Fully expecting bottom 10 but hoping to avoid it. A top 30 finish with a position I haven't landed in before would be good!

I forgot to do full odds but I won’t bother as they would have been quite similar to Leww’s save for a few countries.

But I’m definitely here for an open and unpredictable final! I’d still put the big money on either Hendinia or Jupiterdonia for the win but not so sure now if the predictions have been off!

I have no expectations here, I never expected to even get to the final, top 30 would be an achievement. Here for a potentially surprising results show though (I hope that favours me )

I'm hoping for a top 10 this time around. Volcano seems to have received the best reception of any of my entries this year and I'm loving it myself! Hopefully it can crossover from the pop votes to a wider audience.

I'm also excited to see what results with Jupiter look like! I'm ready to be a boss witch

Got absolutely no basis on which to make a prediction for how well I'll do but the track seemed to have a good reaction from people outside of the usual New Lexico supporters so that's something! Learnt the hard way last month to not have too high expectations (still only 95% over it, gimme a lil more time gals) so I'm just here for the ride at this point.

My prediction for the winner is Ultraviolenceland (sorry Sam!)

As to the voting order, we're roughly following the order of acts in semi 1 and semi 2 because that was the easiest way to do it on the spreadsheet with the least rejigging needed! Technically that is random since that was randomized at the start before we launched those threads

Will be interesting to see if semi 2 tracks start rising up the rankings in the second half!

I think I'm slightly more likely to vote for a track that belonged to the same semi as me. You get more time to get to know a track and once a track is in my votes, I'm sometimes reluctant to push it down in favour of newcomers. But I try to recognise and overcome my biases.

I noticed most of my votes were from Semi 1, but I listen to all of the songs together in the semis so there’s no particular reason that that should be the case other than me thinking it was a stronger semi.

But it is indeed very encouraging for Aeroche, FARC and Altyr to have done that well just from Semi 1 voters, many of whom will have already established their own big favourites if they haven’t listened to all of the songs in the first week.

I'm lowkey surprised you've only just looked at this now!

The one thing I want to know that sadly isn't measurable is to what extent songs perform better or worse depending on which country name is attached to them. Like a lot of Skall tracks would be flopping regardless and this comes from a place of curiosity and not bitterness but I'm convinced that some would have done marginally better if they were sent by Aeroche as success begets success.

I vaguely remember that! I found the contest as a whole way more predictable then though. Like Mdice just sent the latest pop-friendly blog-pushed track - and there only seemed to be a limited number of standouts per month - and you knew where it was gonna finish.

It's also interesting though that there are some long established countries who have never received points from another, or just a tiny handful over a long period (maybe Bre can produce a list at some point). So you do wonder if anonymising things would end such droughts.

Then again, it's possibly just coincidence in a lot of cases. I was amazed to find myself pointing Jayrusalem for the first time the other month, but they'd often either fallen just outside my votes or missed the final when I'd loved their entries.

In terms of the discussion about voting, I rarely look at country names unless to remark 'oh, that doesn't sound like their usual thing!' There are so many countries that I regularly forget who is who unless the name makes it obvious.

As for name recognition, I'm not sure what my last two results say about me, especially with the across the board winner predictions and promo from AQing this one!

Nova Miller ended the contest with 5 18s, the highest number of any entrant. It wasn't my 12 in its semi, but it proved to be a grower throughout the month!

It's taken over 5 years but I've finally got my first bottom 5 finish in the final! top of the flops era incoming x (...hopefully not though as I want to come back with a BANG next time with something that sounds classic Jadakissnia, aka dark and synthy) - well, at least it's a unique position! Mostly just glad that I qualified so I can keep up my long streak. Getting 2 medal positions was nice to see as well.

Congrats Altyr Muunilinst *.* didn't vote for 'Mi Amor' in this bloodbath of a final, but it was pretty good.

Thanks for doing this Jupiter, you've been fantastic!

Edit: WAIT ties aren't split so I narrowly avoided the bottom 5 actually maybe one day *_* 37th still a unique position though woooo

Did I win that tiebreak and miss the bottom 5? (Edit: lol nope) I guess I can't say I'm too surprised , like I said, I'm more just relieved to be in the final, I found picking an entry quite tough as I've been quite into listening to older music cos of my albums project, but I am glad I sent this one and it was a pleasing curveball of a qualifier and I'm pleased some made a good discovery out of it.

Very pleased for Ojnoj and Rolloland in the top 10, Suedeonia so close too! Danaeviia wayyy too low though, that was one of their best entries :'(

Surprising (but very good) winner, though it was always going to be somewhere in the mix, so the five 18s certainly solidifed its cause. A great pop song will usally find a way through.

I'm very happy and quite surprised with 6th place, I thought it would do pretty well but still expected about 5-10 places lower. It continues what feels like a solid year for us so far (not sure where we'd be in the YTD, but I guess maybe top 10?). It really caught my ear on the first listen with that throwback production and I'm glad it found a lot of big fans. It's the fifth time we've finished in that position overall.

Hendinia's entry is, again, wonderful. My second favourite of the year only after their own Goliath. And would have been a fantastic winner but third is a very solid result for it. And well done to Sam in second too, Faded would have been my 1 pointer if I'd been in that semi and was 16th in my final votes. I was tussling over whether to give it 1 point in the final, but luckily that wouldn't have changed the outcome so I'm not feeling too guilty.

Thanks a lot for a really fun and solid hosting Jupiter, really enjoyed the whole contest, fantastic quality, a lot of great discoveries and a great finish to boot.

Wow!! This is a really good winner! I kinda keep my liking of Mi Amor pretty lowkey but this sounds exceptional and I'm in awe how the song mixes emotions and catchiness pretty well! This is also the first time the winner of BJSC actually made an appearance in my chart, and with this week's ranking at 63, higher than last week (and especially this week's has been one of the most competitive top 50s I've ever had), it might even be the first entry to make an entry to top 50!

Kudos to everyone for the songs this edition as there are many records broken for me and my chart as well. Thanks a lot for the shoutout from POPHub and Pame Pame actually attained a peak of no. 6 in my chart, highest so far for a BJSC entry since I started joining in BJSC 123! This is absolutely amazing and catchy and it is underrated after finishing at 29th place here. My second shoutout and commiserations to Holland Oats for their amazing Someone Else. Surprisingly, I have this song playing a lot over the last week and it did grow on me much more than their last run in my chart -- now at no. 12 aiming for the top 10. Maybe this edition will be the first time there are two top 10 entries?

Anyways, lots and lots of great stuff and discoveries in this edition and I hope the next edition is going to be even stronger!!

Yeah Jonjo did pass when he had the hosting rights before so it would go to him first if John passes (as the succession is based on which countries have never hosted rather than which have never won).

Well congrats to John on dark horsing to a win at the last second, an exciting finale there, whew. I wasn't invested at all in any of the songs contending but 'Mi Amor' was decent, there have certainly been worse winners!

Did not vote for a single one of the top 8 in the end, I feel like that might be a record for me (think I remember a time where I didn't vote for any of the top 6 off the top of my head but I'd need to do some digging to see if there's ever been any more than that). FSR and Ojnoj were both at least commiserations though and the final 2 songs in the top 10 both got double figure points from me to make up for it a bit - great to see HAARM giving Rollo a rare top 10 (only the 2nd ever!) and BRONSON giving Thelonia a strong bounce back from DNQing the last couple of contests! <3 Shame that Suedeonia fell just short of the top 10 in the end, that was a brilliant discovery. Happy with Wholune, Rep of Adonia and Summericia all being top 20 too and a decent result relative to the odds for Greenfroze. 24th for 'Aman' is an ok result after it was floundering for so long near the start but still deserved much better! Back to hating New Lexico now though. xx Biggest disappointments here are BETHY being paid absolute dust (where did y'all's Jadakissnia taste go ) and another undeservedly low finish for Dobago, seems very bittersweet when FARC recycled Dobbo's PFSC entry and did wayyyy better with it this time...!

Very happy with getting a top 20 finish myself, three in a row and 4/5 in the year to date, hooray. Very polarising entry clearly, finishing with 12 out of 17 votes being 10+ points! I think my theory that semi 2 was better for my song is definitely at least partly vindicated although across both semis it was just a small handful of people giving it high points and little else really (and I see I was a little more comfortable qualifying than I thought). 17th though... that was already my most common final position and now is even moreso, this is the lucky 7th time!

Oh didn't see that winner coming. Thought Hendinia would be a secure winner. Nova was okay so not a bad winner.

Pleased for Rolloland, Rontvia, Thelonia and Aeroche being top 10 and liked Ojnoj too even though it just missed my votes.

Flynnonda did very well, shame they didn't hold top 10 though. Harmonica though what happened there and Dr Dick last isn't a surprise but was a tune.

Yass for managing 20th despite being joint points with Daehun.. Much higher than I envisioned!

Great job Jupiter, was really great presenting!

I see we seemed to out-perform our ranking we should've been based on number of voters, only 15 of them! Links in with the theory that my song had vocal lovers and not much casual support which gave off the impression it would do better than it did. You guys need to stop hyping me up each contest as I think I've performed worse than the predictions in every contest so far this year! Predict me last and I'll be happy when I come 40th

I will take getting 18's from Hendinia and Aeroche, two of my favourite BJSC countries as a sign of success anyway x

Also good to see my points in the semi final helped Where's My Juul? into a qualifying positions!

Right so here's some fascinating stats following on from discussion in this thread xx

Headline conclusion: with a small handful of exceptions, the bias towards songs from one's own semi-final is pretty distinct and clear-cut, this month at least. It's such a clear correlation that I'd be pretty surprised if this isn't something that's always the case, but I'll investigate a few older contests at some point to double check!

I ended up pretty close to the middle (still a small bias to my own semi, but below average among semi 1 voters) which I choose to believe is also good evidence that listening to both semi-finals helps to eliminate that bias. Though that may just be a coincidence.

Countries in blue were in semi 1, countries in red were in semi 2. Ordered by % of points given to semi 1 songs (ignoring any points given to the auto-qualifiers), so if the bias exists, you'd expect the top half to be mostly blue and the bottom half to be mostly red, and well...

Congrats to Altyr! Yay for a nailbiting finish, and I think this is decent justice served for Nova not winning before with 'Anything For U'. I never would've guessed she's only 18! I wonder where she would rank among BJSC's youngest winners

26th doesn't quite meet my expectations but I won't complain, since it's my highest finish since January. I enjoyed getting as high as 14th but sure enough peaked at the halfway mark, with all of Semi 1's votes revealed and none of Semi 2's, so the theory about the semi bias/familiarity applies there for sure.

Speaking of, I did notice while I was voting that my votes were more skewed toward my own semi than probably ever before, so not surprised at all that I was indeed the most biased to Semi 1

Can't say the top 10 was much to my tastes, only voted for three of them! Pleased that Flynnonda (my 18) got as high as 12th and a bit shocked that my 15 and 13 (Cadelicia and Greenfroze) ended up in the bottom half, both seemed like potential dark horses to me. I'm glad Singerpurear finished in a respectable place!

The hosting was thorougly enjoyable, thank you Jupiter!

Also here are the stats for the inverse (i.e. which songs received the most points from semi 1 countries vs. semi 2 countries). The outliers should match up to which songs had the worst 'wrong semi' effect (out of those that qualified obvz). I am fully vindicated in thinking I was in the wrong semi, I had the only song that was more reliant on semi 2 countries than the average semi 2 song!!!

(note that there's a small inherent bias to semi 1 as there were 29 voters from semi 1 compared to only 27 from semi 2 - though interestingly semi 2 songs as a whole received more points than semi 1 songs, so the consensus seems to be clear that semi 2 was the better semi)

Well, congratulations to John! Not a track I had on my radar at all so that's a nice surprise and it's very pleasant. And great hosting from Jupiter, I really enjoyed reading through these threads I just wish I'd qualified to be more involved with it all.

Especially interesting discussion on biases within voting, I've been fairly aware they exist for a while, I think this month was just weird for me specifically because a lot of really good songs managed to qualify from Semi 1 (Aelandor deserved far better, despite his slander) and make up the top edge of my votes even with most of my semi 2 votes also qualifying.

Interesting stats re: the bias towards the songs from your semi. I was pretty close to being straight down the middle, but ultimately my fave from my semi ended up being my fave in the final (Ojnoj)

Very interesting to see the breakdown, particularly with me being so high in the rank of people that favoured our own semi more.

My votes (I think) are usually a lot more evenly spread between semis (and AQs) but I definitely did end up in the semi more aligned to my tastes this time, which I guess was vindicated by Hayley doing so well in it. Although she did have solid, if unspectacular, support from the other semi as well; I believe her projected finish would have been just outside the top ten based on the semi result.

Good to be somewhere near the middle of the bias chart. I always spend the week the semi's are up only listening to songs from that semi, then the following week will give the same amount of listens to qualified songs from the other semi, before giving a final listen in one go to determine the order.

I always listen to the Spotify without knowing who's sent what either and only add country names on my PM to the host, to try and make sure I show no bias to certain countries.

The top 4 scores in my final vote were all from my own semi which is quite unusual. It's normally a lot more even than that. When I listened to the semi 2 qualifiers,I was waiting for a really good song to grab me but it never happened.

I'm loving these stats Bray they are really interesting! I think I've always had a bias towards my own semi unintentionally, having more time with them does help me get to know the songs better by the time the final comes around. It also doesn't help that I found semi 2 really strong this month and only my 1 pointer didn't make it. It's particularly evident that I'm the 3rd biggest culprit for it

I'm just thinking what I can do to try and avoid any bias in the future? Perhaps listening to all the songs in the first week or joining for the plug session of the other semi just for fun. I'm also wondering about country name bias too as I reckon that also has an effect on me. I tend to cherrypick and listen to the countries I usually like first as their entries grab my interest before I complete a runthrough in the semi order.

I wouldn't say country name ends up affecting the songs that are ultimately my favourites, but when the song isn't grabbing me, I'm more likely to give it another chance if it was sent by one of my favourite countries compared to a country I don't usually vote for, so it might end up towards the lower end of my points due to that bias?

62.9% I thought it was somewhat equal given 2 of my top 3 are from semi-final 2, but then I do have more favourites in the first semi than the second semi. I will try my best to be as unbiased as possible for the next contest. X

Well it's good to see I'm fairly balanced, I can't deny I do fall victim to bias when I have less time with the other semi (I often just don't have the time nor the will to listen to 60+ songs in a week, it was hard enough when I AQ'd!), but I do try and make up for it by listening to the Semi 1 qualifiers that I like twice to get a feel of them. Sometimes though, it's just simply my music taste, there were a lot of Semi 1 songs that were right up my street anyway and would've ranked highly either way.

The semi 1 vs semi 2 stats are indeed interesting. I'm not surprised that I had a bias towards semi 1 this time, I had far more time to listen in the first week than the second so I didn't give as much time to the growers in semi 2 compared to the first one.

I get that feeling that everyone is going to be so conscious of the bias that next contest we'll all be favouring the other semi! Guess it reflects best when people are unaware what they're doing.

To be clear these stats aren't intended to call people out, there's not really anything wrong with being biased to one semi over the other (it could just be that way purely because of the songs from one semi aligning with your tastes much more than the other, TARO Bellamia's votes in particular look like a strong case of that which clearly overpowered any own-semi bias) - it's just interesting from a stats geek perspective to observe how clear the own-semi bias is on average.

Maybe I'll do this again next contest and see if people being more aware of this bias results in the difference being less clear

It's also occurred to me that the songs that qualified from each semi are, of course, determined by the other voters from the same semi in the first place, thus weeding out the songs least likely to be supported by countries from the same semi. Maybe it'd be more even if everyone voted in both semis (not suggesting that we should do that, just a hypothetical).

This is why, when I first pointed it out, that it makes sense for there to be a 'bias' towards the bottom as all songs in each semi have an amount of support that took them through that they wouldn't necessarily get from the other semi. I didn't find it all surprising that most of the bottom 8 at the half way point were from Semi 2, more so that most of the songs at the top were Semi 1.

Yes I hadn't thought of that! The semi participants collectively weed out the tracks they're not so keen on, but these could have been more popular with voters from the other semi.

It's generally not a problem because the numbers voting in each semi are (meant to be) equal, so the effect should cancel each other out. The only issue might be that tracks in the 'wrong semi' are hindered in the final, even if they make it.

I'm not gonna try and change my bias with this, but it's interesting to get confirmation that I do indeed have them. I'm gonna paste the entry list into LibreOffice without the country names, as I used to, though, as I'm certain I have a bias there that's a bit more unfair.

I think there is an inherent bias towards one's own semi - PROVIDING YOUR FAVES MAKE THE FINAL - because you hear them more than once. It has to be that way, as I currently rank songs the way I do eurovision voting, by giving them points out of 100, and judging the next song by previous points for previous songs so they end up with an overall ranking. If 2 are so close that it's a gnats whisker, I compare by playing one after the other to split them up.

With the final, I remind myself of the songs in my semi as I concentrate on the songs from the other semi and slide them in amongst the existing points out of 100, re-point any that have grown on me more (which is not as easy for songs in t'other semi) and then when Ive got the final 20 or so contenders I reverse-check play them from 20 up to 1, which sort of shuffles them naturally in the correct slots as some move up a bit and some move down a bit.

The final bias is mood - sometimes I'm in a pop-ho mood, sometimes I'm in a "looking for something different" mood, sometimes a "mellow reflective" mood, and this can change on a daily basis and during the day, depending on time, which is why a few plays spread out are better for sorting out bias towards or against songs where mood is unfairly going against some tracks.

I'm nothing if not methodical, and these days I buy my absolute faves off itunes (any that make my charts, I have paid for, and the countries entering them have got the artists a sale out of it, hooray!)

I voted 9 from semi 1 and 8 from semi 2 this time. My 2 favourites were from my semi though. 'Josslyn' probably had an unfair advantage as I've been aware of that song for longer, even before this contest. Interestingly 4 out of the next 5 in my votes were from semi 1.

EDIT: Also was it just me or were Semi 2 countries a lot more pop orientated than usual? (and those countries voted the more poppier songs from semi 1)

A very high semi-correlation oops I do remember thinking a lot of the songs from the other semi weren't great though. For me I think a lot of it is the fact that the songs I vote for in the semi very often get through (looking at the scoreboard, two of my Final top 3 wouldn't have made it if I hadn't voted for them) and I know that if I'd have been in the other semi, Silly People by Blanks would have gotten my +12 which would likely have propelled it into the Final to get my +18.

The way I rank my songs in the Final pretty much removes any bias as I rank all the songs initially and then listen to my Top 25 in reverse order and re-rank (generally the Top 25 contains all the songs I found remotely interesting as it does feel like there are often a lot of same-y songs that reach the final), so even if I do put the songs from my own semi higher to start with, the scorboard evens out on my second listen.

I either spend 90% of my time listening to my own semi and then rush vote the final

or rush vote my semi and then spend time with the final.

I would imagine if these stats continue I'll wildly waver between semi bias and equality.

One deadline is hard enough, two kills me off most months.

I wish there would be a list of what qualified from each semi each month in the finals post, or a colour code or some shit like that.

In case anyone was wondering why there hasn't been any news about the next contest yet, we are on our annual gap between the 5th and 6th contests of the year (which is meant to be like a month but is only actually a couple of weeks again due to certain contests overrunning x).
