Call Me Loop - Walls

I decided to enter BJSC on the deadline day for this contest, with a last-minute choice of country name as well as song. I recognised the artist’s name Call Me Loop from previous trawls through New Music Friday, and as soon as her song came up this time, the clean production jumped out of the speakers enough to convince me to go with it. Only later I realised that she had been entered to BJSC five times before, with best finishes of 5th and 7th in 2020 and 2018 - fortunately she passed veto. The lyrical premise is essentially the same as for Rita Ora - Let You Love Me.

My first BJSC adventure took the song narrowly through an alt-heavy semi to a final place of 26th, which I was happy with. The vast majority of my points sent and received in the final came from different nations, a sign that this entry resided at the poppier end of my tastes. I stand by it though and it reached #20 in my personal chart.

LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER - Time Is Not A Healer It’s A Fuel For Resentment

I’d been reluctant to make my first entry something I’d already charted, but for my second BJSC I took the song which had convinced me to start posting my personal chart before 2022 was over, with it topping my inaugural chart and returning to the top after a 3-week gap. Another NMF discovery, the hooks of this hit me before I’d registered THAT 10-word title, and it had an endearing DIY aesthetic with a semblance of a message beneath the cascade of self-played synths. If I could make vaguely marketable music, I’d aspire that it wouldn’t sound a million miles from this. LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER appear to be a one-man operation and the song came with a fittingly low-budget music video.

Another close call in the semis kept the 100% qualifying streak alive, then it strung together enough points in the final to set a new personal best of 23rd place, albeit from an entirely different voter base to the nations who had pointed Call Me Loop in the previous contest. The song returned to #1 in my personal chart on another two occasions and amassed 13 weeks in my top 3.

Lanterns On The Lake - The Likes Of Us

My third entry was another NMF discovery, the comeback single from alt-rock band Lanterns On The Lake who, unbeknown to me at the time, had been nominated for the 2020 Mercury Prize. Within a couple of listens I was floored by the defiant build through the pre-choruses to the climatic chorus, with brooding guitar backing and Florence-like vocal delivery backing up the song’s message.

My first DNQ had to happen sometime, but this came as a surprise to me since the song had been well-received in the semi listen-through. Perhaps the semi wasn’t well suited to the song, although maybe the tune didn’t quite have that extra spark to appeal to a wider audience, which I would say is the one shortcoming of the band’s subsequent singles too. I still feel that it could have qualified in different circumstances, and gave it a 4-week run at #2 on my personal chart.

I first discovered this song on an alt playlist on Spotify and was drawn in by Sølv‘s vocals over dreamlike minimal synths. Self-written and produced, the self-directed music video enhances the vibe.

Unlike my first two entries, this qualified comfortably, but didn’t quite maintain the same trajectory after that and wound up as my lowest finish in a final to date. Perhaps for some the aesthetic magic wore off a little after a few listens - still, it united some of the voters from my first two entries as well as some new ones. MRD - Last Dance

This was my first entry which I discovered via another Buzzjack member. I had been drawn to Norwegian producer MRD’s song Midsommar which infused deep male vocals with technicolour synth and guitar riffs after it had appeared in a few personal charts. However it was Bré’s new music playlist which led me to check out the other songs on the same EP, and this the final track burst to my attention with layers of multiple synth riffs and a danceable production - it just seemed to have single potential. On the day I submitted the entry, I realised a video had been uploaded which also reduced the song down to less than 4 minutes, which I thought wouldn’t harm its crossover appeal.

And just like that, a BJSC medal winner was born - appropriately enough an actual bronze for Bronzil! I’m still delighted that it found many fans across the genres - it even made it into the Buzzjack multichart at #72. It spent 5 weeks at #1 on my own personal chart, eclipsing the 4 weeks of my BJSC 152 entry which was previously my highest finisher in 23rd. This brings me up to date!

After defying a full house of DNQ predictions to qualify albeit with just 7 voters, a creditable performance in the final - again with a high average of almost 10 points from those who voted for it - saw it miss out on a top 20 spot only by a tiebreak. Seems most people either didn't care for it or liked it a lot! It's certainly my favourite song of the moment, now on its 3rd week at #1 on my personal chart, and I'm delighted it found a few more fans.

Once again treading the precarious line between alt-rock and pop in the hope that not too many will die of mid in between, it's another one I found on an indie Spotify playlist. The title track from 26 year-old New York singer-songwriter Samia's second album, it starts gently then gradually pushes up the intensity, fuelled by an absolute earworm of a chorus.

In complete contrast to the previous month, a full house of qualifier predictions was followed by a DNQ result - and this despite receiving 11 voters compared to the 7 for Picture Parlour, due to their average vote being more than 60% lower. Maybe the pop-leaning indie fell too far between two stools, or was the wrong choice for this contest with its subtle charm out of place alongside the multiple off-the-wall bangers which opened semi 2, or maybe the song just wasn't strong enough. Well I liked it anyway, and gave it a week at #1 on my personal chart.

ACRAZE & Aviella - In A Dream

Playing it a bit safer this month, with the first artist I've entered not only to have had a Top 100 hit, but a Top 10 hit - and within the last couple of years at that. I didn't particularly rate ACRAZE's remake of the Cherish hit, but this cover of Rockell's late 90s song is much more my sort of thing with the smooth vocals and trancey production.

Well it went better than I could have imagined, finishing just two points away from matching the bronze finish of MRD, and six points off silver! A new personal best of of 35 voters was the most for any song in the final too, with all 15 different point scores coming in at least once. I'm glad the pop/dance crossover worked, and the song will complete a 13-week climb to #1 in my personal chart tomorrow!

I do like to go from one extreme to another. At least this one qualified and actually got a reasonable number of voters in the final, but a basement finish on 60 points - fewer than the number who voted altogether, and a record low for BJSC finals this year - tells its own story. It appears this had just enough novelty value to muster its way through the semi before its support evaporated somewhat. Still, nothing ventured and all that, though perhaps #3 in my personal chart does a disservice to many other songs in that chart, some of which could have taken its place here if I'd decided to stick with a more established artist after ACRAZE did so well. On a positive note, points being given to and received from each other ever-present BJSC nation in 2023 is still possible, with one nation remaining on either side!

Metric - Days Of Oblivion

A second year of all things Bronzil begins with possibly my favourite song from the last quarter of 2023. Metric have been entered four times previously, doing quite well each time, and as if that hadn't created enough "it's good but I prefer [song X] by them" potential, they since had a little song called 'Doomscroller' which made it to #51 on its debut in last year's Record of the Decade - so basically this one's on a bit of a hiding to nothing, unless it's truly in epic territory - fortunately I think it is!

Metric's 100% strike rate of top 20 hits in BJSC just about stretches to a 5th contest, with a very pleasing six medals coming mostly from outside what we might call the alt bloc - who largely lived up to the not-as-good-as-'Doomscroller' allusions above (just imagine how many 18s that could have received if it had been entered in 2022). Glad to see this 5-week #1 from my currently-dormant personal chart go down well anyway, starting my second year in a very similar (but unique!) position to how my first year ended, which included an EOY position of 17th... oops spoilers

Time for my first retro entry, and the second act I've sent to BJSC to have had any UK Top 100 singles - 26 of them in fact - though this one from 1982 predates all of them, and as with ACRAZE's chart hit I can take or leave most of those, but absolutely love the charging guitars, synths, vocals and intra-band chemistry here.

Nur Jaber is billed as the lead artist on 'Fall To Pieces' on most platforms (and on the cover art of the EP it's part of), I'm not sure why the credits are flipped over on Spotify. iTunes actually has it both ways with the EP as a whole billing Luca first as well but the individual songs having Nur first. It has always been like that so not a recent switch!

Vintage Culture - Find A Way

The first song I've sent that was actually released in 2024 is from Brazilian producer Vintage Culture. It was instant for me when I heard it on NMF and I wasn't surprised to see it in Dance Track of the Week where it came within a few hours of a win, but ended up losing to Nero via a tiebreak (although their song's also a banger so no shame in that!)
