Hi.
I did do a quick search but there doesn't really seem to be a place dedicated to just discussing past entries, artists that have been sent, rediscovering forgotten gems (unless i'm being completely blind and silly). Hope this thread is ok with the mods but basically post away anything you're rediscovering or randomly stumbling across in your travels! Be it a single song, EP or whole contest...
Try and include contest number, country behind the song etc if possible too
I lost ALL bjsc songs from my laptop a few months ago and have just started the task of getting them all back. So i'll be using this thread a lot for updates while i go through the whole year
Have managed to get back the essentials from LI and it's really the best contest i've been involved in. We could bottle the highlights into a compilation album, sell it and make a tonne of money off it, right?
My playlist from it~
Kate Boy - Northern Lights
Autre Ne Veut - Counting
The Irrepressibles - Two Men In Love
The Other Tribe - Skirts
Chloe Howl - Rumour
The Good Natured - 5-HT
Elliphant - Down On Life
Samantha Jade - What You've Done To Me
Miriam Bryant - Push Play
San Cisco - Beach
Roses Gabor - Stars
Goldroom - Sweetness Alive
Woman E - You Stole That Summer
Betty Who - Somebody Loves You
Rachel Zeffira - The Deserters
Willam/Detox/Vicki Vox - Boy Is A Bottom
ALL essential and loads more from it too that i haven't included <3
Before my time in this competition, but Paul Kalkbrenner 'Sky & Sand' has to be one of the most inspired entries I've come across.
I've recently rediscovered Katie Tiz' Red Cup
Utter tune and I do not regret giving my 12 to that
Gonna be the only one talking about one of their own songs here but I've been getting back into the pop noir of Mel Jade - Not That Serious these past few days.
still prefer it to most of my own entries
I gave this zero in the semi final yet I now think it's one of the best pop songs never to appear on a Marina & The Diamonds album.
god this contest didn't begin in 2012 guys
There are various, but I have found these, after over a year, haven't got old yet:
Dead Can Dance - Opium (didn't even give points to this oop )
Alina Devecerski - Flytta Pa Dej
Wild At Heart - Darling
Chad Valley - Fall 4 U
(and 2012 was the year I joined so I can't really go back much farther )
i feel like the only person who thought this was actually rly good :'(
I absolutely loved that entry, I voted for FSR Rontvia quite a lot back then as far as I know.
I'd love to go back to those times
I will never stop bemoaning the lack of market for this sort of thing. Launiça were so good (hi Charlie if you're reading).
Never fails to make me feel a little bit more epic when I hear it.
I frequently revisit early gems such as 'Untouched - Smack Me' and anything involving Mira Craig.
i've been getting into this Batidas gem from April 2013. gives off a really nostalgic feel for me, wish i'd properly loved this earlier!
and also this, from not quite as long ago:
pretty sure it made my points in its contest, but would likely be a lil higher in them now. dance-pop with a good dose of elegance & euphoria
rly i'm sure at least a couple of 2014 entries will grow on me a bit more once i listen back on them fairly soon ~~
A bit more recent from D'yermak'er, Baby Doll
Talking of D'yermak'er, their entering of Verité reminded me how good Strange Enough was from a few contests back, can't believe I only gave it something like 1-3 points in the final, it's really quite wonderful.
Strange Enough is amazing and really should have won.
'Strange Enough' was a very good song but it never fully clicked with me in the way 'Weekend' now has.
*cheeky bump*
Because this song has randomly come on shuffle for me a few times in the past few days and it's properly connected with me. Gorgeous entry by Klum Rep in LV ~
Phoebe Ryan's 'Mine' has really clicked with me as of late.
^ Yay for someone other than me appreciating 'Glass Heart'!! I knew it wouldn't do brilliantly - hence why I only sent it when I had an AQ - but I still don't think it quite deserved to be last by a mile :')
Why didn't this smash? (I 'rediscover' this like every couple of months, one of my go to songs when I feel like listening to old BJSC tracks)
ÄLSKLING VI ÄR BÄST DU KAN FRÅGA VEM SOM HELST. Good choice, Bra! xo
If it makes you feel any better, I still hate that Tritonal song.
No, not better Brayden.
From plug.dj tonight:
These are both INCRED (as well as 'Pacifica' which I sent, the only K&RL song to get through the semis), do not understand the snubbage of both of them.
H Kamhla.
It shoulda won!!!
I feel bad not pointing these songs now:
1.) "Running With The Wolves" - I remember pointing it in the semi-final and I think that's the only song with the word "Wolf" that I didn't point in the final (given the other song was Sumera but whatevs). THEN IT APPEARS ON TEEN WOLF. I just can't win.
2.) "Riyzamin" - another song I wasn't feeling at the time of the contest, but then I listened to it and it sounds straight out of a Cirque Du Soleil show.
Also I think I like "Egeya" more than "(Don't Go) Running" eep.
Not sure why I didn't like this more at the time, but it's sounding really good now!
THIS from Kopečka in LIV
<3
WOW that sounds so good now. i liked it at the time but i can't remember it sounding that good!
Aquafina's beauty in the form of Ask Yourself <3
Not so much rediscovering as I gave it 15 points as it was, but Lushington's You Got Me Baby has been sounding better than ever to me in the sun recently <3
For a while now this one's been getting to me
pure bliss <3
Blush by TP4Y is the 18 that never was for me - such a brilliant summery track
Liam can I just APOLOGISE for not giving this absolute stunner more than 2 points in the contest not sure what went on as I am ALL OVER IT right now, such a fantastic track, can't turn it off
How did I only give this 3 points?! I have rediscovered it today and it's sounding sooooo good.
Turns out this actually DID grow on me loads, just not until after the contest. Absolutely adoreee it now though and not sure why I was so slow with it (sorry Randy).
My god, "Never Let You Go" is still spectacular now like it was back then.
my very own ilia darlin - we do what we like
SO GOOD
and my other very one frxxmasons which fell A over T and FLOPPED. still not over it
ilia darlin is so good!! me and liam were stanning on plug #postcontestexposure
this beauty from séyetana
yes! It's rare I find a song like that I like enough to send but when I do it's so satisfying to have it diversifying up my repetoire <3
This underrated gem
Lost On You by LP, I can't remember if I pointed this or it just missed out but I enjoyed it a bit at the time but love it now.
I am slightly preferring the dance mixes though, which in turn have got me more into the original.
I'm really into Møme 'Aloha' right now, why did we let it finish so low in the final???
Didn't point it, barely remember it (and it finished Top 3!), but absolutely loving it right now!
you got me baby is one of the few bjsc songs i've gone out of my way to buy to have on my phone. still amazing. same with do it well 🙌🏼
4Minute - Crazy
Listened to the acoustic version of both Jones entries last night and WOW
I've become addicted to T S I E R over the past couple of weeks... and when I checked back, I shamefully didn't point it at all in the contest where Rich entered it. :/
Found myself listening to PinkiePieSwear - Flutterwonder a lot recently.
night drive - drones <3
i wonder if vulker had voted if this wouldve been a token synthpop top 5/10
Atella x Frøder 'Closer To Life' has really grown on me post-contest recently!
yasss Dan <3 That's a beauty.
The ongoing pop forum contest with a foreign language theme has inspired me to dig out this song from Séyetana in Worldvision II. I never pointed it at the time but I always found there to be something about it despite not really being my "usual thing" or whatever, so I probably should've at least put it in my commiserations soz iz~
I appreciate this reevaluation (that sort of song is not my usual thing these days too but I also found something about it that led me coming back to it more than I would most) And Flutterwonder appearing for Oliver again is excellent also.
Rediscovering "Lovesick F*ck" from BJSC 75 and it sounds better with A$AP's vocals
Øfdream - Thelema is clicking with me right now <3 I found it sort of "flat" in the contest it was in, think it just needed more individual listens.
some countries are going out of their comfort zone this month and doing such a good job with it
Still listen to this semi-regularly.
THANKS PAV
i wish I was a part of this contest
Not even a main contest entry.
Why do I still listen to this tho.
i ALWAYS go back to that!!!!
seyetana will never do better
Moral winner of that contest against... whatever beat it.
Out of all my spinoff entries that's easily the one I wished most was a canon main one of mine - and Leww's right at least in that subgenre for all my searching of trashy club-rap-dance I've never found anything that's quite so well put together as that.
Heard Pavel's DNQ 'I Want You To Shake' by Francis And The Lights live tonight as Francis was the support act for The xx
been reminding myself of that Greenfroze (?) gem Now Is The Start from A Fine Frenzy - aka Alison Sudol of acting fame, her of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them fabness....
Not necessarily a re-discovery, but I've listened to 'Travva' by Jutro quite a bit since the last contest. Always makes me feel as though I'm about to be offered poppers in some dodgy bar down Canal Street.
EXCUSE ME, why did I not vote for this? Must've been a really strong contest! I think it was, if I remember correctly. Not always my usual thing but there's a subtle difference between this and other such songs that aren't usually "my thing", that distinguishes it for me. ('PreGomesh' was like that too)
I remember the first time I found out that it was a Pantenne advert and realised that's why there were so many slo-mo hair shots in the video.
Oh my gosh how did I not point this Cadelicia gem?! I blame it on being in Portugal during this contest so I only had one listen through. Absolutely love it now, should've done waaaay better in the final.
Drake's collab with Black Coffee (different artist I know but similar name) reminded me of this. Can we crown it winner of Rejects already tbh?
Yassss Dan. Same here, first thing I thought of when I heard Get It Together <3
Yeah I definitely did a double take when I first saw Drake's tracklist thinking it was Black Motion featured on 'Get It Together'!
(I'd support that being a Rejects smash. There have already been far too many songs I'd have given very high points to in the final that have DNQed this year though, feeling like a rougher year for some of my faves than 2016 was!)
Apparently actual Julia Michaels was the vocalist on this classic Ramrynia BJSC entry (And several other Borgeous singles too)
invincible is definitely one of my fave rammallamarynias x
I remember Julia was a go to vocalist for many of Spinnin' Records' artists, and I found her through her next Borgeous collaboration "Wildfire"
She sang on a couple of Zedd songs as well!
Not necessarily a rediscovery as it was entered a couple of years before I signed up but this is beautiful <3
Barely clinging to the top 30 back in LXXX. Wtf is up with you buzzjack?!?!
If only 'Arigato' finished that low as well. (still too high for both of them x)
Maria Haukaas Storeng & Mira Craig - Mine All Mine
No idea but it's been in my head for weeks so I've had to take the plunge and start listening to it for the first time since 2008.
Just realized this beaut sampled Alicia Keys!
one of the best things submitted to BJSC EVER ticks all the boxes - alternative dance, a great use of sample and completely ethereal
I'll Be Gone is great *.* (as is "The Hunter" mentioned earlier on)
Really got into this crazy + catchy Espen hit from 2012 recently -
Omg Nordpolen *.* When I peaked tbh.
This Land of DW jam from BJSC 89 sounded incredible by the pool in Spain. Can't believe I didn't point it at the time! Big post-contest grower.
Nordpolen is Espen at their cray cray best
I liked this in the contest but hadn't heard it since until Thursday night when I saw Bebe live, totally forgot how great it was
woop woop for the I'll Be Gone love Still one of my favourite entries I've sent! Nordpolen was an absolute beast of an entry also
these dance covers of BJSC entries are f*cking me up
I just found out that Paul from Big Brother is in this band?!?!
I'm sorting through my mess of last.fm scrobbles and came across this beast of a tune from 3 years ago.
Loved it and pointed it at the time but somehow sounds better today? Criminally underrated entry!
I think Girls Like Girls was a BJSC entry on here a year or two ago. It came on shuffle a couple of times recently
Currently enjoying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FW4H_1d-ts
As a newer person to this there's a lot of back catalogue to stumble across :3
A few much underrated DNQs that I've recently had stuck in my head a bit after hearing them on me and Jade's Spotify playlists:
And a few artist recycles in the current contest have had me looking back up their older (and better ) entries - Autoheart's 'Agoraphobia', Moxie Raia's 'Dirty Lights', Smallpools' 'Dreaming'
Teen Wolf seems to be really good at poaching BJSC entries, I mean I've managed to rediscover this from last Sunday's episode:
Why didn't I give any points to "Acid Rain" by Lorn in BJSC 89? Absolutely STUNNING song, can't believe just how amazing that contest was - Catey Shaw, Crystal Waters, Cobi, Nadia Tehran, Burak Yeter, Steve James, Jane XO, BLKMGK, Sir The Baptist, and of course Lorn
FM-84s “Arcade Summer” - came on shuffle and just realised it would work really well either soundtracking Final Score (BBC) or the heartwarming Black Mirror episode, San Junipero.
Yessss Doctor Blind! one of the best things I sent last year for sure.
Not really rediscovering but I'm stanning so hard for Flj's Dagny entry "Backbeat" right now.
Honestly how 5 Fine Frøkner and Backbeat weren't that months top 2 I'll never know
easyFun's Monopoly is one of the best winners ever
I've just re-discovered https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWQbNb39lgc and don't quite see how I didn't vote for it!
Hello - Stwfford Brothers
Idek who sent it anymore but thank you to whoever it was, issa bopT
Loving this now, definitely a case of not letting it play all the way through when I heard it during the contest.
THIS!
Massively underappreciated this one at the time, I return to it a lot these days.
Wondering if by this stage Phil has gone on about '5 Fine Frøkner' more than Rich did about 'Spin My World' (at least this is actually a good somg though tbf )
Stupeflip *.*
I think everyone just associates it with Skam these days
how the hell did this not even come top 20.
I'm like re-discovering my own entries lol. I pretty much haven't listened to 'Pustinja' after the contest it was in, but I had a ~craving~ for it this morning and am now repeat listening to it. Still obsessed lmao. There's something about the intense and lush atmosphere created by the instrumentation in that song that just GETS me. And don't get me started on his voice. And the video is fabulous.
relistening to this bop after finding out about their disbandment this is still among my fave daehun entries EVER and one of the best BJSC entries of 2016, really sucks how much their label gave them the shaft
This recently came up on Shuffle and I'd forgotten this one. Like it more now than back in its contest:
I gave it 12 at the time, but right now KlumRep‘s CL entry Inji - Madeline has just re-entered my consciousness today and I’ve been raving away all day
lately I've pushing some tracks to friends and family - Greta Van Fleet (Heat Above), Lucia & The Big Boys (Perfectly Untrue), Kishi Bashi (Antichrist), Javiera Mena (Otra Era), Woodkid (Run Boy Run) and my current rave Jungle cos I regard them all as nothing less than brilliant and they need to be heard as often as possible by everyone....
Granted, not everyone is as convinced as I am of their merit, but they need to be persuaded...
now why does this remix slap
this entry from 2020
thanks to this new version which got released on Anjunabeats this week
I find myself coming back to this track a LOT. I know she's had a fair few entries but this is easily the best one:
I had been trying to think of what song it reminded me of (in particular the start of the chorus) and settled on this one, albeit more like a Zedd remix of it:
Who remembers/still loves this Tinnmark banger?
happy may the 4th
I just revisited that one too about a week ago!
I'm revisiting a bunch of faves while I'm posting anniversary stuff in my national thread. This is just a short list of them:
