Music Week | Best Selling Singles: August 2008
This is such an amazing thread - thanks Liam!!!
What on earth made Angel re-chart in 95 /96?
Angel
10-05-06-08-16-30-36-52-71 (first entry: 21/09/85) 9w
82 (second entry: 30/11/95) 1w
83-97 (third entry: 04/01/96) 2w
You're very welcome! The only reason I can think of as to why Angel re-entered was because of Something to Remember. It wasn't on the album, but it could have been performed or something?
EDIT: Sorry, it was a typo - it should be 1985/6 not 1995/6!
168. (126) Masterpiece
Thanks for doing this, I have a lot of stuff I could add to this if you like ?
Like weekly sales from MW, End Of Year charts etc. I need to dig them out tho.
Would you be interested in added digital charts ? I'm not saying you should you don't have too. It's just an idea.
Anyway here's some info for you:

Thanks SweetCandy! Perhaps if I added the highest certification for each song underneath it's chart run, I could add download and airplay charts. And any sales info you find, please feel free to post! I'll add her positions on the Best Selling Act of Each Year to the "totals" post, too.
Ok, I'll post information up and you can use what ever you want.
By the way what's the sales to get certificates on the singles charts in the 80's and now ?.
Before 1989, 250,000 was Silver, 500,000 was Gold, and 1,000,000 was Platinum. Now, it's 200,000 for Silver, 400,000 for Gold, and 600,000 for Platinum.
Dear Jessie sales , quite amazed that this single outsold Cherish and Express Yourself!!!
The Christmas period helped Dear Jessie's sales.

MDNA doesn't appear on today's top 40 midweek album chart.
I think it could possibly just make it come Sunday - like Paul Weller's album did.
You could be right.

OUT (168) Masterpiece
117 (87) Celebration
Not too bad thanks for that.
Hopefully Masterpiece will re-enter when the W/E soundtrack is released!
The soundtrack is already out and you can't download Masterpiece separately from the album. The only way you can buying it seperately is buying from the MDNA album.
But I guess you mean when the DVD is released.
Radio 1 are counting down the top 150 bestselling singles of the millennium!
On 7th May Bank Holiday Monday from 7am to 7pm

Masterpiece is the 60th most played song of the year in the UK so far!.
Oops! Forgot that the soundtrack was already out! But I guess it could re-enter when the DVD is released.
I guess only fans will buy the DVD but hopefully someone people will have open minds.
It seems more and more obvious to choose Masterpiece as the third single, and I'm sure it would get atleast a Top 40 position - if it was released properly!
We can barely get a 2nd single here so, I really don't think a 3rd single will surface here even Masterpiece all M's camp are worried about is the tour but they knew when the album was out and the start of the tour.
Hung Up is the 136th best selling single of 2000-2012 so far selling 548,000
Source: Radio 1
No surprise but MDNA doesn't appear on the mid week top 40.
Shame that in a year or two, Hung Up will have fallen out of the Top 150! Should be so much higher, but of course, it fell into the low sales of 2005!
Unless MDNA picks up due to Girl Gone Wild, I can see it spending two more weeks in the Top 75, probably going 38-55-74 or something like that.
Thanks for unlocking!
111. (117) Celebration
That's good news for Celebration.
I could see it re-entering low Top 100 with low albums sales at the moment.
Maybe but who's buying it because iTunes have put in back to £9.99 and HMV.com have it for £20.
UK iTunes right now:
Pop Album Chart:
65 - Something To Remember
69 - MDNA (Deluxe)
92 - Celebration (Deluxe)
Soundtrack Album Chart:
50 - Evita (Standard)
108 (111) Celebration
Awesome!.
It would be great if You'll See makes the top 200 tonight.
I really hope so! It would be a shame if it didn't since it was Top 100 on iTunes for a day or two.
Can't believe Girl Gone Wild made #73 I was hoping top 50 at least.
I'm surprised it even did that
I was just thinking Masterpiece went 5 places higher and that was on download only.
I think a lot of people prefer Masterpiece to Girl Gone Wild, and Masterpiece has had radio airplay and promotion from W/E. There's still a few more release formats of Girl Gone Wild, so maybe it could get higher?
I seriously doubt it. Only the physical maxi cd is left to be released and that won't be out here till June 12th lol.
Ah, perhaps not then! On another note, MDNA didn't have a sales increase!
Where is MDNA this week?
#36, up three
It climbed, that's good enough for me!.
From MW:
Madonna's Girl Gone Wild sold 1,221 copies on CD and a further 699 on 12-inch (topping the 12-inch chart) - but despite this, and the fact the track is being used extensively on TV to promote Madonna's new perfume Truth Or Dare, Girl Gone Wild makes a woeful number 73 debut on the Top 75, with 3,557 sales. It is the third song from Madonna's current album MDNA to chart - and none has performed well. First single Gimme All Your Lovin' featured M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj but still stalled at number 37 in February, while Masterpiece crawled to number 68 in April despite winning a Golden Globe award and getting huge airplay support from Radio 2. MDNA is barely affected by the release of Girl Gone Wild, climbing 39-36, while recording its lowest weekly sales tally of 3,506. After eight weeks on release , MDNA has finally topped the 100,000 sales mark, with 103,381 sales to date. Aside from the three songs mentioned above.
I'm not expecting MDNA to be top 40 this week but let's see on the album chart later today. I guess it depends how low sales are in general in the UK. I'd love to see The Complete Studio Albums 1983 - 2008 make a return in the top 200 as HMV are selling it for just £15, I don't know if they are just selling it as that price online or in store as well. Does anybody know ?.
No surprises, MDNA isn't Top 40 on todays update:
http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/guitar-hero-joe-bonamassa-on-course-to-topple-keane-1407/
MDNA is the 26th best selling album of the year so far. It was #27 last week.
103. (108) Celebration
Great stuff!. I dread to think what the sales were just because the state of the sales in general in the album chart.
I take it You'll See never made the top 200? .

No surprise GGW falls out of the top 100 singles chart.
Cheers! It wouldn't suprise me if Girl Gone Wild fell out of the Top 200!
I hope not!...
Radio 2 will be counting down the top 60 best selling singles acts EVER this bank holiday weekend.
Madonna should be at #4.

Girl Gone Wild fell out of the top 200 singles chart last week .
The song didnt deserve that it's actually good with excellent remixes.
50 (56) MDNA - 10 wks
Good to see it climbing! Any reason, or is it just because sales are low and it hasn't actually had a sales increase?
HMV are selling the standard version for £3! Just for Friday - Tuesday this week for the bank holiday and just a little thing that a few extras maybe because she started her world tour.
Oh by the way, it's an in store ONLY offer.

By Lauren Kreisler
The Official Charts Company today unveils the Diamond Dozen – the 12 artists who have sold more than 10m singles in the history of the UK ‘s Official Singles Chart.
This definitive list of chart royalty is published to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee of both Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the UK’s Official Singles Chart - both celebrating 60 glorious years of heritage in 2012 – the list forms part of a BBC Radio 2 show running from 2pm till 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday (June 4).
In November 1952, five months after Queen Elizabeth II took the throne, the first ever Official Singles Chart was published in the New Musical Express. To mark this joint Jubilee, the Official Charts Company has compiled the definitive list of the biggest singles artists of all time, to be counted down by BBC Radio 2's Tony Blackburn in a special Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday show.
The list reveals The Beatles at the top, having sold the most chart singles over the past 60 years in the UK, followed by Elvis Presley and Sir Cliff Richard – all three have sold more than 20m singles in the UK. The Top 5 is completed by Madonna (on 17.6m) and Michael Jackson (15.3m).
Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company, adds, “The Diamond Dozen, from the Beatles to Kylie, with Rihanna, Madonna, Elvis and Bowie in between, is truly the cream of music makers over the past six decades years. Over the past 60 years, the Official Singles Chart has provided the musical soundtrack to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s reign – and these artists have been her entertainers.”
The full Diamond Dozen are as follows:
01 THE BEATLES 21.9m
02 ELVIS PRESLEY 21.6m
03 CLIFF RICHARD 21.5m
04 MADONNA 17.6m
05 MICHAEL JACKSON 15.3m
06 ELTON JOHN 14.8m
07 QUEEN 12.6m
08 ABBA 11.2m
09 DAVID BOWIE 10.6m
10 RIHANNA 10.4m
11 PAUL McCARTNEY 10.2m
12 KYLIE MINOGUE 10.1m

BBC Radio 2 unveils full Official Singles Artists Top 60
The Diamond Dozen (outlined above) is the pinnacle of a full list of the Official Singles Artists Top 60 Of All Time, compiled by the Official Charts Company, which will be the subject of a Radio 2 show airing between 2pm and 5pm today, hosted by Tony Blackburn. The show will count down the full list, from Number 60 to Number 1, highlighting the biggest selling single by each artist.
The full Official Singles Artists Top 60 features plenty of stories. With singles sales currently at an all-time high (with 178m sold in 2011), current day stars perform surprisingly well. French DJ David Guetta comes in at 49, ahead of Coldplay and Duran Duran, while Eminem at 18 out-sells the likes of Tom Jones, Mariah Carey and U2.
Other stories include boy band Take That at 15 defeating girl power, with Spice Girls at 20. In turn, Britney Spears just pips Lady Gaga, at 26 and 28 respectively.
In turn, two artists feature twice in the list; Paul McCartney is at number 1 with The Beatles and at 11 as a solo artist, while George Michael is at 21 as a solo artist and 43 with Wham!.
Tony Blackburn, who will be hosting the Bank Holiday Monday show, says, “This chart offers a fascinating look at the past 60 years in music and shows the impact that modern stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry have had. The list is really varied and will provide something for everyone. There are definitely a few surprises in store - Coldplay being at 60 for one! It is sure to be an interesting listen and will be a great way to spend the Bank Holiday afternoon.”

Nero to support North American MDNA Tour
London's premiere dubstep duo Nero has been announced as the opening act of the North American leg of Madonna's MDNA Tour this fall.
British-born producers, remixers, DJs, and artists Dan Stephens and Joe Ray aka Nero, will open for the Queen of Pop on select dates in the U.S. and in Canada, including New York's Madison Square Garden, Toronto's Air Canada Centre and Miami's American Airlines Arena. Nero will open the show with a DJ set, featuring live vocals from Alana.
Nero recently appeared at Coachella, Sasquatch, and the Electric Daisy Carnival NYC festivals and is also set to perform several shows on this summer's IDentity Festival, as well as at Lollapalooza in Chicago and Hard Summer Los Angeles in August. Please see below for all of Nero's upcoming tour dates.
Nero has been touring all year in support of their debut album Welcome Reality, which was released by Cherrytree/Interscope Records in December to rave reviews from Spin, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Billboard.
Released in the U.K. in August 2011, Welcome Reality debuted at No. 1 and rapidly earned gold status, fueled by its singles "Innocence," Guilt," "Promises" (which also stormed straight to the top of the UK charts) and "Me and You," which was the most played record on Radio 1 for three weeks in a row and is the first U.S. single from the album. The official video for the song has racked up more than 13 million plays on YouTube.

Wrong thread sorry.
MDNA is currently #31 in the UK mid weeks!
Good old HMV! Hope it stays Top 40 for Sunday!
MDNA is still the 26th best selling album of the year so far.
Thanks to vidcapper.
121. (117) Celebration
That's good for Celebration thanks Liam!
MDNA isn't top 40 today. Surely it climbs today or maybe the jubilee effect took over we will see..
It will probably be number 41! At the very least, it should climb.
That's what I'm thinking, but you never know cos of the jubilee, the sales will be interesting to see.
#59 then
Number 59 well it is still a climb, it shall decline again until the tour arrives
She was #50 last week!
Now that IS a suprise! It's too much to ask for sales increase!
Yeah! I'll be very surprised if she's top 75 next week.
Oh didn't realise she dropped ?
Yeah 9 places but it was £3 in Hmv for a few days.
MDNA sold about 2,700 last week to make about 112,000 to date.
120k in another 4 weeks perhaps?
I'm guessing it will have a massive fall this week. Roll on July but I'm sure 99% of the fans going will already own the album.
There will be thousands of people going to the gigs who don't have the album but are just going to here her classics (hence why they will leave frustrated cos it's not a gh show)
143. (121) Celebration
MDNA is out of top 100 after just 11 wks!.
So much for new promotion Guy!
Vince Kidd's cover of Like A Virgin debuts at #97.
I would like to think it's dropped out just because of Father's Day effect, and will re-enter the Top 100 next week, but it probably won't
I think your right. We have to wait about 4 or 5 weeks for an improvement in the charts here I think.
Madonna's weeks in the album chart Top 75: 1,184 to date.
The most for a female.
From Music Week
Madonna's MDNA is a notable absentee from the Top 75, freefalling 59-129 (1,128 sales) this week to complete an 11 week run on the list. It is the shortest initial Top 75 run of any Madonna album since her self-titled 1984 debut. MDNA has sold 112,765 copies to date.
Also..
Vince Kidd's cover of Like A Virgin made sales of 2,724 downloads to make #97.
Huge drop!
70 places!
125. (143) Celebration
129. (59) MDNA
Celebration ahead of MDNA...oh dear!
I think it's going to be like this from now on, apart from maybe the week she tours the UK.
Thanks as always!.
Hopefully Celebration will go 2 x platinum by the end of the year if it's still selling 1k each week. Plus the tour effect and it has also been top 40 for 2 weeks ok not massive sales but I hope it reaches 600,000 sales.

Great stuff! Must be higher than Celebration still, good ol' HMV summer sales!
What are they selling Celebration for ?.
Ain't they selling MDNA for £8 and £13 each ?.
Oh yeah your right!. Does this include in store too?.
I think so, I can't remember if I saw it in HMV or not, but I would presume so.
143. (170) MDNA
183. (187) Celebration
Both climbs! Yaay.
Celebration hasn't been out of the top 200 since the Super Bowl back in February.

Top 100 for MDNA next week it seem!
I hope MDNA goes top 75 to be honest but probably won't.
When I was in Birmingham I look in HMV and they had copies of MDNA right at the bottom of the floor on the 2 for £15 offer.
59 (110) MDNA - 12 wks
Weeks in the top 75
Wow! Didn't expect it to be that high! Hopefully, it will still be Top 100 this week, as I think she's performing in Scotland and Wales or something.
Scotland was last night and Ireland is on Tuesday.
UK Digital Album Chart:

Scottish Album Chart:

MDNA is #9 on Irish iTunes tonight!!.
Taken from Music Week's analysis of the first quarter (Jan-Mar) of 2012
MDNA - 38th Best Selling Artist Album of the Quarter - 56,339 copies sold
The Immaculate Collection - 77th Best Selling Artist Album of the Quarter - 30,857 copies sold - total = 1,428,263 (I presume of 21st century, as it's peak is given as #8)
Give Me All Your Luvin' - 90th Best Selling Single of the Quarter - 43,750 copies sold
The Immaculate Collection - 2nd Best Selling Budget Album of the Quarter - 30,855 copies sold (as far as I'm aware, budget chart only doesn't include downloads, so only 2 copies were downloads )
The Immaculate Collection - 4th Best Selling Catalogue Greatest Hits of the Quarter - 30,857 copies sold
Celebration - 13th Best Selling Catalogue Greatest Hits of the Quarter - 22,326 copies sold
MDNA - 9th Best Selling Album Released in the Quarter - 56,339 copies sold

59 (110) MDNA
107 (171) Celebration
Nearly top 100 then for Celebration!
I'm guessing a big fall for MDNA tonight
Out of the top 100.. No surprise.
112. (59) MDNA
145. (107) Celebration
MDNA nearly repeated the 70 place fall & Celebration did ok I think.
Although to be fair, MDNA did fall to a similar level it was before the tour came to the UK (it was #110 before jumping to #59), and last week it didn't have the hype of the tour coming to the UK or the promotion (little of, I know) of the tour.
The album is doing well I think. As not any promotion. The press did everything to make the Hyde park show look like a shambles but it wasn't.
Considering its start, it has done well to stick around. Although I suspect that the album will have another huge fall this week, and then fall out of the Top 200 (unless HMV's 2 for £15 offer can help it).
When the tour hit birmingham, I looked in HMV at the bullring shopping centre and they had MDNA right at the bottom right next the floor - you think they would of tried to promote it lol.
Ohhh!
193 (112) MDNA
OUT (145) Celebration
I could see MDNA spending one more week in the Top 200 due to a boost from Turn Up the Radio (mind you, only a small one), then fall out of the Top 200.
Turn Up The Radio didn't make the top 100.
Turn Up The Radio debuts at #175.
Back from Ibiza! So, where were we...
175. (NE) Turn Up the Radio
186. (RE) Like a Prayer
OUT. (193) MDNA
Welcome back Liam! Hope you had a great time. Thanks for the update.
Happy that Like A Prayer returned to the top 200!. I'm guessing it will fall out of the top 200 cos of the Olympics stuff.
Anyway it's in the top 100 pop songs on iTunes currently at #79.
Thank you, I did indeed! Like a Prayer is currently #169 on iTunes, so even with all the Olympic songs (most of them will have fallen huge places but still nevertheless in the Top 200), it should remain Top 200 I reckon.
Top 100 Best Selling Karaoke Classics was broadcast on Magic with sales given by OCC:
88. Vogue 500k
59. Like a Virgin 790k
Therefore, Vogue's sales have lost 5k and Like a Virgin adds 10k
Go Like A Virgin!!. I'm still loving the MDNA version. Hardly karaoke I know!!.
No Madonna in either the singles or albums chart.
I thought that would be the case.

Like a Prayer has done great considering there wasn't a Top 200 available during it's initial chart run. Holiday had 3 main chart runs, but it's still great to see how well it did during those runs.
27 years ago this week:
Like A Virgin became Madonna's 1st UK number one album.
UK Sales from Top 50 US Girls of 21st Century list:
Hung Up: 590k
4 Minutes: 490k
Music: 410k
American Pie: 390k
So when Hung Up sells 10k more to get sales of 600,000 that goes platinum is that right?.
That's what I was thinking. I doubt they will apply for it anytime soon after it finally does hit 600k.
Madonna has been named the biggest-selling female singles artist in UK chart history
The iconic singer has sold over 17.8 million singles in the UK since her chart debut with ‘Holiday’ back in January 1984.
The track peaked at number six and it wasn’t until 1985 that Madonna claimed her first UK number one single with ‘Into the Groove’.
However, Rihanna is quickly catching up with the legendary performer after shifting 11.4 million singles in the UK in just seven years, reports The Official Charts Company.
The Bajan star has sold over 3 million singles in the UK over the last year alone and could realistically overtake Madonna’s lead within the next two and half years.
Kylie Minogue is at number three will 10.2 million singles sold across her 25-year career, while Whitney Houston is at four (8.5m) and Lady GaGa is at five (7.329m).
The Official Biggest Selling Female Singles Artists of All Time are as follows:
1. Madonna (17.8m)
2. Rihanna (11.4m)
3. Kylie Minogue (10.2m)
4. Whitney Houston (8.5m)
5. Lady GaGa (7.329m)
6. Britney Spears (7.324m)
7. Beyoncé (6.9m)
8. Celine Dion (6.7m)
9. Mariah Carey (6.62m)
10. Olivia Newton John (6.61m)

Updated the first page. For the sales post, I've added the total sales lists from August 2008 (Music Week) and September 2010 (MTV), then a list of single and album estimates (some lower than the sales from 2008/10 because of Gezza's estimates).

I thought it might remember me saying about it Liam, anyway surely it MUST climb this week .
It must be near or at 2 x Platinum now.
Hopefully, Celebration will be in the top 100 tonight.
Wouldn't surprise me if it didn't and stuck inside the top 200.

Will probably drop out this week - the last time I checked iTunes it had plummeted to #400 and something.
Since 2009, it's peak per year has been:
1-15-111-35-147
Still good to see . iTunes are no longer promoting it so you would only know it's on offer if you search for it.
Out of the Top 200.
No surprise. iTunes are charging £7.99 for it now. Thanks Liam.
Hung Up has become Madonna's sixth 600k+ seller and 4 Minutes has become her 12th single to sell over half a million copies.
Courtesy of Magic's Top 100 Female Singles of the Noughties:
55. Hung Up - 600,000
74. 4 Minutes - 500,000
Great stuff.
They are rounded to the nearest 10k, so they could still be a few thousand off, but still.
Hung Up has sold ~16,000 in 9 months (was on 584,000 in May 2012 when the best sellers of the Noughties was revealed) which means ~21,000 per year, ~1,800 per month and ~400 per week.
Have they overtaken songs in her best sellers chart ?
Yeah I guessed that the figures were rounded up. I'm really happy with 4 Minutes sales tho.
As for Papa Don't Preach I can't see Hung Up overtaking it anytime soon because its always beening played on radio or tv.
Music Week:
4 Minutes - 497,951 (as of 23:59pm on Saturday).
I'm thrilled to get precise sales! I've worked out 4 Minutes has sold at least 3k since February when its sales were given as 490k +/- 5k.
Hung would have sold a million if sold in download era, it frustrates me that Kylie, celine, Whitney, cher , Mariah (minutes away), gaga etc have all achieved this !
I guess Justin Timberlake's recent success has helped 4 Minutes lots. I would love if Madonna could get a million seller, but I think it would only be with a recent single.
She actually isn't even that close to a million , into the groove is like 180,000 sales away I think ! But we all know all her sales added up put her at number 1
She was also really unlucky that single sales also took a dip when like a prayer and vogue were originally released !!
Just checked out the sales vault on this forum, into the groove is the 189th best selling single in the uk with sales of 870,000
From the OCC Report on Justin Timberlake's Best Selling Singles:
While his album output might be a little on the scarce side, he’s been popping up all over the place on the Official Singles Chart as a featured artist. Some of his biggest successes have been as a guest star, with his best-performing outing being the 2008 smash 4 Minutes with the mighty Madonna, notching up almost 500,000 copies in the UK and hitting the Number 1 spot all over the world. So far, 4 Minutes is Madonna’s biggest-selling digital download.

The scheme forms the official recognition of artist achievement in respect of UK sales of albums, singles and music DVDs/Blu-rays, and the basis on which the industry’s Silver, Gold and Platinum/Multi-Platinum discs are presented.
Previously, BPI waited for official notification from its label members of a title’s sales performance based on shipment deliveries, but from today (Friday, July 19) the awards will automatically recognise the popularity of artist releases as soon as they go past relevant sales thresholds, in-line with Official Charts Company data.
This new approach aims to improve the integrity of the awards scheme, making it instantly more up-to-date and accurate across all formats. BPI members will, however, retain the option of notifying the trade body’s Rob Crutchley of their new release shipment deliveries, thus ensuring the scheme remains a flexible one that enables the success of titles to be recognised at the earliest possible opportunity if required.
Also, Non-BPI members will now be able to participate in the Awards Scheme for the first time.
As part of this ‘auto-updating’ process, which is based on data stretching back to 1994 when the Official Charts Company was established, sales certifications for a number of titles have been retrospectively updated:
Included in the list of newly-certified albums are the likes of Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon, Rita Ora’s Rita Ora and Little Mix’s DNA – which are recognised for achieving over 300,000 sales to attain Platinum status, while Susan Boyle’s 2010 smash The Gift is acknowledged as going Double Platinum for its 600,000-plus sales.
A number of albums, such as Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox and Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, have been given an updated category certification – moving from Gold (100,000 copies) to Double Platinum (600,000 copies) status.
In relation to singles, releases that are certified for the first time include the world’s best-selling title of 2012 – Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, which has its Double Platinum status (1.2 million-plus sales) confirmed.
Among the Music DVDs/Blu-rays being acknowledged with a certification is the record-breaking 2009 video release Take That Presents: The Circus Live, which is recognised for going x11 Platinum (550,000-plus sales).
These changes form part of a wider and ongoing review of how artist achievements in sales should be acknowledged and celebrated going forward, and further announcements will made in due course.

That's very good news! '4 Minutes' and 'Hung Up' are in particular in need of receiving Gold and Platinum certifications respectively. I'm not sure if this means her songs from the 80s will be updated with the certifications used today (so that 'Into the Groove' will be Platinum, which would mean 1m+ sales at the time.)
Every interesting I can't wait to see what this does for her back catalogue.
According to British Phonographic Industry (BPI), Madonna is the most certified artist of all time in United Kingdom, with 45 awards

From the OCC:
We show the Queen of Pop’s 1986 hit from the True Blue album some Pop Gem love.
There’s not a lot to say about Madonna that hasn’t been said already. Master of reinvention, Queen of Pop, ambitious Material Girl – she’s been called them all. When you’re talking about a star as huge as Madonna, so globally hyper-mega-famous and instantly recognisable to any music fan, it can be easy to forget why she became such a massive icon in the first place: she is very good at being a popstar and has all the tunes.
13 Number 1 singles in the UK
Her track record speaks for itself. She’s reached the peak of the Official Singles Chart 13 times – her first was Into The Groove in 1985 – and has enjoyed 12 Official Albums Chart Number 1s. Hit after hit after hit in a career spanning almost 30 years, from that very first UK chart entry in January 1984 (Holiday, which peaked at Number 6) to her most recent Top 40 entry Give Me All Your Luvin’.
Birthday girl
So in celebration of Madonna’s 55th birthday today, we thought it was about to time we showed a bit of love for the lady who paved the way for Kylie, Britney, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and a host of other female solo stars. Throughout her career she’s been unapologetic about expressing her sexuality and is always ready to get frank when necessary (and quite often when not, but that’s our Madge).
The Pop Gem problem
But which of Madonna’s track to pick as a Pop Gem? There are so many. We decided to cut out the Number 1s straightaway – as much as we love Into The Groove, Vogue, Music, Hung Up and the rest, they’ve had their time in the spotlight. So what about the classic tracks that didn’t make it to the top? We threw it out to our followers on Facebook and Twitter. Most of the suggestions were absolute corkers and we debated long and hard at Official Charts HQ, but the honour had to go to Open Your Heart, which made Number 4 at the end of 1986. The track was picked by Facebook follower James Masterton, a man of impeccable taste.
The Number 1 that should’ve been?
Open Your Heart suffered, in a way, from following the mega smashes Papa Don’t Preach and True Blue in 1986. Its parent album – also called True Blue – was an essential in every pop lover’s Christmas stocking that year and selling like rather warm baked goods, so Open Your Heart may have been overlooked simply because all the other tracks were so huge.
1986 was a stellar year for Madonna. The four singles she had in the Top 200 of the year sold just over 1.7 million copies combined in 1986. Papa Don’t Preach was the big one, coming in 8th for 1986 and shifting 583,000 copies that year. True Blue comes in next, selling 495,000 copies in ’86, the 11th best seller of the year. Open Your Heart settled for 170,000 sales in 1986 – not bad to say it was released in December. It managed to sell another 40,000 in 1987.
That notorious video
Its video caused quite a stir when first released, and featured Madonna playing the role of what you might call an exotic dancer if you were describing it to your gran. The video was also the first look the world got at Felix Howard – the rosy-cheeked 13-year-old who went on to be a magazine cover star and even co-wrote tracks for Sugababes and Amy Winehouse when he grew up.
We’re not quite sure how Madonna feels about Open Your Heart. While it was a staple of her first three tours, it was pretty much ignored in Madonna’s live sets for 22 years, before reappearing in 2012’s MDNA tour. We, however, love it, like a favourite cardigan (cashmere) or extra scoop of ice cream. It always makes us feel good.
A staple of her first 3 tours ?

Thanks so much for posting Liam so great to see Hung Up finally platinum!! And all the others updated.
I'm pleased about the updates too but surprised to see there wasn't more album updates
That's a good point actually.
I don't think they've finished updating yet - someone mentioned in the Sugababes AF that there's still some Sugababes ones which need updating despite them updating some. However, all of her albums appear to be correct aside Hard Candy which should be Platinum (remember pre-1994 albums won't be automatically updated). As for her singles, 'Don't Tell Me' must be close to Silver but I wouldn't have thought it would have passed 200k just yet.
I didn't know that about pre 1994
They won't be updating pre 1994 as they don't have the figures- Gallup took their data with them when they lost the chart contract so they simply don't know. Having said that it doesn't stop them giving sales for the Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.
We also have a new figure for MDNA- 131,924

Robbie Williams, JLS and Jake Bugg are battling it out to score the 1000th Number 1 album on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.
Lady Gaga yesterday secured the 999th Official Number 1 in the 57-and-a-half year history of the UK’s Official Albums Chart – meaning that a new Number 1 this Sunday (November 24) will be the historic 1000th Number 1.
The albums set to fight it out for the honour of the 1000th Official Number 1 are Robbie Williams’ new album Swing Both Ways, the JLS greatest hits Goodbye and Jake Bugg’s second album Shangri-la. All three albums are released today (Monday, November 18), with initial sales reports set to show who is setting the early pace tomorrow morning (Tuesday).
The very first Number 1 album back in July 1956 was Frank Sinatra’s classic Songs For Swingin’ Lovers – in the chart compiled and published in Record Mirror magazine.
Since then, there have almost 3,000 different album charts published – with a colourful history, including a 1971 postal strike which prevented a rundown being published for several weeks (with George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass retrospectively crowned as the ex-Beatle’s only Number 1 with a solo studio album).
Over the six decades, The Beatles are the undefeated kings of the Official Albums Chart, with 15 Number 1s and 174 weeks at the summit – with Elvis Presley totting up the second biggest total of weeks (63 weeks, across 11 chart toppers), and Madonna the second biggest albums tally (12 Number 1s in total, spanning 30 weeks).
In the three and half years after the chart was launched in July 1956, 17 albums hit Number 1 during the 1950s. In turn, 56 albums topped the album chart in the 1960s, 147 did so in the 1970s, 182 in the 1980s, 215 in the 1990s and 269 in the 2000s. The 1000th Number 1 of all time will be the 114th of this decade.
“This is a hugely significant landmark in the history of the music industry,” says Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot. “While the Official Singles Chart is the fast-moving, barometer of pop music tastes, the Official Albums Chart reflects the broader tastes of British music fans and their attachment to outstanding song collections.
“The list of albums which have topped the albums chart over the years underlines just how important it is, including iconic titles such as The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper… and Revolver, The Stones’ Exile On Main Street, David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane, Led Zepplin IV, Queen’s A Night At The Opera, Michael Jackson’s Thriller – right up to Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black, Adele’s 21 and Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories.”
The winner will be crowned this Sunday at 7pm, and the Official Albums Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here.

Notes: For the purposes of this analysis, the Official Albums Chart are the following rundowns: July 1956 to Nov 1958, Record Mirror Album Chart; Nov 1958 to March 1960, Melody Maker Album Chart; March 1960 to 1969, Record Retailer Album Chart; February 1969 to date – Official Album Chart. The statistics outlined in this release reflect the contemporary chart rules (as laid out by the music industry) at the time of chart publication. For instance, various artist compilations were admitted to the Official Albums Chart until January 1989, when they were excluded and appeared in their own Official Compilation Chart.
Quite impressive for Madonna to be the only female act in both of those given Top 10s. I have no idea which female soloist is closet to making the Top 10 of Most Number One Albums - I count 5 for Celine Dion and 6 for Barbra Streisand but they haven't got much chance of getting 9+. Even Rihanna and Lady Gaga are on 4 and 3 respectively.
How many as Kylie had ?.
She has 5 too - I forgot about Greatest Hits from 1992. If she releases her new album in the Spring when The Voice UK is on, she could potentially receive her sixth.
The OCC have revealed a list of artists by the amount of their #1 albums which allows me to work out a females only list:
01. Madonna : 12 (this list gives 11 so probably not counting Evita)
02. Barbra Streisand : 6
03. Celine Dion : 5
04. Kylie Minogue : 5
05. Rihanna : 4
06. Amy Winehouse : 3
07. Avril Lavigne : 3
08. Eva Cassidy : 3
09. Kate Bush : 3
10. Lady Gaga : 3
11. Norah Jones : 3
12. Susan Boyle : 3
Then it goes into artists with just one or two. Seems Rihanna has the best chance of overtaking but it will take many years, even though she seems to release an album every 5 minutes!
Thanks for posting!!.

Official Charts Flashback: 30 years of Holiday, Madonna’s First Top 10 Hit
07/02/2014
By Justin Myers
1984: A song called Holiday jets into the Top 10 for the very first time – but certainly not the last. Madonna’s debut hit and signature song has been a Top 10 hit THREE times.
Can you remember a time before Madonna? If you can’t, and only know her as the global superstar she is now, there’s every chance you won’t know just how exciting, different and interesting this ragtag American singer with a kind of squeaky voice seemed when her ditty about skiving off work entered the Top 10 this week in 1984.
Sassy solo female singers were nothing new, of course and another young American lady named Cyndi Lauper was enjoying her first Top 10 hit with Girls Just Want To Have Fun a little further up the chart, but Madonna seemed to have something special from the start. Brutally honest and funny in interviews, her music was unashamedly poppy and devoted to having a good time and Holiday, now one of her most famous songs, perfectly encapsulated Madonna’s whole ethos: “Awww, just have a day off, it’ll be fine”.
Watch Madonna perform Holiday on Top Of The Pops before we tell the story of her very first feelgood smash. The guy dancing to the left of her with the impressive sweatpatches is her brother Christopher.
Little did we know that behind those bright eyes and kind of half-hearted dancing there was an ambitious workaholic, who would stop at nothing until she achieved global domination and, well, it didn’t take her very long.
Holiday had been in the Top 40 for three weeks before it finally clambered into the Top 10. It seemed odd that this happy, carefree record hadn’t been released in the height of summer and when it peaked at Number 6, Madonna obviously decided that wasn’t good enough – it was rereleased 18 months later covered in suntan lotion and in the height of Madonnamania, this time making it all the way to Number 2.
Holiday was Madonna’s first Top 10 hit but her next two singles fared less well. Lucky Star landed at Number 14 and Borderline, a huge fan favourite, actually stalled at Number 56 first time round. That one usually comes up in pub quizzes – nobody can quite believe it wasn’t an instant hit.
Perhaps sensing that plan for world domination couldn’t be achieved by tracks from her debut, self-titled album, she moved on to the Like A Virgin era in November 1984, beginning a residency of the Official Singles Chart that would see every single she released for the next 10 years chart in the Top 10. Yes, all 35 of them. 35! The spell was finally broken by Take A Bow, one of her biggest hits in the US, which peaked at Number 16 in the UK.
Borderline would get another shot at the Top 10 in 1986, when it zoomed up to Number 2, coming at the end of a blitz of Madonna chart entries – eight within a year. She would have to wait until August 1985 for her first Number 1, Into The Groove. For one week, Holiday sat right behind it in Number 2. There’d be another 12 chart-toppers to come, but we’ll be talking about those later…
After Madonna released her first greatest hits collection in late 1990, The Immaculate Collection (still one of the biggest selling albums in the UK of all time, fact fans), Holiday’s time had come once more. It was rereleased the following summer with some tunes that hadn’t made the greatest hits and so had another crack at the Official Singles Chart. This time, it reached Number 5. Three goes at getting to the top spot is a pretty impressive run, and even more impressive to hit the Top 20 every time, but you’ve got to know when it’s time to retire, and Holiday finally went on a very long chart vacation and hasn’t been since.
Madonna’s not one for showing much affection for her old hits, but Holiday has fared better than most – she has performed it on all but one of her nine live tours. And you love it too: it is one of her biggest selling singles, shifting 795,000 copies in the UK.
Watch Madge – we can’t believe we got the whole way through an article without calling her Madge until now – perform it on her Reinvention Tour in 2004. She’s come a long way, hasn’t she?
Tomorrow, to celebrate 30 years since that very first hit on the Official Singles Chart: all Madonna’s Number 1 singles in the UK, ranked by how much they sold. What’s your favourite? Find out which of her 13 chart-toppers has outsold the rest.
Thanks got posting that, you beat me to it 795,000 sold
Surely tomorrow's countdown should be like this.. Unless we are in for a surprise

Presumably 'Like a Virgin' is still second on her best sellers list though with at least over 800k. Wonder if this is a better trickle seller than 'Into the Groove'?
Ooh I didn't read the last paragraph, hopefully sales are given!
The OCC have got it wrong Holiday debuted in the UK charts on Jan 8th 1984 not February 8th.
Crazy for you and beautiful stranger are among her biggest selling hits in the uk. My guess would be this although hung up and like a prayer may jump up through download sales

Would like to say RIP to Hanboo from UKMIX forum who had compiled the majority of the Madonna chart runs you see on the first page.
That's a big loss, we all used those at some point whether it's Madonna's info or someone else's.
How old was hanboo ?. Any idea of the cause ?.
True Blue could be in the top 100 album chart on Sunday as it's currently #25 on the first mid weeks and it's only 99p on google play.
Great news! Hopefully it's passed 2 million copies by now.
#22 today for True Blue!!

#19 on today's update.
Good to see it's been climbing throughout the week! Would be great if it could remain Top 20 on Sunday, but of course it's wonderful that it's 99% certain of Top 40.
True Blue re-enters the chart at #21! Slight shame it just missed out on the Top 20 but great to see it back anyway.
Excellent stuff.
True Blue down to #150.
Thanks for the info, I was surprised it was still top 200.
Interesting!!

Great Stuff
Unfortunately, the updated archives on the OCC site see differences between the #76-100 positions to those given on UKMIX.
Therefore changes have been to chart runs from 'Secret' to 'Don't Tell Me' and I'll have to assume the #101-200 positions from this period were wrong too. Albums are fine though.
Celebration has re-entered the album chart at #130 - marking the 7th year in a row that it's entered the chart. Total sales stand at 545k and it's #76 in the mids!
Thanks for the info Liam.
Celebration is #65 in today's midweek update.
Celebration is up 62% of sales from last week according to the OCC.
Great boost! #53 in today's update.
Celebration is #46 today - Top 40 here we come!
Excellent 😃
Celebration officially re-enters at #38.
That's great news I also see it made the same peak on the sales alone chart and didn't make the top 100 streaming chart.
Celebration also made #52 on the Scottish album chart.
Celebration is #42 in the Wednesday Update, dropping from #38 in yesterday's but I'm sure it'll be back in the Top 40 come Sunday (unless it continues to drop throughout the week).
Like LFL I think this could fall out of the top 40 and return when Rebel Heart is released.
Celebration still #42 in today's update.
Celebration is a non-mover at #38 in the UK this week (actually #37 on sales-only).
I noticed that too!! Also #34 on physical sales up from #44 last week.
Really pleased it managed to stay in the top 40.
Celebration is #32 on today's update.
Excellent.
Rebel Heart at #2; Celebration at #27.
Excellent stuff.
In the official chart, 'Living for Love' just holds onto the Top 75 at #75. At this stage, 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' was #118.
In the sales only chart, it is #53 whilst 'Ghosttown' is #65.
Random info: 'Girl Gone Wild' re-enters the physical chart at #64!
I'm adding new chart runs to post 3 on the first page - downloads, sales, streams, physicals etc.
Just finished the physical singles and there was quite a few surprises - who knew 'Girl Gone Wild' and 'Revolver' would be so popular?
Rebel Heart is currently the 21st biggest selling artist album in the UK this year.
Great list. A labour of love! Her updated 21st century total (from the MW quote on pg15 of the thread) hasn't been added to the first post though - worth sticking it on there? (Not sure if it was ref to albums or records, ie. album and singles combined)
'Die Another Day' gets certified Silver (200k) by the BPI, yay!
'Vogue' has now sold 535k, as revealed by the OCC in their new quiz: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/quiz-who-sold-more__11079/
Exciting news! The Immaculate Collection has re-entered the chart at #187 - the first time since August 2008. It's regularly charted on the budget chart though.
Fab
Do we have recent total sales for it?
1,518,262
Thanks Joe! I assume it's her best selling greatest hits by some way?
I feel like 90s sales may be missing though... I'll look into it...I swear it's sold loads more than that..
Edit - yes, those are just sales from 1994 onwards....sales before are just lost...
The figure Joe posted is its 1994+ sales and I've been searching all over for its 1990-1993 sales to add on but can't find them anywhere!
The last official total revealed was 3,665,068 the w/e 1 November 2014 (when True Blue re-entered the Top 40 after being discounted) so I imagine it must be at 3.7m by now given it was constantly in the budget chart.
GHV2 is approaching 900k and Celebration is approaching 600k, so they'll be certified 3x and 2x Platinum when they reach those marks.
Well i'll take 3.7million over Joe's initial total
Yeah, I know which I like the sound of most!
The Immaculate Collection up to #178 this week!
Combined sales (sales + streams) for '4 Minutes' have been revealed as 530k by the OCC, suggesting perhaps 20k worth of streams.
Yes I read this, will it have taken over any other song ?
Celebration re-entered the album chart at #112 a couple of weeks ago and was #151 last week.
It had sold 565k by the end of its chart run last year but I imagine it is still way of 2x Platinum.
Any news of True Blue or Like A Virgin re-entering the UK Top 200 due to the coloured vinyl sales at Sainsbury's?
^ Both re-entered the Top 100! True Blue at #62, Like A Prayer at #72.
Had no idea they were set to re-enter! #3 and #4 on the vinyl album chart respectively and in fact #43 and #45 on the album sales-only chart!
Like a Prayer and True Blue may just have clung on to Top 200 placings last week (I'll post their positions when/if they're revealed).
Still Top 5 on the vinyl chart.
'4 Minutes' now revealed to be on 539k: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/justin-timberlakes-official-top-20-biggest-songs__15053/
'American Pie' has just passed 400k including streams: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/flashback-madonna-scored-her-9th-uk-number-1-single-with-american-pie-17-years-ago-this-week__18424/
Don't know where to post this but Celebration album has gone x2 Plat
Here's great! Thanks Joe, it was under 40k away by the end of its chart run back when Rebel Heart was released, so 2 years on its 2x platinum certification was imminent.
'Don't Tell Me' has just gone Silver! I had it down as 195k+ so I'm glad I hadn't overestimated it. I have it as her 36th certified song.
Next should be either 'The Power of Goodbye' or 'Give It 2 Me'.
So Justin Bieber has now matched Madonna's weeks at #1 in the singles - both spent 29 weeks there.
Obviously he'll surpass it too. Sad but inevitable.
Presumably the all time record is Elvis' 80 weeks, which I can't see ever being beat.
That's ludicrous lol but the charts really mean nothing these days.
No one cares about them .
From the OCC regarding 'Into the Groove':
We need to stream Into The Groove to death 😉
Didn't Spotify show streaming numbers ? Could someone post ? I only use apple
Music .
The Immaculate Collection is currently #99 in the UK midweeks! Would be wonderful if it could make it on the official chart - currently #16 on iTunes (and I believe it is charting on downloads only as the budget chart only deals with physical sales).
Should this album be re-released ?
What could be changed / added ?
This always outsells Celebration which I find quite odd !
The Immaculate Collection didn't manage to re-enter the Top 100 Albums but it was #91 on the sales-only chart and #25 on downloads.
On the physical singles chart, we have 'new' entries at #28 and #29 from 'You'll See' and 'Music' (both obviously originally charted on physicals only but I'm only considering physical chart entries from when downloads first came part of the official chart). 'Sorry' is also back at #44.
The Immaculate Collection re-entered at #106 officially.
Drops to #131 this week.
'Into the Groove' is the 14th best selling vinyl single of 2017 so far.

Assuming that's the Dance Mix release! http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/9291
Surely that has added some decent sales getting it closer to that £900,000 mark.
I purchased this !!
The Immaculate Collection drops out the chart again.
Be interesting to see if LAV and ROL enter next week due to the vinyl sales.
I suspect they could potentially make an appearance in the midweeks. I'll keep an eye out for info.
Would be great to see Ray of Light back in particular
Like a Virgin is at #60 and Ray of Light is at #63!
Like a Virgin
UK Album Chart: #60
UK Sales Chart: #32
UK Physical Chart: #21
UK Vinyl Chart: #5
Ray of Light
UK Album Chart: #63
UK Sales Chart: #34
UK Physical Chart: #23
UK Vinyl Chart: #7
Great to see them both back! Do we get updated sales info for each album?
So both albums sold ~1.7k this week (Like a Virgin above the mark and Ray of Light below). Ray of Light has total sales of 1.726m (up 48k on the 1.678m it had sold by November 2006) and Like a Virgin has sold 122k since 1994 (it sold about 1.550m in the 80s so that puts its total at about 1.672m - up 46k on the 1.626m it had sold by November 2006).
'Living for Love' has been revealed to be the 16th best selling single (streams included) that MNEK has worked on for other artists: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/mneks-biggest-singles-hes-worked-on-for-other-artists__20966/
Unfortunately, no sales have been included for it.
He didn't work on the actually released version tho did he ?
I'm not sure, but the article says "he joined in on its writing sessions" rather than production.
Is that because of streaming tho ?
Into The Groove was the 22nd best selling vinyl single in the UK in 2017.
It’s got to be close to the 900,000 mark now one would assume .
Yeah streams are included.
Good news: we got a sales update:
Celebration just sneaking into today's midweek update at #198, thanks to the airing of her Rebel Heart Tour on Saturday night.
With turning 60 this year hopefull Celebration and TIC will continue to sell a few good thousand more
copies.
Not sure if Celebration made it in the end (I'm guessing probably not) although The Immaculate Collection re-entered the album download chart at #83.
For her 60th birthday remaster and rerelease TIC
With a gold or platinum cover !!!
Celebration re-enters at #187 this week, another 700 copies sold which takes its total to just under 624k.
That's nearly 24k since it was certified 2x Platinum last March which works out at about 500 copies a week.
624k for a GH with that tracklisting.
TIC seems to still outsell this . I would love an updated figure on that album.
Drops to #194, just under 700 copies sold so its total is now just above 624k.
Celebration back in at #190; 627k sold to date.
Celebration up to #184.
NEW BPI CERTIFICATION!
'The Power of Goodbye'/'Little Star' has been certified Silver for sales of 200k.
It sold 161k in the 90s (including 142k in 1998, placing as the 132nd best seller that year) and had sold 175k by August 2008 and 180k by September 2010.
Next to be certified is probably going to be 'Give It 2 Me' which is likely in the 190k-199k region. '4 Minutes' could be Platinum before the year is out too.
Does that push it up her best selling singles chart ?
Don't think so, it was always on track to be the next to pass 200k I think.
Immaculate Collection re-entered at #170 on 8th June. It seems like downloads/streaming data still weren't added (this data was absent throughout the midweeks) - rather strange. This was its 708th week in the Top 200.
Celebration was only a few places lower at #177, its 120th week charting.
Yeah that is strange, especially as we know the album was Top 100 on iTunes.
Do you have a complete run for Celebration?
Here we go! Better late than never
Celebration

Thank you Jay!
Jay
Don't suppose you have the completed chart run for The Immaculate Collection too, Jay? Apparently it's spent over 700 weeks in the Top 200 and I'm short of that.
NEW BPI CERTIFICATION!
'4 Minutes' has been certified Platinum for sales of 600k! That's her second Platinum single, following 'Hung Up', although eight singles in total have sold over 600k.
Last known sales were 575k from January 2018, so the song has sold/streamed 25k this year.
Hopefully when she is 60 we might get another update .
I managed to find out a couple of positions that were missing in 1995, and in 2008 a week at #198 was typo'd as #98.
ChartsPlus says Immaculate Collection is on 712 weeks as of this week (it's at #121 this week).
127 weeks of these weeks occurred pre-1994 (all of these positions are included in the chart run on the first page), while 585 weeks are from 1994 to the present date. It seems that we only have 535 of those weeks included in this thread (amongst the chart run on the first page, the amendments below & the new positions below).
The re-entry at #187 in Feb ‘16 was the 701st week in the chart, according to ChartsPlus. In a January 2010 issue they stated it had spent 700 weeks in the chart, so at least we know for sure that it saw no chart action from 2010 until early 2016. (In fact it didn’t chart at all from 06/09/08 to 04/02/16).

Thanks so much for that, Jay!
Most recent positions for Celebration (following on from #146):
-127-91...
Great to see it back in the Top 100! #53 on today's update too!
Celebration up to #59! #44 on downloads and #48 on streaming... no sign on the sales-only chart. Seems strange that Madonna should benefit from streaming! I guess the This Is Madonna playlist on Spotify helped out, even though none of the tracks appeared in the Top 200 Spotify chart on her birthday.
Hanging on the Top 100 at #95. Total stands at nearly 643k.
Music Week has revealed 'The Power of Goodbye' has sold 204,659 copies to date. Was certified Silver at the beginning of May so is averaging 200 to 250 copies a week, including streams.
^ quite a surprising number of weekly sales / streams
#92 - Music (1,358 sales) [1,336 physicals / 1 download / 21 streaming]
#94 - Erotica (1,352 sales) [1,352 physicals]
Music total - 1,631,840
Erotica total (since 1994) - 127,124
Poor Erotica with no streams. would have thought both albums would have had a few more downloads, not into triple figures but maybe like 50 odd.
Erotica only sold that much !!! That’s a surprise
In regards to the total sales for Erotica, it sold an estimate 405k in 1992 and an estimated 95k in 1993, so 627k in total.
That makes more sense 👍🏻
Also, I believe the last known official figure for Music was 1,594,045 from March 2006 - 37,795 in 12 years and 8 months.
For comparison, Like a Virgin and Ray of Light had sold 45-50k between November 2006 and October 2017 10 years and 11 months.
Celebration exits the Top 200 after 15 consecutive weeks:
RE: 146-127-91-59-95-114-122-144-162-160-166-176-183-157-196 (sixteenth entry: 09/08/18) 15w
Missed out by just 7 copies though!
Celebration makes a return to the album chart at #181.
Celebration is replaced by The Immaculate Collection, which makes its 50th entry in the chart. It has sold about 14k since it was last in the chart, bringing its total to nearly 3.75m.
Frozen has just been certified Platinum!
Last known sales for 'Frozen' happen to be a year ago (582,353). It's averaging over 300 copies a week.
It's her third Platinum certified song, following 'Hung Up' and '4 Minutes', although 11 of her songs in total have sold 600k+.
True blue and La Isla Bonita are being released for record store day in April . So they will have a slight increase from this .
The Immaculate Collection is #75 on today's midweek update. It's chart run so far this year:
RE: 137-135-146-148-148- (fiftieth entry: 14/02/19) 5w
The Immaculate Collection officially re-entered at #84. First time in the Top 100 in over 10 years!
Official Sales Chart: #57
Official Physicals Chart: #51
That's incredible . I wonder what pushed it?
From the https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/official-charts-flashback-looking-back-at-madonnas-like-a-prayer-number-1-30-years-ago-this-week__25817/regarding 'Like a Prayer':
We have a new entry to the album chart this week: The Very Best of Madonna: Radio Waves 1984-1995. It's an independent release from 2016 and seems to feature live versions of songs within the years stated in the title. No idea why it's charting now - me and Jay were discussing it and we think it's an error from the OCC, particularly as The Immaculate Collection has suddenly disappeared.
Nevertheless, it becomes Madonna's 29th charting album.
WTF ?
The sales of Music the album always shock me.
It’s never seen of as being one of her best albums by the fans.
Whenever I see lists of people rating her albums it’s always like the forgotten album.
Confessions felt much bigger than Music and seemed like a real moment in her career despite it being on lower sales although I guess Music followed Ray of Light and was released in a high sales climate.
Christmas 2000 had crazy high sales which helped Music a great deal. It sold 245,911 copies on Christmas week and that was at #4! As you say, being the follow-up to Ray of Light will have helped and I think that being linked to Guy Ritchie and living in the UK gave her even more exposure in the media.
Music was a huge era for her , American pie and music were both number 1 hits in the charts and in radio. She was adored during these times, not abused like she is now.
She had the Brixton gig her first live gig since 1993 and then she launched the tour .
This album is totally not forgotten by fans .

Did this for Kylie so here it is for Madonna: a look at where some Madonna's singles (post-1998) may have charted if released a week earlier or later (and still sold the same amount of copies):

I expected Me against the music to be a lot bigger .
Interesting regarding Love Profusion !
Celebration is back in at #140 on today's update, yay! Let's hope that's the last we see of this Radio Waves album!
so... i have a contact who works in the industry and he gave me some tea about the top 20 biggest Madonna songs in the UK
the old songs (pre 1994) stats are not the total of course because he only has access to the catalog from that year to the present
by that logic all the songs released post 1994 have its total stats.
Into the Groove (Gold, 176,982, 35K yearly average)

@Medellíam
Thank you very much for posting! I'll have a closer look at the figures later and see if I can work out some combined totals for the pre-1994 songs.
So interesting
Many thanks for the update!
Papa Don't Preach (Gold 135,989, 25K) too
Into the Groove (Gold, 176,982, 35K yearly average)
Estimated sales for the 80s were 766k, which would put its total on 943k to date. However, the OCC must have another estimate for its 80s sales as they had it on 957k as of August 2018. If it's averaging 35k a year, the OCC should have its total at 992k to date.
Like A Virgin (Gold, 196,646, 38-40K)
Estimated sales for the 80s are 741k, putting its total at 938k to date. Seems in line with the 892k from August 2018 and 925k from April 2019. A 40k yearly average puts its total on 932k.
Holiday (Gold, 217,190, 41K)
Estimated sales for the 80s were 537k. It missed the Top 100 year end for 1991 so less than ~100k sales. Like 'Into the Groove', the OCC must have other figures for its pre-1994 total as they had 'Holiday' on 878k as of August 2018. A 41k yearly average would put its total on 919k.
Like A Prayer (Gold, 434,013, 67K)
Estimated sales for the 80s were 412k, which would put its sales on 846k to date. The OCC had its total as 850k in April 2019, so the OCC's 80s estimate differs slightly. They had it on 792k as of August 2018, so 67k yearly average would put it on 859k to date.
Crazy For You (Gold, 160,402, 28K)
Estimated sales for the 80s were 494k and 179k for 1991, which puts its total at 833k. That's 67k higher than the 766k from August 2018 which is too high given it's only selling 28k a year, so again, the OCC must have different figures for pre-1994 sales. A 28k yearly average would put it on 794k to date.
Hung Up (Platinum, 744,730, 37K)
A post-1994 release, so we know this is a correct combined total. 'Hung Up' had sold 697k to August 2018 and 730k to April 2019.
Vogue (Gold, 222,426, 37K)
Sold an estimated 445k in 1990, putting its total at 667k to date. It sold 663k as of April 2019 so I think the OCC's 1990 estimate differs slightly, but not by too much.
True Blue (105,014, 19K)
Sold an estimated 522k in the 80s, putting its total at 627k to date. Seems like it could be right to me - a 19k yearly average would have put it on 608k last August, which again seems right.
4 Minutes (Plat, 638,169, 41K)
Had sold 597k to August 2018 and 627k to April 2019.
Frozen (608,281, 17K)
Had sold 602k to April 2019.
Beautiful Stranger (556,946, 6K)
Seems sadly forgotten despite being a huge smash in 1999.
La Isla Bonita (166,276, 30K)
Sold an estimated 393k in the 80s, putting its total at 559k to date. Could well be right - we didn't get sales for it from the OCC last August but its position on their list would suggest it's correct. I imagine the yearly average will increase after this year as the OCC confirmed it was far and away her best performing song on video streams.
Material Girl (220,473, 50K)
Sold an estimated 279k in the 80s, putting its total at 499k to date. Seems like it could be right, for the same reason as 'La Isla Bonita'.
Music (454,333, 12K)
Would have been on about 442k as of last August going by the yearly average.
American Pie (412,464, 9K)
Averaging more than 'Beautiful Stranger'?
Who's That Girl (40,009, 6K)
Sold an estimated 373k in the 80s, putting its total at 413k to date. Seems about right.
Don't Cry for Me Argentina (379,083, 9K)
Borderline (96,826, 17K)
Sold an estimated 281k in the 80s, putting its total at 378k to date. Again, seems about right.

Sold an estimated 593k in the 80s, putting its total at 729k to date. Seems right as it had at least sold over 697k as of August 2018.

Thank you raindrops9977 and Liam!
Madonna finally coming for millionaire status *.* I hope the OCC will do an article when it happens, because it’s always been a notably surprising fact that none of her singles had managed a million units.
Beautiful Stranger really does come across as one of her most forgotten big hits. Have to admit it’s never been a huge favourite of mine!
To think LAP and Vogue didn’t even use to be top 10 !!
Come through 1 million!
Fingers crossed the OCC will updated her best sellers list on her birthday next week and we'll see how my estimates add up!
Into The Groove being her all time biggest song in the UK always feels strange to me.
It’s definitely not what I’d consider her best and it’s not one I hear often as well.
I hear Vogue and Hung Up the most if i go out.
It's a case of all things coming together at the right time really. It is one of her most known hits anyway but a combination of full-on Madonna-mania taking off + high single sales + benefit of being a new release + Live Aid + Madonna getting married all helped it out in becoming her biggest in terms of sales.
I don't think it was properly released in the US. It was sent to clubs as the B-side to Angel and did really well in that area, but nothing more than that.
Take a Bow being, I believe, Madonna's longest running #1 in the US yet the first in like 10 years to miss the Top 10 in the UK is so strange!
Hard Candy - 357K
MDNA - 139,492
RH - 97,637 (Gold in a year)
@Medellíam
That's really good for Rebel Heart! Was not expecting it to be Gold in a year. I guess her streaming for her new stuff is better in the UK than anticipated.
Wasn’t take a bow released in December ?
That was the main problem .
They would never ever have expected it to miss the top 10 ! No promo
It still outsold human nature and bedtime story that peaked higher !
From Music Week:
Celebration re-entered the Top 200 official chart and Top 100 streaming chart on 25 July and has been charting on both ever since:
Top 200 Official Chart: 128-124-121-118-126-119-111
Top 100 Streaming Chart: 93-88-91-87-97-94-80
It sold 1,081 copies last week, made of 1,013 streams, 24 physicals and 44 downloads (thanks Jay for the info).
Great to see this being a consistent seller for her!
I've been reviewing my million sellers list and I reckon 'Into the Groove' must pass one million very soon, if it hasn't already. It had sold 958k as of August 2018, so would need to sell just over 700 copies a week to have passed by now. We found out in August that it was averaging 35k a year which works out at just under 700 copies a week.
https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/albums-turning-20-in-2020__28187/:
Dont Tell Me did not reach number 1 sadly.
Yeah, it might seem like a number one but Don't Tell Me "only" reached #4.
I'm pretty surprised that it's sold as much 1.64m since they only ended up releasing three singles from it (partially due to the conflict with Amazing / Impressive Instant), though I guess American Pie was tacked onto most EU editions.
American Pie def helped
Radio loved M at the time she was Lon it non stop !!
That’s a nice update !!
Nice update. Wonder if Bond tracks get a boost when a new one is released.
The films are on itv 2 repeatedly which helps I guess .
'Give It 2 Me' is finally Silver!!
Only 30k in over 9 years though, eek.
Deserved more!
Is a banger
Give it 2 me suffers because it was left of Celebration.
That's true. Definitely should have been on there, strange how Miles Away made the cut over it.
Yeah I've never got how Miles Away made it over so many of her hits...
Give It 2 Me is still a smash tbh!
Being left off what I presume is her album with most streams though is a bit wtf though especially when some songs made it what are less known to the GP / done worse commercially.
I really fancied her in the video for this back when I was 13 that definitely got a few strange comments from people in school when I’d tell them she was my crush.
^ I remember singing the hook to myself at school and one of my friends was like "wtf you like Madonna?!". This being off the back of a huge #1 hit too!
The Immaculate Collection is up to #82 on today's midweek update! It was last Top 100 a year ago and it's on track to appear at its highest position since 2008!
2020 chart run:
RE: 168-183-173-174 (fifty first entry: 27/02/20) 4w
RE: 175-168-133- (fifty second entry: 02/04/20) 3w
The greatest hits albums are back in force on the album chart. Immaculate collection is always a bigger draw for madonna than celebration.
Actually, Celebration is typically the go-to version. It had a fairly long chart run in 2018 (including a peak of #59 the month of Madonna's 60th) and in 2019 for the second half of the year. The Immaculate Collection did have a decent run in early 2019 (including a peak of #84). Strangely, it was a random release titled The Very Best of Madonna: Radio Waves 1984-1995 that got the streaming boost from the release of 'Medellin' and Madame X.
Celebration is generally the most popular physically since it gets all the streams, but The Immaculate Collection achieves higher physical sales whenever it is ahead. The Immaculate Collection has appeared in the sales chart but not the streaming chart since 2018, whilst Celebration has appeared in the streaming chart but not the sales chart since 2018.
Great to see it appearing and decently too! Is it just because people are streaming back catalogues while in lockdown?
Sales are up week-on-week for a lot of these compilation albums so lockdown is changing people's listening habits, but lack of physicals and new releases will push them further up the charts too. I notice it's up to #60 on iTunes too, so maybe it's discounted.
i have a question regarding spotify streams in the UK album chart.
do the separated streams of for example "Like A Prayer" count towards their respective releases or only one in particular? , for example the album version has 40m , TIC version 3m and the Celebration version 125m.
i remebered reading that in the US the record labels has to choose if the streams of a song will contribute to their parent album or a compilation.
I know that a song can benefit both the parent album and the highest physically bought compilation, but I don't know what happens if said song is slightly different and has its streams counted separately, like with 'Like a Prayer'. All versions would be combined when it came to compiling the singles chart, so maybe the same happens with the albums? I'm not too sure.
i knew about the most consumed record of the week but i didnt know it was based on physical sales only , thank you , but also does that mean that for example TIC is the most sold record of the week so the streams for the songs will count for both TIC and their respective albums , isn't that double counting?
i wish there was a place were all the OCC rules were explained.
btw do you know what is the youtube streams ratio in the UK ,i know the US gave more value to audio streams but i want to know what about the UK because her recurrent stats are on an all time high with 2.5m daily views acording to kworb and i want to know how much those stats help her catalog.
Yeah, they get double counted. Video and audio streams are counted at the same rate: ad-funded streams are counted at a radio of 1:600 and premium streams are counted at a rate of 1:100 (1:1200 and 1:200 when on ACR).
thank you also one last question , do live performances from her youtube account counts towards a song total or in the case of a tour upload like "Vogue" for example to their respective tour official releases only (SST/ IGTTYAS/MDNAtour)? also does it depends if its tagged as "music" or not?
also from what i know the ACR rule only decreases the stats that will be used in the singles charts , not the total consumption so she has nothing to lose from that lol.
Presumably all tour videos count toward the respective song, just like a bought live audio would count as a sale toward its respective song. I guess a stream of tour video would count toward its respective tour album but I'm not really that sure.
Yes you're right, ACR does only affect the singles chart rather than song totals.
thank you
Wondering where is TIC in the last UK midweek.
I really hope 'Madame X' can go Silver sometime soon. A masterpiece, truly a masterpiece
Just sneaks into the Top 100 at #100!

#66 on downloads.
UK Mid-Week (Monday)
91 (RE) The Immaculate Collection
hopefully it will make it...
Great to see a 30 year old album return to the top 100.
Would’ve loved to have seen Celebration be the hits style album to return though.
TIC fell out the Top 100 by the Tuesday midweek and placed #120 officially.
2020 chart run:
RE: 168-183-173-174 (fifty first entry: 27/02/20) 4w
RE: 175-168-133-100-125-120 (fifty second entry: 02/04/20) 6w
It's currently placed at #81 on the Album Download Chart with ~100 downloads (#100 managed 81 downloads). It sold 1,075 overall, so just under 1k is coming from streams (assuming physicals are close to 0 at this point).
Perhaps benefiting from the recent surge of Bedtime Stories and the release of the 'I Don't Search I Find' remixes, TIC has now entered the Top 10 on iTunes, so could be looking at a nice boost on the chart this week if it can remain stable.
TIC currently has a peak of #21 on the Album Download Chart. Its full chart run:

The Immaculate Collection is #49 on today's update!
What's caused the surge?
iTunes have discounted lots of greatest hits albums and are promoting it on the main page.
This is the current iTunes Top 10:
1. ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits
2. Simply Red - The Greatest Hits
3. Various Artists - 100 Hits Wartime Memories
4. Carpenters - Gold: Greatest Hits
5. Drake - Dark Lane Demo Tapes
6. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
7. Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
8. Gerry Cinnamon - The Bonny
9. Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits
10. R.E.M. - In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003
! That's amazing.
Is a top 100 re-entry looking likely for tomorrow?
That's great news! <3
Re-enters the Top 100 at #66 - highest position since 2008!
Downloads: #11 (new peak)
Sales: #38 (new peak)
Amazing, getting those new peaks!
TIC is #55 today!
Think I made a typo - it was #52 on Monday. #53 yesterday and #66 today.
TIC starts at #93 on the first midweek. Taken a tumble on downloads now though so will no doubt fall out by Friday.
Love seeing these updates !!
Great updates! That entire top 12(?) deserves to be a million seller list, but especially the top 5
The list has really changed through the last ten years!!
Like A Prayer will become her biggest stellar in time !
Like A Prayer being her top seller over time would feel very right tbh!
It’s moved up the list a lot though I remember a time it was around 8th / 9th.
'Me Against the Music' has sold 184k!
https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/12-huge-female-pop-collaborations-on-the-official-chart__29839/
MATM was beaten to number 1 by Busted .
Not sure why this didn’t take off . It’s a decent song !!
I'm guessing it just didn't live up to the hype. It was still way bigger than any of Madonna's releases that year and performed in line with Britney's hits from her previous album.
Those sales are pretty abysmal for such a high-profile collaboration It's not a favourite song of mine tbh, but I still expected about 5 times as much in terms of sales!
'The Immaculate Collection' returns at #98!
Her back catalogue is really picking up in streams I'd say. TIC has collected already 4 weeks in top 100 this year without new music.
I think greatest hits collections in general are doing very well, helped by lockdown too possibly and a lack of actual new albums coming!
