+ finally you will get the answers to the questions that kept you awake for so many nights:

1) Is it Aeroche AGAIN??
2) Who's the lucky 20th in Semi 1 who took Scherzland's place (assuming that they would've Qd)?
3) Did Scherzland's vote make a difference in Semi 2? (spoiler: it did, one country qualified because of Scherzland's vote and it's not even the one that won the 3-way tie! But who is that? )
4) Will the awful, AWFUL prophecy of Rich come true this month ("An AQ song will score less than 30 points in the final.") or will it be Aeroche next month ?
5) Who will be the the Queen/King of the prediction thread, who knew EVERYTHING all along?

(I wrote this post before checking any votes tbh.)

As Aeroche wins 2-3 contests a year (and it is only that many because he doesn't want to host more contests) I always assume by default that the winner will be Aeroche.
Sometimes Leww allows us peasants to borrow the crown. We'll see how it goes today.

I don’t think the sub-30 points thing will happen with either of this month’s two AQs.

I can see it maybe happening when a country that usually flops grabs an unlikely/shock win or second place one month and then goes straight back to a ‘niche interest’ entry the following month.

Ojnoj is *this* close to 100 and Jupiterdonia is sitting pretty at number 2. Dobago enters the top 10 which is quite impressive considering that they got votes only from 3 nations out of 10.
Scherzland cracks the top 10 too and now we can confirm that 'BlindLife' will NOT be the AQ that finishes with under 30 points in the final.
Terra Avium receives some well-deserved points from Quintessa, so Séyetana and East Rukahavian are the two left without points.

East Rukahavian gets big points from Tartford, so now Séyetana is the only one waiting for some points - let's see if they got any from Bhangra or St. Burbia.

Thelonia and Jadakissnia didn't touch the top 4, but they managed to push Dobago and Aeroche back to the top 10 giving 'Colourful Kites In The Sky' 15 points, and 'New Reality' 25 points in total. Other countries got more than 20 points too: the winner of this round is Land of DW with 28 points (37-24), but FSR Rontvia's 21 points (23-18) and Summericia's 20 points (28-23) are impressive as well.
Land of DW finally cracks the 30-point milestone, so we can confirm that we will not have an AQ under 30 points this time. "Not today Satan, not today."

No votes for our top 3, with an 18 Danæviia gets really close to the medal. Summericia got 33 out of the possible 36 points which is the second most successful result of the night and moved 12 places up ( 23-11) (only Ojnoj was lucky enough to get 2x18 at the beginning of the contest). Another fantastic result is Suedeonia's 24 points (28-22).
As Séyetana got 10 points from Trifoski, now we officially left single-digit territory. But how will FSR Rontvia and Harmonica affect the current result?

Danæviia's lead is 26 points, quite impressive but not really enough to sit back and relax. Dobago and Danæviia pushes the dance bloc up on the scoreboard, Aeroche gets 25 points and re-enters the top 5 (9-5) while FARC gets 21 points (20-14). Dobago swaps 18s with Land of DW and helps 'Double Dutch' into the top 20 (25-20), Dan's 18 flies 'Wooma' 30-23. Kluminican Republic is out of the bottom 3, hopefully for good.

Getting rid of Ojnoj is quite the issue for Danæviia, there are less than 10 points between the two again.
Chestoria and Bhangra are the clear winners of this round, Weki Meki received 27 points in total and enters the top 20 (29-20) while Robin Packalen is getting closer to the top 10 after getting 25 points.

Uh, it's getting hot at the top, there's only one point between Danæviia and Ojnoj + Jupiterdonia is not that far behind either.
With 19 points D'yermak'er is back in the top 10 (11-8) while Hendinia is back in the top 20 and passed the 100 milestone (again )
Outside the top 15 the only nation that received points from both Oslol and Elëdan is Caerfyrddia (19 in total) who rises from 38 to 31.

Ojnoj just won't let go, only 12 points between our top 2 again. In the top 10 Mosquetania collects an impressive 24 points and flies 9-4 while D'yermak'er gathers 21 points (10-7).
Outside the top 10 Summericia is the winner with 21 points (13-11) Is their future in the top 10 though?
Kathaldazia is the 26th nation to cross 100 but many others are really close. Maybe D'yermak'er or Numayania can push some of them over the line.

Finally our top 2 receives some well-deserved points but Danæviia's lead still doesn't look comfortable enough.
Jadakissnia is back to top 3 and Summericia OUT OF NOWHERE (actually from 10th place) jumps to 4th after getting a double 15. Our whole top 10 reached 200 points and there's only 11 points between 5 and 10.

Wooooo! Well done Dan, I'm so glad that the best entry in the contest did have the crossover appeal required to win (or at least the major support it needed from enough non pop nations to do so). What a stunning entry, and the second month in a row that my 18 pointer has won.

I adore all these instrumentals although I really could have picked a better month to send mine. Over 150 points is wonderful and much love to all the voters but ending down in 27th means it probably got swallowed up a bit by all the other instrumentals.

A wonderful runner up too, I'm glad Rob had faith to send VNV Nation after they didn't do so well last time, as this was a brilliant entry that reminded me of Depeche Mode.

Most of the rest of the top ten was good too - yay at Bøtanikkä just hanging in there in 10th.

Shame to see Séyetana in the bottom five, it was great fun and deserved better. Also Tartford second last Retro 90s dance doesn't always work out then.

thanks for all the love this beautiful piece has been getting, I'm glad so many were able to make a discovery from it and in such an unbelievably strong contest too (from my point of view with all the dance/electronic anyhow!)
didn't expect it'd have enough crossover appeal although Hushkanukian hype was a sign (thanks for +15!), and it now makes two of my winners orchestral dance so perhaps we should be seeking more of those out.

Well I posted that too early but it still applies, wow my top 2 being the top 2 has only happened once before and coincidentally it was Danaeviia's last win Four of my top 5 being in the top 10 as well and almost all of my top 10 doing pretty decently too (guess Cumulonimbia could've been higher but you can't win them all). Many congrats Dan for a third win (all of which being real favourites of mine!) Has to be one of my favourite sets of results ever!

... or would be if we overlooked my flop xx But while I'm a little disappointed for a song I've loved so much for a while now, I did see this coming. In a month so heavy with instrumentals/experimental electronic, it probably did get a bit lost amongst the crowd it would usually appeal to and it took even me a while to fully appreciate it. I'm glad I sent it if just so Varien's last DNQ can be rectified and I really wanted to introduce it to a wider audience, I can see most of those it did appeal to liked it a lot so that's a great thing At least I got over 100 and wasn't last like the most of that vote x

Final scoreboard all matches mine so we're all good!

We have a rare three-way split (in fact a five-way split technically) between the countries with the most points, most votes and most 18s - which means we'll have three different leaders in the new YTD thread which - and please hold me to this - WILL be coming tomorrow, alongside the full EOY summary for 2020!

Danæviia obviously winning the most points, but the most 18s is Jadakissnia, while the most votes is a three way tie between Summericia... and Aeroche (9th) and Lookylion (14th), bizarrely enough...! I will need to do a bit of digging to see if there has ever been a song that got the (joint) most votes while finishing as low as 14th before

So yay, this very good contest has finished up with very good results *.* I was totally expecting that having so many songs that cater to my taste would mean it all cancelled out to some extent leaving a very pop heavy top 10 but interesting that that didn't really happen at all in the end, instead we have probably the least poppy top 10 for quite some time! I voted for 7 of the top 10, and all of those were at least 5 points I had a good feeling that Worakls/VNV Nation/Namasenda/Trudge would all at least have a good shot at the top 10 so thrilled to see them ending up making up 4 of the top 5 <3 Perry Farrell and John 00 Fleming coming top 10 is a little more unexpected but excellent nonetheless (lmao at me predicting that Terra Avium would have a higher ceiling than Rolloland, my psychic skills are very rusty this month), and yay for Patrick Topping getting in there as well. GusGus was also a commiseration for me, the other 2 in the top 10 were ranked pretty low for me but I guess the pop bloc needs to have some representation

Also happy to see Suedeonia in the top 15, Chestoria having a strong top 20 showing (not a fave song of mine but I'm glad their first time in the final wasn't a damp squib x) and Kathaldazia at least doing a lot better than their last few entries (though still deserved better x). And wow Iz was right about Skall, that's really blown past any expectations I could have ever had for it. Disappointing showings for FARC (they normally go top 10 with no effort, why have we ranked their best entry for years as low as 16th :'(), TARO Bellamia and especially Terra Avium which I guess turned out to be way more niche than I thought it'd be, ah well, at least it did get to have its day in the final so some justice was served for 'Lilith' :')

I'm mind blown at coming 2nd to think they didn't even qualify first time round and then do THIS well. It's crazy and I had no expectations for this despite loving it when it first came out in 2018. Wow. It's a bittersweet result actually.

Looked this up now - this is indeed a new record, congratulations Lookylion continuing to rewrite record books The previous lowest placed song that had the most votes in its contest was Paradis' 'Instantané' (12th place for Flynnonda in BJSC 117, also being a case of joint most votes). That was the only previous song to do this while finishing lower than 7th (which means Patrick Topping also takes 3rd place in this particular stat).

This is also only the third contest ever that has at least a three-way tie for the song with the most votes (following BJSC 30 which had a four-way tie, and BJSC 54 which was also a three-way tie). #funstats

Congrats Dan! It really was a great month for instrumentals so it's only fitting that one of them wins. Top 10 for Dobago's instrumental is very welcome too! Only 4 songs I voted for in the top 20, at least my points went to songs that needed them I guess

Despite the points drought at the end, 32nd is still higher than I expected to finish when I first picked an entry. It was wonderful to spend the majority of the night in the top 20! Hopefully a taste of finally ending our non-top-20 streak this year. Thanks to New Lexico and Lotunia and anyone else I hadn't thanked yet.

Really pleased with these results overall! Voted for 8 of the top 10 entries, great winner and Jadakissnia pulling off an unexpected top 5 finish as she should *.*

'Wooma' having some outside the niche appeal and ending our botttom 10 diva streak
I wonder if Pagasa had voted, would it have sneaked top 20 and pushed Samantha ha radio 2 entry out?

- Harmonica, Suededonia, Summercia, Niceland, Aelandor, Lotunia and Santa Haus giving us the much needed outside niche points - I feel BLESSED & couldn't be more grateful!
- POPhun points as well OMG! Could this be a sign that the silent pop voters and Skype clique will start giving Kathaldazia the time of day in contests to come?

Was following along last night and despairing when we were down in joint last but 24th is decent in the end! Managed to sneak up right at the end! Thank you to all those who voted for it and in particular Lewis for the 18! Also very happy that Bhangra finished 23rd which is only one place off where I predicted them to finish (22nd)

Quite a surprising top 10 but I'm glad to see some more out there and unusual entries getting some success. Even Jadakissnia and Rolloland which I didn't vote for in the top 10 I can appreciate their appeal!

Also fantastic job on hosting Frank, you were such a pro-active host and did really well to keep the contest to it's original schedule which is an achievement in itself! Looking forward to the next time we touch down in the Land of DW!

Another fun stat from this month: Tartford have the biggest regression from the semi-final (30 places lower than projected), in stark contrast to the last contest where they actually had the biggest improvement from the semi-final (Air going 22 places higher than projected).

The 30 place regression for 'Wrap Me Up' is the joint 2nd biggest ever (behind Isaac Dunbar's 'makeup drawer' which went -31). The return of poor brave Tartford!

The biggest improvement from the semi this month (+26 for Just Kiddin) is also in the top 10 biggest of all time so we had some pretty polarised semis this time ~

What was the regression for my entry Salsa Me by Spacetrain, which somehow won the semi before finishing 36th in the final? Are points totals or placings in the semis taken into account to work out the projected final position?

'Salsa Me' was -29 which is the joint 4th biggest regression.

I get these figures by just comparing the points totals from the semis (and using a single tiebreak across both semis, so a song with 80 points and 1 12 in semi 1 would be above a song with 80 points and no 12s in semi 2 etc.) - it's an inherently slightly flawed metric due to it being imbalanced when one semi has more voters than the other (and when there is a deduction involved on either end) but haven't cared to try and come up with any minor adjustments to that to make it fairer, it'd always be a slightly janky measure no matter what you do with it really, but it's still interesting to observe the extremes.

Interesting, thanks. Yes, doing it your way makes sense.

I guess doing it by positions only would ultimately mean nothing if the top five in one semi all scored higher than the winner of the other.

The 'wrong semi effect' is always talked about but it stands to reason that many other songs are saved by being in exactly the right semi, sailing through with a fantastic finish only to find that nobody from the other semi cared for it at all and it would have been a DNQ in there. I guess that's the main catalyst for these major regressions, although no doubt some of the other entries simply find themselves unlucky enough to be marked down by most or all of their semi voters in the final. Some songs certainly sound amazing on first listen and then age quickly, while others go the opposite way.

When is the Future? was literally the next song on my rank and only just missed out on votes too It's taken me a few days to even read this thread but wow how exciting/unexciting for Holland-Oats, striving to be as unpredictable as possible

Instrumentals generally aren't my thing either but Storm is just so emotional and even as I was listening through for the first time, half-doing other jobs with BJSC in the background, I had to stop and listen to the whole song uninterrupted
