Welcome!
Welcome! Great first entry, hope to see you do well in your first BJSC!
I FOUND YOU.
Please bring more pop bops to BJSC, I need more pop bops.
So after two fabulous females, I decided to send male vocals this round!
I absolutely love this song by Gregory Dillon, one of the favourite songs of the year here in Lookylion - hopefully some of you will appreciate it, too!
3 for 3 now! Always hyped to see what you're bringing to BJSC and you delivered yet again!
Ohh and I just see you had "Apart" by Camden Cox vetoed last contest so you for sure would have gotten pts from me then too! Such an amazing song!
So, a merry Christmas to all the other countries on BuzzJack, from Lookylion!
For the next round, I'm considering:
- a pop banger
- a remixed bop
- a remixed foreign language banger
- something a little more leftfield...
What to do, what to do??
always remix
i do love a remix!
Thanks for your thoughts!
SO, my entry for round 131 turned out to be the banger!
was so close to sending this myself, i never thought we'd have that kind of crossover! SO impressed with how quickly you're establishing your sound and bringing good entry after good entry!
So, Anabel came 14th in round 131 - I had of course hoped for another top ten, but I am still pleased with these results. Seeing which type of songs did well this round, I might have to reconsider my entry for next round...?
Another round, another entry!
I heard this on some Spotify playlist last year, and was immediately hooked! Hope you will enjoy it, too!
After my first DNQ last round, I'm back with a more commercial bop.... hopefully people will enjoy it, and party like it's... 2019!
Greetings Lookylion!
I have heard your entry the week of its release, and it certainly stood out for me. I hope it can restore your qualification status again!
Unfortunately, two DNQ's in a row.... Back to the drawing board for next round....
a bop
I almost entered something from the 80's, but eventually choose a recent track. I hope you all will like it, esp. the countries voting in semi 1!
It's Eurovision month - my entry for round 135 sees two recent Norwegian Eurovision acts join forces. Enjoy!!
Another round, another entry... here is the Lookylion entry for round 136, and it's a familiar face!
For round 137, one of my favourite voices ever came to play: Helene Fischer!
I've considered this entry for a couple of rounds, but here it is, for round 138: and 80's classic, by Deodato feat. Camille:
For round 139, a song that puts me in a Halloween mood!
Hey there Lookylion!
Always liked your nation since discovering you this year and your regular participation is great to see! Just wanted to make a comment about your entry this month! I only discovered this on the final day of confirmations and once I heard it I thought I had discovered something that sounded unique and uplifting, then I watched the music video and I was sold! I imagine how amazing it would be to see this enter BJSC, so I put it forward only for Captain Addy to inform me that there was already a seat reservation for this song! It turned out to be yourself! But of course I am still happy, and if I were in your Semi I would be awarding points but unfortunately I can’t, so I am hoping to see you in the final! Great choice this month indeed!
So, Confidence Man won round 140 for me!! I am so very pleased!!
Are you all ready to go on a Holiday to a sunny island somewhere off the coast of Lookylion for round 141?
For round 141 - I've chosen to enter the most popular and successful Dutch girl group, the Dolly Dots!
The Dolly Dots formed in 1979, and released 26 singles from 1979-1987, 25 of which entered the Dutch Top 40. They hit the top of the Dutch chart once, in 1983.
They released 8 studio albums, 2 live albums and 5 official compilation albums
The group was formed by a production team, who looked for a 5piece band. First Anita, Sjeel, Patty and Esther were recruited, who knew each other from being back up dancers on the Dutch TV show. Angela, an experienced rock singer, was then contacted, but wasn't interested, and she suggested Ria to join the group. In the end, both Angela and Ria joined as all of them got along very well, and the 5piece became a 6piece. They were apparently named after an old comic character, Miss Dolly Dot
In 1983, the girls not only released a poptastic album, Display, but they also starred in the own TV comedy show!
Looking back, it is extremely dated and cheesy, but gave them their first taste of acting, and showcased some old song but also a brand new song in the leader.
In 1984, the band left their record label, WEA, and signed with Ariola. They released a new single and album in the 2nd half of the year; Anita was pregnant of her daughter by then. The other girls flew to Barbados without her to film a TV special showcasing some of the songs on the album - my entry was taken from that album, and was released as a single in Japan only, in 1985.
Around this time, a toy company produced Dolly Dots dolls - which were quite popular, but ugly as hell. (I of course have all six!)
In 1985, Anita left the group to focus on motherhood.
After Anita left, the and went back into the studio; however, with new producers. The new album called "Attention" had a fresh, international sound.
So, in 1986 it was finally here, after years of speculation: a Hollywood movie featuring the Dolly Dots. Man, it was BAD! But the music fabulous of course!
The final single from the girls was probably their best known on this forum, as it was written and produced by SAW. It however didn't give them the chart success they had hoped for, both in and outside Holland, and not long after it was released, the band announced they would split up in 1988.
They reunited briefly in 1998 for the release of a Best Of 2CD, with all sux members, and for a very successful tour in 2007/2008. Sadly, in 2009, Ria died of lung cancer.
Early 2020, they announced a reunion tour - which was postponed of course due to the pandemic. It finally premiered in October 2021, but late November, the current lockdown caused trouble again. The women WILL finish the tour, in the Summer. I've seen them twice already, and loved every minute of it. They even recorded a new single for this tour:
For round 142, I went for Norwegian synthpop bliss by Sordal - the album version of Transarctic Lover (no not the Keiino mix). I mean, who doesn't want to move slow like they are Kylie?
For round 143, my choice is.. Hatchie!
Another round, another entry!
Uberbop Extra Agenda by Claudia Valentina
For round 145, I went for a completely different sound by a Dutch female singer, but this song by Lights is fast becoming my song for the Summer, so I decided to let you all enjoy it, too!
Round 146: A grand return to the music scene for Claudia Brücken & Susanne Freytag - together with Michael Mertens and Ralf Dörper, they enjoyed huge succes in 1984 and 1985 as Propaganda, with their album A Scret Wish, and singles Dr. Mabuse, Duel and p:Machinery. In 2022, Susanne and Claudia are back as xPropaganda, with an amazing album, The Heart Is Strange, produced by Stephen Lipson. Check it out!!
I entered the 12 inch version of Dr Mabuse in 2018 and it finished 5th in the final which was much better than I was expecting. It's still my second best final placing.
I think 'Beauty Is Truth' is my favourite track from the new album but 'The Night' is a good one as well.
For round 147, one of my favourite Dutch acts of the moment - a great live band, with catchy indie pop songs, RONDÉ
A new round, a new act - I had never heard of Honey. until I heard this recent release a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it, it is a contender for my song of the year!
What Now is incredible, it’s got a lovely big dollop of ABBA in the mix, which can only ever be a good thing.
So, for my AQ I picked the new moniker for Caroline van der Leeuw, previously known as Caro Emerald. A gorgeous song from her upcoming album released early 2023:
I guess it was not for everybody...
Happy that Nonô qualified and did well in round 150!
maybe you can choose my next entry bc this is the second time you've sent something in my potentials list that you've completely eclipsed me on 😅
Well... we can can work something out!
For round 151: One of the biggest current hits in The Netherlands - Maan with MTV Europe Award winners Goldband with their track Stiekem, with an iconic video. Hope you all like it!
For BJSC 152, I was vetoed quite a few times, so in the end, I chose a track that was on my potentials list for the non-English contest at the PopJustice forum. Maybe I should've saved it for that one...
An Australian girlband for round 153 - the amazing Dead End by Blusher, which gives me MUNA-vibes:
That was my second choice this month, fab song!
wow the triple j playlist putting out some bangers
Triple J is an Australian radio station. I think they're typically quite alternative leaning?
Yeah, another win! Thanks to all voters for Blusher!
Next round will be... Retro!
For my next AQ, I'm going for a Retro song, that I've loved for many years now. Dusty... For me, the greatest voice in popular music - of all time. Dusty had a voice I could listen too all day. I first heard Dusty Springfield's voice on the 1987 duet with the Pet Shop Boys, a single I loved and bought as a teenager. I also loved the singles she released from her Reputation album, but it was not until 2011 when I started collecting Dusty's back catalogue, discovering gem after gem after gem. Including my entry for this round. Back in October 2022, I was on another Dusty Springfield binge, and discovered through liner notes in a Dusty collection that this song was actually a cover of a song originally recorded by Rita Jean Bodine. An amazing voice and artist, who only released two albums in 1974, and a stand alone single in 1976. Unfortunately, I discovered Rita's music has never been remastered or released on CD or streaming. Rita's energy on her recordings is immense, and on her more quiet moments, I am for some reason reminded of Tori Amos.
As for That's The Kind Of Love I've Got For You, I cannot choose between Dusty's and Rita's version - I love both so much.
Well done for the AQ in the Yobnedorica contest! We love to see it!
As some of the participants of BJSC know, the Prime Minister of LookyLion also participates in the PopJustice Song Contest. As it is against the LookyLion law to use a song in a contest more than once, here are some previous PJSC LookyLion (aka WoW73) entries, for inspiration!
A little update...
For round 155, a Eurovision alumnus, with a great cover:
For round 156, there was a Scandi-banger:
And for round 157, a DNQ...
For round 158, I selected a wonderful funk song from the 80's, by the legendary Teena Marie.
Teena Marie's career began in the late 70's, as a protege of Rick James, who also produced her debut album. Her second album was called Lady T, a nickname that has always stuck. That album includes her biggest UK hit, Behind The Groove. Her biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 was indeed lovergirl, taken from her 6th album Starchild, reaching no. 4. In the second half of the 90's, Teena dedicated her time to raising her daughter, though several of her songs were sampled during that time, most notably her song Ooo La La La in Fu-Gee-La by The Fugees.
Teena re-emerged on the music scene in 2004 with a new album, and two more were released before her death in 2010. In 2004, while sleeping in a hotel room, a large picture frame fell and struck her on the head. The blow caused a serious concussion that resulted in momentary seizures for the rest of her life; she had major seizure a few weeks before her death, which may have caused it, it seems. Such a sad story.
Teena was such a talented songwriter, musician, singer and performer. I hope this round will expose more listeners to her back catalogue.
I only know this because of Drag Race but I really like it <3 Back on form!
For round 159, another Dutch artist. Stefanie Joosten is originally from the south of the country, Limburg. Currently living in Japan, Stefanie is a model, actress and singer - and one of the characters in a Metal Gear game was based on her looks and she also provides the voice of that character. In 2022 she released her debut single and album, and a new single was just released, which features THE Giorgio Moroder.
2023 was a year with mixed results for me, with only one Top 10 (but with a win) and two entries not qualifying. Also - my Retro entries usually do not do well, but that will not stop me from sending a Retro song in 2024 every now and then.
My last entry of 2023 for round 160 luckily qualified, and though I had hoped it would do better, I am glad some of the voters enjoyed it!
For round 161, LookyLion is going a bit more dancey/clubby with My Friend feat. Darla Jade. My Friend is a dance/house/techno production duo from London, who have been releasing tracks since 2018. On this recent release, the duo joined forces with Darla Jade - an electro-pop artist, who also has released several tracks over the past few years, both solo and in collaboration with others acts.
I am still shocked that Alaska y Dinarama did not qualify in round 162....
I feel like you always get horribly robbed every time you send dance/EDM
rly liked that one too 😔
Unfortunately, Candian singer Betta Lemme's latest banger did not manage to imptress a lot of you, so it did not qualify. Robbed!
So here's to round 164!
Hopefully girli's latest banger Crush Me Up will have more appeal. girli is from London, and has released quite a lot of singles since her debut in 2015. Crush Me up is the latest single from her new album Matriarchy, which is released on May 17th.
