is kind of just part of the game that it happens every now and then (I think something like this even happened in the real Eurovision a couple of years ago ) - realistically there are probably lots more incorrect DNQs from over the years that we don't even know about due to uncorrected and undetectable errors!

For what it's worth at least in this case Cadelicia did of course actually get more points than Ben's Sanctuary, so although Ben's Sanctuary should indeed rightfully have qualified, it would only have been by something of a fluke anyway.

Aside, I should also point out for transparency that there was another issue with the semi 2 spreadsheet as Republic of Adonia's votes accidentally got left off entirely at first - that didn't affect any of the qualifiers (Cadelicia and Ben's Sanctuary both got points and both stayed in the same position) but it has moved Tartford up to 22nd from the previously announced 27th.

(also the final spreadsheet is just missing Dobago's 18 to Abeltesfayeton and has a stray extra 2 points to Taahino in Séyetana's column)

~drama~ aside, Hendinia having another song turning out to be surprisingly close to DNQing despite its strong final position, really just shows that qualification streaks can be very fragile even for the big dogs...!

And seems 'Planet Of The Bass' was fairly lucky to qualify as it got 17 of its points from Mulgracia, New Lexico and Quintessa who then didn't vote in the final (likewise Numayania getting 14 from Mulgracia and New Lexico actually).

Reading the discourse I do feel awful. I was so happy that Ben accepted my prompt to take part, and then even still resubmitted following a veto. It was honestly as huge miscalculation on my part and I felt pretty terrible about it, but went to Bray as soon as I noticed it.

I may not have been the perfect host, but despite the stress I did enjoy it, and I hope this doesn’t leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth.

Again I’m so sorry Ben, and to those where my horrible maths caused false expectations/results.
