Has anyone had any songs that have fell from the top spot but returned at some point?
I thought I'd create this topic as my current #1 (Leona Lewis - BIT/FITS) has returned to #1 after spending three consecutive weeks at #1 and then being knocked off the top spot by Estelle.
Here's its chart run to date:
Leona Lewis - Better In Time/Footprints In The Sand [02-02-01-01-01-02-01]
Just the one, Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys. It returned to no.1 twice after being knocked off for a week by Reverend & The Makers, then a further 2 weeks by Klaxons
CR: 4-2-{1}-{1}-2-{1}-2-2-{1}-{1}-{1}-3-4-7-8-9
Loads, including my current No.1 Basia Bulat - In The Night that went 15-2-1-2-1
I've had 4:
Beautiful Liar - Beyonce and Shakira (35, 23, 11, 4, 4, 5, 3, 1, 2, 1, 1 3, 5, 6, 8, 8, 13, 12, 15, 15, 19, 32, 34, 40) {24 wks}
All Good Things (Come To An End) (37, 29, 17, 11, 4, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 5, 4, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 8, 17, 18, 16, 19, 25, 31, 33, 33, 35, 37) {31 wks}
Say It Right (38, 34, 28, 15, 4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 3, 7, 8, 7, 9, 7, 6, 7, 11, 11, 13, 16, 22, 29, 33, 36, 37, 39) {33 wks}
I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - Scissor Sisters (1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 4, 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 8, 11, 12, 13, 13, 13, 13, 17, 20, 24, 30, 33, 37, 38) {27 wks}
Beautiful Liar and Say It Right were at the same time so SIR had it's 8 week run, followed by 1 week by BL, then SIR had another week followed by BL's 2 week run
I havent had any yet but I ALMOST had 'Alphabeat - Fascination go back to the top! And Cascada - What Do You Want From Me!
Alphabeat - Fascination [1-3-4-7-8-10-4-2-3-4] (STILL in my chart! so STILL has a chance!)
&
Cascada - What Do You Want From Me [1-1-2-3-5-5-7-2] (STILL in my chart! so STILL has a chance!)
NEVER say NEVER! lol
Hmm... I think only 'Mambo' by Helena Paparizou has done this for me.
I hate it, I try to avoid it all the time I've had this happen twice, once in 2006 with Jamelia's Beware Of The Dog & this year with Sugababes Denial.
Only 'Valerie' has done this for me:
Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse – Valerie – [1-2-1-1-1-2-3-5-6-10-11-13-13-15-18-17-17-14-20-25-29]
It was #1 in my first charted and dropped the next week, then I realised I couldn't let it drop straight away and it spent 3 more weeks on top.
I think I can see two more songs to be added to my list soon, I can see Estelle and Mariah having chart runs that are a bit [1-2-1-2-1] over the next few weeks.
I try and avoid it if I can, only 2 tracks went back to #1, both in 2005
Stereophones - Dakota
Sugababes - Push The Button
Girls Aloud - Call The Shots
Chris Brown - With You
Mika – Grace Kelly (1-1-1-2-1-1-4-9-12-13-15-23-28-**(7)-21-37) [14] - Interrupted by Kelis - Lil Star
Maroon 5 – Makes Me Wonder (2-1-1-1-4-1-2-2-7-10-11-25-33-31-27-39) [16] - Interrupted by Mika - Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)
Sugababes – Change (1-4-5-5-7-5-4-6-3-2-1-3-6-19-20-23-28-27-31-34-37) [21] - Interrupted by Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love (6 wks) and Rihanna - Hate That I Love You (3 wks).

Only 1 - Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancin, back in 2006. It had 3 weeks then 4 weeks at number 1 and was seperated by a week by Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars!
I'm curious, why do some of you try to avoid it happening?
It only happened once in my personal chart: Britney Spears - Piece Of Me did it recently... its chart run so far...
Piece Of Me (1-1-1-2-1-1-1-1-2-4-4-6-4-7-10-13-11-)
Some of the no.1 runs on this thread are really long!
Booty Luv- Some Kinda Rush- [1-1-2-2-1-1-2-1-6-9-18-36-44-63]
Thats the only song to gain no.1 again, and they did it twice. The first time they fell off they were interrupted by Rihanna- Don't Stop The Music and Sugababes- Change, the 2nd time they were interrupted by Filo and Peri- Anthem. Most of my number ones fall really fast like 1-4-16 but then hang around a bit
the funniest ones though for me have to be in 2004 when Corrs' Summer Sunshine got to No.1, then the following week was knocked off by Julie & Ludwig's On Again...Off Again. The week after, The Corrs went back to No.1 and then the week after that Julie & Ludwig climbed back to No.1! talk about indecisive!
thing is...if you get bored of the song at No.1 all of a sudden and there are no new songs out to replace it, what other choice do you have than to put an old song back at the top
Thats what happend with me with Denial
Just six.
1998 Puff Daddy & The Family - It's All About The Benjamins (returned twice) 1-6-3-1-2-1
1998 Puff Daddy feat Jimmy Page - Come With Me (returned twice) 1-5-10-6-1-5-2-1
2000 Jennifer Lopez - Feelin' So Good 1-5-1
2001 Outkast - B.O.B. 1-5-6-14-2-1
2004 Metallica - Frantic (returned twice) 1-3-4-4-1-3-1
2004 Metallica - St. Anger 1-25-17-20-6-9-2-1
I have had a few:
2005 Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For 1-2-1-2-2-5-6-9-9
2005 The Killers - Somebody Told Me 1-3-4-3-1-5-7-8-10-9-9
2005 Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. 1-1-2-1-1-2-2-3-1-1-4-8
2005 Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot 9-5-1-3-2-3-1-1-1-4
2005 Kate Bush - King of the Mountain 1-1-1-4-1-1-3-4-5-4-5-7
2006 Kasabian - Empire 8-1-1-2-1-1-5-6
2006 Juliette & the Licks - Hot Kiss 4-1-1-2-1-1-1-2-2-4-10-10
2007 White Stripes - Icky Thump 1-2-3-1-1-5
2007 Liars - Plaster Casts of Everything 3-2-1-1-3-1-2-3-5-8
I have also had three #1s who re-entered and went to the top during separate chart runs
2005 Kasabian - Club Foot 5-5-4-6-7-7-10-x-x-x-x-1-1-1-3-2-5-5-6-6-8-10-x-x-10-1-4-5-5-6-8
2005 White Stripes - Blue Orchid 1-1-1-2-3-7-10-10-x-x-1-3-7-10
2006 Richard Ashcroft - 6-8-6-1-1-1-4-3-4-6-9-4R[8]-1-3-4-6-9
It's only happened to me once with "About You Now" from Sugababes. But that's only because I got bored of Gimme More from Britney which took the number one from them
It's only happened to Rihanna - Umbrella and Britney Spears - Gimme More for me so far.
I've had quite a few Off the top of my head...
Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing [1 week, 1 week off, 6 weeks on; interrupted by Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars]
Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry [2 weeks, 2006 Xmas #1; dropped out of chart and returned to #1 in July 2007]
Kelis - Lil' Star [3 weeks, 2 weeks off, 1 week on; interrupted by Nelly Furtado - Say It Right]
Rihanna - Umbrella [5 weeks on, 3 weeks off, 1 week on; interrupted by Guri Schanke - Ven a Bailar Conmigo for 1 week and Serebro - Song #1 for 2 weeks]
M.I.A. - Paper Planes [1 week in July 2007, stayed in top 10 until returned to #1 for 1 week in March 2008]
Sugababes - Change [1 week in November 2007, 1 week off, 4 weeks on, 2007 Xmas #1; interrupted by Jordin Sparks - Tattoo]
I'll probably remember more soon
Rihanna - Disturbia
2 weeks on, 4 weeks off, 3 weeks on - interupted by The Automatic, Pussycat Dolls and Katy Perry
It's only happened twice since my charts inception 9 years ago, the last time was for- Roger Sanchez's "Another Chance" - which had just 1 week in pole position on 1st July 2001, before falling behind Elbow ("Powder Blue") and The Avalanches ("Frontier Psychiatrist") for 3 weeks and then returning on 29th July for 2 further weeks..
Only three songs have gone to #1 twice
Jennifer Lopez- Do It Well (8-5-4-1-2-2-1-2-2-3-3-4-6-7-8-10) My chart was only top 10 back then
The Saturdays- Just Can't Get Enough (1-1-1-2-1-2-4-9) Still charting
Lady Gaga- Poker Face (8-5-3-3-2-2-1-3-1-1-1) Still charting
Only once! And it was my second number one over 5 years ago! Franz Ferdinand 'Take Me Out' spend two weeks at the top before being knocked off for two weeks by LostProphets 'Last Train Home'.
I do tend to not make it happen though. I tend to feel that if it does the song inbetween didn't really deserve to be number one in the first place...
oh my god I knew it had happened a lot in my chart over the ten years but I never thought the list was this big...these songs all had 2 or more stints at the top of my chart:
Eiffel 65-Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Ann Lee-Two Times
The Corrs-No Frontiers
ATB-My Dream
Kim Lukas-All I Really Want
Alice Deejay-Will I Ever
Spiller feat Sophie Ellis-Bextor-Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)
Thrillseekers feat Sheryl Deane-Synaesthesia
Fragma feat Maria Rubia-Everytime You Need Me
Caroldene-Time Is A Healer
Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil’ Kim-Lady Marmalade
N-Trance-Set You Free 2001
Ian Van Dahl-Will I?
Shakira-Underneath Your Clothes
ATC-Around The World (La La La La La)
Delta Goodrem-Born To Try
Birgitta-Open Your Heart
Delta Goodrem-Innocent Eyes
Motorcycle-As The Rush Comes
Sarah McLachlan-Fallen
Sarah McLachlan-World On Fire
The Corrs-Summer Sunshine
Julie & Ludwig-On Again…Off Again
Missy Higgins-Ten Days
James Blunt-You’re Beautiful
Jo O’Meara-What Hurts The Most
Madonna-Hung Up
Nerina Pallot-Everybody’s Gone To War
All Saints-Rock Steady
Take That-Shine
Scooch-Flying The Flag (For You)
Sara Bareilles-Love Song
Basia Bulat-In The Night
Charlotte Perrelli-Hero
Leona Lewis-Run
Taylor Swift-Love Story
the reason for these yo-yoing runs mostly happens when I have two songs that I love equally tussling for No.1...
I wouldn't rule out Alexander Rybak's Fairytale to join this list in due course this is the 'Eurovision effect' where I hear songs before ESC, love them, then they fall down and then rise up again in May around the time of the contest
the reason it's so prone to happening in my chart too is because of my instant charting of everything...a lot of these songs I charted as 'album tracks' and then later on they get a proper release and return to the top as a single
All of the following have returned to my number 1 spot since my chart started beginning of last year...
1st: OneRepublic - Say (All I Need) [3-2-1-3-3-4-4-5-1-9-12-11-14-19-22-21-22-24-27-31-32-37-40]- 23 Weeks
2nd: Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around Me [3-1-2-5-8-5-1-4-11-19-25-35] - 12 Weeks
3rd: Britney Spears - Womanizer [2-1-1-1-1-1-2-1-3-4-8-13-15-12-14-21-24-23-26-29-37] - 21 Weeks
So looks like only three... SO FAR
Leona Lewis - Run
The Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough
often I'll return a song to No.1 just to flush it out of my system and then it goes into freefall in the following weeks
There're no cases this year so far. But Alexander Rybak may get his 8th (already non-consecutive) week at number one very soon again
