Kat Dahlia “Crazy”
LXIV Final: 35th - 80 points
Tell me 'cause it's blowing my mind / Tell me 'cause I don't understand
Hugs and many thanks to these countries for giving Harmonica a respectable BJSC debut:
13 points: Federal Republic of Ashton
11 points: Bellamia
11 points: Bignia-Zaragovina
10 points: Unovia
7 points: Oslol
7 points: Palmyra
6 points: Singerpurear
5 points: Ramrynia
4 points: Elëdan
3 points: Daehun
2 points: Yehesi
1 point: Jukianië
That flag tho.
Sry I couldn't throw a point or two in your direction, you ended up something like 18th if I bothered to rank all the songs this month which I didn't. Very much like anyway, I'm sure it would have been a big hit here if it was entered a few years ago and thought it might still have got that appeal now but apparently not so much - 35th isn't TOO bad though?
u just jealous
I am jealous as well!
oh and what a wonderful thing being sandwiched in this popslutfest <3

So you both must like the flag
Sizzy Rocket "Girls"
LXV: did not qualify
Only one country had anything nice to say about '‘Girls'’, but who better to praise it than the contest host himself, Ricardo Delta! He called it ‘'a great early Saturdays-esque song’…' which is terrific, but probably for the best that it wasn’t said before everyone voted! New-country prejudice has been ruled out as a possibility, as fellow newbie the Republic of Adonia earned a top-ten finish (rightfully!) in their first contest. The real reason for Sizzy'’s underperformance is, of course, a lack of promo due to the cancellation of Keisha Buchanan'’s talk show, on which she was scheduled to appear.
Anoop Desai feat. ADHD "Love War"
LXVI: did not qualify
The Riser hype for this began http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=158052&view=findpost&p=4484577, before Harmonica was even a figment of his imagination. The song was resurrected to make sure we weren't missing out on something with this so-called "dance trend" in BJSC. Harmonica never seemed like a dance country, and now we know it's true. We now return to our regularly scheduled guitar pop.
Dominique Pruitt "To Win Your Love"
LXVII: did not qualify
Rachel Reilly lookalike Dominique Pruitt failed "to win your love" as Harmonica misses the final yet again. 26th in the semi is our worst ever finish. We were 23rd last month and 25th the month before. It's anyone's guess how I managed to win Nuggets on my first try!
The Rocket Summer "So Much Love"
LXVIII: did not qualify
26th in the semi for a second month straight. However, our nation feels like we did manage to successfully create the illusion that we'd get our first hit with this. Thanks to Bellamia, Seyetana, Desbuanda, and Persephonia for giving our poor country more hype than it's ever had! Also thanks to Persephonia for our flagball:
This reminds me of a Bellamia entry except better. Hope it qualifies for choo.
All Thieves "Turn And Turn Again"
LXIX: did not qualifyFor this contest Harmonica has turned to an all-time fave, a subtle but beautifully soothing track that will hopefully find a way to stand out in its semi. Anything short of qualification for this would be incredibly disappointing, so please let's make an effort to avoid that.
Love this. My favourite of your entries
This is lovely.
Song's stunning
P-Money feat. Vince Harder "Everything"
LXX: did not qualify
Having been forced to change our entry at the last minute, we put our hopes on this New Zealand #1 smash to finally capture the elusive first hit for Harmonica. Oh well, better luck next year!
Anoop Desai's "Love War (feat. ADHD)" reached the semifinal in BJSC TBO VII: The Rejects, where it finished 23rd (I think) and top 6 in nominations from its contest! Note to self: make a fancy, formatted post for this recognition.
Harmonica has compiled a rough list of its top 50 entries of 2014! It's vaguely in order but even the #1 is interchangeable. And keep in mind it's only for 7 contests (64 to 70). Enjoy!

The Coasts' track is lovely, hope this is your first qualifier in a while
Coasts "A Rush Of Blood"
LXXI
Our most Buzzjack-friendly entry in some time, so fingers crossed as we try to leave behind the failures of 2014 and start on the right foot for 2015
this WILL qualify surely? unless Harmonica racism is high I could see this doing well, quite like it myself
I really hope this does qualify, my second favourite of your entries so far (after P-Money obviously, still reeling over his DNQ).
Coasts "A Rush Of Blood"
LXXI: 11th - 116 points
What an unbelievable success! Many thanks to the 20 countries that supported Harmonica and Coasts in the final, obviously a best-ever finish for our nation.
12 points: Ajanaeda, Kylienips, Ramrynia, Sãó Ricó
10 points: Llewandia
8 points: Zechonia
7 points: Varakë

Ramrynia takes the lead in our points received list:
Ramrynia (17), Bignia-Zaragovina (15), Federal Republic of Ashton (13), Ajanaeda/Kylienips/Sãó Ricó/Unovia (12)
The Flavr Blue "We Can Go Blind"
LXXII: did not qualify
As some of you know I LOVE "White Walls" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and have really really wanted to enter Hollis into BJSC. This is her! Listen to how good it is!
She's amazing.
Holychild "Running Behind"
LXXIII
We love ourselves a pop duo! This song was discovered on a radio station that plays a heck of a lot of BJSC songs, including three in a row earlier today! (Didn't get a chance to screenshot but it was Walk The Moon 'Shut Up And Dance', Cold War Kids 'First', and Galantis 'Runaway'.) Not gonna reveal the station name though 'cause we want this source all to ourselves.
Oooooo, I was going to send this next month. Very refreshing track, best of luck!
Holychild "Running Behind"
LXXIII: 17th - 105 points
I'll say it again: this sounded like a 17th-place song the very day I found it, and now here we are in 17th place! Thanks to:
10 points: Ajanaeda, Federal Republic of Ashton, Florina
8 points: FARC
7 points: Trifoski
6 points: Daehun, Desbuanda, Tartford
5 points: Hendinia, Land of DW, Skall
4 points: Bignia-Zaragovina, Isconia, Persephonia, Terra Avium

Ashton replaces Ramrynia on top of our points received list ( 0)( 0)
Federal Republic of Ashton (23), Ajanaeda (22), Bignia-Zaragovina (19), Ramrynia (17), Florina (16)
A Silent Film "Tomorrow"
LXXIV: did not qualify
This stunning melodic anthem cruelly failed to benefit from the expanded final, instead finishing THIRD LAST in its semi. Harmonica is literally praying for a chance to prove ourselves tomorrow (i.e. next contest).
...Or maybe sooner (see next post).
It's like an Iggy Azalea song without the massive flaw of being by Iggy Azalea. *.*
Pixikill "Scream"
Buzzjackfestivalen IV
A duo that's been in my potentials since the very beginning, but with another song. I hadn't bothered checking out their other stuff until recently and found myself a much better entry . Pixikill only have about five songs but they're well worth the time if you really like 'Scream'! Anyway, we fell just short of advancing last Buzzjackfestivalen, so can we get there this time?
I like this duo a lot, I've actually heard of them before after they followed me on twitter a while ago I listened to some of their songs, I think Vampire was the first one I heard and really liked that, they are one of those bands that just went out of my head though, so I'm really glad you've entered them, it's reminded me of how great they are, Scream is amazing
Morgan Page feat. Lissie "Open Heart"
LXXVI: did not qualify
Morgan Page feat. Lissie "The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Remix)"
2000s Dance Anthems Spin-Off: 27th!!
Took a FUN little risk here. Our top potential just happened to be ~of the dance category~ just as a dance-themed spin-off of BJSC surfaced. Lissie is an underrated fave of mine and she's done a few collabs with Morgan Page, so it just made sense to send them to both contests simultaneously! Best case scenario: both songs would help each other succeed. Worst case scenario: both would go unnoticed or get eaten alive by the other entries. In true Harmonica fashion, we went for the former and ended up with the latter!
I think Dance Anthems is 1BF so you don't have to worry about that not DNQ'ing.
Morgan Page had a song featured on Teen Wolf so glad to see that impacting Harmonica *hair flip*
Why do half of your posts in this forum mention whatever the hell 'Teen Wolf' is?
Also: no shit an artist has had a song featured on Teen Wolf, it seems to feature whatever it can get its hands on. Back when I used to watch it I once spotted Echosmith and Cardiknox (two consecutive BJSC entrants of mine, after I'd entered them) in the same episode.
(oh and for Jordan, good luck with Morgan Page, I like him)
'Open Heart' sounded pretty great in the sunshine today, Jordan . Rooting for it to be a rare Harmonican qualifier but of course can't do anything to help make that happen due to random.org's continued disdain for the Harmbuanda alliance.
I'd forgotten how much I like Lissie's voice <3 (actually I'd forgotten about Lissie altogether so cheers for inadvertedly reminding me of 'When I'm Alone' among other gems of hers)!
This is the most replies we've ever had with an entry!! Keep hyping please <3
We're in the same bloc for Dance Anthems!
*We sent "Love War" to YBO: Rejects and it finished in the bottom 5. It's only disappointing because pretty much all of our other DNQs would have done even worse "Ladies" would have smashed but we're saving that for the official Rejects at the end of the year. Be sure to nominate it!!!*
Jocelyn Alice "Jackpot"
LXXVII
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and desperate measures called for a journey to Canada, where this song was discovered and Jocelyn Alice was invited to represent Harmonica in its continuing quest to reach a final. The title is quite apt as we feel we've struck gold with this entry. Make this a reality for us and vote for her!!
How did I not see that coming?[/sarcasm]
I love it nonetheless.
kworb CANADA.
You're just jealous
A-Trak tho
Fair enough. Desperate times, as I said.
Jocelyn Alice "Jackpot"
LXXVII: 37th
Finishing 37th out of 42 doesn't really fit the theme of "hitting the jackpot" but we'll definitely take this as our best result and first qualifier since March. Harmonica was definitely in the right semifinal, finishing 10th there. The countries in Semi 2 just didn't take to it! Anyway we have these nations to thank for contributing points to our Jackpot:
15 points: Federal Republic of Ashton, Joedonia
13 points: Sandeborg
12 points: Pupok
11 points: Fljotavik, New Lexico
10 points: Bellamia, Florina
5 points: Cor Lupus, Singerpurear
4 points: Isconia, Taahino
3 points: Ajanaeda
2 points: N-Lazone
Ashton pulls farther ahead on our points received list! Formation of an alliance is going very smoothly indeed.
Also, Harmonica has withdrawn from participating in spin-offs until further notice. With these happening more frequently now we will have to be selective about which ones we can afford to compete in.
Phases "I'm In Love With My Life"
LXXVIII
Come and lose yourself a little while. Take a chance and let your body move. Feeling good ain't going out of style. We don't need a rhyme or reason. It's a love you can't explain. I'm in love with my life.
This has been on my potentials list for a few months now. Love it!!!
Phases "I'm In Love With My Life"
LXXVIII: 24th
What a result! Our entry barely scraped through to the final, actually being announced as a DNQ before a spreadsheet error was pointed out. We were then projected to finish last in the final, but the votes kept coming in and we finished 25th out of 42 (then being bumped up another place due to a disqualification)! Thanks to Ryan, Lee, and Cody Slayberry for sorting out the error (and Florina for breaking the tie that got us through!) so our song could really reach its potential in the final. Here are the countries who gave points to Harmonica this month:
18 points: Federal Republic of Ashton
15 points: Florina, Tartford
13 points: Singerpurear
12 points: Oslol, Terra Avium
11 points: Qarenfänghoney, Ramrynia
10 points: Farathyn, Skall
9 points: Flynnonda
5 points: Tinnmark
3 points: Aquafina, Séyetana, Unovia
2 points: Summericia
1 point: Yehesi
Harmonica is currently pressing its luck in the UK Chart Near Misses spin-off, with the All-American Rejects' best song "Move Along". It wouldn't take much for this to be our biggest spin-off success to date, but we'll see!
Rachael Lampa "Avalanche"
LXXIX
Last time we competed in Mulgracia (then known as Jamvale) we sent an all-time fave and regretted it hugely when it flopped. But now we're back and going to try it again with another tune of life! The timing seems right, with similarly-named Rachel Platten smashing charts with similar adult-contemporary prowess, and with Harmonica having its first ever Q streak! But most of our potential support seems to be in the opposite semi. We want to qualify more than ever so every country gets a chance to hear this song!
Rachael Lampa "Avalanche"
LXXIX: 39th
"Avalanche" didn't quite get an avalanche of votes, only 11 in total but 8 of them were for 10 or more points. This not only kept Rachael out of last place but gave Harmonica the highest average score of this contest, with 10.6! Our nation has deemed this a success as we have surprisingly managed 5 qualifying songs in 2015! We have a small list of countries to thank this time:
18 points: Ramrynia
15 points: Bellamia, FSR Rontvia
13 points: Federal Republic of Ashton
12 points: Altyr Muunilinst
11 points: Hushkanukia
10 points: Mulgracia, N-Lazone
7 points: Sandeborg
5 points: Ultraviolenceland
1 point: Botannika
Full points given/points received updates will be done following BJSC 80.
Ben Hazlewood "Wanted"
LXXX: did not qualify
Just like a year ago, we finish off the BJSC season with a New Zealand artist! Last year we sent a six-year-old song, whereas our current entry was released just three weeks before the contest opened, our first time sending a brand new song. This one has a huge amount of power (especially in the chorus, rather "Too Close"-esque) but somehow didn't stand out enough to come even close to qualifying.
HARMONICA'S FAVORITE ENTRIES OF 2015
1. Hushkanukia - Daniella Mason "Shade Of You"
2. Desbuanda - Eves The Behavior "TV"
3. Persephonia - A-WA "Habib Galbi"
4. Patvia - Koven "Miracle"
5. Yehesi - Yellow Claw feat. Ayden "Till It Hurts"
6. Aeroche - Kove feat. Moko "Hurts"
7. PRoJ - Everything Everything "Distant Past"
8. Jayrusalem - Bonnie Anderson "Unbroken"
9. Hushkanukia - PVRIS "St. Patrick"
10. Jayrusalem - Adam Rickfors feat. Marylin "Heartbeats"
Surprise! Only four of these songs received our top points, as some of these were massive growers after the contest. But all ten have repeatedly slayed us in some shape or form, none more so than Daniella Mason as "Shade Of You" led me to the rest of her music which has perhaps been the best discovery I've made all year, both in- and outside BJSC. But all of these songs, I could not give enough praise to if I tried.
Songs 11-50 will be coming later! I'm not giving out any clues!
"Open Heart" should have done waaaay better in Rejects tbh.
Oooh double Jayrusalem *.* I'm glad you like both of those! Unbroooooooooooooookeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
Shade of You, St. Patrick & Hurts are my top picks (Daniella even made it into my EOY chart ;o).
Oh yay, very happy to see A-WA so high for you! <3 Hoping I'll be able to give points to a few more Harmonican entries in 2016.
Pesky Hushkanukia swiping another victory from Eves.
Nah, I of course can completely get behind that #1 and actually prefer it to 'TV' (*Noahstalgia spoiler* OMG ). That top three is utterly flaw-free in fact.
I also really like 'Miracle', 'Distant Past', 'Unbroken' and 'St. Patrick' so it's a v nice list so far~
(Love the fact you're revealing your 11-50 after your top 10 lol. Who needs a climax when you can have a good countdown *.*)

Doop "Tequila"
LXXXI: did not qualify
It turns out that having the most attention-grabbing entry of the contest--in terms of the artist anyway, none other than the iconic one-hit wonder Doop--is not always the big advantage you might expect it to be. "Tequila" didn't even get that close to the final, but it did boost its YouTube play count past the lowly 8,500 mark, and revive the campaign for a Doop forum on Buzzjack, so small victories, yeah? Anyway, this is the second straight contest where we expected a hit and were left disappointed, so we're gonna go back to sending whatever and lowering our expectations.
Lipstick Gypsy "The Cure"
LXXXII :did not qualify
There has been a serious void in BJSC, sending participation numbers dangerously close to below the 60 mark and leaving the powerhouse ol boyz countries hogging the top 10 like a fart on a lift. What this contest needs is an all-male funk-pop duo to be the next major trend that nobody saw coming and finally give Harmonica some long-overdue respect. So yes indeed, this might really be "the cure". Well, maybe not, but finishing last in the semi only further proves our point~
Shaggy feat. RikRok "It Wasn't Me"
10th Anniversary: 21st
In honor of the Shaggy Artist Forum, coming soon to a Buzzjack near you and the one thing every member is looking forward to! We were stuck on what to send until this played on shuffle just a couple days before the confirmation deadline. Thank goodness! With no veto framework this time, this contest was probably the stiffest competition our country has ever seen so finishing in the top half is a fantastic accomplishment, and a great turn-around after slumping the past few months. Most of all we're proud to have found a song that represents Buzzjack and one we would firmly get behind anyway. Well done Shaggy!
Sizzy Rocket "Need Somebody"
LXXXIII: did not qualify
In our first two years of BJSC, the majority of artists we've sent flopped the first time and deserve a second chance. I can't say we ever anticipated going all the way back to our second contest and bringing back Sizzy Rocket, whose cover of the Beastie Boys' "Girls" did so very poorly in 65, until very recently coming across some of her just-released album. She's really figured out her sound and the video really adds so much more emotion to the song. This is Harmonica's 20th entry and probably one of our favorites, but somehow it ended up in the wrong semi or something. This DNQ hurts more than usual :\
Sleigh Bells "A/B Machines"
LXXXIV
This is what happens when BJSC stops paying attention to us. It hurts to be overshadowed month after month after month with such great entries, so if we DNQ this time at least no one can say that our entry went unnoticed. Don't get me wrong, we didn't send this just because it's loud, it's an anthem in its own right.
That bass *.*
This is actually pretty cool, looks like Team America might be swapping points after all (which would have happened in January had "Tequila" not DNQ'd)
Sleigh Bells "A/B Machines"
LXXXIV: 29th
It worked! Claims of Harmonica racism have temporarily subsided thanks to the following countries who were brave enough to show our entry some love:
15 points: Land of DW, Trifoski
12 points: Jadakissnia, Persephonia
11 points: Medhelnia, Seyetana, Terra Avium
10 points: Skall
9 points: Fljotavik
8 points: Aeroche
6 points: Cor Lupus
5 points: Altyr Muunilinst
3 points: Oslol
2 points: Summericia
1 point: Singerpurear
We have no plans yet for 85!
This was such a good entry have subsequently heard 'Infinity Guitars' as well which is also fab. Yay for finally pointing you *.*
Hope it's enough to repay you for the love you gave to "Dynasty"!
Megan McCauley "Die For You"
LXXXV: did not qualify
Harmonica selected its oldest song yet to enter BJSC, as this appeared on the Fantastic Four soundtrack nearly eleven years ago. Speaking of eleven, Bray informed me of an amazing coincidence: Megan is part of a FARC-hosted contest this month, when she was, believe it or not, the very first artist Jake sent under his original country name Kellyana Kingdom, back in BJSC 11! That was entirely unplanned and coincidental, buuut it ended up 21st in its semifinal, one place short of qualifying.
This is somehow not at all what I was expecting someone called Megan McCauley to sound like! It's like Evanescence crossed with Anastacia-esque vocals. Really liking this (and I was a big fan of 'A/B Machines' too as you know ~) May need to give 'Tap That' a listen too ;o
Well, it seems I'm allowed to post my potentials here, and I was stuck deciding between the two anyway, sooooooooooo here they are
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8nkErb3T9s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzpJLYeHIBk
The title of the first one is particularly apt for explaining what happened to us in 86.
Dunno if these are still on the cards for a potential Harmonica 87 entry but if so... that first song is quite a jam *.* Not as keen on the second ~
The second one is quite the choon tbh
I'd love to see them in Bjsc whatever one you choose *.
I prefer the second to the first if these are still your potentials
DESBUONICA EXCLUSIVE

At the same time, Harmonica is currently recalibrating its sound, with this iconic cover as our "hiatus entry" to hype our imminent comeback in 87. We shall return stronger than ever!
Where are Sleigh Bells!!! (SOFI TUKKER to win anyway The Flavr Blue to win out of Harmonica entries xx)
Absolutely LOVEEE your Reinvention entry, very Enter Shikari
I spy one of my potentials in that list!

Meg Mac "Never Be"
LXXXVII
We just sent Megan McCauley and now we send Meg Mac. Harmonica may have missed the Beaverdonia-hosted BJSC 86, but in true Beaverdonia fashion has recalibrated its sound with a fresh batch of possible entries and a little more hope of actually succeeding at something. This may not be the one to do it, but Meg is an Aussie with a fierce voice and the perfect message to represent our comeback.
Meg Mac "Never Be"
LXXXVII: 8th
8th
It took 23 contests and the fact that the artist we tried to send this month was already entered...for Harmonica to be in the BJSC top 10 for the first ever time! There was always a sense that 'Never Be' would have what it takes, but that sense was no different to most of our entries in the past, which has generally failed us. Nevertheless, this beats Coasts' 'A Rush of Blood' (71) to become our most successful entry, and only our third top 20 hit to date. Success feels so much sweeter when it takes this much patience to finally reach it.
THANKS TO ALL THESE COUNTRIES FOR POINTING US!!!
18 points: Beaverdonia
15 points: Aeroche, The Actual Republic of Bellamia, Bhangra
13 points: Aeyundore, Avalonia, Desbuanda, Federal Republic of Ashton
11 points: Unovia
10 points: Ultraviolenceland
9 points: Altyr Muunilinst
8 points: Daehun (), Jukianie, Land of DW, Seyetana, Syndare
7 points: Bignia-Zaragovina, Fljotavik
6 points: Cor Lupus, Ramrynia
4 points: Aelandor, Suedeonia
3 points: Cadelicia
2 points: #00274E, Quintessa
1 point: Greenfroze, St. Burbia
Congrats on finally getting a top 10!! x
(totally woulda been your 2nd if you'd actually sent Baha Men last month)
It's about time we had a points swap! #Justice4Tequila
Parri$ "Nasty"
LXXXVIII
The goal is to have a Q streak, for the first time since 78-79. We've stayed down under by entering our third New Zealand artist, otherwise it's not a typical Harmonican entry by any means. It sounded like a smash and we just wanted to claim it for ourselves. Let's see if last month was a real comeback or just a fluke.
(Your first Q streak began with Jocelyn Alice actually!)
I was pretty surprised to see Parris entered so soon as I thought her work was still too underground to surface over here. Glad to see this now!
i'm so glad SOMEONE entered this i squealed when i saw it in confirmations!!! the choreography is so meticulous and the song is fierce
Parri$ "Nasty"
LXXXVIII: 37th
Q STREAK ACHIEVED! Going from 8th in the semifinal to 37th in the final isn't the most graceful regression but we'll take it. Our second time finishing 37th after Jocelyn Alice "Jackpot" in 77, which started our previous Q streak a year ago! It certainly could have gone worse so thanks to the 20 countries who gave points to Parri$:
11 points: Espen, Skall
10 points: Jukianie, Lomaja
9 points: The Actual Republic of Bellamia
8 points: Kluminican Republic, Sandeborg
7 points: Buzzjack Mountain, Cor Lupus, St. Burbia, Unovia
6 points: Hushkanukia
5 points: Aeroche, Aeyundore, Triangledonia
4 points: Mulgracia
3 points: Botanikka, Deandria
2 points: Brechtoria
1 point: N DNTN
Our anticipated next entry is much more of a Meg Mac than a Parri$, and it's *probably* the most excited we've ever been about an entry! Stay tuned
bloody loved meg mac so anything like that is good in my book!
Joseph "White Flag"
LXXXIX
Sending an artist called Joseph is total BJSC goals tbh! This was our obvious next entry from the very first listen. You might be expecting a male soloist, probably with long hair, but this Joseph is a female trio and their song sounds a lot like First Aid Kit! Really thinking this could go down well as it has so many of the same qualities as 'Never Be' but is somehow even catchier. You're not gonna stop us getting throoooooough-ooh-ooh-ooh.
Joseph "White Flag"
LXXXIX: 18th
3 qualifiers in a row And our 4th top 20 hit! Here is our breakdown of points received/countries to thank:
15 points: Altyr Muunilinst, Ramrynia
13 points: The Actual Republic of Bellamia, Bignia-Zaragovina
12 points: Hushkanukia, Ultraviolenceland
11 points: Florina
10 points: Greenfroze, Singerpurear
9 points: Federal Republic of Ashton, Skall, Syndare, Taahino
8 points: Avalonia, New Lexico, Seyetana
6 points: Fljotavik
5 points: Mulgracia, Sandeborg
4 points: Desbuanda, FSR Rontvia
3 points: Aelandor
2 points: Daehun
1 point: Terra Avium
We are not sure what's in store for 90 yet, but once it's done we'll do a full update of points given/points received. Thanks again, Harmonica is finally starting to feel like a relevant nation!
The Wreckers "My Oh My"
Country Spin-off
This was Harmonica's most brutal selection process ever! In the end many faves were discarded in favor of one-album wonder The Wreckers, made up of the wonderful Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp. Their defining hit "Leave The Pieces" is also outstanding, but this one's just a little more country yet still Buzzjack-friendly so hopefully we made the right choice
Lauren Alaina "Road Less Traveled"
XC
Lauren is the second American Idol alum to represent Harmonica in BJSC, following Anoop Desai who DNQd in our third contest (66) but had enough support in Rejects to advance to the semis. A better result looks likely for Lauren, as thankfully our first country entry is in a semifinal with plenty of country fans! Most importantly, she could give Harmonica its longest Q streak with four in a row!
YASSS
Lauren Alaina "Road Less Traveled"
XC: 9th
We did it again! Breaking our record longest Q streak and getting possibly the highest position and points total for a country entry in 2016! Just feast your eyes on us getting our five 18s within the first ten votes, including http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=195403&st=20 *.* Heads were turning like crazy! This well-timed run of good fortune bodes well for TBO as we'll once again have five entries there, and *only* four in TBO Rejects.
Big thanks to these countries, look how top-heavy our votes were!
18 points: Avalonia, Hushkanukia, Ramrynia, Ultraviolenceland, Unovia
15 points: FSR Rontvia
13 points: Niceland, Oslol, The Actual Republic of Bellamia
12 points: Bignia-Zaragovina
11 points: Daehun
10 points: New Lexico
9 points: Mulgracia
8 points: Federal Republic of Ashton, Taahino
5 points: Pupok
4 points: Altyr Muunilinst, Seyetana
2 points: Greenfroze
1 point: Desbuanda
Full points given/points received update coming soon...probably! Followed by our top 50 entries of 2016 which is just now being compiled, will be a CHORE to narrow down but also a lot of fun. For the record, we're predicting Altyr Muunilinst to lead in points given and Ramrynia in points received (don't spoil, Bray, but if you see this do please send your spreadsheet over )
1. "Higher"
done
With BJSC 91 fast approaching it's time to reveal our top 50 entries from the past year. Aiming to post the top 10 on Monday and 11-50 on Tuesday. Any predictions?
HARMONICA'S FAVORITE ENTRIES OF 2016
1. Tinnmark - Carl Louis feat. Ary "Telescope"
2. Beaverdonia - Bang La Decks "Aide"
3. FARC - MUNA "Winterbreak"
4. Unovia - Ali Barter "Far Away"
5. Seyetana - Arion feat. Elize Ryd "At The Break Of Dawn"
6. FARC - Jones "Hoops"
7. N DNTN - Nadia Tehran "Cash Flow"
8. Mulgracia - Cobi "Don't You Cry For Me"
9. Altyr Muunilinst - Willa "Hey"
10. FSR Rontvia - KOLAJ "The Touch"
Seven of my top-pointers made it in the top 10, would've been eight if we'd actually been in 86 to vote for Willa. That leaves our highest 15-pointer, Cobi, and our highest 13-pointer, Jones! "Winterbreak" had our full support in TBO because it needed it, but "Aide" just edges it, our favorite winner of this year with the same amount of change-ups as "Free Tibet" in half the time. I never tired of "Aide" like I did with "Free Tibet" either, but it's enough of a gem to make the top 50 anyway [/spoiler]. And nothing this year was more beautiful than "Telescope", a song that moved our nation to tears when it was first introduced and many times thereafter. Many thanks to Tinnmark for sending it
Songs 11-50 will be coming later!
Was expecting to see MUNA at #1! ;o x
Bang La Decks, Ali Barter, Arion and Nadia Tehran are the highlights there for me <3 x
'Telescope' is not bad by any means but I always found it a bit unmemorable. Your #2 is quite the opposite of that however *.* What a banger.
'At The Break Of Dawn', 'Don't You Cry For Me' and 'The Touch' are my other favourite picks there
lmao just send more country
Wow at the "Dynasty" inclusion!
thanks for the inclusions glad to see someone rly loved kali uchis, i thin kit was my fave thing i sent last year!!!
Yesss @ noted Desbuonica smashes 'Winterbreak' and 'Cash Flow' finishing comfortably top 10 here! Have to agree I'm surprised the former didn't nab the #1, though I guess you can't argue with TEARS nor a monstrous ethnobanger to the dimensions of 'Aide' (which I'm listening back to now and you're right, it really doesn't lose its deranged charm or potency)~
Other standouts include 'Love Druggie', 'Blue Lights', 'Colorblind Cruisin'', 'Prisoner', 'First Time He Kissed A Boy', 'Want You', 'Tun Up', 'Threshold', and of course 'Matadora', which I thought would be Desbuanda's best shot here but knew wasn't guaranteed. Chuffed that it finishes the year with a cult hit status akin to the wondrous 'Winterbreak'.
Tall Heights "Spirit Cold"
XCI
It's not ideal to have a complete dry spell of possible entries while on your longest qualifying streak, but it's time to try something understated and risky. And it's nice to take a break from sending seven female artists in a row! Listen to the Youtube video rather than the MP3 as that sounds a little more like a demo whereas the version above makes the beautiful harmonies a LOT more prominent <333
Love this Jordan, my favourite from you so far.
Think this is up there with your best entries for me as well (and not surprised at Jacob loving it as it does sound very Aelandor, quite reminiscent of Bear's Den in particular)! Perhaps you should have dry spells of potential entries more often xx
Tall Heights "Spirit Cold"
XCI: 29th
Well that was our biggest surprise qualifier ever! We're up to five in a row now, one away from matching our longest DNQ streak. Folk is not exactly a successful genre in BJSC but somehow 22 countries had our entry in their top fifteen!
18 points: Aelandor
13 points: Altyr Muunilinst, Niceland
12 points: Hushkanukia, New Lexico
11 points: Tinnmark
10 points: Bignia-Zaragovina
9 points: Beaverdonia, Mulgracia
7 points: Florina, Quintessa, Zanmatony
6 points: Skall, Taahino
5 points: Aeroche
3 points: Jadakissnia, Republic of Adonia
2 points: Azure
1 point: Land of DW, Persephonia, Ramrynia, The Actual Republic of Bellamia
Thanks a billion! Here's to some more risks being taken in 2017! Also, 7000th post
Kaneholler "Paper Games"
XCII
The girl is Steven Tyler's daughter Chelsea, the guy is seemingly failed TV actor Jon Foster. The song is a bit more....trash-pop than we're used to sending, but we've done a U-turn from last month in that our list of potentials is now the strongest we've ever had. We still can't distinguish a hit from a non-hit (just see our last entry), but there IS a winning contender in here somewhere!
This might be the best Harmonica entry yet!
*gets 7 points*
Kaneholler "Paper Games"
XCII: 21st
With an entry that wasn't quite pop and wasn't quite dance, it was a bit of a risk having no real target audience in mind. We didn't really know WHO this would appeal to but we scraped the top half of the final AND had our BEST ever semi result, somehow getting 2nd! That 2nd-to-21st regression though
15 points: Altyr Muunilinst
13 points: Espen, Seyetana
12 points: Land of DW, Tartford
11 points: Ashton, Cor Lupus, Jadakissnia, Singerpurear
10 points: Cor Lupus
9 points: Zanmatony
8 points: Quintessa
7 points: Daehun
6 points: Kluminican Republic, Persephonia
5 points: Unovia
4 points: #00274E, Greenfroze
2 points: -Pi, Cadelicia, D'yermak'er
1 point: Oslol
Stay tuned to see if we really try to get a 7th Q in a row...but first, Masquerade results!
I only gave you ten points (Sam posted Jade's votes instead of mine in the graphic, my 11 went to Altyr), but at least I managed to break this trend:
Would have loved this to live up to its semi-final result! One of the biggest growers of the contest. Very kool
LATE but I am still listening to 'Paper Games' loads post-contest Could possibly overtake 'A/B Machines' as my favourite entry of yours I really thought it was going to be a smash in the final so it's a shame that it didn't quite make the top 20. But a 2nd place in the semi final is nothing to sniff at *.*
Congrats on doing so well in Masquerade also! 'Jason' was very much to my tastes in fact quite a few people on plug suspected that it might have been me that sent it what an amazing discovery. <3
BJSC Masquerade: 2nd!!!
Seriously!? Yes, we managed to fool everyone by masquerading as Eledan, -Pi, and everything in between. In doing so we had our most successful entry ever and were only 3 points from winning the spin-off! It was fitting yet bittersweet for The Midnight as they'd been runners-up in the main contest as well, and this one could have been avoided if Pavel had actually voted, but hey, we're beyond thrilled. Deandria masqueraded as Harmonica and did so with a very unknown yet fabulous Sizzy Rocket song, 'Spell On Me'. Overall it was one of the best spin-offs we've participated in to date!
Ary "Higher"
XCIII
In true Harmonica fashion, this was our intended entry for 91 that we completely forgot about when confirmations came around. It's much more fitting now, though, as Ary's BJSC debut was in the previous Danaelanda-hosted contest as a vocalist on Carl Louis' 'Telescope'. That was our favorite entry of 2016 which led to searching out Ary as a solo artist. 'Telescope' barely made it to the final so 'Higher' could well be at risk of ruining our Q streak, but it was simply too good not to send! Hopefully it's an equally good discovery for someone else.
not a discovery in the least for me but i am already a fan of this!!
Ary "Higher"
XCIII: 33rd
Our Q streak is up to 8! Honestly thought this would be the one to DNQ but y'all thought better of it. Another bad regression though, 'Higher' was 12th in its semi and would have been projected to finish 20th! Anywho, thanks to these 17 countries for their support in the final:
18 points: #00274E, Fljotavik
12 points: Ultraviolenceland
11 points: Deandria
10 points: Land of DW
7 points: Skall, South Danaelanda
6 points: Bhangra
5 points: Beaverdonia, Desbuanda, Republique d'Ashton
3 points: Daehun, Oslol
2 points: Yehesi
1 point: Espen, Taahino
BJSC 80s: 17th
A mid-table finish for one of our favorite 80s songs was slightly disappointing, but objectively quite good! We're especially glad that others enjoyed the song and appreciate the 109 points. Unfortunately Harmonica is anticipating another break from spin-offs unless something truly unmissable comes around in the meantime.
Northeast Party House "For You"
XCIV: did not qualify
Yes, this was planned in advance with us entering the band in Nuggets before BJSC. It's our 30th entry and we genuinely weren't sure how it would do, just kinda seeing how long our Q streak will last! It's kind of a Bloc Party-meets-Silverchair sound?? I guess y'all weren't here for it, so our Q streak is brought to an end at 7.
Jillian Jacqueline "Reasons"
XCV: did not qualify
Kind of our second country entry, but really the first song that came to mind was 'Water Under The Bridge' so I'd definitely say there's more of a pop feel to it. Either way, this turned out to be a bigger risk than intended, being one of few pop entries in a very non-pop semifinal. Unfortunately most of its potential fans were in the opposite semi, which led to Jillian's downfall.
Another really catchy entry from you! Growing on me with every listen!
Baha Men "Accident"
Buzzjackfestivalen V
Last July we had two Baha Men songs as potentials, but couldn't decide between them and ended up forgetting to enter BJSC 86 altogether. We immediately found a hot streak after that, so the timing was never right to try the Baha Men again until now. The main risk is that there is a lot of novelty entries that could cancel each other out. We've just barely fallen short of qualifying our first two times in Buzzjackfestivalen, so hopefully third time's a charm!
This is a BANGER. *.* rooting for you in our heat!
Moment "All This Time"
XCVI: did not qualify
They just qualified with 'Indigo', which was one of the best entries of the year so far but settled for a bottom-half finish in the final IIRC. For whatever reason the familiarity did not work in our favor or lead to Moment improving on that performance, instead suffering diminishing returns and extending our flop streak. Should it have been a Michelle McManus cover after all?
"Indigo" was like 14th I think.
Kari Kimmel "Can You Feel It"
XCVII: did not qualify
Been meaning to get Kari Kimmel into BJSC since last year, but it took some time to find the right song to send. This one felt right as it's one of her most anthemic, plus catchy and well-produced, although it has the disadvantage of not being on Spotify, iTunes, OR Amazon, and not Youtube either until I uploaded it myself! It was in the wrong semi too, which meant a third consecutive DNQ for us.
Blondage "Dive"
XCVIII
A male-female edgy pop duo in the vein of former Harmonican artists Holychild and Kaneholler, we are VERY excited about Blondage and think 'Dive' is our strongest entry of the year so far! Hopefully it's just what we need to break our DNQ streak. We'll go ahead and predict a 21st-place finish to match 'Paper Games', but top 10 or top 15 would certainly be welcome!
[/pippa]
Recommended by Zanmatony for your 100th contest;
Blondage "Dive"
XCVIII: 42nd
Our first last place! *.* Of all the things we thought this entry might be remembered for, this definitely wasn't it. We finally broke our DNQ streak which is all that really matters, but there's far better stats to digest here. Blondage bathed in the trickle points, with 60 points spread out between 18 different voters. In fact, only two countries put 'Dive' in their top 10 (the rest were all 1-5 points), so under the old 12-point system it would've had like 10 total points! Kind of a shame since we love this entry so much, but it's nice to finally be memorable for the first time in months.
Here's the full and fascinating votes spread. Thank you to these countries!
11 points: Cor Lupus
9 points: Yehesi
5 points: Desbuanda
4 points: Cadelicia, Seyetana, Thelonia, Triangledonia, Unovia
3 points: Zanmatony
2 points: Aeroche, Altyr Muunilinst, FSR Rontvia
1 point: Azure, Cowtermont, Cumulonimbia, Hushkanukia, Jupiterdonia, New Lexico
(I'm so tired that I typed "The Rock" as one of the countries giving us 4 points. Thank you, The Rock.)
Hollyn "Alone"
XCIX
This is the first time we've sent a song that we only discovered the day before the confirmation deadline. Just two months ago a different Hollyn song was nearly sent by us, but we're confident this is a much stronger entry (once we removed the rather off-putting rap verse). Could've easily cut it down to 3 minutes and saved this for Buzzjackfestivalen but we were desperate and couldn't hold on to this! Hope it pays off!
Loving this! Hope it can qualify for you!
Hollyn "Alone"
XCIX: 13th
Not only did we get our fifth qualifier of the year, matching our 5 qualifications in each of the past two years, but Hollyn gave us our best finish of the year so far, easily surpassing 'Paper Games' by Kaneholler! We'll see what happens, but it would be pretty amazing to get a 6th qualifier in the 100th BJSC contest.
We did not get a chance to thank countries individually, so here's our list of the countries that gave points to 'Alone' - thank you all!
18 points: Aelandor, Republique d'Ashton, Seyetana
15 points: Niceland, Ultraviolenceland
13 points: Altyr Muunilinst, Jukianie
12 points: Lotunia, The Actual Republic of Bellamia
10 points: Daehun
9 points: Medhelnia
8 points: New Lexico, Unovia
7 points: Azure, Taahino
6 points: Bignia-Zaragovina, Terra Avium, Triangledonia
5 points: Hushkanukia, Sandeborg, Singerpurear
3 points: Desbuanda, Jupiterdonia, Land of DW, Ojnoj, Ramrynia, Tartford
2 points: Quintessa
Last time half our voters gave us 2 points or less; this time only one country did. We'll update our points given/points received after the next contest!
Daniella Mason "Cover The Earth"
C: did not qualify
Two reasons for sending Daniella Mason this month: one, because she's responsible for our favorite entry of all time so it's only fitting to recycle her for the 100th contest,
and two, because she first represented Hushkanukia who are reportedly participating for the last time! Lucky for us, Daniella released her new album just three days before confirmations opened, and it's a very good album. This is the last song on it, which makes it even more fitting as our entry for this contest! And, according to the Youtube comments, apparently our previous artist Hollyn is a fan!
Unfortunately this got swallowed up amongst the other amazing entries in this milestone contest, but it did get nominated for TBO: Rejects!
HARMONICA'S FAVORITE ENTRIES OF 2017
1. Kluminican Republic - RUFUS "Innerbloom"
2. South Danaelanda - Gareth Emery & Standerwick feat. Hailene "Saving Light"

8. FARC - Robinson "Don't You Forget About Me"
9. Republique d'Ashton - Dragonette "Darth Vader"
10. Ojnoj - SAARA "Superpowers"
Seven of our top-pointers made it in the top 10, the other three being our highest 13-pointer (Jaded), our highest 15-pointer (Robinson), and "Superpowers" which received only six points from us! There was no stopping "Innerbloom" on this list, from the very first listen I knew it was going to be one of our favorite entries ever, let alone of the year. Thank you Kluminican Republic for sending it. Also, shout out to Ultraviolenceland for getting two entries in our top 5! And a shout out to Desbuanda just because
Songs 11-50 will be coming later (hopefully tomorrow)!
oh wow I’m surprised it’s not indigo

34 countries represented in our top 50, not bad! Keep in mind that all of these are a 9/10 at least and most are 10/10 or 11/10. I think Yehesi and Oslol have the most entries with three each. And I omitted one entry that will appear in my personal chart EOY instead.
Stay tuned to see what we entered into the Andra Chansen contest!
Is it one of these?
'Chariots' being in the EOY top 10 for two different countries, the impact.
Wallis Bird "Hardly Hardly"
Andra Chansen
Originally sent by Palmyra back in our second contest in 2014, this entry completely passed us by due to being in the opposite semi, until finally hearing it while nominating for TBO Rejects and it was SO instant. There were loads of fabulous flops to pick from for this Andra Chansen contest, but we felt this would stand out and even more so being near the end of the running order! For fun's sake here are the other entries that made our shortlist, including one of our own:
Cumulonimbia - Jones "Deep"
Harmonica - The Flavr Blue "We Can Go Blind"
Pupok - Marina Kaye "Dancing With The Devil"
Republic of Adonia - Anna Of The North "The Dreamer"
Joshua Micah "Who Says"
CI
This was already in our top 5 favorite entries of all time even before we sent it! It's a really really special one for us so hopefully it'll make an impression on at least one other person/country
Another great song Love the beat and the lyrics are really nice as well!
Wallis Bird "Hardly Hardly"
Andra Chansen: 17th
We did it! We re-introduced 'Hardly Hardly' to the BJSC and they embraced it this time In fact it was just 2 points away from making the top half of the scoreboard.
12 points: Desbuanda
10 points: Hushkanukia

Joshua Micah "Who Says"
CI: 34th
So, we did the unthinkable and got a twink in the final without the help of Actual Bellamia or Bignia-Zaragovina and with the final being smaller than usual too. A finish near the bottom was to be expected really, but it's always nice to start the year off with a song qualifying, especially when it's one of your favorite entries you've ever sent. We managed to get votes from 16 countries, and honestly are really shocked at some of those that pointed it, so thanks!

Malory "Rapture"
CII: did not qualify
Malory is a singer from South London and 'Rapture' was discovered on an episode of The Challenge on MTV! Was hoping y'all would appreciate her lovely voice, the way the verses build, and the "ethereal perfection" as one Soundcloud comment puts it...but only like three people voted for it in the semifinal
Marc E. Bassy feat. Kyle "Plot Twist"
CIII: did not qualify
PLOT TWIST INDEED. I never thought it would end up like this.
It should be no secret that 'iSpy' was my least favorite song of 2017. Awful awful awful, I hoped to never hear from Kyle again after that.
I was first introduced to 'Plot Twist' in its remix form which featured Hailee Steinfeld. Obviously that'd be vetoed, so I ventured further and found the original. Gave it a go, what's the worst that could happen etc....lo and behold Kyle's version is just as good as Hailee's . I didn't send it last month because I couldn't bear to see it bottom 3 in the semi, then I ended up getting bottom 3 in the semi anyway. This did just a little bit better (still DNQd tho), so maybe it should've been sent last month in the first place. Seriously though, TUNE <3
Ary "Already There"
CIV: did not qualify
Happy 40th anniversary to ourselves We mark the occasion by sending (for a second time) Ary, the vocalist on our second-favorite BJSC entry of all time. We were going to save this for BJFestivalen, but the circumstances were right and we're too excited to wait on this one! 'Already There' is soooo much more instant than her last entry ('Higher', which scraped through to the final in 93) so hopefully Ary will get a new peak in BJSC!
Edit: Still not over this
i don't think this should just be ary's biggest hit but hopefully yours as well. deciding to stan!!!
I can see this doing pretty well actually! Good thing you sent it to the main contest!
Dinovski feat. Caitlyn Scarlett "Island Of Sin"
CV: did not qualify
Another entry of ours gets completely overlooked, despite being perfect for summer and sounding like something a handful of Buzzfaves would record (Dua especially came to mind). Our DNQ streak is now 4, our longest since 80-83!
Ocean Park Standoff feat. Lil Yachty "If You Were Mine"
CVI
A male pop entry with a featured rapper, what could possibly go wrong? This was a radio discovery, our third this year following 'Who Says?' and 'Plot Twist'. It was surprisingly instant for us and we're in a pop-friendly semi so we'll see if a miracle can happen. Just hoping one or two people will like it really!
Edit: apparently Samantha Ronson is in this band!? That's weird
Edit: Happy 5-year Buzzjack anniversary to me
! The Jadakissnia impakt *_*
(I don't think I realised before that Samantha Ronson is Mark's brother as well)
Ocean Park Standoff feat. Lil Yachty "If You Were Mine"
CVI: 33rd
It worked, we qualified! It was never meant to be the most memorable entry but for just a simple and catchy song it was definitely worth sending. Stay tuned to see what we've got lined up for August! And for now, thanks to the following 17 countries for pointing us:
15 points: Ramrynia
12 points: Frandoot, Oslol
11 points: Aeroche, Enty, Tinnmark
9 points: New Lexico

The Aces "Put It On The Line"
CVII
Saw this band live two months ago and just had to send them here! It's our first even remotely rock entry in nearly two years. Also didn't realize Triangledonia had sent The Aces exactly two years ago (in BJSC 87) and they DNQd, so here they are again aiming for justice.
Liking this one a lot, really hoping it can do a lot better than the rest of your entries this year so far! <3
Campsite Dream "Dreams"
Re-Invention II: 25th
Twas a bit of a risk to send a tropical house cover when it's no longer a trend, and when the original is so highly regarded here, but twas nice to get this off our potentials list after a year and a half. It sadly didn't do as well as our previous Re-Invention entry (The Amity Affliction's screamo cover of Lana's 'Born To Die') but this easily could've been bottom 5 so fortunately we were spared that embarrassment!
The Aces "Put It On The Line"
CVII: 18th
BLOWN AWAY by the success of this entry! Not only did we avenge The Aces' previous DNQ, we got ourselves our first Q streak in 8 contests, our first top 30 in 8 contests AND our first top 20 in 8 contests! Aeroche and Cor Lupus who? Obligatory thanks to the following!
15 points: New Lexico, Trifoski
13 points: Florina, Holland-Oats

That might have been my favorite song from them since Physical
for KING & COUNTRY "joy."
CVIII
Hey, we were sending Christian entries before it became popular. That said I can't believe we're actually sending this one! We do like to alternate between male artists and female artists, plus it's certainly gonna stand out. Do you choose joy? Let it move you
what hot AC station did you pull this from?
since nobody posted the stats, this song got the best reaction of the lot last night! (unless some overtook by the end I dunno).
I know you like stat type things etc
really pleased for you getting ur first top 5, what a great song Jordan. video was very cool as well!
for KING & COUNTRY "joy."
CVIII: 4th
Omg!!!
Prior to this contest, we had entered BJSC 43 times, never finished top 5, finished top 10 only twice and never higher than 8th, and of course DNQd more than half the time. We had pretty much accepted that a top 5 finish was never going to happen. Even with this entry, it's a Christian song with male vocals, presumably niche, a surefire DNQ but at least something we loved and knew would have enough fans (such as, say, two?) to be worth sending.
Instead this is 4th place and therefore one for the history books. We were even winning at one point in the results, for the first time since Lauren Alaina epic streak of 18s in BJSC 90. 'Joy' probably doesn't even rank that high among our favorite entries, so it might take a while to feel real that 'Never Be' isn't our biggest hit anymore, but it's still definitely a special one, just one we weren't confident in at all It's currently #49 in the YTD as well, another achievement that never happens to us!
Anyway, 244 points and here's where they fell. Thanks to all 28 of you, being in the top 3 for 10 different countries speaks for itself!

BJSC Masquerade II: 16th
It was an absolute honor to be assigned Florina for this edition of Masquerade! Our favorite Florinan artist is Young Summer, but we knew Florina is no longer fond of her, so we went with our second fave instead, Echos, in search of some justice for 'Gold'. A quick search showed that nothing else from Echos really sounded like 'Gold', and a lot of their songs were the type that'd easily be dismissed as generic Spotify fodder. But 'Cold Skin' stood out from the pack so we gave it a shot. Thankfully many others enjoyed it, as our expectations of bottom 10 never came to be!
Florina sort of masqueraded as Harmonica too! They actually were assigned Jupiterdonia and entered Smallpools, but 'Stumblin' Home' features The Aces who we of course sent by us in 107. Our actual doppelganger was FSR Rontvia, who did so with an amazing Lauren Alaina song, 'Three'. That one did get bottom 10, 2nd-to-last if I remember correctly. It's a shame, as the song tells a great story of how Lauren and so many others have sacrificed for years and years just for the chance to hear their song on the radio. One of her best songs that I've heard, so thanks for the discovery!
American Authors "Deep Water"
CIX
So this entry continues two Harmonican trends at once. First, it is another vaguely Christian song! Second, it's another artist with one of the Worst Songs Of All Time. We've already sent Kyle and Lil Yachty, both of whom were responsible for 'iSpy', and now we send American Authors who inflicted us with 'Best Day Of My Life' just about five years ago. But we're not sending 'Deep Water' for either of those reasons, simply just because it's beautiful
Bray tells us this song is another Imagine Dragons soundalike (specifically 'Radioactive'), but I can't quite hear it. Is it just me?
On another listen 'Believer' actually probably is a closer fit than 'Radioactive' - it's all in the backing vocals.
American Authors "Deep Water"
CIX: 28th
We'll take 28th! This was unsurprisingly a polarizing entry, only 15 votes but we slayed the medal positions (and especially the Norwegian vote ). Best of all, we bounced back from four DNQs in a row to four Qs in a row, and five Qs this year for the fourth year in a row! Honestly we'd written off any chance of that happening back in July! Here's where our 142 points came from.
18 points: Flynnonda, Lotunia, Tinnmark
15 points: East Rukahavian, Wholune
12 points: Niceland
8 points: Thelonia
7 points: Hendinia
6 points: Beaverdonia, New Lexico, Republique d'Ashton

3 points: Unovia
2 points: Land of DW
Thanks to all 15 of you!
HOLYCHILD "Wishing You Away"
CX
Holychild is the third self-recycle in Harmonican history, following Sizzy Rocket and Ary, both of which DNQd when they were sent the second time. That may not bode well for "Wishing You Away", but we never had that in mind when we considered it. It stands out massively and has quite the anthemic feel which should work in its favor, right? Plus, we'll find any excuse to keep seeking #justiceforAry (be sure to pre-save 'Already There' in your Rejects nominations!).
HOLYCHILD "Wishing You Away"
CX: 13th
Delayed reaction but yessss!!! Five qualifiers in a row is our longest streak since our record of seven in 87-93, and six qualifiers for the year is our most ever, having had five in each of the previous three years! And it's Holychild's best BJSC success to date, finally reaching the top 15 on their third attempt! A lot to celebrate here and a lot of countries to thank as always!

Shout out to Bhangra getting FIVE entries in our top 50 of the year! With something like 500 BJSC entries in total this year that's pretty remarkable. 30 other countries appear here at least once. Can't wait to see what 2019 brings!

From Holychild to Holy Ghost! After that month or so off, our leftover potentials weren't sounding so fresh, so on a whim we sent a track I discovered at a gas station just before confirmations opened! It's several years old now but sounds just fine in 2019. It's not quite the safe choice we originally had in mind to achieve our longest Q streak to date, but safe's not so fun and a risk felt right. Help it pay off and give us that sixth consecutive Q anyway!

Spared from the bottom two only due to someone else's deduction, but we successfully avenged Holy Ghost's previous DNQ from when they represented Utopia in LVII! Harmonica loves serving justice almost as much as they love serving pancakes. Thanks to these countries who made sure we left Oslol with our dignity still intact. An 8 from Daehun is all the validation we need tbh *.* But seriously thanks to all who voted for our entry Our potentials for 102 are all over the musical spectrum so stay tuned!

Discovered: Triple J, January 2019
G Flip is seeking justice for DNQing for Fljotavik in BJSC 104, which coincidentally is the same contest that we DNQd with Ary, the most unfair DNQ in Harmonican history. Is this a good coincidence or a bad coincidence? There's also another thing we're trying to accomplish this contest. We're not going to mention the thing, but we are going to make indirect references to the thing. Are we going to accomplish the thing??? Stay tuned I guess!!!
Triple J really is the gift that keeps on giving
G Flip has really improved since her last BJSC outing, have you heard “Drink Too Much” yet? It’s just as good

WOW, what a strong contest. G Flip was bottom 3 in the early stages of final results, but fought her way up to a 26th-place finish. We also had especially strong support in our semifinal where we were grouped with nearly all of our potential fans, resulting in 7th place there. Also, we accomplished the thing!!! Maybe we can accomplish another thing in 113 (I'm trying not to jinx it)
Really loved this entry! Still spinning this track a fair bit now.

This feels like a risk, but a safe entry didn't seem right this month despite the circumstances. Actually when you're in our position everything sounds like a risk! So no expectations for this one. We're probably going to have a string of consecutive entries from Australia/NZ, this being the second, unless we do something special for our 50th contest next month (although it won't be an anniversary entry as it appears those need to be submitted two months in advance, oops x)

So next is our 50th contest and we're as ill-prepared as ever, what better way to celebrate than to have our delegates plan last-minute in true Harmonican fashion. So stay tuned but don't hold your breath!

Here it is, our 50th BJSC entry! We were going to select from our favorite rejected potentials of the last 5 years, but in the end those songs weren't sent for a reason so they'll remain that way for now. Instead we went for female pure pop just as we did for our first entry in 64. Sounds a bit out of place having already listened to the semifinal twice, but just having an actual melody made it stand out in a good way. Did we calculate this entry correctly? (Edit: we didn't )
(Speaking of which, I definitely mis-calculated earlier and only just realized we broke our record-longest Q streak last month. I was deliberately not mentioning that to avoid it being jinxed, but it's safe to do so now so YAY *.*)

Well, our Q streak has reset to zero which means we're back in our comfort zone. Finally it's time to send the song that's been our backup entry for the past several contests - it genuinely has been at least seven! There's always been another song that felt more right at the time, but maybe this one isn't as risky as we thought. Edit: it was Discovered from the same source that gave us For King & Country "Joy.", our biggest smash to date, so that's one thing going for it. Give Harmonica all your love please!!!

Our latest New Zealand-based entry comes from BENEE, the artist behind the hit 'Soaked' (who since changed her name a little bit). Long story short, the rest of her EP wasn't very BJSC-friendly so I went with my personal fave. It didn't do well but a few of our other potentials did! (We passed on 'I'm Good', didn't think it sounded like a hit let alone a winner, ah well )

Been saving this for a couple months and it's STILL growing on me with every listen! We sent Joseph three years ago with "White Flag" to a roaring top 20 success, and the trio has come back with somehow possibly an even better song. This failing to break our DNQ streak shows there's truly no justice in the world. THAT SECOND CHORUS THO.

After too many DNQs in a row, Harmonica had to stop getting emotionally invested in their entries, and instead waited until the last day or so of confirmations to discover a song worth sending. It was a great find to be fair, with Sophie's voice fitting somewhere between Florence Welch and Alice Merton, and that hook sounding like "Ship To Wreck" too! BJSC continued to not care, but that's okay. Sophie could well be back soon as she has another worthy song selection!

Finally our first 90s entry!! This song has been known in Harmonica since 2013, somehow this mostly-British band landed a #77 hit in America after their UK chart career had ended. It's a total earworm and will easily be one of our favorite entries ever. We can only hope there's some pop and 90s appreciation in our semifinal!

This post serves two purposes: First, a reminder that THIS SONG IS IN TBO AND YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR IT (as well as Flight Facilities' 'All Your Love', which was our best-performing DNQ of 2019 and made it through the first round of heats)! Second, celebrating that it was Harmonica's most successful entry of the year (i.e. our only top 20 hit) and deservedly so! Many thanks to those listed above, including what I believe is the only 18 we've received all year.
Stay tuned as we update our voting history and announce our top 50 favorite entries of 2019!
Before we can move on to 2020 we have to wrap up 2019! This was one of our two favorite years of BJSC, if not our favorite altogether! Almost every contest was a way higher quality than average and our 18-pointers were always incredibly strong. However, Harmonica itself has been rather aimless and uninspired as of late. We are considering a break from the contest in the near future for this reason, but if the contest continues to be great in 2020 it will be tough to drop out! The best part is supporting our favorite entries, so on that note let's do just that!

If you know Harmonica you know we love Norwegian artists (Ary, Anna of the North, Emilie Nicolas, and now Moyka) and just about anything from New Zealand (most of our 2019 entries, plus Openside on this list). But the best country of ALL this year was Vulkyria, earning two of our 18s and appearing consistently in our votes. Well done!
The rest of our top 50 will come in the next few days. (Also we've still got two entries in TBO!! Keep voting for us xx)

Passing up on smashes is our new talent I suppose. Sorry if your country's not on this list, but you're probably somewhere on the year-end playlist which is 182 songs total!

We actually nearly sent a Robinson song two years ago, shortly after 'Don't You Forget About Me' which is now in our all-time fave territory. This entry is more of a happy accident as we were blissfully unaware it was the exact same Robinson who won a few contests back. She qualified for us anyway, so we've got our Q streak back! How far can she go in the final?

With 'Blinding Lights' at #1, 'Physical' top 3 and 'Break Up Song' top 10, an 80s-sounding song seemed like a good idea (ignoring that we didn't have many potentials to pick from anyway!). Instead, we finished last in the semi. Whoops!

It's our 60th entry!!! We went for something special this time after not doing so for our 50th anniversary entry. This has been a potential since Summer 2016 but you can tell it's a very unique-sounding remix, and could easily go unappreciated. Well, with how we'd done the past two contests and three of our other potentials being taken, there was nothing to lose, and yet we lost anyway. An ASMR-friendly entry *.*

Here is Harmonica back in its element, sending not just its preferred genre of pop-rock but a song by a duo. We love a duo! Overcoats hope to follow the footsteps of Holychild, Kaneholler, For King & Country, and most recently Voice Of The Beehive to grab the attention of BJSC. Feeling confident about this one for a change, that's never a good sign is it?
Sky is falling but we'll get through it

This entry had been at least a year in the waiting! I had two Bailen songs that I really liked and wanted to test the waters by sending them to Nuggets first. Naturally there was an extra-long break between Nuggets contests, but it was worth the wait as 'Your Love Is All I Know' did reasonably well there! 'I Was Wrong' is actually my fave, but didn't seem rock-y enough for Nuggets, so here it was representing Harmonica in BJSC. Thought it might actually stand a chance with so many countries having to send their backup entries this time, but alas my strategy didn't pay off Back to the drawing board we go!

Hoping this entry is a pleasant surprise for those who remember Le Youth from several years ago but hadn't listened to them since then - it sure was for me! It did, it did beat our previous YTD peak of 25th! Our first top-half finish of 2020 In fact this is probably our most successful dance entry to date, impressive considering considering its tempo and how much of the song is instrumental but the vocals are still a highlight, so lush Thanks to these countries for giving this unconventional Harmonican entry a chance! Still two more chances for us to achieve a top 20 hit this year. Hope you'll keep supporting us

This became Harmonica's oldest entry to date, dating back to 1992! Before that our oldest was from 1996: Voice Of The Beehive's 'Scary Kisses', which we sent exactly 10 contests ago. This was also one of Harmonica's longest entries ever, with this version clocking in at 6:58. How's that for breaking stereotypes! The radio edit just doesn't quite do it justice. Any 90s dance entry is guaranteed to have fans here in BJSC, and 'Maria' was no exception, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to stop our DNQ streak.

It could only be 'Spaces' for the EOY #1, with the disclaimer that we actually tried sending it ourselves and were beaten to the punch! Moyka's other entry 'Colder', sent by Florina, was #3 in our 2019 EOY, and I believe she's the second Norwegian to top our BJSC EOY, after Ary did it in 2015 on Carl Louis' 'Telescope', sent by Tinnmark. Of course we ended up sending Ary ourselves twice since then and hope to do the same with Moyka one day!
New Lexico was one of two countries to get two of our 18s last year, both of which are here. They also made our EOY top 10 last year with chloe mk's 'To Be Young', and climbed from 17th to 9th in our 'points given' voting history in 2020.
So, since 'Spaces' was technically not a discovery, that makes 'Wildfires' our favorite discovery of the year! Everything further down was almost impossible to rank, there's barely anything separating the songs between #5 and #15 (to be revealed). Nevertheless, the rest of the top 50 will be revealed shortly!

Yes, I say this all the time but this was genuinely unexpected This song was sat on for a few months thinking it was a sure-fire DNQ, but curiosity eventually took over and we had to find out if anyone else would like it. We were fortunate to be in a pop-friendly semi where this placed 13th! The final results were a big surprise at first, as we spent most of the night in the top 20, but it didn't last. We've now gone 11 contests without a top 20 hit, so it was nice to get a little taste of it!

After last month's result, Harmonica scrapped its potentials list and started from scratch. This was a highlight of Triple J's Hottest 100 but just a little too weird for a Harmonica entry, that is until this collab version was released just this month! Does the name ring a bell? Rye Rye was championed by M.I.A. a decade ago, she made a handful of bops although she didn't get much mileage from that endorsement. The drought is over! Harmonica has a top-10 song for the first time in 3 years/30 contests! 'Stay' becomes only the fourth top-10 in Harmonican history (that's 74 contests), and better yet, it's Harmonica's second-biggest hit of all time, behind only the 4th-place 'Joy'! It also keeps up Moyka's top-10 streak, as all three of her entries have finished in single-digits; this one beats her debut 'Colder' by one place. It's been a rough few years of little to no success in this contest, but finally scoring another hit was worth the wait. Thank you!

Our trilogy of Canadian entries is finally over, so back to New Zealand we go! Ladyhawke has been a fave ever since 'My Delirium' and 'Magic' on her debut; her other releases have been hit-and-miss, but our source liked this one enough to pass it on - and so did we! It'll be interesting to see if the voters remember Ladyhawke from way back when and how they respond to a current song of hers. That said, we need another qualifier to maintain our streak of 5+ qualifiers a year, so give this one a chance!

One of my favorite +18s is missing here, AJA 'Red Button', since it was a potential of mine, I don't associate it with BJSC and it's appearing in my main EOY.

After sending Michigander to Nuggets a year or so ago, I kept tabs on them and ended up liking this one even more. The video is just adorable I was hoping not to leave it too late for people to recall them, but that may have happened. Even being in a rock-heavy semi didn't work to our advantage, and thus, our Q streak ends at 3. </3
Yay so happy to see three songs of Bøtanikkä included in your YEC! Thanks Jordan

We previously sent The Rocket Summer in Harmonica's very first year of competing, back in 2014, and didn't qualify, so he's already redeemed himself from 7+ years ago which is great! Fun fact, 'So Much Love' was 7 years old by the time we entered it, and similarly, 'Same Air' is over 6 years old now.
This is the eighth artist recycle in Harmonica history and a record-breaking biggest gap between the artist's first and second entry, at 74 contests (68 to 142)! That record gap had just been broken 3 contests ago by Jocelyn Alice, with a 62-contest gap between her entries in 77 & 139. Our other previous artist recycles, listed by gap between entries, include Holychild (73 & 110), Joseph (89 & 118), Black Atlass (117 & 136), Sizzy Rocket (65 & 83), Ary (93 & 104), and Overcoats (126 & 129).

Well, The Rocket Summer got his revenge, so in that sense it was a success. The points were few and far between with only 11 countries voting for 'Same Air', so maybe we were justified in not sending it back in 2015-2016, but it sure has aged well and we appreciate the support nonetheless, especially the 18 from Singerpurear!

Even though For King & Country gave Harmonica the biggest hit of its BJSC career ('Joy', #4 at BJSC 108 in 2018), they had never been on our radar to send a second time, until just this past confirmation week when we still really had no other strong entries to send. We can thank our favorite country of Desbuanda for bringing this song to our attention - their impact on BJSC continues!
Might as well update and re-post this paragraph from last month. This is the ninth artist recycle in Harmonica history and a gap of 35 contests between their first and second entry. That's the fourth-longest in Harmonican history, longer than Joseph (89 & 118), Black Atlass (117 & 136), Sizzy Rocket (65 & 83), Ary (93 & 104), and Overcoats (126 & 129), but shorter than The Rocket Summer (68 & 142), Jocelyn Alice (77 & 139), and Holychild (73 & 110). Harmonica's population is small at only 638, so we can blame that for all of the recent recycles

Yesss, Teddy Swims came through! Not only was this our best result since Moyka 'Stay' in 138, but it actually breaks our long-running anniversary curse. Believe it or not, our 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th and 70th BJSC entries all DNQ'd, so this is our first anniversary entry to qualify since our 10th, Holychild 'Running Behind' all the way back in 2015! Top 7 in the semifinal is pretty rad too. Thanks to the above countries for your points!

Yes, it was us masquerading as Summericia! We took this opportunity to send a long-time potential, but considering it hasn't been good enough to send to the main contest in the past 4-5 years, that doesn't exactly bode well for it in a spinoff either. It was just an excuse to share a song I really, really like. Still a shame to finish close to last place, but I did make sure to dive into other Summerician artists during confirmations, so as to not let the rest of their exciting catalog go to waste.
Meanwhile, Jupiterdonia (I think?? can't remember) masqueraded as Harmonica and made the very inspired choice of Ben Hazlewood, with the insanely beautiful 'Paint Me Black'. Despite trying not to give our top points to ourselves, it simply had to happen this time.

All of Harmonica's entries so far this year have been male artists, not intentional by any means but it's served us well with 4 out of 5 qualifying. This one's incredibly instant, especially that brass in the chorus *.*, which we thought would bode well for it to easily qualify, but it was a very strong semifinal, too strong for this entry. (We do have a female-led group lined up for the next contest!)

How exciting to introduce them to a mostly new batch of countries ("new" meaning "nonexistent in 2012"). Can her beautiful Mazzy Star-esque vocals entice enough of them to vote it into the final?

Quite likely our most unexpected result of the year! This relatively unassuming song WON THE SEMI, which means Kaneholler 'Paper Games' is no longer our biggest semifinal success - that one was 2nd in the semi but only 21st in the final. 'Black Lagoon' also has a regression but not nearly as bad, holding on to 8th place to become Harmonica's first top 10 since Moyka - Stay last year, and our 5th top 10 overall! Unfortunately not a new position, as we already reached 8th with Meg Mac - Never Be, so we've still only claimed 4/10 top 10 positions. But it's hard to complain when all expectations were outrageously exceeded. (Honestly it means so much that y'all could hear what I hear in this song, so thank you (that said it would've meant even more to get at least one 18 xx))

Yes, we're still recycling artists over here! Turnstile previously DNQd for Cowtermont in 124 and finished 23rd for Utopia five contests ago. It's time to give this band a more respectable BJSC peak, but it might be a challenge with this entry being really short! In fact it's our shortest entry to date, clocking in at 2:35 and beating our previous shortest Black Atlass - Do For Love by 4 seconds. That, as well as our second (now third-) shortest, Ary - Already There, were both very unjust DNQs, but hopefully this one can break the curse!
This is a really great entry! It reminds me of Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing in parts.

It's a riskier entry than we were hoping for with a Q streak to defend, but go big or go home! 'Wretched' made a big first impression here and keeps growing with each listen, so hopefully it does the same for you. Such a great blend of genres that it's hard to decide what to call it! We seem to be in a pop-heavy semi but fingers crossed the chorus made a big enough impact on the voters.

When the contest opened, all of our potentials were a bit on the cheap side, which was good for keeping our Q streak intact but none of them really sounded like something we'd send at any other time. I just happened to discover Marc Scibilia that weekend as he was opening for Mat Kearney, and 'Over You' was the very first song in his set. It sounded SO GOOD and suddenly this seemed like it'd be a much more special entry, especially with this being the 150th BJSC contest! Alas, it only got points from three countries and therefore ruined our Q streak, but no regrets sending it at all. Pretty sure we still had a record year with 7/10 finalists (I don't keep track of these things) and we're proud to have all 10 of these in our entry history.
Stay tuned for the reveal of our top 50 entries in 2022!

It was FSR Rontvia's year, with four entries in our top 50 - that's not the record though, Bhangra had five back in 2018! Altyr Muunilinst, Summericia, and D'yermak'er are close behind with three entries each. It sure seems like we didn't spread our points around very much this year. As for artists, Moyka has appeared with all of her entries, aside from the one that we sent, of course. Here's a Spotify playlist with every song we voted for last year, so even if none of yours made the top 50, you might still be on the playlist!
2 appearances :maloney: defo was worth finally sending Daughters Of Reykjavík after keeping them as a potential for years just for this moment tbh and hooray for Hazel squeaking in too.
Most of your top 10 doesn't cross over that much with my taste unsurprisingly buuuut your #1 is excellent and was an 18 for me! Also love to see 'Happy New Year', 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 51', 'High Hopes', 'Love You (When You're A Mess)', 'Strictly Business', '50/50' and 'The Ocean Sings To Me In Turquoise Waves' here too.

When you stay true to sending songs that you truly love, sometimes that means a song from 2005 that you forgot existed until a month ago, but have listened to it more times in that month than you did in the previous 18 years, even though it sounds completely dated now in 2023. We have no Q streak to defend, so why not? Well, it was literally only a worthy discovery for one country who gave it one point (the other 12 came from Cor Lupus who was already a fan). But honestly, no regrets! It's everyone else's loss.

We seem to be stuck in the mid-to-late 2000s around here! This was another re-discovery late last year, obviously it's a jazz song but it has such a country vibe IMO. Wilder Woods is the solo stage name of Bear Rinehart, lead singer of NeedToBreathe, a band I've loved since 2008 and sent to Nuggets several years ago. I came across this song on its release day, which was also the day confirmations opened, and by the end of the first chorus I wanted to send it to BJSC! 'Patience' is relatable to Harmonicans as we are one of the most patient nations in all of BJSC, still waiting for our first top-3 hit in a main contest. We manifest a top 3 hit for every entry, but people forget to vote for it, and this month was no exception.

Here it is, our 90th BJSC entry! It's been several years since we sent a country song, so what better time than now? Fun fact, our 80th entry was called "Loveless" and now our 90th is called "Lawless". Also fun fact, not one, not two, not three, but FOUR Harmonican artists have been recycled this month! And they all ended up in the other semi, but still, must be in honor of our anniversary!
Unfortunately, it was a fifth DNQ in a row, but 24th is our best (or "least bad") result of those five...so maybe we're on the rebound?

We did it! Yes, the bar was low, but we broke our 6-contest DNQ streak, made a final for the first time this year, and avoided last place - by just two points! (Just now noticing the last-place team, host St. Burbia, gave us two points, some genuine foot-shooting there otherwise we would've tied for last with them, although I think we'd have won the tiebreaker anyway.) Thanks to all 13 countries who pointed 'Scenario'! Finally we have some momentum back and hope to carry it to 157, which leads us to our next entry...

We love recycling our own artists here in Harmonica. It wouldn't feel right to not send them again if they release a song worth sending - in fact the opposite is true, our priority is artists we've sent before. This appears to be our 10th self-recycle in Harmonican history, this time courtesy of Bartees Strange! 'Daily News' had actually been our top potential for most of the year, but we strategically waited for our DNQ streak to end before sending it. It's our rockiest entry since The Rocket Summer - 'Same Air' last year, and it always feels good to be back in the rock realm. Unfortunately the semi draw was not favorable to that, and the Q streak ends before it could even begin, as does our upward trajectory for the year.

Wow! I can report that Harmonica is very happy with 20th for an entry we sat on for over a year. Turns out our gut instinct about this song was right all along. It's our first top 20 since 9 contests ago, which coincidentally we also finished 20th place and continues our upward trajectory of results this year - we've had our best result of the year in 6 of the last 8 contests! After Sofia Carson's success, Harmonica has committed to a pop phase! *.* There's a handful of songs we've set aside but possibly underestimated - in other words, loving them too much to see them flop, but maybe they'll actually do as well as they deserve? This one has Ariana-esque vocals, sax, and a key change! It made the Radio 2 playlist but stalled on the C-list. And in case you forgot, Leadley has been sent once before and DNQd, this sounds like the perfect song to claim her redemption! That was five years ago now, when we celebrated our fifth year in BJSC with our first top 5. Now we celebrate our tenth year in BJSC with a first win!
It makes sense, doesn't it, with MisterWives having that pop-rock crossover appeal. And yet, the song was almost completely overlooked in the odds, but suddenly becoming a dark-horse contender when the first scoreboard was finally revealed halfway through the results. As easy as it is to complain, being an underdog nation has its upsides and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Well, all of a sudden, this turns what would've been one of Harmonica's most uneventful years, to a year that we completed a brilliant upwards trajectory. Our first five entries were DNQs, with a semifinal run of 29-26-31-24-21. Our first qualifier of the year finished second-to-last in 41st. We DNQd again (23rd), then our last three had a finals run of 20-25-1! Many thanks to all who voted and cheered us on tonight
Coincidentally, January should be the perfect month for Harmonica to host. But first, stay tuned for our annual BJSC EOY...probably not for another few weeks though!
HARMONICA'S FAVORITE ENTRIES OF 2023
1. Ultraviolenceland - Idina Menzel "Funny Kind Of Lonely"
2. Kathaldazia - Geo22 "Magic"
3. Ojnoj - Chappell Roan "Naked In Manhattan"

8. Bronzil - Acraze & Aviella "In A Dream"
9. New Lexico - Chrissy Chlapecka "Brat"
10. D'yermak'er - Gracie Abrams "I Know It Won't Work"
If you had told me in January that an Idina Menzel song would be my favorite BJSC discovery of the year, there's no way I'd have believed you! Her previous entry didn't even make an impression on me, but leave it to UVLand to dig through her whole album and find a masterpiece. Shout out to Wholune for making my BJSC EOY four years in a row - still can't believe I never thought to send Lacey Sturm! And 'I Know It Won't Work' was by far the biggest post-contest grower of the year for me
Stay tuned for the rest of the top 50!

This was probably the toughest year yet to put this in order. I hope at least one of your entries is here, but even if not, chances are I enjoyed at least a couple of them! Every song I vote for goes into a Spotify playlist which ensures I will revisit it for years to come!

We have been very, very close to sending this on numerous occasions in the past year, but it's definitely not an obvious hit and it wouldn't have felt right to DNQ with such a personal fave. So as soon as we claimed victory in December, this re-emerged as the front-runner for our AQ (thanks Bray for pointing out the unexpected irony of the song title), and honestly nothing else was even considered. Looking forward to finding out what everyone thinks of it! It also feels great to have this represent our 10th year in BJSC, with our 100th entry just a few months away.

We took advantage of our first ever AQ by sending a relatively risky entry, and would say that a midtable finish was a success! It was definitely hit-or-miss, with over half of our points coming from five countries. Certainly a better start to the year than we have most years. As for our hosting, sorry again about not getting the resort constructed in time, not having enough food delivered, and stuff like that. Seriously, that was our bad. But the music was great and thanks again to everyone who took part!

Discovered: December 2023, but can't remember where (possibly SiriusXM)
We're back to a bit of desperation for finding entries, scrolling through saved songs on Shazam to listen to them in full. Perhaps not the worst thing in the world, because hearing this one in full was amazing! Sounded a bit like Phoebe Bridgers or Boygenius without the obnoxious critic hype. Didn't seem particularly safe, but it appears to be through to the final, and may have even done so with ease, with all but one prediction to qualify!

Eek! 118 points is only 20 fewer than last month, but a whole 15 places lower on the leaderboard. But we also got points from one more country than last month, despite finishing 15 places lower. All in all, just happy to have a Q streak of 5 for the first time in quite a while, and a song that should hopefully rank reasonably high in our fave entries we've ever sent. Speaking of which, we have 98 of those now, excited for #99 to be revealed tomorrow!

This has always been my favorite album track on Foster The People's best-known album. As such, it's always seemed like an overlooked gem, a song that more people would surely appreciate if they heard it. Well, in anticipation of our 100th anniversary entry, which should be revealed in just a few short weeks, Harmonica is sending an almost-equally-special song for its 99th entry! (Also we seemed overdue for a male artist after sending females for the past 5 contests )

Well, this wasn't the best result to be honest, it felt like this would be worthy of much better than 30th. But that's the risk with sending an all-time fave, there's no guarantee that others will feel the same! But that's not to dismiss the 17 countries who pointed our entry, 10 of which were double-digit points! Guess this was an all-or-nothing kind of entry. And thanks to Sovarasma for hosting again. We're off to Republique d'Askorza, hopefully just hours from revealing Harmonica's 100th anniversary entry! So excited I might even try to update this thread more promptly

Happy 100th Harmonicaversary! After not sending a proper anniversary entry for our 50th, this has been the frontrunner for the 100th anniversary entry for most, if not all, of the past 5 years. It sadly passed most people by at the time, but hopefully some potential fans have the chance to discover it now.
Would love to do a comprehensive 100-contest recap of Harmonican history, but it'll depend if I have any time to type it up. Either way, we have a six-contest Q streak and would love to make it seven!
Here's my attempt at celebrating 100 contests! A year-by-year recap of my own entries, favorite entries from others, and some commentary. Just re-living and reflecting on some of my fondest memories from each year

Tartford - Maria Hazell "Say It Like You Mean It"
Jamvale - MOYA "Earthbound"
Palmyra - Wallis Bird "Hardly Hardly"
Persephonia - Eagles For Hands "Glass Heart"
Basically this first year was just throwing anything at the wall to see what would stick...but in this case nothing stuck. I started out with recent discoveries, but since those seemed to underwhelm everyone, I switched to songs I'd known and loved for years and would consider all-time faves, thinking those would do better, but alas they still DNQd! The only good luck came in that first contest, BJSC 64, which ended up a One Big Final when one of the co-hosts disappeared and no one had access to the semi results. I ended up 35th there, but seem to recall the semi results were eventually revealed and I wouldn't have qualified, so my only taste of success that year was basically on accident.
Some will know I tried to send "Shut Up And Dance" but was beaten to it, oops! "Hardly Hardly" grew so much over the years that I sent it in a spinoff, it's so outrageously fun *.* "The All Time High" and "Deep" have also become all-time faves and have led me to loving a couple more songs from both artists

Pupok - Marina Kaye "Dancing With The Devil"
Sandeborg - Lisa Ajax "Blue Eyed Girl"
Kluminican Republic - BORNS "Electric Love"
Jukianie - Raye "Bet U Wish"
I still remember Youtube recommending "A Rush Of Blood" when I was watching a Walk The Moon video, it sounded like my first hit and that's what it became! There was a specific radio station I started listening to online, I forget the name and it no longer exists, but it was responsible for four of my entries that year, including Holychild and Phases. I sent two Morgan Page feat. Lissie songs to BJSC and a spin-off simultaneously, and "Avalanche" is usually my #1 fave when I post in the "Rank your entries" thread. "Wanted" was responsible for one of my favorite spinoff entries ever, as someone sent Ben Hazlewood's incredible "Paint Me Black" to Masquerade
If I don't get around to compiling my favorite discoveries of all time, just know that "Shade Of You" is probably #1. Daniella Mason is my favorite artist discovery too, I've listened to probably her entire discography and will be mentioning her again later. This was the start of the plug.dj era so a lot of these songs have fond memories attached from that. Eves The Behavior was actually an artist I sent to Unknown Pleasures a year before she appeared in BJSC. "Obvious" was another song I tried to send but was beaten to it. And "Bet U Wish" is probably still my favorite Raye song ever, it's stunning!

Doop "Tequila" - DNQ
Lipstick Gypsy "The Cure" - DNQ
Sizzy Rocket "Need Somebody" - DNQ
Sleigh Bells "A/B Machines" - 29th
Megan McCauley "Die For You" - DNQ
Meg Mac "Never Be" - 8th
Parri$ "Nasty" - 37th
Joseph "White Flag" - 18th
Lauren Alaina "Road Less Traveled" - 9th
You'll notice there's only 9 entries on this list, that's because I forgot to enter BJSC 86! Coincidentally, I also forgot to remind Noahspike to confirm so our sister country Desbuanda didn't participate either. This was also the same contest as Blush-gate, which delayed the semifinals by at least a day, but we weren't invited to confirm late and tbh I may not have asked, it was just too busy of a month. Instead we had our own Desbuonica contest with each of our faves and a few new entries - "Turn And Turn Again" being the rightful winner. It also worked out because I went from mostly DNQing to finally my first ever top 10...with another one just three months later! "Road Less Traveled" was notable for getting five 18s in the first 10 votes and leading by 49 at one point. "A/B Machines" was especially iconic, "Tequila" was a major bust, and "Need Somebody" was the most unjust DNQ.
Top 10 Faves:
1. Tinnmark - Carl Louis feat. Ary "Telescope"
2. Beaverdonia - Bang La Decks "Aide"
3. FARC - MUNA "Winterbreak"
4. Unovia - Ali Barter "Far Away"
5. Seyetana - Arion feat. Elize Ryd "At The Break Of Dawn"
6. FARC - Jones "Hoops"
7. N DNTN - Nadia Tehran "Cash Flow"
8. Mulgracia - Cobi "Don't You Cry For Me"
9. Altyr Muunilinst - Willa "Hey"
10. FSR Rontvia - KOLAJ "The Touch"
Honorable Mentions:
Ultraviolenceland - Lauren Aquilina "How Would You Like It?"
Cadelicia - Mendoza "Love Druggie (Jade Blue Remix)"
St. Burbia - Jorja Smith "Blue Lights"
Republic Of Adonia - Anna Of The North "The Dreamer"
The Actual Republic Of Bellamia - Catey Shaw "The Ransom (Tommy Walker Remix)"
Daehun - I.O.I. "Very Very Very"
Desbuanda - Sofi Tukker "Matadora"
Summericia - Genevieve "Show Your Colors (PLS&TY Remix)"
The Carl Louis feat. Ary entry is what led me to have Ary represent Harmonica not once, but twice! We love our Norwegian females, in fact "The Dreamer" was a Harmonica potential but Math beat me to it. Genevieve was a big fave and it was a shame she barely released any music. The Jones entry was somehow even better than the first, so underrated, and obviously Muna and Jorja Smith had a bright future ahead of them!

Entries:
Tall Heights "Spirit Cold" - 29th
Kaneholler "Paper Games" - 21st
Ary "Higher" - 33rd
Northeast Party House "For You" - DNQ
Jillian Jacqueline "Reasons" - DNQ
Moment "All This Time" - DNQ
Kari Kimmel "Can You Feel It" - DNQ
Blondage "Dive" - 42nd
Hollyn "Alone" - 13th
Daniella Mason "Cover The Earth" - DNQ
I ended up with a 7-contest Q streak, which I think is still my record! Also my 3rd year in a row with exactly 5 entries that qualified. A couple of these were pleasant surprises, especially "Spirit Cold" (a folk ballad!) and "Paper Games" which was my first time finishing 2nd in a semifinal! Three of these are artists I discovered from BJSC: Ary, Moment, and Daniella Mason. The latter was picked specifically for BJSC 100 as she's still my favorite artist discovery, I didn't mind at all that it didn't do that well. "All This Time" became my most unjust DNQ to date, but it'll be dethroned the following year.
Top 10 Faves:
1. Kluminican Republic - RUFUS "Innerbloom"
2. South Danaelanda - Gareth Emery & Standerwick feat. Hailene "Saving Light"
3. Ultraviolenceland - Hannah Jane Lewis "Raincheck"
4. Ultraviolenceland - Jaded "In The Morning"
5. Oslol - Moment "Indigo"
6. Desbuanda - Paper Route "Chariots"
7. Medhelnia - Misterwives "Machine"
8. FARC - Robinson "Don't You Forget About Me"
9. Republique d'Ashton - Dragonette "Darth Vader"
10. Ojnoj - SAARA "Superpowers"
Honorable Mentions:
St. Burbia - Alice Merton "No Roots"
Tinnmark - Emilie Nicolas "Sky"
Republique d'Ashton - Mutya Keisha Siobhan "I'm Alright"
Desbuanda - DJDS feat. Amber Mark & Marco McKinnis "Trees On Fire"
Medhelnia - Clare Maguire "Elizabeth Taylor (Mulholland Edition)"
Trifoski - Drones Club "Hurricane"
Moment and Robinson were my favorite artist discoveries of 2017, perhaps unsurprisingly as I've sent songs from both of them. Emilie Nicolas I already loved from Unknown Pleasures, but loved her even more after this entry. "No Roots" crossing over to almost be a proper hit was amazing to see! "Superpowers" was quite the conversation topic for both Harmonica and Desbuanda - Noahspike and I both loved it! Wonder if Misterwives' appearance here will foreshadow anything.

Entries:
Joshua Micah "Who Says?" - 34th
Malory "Rapture" - DNQ
Marc E. Bassy feat. Kyle "Plot Twist" - DNQ
Ary "Already There" - DNQ
Dinovski feat. Caitlyn Scarlett "Island Of Sin" - DNQ
Ocean Park Standoff feat. Lil Yachty "If You Were Mine" - 33rd
The Aces "Put It On The Line" - 18th
For King & Country "Joy." - 4th
American Authors "Deep Water" - 28th
Holychild "Wishing You Away" - 13th
My Christian music phase carried into 2018, with the brilliant "Who Says?" giving me three consecutive entries from that genre. I'd come back to it later in the year with two more, including "Joy." which was finally, in my 5th year of participating, my first top 5! It was also a year of forgiveness, as I sent three artists who were responsible for two of my least favorite songs of the 2010s (Kyle and Lil Yachty for "iSpy" and American Authors for "Best Day Of My Life"). The Aces were one of my favorite discoveries of the year, I listened to their album specifically hoping for a song with wide enough appeal for BJSC, and I think I chose the right one! I actually discovered them from a Zambian radio station, which I started listening to online earlier in the year. "Joy." and "Deep Water" were also discoveries from that station. And, I guess I can't avoid commenting on "Already There", one of my proudest entries to date, the first time I ever felt like a contender to win, only to not qualify at all. I still hope justice for it will be served one day.
Top 10 Faves:
1. FSR Rontvia - Freya Ridings "Lost Without You (Live)"
2. Aeroche - Camden Cox "Gold"
3. South Danaelanda - BUNT. feat. Leah Haywood "On My Way"
4. Niceland - Hooverphonic "Romantic"
5. Taahino - June Divided "Time Will Stop"
6. FARC - Alex Mills "Stayed Too Long"
7. Oslol - Gryffin & Zohara "Remember"
8. Vulkyria - Amy Miyu & Rochelle "All Good"
9. Tartford - Maria Nayler "Naked And Sacred"
10. Beaverdonia - Metric "Now Or Never Now"
Honorable Mentions:
Cadelicia - Simmy "Ngiyesaba"
FARC - Miriam Bryant "Black Car"
Utopia - Metric "Dressed To Suppress"
Taahino - Litany "Bedroom"
Desbuanda - Elley Duhé "Fly"
Desbuanda - Middle Kids "Mistake"
There's still something special about that live version of "Lost Without You" that isn't captured in the recorded version. Nevertheless, still amazing to see it become a chart hit! "Remember" is an absolute monster of a song. Elley Duhé was another top discovery in 2018, I've loved everything else I've heard from her too. And those back-to-back great entries by Metric, a proud moment for them to get their flowers in BJSC! (Still waiting for "Doomscroller" to get its turn too x)

Entries:
Holy Ghost! "Dance A Little Closer" - 35th
G Flip "Killing My Time" - 26th
Avalanche City "Prayed For Love" - 37th
Sally "Calculated" - DNQ
Flight Facilities & Dustin Tebbutt "All Your Love" - DNQ
Benee "Want Me Back" - DNQ
Black Atlass "If They Only Knew" - DNQ
Joseph "Fighter" - DNQ
Sophie And The Giants "Space Girl" - DNQ
Voice Of The Beehive "Scary Kisses" - 20th
This was not a banner year, with only four qualifiers and my best result being 20th! I mostly had a New Zealand phase with four of my entries coming from there. I will take credit for sending Benee and Sophie And The Giants to BJSC before they were popular, I can't help that I'm ahead of the curve. I didn't send a special artist for my 50th entry, which, based on the song I sent instead, you could say was poorly "Calculated". In addition, I thought Flight Facilities would do as well as all the RUFUS/RUFUS DU SOL entries (not even close), and Black Atlass would smash because he sounded like The Weekend (also nope). The year ended on a good note when I finally thought to send "Scary Kisses", a song I'd been obsessed with for several years. It was a relief to finally feel like I wasn't the only fan of my entry!
Top 10 Faves:
1. Vulkyria - Xenomania pts. Paige Cavell "Predators & Monsters"
2. Altyr Muunilinst - SOAK "Maybe"
3. Florina - Moyka "Colder"
4. Botanikka - Tamia "Stranger In My House (Thunderpuss Club Mix)"
5. Ojnoj - Ben Platt "RAIN"
6. Scherzland - Kah-lo "Exit Sign"
7. Trifoski - Marianas Trench Ft. Roger Joseph Manning Jr. "Echoes of You"
8. Thelonia - Openside "Character Flaws"
9. New Lexico - chloe mk "To Be Young"
10. Skall - Nadia Rose "Skwod"
Honorable Mentions:
Kluminican Republic - KSHMR, B3nte and Badjack "The Spook Returns"
Republique d'Askorza - Mutya Keisha Siobhan "Only You"
FSR Rontvia - Spinifex Gum with Marliya Choir "Sisters"
Persephonia - Baiuca feat. Aliboria "Olvídame"
Republique d'Askorza - Elley Duhé "Fever"
Moyka! As if I didn't already love too many Norwegian acts, she was instantly my new fave. Meanwhile Elley, although not Norwegian, climbed further in my affections with "Fever", and the MKS entries continued to impress because of course they did. I'm happy with how diverse my list of faves was in 2019!

Entries:
Robinson "Don't Say" - 26th
Burcu Gunes "Ufo" - DNQ
Leland & Vincint "Middle Of Love" - DNQ
Selah Sue "Always Home (Sorry Remix)" - DNQ
Overcoats "Fire & Fury" - 26th
Bailen "I Was Wrong" - DNQ
Georgia Lines "Same Things" - 25th
Le Youth "Swimming" - 21st
Overcoats "The Fool" - 41st
TKA "Maria" - DNQ
You can tell Overcoats were the big discovery this year. "The Fool" was the one I heard first but "Fire & Fury" was so relatable in the tumultuous year that was 2020; looking back I'm equally proud of both entries. It was also a pleasure to send two other faves in Robinson and Selah Sue. "Ufo" was by far the most robbed DNQ of the year, my first foreign-language entry and you couldn't ask for a catchier song. Hoping one day I'll have an opportunity to reintroduce it to y'all! Overall, one of my least successful years with 21st being my best result.
Top 10 Faves:
1. New Lexico - Moyka "Spaces"

8. New Lexico - Kyan Palmer & nicopop. feat. Yuri Joness "Antisocial Socialites"
9. POPHub - Peg Parnevik "Break Up A Bit"
10. Greenfroze - Little Green Cars "My Love Took Me Down To The River To Silence Me"
Honorable Mentions:
Hendinia - Smith & Thell "Goliath"
Fljotavik - De Grandi "Paris Nord-Est"
Hendinia - PRIZM "Can't Bring Me Down"
Oslol - Colton Dixon "Miracles"
Varakë - HAYES & Wiktoria feat. Famous Dex "F*** This Place Up"
United States of Jack - Grace Davies "Just A Girl"
I actually tried to send "Spaces" but was beaten to the punch; instead it was without question my favorite non-Harmonican entry. "4:15" has matched it in my affections by now though! So proud to be part of the silent pop bloc that got it to second place in its contest; we will always be silenced but never dismissed! The Little Green Cars entry has continued to grow as well, definitely in all-time fave territory now.

Entries:
Jennifer Denali "Sweet Sounds" - 32nd
Lily Rose "Villain" - DNQ
Remi Wolf & Dominic Fike "Photo ID" - DNQ
Robyn Sherwell "To Give Up" - DNQ
Caveboy "Obsessed" - 34th
Black Atlass "Do For Love" - DNQ
Neon Dreams feat. Kardinal Offishall "Marching Bands" - DNQ
Moyka "Stay" - 6th
Jocelyn Alice "Still Wondering" - 28th
Ladyhawke "Mixed Emotions" - 35th
Mediocre results continued well into this year, with my top 20 drought lasting 17 contests. "Sweet Sounds" and "Obsessed" felt like genuine successes compared to everything around them. "Photo ID" was clearly robbed, and "Do For Love" a second criminally-overlooked entry from Black Atlass. I actually sent four Canadian entries this year, never thought Jocelyn Alice would perform the best of them but so glad she did! Of course, Moyka is the highlight of this batch - so pleased she had a chance to represent Harmonica and that "Stay" performed as well as her other entries!
Top 10 Faves:
1. Wholune - Greta Van Fleet "Heat Above"
2. St. Burbia - Beren Olivia "Read My Mind"
3. Aquafina - Zara Larsson "Funeral"
4. New Lexico - Emmi "Drum"
5. Zanmatony - Mint Royale feat. Lauren Laverne "Don't Falter"
6. Numayania - Captain Jack "Dream A Dream"
7. Aeroche - Deekline "Be Happy"
8. Jupiterdonia - Soccer Mommy "Rom Com 2004"
9. Hendinia - Ayesha Erotica "Literal Legend"
10. FSR Rontvia - Alba August "Lights"
Honorable Mentions:
Tartford - Middle Kids "Stacking Chairs"
Oslol - Boys World "Something In The Water"
Kylienips - Fletcher "Healing"
Holland-Oats - Kinder "Bus Stop"
This was another year for diverse faves, including one entry each from the 90s, 00s and 10s. Shocked that I would like "Literal Legend" this much but it's too catchy to resist. Middle Kids have been another brilliant discovery from BJSC, don't be surprised if I send a song of theirs in the next 100 contests.
2022
Entries:
Michigander "Better" - DNQ
The Rocket Summer "Same Air" - 36th
For King & Country "Relate" - 39th
TELYKast & Teddy Swims "Loveless" - 26th
Bob Moses "Love Brand New" - 30th
Ripe "Settling" - DNQ
Still Corners "Black Lagoon" - 8th
Turnstile "Mystery" - 28th
Bartees Strange "Wretched" - 20th
Marc Scibilia "Over You" - DNQ
This may look like a bad year at first, but I only had three DNQs, compared to my usual five! The Rocket Summer finally redeemed their DNQ from my very first year, and For King & Country got to follow up their previous entry, still my biggest hit to date. I was excited to send both Teddy Swims and Bartees Strange as I've become a fan of both. A very alternative year as I discovered most of these from alt radio stations. I still can't remember where I found "Black Lagoon", but it was saved somewhere in my Shazam library, and just scrolling through that list by chance gave me my fifth top 10 and a semifinal winner!
Top 10 Faves:
1. Aelandor - Holding Absence "Gravity"
2. Lookylion - Honey. "What Now"
3. Altyr Muunilinst - Cornelia Jakobs "Rise"
4. Kingdom of Horanius - Son Mieux "Multicolor"
5. Oslol - A$H. "I Got The Moves"
6. Dobago - Initi8 "Just Fine"
7. New Lexico - Sub-Radio "Disco"
8. Summericia - Hydrogen Child "Sirens"
9. Wholune - Nightlife "New Low"
10. Aeroche - Abroad "Coffee"
Honorable Mentions:
Hushkanukia - Moyka "Illusion"
D'yermak'er - Let's Eat Grandma "Happy New Year"
Ingermanlandia - Bizarrap & Villano Antillano "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 51"
Aesthetica - Alaska Thunderf*** "Beautiful (Night 4 A) Breakdown"
Altyr Muunilinst - ALMA "Summer Really Hurt Us"
"I Got The Moves" was actually on my potentials list for over a year, but I was never confident enough to send it, so it was great that someone else did. I have such fond memories of 2022, the quality here is extremely high.
2023
Entries:
Natalie "Goin' Crazy" - DNQ
Melody Gardot "Who Will Comfort Me" - DNQ
Wilder Woods "Patience" - DNQ
Caroline Jones "Lawless" - DNQ
Sadye "Biblical" - DNQ
Romy Wave "Scenario" - 41st
Bartees Strange "Daily News" - DNQ
Sofia Carson "It's Only Love, Nobody Dies" - 20th
Leadley "Love For The Last Time" - 25th
Misterwives "Where Do We Go From Here?" - 1st
This will always be a memorable year! I struggled to find entries at first but found inspiration again before long. Look at the trajectory: five DNQs, then breaking my DNQ streak but finishing 2nd-to-last, then another DNQ, finally two mid-table finishes, and a storybook ending with a win, surprising everyone and especially myself. Shout outs to "Biblical", the most shocking of these DNQs, and "Daily News", the most disappointing.
Top 10 Faves:
1. Ultraviolenceland - Idina Menzel "Funny Kind Of Lonely"
2. Kathaldazia - Geo22 "Magic"
3. Ojnoj - Chappell Roan "Naked In Manhattan"
4. Aelandor - Owl City "Vitamin Sea"
5. Sandenia - Lozeak "Used To You"
6. Wholune - Lacey Sturm feat. Lindsey Stirling "Breathe With Me"
7. Taahino - Renee Rapp "Bruises"
8. Bronzil - Acraze & Aviella "In A Dream"
9. New Lexico - Chrissy Chlapecka "Brat"
10. D'yermak'er - Gracie Abrams "I Know It Won't Work"
Honorable Mentions:
Zanmatony - Mykah "Alex Kidd Main Theme (Electro House Version)"
Oslol - Chappell Roan "Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl"
Thelonia - Sophie and the Giants feat. Mearsy "DNA"
Kluminican Republic - Benee "Green Honda"
Wholune - The Last Dinner Party "Nothing Matters"
Never thought I'd see Idina Menzel, Owl City and Lacey Sturm on any list together, let alone in BJSC. It was Chappell Roan's year, after loving her DNQ "Pink Pony Club" a while back, I gave her my 18 twice, and that's not even including "Red Wine Supernova" which is now in the charts!
2024
Entries:
Sheryl Crow "Am I Getting Through (Pt. I & II)" - 23rd
Sadie Jean "Locksmith" - 38th
Foster The People "Miss You" - 30th
Alessia Cara "I'm Yours" - 23rd
I'd been saving the Sheryl Crow song as a possible AQ for a long time, maybe a little too optimistic that I'd ever get an AQ but sure enough, its destiny is finally fulfilled! "Locksmith" is my only 2024 entry that's from this decade, as I returned to throwbacks/all-time faves to celebrate Harmonica's anniversary. Back to our usual mid-to-lower-half results, but at least all of these qualified!
Top 10 Faves:
1. FARC - Quarterhead & Norma Jean Martine "Throw Me Out The Club"
2. East Rukahavian - The River Indigo "Riptide"
3. St. Burbia - Zeina "Hooked"
4. Yobnedorica - Johnny Verweij "Klompendans"
5. Jupiterdonia - Hayla "Fall Again"
6. Aelandor - Mike Shinoda "Already Over"
7. Aelandor - Des Rocs "Let Me Live / Let Me Die"
8. Aeroche - SONIKKU feat. Rakky Ripper "Wonky"
9. Ben's Sanctuary - Ross Quinn "The Otherside"
10. Greenfroze - ID:Earth "Aliens"
Honorable Mentions:
POPHub - Catty "I Dated A Monster"
Bøtanikkä - Dolly Style "Mi Amor"
This is all super early and this list will change significantly by the end of the year, but for completeness' sake the above list is where things stand after my 100th contest.

Our anniversary entry definitely benefited from being in the right semifinal, with a 4th place semi result! With the same amount of points (77) we'd have missed the top 10 in the opposite semifinal. As a result it was impossible to repeat a top-5 finish in the final, but there was still plenty of love for this song which was greatly appreciated! Considering our 50th entry didn't even qualify, this was a great improvement, as we celebrated extending our Q streak yet again.
Crazy to be closing the chapter on Harmonica's first decade! What does the second decade hold? More old entries? More new entries? A hiatus? Honestly, just taking it one entry at a time for now. We are heading to Bøtanikkä for BJSC165, so stay tuned!

Discovered: Raider Radio, May 2024
Harmonica begins its next 100 contests with its first ever drum & bass entry! Also, just like our very first entry 10 years ago, it was discovered via college radio (as was 'The Cure' in 2016 and 'Plot Twist' in 2018). And I'm just now learning it was an Estonian airplay #1! With the first round of voting already done, stay tuned to see how it fared in Semi 2!
