look forward to seeing this biggrin.gif don't you mean 'best of the last 120 months though'? 10 years with 12 months each unsure.gif

only 10 songs from 2003 - I'm glad we agree that it was the worst year of the decade! Based on the amount of songs in the countdown at least, I had only 6 out of 100 from 2003, 2 of those between 96 and 100 :/

2003 wasn't a great year but it was certainly a good year. It had 3 of my top 10! ohmy.gif

To be honest, my father was taken very ill right at the beginning of the year, and as a result my interest in music disappeared into the background; other than being aware of the charts which were largely awful in 2003 IMHO.

Of the 10 songs included from 2003 none of the songs failed to reach the UK Top 40 because I did not have the time or inclination to look beyond the charts that year.

For #200 - 101 I will attempt to copy with video links, but highlight one video in each segment of five:

Posted by: gooddelta 12th December 2009, 04:05 PM

excellent start, love the Alisha's Attic song, such a forgotten gem - I have their greatest hits album (unlike anybody else I expect laugh.gif)

Posted by: thisispop 12th December 2009, 04:11 PM

191 Rose Elinor Dougall & the Distractions - Start/Stop/Synchro 2009 UK Flop

This divine track was released by the former Pipette featuring folk/rock musicians who had been previously working with Elly Jackson before she jettisoned them to jump on the retro synth pop bandwagon.

Posted by: thisispop 12th December 2009, 04:29 PM

190 Candie Payne - One More Chance 2007 UK Flop (#122)

This perennial under Nonsuch BJSC consideration track performed by the former LIPA student and frequent model and younger sister of two Liverpudlian brothers one of whom is a Zuton and the other a member of The Stands , was produced by Mark Ronson and featured a Bonnie & Clyde-esque video. Incredibly it still flopped.

189 Athlete - Wires 2005 UK#4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uriGngTXyrE
188 Kings Of Convenience - Toxic Girl 2001 UK#44 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAx6-7ZIdjM

184 Melys - Chinese Whispers 2001 UK Flop

This Welsh indie rock band topped John Peel Festive Fifty countdown by his listeners in 2001. Sadly no chart success was forthcoming from this wonderful track.

182 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero 2009 UK#49 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxZGYGojPeE

Amazing!

Posted by: Aled. 12th December 2009, 06:22 PM

Shoulda Woulda Coulda & Maybe wub.gif Both utterly brilliant imo.

Posted by: thisispop 12th December 2009, 07:02 PM

180 Katie Melua - Closest Thing To Crazy 2003 UK#10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCANRxAy4oA
179 Ladyhawke – Paris Is Burning 2008 UK#61 (UK#47 in 2009 Reissue) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1HDZNR9cY4
178 Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT remix) 2006 UK#55

This Canadian #1 smash hit is equally brilliant in its indie disco original version or this brilliant MSTRKRFT remix which added to the zombie horror video and the very stong anti-war message make a very potent recording that should have been far more successful in the UK for Emily Haines' outfit.

177 Mousse T ft Emma Lanford - Is It Cos I'm Cool? 2004 UK#9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzc_DJARYIY
176 Robbie Williams - Eternity 2001 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzFV5X9Qbgc

173 Amy Winehouse - Take The Box 2004 UK#57 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0CUxRG9Y8Q
172 Beck - Lost Cause 2002 UK Flop

This maverick artist released his most introspective album in 2002. This track is rather personal to me at a time when things were not so great, and some how made things seem not so bad .....

171 Cat Power - The Greatest 2006 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJfQXS1hKDo

Posted by: thisispop 13th December 2009, 02:48 PM

170 Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch 2005 UK#42

Where can you go wrong an electropop group formed in 1999 at Paul McCartney's LIPA Fame school, named after the best track on Roxy Music debut album. One thing is certain this is far less annoying than the Ting Tings and musically superior to any act that Simon Cowell could manufacture.

169 Badly Drawn Boy - You Were Right 2002 UK#9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1BNOzDnOLI
168 Embrace - Wonder 2001 UK#14 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjVb1czZpXg

161 Depeche Mode - John The Revelator 2006 UK#18

The best Depeche Mode song since Enjoy The Silence IMHO. The lyrics are incredibly potent political stuff. Just watch the video to see why.

Posted by: thisispop 13th December 2009, 03:24 PM

160 Editors - Smokers Outside The Hospital Beds 2007 UK#7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBhWAvsLH6A
159 Bat For Lashes - What's A Girl To Do 2007 UK Flop (#141)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EICkZWEzFGE
158 Aimee Mann - Save Me 2000 UK Flop (#102)

This song was a Grammy & Oscar nominated track that help catapult this acclaimed melancholic singer/songwriter briefly back into the lime light.

157 Foo Fighters - Long Road To Ruin 2007 UK#35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9xiobb4yqM
156 Nelly Furtado - Try 2004 UK#15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOY6IeQS6KA

154 Richard Hawley – Tonight The Streets Are Ours 2007 UK#40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eBkrs4YpzI

152 Charlotte Hatherley - Behave 2007 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVin_npzHgU

151 Amanda Palmer - Oasis 2009 UK Flop

The former(?) Dresdon Doll released this sarcastic Beach Boys inspired Ben Folds produced track about being raped to critical acclaim, even though the song and video got banned for its flippant delivery of the serious subject matter.

Posted by: thisispop 13th December 2009, 06:33 PM

150 Lucie Silvas - What You're Made Of 2004 UK#7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PreNXo5Fifk
149 Super Furry Animals – Juxtaposed With U 2001 UK#14 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jw7u4f-Ujg
148 Queens Of The Stone Age - No One Knows 2002 UK#15 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x86ly3_queens-of-the-stone-age-no-one-know_music
147 Modest Mouse – Float On 2004 UK#46 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOzphMgOETA

146 Kate Bush - King Of The Mountain 2005 UK#4

Her only single of the past 15 years saw Britain's greatest female singer/songwriter return with an enigmatic song about running away from fame. The perfect antidote to Reality television that has dominated the decade and produced nonentities like Paris Hilton; Jade Goody & Katie Price.

Posted by: thisispop 13th December 2009, 06:45 PM

145 Client - Zerox Machine 2007 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Bhu1KnynQ
144 Jayhawks - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me 2000 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP_ROIFMd08
143 Nerina Pallot - Alien 2001 UK Flop (#98)

The song that made me (musically) fall in love with the Jersey born Arsenal (boo hoo cry.gif) supporting singer/songwriter. Why she was never a Dido sized popularity success as a recording artist remains one of the great musical mysteries of the decade to me.

142 PNAU ft Ladyhawke - Embrace 2008 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_4y31whgcU
141 White Stripes – Fell In Love With a Girl 2002 UK#21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q27BfBkRHbs

Posted by: Medicated Soap 13th December 2009, 09:50 PM

Some fantastic singles here. wub.gif Fell in Love with a Girl, Embrace, King of the Mountain, Float On, and No One Knows are all excellent.

Posted by: gooddelta 13th December 2009, 09:53 PM

Watch Out Bille was my favourite song from Dear Frustrated Superstar wub.gif

Posted by: thisispop 15th December 2009, 03:01 PM

140 Amy Macdonald - Mr Rock & Roll 2007 UK#12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR7SdaXHPH4
139 Late Of The Pier – Space And The Woods 2008 UK Flop

I have high hopes this Nottingham based act will develop in the next decade like Muse developed in the 00s. A fantastic anthem of teenage disaffection that is simultaneously retro yet futuristic..

138 Libertines – What A Waster 2002 UK#37 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs4DgqlIzXI
137 Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out 2002 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QyVil0dwhk
136 Elbow - One Day Like This 2008 UK#35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQIdXKz4sE8

Posted by: thisispop 15th December 2009, 03:31 PM

134 Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over The Rainbow 2001 UK#42 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht341mwVpr8

133 Graham Coxon - Freakin' Out 2004 UK#19

The former Blur guitarist returned with a rocker influenced by the Skids' Into The Valley, that could easily have been a massive Blur anthem had the band not imploded due to Damon's extra curricular ideas.

132 Jarvis Cocker – Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time 2007 UK#36 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1oMtwmTaNQ
131 Keane - Bedshaped 2004 UK#10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGzW2MwVssI

Posted by: thisispop 15th December 2009, 03:48 PM

130 Manic Street Preachers - The Masses Against The Classes 2000 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDg9TmsqUPQ
129 Muse - Invincible 2007 UK#21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7rgni2nvuE

128 Zero 7 ft Sia - Somersault 2004 UK#56

This lovely downtempo electronica track featuring the vocals of Australian singer/songwriter Sia sadly failed to repeat the success of the Simple Things album and Destiny single.

127 Thrills - Whatever Happened To Corey Haim? 2004 UK#22 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E_l82UqcLQ
126 Outkast - Hey Ya 2004 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wl6R8u6Zus

123 Duran Duran - What Happens Tomorrow 2005 UK#11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AbVZq-OEbM
122 Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist 2008 UK#20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7eOGf0mnYg

121 INXS - Afterglow 2006 UK Flop

The song was written by Andrew Farriss and Desmond Child, and was a tribute to Michael Hutchence, one of INXS' founders, who was alleged to have committed suicide in 1997. In singing the song, J. D. Fortune, winner of Rock Star: INXS, described his role in Hutchence's legacy—his "afterglow". One thing is certain this OZ#10 (which spent nearly half a year in the Oz Top 50) & USA#22 hit is light years better than any of the dreadful UK X-Factor winning first singles ....

120 Killers - Somebody Told Me 2005 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFyP8MMDc6Q
119 Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes 2006 UK#4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7aOWIFgIZQ

117 Coral - In The Morning 2005 UK#6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkG4NoIscWg

116 Pulp - Bad Cover Version 2002 UK#27

The original anti Simon Cowell Reality TV song, assembled by Jarvis Cocker using look & soundalikes of famous musicians to record a Band Aid type song and video featuring acerbic lyrics with regards to the horror of Pop Idol and released to take on Gareth Gates mauling of Unchained Melody. Even Jarvis could not have foreseen the increased dominance that these Reality TV shows have over the UK public, little wonder he moved to France.

Posted by: thisispop 15th December 2009, 04:30 PM

115 Basement Jaxx - Romeo 2001 UK#6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4Y3A3oJRM

114 Camille - Money Note 2008 UK Flop

This French singer/songwriter delivered this sarcastic song in her unusual Bjork/Kate Bush vocals about aspiring to be like Mariah Carey and all those other technically excellent singers with no individuality that appear on TV Music talent shows this decade.

113 LeAnn Rimes - Can't Fight The Moonlight 2000 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjMGtb3MDWo
112 Air - Radio #1 2001 UK#31 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkoXHqKXFQg
111 Norah Jones - Don't Know Why 2002 UK#59 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO4dxvguQDk

110 Lady GaGa - Poker Face 2009 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH6CpnhwIiw
109 Nizlopi - JCB Song 2005 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3WhQB7Hq0Q
108 Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man 2006 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JgeuPZaERA
107 Mark Ronson ft Daniel Merriweather - Stop Me 2007 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4kBr5WWiBM

106 Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes - The Block Party 2001 UK#16

This track was the only solo hit by the TLC rapper. This had a futuristic yet retro early 1980s feel to it a good 7/8 years before it was in vogue to do so, with a video directed by Hype Williams. But then again Left Eye always was a Supernova.

Posted by: thisispop 15th December 2009, 04:51 PM

105 Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On 2006 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVNK_VDQY8I

104 Divine Comedy - Perfect Lovesong 2001 UK#42

A song title that is a perfect description. Musically a delightful Beatles meets Beach Boys sound on the track. Neil Hannon's chamber pop band should have been far bigger IMHO.

103 Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You 2004 UK#18 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQuQGG3FlY
102 Kate Nash - Foundations 2007 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYzQFQo6UgM

OK, not that I'm into the top 100 I will post links to all videos, but post more than one video in each bunch of 5 (if I can find it non-embedded) if the song semi flopped in the UK.

100 Margaret Berger - Will You Remember Me Tomorrow 2006 UK Flop

Thank you to the Buzzjack Song Contest. This is a brilliant albeit slightly cheesy EuroDisco Steps/S Club 7 type tune was only a Top 20 hit in her native Norway, but I still think it sounds like a massive #1 hit for the right artist at the right time.

99 M.I.A. - Paper Planes 2008 UK#19 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gMFZLcSJL0
98 Anastacia - Left Outside Alone 2004 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS7YCPKbSvw
97 Duffy - Rockferry 2007 UK#45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0RtfW1tm5E
96 Wolfman ft Pete Doherty - For Lovers 2004 UK#7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLY0eUtVlXo

94 Ash - Burn Baby Burn 2001 UK#13 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW8mEMqiNhc
93 U2 - Beautiful Day 2000 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVp5r_RXbTI

92 Emiliana Torrini - Jungle Drum 2009 UK Flop

One of many great singles introduced to me via Radio 2's brilliant Radcliffe & Maconie evening show (which I'm listening to right now). This song by the Icelandic singer/songwriter (who wrote Kylie's Slow) went on to be a massive hit in Europe topping several national charts including Germany.

91 DB Boulevard - Point Of View 2002 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I5NrJr6tic

Posted by: thisispop 16th December 2009, 09:12 PM

90 Cyndi Lauper - Into The Nightlife 2008 UK Flop

This song might have reached #1 in the US Dance charts but despite promo in the UK on TV shows such as Loose Women & the Graham Norton show radio would not touch it with a barge poll. You can bet had this track been recorded by Rihanna; Britney Spears or Nelly Furtado it would have gone straight to A-List on Radio 1.

89 Train - Drops Of Jupiter 2001 UK#10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS0CV_GWEMI

88 Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes 2000 UK Flop (#82)

The Electric Landlady released this joyous sardonic track in the last few months prior to her tragic death. This track was covered by Bette Midler and featured in the HBO show Sex and the City. It would later be adopted by Catherine Tate as the theme tune for her BBC TV show and feature on the soundtrack to British film Kinky Boots.

87 Ladyhawke - Magic 2009 UK Flop

New Zealander Pip Brown finally got round to releasing the best track off her eponymous debut retro electropop album. It did however go to #31 in her native country and caused the album to finally reach #1 their in its 61st week in the chart.

86 Straw - Sailing Off The Edge Of The World 2001 UK#52

English melodic rock band released their final single (a lovely World Party-esque sounding track) of four singles before they were dropped by WEA and split as a result "never to return".

From these 'Paper Planes' and 'For Lovers' are both excellent songs, 'For Lovers' is so underrated and utterly beautiful. Margaret is good too...

81 Ben Folds ft Regina Spektor - You Don't Know Me 2008 UK Flop

This very quirky lead-off single from Ben Folds' third studio album, Way to Normal was introduced to me via listening to Jonathan Ross' Saturday Radio 2 show.

Posted by: thisispop 16th December 2009, 10:05 PM

80 Aqualung - Strange and Beautiful 2002 UK#7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MVS5njkx6U

79 Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine 2006 UK Flop

The title track and final single released from her third album and only release this decade, is typical Fiona quirky humour at its best as exemplified by the self-directed video.

78 Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 2009 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x86jjo_kelly-clarkson-my-life-would-suck-w_music
77 Madonna - American Life 2003 UK#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DVjEgmvVGA

76 Sia - Soon We'll Be Found 2008 UK Flop

The Australian singer/songwriter really should have had a major hit with this third single release from her Some People Have Real Problems albums. This track has been recorded for potential inclusion on Christina Aguilera's 4th album due for release in 2010.

Posted by: gooddelta 16th December 2009, 10:08 PM

love that Sia song wub.gif interesting to hear that about Christina - sounds promising if that's the sort of sound she's going for next time around

I'm shocked to see My Life Would Suck Without You here, it's the most generic song of the year - of course that means that I like it (although nowhere near enough to put it anywhere near my chart of the decade) but I didn't know you liked it so much!

Posted by: thisispop 17th December 2009, 07:34 PM

75 Lady GaGa - Paparazzi 2009 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgKrzdaDQMw
74 Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams 2005 UK#5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdG0vDZJcJ0

73 Elbow - Powder Blue 2001 UK#41

I don't care what others think, this is by a mile their best song, and it does not need to rip off Hey Jude either. Stunning lyrically imaginery that has heroin written all over it. Two addicts lost in their mutual love of each other and their drug of choice... "Stumble through the crowds together, they're trying to ignore us, that's OK. I'm proud to be the one you hold when the shakes begin..."
Whilst the slightly disturbing sax followed by the smashing glass at the end surely symbolises the girl OD-ing and the shattering of the illusion of happiness.

72 Divine Comedy - Come Home Billy Bird 2004 UK#25

Another melancholic song that tells a story of a father and businessman in a rush to get home to watch his son play rugby. The female vocals on the chorus are by former Kenickie vocalist Lauren Laverne (now a BBC 6 Music DJ).

71 Bluetones - After Hours 2002 UK#26

The third song on the bounce that tells a story ... this time the joys of partaking in private alcohol consumption behind closed doors in your local, all over an old school melodic Kinks/Madness type track. Great Bugsy Malone pastiche video too.

Posted by: thisispop 17th December 2009, 07:45 PM

70 Marina & The Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot 2009 UK Flop

The second single by an artist who releases her debut album in 2010. Hopefully this Welsh singer/songwriter heavily influenced by the likes of Kate Bush & Lene Lovich will be huge next year. This is her best offering that I have heard to date.

69 REM - The Great Beyond 2000 UK#3
68 Sara Bareilles - Love Song 2008 UK#4
67 Coldplay - Viva La Vida 2008 UK#1

66 Belle & Sebastian – Step Into My Office Baby 2003 UK#32

The legendary Scottish folk rockers scored a Top 40 hit with this Trevor Horn produced effort of "how's your father" at work. I love the 1970s era Carry On meets the Robin Askwith Confessions Of A .... series of adult movies feel to this video as well.

Posted by: gooddelta 17th December 2009, 07:48 PM

Love Song biggrin.gif excellent to see that here, I recall like me that you charted it way before it was released here...

65 TV Eyes - She's A Study 2008 UK Flop

Back in the early 1990s at the heighth of grunge and raprock a band called Jellyfish who made unfashionable euphoric power pop songs inspired by The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Who, Queen, Badfinger, ELO, Supertramp, etc were loved by the critics but the public did not get them even though they were miles better than The Feeling, The Hoosiers, etc. They sadly split after 3 years and two albums and went on to work with artists like Aimee Mann, Beck & Fiona Apple. In 2006 they reformed minus their former lead singer/drummer and with a new name but this time time moved their sound on circa 13 years to be inspired by early 1980s synth electro pop to be inspired by Gary Numan, Duran Duran, Human League, New Order, etc. Of course they failed again to be a success. Although in 2008 Moby licensed this record for release in the UK where it received non playlist airplay on Radio 1 & Radio 2 but again without success. One thing is certain this is infinitely better and cleverer than anything off La Roux's debut album.

64 Robbie Williams - Feel 2002 UK#4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vml2xJi5BWE
63 Arctic Monkeys - I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor 2005 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm69M3jtZl4
62 Aaliyah - More Than A Woman 2002 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NLUthL6-BU

60 Prodigy - Girls 2004 UK#19

In 2004 Liam Howlett took a big risk he recorded an album without the vocals of Keith Flint and Maxim Reality. This the lead track featured instead The Magnificent Ping Pong Bitches which at the time the music media assumed it was his wife Natalie Appleton & sister (and parter of Oasis' Liam Gallagher) Nicole Appleton on distorted vocals under a pseudonym. A backlash took place and the single limped into the UK Top 20. Despite that I still think this is the best track the Prodigy have recorded this decade.

59 Modest Mouse - Dashboard 2007 UK Flop

The Seattle based American alternative rock band led by Isaac Brock featured new guitarist (& British musical legend) Johhny Marr on composition & a very distinctive guitar riff on a song vastly superior to what his former Smiths partner managed this decade. A far greater success in the USA this sea shanty themed video features Seasick Steve as the bartender.

58 David Gray - Babylon 2000 UK#5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT8Q7Y5nq-E
57 Britney Spears - Toxic 2004 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9kVZ1Zperc

55 Amerie - 1 Thing 2005 UK#4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp-zuRddeKI
54 Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? 2004 UK#4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTfbCOPApsQ

53 Pipettes - Pull Shapes 2006 UK#26

Heaven. Featuring the now only remaining member of this lineup Gwenno on lead vocals on this delightful Motown, meets Northern Soul, meets 1960s Girlgroups track (that blatantly inspired Xenomania to come up with the inferior The Promise for Girls Aloud). The track peaked about 25 places too low in the summer of 2006 chart.

52 Queens Of The Stone Age - The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret 2000 UK#31

Josh Homme Stoner neo-psychedelic hard rock outfit released this quite stunning piece of music at the beginning of the decade that has rarely been equalled or surpassed.

51 Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out 2004 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZGcw9HHOkU

50 Little Boots - New In Town 2009 UK#13 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9ycfa_little-boots-new-in-town-hq_music

49 David Bowie - Everyone Say "Hi!" 2002 UK#20

His 61st & last UK Top 40 hit (to date); sees Britain's greatest ever male artist in rather thoughtful yet humourous mood saying hello to people who have died with a song that musically recalls both his Absolute Beginners single & Hunky Dory album.

48 Lily Allen - F$%* @#u 2009 UK Flop (Euro Monster Hit)

Internationally G.W.B. (Guess Who Badman = George W Bush) as the demo was known as, this is Lily's biggest hit. Top 10 all over Europe including #1 in Belgium; A top 40 hit in Australia & Canada & a Billboard Top 100 hit, it has recently topped the Billboard Dance Charts. Strangely never released as a single in the UK.

47 Spiller ft Sophie Ellis Bextor - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) 2000 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnrvliNNR2A

46 Black Box Recorder - The Facts Of Life 2000 UK#20

The only UK Top 40 hit for former Autuers frontman Luke Haines; former Jesus & Mary Chain member John Moore & female vocallist Sarah Nixey on this incredibly well remembered pop classic.

44 Liberty X - Just A Little 2002 UK#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOMFS0fGwuQ

43 Suzie McNeil - Lonely 2008 UK Flop

The former 4th placed & highest placed female in Rockstars:INXS whom later went on to tour as support to P!nk scored a native Canadian #2 hit behind Madonna's 4 Minutes with this classic sounding adult orientated rock track me of fellow Canadian's Heart.

42 Riva ft Dannii Minogue - Who Do You Love Now? 2001 UK#3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEDVnE5jjpE

41 Sheryl Crow - Soak Up The Sun 2002 UK#16

This track that was one of the top 40 selling tracks in the USA in 2002 just oozes summer in California and reminds me of classic mid 1970s Fleetwood Mac. Backing vocals from Liz Phair. Great video. What more can you ask for.

40 Lady GaGa - Bad Romance 2009 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbemqh_lady-gaga-bad-romance_music
The most recent song in my decade Top 40 countdown, one of 8 UK#1's in my Decade end Top 40 by the artist of 2009.

39 Dandy Warhols - You Were The Last High 2003 UK#34 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ywrn_dandy-warhols-you-were-the-last-hig_music

Fronted by Courtney Taylor-Taylor this Portland US based indie/alternative art rock band were always too clever for their own good. This track is a truly brilliant pastiche of synth-pop music in 1981, and the video is a wonderful homage to the debut Duran Duran single "Planet Earth" perhaps because the track was co-produced by Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes and features Simon Le Bon guesting on backing vocals.

38 Melanie C ft Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes - Never Be The Same Again 2000 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2219r_melanie-cleft-eye-never-be-the-same_music
In retrospect how could a collaboration between the two most talented members of the best UK girlgroup of the 1990s & best USA girlgroup of the 1990s not be brilliant.

37 Susanna & The Magical Orchestra - Love Will Tear Us Apart 2006 UK Flop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHhVydgvuAc

This Norwegian act championed by Radio 2 DJ Mark Radcliffe produced this atmospheric Portishead-like cover version of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". It featured in two 3rd season episodes of the American medical drama Grey's Anatomy and on 3rd season of Skins. But it also because the Xmas #1 in New Zealand in 2006.

36 No Doubt - It's My Life 2004 UK#17 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x16hui_no-doubt-its-my-life_music

This cover of the 1984 Talk Talk pop classic saw No Doubt have a worldwide Top 20 hit. Sadly this is their last single to date prior to Gwen's solo excursions.

35 Stereophonics - Dakota 2005 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x73r5_stereophonics-dakota_music
To date Kelly Jones' Welsh rock outfit only UK#1 hit or US charting single.

34 Libertines - Don't Look Back Into The Sun 2003 UK#11 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1yj6s_dont-look-back-into-the-sun_music
The fourth single released by The Libertines. It was released as a single only, therefore not appearing on any albums.
In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Don't Look Back into the Sun" at number 5 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

33 Metric - Gimme Sympathy 2009 UK Flop http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8rqk1_metric-gimme-sympathy_music

The Canadian indie rock band fronted by Emily Haines failed to chart in the UK with this stunning single despite support from Radio 6 Music & Radio 2.

Posted by: thisispop 27th December 2009, 04:03 PM

32 Nelly Furtado - Say It Right 2007 UK#10 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1echi_nelly-furtado-say-it-right_music
Probably the best Timbaland production of his career. This track reached USA#1, and went Top 10 all around the world.

31 Semisonic - Chemistry 2001 UK#35 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xs0pb_semisonic-chemistry_music

The title track of the US Power Pop band third and final album became a minor UK & USA hit in the spring of 2001.

30 Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars 2006 UK#6 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xtwli_snow-patrol-chasing-cars_fun
This USA Top 5 hit has spent 94 weeks in the UK Top 75 to date, the longest chart runner this decade. Unlike a lot of similar indie anthems of the decade (Mr Brightside; Sex On Fire; Take Me Out; Seven Nation Army) this track has not been dulled to my music tastes via over exposure.

29 Portishead - The Rip 2008 UK Flop http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbk9xr_portishead-the-rip_music

This folk-rock meets Krautrock electronica track taken from the challenging Third Portishead album has been covered by Radiohead as evidence of its strange beauty.

Posted by: thisispop 27th December 2009, 04:35 PM

28 Doves - There Goes The Fear 2002 UK#3 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3aaw_doves-there-goes-the-fear_music
The first single from Doves' second studio album The Last Broadcast gave the Manchester group their biggest hit to date.

27 Goldfrapp - Lovely Head 2001 UK#68 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vbra_goldfrapp-lovely-head-2_music

This stunning atmospheric cinemanic track was released as the album's first single in May 2000. In November 2001, the song was re-issued as a double A-side single with "Pilots (On a Star)". In 2002, "Lovely Head" appeared in the Guy Ritchie film Swept Away where it was the only good thing about that awful movie.

26 A-ha - Summer Moved On 2000 UK#33 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xiz4v_ahasummermovedon_music

Their first single in more than 6 years. The song was originally hastily written after a-ha agreed to a one-time reunion at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in 1998. There had been a lot of bad feelings between the band members, and each was hesitant to reunite. The thunderous success at the concert in performing only 2 songs inspired the band to reunite after a 4 year hiatus to record their sixth album for release in 2000. This song became a #1 radio hit in much of Europe including all of Scandinavia.

25 Embrace - Nature's Law 2006 UK#2 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1g4nx_embrace-natures-law_music
This triumphant comeback song produced by Youth went into chart infamy after it lost out on the UK#1 spot (to Ne-Yo's So Sick) due to their record company Independiente messing up on the eligibility of one of the formats for the single.

Posted by: gooddelta 27th December 2009, 04:55 PM

Nature's Law is quite possibly my favourite indie single of all time

I bought it on CD and DVD, so it's a shame one of those didn't count to the chart if what you say is true sad.gif

24 Sugababes - Overload 2000 UK#6 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfq1k_sugababes-overload_music

The first and quite frankly best IMHO single by the UK's finest girlgroup trio. I wonder what odds you could have got in 2000 that the Sugababes would still be going into 2010 with none of the original Sugababes in their lineup? As this year's Xmas TOTP proved the new lineup may well look more aesthically pleasing on the eye; and they certainly seem to be tighter than ever with their harmonies ...... but it ain't the Sugababes IMHO it's Trigger's Broom syndrome.

23 Oasis - Sunday Morning Call 2000 UK#4 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqut0_oasis-sunday-morning-call_music
For me this brilliant Noel sung track was virtually the only redeeming thing to come out of Oasis 4th & worst studio album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants probably because Noel decided to rip off classic 1970s Pink Floyd for a change rather than the usual Beatles rip offs.

22 Take That - Rule The World 2007 UK#2 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3o1kq_take-that-rule-the-world_music
In the same way chart historians look back to the chart in 1967 and are utterly bemused at how Engelbert Humperdinck's Please Release Me kept The Beatles' most critically acclaimed single Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane at #2, I'm sure they will do the same in 40 years time with Leona Lewis' sterile (well it was written by the bloke from One Republic who makes Chris Martin seem like Thom Yorke in comparison) Bleeding Love kept this wonderful the best a-ha verse never written with the best Bee Gees chorus never written at #2. The fact this song still hangs around the Top 200 long after Bleeding Love has disappeared is proof of its greatness.

21 Keane - Everybody's Changing 2004 UK#4 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbkq9l_keane-everybodys-changing_music

Originally their debut release on the independent Fierce Panda label, it became their second single taken from their major label debut Hopes and Fears album. Internationally it is their most successful single including peaking at #2 in Italy.

20 Girls Aloud - Biology 2005 UK#4 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1rlhu_girls-aloud-biology_music

The track that is probably this decade's ultimate "this is awful" on first hearing .... to "this is the best thing since sliced bread" a dozen plays later. Surely Xenomania's finest 3 minutes plus. By far the best thing GA have ever done iMHO.

19 Christina Aguilera - Beautiful 2003 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x173hz_beautiful_music

Probably the best ever song written by Linda Perry. This Grammy winning ballad effort was a global hit reaching the top spot in the UK; Australia; Canada; Ireland; New Zealand & Romania and peaked at #2 in the USA.

Posted by: gooddelta 27th December 2009, 06:32 PM

I love Rule The World much much more than Bleeding Love, but still, both are classics that I doubt will be forgotten particularly seeing as Bleeding Love was a worldwide hit - from musical merit in many countries where she never promoted/had Cowell related hype

Rule The World was sadly a flop everywhere else it was released, peaking at a disasterous #15 in Germany sad.gif definitely a UK classic but there was no shame losing out to Bleeding Love in my opinion - both were decade defining songs

I think I'm possibly the only person in the world who doesn't go bat$h!t crazy over Biology.

18 Vitamin C - Graduation (Friends Forever) 2000 UK Flop http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv08w_vitamin-c-graduation-song_music

This Spice Girls sounding track was written by US singer Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick in 1999. It was a sleeper hit only ever peaking at USA#38 despite spending 43 weeks on the Top 100. However it reached #2 in Australia. More interestingly OMD frontman Andy McCluskey freely admits to being "inspired" by this track to write "Whole Again" the monster Atomic Kitten UK#1 smash hit.

17 Will Young - Leave Right Now 2003 UK#1 (and Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3wdg9_will-young-leave-right-now_music

Written by Eg White, this Ivor Novello winning track was the opening single from Will's second album Friday's Child and reached the top spot in both the UK as well as Ireland.

only peaked at #5 in my personal chart ohmy.gif it's a very messy song - very good - but all over the place

Posted by: gooddelta 27th December 2009, 06:51 PM

I assume this Vitamin C song is this track you referred to once in BJSC as an Aussie #2 you were considering sending

never heard it before, very good song actually, sounds like it's based on Pachelbel's Canon in places a la Coolio's C U When U Get There - very classy sounding track - I would have given you at least 8 points for this if you'd sent it to BJSC

16 Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?? 2002 UK#32 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x49irm_do-you-realize-y-the-flaming-lips_music

This quite stunning, and very emotional track was written by Wayne Coyne after the death of his father, and "how precarious our whole existence is..."

15 Royksopp ft Robyn - The Girl And The Robot 2009 UK Flop (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9ec4v_royksopp-feat-robyn-the-girl-and-th_music

This brilliant demented, choral, electronic masterpiece is of course the greatest track ever to be entered in the Buzzjack Song Contest. It reached #2 in Norway; yet in the UK disgustingly failed because of Radio 1; Radio 2 & MTV snubbing the track on their playlists. (Somehow I cannot see the Kylie re-recording of the track suffer the same fate if it does end up making the cut for her next album). However, the track is up for the Best Dance/Electronica recording at the 2010 Grammy's.

14 Alicia Keys - Fallin' 2001 UK#3 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28owe_alicia-keys-fallin_music

Alicia's breakthrough Grammy winning smash hit and signature tune and her maiden stateside #1 hit and first UK Top 5 hit. This track was a Top 100 hit all around the globe during 2001.

13 Coldplay - The Scientist 2002 UK#10 (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xm2b_coldplay-the-scientist

The second single from Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was the last track written for Coldplay's best album to date after Chris Martin listened to George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity" and took inspiration to drastically improve on the dirginess of the that track. A great sad video too.

12 Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver 2005 UK#8 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1cnjo_natalie-imbruglia-shiver_music

The second Eg White song in my Decade end Top 20, this melancholic song may only have peaked at UK#8 but it was an airplay #1 hit for five weeks and was all over the radio in Europe and Australasia.

11 Annie - Chewing Gum 2004 UK#25 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x55db_annie-chewing-gum_music

This electropop song co-written by Richard X was clearly inspired by early 1980s Tom Tom Club records. The song is based on a metaphor likening men to chewing gum. It reached the top 10 in Annie's native Norway.

10 Aimee Mann - Wise Up 2000 UK Flop http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3ubcx_aimee-mann-wise-up-live_music

After 15 years as a critically acclaimed artist with minimal record sales Aimee finally broke back through to the mainstream with the Magnolia OST which featured the cast singing this song at a key point in the movie. Although a commercial failure in the UK this song peaked at #2 in Australia; went top 5 in New Zealand and was a major airplay hit in the USA following on from the previous single "Save Me".

9 Take That - Patience 2006 UK#1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbmqm4_take-that-patience_music

A candidate for the greatest comeback song ever .... This soaring inspiring BRIT & Ivor Novello Award winning song also reached #1 in Germany; Italy; Spain; Austria & Switzerland. The video appeared to show them attempting to climb their way out of the reservoir they were pushed into from the 1996 farewell single "How Deep Is Your Love".

8 Robyn ft Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat 2007 UK#1 (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3tnmj_robyn-with-every-heartbeat_music

This electropop ballad was only a #18 in Robyn's native Sweden; but it went Top 10 in Denmark; Belgium & Holland as well as going Top 20 in a lot of other European countries. But it was most successful in the UK where it reached the top of the charts.

7 Badly Drawn Boy - Disillusion 2000 UK#26 (Year End #1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B11msns6wPU

Damon Gough was reportedly inspired by the idea of Edwin Collins' Orange Juice rewriting Stevie Wonder's Superstition to come up with this forgotten gem of a folk rock tune. Taken from the excellent but ramshackle debut album The Hour Of Bewilderbeast. Great but odd Garth Jennings directed video too.

6 Melanie C - First Day Of My Life 2006 UK Flop http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpazk_melanie-c-first-day-of-my-life_music

This song written by Guy Chambers and Enrique Iglesias went on to become a monster hit in Europe selling in excess of 1.8 million copies including #1 in Germany, Spain & Switzerland; Top 3 in Austra; Czech Republic & Russia; and Top 40 in virtually every other European nation bar Britain & Ireland where we are too busy worshipping that over hyped talent free zone that is Cheryl Cole to regard a female singer from a girlgroup who is currently nominated for a WhatsOnStage.com (aka nicknamed "the luvvies") award for her rave reviews and performances in the musical Blood Brothers as talented. This track spent a Chasing Cars like 57 weeks in the Swiss charts and 87 weeks in the German charts.

5 Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head 2001 UK#1 (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ai40_kylie-minogue-cant-get-you-out-of-m_music

The best song Cathy Dennis has ever written. The best record Kylie has ever made and the biggest hit of her career, it reached number one in 40 countries and has sold over four million copies worldwide. The song became Minogue's first U.S. top-ten single in thirteen years and is recognised as Minogue's signature song. The highest placed UK#1 of the decade in my countdown.

4 Amy Winehouse - Rehab 2006 UK#7 (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9hvl2_amy-winehouse-rehab_music

Old school 1960s soul meets very modern 2000s tough, funny, matter of fact yet incredibly vulnerable lyrics ...... step back and watch the Grammys; BRITs; Ivor Novello awards, enormous record sales and notoriety flood in. Such a pity she has a death wish with regards to "her Blake".

3 Rufus Wainwright - I Don't Know What It Is 2004 UK#74 (Year End #1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGrJV2rgS3g

I can't for the life of me figure out why Rufus Wainwright is not a far bigger star this decade. Maybe he is just too talented, too funny, too charismatic in interviews and too gay (that he makes Russell T Davies seem like Danny Dyer) for his own good. This is his finest song that had the kitchen sink thrown at it. How can a track featuring Todd Rundgren; Joan Wasser; Teddy Thompson; Martha Wainwright & Joanna Newson not be?

Posted by: gooddelta 27th December 2009, 09:07 PM

First Day Of My Life is a gorgeous song, I have it on my iPod and recall hearing it a lot in 2006 despite it's lack of a proper UK release - not that it would have done anything here anyway

2 Goldfrapp - A&E 2008 UK#10 (Year End #1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VPyso87fZU

This folk-tronica song performed by the British duo was written and produced by Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory for the duo's fourth album Seventh Tree (2008). Its lyrics were inspired by Goldfrapp's visit to the emergency department of a hospital on a Saturday afternoon. The doctors "pumped her up with loads of painkillers" and she described the situation as a "bit surreal." According to Goldfrapp, the song is a metaphor for a horrible relationship. A huge return to the sound I most like them to make after their disappointing third album. I look forward to the rumoured 1980s Power Ballad sound of their 2010 5th album.

1 Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies) 2005 UK#19 (Year End #1) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5fcr0_arcade-fire-rebellion-lies_music

I love this song. The first time I heard this thanks to the recommendation of a certain Mr David Bowie I knew this sounded like everything I had heard before and yet nothing like what I had heard before. The track I have played the most this decade so it was an easy choice as Decade end #1; and it has not been destroyed by over airplay or being sung badly in Reality TV talent contests.

I hope you have enjoyed the countdown. The Decade end Recap will be posted in full tomorrow. :woot:

A fantastic top 2 there, especially 'Rebellion (Lies)', my number two. I have to say I thought I'd like more of the top 40 than I do though...
