You’ll See deserves to make this album.

I would argue Jump and Get Together too smile.gif

Maybe even rain lol smile.gif

Love the artwork !!! A massive shame that the IC continues to usually sell more than this.

It is my go to greatest hits collection because it spans more decades but there are some GLARING omissions for sure, such as Get Together! Criminal.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 21st July 2020, 04:36 PM

Also the artwork for this album is INCREDIBLE and one of her best ever. It is instantly iconic.

Should Have Been Bigger: Madonna’s “Revolver”

QUOTE
In this franchise, we look back on songs that deserved a little more love and attention.

I have a lot of issues with Celebration, Madonna’s 2009 greatest hits compilation (not using single edits, for starters), but “Revolver” isn’t one of them. A gritty banger with the kind of chorus that lodges permanently in your brain, the Lil Wayne-assisted anthem ranks as one of the Queen of Pop’s better singles from the late ’00s. “I’m a sex pistol, my love should be illegal,” Madonna declares in the first verse. “Real deal, baby, I’m no counterfeit.” The bad/iconic metaphors continue until we reach the knock-out chorus: “My love’s a revolver, my sex is a killer — do you wanna die happy?”

In a perfect world, the reverse-aging 62-year-old would have released “Revolver” as the project’s lead single instead of the tepid title track. But “Revolver” had the misfortune of leaking months in advance and, by the time it did get rolled out, momentum was non-existent. And then Warner’s decision not to film a video was the final nail in its coffin. As a result, “Revolver” failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at a frankly unacceptable number 130 in the UK. The song did have considerably more success, however, in the clubs.

Madonna handpicked a group of A-List producers to remix “Revolver” including David Guetta, Paul Van Dyk and Tracy Young. They did such a good job that “Revolver” won a Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Interestingly, “Revolver” gained notoriety again in 2012 when Madonna performed it on her MDNA World Tour holding a a variety of weapons. It sparked a backlash and superstar quickly issued an apology. “I do not condone violence or the use of guns,” she said in an open letter and then explained that she was taking aim (no pun intended) at the church.

What are your thoughts on 'Revolver'? Top gun or misfire?

I truly love this album is really fantastic. I love the song Celebrating. It's really amazing.

Posted by: vibe 31st October 2020, 06:09 PM

I’m a huge fan of revolver . Love the live version

Posted by: dandy* 31st October 2020, 06:54 PM

Revolver is about as much of a bop as Shoo-be-doo

Posted by: Alberto! 31st October 2020, 10:03 PM

It's a nice Madonna track, when her autotuning was something she was still only doing randomly (I found it a bit grating in some songs of Madame X), great performance on tour, but pretty happy this wasn't a defining hit.

The track listing order is not my fav.

I prob would have preferred chronological listing.

Starting cd2 with a cut into of dress you up bugs me .

Posted by: ElectroPaul 1st November 2020, 02:56 PM

Two cds were never going to be enough i just wish that Deeper and Deeper and Give It 2 Me made the cut.

Posted by: slowdown73 5th November 2020, 04:38 PM

This was a better greatest hits set than GHV2. However, revolver wasn’t a very good track!

Posted by: dandy* 5th November 2020, 04:59 PM

For an album that has some of the best pop songs ever on it, I absolutely never listen to it as the track listing on the 2CD is pretty awful. The single disc version is much better although I don't think that Lucky Star or Dress You Up particularly belong on it.

Posted by: spiceboy 6th November 2020, 09:46 PM

The tracklisting for this is awful tbh, it doesn't flow and it's weird. Starting CD2 with Dress you up wtf? I think chronological order ala The Immaculate Collection would have worked better, perhaps with each of the new songs at the end of each CD.

Tbh a few of the songs sound out of place on the album full stop like Dress you up, Everybody and Burning up shouldn't have made the tracklist at all, not when she has so many iconic songs.

This is how I would probably have tracklisted it

CD1
1. Holiday
2. Lucky star
3. Borderline
4. Like a virgin
5. Material girl
5. Crazy for you
6. Into the groove
7. Who's that girl (not it's biggest fan but a #1 that deserves a place on a GH I guess)
8. Live to tell
9. Papa don't preach
10. Open your heart
11. True blue
12. La Isla Bonita
13. Like a prayer
14. Express yourself
15. Cherish
16. Oh father
17. Vogue
18. Justify my love
19. Celebration [New track]
20. Everybody (if she really wanted it on there, it's not iconic enough to start the album with)

CD2
1. Erotica
2. Deeper and deeper
3. I'll remember
4. Secret
5. Bedtime story
6. You'll see
7. Frozen
8. Ray of light
9. The power of goodbye
10. Beautiful stranger
11. Music
12. Don't tell me
13. Die another day
14. American life
15. Hollywood
16. Hung up
17. Sorry
18. 4 minutes
19. Give it 2 me
20. Revolver

I have gone with tracks I think are more iconic not my personal favourites (I can't abide Lucky Star or 4 minutes and I adore Nothing really matters and American pie for example).

the album cover is SENSATIONAL though!

Who’s that Girl was released after the true blue album.

An switch it then 😂 it doesn’t sound good enough to have come after the masterpiece that is True Blur and just before the other masterpiece that is Like a prayer

I feel that with chronological order it takes you on a journey while the way it is, Madonna has so many different styles it’s kind of disjointed. I forgot Dont cry for me Argentina that could make an appearance too.

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th November 2020, 06:53 PM

This collection was my first introduction to a lot of Madonna's back catalogue so I have a lot of fond memories of it and I'm so used to the flow of the tracking list, even though I can see why others would take issue with it. I actually love 'Dress You Up' starting CD 2 - that intro really struck a cord with me on first listen!

Some bizarre omissions on here though. I always found it particularly strange that 'Miles Away' was here in place of 'Give It 2 Me'.

The artwork is fantastic, one of my favourites.

Can't say I agree with that article at all. Calling the song 'Celebration' tepid?! I think I sort of liked the song when I was 12 but it just gets worse as time goes on. The chorus is pretty diabolical and the whole thing is just so beneath Madonna.

Posted by: vibe 8th November 2020, 07:27 PM

True Blue robbed again and not on the album!!

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 8th November 2020, 07:35 PM

I also don't have too much of a major issue with the tracklisting even though I can see some parts of it are jarring. It's also my go-to compilation album because it features a lot more of her discogrpahy than her others do. As the title suggests, it's a great explosion of celebrations as it opens and for a good 14 or so tracks, it doesn't let up with that celebration! In fact 'Secret' is probably the only song on the first disc that isn't an overt celebration of some sort - for that reason I can see why they have gone for this order.

Posted by: Liam.k. 9th November 2020, 03:43 AM

I'd say these were all significant enough hits to appear on the album:

Angel
True Blue
Causing a Commotion
Hanky Panky
This Used to Be My Playground
Deeper & Deeper
Rain
I'll Remember
You'll See
Don't Cry For Me Argentina
The Power of Goodbye
American Pie
American Life
Give It 2 Me

If you were to have a third disc with all those, I'd also add these to take it up to 18 tracks:

Oh Father
Rescue Me
Nothing Really Matters
What It Feels Like for a Girl

Then I'd say 'Miles Away' wasn't significant enough to have been on the album, 'Everybody' and 'Burning Up' are there merely for the fact of them being her first two singles and I'd rather 'Revolver' just didn't happen, so I'd take them off and include these fan favourites:

Bedtime Story
Human Nature
Get Together
Jump

Vinyl reissue has finally gone up on Madonna’s UK store! https://shopuk.madonna.com/products/celebration-4lp

Posted by: Liam.k. 21st February 2024, 11:32 AM

I was starting to wonder what was happening with this! I think I'll hold off buy this for a while, £54 is good value for four vinyl but it's a bit too much for me to spend right now.

Posted by: -Jay- 21st February 2024, 11:48 AM

Same for me! I hope it becomes available on Amazon/HMV and that it’s not too limited.

Posted by: HausofKubrick 21st February 2024, 12:45 PM

Definitely going to get but going to wait for Amazon/HMV!

Posted by: -Jay- 23rd February 2024, 01:18 AM

Now available to pre-order on HMV! Still no sign of Amazon UK going live with it.

Posted by: dandy* 23rd February 2024, 08:27 AM

I am oddly not fussed about this. The package doesn’t look that special really and the format emphasises the odd ordering of the tracks

#29 in the midweeks! Unsure if this is just from the vinyl release or whether the streams have been allocated to this collection instead of Finally Enough Love.

Posted by: HausofKubrick 4th March 2024, 05:13 PM

Oooh!!! (I still need to get hold of the vinyl)

Because this is probably the best selling now, have streams automatically transferred to this again? I think it's time it did because ain't no-one listening to those remixes still :')

Posted by: vibe 4th March 2024, 07:31 PM

29 is great !!!

Agree - this is definitely the better strategy from here on it. They've done their job manufacturing a decent run for Finally Enough Love but now it's time for a true greatest hits to take over again

Posted by: Padamic Tension 4th March 2024, 09:16 PM

I was wondering why it was back in the top 30 but now i know its had a vinyl release it makes more sense.

Labels can also choose which compilation gets the streams allocated to it which is what has happened with 'Finally Enough Love' as 'The Immaculate Collection' has long since been the best selling (currently #69 on the download chart).

I'd welcome 'Celebration' getting the streams from this point on though; as mentioned, 'Finally Enough Love' has achieved a very respectable chart run and a Gold certification, plus it would mean 'Celebration' would pass one million chart sales in three years or so.

Posted by: JLJ 8th March 2024, 06:03 PM

Re-enters the top 100 this week at #79.

Hopefully this does now get the streams ahead of Finally Enough Love as I imagine Celebration is actually what people are steaming anyways rather than the remixes.

I think if the label were to give this the streams it’ll set up a new healthy chart run and rack those weeks up in no time.

'Finally Enough Love' is #90 on the streaming chart so no such luck, I'm afraid!

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th March 2024, 09:31 PM

#11 on the sales chart and #6 on vinyl. I imagine it passed 2k which is pretty good going considering the vinyl is like £55. Would have been Top 40 if it had streams added to it.

cry.gif I wish they’d revert back to Celebration as the album that represents her hits being streamed.

^ they so should now

Posted by: pippa 10th March 2024, 03:57 PM

Give the allocations to Celebration as The Immaculate Collection has had a good run.

Posted by: -Jay- 5th May 2024, 02:44 PM

I got the vinyl a couple of weeks ago! So expensive but I just had to have it.
