Given we're missing the hosts...

Posted by: Oricon 28th January 2012, 12:03 AM

That'll be editted in once he uses his entry biggrin.gif

Posted by: Silas 28th January 2012, 12:15 AM

Edited it in, the advantages of seeing the full entry list before everyone else.

Posted by: Oricon 28th January 2012, 12:16 AM

Going off to listen to the hosts own entry dance.gif

Posted by: Ryan741 28th January 2012, 11:48 AM

I'm very interested as always to see the odds for this contest, especially given the positivity around my entry! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Liаm 28th January 2012, 11:55 AM

I can't wait to see the odds for my entry, I think it could literally do anything drama.gif

I'll do odds later in the week but glossing everything over, out of the ones I've heard I think we should watch out for The Storm, Mercedes & I, Foxes, Moa Lignell and Carley Rae Jepsen (watch as all of these flop tongue.gif).

Posted by: LexC 28th January 2012, 11:57 AM

Major case of bandwagon jumping here but I'm interested to here the odds for Mercedes & I, I think it's definitely got crossover appeal but that doesn't always translate into votes.

Posted by: Jonjo 28th January 2012, 11:59 AM

The three songs I think who are going to win/have the best chance are all in semi 2. We need to watch out for Prance Faris, MNDR and (of course) Carly Rae Jepsen. (I still don't think CRJ will win though sad.gif)

Posted by: Hitstastic 28th January 2012, 12:07 PM

Interestingly, the three tracks in SF2 I see doing well are Carly Rae Jepson (as Jonjo has mentioned) but the other two are Foxes and SoSo.

Posted by: LexC 28th January 2012, 03:01 PM

NOTES: Please Don't let the odds lead to a series of depressed/elated ramblings that contribute nothing to the discussion. These odds are by no mens a reflection of my onw tastes/votes merely what I think is likely to do well. Furthermore, LecciBet is a famously unreliable institution!

Well I heart.gif them odds! My first ever time being 1st favourite on anyone's odds! I'm still aiming to qualify though, especially as my semi is of such high quality smile.gif

Posted by: Juranamo 28th January 2012, 03:52 PM

Not at the bottom of the first set of odds! cheer.gif Promising! Rontvia near the top as usual, Rich has the 'BJSC taste' I think. biggrin.gif (In that he doesn't intentionally think of what will do well, just what he likes, seems to be to the tastes of many others!)

Posted by: Tom Krystal Kay 28th January 2012, 03:52 PM

Wow, that's a good start, although maybe I should be more worried given the source laugh.gif

Posted by: Jester 28th January 2012, 04:12 PM

And what makes the fabulous Twintapes worthy of such bad odds? dry.gif See, this is part of the reason why I stopped entering, some people just don't haver the ear for something a bit less mainstream.

biggrin.gif

I shall be posting my own odds once I've had chance to hear the mp3s in full (yes, including Eledan's entry). There's one track in the top half of LexC's odds that I can't help but think it's a definite DNQ. Not gonna say which one as that'd be unfair but I'll be shocked if it qualifies.

Careful Matt, you're doing a Mikey!

(Also, I wouldn't go into sulk mode off the back of one dubious set of odds!)

Posted by: LexC 28th January 2012, 04:25 PM

My thinking was that the worst odds should get posted first so as not to distract everyone once the more reputable ones are posted.

I know I am in danger of doing a Mikey here and apols of it seems like sour grapes, but when you really love a song it does rather miff me when I get the usual end of the odds place.

I have never really said anything before when my entries have DNQ or been so low (or last even laugh.gif) as that is fair enough that my taste is different to the BJSC entrants, but as this my return of sorts it is a bit 'GRR' to get bad odds again.

Sulk mod *off*

I don't think that would be unfair, I'm interested to see which track youre thinking off. Better not be mine!

I'm always at the 18-25/1 section, wish I can be higher at times sad.gif

Yours was the song that stood out in the Semi the most, from the recap at least wub.gif

And look new odds are in and PRoJ are miraculously at 35/2. MOOPYHA!

I agree...it stood out with me as well...I have to hear it the full thing though for fully judge.

And nothing against Emily Osment and/or Eva Simon songs, but seeing them getting higher odds over some other quality songs IMO (Eledan in this case) disgusts me and is shaking my trust on everything I have about this contest.

I am just thrilled to be at the top of Aquafina's debut odds and top3 in Allecian's odds.

A strong finish for FSR Ashvania would be rare and very pleasing to see.

Joint 3rd in Aquafina's odds! Good start so far biggrin.gif

I'll wait for Rich's ultimate odds biggrin.gif

Very pleased with 2nd in both sets of odds so far!

My odds won't be for a while, I haven't even started to listen yet and probably won't get around to it until Monday!

Does 'Flares' contain a sample? (ie; the speeded up vocals). I wonder if 2012 will set a new glass ceiling for dance music - something like 1st place. biggrin.gif

Not that I know of, I know very little about the song or act though to be honest, just that I love it! Why, do the vocals remind you of something else?

They do very much so! Their quite in vain of the vocals on 'Cry (Just A Little)' or your typical Euro dance plodder. Flares is very much the opposite of that though! biggrin.gif

It doesn't sound familiar but because it's the same one line repeated I was just under the impression the vocals had been sampled from another song.

I read in your FSR Rontvia how you've described Prance Faris as a cross between Avicci and Sash! so obviously this has made Batidas sit up and pay attention. I'm hoping the songs I'm liking the most in SF2 qualify. biggrin.gif

I can see the similarity with that (strictly vocals only!) now you mention it. If there was a pure instrumental version available I'd have probably sent that but I've become very endeared to the vocals now, they're quite charming in a strange way laugh.gif

Maybe they were, I'll do a lyric search at some point and see what it throws up! I know NOTHING about this artist apart from the fact that he or they are Swedish laugh.gif

Indeed, it's like the 'sound' of Avicii meets the uplifting melody progression of something like La Primavera by Sash!, hence my comparison!

Potential winners above the line, but I think it's probably Ramrynia's to lose. Close contests ALWAYS throw up a charming catchy solo female pop winner and it stands out FAR more than the majority of the pop songs in this month's contest (it's all about the strings etc...).

I'd probably agree with all those winners, it's got to be one of those 6 this month, unless someone throws up a serious dark horse.

I can't believe these amazing odds - especially 2-1 favourite from gooddelta/Rich ! Like I've said all along I would just be happy with another qualification smile.gif
You did say Liam, as well as some others during my decision process, it could do well - and hopefully it will! I won't get too excited yet though laugh.gif

It does look possible that Syndare may be able to pull off a debut win as well - so well done there smile.gif

Bit of a mixed bag of odds for Marigold!

Ever since I first heard it I thought 'this could be a BJSC winner/top five', and for that reason I considered it briefly in October. But it never really made it high enough up my personal chart (initially at least, maybe it could get a second wind?) for it to be one of my serious contenders. It ticks all of the boxes though, and with no likely runaway winner this month I can see it snatching the win.

As for Syndare, it's a very strong debut entry, and a definite top ten debut, probably top five. I'm not sure it'll get *quite* enough widespread support to steal a debut win for them (I'm seeing something close to Vanbot's 4th place - very similar sound), but it shows signs of real promise from a nation that's sure to be one of the most successful of 2012!

All it takes to win BJSC is the perfect song choice (and the occasional bit of luck that there's no juggernaut in the way!). Past form means very little when you have an entry with obvious widespread appeal - I'll confidently bet all of my belongings that you won't DNQ biggrin.gif

Headhunted was different, it was very vocally love/hate (22 people commented on it in the Semi voting thread and it was split evenly between fans and haters - the majority of the fans being in the opposite semi, the haters being in mine laugh.gif) and although it's looked back on as a surprise DNQ, taking account all of the mass hate for it and my 'wrong semi' misfortune, it wasn't really that much of a shock!

Posted by: Liаm 30th January 2012, 12:09 AM

Oh, obviously I wasn't competing at the time so had no idea about Headhunted, I thought it was a Loreen-esque 'obvious winner' (on a lesser scale), but I've learnt something new tonight then tongue.gif

Posted by: Silas 30th January 2012, 03:46 AM

Headhunted was spectacularly Love/Hate to the point that no song since has been able to come anywhere near it.

I was very firmly on the Love side of the fence. Bloody glorious song and video.

Indeed, pages 11-14 http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=76914&st=200 are BJSC GOLD, Jack got the ball rolling and then the haters wouldn't stop crawling out of the woodwork! Note the retrospective Mikey of the week in there too! I was midly horrified but at the same time found it hilarious, it split opinion down the middle and we've still never seen a more talked about song prior to the results being revealed! I was being overconfident about its chances for sure but had it managed the extra few points it would have needed to get to the final, and the majority of its fans in the other semi, I'm sure it could have challenged for the top ten. Vincent's DNQ is the only one I accept graciously, Headhunted is a Rontvian classic, and still up there amongst my favourite entries that I've ever sent wub.gif

It's only in extreme cases I guess. Vincent attracted no real opinion either way iirc, and DNQ'd from being too average against the competition I guess. It's not like I was expecting it to go top five but Miss Blue was more than good enough for a place in the final, imo. But I guess everyone feels that way about their DNQ's, we wouldn't send them if we didn't like them (apart from a few countries who have admitted to sending songs that they don't like laugh.gif).

Mine All Mine was her only BJSC hit to date, and thanks to Maria lets face it (although I'm not sure that I'd have enjoyed that half as much as a Maria solo!) I can't fathom why people continue to send Mira periodically, she's clearly never going to be very liked on Buzzjack!

Good to see everyone predicting Foxes will do well. I can't get over just how much I'm in love with the track at the moment, I'm feeling very wary about it's chances though as it's the first entry that I've really cared about in such a manner since Watch The World Go By back in my debut contest.

2nd in those odds! biggrin.gif This is brilliant so far!

Still looking very good for a debut win for Syndare as well at the moment!

Ooh great odds there biggrin.gif I was thinking Dia would DNQ, but I'm a bit more confident as the week goes on.

If anything it's getting under-predicted! It sounds like a definite top 10 to me!

Your entry is practically 0.5 off being my joint favourite. I think the winner of BJSC XLI is most likely going to be one of the top 5 nations in my odds.

I personally think it's going to be another Rontvian victory this month, I can imagine it picking up votes from many different quarters.

The top 5 or 6 in the odds are very close, and it seems to be the same ones popping up at the top of most people's! I hope this is a good sign for another Ramrynia qualification to the final at least! biggrin.gif

I'm quite surprised and very pleased at how well SoSo is fairing in the odds - seems to be a consensus top six so far, and I'm ecstatic to be part of it! I'd still be shocked at a win, but even a top ten on my first competition would be fantastic. So thank you; especially Iz, Tom and Hits for putting me at the top of the odds!

Sad that my personal favourite discovery (I'm not telling!) seems to be at risk of not even qualifying, but you can't have everything.

Luckily the song's in the semi where it has two guaranteed HUGE fans, I'm sure it can rack up another 15-20 points needed to qualify from the remaining 22 voting countries!

Assuming I'm thinking of the same song as you that is laugh.gif

The one thing I hate more than know it all busy bodies, is people who say 'oooooh I just hope I qualify' when the song is quite CLEARLY a cert for top5.

laugh.gif No offence taken biggrin.gif I'm still in the mindset that it's not really that different to Demi and Katie (in a strange way) as it is still pop except being a bit more mainstream, so I'm seriously shocked to have what looks to be a good chance at doing well and getting top 5 as you say - but I'll happily take it!

I'll stop going on in future starting now! wink.gif

BJSC has always been the home of modesty, Nonsuch, Simondly and Kingdom of Shadow perfected the trait of underplaying their entries, often to the point that you wondered if they were bluffing. I don't find it annoying as such but if you genuinely believe that your entry has a great shot at doing well then I don't believe that there's any shame in admitting it. I often plop my song into the business end of the odds if I believe that it has a chance of going top five!

Obviously some months I'll send something with a glass ceiling of crossover appeal just for the sake of variety or introducing something to a select few who like a niche genre (Caro Emerald, Markoolio and Linda, Elsiane) and in those cases I adjust accordingly and put myself mid-table or lower...Aside from a few cases (Headhunted, Not A Love Song) I'm never that far out with my own predictions of my own entries and their eventual finishing positions.

Well, I remember putting 'Riverside' comfortably inside my top 5 nations to win BJSC when I made my debut. I was convinced 'Punk Rock Song' was going to win but deep down inside I wanted Agnes to win purely because I adored the song so much. I still didn't think I'd win but be a top 5 contender. Winning was both brilliant but also a shock. It's difficult to explain how you feel when you win something like this with a song you personally love so much.

That's what made me laugh about Peter30 when 'Louder' won the BJSC I hosted, and he said the song didn't deserve to win compared to 'Release Me'. laugh.gif When someone wins and the first thing they post is "it isn't deserved compared to my last winner" it generates a biggrin.gif moment.

I can appreciate the feeling, it's a sense of pride combined with elation that a lot of people have made a fantastic discovery purely thanks to you. Which is why I could never understand people sending 'cheap' songs, for me BJSC is about discovering great new music and introducing people to great new music, not sending any old song to see how high I can finish. Each to their own but I don't think I'd feel any sense of pride or elation in finishing top three with some new leak by one of the world's biggest stars laugh.gif

Peter's always been brutally honest but I can see where he was coming from. Release Me was a landmark winner, Louder was the most forgettable of 2011. Sometimes other people just end up liking your entry more than you do!

On average, Usfland are about 68-1 with the bookies.

Being realistic: I don't think we'll qualify for the final.

Oh no, I do that too, they're certainly not based on mathematical probability kink.gif

I only did decimals for the semi finals as I can't get my head around odds-on ratios sad.gif . The decimal odds are based on a Ł1 stake, the profit you make is the decimal minus Ł1. So odds of 1.10 on a Ł1 stake would mean you get your Ł1 back, as well as 10p profit. Someone please tell me if I've got that wrong! laugh.gif

Well as far as semi finals are concerned, anything could happen laugh.gif . I've kept the odds lower for the semis as each song is competing for one of 15 qualifying spots rather than in the odds to win where all the entries are competing for the one winning place.

And I actually do think Lievant has a 50/50 chance of qualifying!

If all my faves make the final, I'll have a nightmare allocating points. There are a good 5 songs here that would get my 12 points in an average contest. Then there's a few others that I'm liking that in any other contest would be an easy 10 points.

Since her flagrant endorsement of leather clothing, Diana has been banned from Syndarian territories. Any televised repeats featuring the songstress have been edited in case the conscientious Syndarian public should be confronted with her again.

Olly however is free to move as he pleases, although radio stations refuse to play anything except 'Heart Skips A Beat', which gathered such popularity on pirate radio broadcasts that Syndarian officials granted a pardon on his previous offences.

Nope, he's giving it evens, which means 50% chance to win. A certainty would technically be 0/1, but you'll never see odds like that, so it's more likely to be something ridiculous like 1/250 for an outcome you are certain about (and yes, the 1 is on the left here).

No, I think it's going to be tight between the top four, but I think this is Ashton do have a fantastic chance to win and It's also one of my five favorite songs. I actually love 2 songs that have poor odds for me. Infact all odds are closing in on Ashton for me, especially Call Me Maybe.

I do think Unovia are due a win soon and for me remain the dark horses of this competition, but I don't think they will win this BJSC, also think their is a better song from their artist.

If I was a betting man I would put 10p on Elden. It's going to be a really, really close battle and I for one is looking forward to this. I just hope that Ashton's song has a greater appeal as in previous competitions they don't seem to get the votes from the pop lovers.

Rontvia is the biggest challanger as I've stated as their odds have them on good odds, it seems anything Rich enters will always guarantee top 10 though.

I came 18th last month tongue.gif If Flares does well I'd like to hope it's because of its own merit and not because of any feeling of loyalty from anybody towards me. I guess Adaline flopping last month proved that if I send something that the majority don't care for, then it will fail, and quite rightfully so!

As for Tone Damli, it's hard to tell because Butterflies, her signature track, finished 4th, and Tone's other BJSC entries - all with a similar 'sound' - had varying levels of success (one even DNQ'd). That said, the contest is a LOT more pop dominated than it was when Butterflies was entered, practically all of the new countries love their pure female pop. This will benefit both Tone and Call Me Maybe, which I doubt would have had a chance of winning a 2009 contest, just because of the different makeup of the participating countries' music tastes. I do think that Look Back is a certainty for the top ten though, incredibly likely to go top five and a possible winner.

I didin't mean it to come across like that you get high loyality from people. I always like your choices and you would see that through my votes. I didin't take part last month so I apoligise.

I would be shocked if Ashton did miss the top 5 though, like I said It's a five horse race I believe with Yourself, Ashton, Ramryina, Numayania and I believe we will see a shock finish from someone who I believe could be Unovia, Tinmark or Allecian.

No need to apologise! No offence taken, and I'm glad that you like a lot of my choices! But I've noticed comments in the past (not from you!) that seem to suggest that a lot of my entries do well because of my popularity on Buzzjack. I don't see why that should transfer over to a song contest but who knows how other people vote? All I know is that I personally vote for my 10 favourite songs each month, regardless of who is sending them.

What about Syndare? I'd be surprised to see them miss the top three ohmy.gif

Posted by: Hitstastic 2nd February 2012, 03:33 PM

I always vote for the songs, not the person sending the song. Otherwise I'd have given 'Strawberry Shake' my 12 points just because it was GD sending the song. Instead, it was one of the songs that got an early exit when whittling down my faves in that contest.

Other than that, most of FSR Ronvia's entries in 2011 got some Batidas love. Only Ria and Adaline (spelling?) didn't quite make the cut when it came to allocating points in the final.

Syndare's entry is also very good, It's going to be a close call, and I for one can't wait to see the outcome and who wins, it's going to be very intresting. But I do think it will be a five horse race. I am optimistic about Aquafina's chances of qualifying as I do have an awful record 4/5 DNQ but the songs seems to be getting average odds, think I played it too safe this month.

Posted by: Ryan741 2nd February 2012, 04:05 PM

Glad to see Call Me Maybe still being one of the front-runners and doing even better on Aquafina's odds!

I think I'll post the average odds later tonight, so you'll have time to look at them properly before the results on Saturday. So if you want to update your odds or post any new ones, please do so in the next few hours to be included in the averages smile.gif

I'm pretty sure that I will be one of the people that you think has said this, as I've made comments about FSR Rontvia's popularity in the past, but I haven't meant it to come out in a way about your popularity yourself on the site, but more than now Rontvia are this 'notorious Top 10' finisher, people are more interested to hear your entries.

I can see why people might go to listen to my entries first, based on this 'regular top 10 finisher' status. However this does add a huge amount of pressure, it's almost as if I'm expected to be coming up with some incredible, inspired song every month that will appeal to everybody laugh.gif If only! Ria and Britanny McDonald proved that even I like to indulge in some generic female pop sometimes, even if it didn't do my diversity much good. I always get called out on it if I send something generic but they were genuinely my favourite non-charting songs at the time!

But certainly Kopecka, Ashton and Numayania and more recently Batidas, Espen and Caerfyrddia's entries are usually the first ones I listen to each month, purely based on past form. Not that that means that they're any more or less likely to get points from me that month just because of I've listened to them first! Sometimes I'll think 'oh...was that it', whilst others I'll think 'my God, they've done it again! wub.gif' I rate each song out of 10 as I go along anyway so the order that I listen to them is irrelevant.

Posted by: Silas 2nd February 2012, 09:41 PM

Everyone thought I used to give Rich 12's constantly because it was Rich and we had some form of voting alliance thing, but I genuinely love those tracks. 2011 has proven that Rich get's it on merit alone as that was the single worst year for points from Ashton to Rontvia.

I am LOVING those odds and being top of them. That is very lovely to see. I personally expected Tone to do rather well, but winning would be exceeding my expectations. I would love a top5, and like Rich said that's where Butterflies wub.gif made got to (Although there was some shock indie fans) and not as many pop fans. I'd like to be able to say I'm a cert for top5, but I've entered so many tracks in the past I thought would sail into the top 10 then either DNQ'd (Nevio/Cilmi cry.gif - Although I agree with TiP, have that qualified it'd have done very well) or flopped into the 20's hence the era of flop for Ashton. Although, now looking back I can see a quality increase starting in the middle of my DNQ streak and feel more deserving of last years success.

Indeed, it's one thing to attract good odds based on past performance - I guess I tend to subconsciously bump up the likes of Mdice and Batidas based on past form regardless of what they send - but converting those predictions into results is an altogether more difficult task! Adaline probably WAS getting blanket top ten predictions last month because everyone always expects me to finish top ten but in the end odds mean nothing if people don't actually care for the song when it comes down to the voting!

QUOTE(Silas @ Feb 2 2012, 09:41 PM) *
Everyone thought I used to give Rich 12's constantly because it was Rich and we had some form of voting alliance thing, but I genuinely love those tracks. 2011 has proven that Rich get's it on merit alone as that was the single worst year for points from Ashton to Rontvia.

FSR Ashvia fell apart a bit in 2011, 2012 is where it gets back on track tongue.gif Admittedly though, I can see why you didn't like some of my entries last year - whereas in 2010 my entries would have generally appealed to the same people each time, in 2011 I was changing things up nearly every month genre wise and it would have been nigh on impossible for anybody to love all ten and I wouldn't have expected anyone to.

I actually liked most of your entries in 2011, it was only Electric and Every Time (You Look At Me) which didn't get any support from me - most of the others got 6's and 7's although a couple got 1 or 2 points I think...Look Back is my favourite entry of yours since Forget Your Name I think, which you'll recall got my full 18 points!

Posted by: lee wallace 2nd February 2012, 11:53 PM

I think the more victories and the more experience you have with BJSC the more hype you have around your name as Rich says when songs are released you jump and look at nations that have intrested you in the past.

Posted by: Oricon 3rd February 2012, 12:36 AM

^ That and in general the countries whom you vote for most, some people tend to jump and listen to their tracks first.

I admit for example I tend to listen to the likes of Numayania, Séyetana, Unovia, Ramrynia, Kluminican Republic first because I have a tendency to like their entries quite often. That doesn't mean I'll like their all their entries though, as people will see this time round wink.gif

Well done for so effortlessly alienating the others.

Posted by: Sabrewulf 3rd February 2012, 07:36 AM

I always listen to the songs in the order they are listed on voting page. Doesn't matter if I've loved dozens of your entries in the past you're still last if you are listed last.

Posted by: gooddelta 3rd February 2012, 09:00 AM

I just put them all onto my iPod and listen to them in whichever order they come up on there. If the host hasn't tagged/numbered the MP3's in line with the draw then that usually means that I listen to them by alphabetical order of the artist names by default.

It's only occasionally that I purposefully go to listen to certain countries entries first, a lot of the time I've already heard the songs that they're sending before anyway laugh.gif None of the six countries that I listed earlier have sent a song this month that I didn't already know before confirmation opened.

Although judging from their form in 2011, Kylienips does look out of place. The others made up the top 3 most successful nations of 2011. ohmy.gif

Ojnoj knocked me down to 4th right at the end.

Kylienips have always done worse than us three, oddly enough. Even when Ashton hit a slump we were still riding high in the overall rankings.

BJSC XLI Average Odds

Here we go then! I have averaged out the 9 sets of odds given (and rounded to the nearest whole number - so if a country is higher than another, they do have better odds but have been rounded for the sake of being more "odds-like") - any odds that were updated afterwards were the odds that were used and not the originals. Also, in one case - the odds to win have been used, and not the odds to qualify. Finally, I have split them into the 2 semi finals, so we can see who the odds predict to qualify. Remember the odds are to win the final and not each semi.

Here are the overall BJSC odds at the moment...

Semi Final 1 Entrants (Average odds to win the final)
01. 5/1 - Numayania
02. 6/1 - Ashton
03. 12/1 - ChrIseland
04. 14/1 - Unovia
05. 16/1 - Batidas
06. 17/1 - Allecian
07. 19/1 - Daehun
08. 19/1 - Aquafina
09. 21/1 - Hendinia
10. 22/1 - Botanikka
11. 22/1 - Isconia
12. 24/1 - N-Lazone
13. 25/1 - B.a.N.G
14. 27/1 - Budtar
15. 29/1 - Tinnmark
-----------------------------------------------------
16. 31/1 - Sangria
17. 31/1 - Juranabaijan
18. 32/1 - Republic of Sass *
19. 37/1 - Hogan-Burg Republic
20. 37/1 - Dalisska
21. 39/1 - People's Republic of Jester *
22. 45/1 - Armenijain
23. 109/1 - Eledan

Semi Final 2 Entrants (Average odds to win the final)
01. 3/1 - Ramrynia
02. 5/1 - Syndare
03. 5/1 - FSR Rontvia
04. 8/1 - Fljotavik
05. 13/1 - Mdice
06. 13/1 - FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold
07. 14/1 - Kopecka
08. 17/1 - Kluminican Republic
09. 19/1 - Seyetana
10. 23/1 - Ojnoj
11. 24/1 - Espen
12. 24/1 - Bignia-Zaragovina
13. 24/1 - Scherzland
14. 29/1 - Danaelanda
15. 30/1 - Kylienips
------------------------------------------------------
16. 31/1 - Lievant
17. 33/1 - Caerfyrddia
18. 33/1 - Farahtyn
19. 35/1 - Persephonia *
20. 36/1 - UnoShake
21. 44/1 - Zechonia
22. 45/1 - New Caprica
23. 65/1 - Usfland

In semi final 1, one set of odds had Eledan down at 1150/1, I changed this to 115/1 to avoid an average which would have been extremely high due to this.

In terms of overall odds, 6 countries seem to be pulling out in front, these being Ramrynia, Numayania, Syndare, FSR Rontvia, Ashton and Fljotavik. Will one of these be the ultimate winner, or will there be a surprise in store?

* Also, the 3 countries that have yet to vote are all in the bottom 8 of their respective semi finals. And will any surprise countries qualify? And can Eledan spring the biggest surprise in BJSC history?

Hope you find it interesting, and are you surprised by anyone's average odds? Also so far Greenfroze have average odds to win the final of 34/1.

Some of the songs with longer odds (See Kopecka/Mdice) I think will do well, but have no shot of winning. I reckon 7-12 beckons for them.

Yes, I did just put myself top of my own odds kink.gif We are starting to get more confident in our own entry. Above the line is the likely top5 but I can see this being a straight Tone vs Carly fight, which I naturally want to win.

It does seem to be where the momentum is at the moment, only Ramrynia might get in the way of an easy victory for Ashton, depends how much Call Me Maybe appeals to the Semi 1 voters, I'm going to assume that they'll more or less appeal to the same voters for the most part.

As a side note, I would love to bag another top five this month, but I'd be content with a return to the top ten after last month's minor disaster laugh.gif

It's sort of crept up on the outside for me, despite always being a strong contender from the off. My only doubts came from the fact that Tone's BJSC record is patchy, with even Butterflies 'only' finishing 4th. However, as I stated before, the landscape of the contest has completely changed since she was last entered and the pure pop lovers really rule the roost now, purely by virute of vastly outnumbering everybody else.

The odds get very long, very quickly because realistically there is little chance of anyone outside the top5 winning and a lot of the songs have basically no chance of winning.

The newer people here need to break the link between position on the odds and finishing position. Both Kopecka and Mdice are in the 30's but I expect them to be around the bottom of the top 10, I don't think they'll win which is why they have long odds.

I like how it wasn't mentioned in the list of front runners to begin with and was just kind of near the top at the start. Then as the week's progressed it's built up into a proper front runner.

I Love You did alright in the end and tbf it should have finished lower than Butterflies as it's not as good. I Know is a disastrous DNQ and I don't think the Live video helped it's cause in a NGDA situation.

Who knows, maybe Mdice could wade in with another unexpected Tone Damli 12? ohmy.gif Call Me Maybe might have quite a bit of crossover appeal, I saw it in West's chart in the personal chart forum and he's quite indie in his tastes usually. A strong pop song, which Look Back is, should always have a degree of crossover appeal. And if not then you could just twelve it to victory by not even appealing to the majority of the voters (until the UK release of course funky.gif) a la Video Games!

It's been a firm third in my odds throughout the week but as the hype for SoSo has petered off a bit (although I still can't envisage it outside the top five), the hype for Tone has only grown and grown, from comments I've seen in this and other threads it seems like you've already got five or six guaranteed 12's in the bag! More to the point, although the song is really instant, it's also an incredible grower. So people won't get bored of it after the first listen, but it's instantly likeable enough to know that you want to support it. And the sky's the limit on subsequent listens.

I always appreciate seeing honesty over modesty in the odds. And it's great to see odds from AshBet, you really should do them every month! People that are worried about looking big headed by giving themselves good odds with a great song should just remember that if the UK had a stunning entry to Eurovision, a certain winner, I can guarantee that William Hill would restrict the odds to as narrow as possible, 6/4 or something, because everybody would rush to put money on their home country if they believed that we had a chance in a display of misplaced patriotism. British bookies always get the most money put on the United Kingdom, because Joe Public has never heard any of the other songs pre-contest and put a small bet on it just in case.

There's no room for modesty at a bookmakers, you'd lose too much money. Which is why I never understood why the likes of Nonsuch and Kingdom of Shadow would downplay one of their many top 3's to a 40/1 along with a 'oh no, it's never going to do as well as you all think because...' type comment. Admittedly the former was proven correct with Never Leave You finishing 'only' 9th, which he hailed one of the greatest pop songs of the noughties when it leaked and he confirmed it. That's not delusion, that's incredible hyperbole.

It's a good song (I almost sent a Belanova song to BJSC before actually ohmy.gif) but auto-qualifying countries always have an uphill struggle to do well in the final unless the song is outstanding, purely because the 15 qualifying from each semi have a ton of existing support already and hence have a massive headstart. It's why I decided to opt out of AQ'ing when I was hosting the last couple of times, I was also sending growers to both of those contests and the extra week of people hearing it definitely helps out a grower imo!

Indeed, I like quite a few songs by them. I also strongly considered Inevitable by Dulce Maria (a similar act) once but I never ended up liking these songs quite as much as my eventual entries.

You'll definitely get points of course, it won't put people off voting for it if they really like it. Loads of auto-qualifiers have done well in the past to prove this point!

AQ's are at a disadvantage to everybody else but it doesn't mean that they can't do well. The same rule applies to Eurovision, all of the qualifiers from the semis have existing supporters but with a fantastic song - Satellite, It's My Time etc...this can be overcome. However, AQ's are also most likely to finish bottom five if they don't have a strong song. Step forward Spain or the UK most years laugh.gif

QUOTE(gooddelta @ Feb 5 2012, 08:47 AM) *
To be fair, your second win should have come with Jag Kommer so it's a bit overdue!

A win for Jag Kommer would have been nice, but I can't complain as I did really like the winner (just not as much as I love Forget Your Name laugh.gif).

West I always saw as being pop when he participated here and very pro Canada as iirc he sent Lights. I think Carly Rae being big in Canada right now may have more to do with that than it's cross over appeal heehee.gif I also can't see lightning striking twice on a Mdice 12 for Ashton.

I found Look Back to be an instant 10.5/10 on first listen of the clip on Norwegian iTunes, but I am a complete loon for her. The full song bumped it up to a 11/10 straight off the bat. While I did fall instantly, I find that I keep coming back to it and I keep falling in love with new bits and new lyrics and just loving it more and more. I must admit I don't get the hype for SoSo as a winner. It's good but I just don't see it winning, there's something missing. Unlike Raining Diamonds, the second I heard that I knew it would walk away with the win. Was totally gutted I got beaten to that.

I can't remember the last time I actually did odds, it's very rare we actually bother. Oh yeah, each country's own nation should figure quite well in their odds as in reality most people will put some money on their own country to win.

Never Leave You wasn't helped by the Ashtonise hate campaign. I don't think the songs likely biggest fan speaking rather blatantly against it inspired much faith in his odds.
I am so glad we have the veto and no reservation thread anymore. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the reservation thread is the single worst thing this contest has ever put up with re:format. When we did the reboot, I made it quite clear when I suggested the changes that it was under no circumstances to stay. Ruined the contest.

The momentum the songs getting outside of BJSC is AMAZING to see, in here it's slightly terrifying as I really don't want to be tarred with the Overhyped brush like I was in XII (Even though it was only the old guard big 3 of me, Tyron and Rich that supported it)

Really? It wasn't ideal but I wouldn't have it down as the worst thing we've ever had. I'd say the free-for-all before the banlist/veto where ANYTHING could be sent aside from NF entries (before we got that overturned - remember when that was somehow an issue? laugh.gif) was the worst.

Get over yourself! You're acting as though you wrote, sang & produced the song.
Anybody can find a song.. Like I said earlier, I planned to send 'Call Me Maybe' but I was too late.

This isn't my first contest. I haven't even made it into the final in some of them, I wouldn't throw a fit if Scherzland came last.
Speaking of finishes, I do hope 'Call Me Maybe' finishes first. Fantastic song heart.gif

I'm struggling to see past an Ashton victory now as it just seems to be in contention for about 10 people's 12 points slot, if I were to do odds then their entry would be pretty much evens.

To be honest I'm kind of disappointed too, primarily as at the beginning this looked like the first contest in a while where there were genuinely about 10 contenders... although at least there's still about 9 tracks in contention for 2nd. biggrin.gif

Off topic but I thought Tone Damli was Ashley Tisdale in Phil's avatar, only to realize now it isn't. Should've known better drama.gif

Also, is it just me or a part of the song sounds like David Guetta's When Love Takes Over starting at 2:26.

This is why I think they're walking it. How often do people venture purposely into somebody's national thread to say how great their entry is during the voting stage. Very rarely, and they're clearly all handing it a 12 on a plate along with the people who said similar things about it in a number of other threads...Looks like it's on course to comfortably be our most successful winner in a while. Although we differ in that I'd be quite happy with that outcome!

The other songs that are at the top of people's odds don't even have a tenth of the buzz surrounding them or general vocal support, so I just don't see how they can overcome Look Back, unless their supporters are all keeping deathly silent! Odds are so much easier to call the closer we get to the results, we're not allowed to give away our exact points but most people basically reveal their 12 in a roundabout way, either during the semi results or by waltzing into somebody's national thread to gush over their entry!

Oh I'm not specifically against an Ashton victory (although the track isn't totally to my taste, I guess that much would be obvious to all!), it's more that I was hoping for a close and exciting results thread.

I agree with you, it would take all the silent voters (like me!) to all love the same track for anything to stand a chance - and that's clearly very unlikely indeed.

And there's nothing to say that the silent voters won't all be loving Look Back too laugh.gif I'm seeing a Sheelah situation here, The Last Time won exactly a year ago by basically appealing massively to those that loved it. Most of the people that voted for it (which was around two thirds of the voters, so a clear majority) placed it in their top three, it picked up very few 1's and 2's in comparisons to 18's, 15's and 12's, which was the voting system at the time.

Based on the overwhelming vocal support that it's attracted thus far, I can see Look Back appearing in the top three or thereabouts of nearly everyone that decides to vote for it - which by the sounds of it could be most people here!

It was interesting when I hosted BJSC and most people made an early prediction for Le Kid 'America' to dominate the entire contest yet it didn't come anywhere near close.

I do wonder if all this hype around 'Look Back' will lead to an anti climax and it actually does end up coming 2nd behind another track that hasn't had as much vocal support but is generally popular with the vast majority of voters. ohmy.gif

I'm still not expecting to win at all. The only reason it's at 1/3 in my odds is that it does have a large amount of vocal support (far more than any of my 40 previous entries, quite possibly combined) and the momentum its gained thanks to people falling in love with a track I adore and sheer speculation that it won SF1. That alone seems to be driving most of the songs momentum.

Finally listened to 'Look Back' to see what the hype was all about. Very overrated. 'Call Me Maybe' is far superior in terms of fempop in this contest. I think it's because the earlier odds had it at/near the top and people have been influenced by those odds.

I'm not going to do a set of odds, but I think it will be inbetween Fljotavik, FSR Rontvia, Ramyrnia and Syndare for the win! biggrin.gif

I personally see it as Ashton, FSR Rontvia, Ramrynia and Fljótavík as the contenders. Me for the obvious reasons, You because Flares is incredible, Ramrynia for being the early favourite and the sheer number of people that wanted the song and Fljótavík for entering a great track that actually has cross over appeal to the pure pop fans (and we all know that indiepop does well).

I've not been influenced by anybody's odds when estimating how well Look Back will do, moreso the 15 or so people who like it so much that they've been screaming it from the rooftops across the forum. 150+ points potentially bagged right there without even taking the other 30 odd voting countries into account.

Lol, being serious for a second. I really hate hype for this reason. Mind you last time my track was labelled overrated it was done so unfairly as only 3 people actually said they through it was good. Me, Rich and Tyron. I have no problem with people not liking my track as much as others. I only care that I (hopefully) introduced a great song by a fantastic artist to someone. That's the reasoning behind all my entries and will always be.

People haven't been influenced by the odds or Call Me Maybe would still be on top, I think they are driven by the belief that Look Back is the song that kicked SF1's ass. In which case, statistically the song that won SF1 by that amount would be favourite to walk the whole thing.

...and 13 points less than what 'Riverside' collected when I won BJSC. ohmy.gif I know there are a few more countries taking part this month but 144 points in SF1 is still incredible regardless. ohmy.gif

144 points is fantastic and I understand why it is the favourite! However, remember the SF2 winner still got 133 (something like that) which is too far off - that could have been a number of countries - possibly Syndare or Fljotavik (or Ramrynia I guess, but I don't think it'd manage to do that well) based on the odds.

Saying that, I do think Ashton is the favourite with FSR Rontvia, Numayania, Syndare, Fljotavik and Ramrynia (according to others' odds) chasing behind as may people have said smile.gif

Unless I've misunderstood you, I don't think that's quite how odds work. I don't think Fljotavik will regard 'Look Back' as their personal fave entry. Possibly Syndare as well. FSR Rontvia and Numayania are guaranteed 12s though I predict.

BJSC V: 01: Eledan - t.A.T.u - Gomenasai - 114 [SF1 // 155] (The single semi/10AQ's/Final system was vastly different back then. All 10AQ's voted in the semi so the points were more concentrated than in the final, hence the 41point drop)

BJSC XVII: 02: M.K.L - Livvi Franc – Now I’m That Bitch [Nevins Rhythmic Remix] – 179 [SF2: 1 // 152] (Beaten by Robots In Love//FSR Rontvia who won SF1)

My votes are being delayed for ONE reason and it's related to ASHTON.

Look Back was rubbish at first listen and then it grew hence I gave it some points in the semi. And then it got overshadowed by other tracks once the final began with quality tracks in Semi 2. Finally at this point, it's growing too fast on me that I'm confused on how to allocate points or not on the track as I'm afraid that it might grow off me again. drama.gif What to do..

It's growing too fast and growing off you? unsure.gif Not entirely sure what you mean there.

I say just give it the 12 kink.gif I do have a vested interest though so I may be slightly bias.

I can't see anything other than Ashton being #1 now with the hype. It's charted in some personal charts already and has been receiving praise at Ashton's thread AND further discussion of it in the Odds and Final thread further boosts it. Also can't see anything else other than Ramrynia being #2 as well. Around 3-4 people (I think?) were wanting to send that song but missed out. Plus I can see the pop voters voting for the song with heavy points.

A lot of votes might go like:

12 Ashton/Ramrynia
10 Ramrynia/Ashton

Unless as Rich says... people have been dead silent for the majority of the time and keeping their favourites sealed until the final results.

Eyes likes this post.

I've been wondering about Tone. I still think she's in with a very good chance, but I'd be surprised if she ran away with it Sober-style, particularly as there ARE so many other contenders. When Loreen won, there were really only two other contenders for the top, Red Hot and Call My Name. It was an excellent contest, but we were so dry of potential winners, at least two of the songs we were predicting to easily come top 10 flopped on their arses majorly because they had no vocal support behind them. I remember, I was one of them cry.gif, the other main one being Love Struck, who everyone was predicting to take up the top 4 with the other 3. I can't see any of this month's contenders flopping in the same way, all of them have some form of support behind them.

Here I can imagine Tone taking it, she's still the favourite, but I can just as easily see 6 or 7 others potentially at the top, SoSo, Foxes, Carly, Prance Faris, Dia, The Storm, even Nightwish. (those 7 are in the order of what I'm expecting)

As an aside, what's happened to Kopecka? I wouldn't mind seeing them dark horse it either, and they're perfectly capable of making it to the top 10 I think.

Another interesting note on the BJ Personal Multichart..

55 (60) 171 Prance Faris - Flares (73-60-55)
67 (**) 138 Tone Damli - Look Back (67)
71 (**) 130 Foxes - Youth (71)
72 (65) 130 Le Kid - Human Behaviour (65-72)

Dark horse being Le Kid is a possibility.

I've been quietly thinking this for a while now! I think this is another Jody scenario - everyone insists it's a mid-table or low top ten at best, but it goes on to outperform the predictions. I had thought it was a potential winner when I confirmed it, but since the start of the contest it seems to have been written off. I certainly think top five is still possible though!

Posted by: gooddelta 9th February 2012, 12:23 AM

I'd like to see you get a comfortable top ten, it's a pretty great remix of a great cover and the odds for it have been a bit underwhelming so far. I've been predicting between 7th-9th in all of my odds and I still think that this is quite possible!

A potential winner might be stretching it though, it's not as 'in your face' as the usual sort of Scandipop that does well here...it didn't even hit me until the second listen and I'm a huge Lena AND Scandipop fan!

Posted by: Veriloquy 9th February 2012, 12:37 AM

If anything I thought it might have been a little TOO in-your-face! The production's quite similar to Popular in the chorus, I'd thought it would draw the same sorts of haters that that did...

Niiiice odds from Hendinia, I've resigned myself to another 6th place now a la Eric Amarillo but I'd LOVE to see Flares sneak into the top five. Five certain other songs seem to have a lot of support on the forum though...although Flares isn't without its fans! Tough final, so many great songs at the very top end of quality!
