This is the first time I've had any real hype in the predictions thread for quite a while so interested to see how this goes! Not really expecting anything crazy though, I'll be happy with top 20.
Think we're probably looking at a 7th contest in a row with a winner I haven't voted for, I need to look up if this run is a record for me
(also just realised I again forgot to send a version of my votes with commentary oops so I will compile a redux of the fun stats I would have included and post them after my votes are revealed again x)

Well that is a far better start than I had anticipated. I never actually end up doing well when the start is good but I'm happy to take the quite consistent points for now, especially as I was (and still kinda am) fully expecting DC Rot to get lost between the behemoths of FARC and Aeroche!

The first time I listened to it the spoken word section really caught me off guard, it certainly makes what would otherwise be a fairly unremarkable (although still lovely) dreampop song stand out a lot more and made me want to quickly return to it - it actually took me a couple of listens to determine if it was standing out in a good way or not but I obviously did end up falling on the love side as well so I'm glad it has gone down well with at least a few others as well <3

I think it sounds like a pretty obvious hit (techno songs often do really well and this one clearly went down well) so you should just believe in yourself more on this occasion xx

Going more or less as expected so far, thought it would land in the bottom 10 and we're very much on track to do that. Thanks very much to Danæviia for the medal position as well as to Dobago, Niceland, Bøtanikkä and Terra Avium for giving us double figures! We are also stunned by Lotunia's vote, after giving zero to every single one of our previous finalists we're very surprised and grateful to be given one point this time!

Argh at Klum Rep now looking like a contender - I'm not personally much of a fan of it at all (grew on me a bit with my late relisten as I do really like parts of the instrumental but those vocals just aren't my thing) but I can totally see the appeal and it'd be quite a standout winner so wouldn't begrudge it if it pulled it off. Plus Klum Rep obviously well overdue a winner as ever.

Well at least my foot shooting is relatively minimal as FARC was the only other contender I voted for (well I think anyway, who knows if there are others that are now contenders I hadn't realised especially with the scoreboard frozen)

The winner is an instant classic and I voted for 5 of the top 6, so very happy with that! I'm also amazed at coming top 20 when I was doubtful about qualifying at all, thanks for what felt like a lot of medal positions.

Omg! So close, well done Looky, it was in my potentials too but realistically I was never going to send it so I don’t feel it’s a missed opportunity, it’s great though.
Cor Lupus the third song I’ve tipped for the win in a row that finishes 3rd! Deserved better.
Well done to Altyr on second too, it always looked dangerous.
8th for Aeroche, gah, another 90s house ANTHEM ending up on the wrong end of the top ten.
Happy with the result overall though, I did vote for much of the top ten and nice to see a ballad top five!

Shall comment on the rest after quickly double checking the scoreboard but thank you Rob for the last few points, was not expecting any from you but I did get a few decent pop nation crossover points with this one I guess, though obviously not quite enough to be in the running for the win - hooray for looking to have held onto 6th though as I was preparing to dip back to 8th there!
Also definitely glad I kept BJSC FM on all this time as 'Arcade Summer' just came on and still sounding as fantastic as ever yay for hearing it here after it not showing up in the Jadakissnia hour the other day. (Same with 'Ageispolis' a bit earlier!)

I have no idea how I got through that - I'm so so sorry for the slow speed, but I genuinely have not been able to prep anything other than a scoreboard template and my own votes before tonight. Feel a bit disappointed that it has tarnished a really fun and thought out contest of mine but hey, you can't help life getting in the way! I hope you've had all really enjoyed this contest all the same.
I don't know WHERE 9th came from but I'm thrilled with that! And 'What Now' would probably be my 18 today, it was SUCH a grower from the semi for me, the vocals are so gorgeous and irresistible.

First of all, thanks to Rob for hosting this great round - well done! Those introduction video's are truly iconique. And of course, thanks for all who voted for Honey.! I actually tried to enter it in PJSC last month, but it was blocked there, so I was very excited I got to enter it here - and now with this result! The melancholic ABBA sound, the harmonies... I recommend everybody that loved this song, to play ABBA's Don't Shut Me Down right after it.... On repeat And of course congrats to the other medalists!

Congrats to Lookylion! I didn't vote for it, but it wasn't miles off, a strong pop song that definitely gave ABBA/good Ellie Goulding vibes, a lot of the pop songs were good this month so I'm ok with them dominating (although shame about Modern Romance flopping despite the hype as that grew to be one of my favourites of them </3). Great to see FARC, Persephonia and Klum Rep in the top 10 from my own votes, Persephonia had the biggest grower for me of the contest and I'm here for a subtle French ballad overperforming <3
Wonderful to see Sovarasma and Suedeonia do so well, both massively standout entries. Would've liked Fljo and Jadakissnia a little higher but can't complain much overall x

The old record for lowest semi-final position for a winner was N DNTN's BJSC 65 winner 'Tear The House Up' by Hervé and Zebra Katz which went from 12th to 1st (this is only definitely true up to the end of last year - I will find a solid few hours of hyper focus to get my stats caught up again one of these days - but I am fairly sure I'd have remembered if there was another winner this year that did worse than that in a semi). That's a loooong standing record casually being shattered!

Congrats Lookylion for the win. So, this should be the 2nd time Eastovka's silver medalist win the contest (after Cor Lupus' Third Party)!
Despite the semi result that looked pretty safe, I'm still glad I wasn't sending "Multicolor" in previous contests. The song really needs an extra +12 to at least avoid the NQ.

Points totals all match for me in the final scoreboard Rob posted so I won't post my whole scoreboard as well but I've just edited his final scoreboard post to add the tiebreaks which it appears he hadn't done yet! (Leaving it with no deductions as Rob indicated the other day, I guess the deadline was effectively just extended by a day). The Lotunia/East Rukahavian tiebreak was already in the right order but the other 3 I've flipped over from how Rob originally posted them, sorry to Roba, Noche and Jafet x
I wasn't a big fan of 'What Now' (are we shocked x), was actually my least favourite song out of the top 3 and in my bottom 10 of the final overall oops, but what I will say is it's great to have such an inspired song choice winning, I feared this would just be a coronation for U.S. Girls which would have made 2 winners on the trot that I think probably should have been vetoed but I think this is a song that will have been a genuine discovery to near enough everyone so it's reaffirming that such songs can still win! Lookylion joining the 2-win club, you're in good company
After being briefly back to being quite well aligned with the top 10 (bar the winner) last time, this month we're back to having a top 10 with barely anything I voted for at all - although the two that did make it in (FARC and Hendinia) were both in my top 4 so at least that's a couple of big highlights, I don't get behind FARC entries nearly as often as I feel I should so very pleased with how much I loved this one, and the Hendinia song was always good but it suddenly clicked with me a lot more on my final relisten and jumped from a pencilled in 7 points all the way to 12 (pushing it up from 10th to 9th in the process I see)! Definitely a bit on the generic side for a song receiving so many points from me but I do occasionally stan the odd generic female reggaetón banger even from people not named ROSALÍA, what can I say x
And of course the other big highlight of the top 10 being my own entry *.* 2nd top 10 of the year and my best result since Minuit Machine, hooray! Glad that I did ultimately at least come very close to living up to the last minute hype in the predictions thread, myself to blame that I missed the top 5 due to the foot shooting giving 15 to FARC. 'Hamilton' actually got the joint most votes of any song in this contest (32, equal with Cor Lupus) so I guess I was successful in appealing to a slightly wider audience than usual but not quite getting enough of the bigger points from anywhere to actually be a win contender - still very happy with 3 18s and 5 medal positions in all though, and although it wasn't actually reflected in the posted scoreboards due to unfortunate timing it's pleasing to know that I was actually briefly in the lead after 50/51 votes which is deep enough in to give me the confidence that I still have the ability to get that elusive third win one of these days with some luck. The wait goes on for now though. Hooray for another semi-final win at least - as Rob pointed out on Discord I won the semi the last time he hosted as well with 070 Shake, and that was in fact the last time I won the semi I believe (though come 2nd in the semi 4 times since then), we need Rob to host more often if he is my good luck charm like this
With so few of my votes coming top 10 that of course means there are quite a lot of songs I'd have liked to see higher here - Kathaldazia narrowly losing their top 10 streak is a shame as this was another really good entry from them, I see I was right that Thelonia and Zanmatony did very similarly to each other but quite disappointing that both of them were only in the lower top half as I would have bet on at least one being top 10 if I could get there with VII Circle (oops at Wardy actually being mega frontloaded for real in the end ), and also would definitely have predicted and wanted slightly better results for Danæviia, Aelandor, Jadakissnia and N DNTN (and perhaps also Fljótavík and Greenfroze). Pleasantly surprised at how high Skall and Suedeonia are though, a better result for Fatoumata than the one I sent from her hooray! And also decent results that are about what I would have predicted for Sovarasma and Harmonica. Bøtanikkä is a surprising last place finisher, aw at coming so close to having everything over 100 points but that one falling 10 points short oops! (also just realised St. Burbia didn't end up doing particularly well - I didn't think it really sounded like a big hit but my predictions for pop songs are often way off and some others seemed to think this might do a Claudia Valentina so interesting that didn't really pan out this time)

Depends on how you define 'dominant' but it has been 4 contests in a row now, and 6 of the 8 in the year to date, where the gap between the top 2 was at most 18 points (i.e. a single extra voter could have flipped it). Lotunia won by 36 points in BJSC 144, and Aeroche by 42 points in BJSC 141. The last indisputably 'dominant' win I guess would be Lookylion's last winner in BJSC 140 which won by 113 points.

Congrats Lookylion!! Amazing to see 'What Now' winning after being one of the last songs stuck on 0 points at the beginning, very fun to watch it gradually climb to 1st. I'm not even that much of a fan of ABBA (or songs that sound like ABBA) but that didn't stop it from being my fave this month. And I couldn't believe how close the results were all along, I wish I'd kept track of how many different songs were on top of the leaderboard. I actually at the last minute switched 'What Now' from my 15 to my 18, otherwise it would've had 3 fewer points and we'd have had a tie at the top
Yay for my 15 (Kingdom of Horanius) staying top 15 and getting so many 18s, deserved. Actually most of my faves did great, except Botanikka shouldn't have been last, and I would've liked to see TARO Bellamia top 30 at least.
I'm happy with 28th even though that's around where most of my finalists seem to end up, and not quite beating Turnstile's previous entry which got to 23rd. Still not bad for a heavy rock song that has less than 1:30 of vocals. Thanks for the handful of medal positions, especially Wholune for the 18!
Wish I could've followed this live but it turned out to be a busy afternoon at work. Thanks Rob for hosting, honestly your lack of prep didn't make it any less enjoyable!

Mad semi result for Lookylion. The wrong semi effect can be so crazy, I do wonder how many potentially huge top 5/10s we’ve lost as DNQs. Such a shame sometimes our intended audience/likely fans never actually get to hear our entry (for those who don’t listen to the opposite semi DNQs).
Not that mine was ever going to do much this month but the moment I saw that semi lineup I knew it was game over for the dance entries, or most of them at least.

Well done to Lookylion!! I didn’t vote for it because I just felt it sounded like an ABBA copycat rather than something that stood on its own two feet but I’m certainly not surprised at the win!

That's a good winner and one I'm glad won out among all those contenders, I'm happy to have been proven right that this would be a close one And that wrong semi effect, very wild! Interesting to explore how many big hits have been potentially lost from the semis - this is why a DNQ is never a total failure, if you promote it hard enough to those in the other semi you think it should be aimed at (e.g. even with coming last this contest I don't really feel like I came last as I am aware of people who named it a semi 1 highlight who couldn't vote for it x).
would have liked to see Áskorza higher as it was the clear winner of the contest for me but it got a rather decent position in the end. Also very nice to see Persephonia dark horsing it as I predicted, this one slightly less blinded by loving it

A song going from 16th to 1st in particular really raises the hypothetical of if there could have even been DNQs before that would have won if they made the final - 16th would have been a DNQ under the rules of BJSC 72 which actually had one more entry than the current contest...! (I'd say it's unlikely but still surprisingly plausible).

I'm just not much of an ABBA fan sorry (apart from 'Lay All Your Love On Me', that song is excellent, they have a few others I like as well but I am pretty neutral on most of their discography and I was neutral on 'What Now' too).
Dw I'm not, I had a skim through parts of that song and I don't think even I'll be voting for it lol, maybe if it was an instrumental but the vocals sounded a bit much.
And ah right at that, fair then, I guess people just being on the same wavelength - you were the only person to send it here.

It's certainly plausible. All it would have taken this time were for me (or anyone else who didn't vote for it) and one of the people who gave it 10 to be drawn in the opposite semis, then there would have been a decent chance that Honey. wouldn't have even qualified.

Didn’t Dusky DNQ in its original contest before the Q threshold was raised to 20? Not sure about winning but I think it might have come close

I once thought about three semis but realised there might be even more chance a dance/rock etc song might just end up lumbered with pop voters or a pop song might end up in an otherwise dance/rock semi etc, if it’s kept random. The smaller the number, the more you’d have to probably take away the random element of the draw.
Overall, two semis isn’t perfect but works pretty well I’d say. I doubt we lose that many ‘would have been huge if in the other semi’ type songs. Maybe not even one a month for the most part as we hardly end up with that many really shocking DNQs these days.

For sure, as much as One Big Final was a fun trial for the fact you know the entire intended audience will hear your song, plus arguably it might encourage riskier entries from more people, 60+ tracks would be a bit much to get through these days and you also don't get the Q or DNQ streaks/semi results drama/redemption arcs etc.

1BF I don’t think is particularly feasible with these numbers. Although I do remember the „we have to listen to how many tracks?!“ when we first did it and had numbers in the 40s. Personally I think that the kinda low 40s place we’ve got to for the number of finalists is a really good place and I’m very much in the camp of keep the semis for as long as we have enough of you wonderful people to justify them.
I’m not opposed to the idea of pots. My concern is maybe that if we start pigeonholing countries is Two fold. Firstly it’s to what level do we go down to because pop for example covers so many sins, and secondly it’s do we then kinda start to subconsciously stifle people’s experimentation by sticking them with a label that might not fully encapsulate what their taste is and their palate of potential genres. I am open minded to it, but it’s one of those things I am not going to like push push on a Host to carry out an experiment or push for us to do it. If a host however is really interested in running it themselves then they would have my full backing.

Yeah I guess here you would either draw people in a genre pot, or you actively keep them away from people that tend to usually vote each other highly. Either way, that means generally pop people who want to send something else one month may be dissuaded from doing so, or they might find the right potential audience for their usual type of entry isn't with them at all and they DNQ time and time again.
The majority of my entries over the last few years have been dance, but I've had a few pop, chill out, schlager, and stuff leaning into alt/rock territory. Would I be put in a dance pot though, for example? Because clearly then I'd have little room for experimentation
There might be a way for it to work, but it would take some real strategic thinking and probably quite large pots.

I get the experimentation line completely, I wouldn't want to discourage that, though the ideal should be that regardless of what you choose to send, you should end up with approximately half of the people who would normally vote for that style of entry. Even if you yourself were put in the dance pot, you'd end up in a semi with about 10 people who've historically voted for pop most often, 10 people with the same for dance and 10 indie/rock people. With of course individual variations (I think there are slightly more pop participants and slightly less indie in general, for those you'd just put some of the more indie-leaning pop people in the indie pot).
I think even that, even just 3 pots would be enough to prevent semis killing off any potential big hit that just happens to get stuck with none of its fans.
Actually, in that scenario, I think it might even be the case that you'd get other benefits, I wouldn't fall into the trap of sending a pop song for once only to get stuck in the non-pop semi where everyone who'd normally vote for me is turned off, and I know that if I sent an experimental song that I normally rely on at least a few of (to pick from my standard list of good bets)... Trifoski, Aelandor, Persephonia, Jadakissnia etc etc, I'd probably have at least a few so I stand a chance.
On the flipside, you might get less shock qualifiers that semis sometimes happen when a niche entry lucks out. It is making it less of a natural process, but what you're effectively doing is ending horribly biased semis which randomness occasionally throws up.

Tbh I'm kind of of the opinion that the potential for the wrong semi effect is more of a feature than a bug. Any attempt to put a finger on the scales to prevent it has too much potential to have unintended consequences and not be worth the effort imo. Completely randomising the semis seems fair, you have just as good a chance of getting an abnormally good semi draw for a certain niche song than an abnormally bad one.
