Top 5 MotoGP 2023 Races

5. Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini 2023 (Misano)
Wildcard Dani Pedrosa almost finishes on podium!

Starting in the top 5 is one of the best Italian circuits that returned to MotoGP in 2007 as San Marino Grand Prix, when Casey Stoner got the historical win for himself and Ducati.

MotoGP 2023 runner-up Jorge Martín won the race, beating his closest rivals Marco Bezzecchi and Pecco Bagnaia and causing Martín to cut his championship gap to Bagnaia from -45 to -36. However, the standout of this weekend was the 2x World Champion Dani Pedrosa, who retired from MotoGP in 2018 and became the KTM test rider since. Pedrosa almost got a podium in both sprint race and Sunday race, where he lost to Bagnaia by only less than 0.75 seconds.

P.S.: MotoGP sucks at doing highlights, so I put the UK broadcasting one, which is clearly unavailable both here and in USA. Not sure with other European countries though.

4. Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland 2023 (Sachsenring)
Jorge Martín declares championship battle!

If we ever heard the name Sachsenring, we would already know that Marc Márquez would win it as he is nicknamed “The King of The Ring” after collecting 11 wins here. However, what if he was absent?

The answer laid in this year’s race, where reigning World Champion Pecco Bagnaia had an intense battle with the new kid on the championship block Jorge Martín. Pecco and Martín traded to each other as the race leader on the last 10 laps. Pecco almost crashed out of the race on the last two laps, where he hit Martín’s rear tyre. The race ended up with Martín winning by only 0.064 seconds ahead of Pecco. This marked Martín’s first win since the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix.

It was an unexpected year for Martín who suddenly challenged the World Champion, for he had never finished in the top five in the standings since entering MotoGP in 2021.

3. Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana 2023 (Ricardo Tormo)
#BACK2BACKgnaia breaks the 'Number One curse' in MotoGP!

Whenever a title is decided in the last round, the race becomes twice as interesting. 2006, 2017, and 2022 are the examples. Big oops to Valencia 2015, which was my number one Worst MotoGP Race of All Time.

2023 was no exception as well. It started with Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martín getting a dream start. The drama began on lap 2, where Martín made a carbon copy of Pecco’s mistake in Qatar. It got even worse for Martín as he collided with Marc Márquez on lap 5 and ended his world championship hope. The last couple of laps later got more intense as Johann Zarco and Fabio Di Giannantonio were giving Pecco some pressure. However, Pecco still secured his title as a race winner.

That meant Pecco had broken the ‘Number One curse’, explicitly proving the inexistence of the ‘curse’, where there were no MotoGP riders in the 4-stroke era that could defend their title when wearing a #1 plate. Those riders mentioned are: Nicky Hayden (2007), Casey Stoner (2008 & 2012), and Jorge Lorenzo (2011). The last time a premier-class champion defended the title using the number one was Mick Doohan (father of Alpine reserve driver Jack Doohan!) during the 2-stroke 500cc era in 1998.

Valencia 2023 would’ve surely become the best MotoGP race this year had Martín not crashed on Márquez, who was having his last race with Honda and had both Jack Miller and Brad Binder not made unforced errors to secure a 1-2 finish for the winless KTM and a ninth different winner.

2. Grand Prix of Qatar 2023 (Lusail)
Unemployed Di Giannantonio secures his first ever win despite the ‘Mapping 8’ drama!

Lusail has always been the opening race for MotoGP since 2007, so when they decided to schedule it for the second last race of 2023, I knew it would feel different from its usual vibe. It brought the vibe of F1 2021 and WorldSBK 2014.

The race started with Jorge Martín having, probably, his worst ever race start of the season despite starting from the 5th grid. Meanwhile, Pecco Bagnaia got the dream start and led most of the laps. It went even worse for Martín, for he struggled fighting with Marc Márquez, Fabio Quartararo, Enea Bastianini, Maverick Viñales, and Brad Binder. Martín’s teammate Johann Zarco even had to give up some of his positions to defend him as much as he could. Martín also for once had the slowest lap time in the final half of the race.

Pecco, the race leader, who would’ve been 25 points ahead of Martín had the race finished 5 laps earlier, got challenged by Fabio Di Giannantonio in the last 5 laps. That’s when most of us pre-2017 fans got outraged, for Gresini Racing sent to DiGi's dashboard “Mapping 8," an equivalent order to 2013 Red Bull’s “Multi 21” and the infamous “Valtteri, it’s James” in 2018. For whatever reason, DiGi disobeyed that order and kept launching attacks on Pecco until finally overtaking him on Lap 19. Pecco tried to retake the lead on Lap 20, but ended up going wide and almost taking down DiGi as well. The race ended with the unemployed DiGi getting his maiden win. At the post-race press conference, it was revealed that DiGi asked for a team order in the last 5 laps as he knew he had a pace and a chance to win. Gresini decided to use “Mapping 8” and “0000” as their signals, meaning that it had a different meaning from the one I saw in 2017!

With Di Giannantonio getting a seat at VR46 Ducati, I wish him the best for the next season, as he wants to prove to everyone that he can be as good as the highly-hyped Marc Márquez on a Ducati bike.

Johann Zarco finally got his first MotoGP win since his debut in 2017 and celebrated it with his iconic backflip we’ve waited for a very long time. Meanwhile Jorge Martín who led the first 26 laps with hard-soft tyres got overtaken by four riders who ran on hard-medium on the last lap. This also became the race where Fabio Di Giannantonio got his first ever MotoGP podium.

Aleix Espargaró, who was having a worse season than last year, claimed his second MotoGP win after having a thrilling battle with Pecco Bagnaia on the last lap. Starting from the 12th grid, Espargaró patiently overtook every rider ahead and finally caught up with Bagnaia during the last 5 laps. Aprilia almost had a podium lockout as well, where Miguel Oliveira and Maverick Viñales finished 4th and 5th, respectively. MotoGP decided to use their 2010 layout, which is the same as we see in F1. Maggots and Becketts becoming its winning overtakes made me believe this change was a good idea, but we would surely miss our usual layout where Woodcote became the winning overtake for Jorge Lorenzo (2013) and Álex Rins (2019).

Pecco Bagnaia did a sensational race in Spain this year. The race started with KTM duo Brad Binder and Jack Miller leading the race. Pecco first got some pressure from Pramac Racing duo Johann Zarco and Jorge Martín, but finally found his way to catch the KTM men. Despite having to fulfill a 1 position penalty due to an illegal overtake on Thriller Miller, Pecco was still able to catch up to the leading group until he finally overtook Binder on the last 4 laps. Binder attempted to pull a classic last-corner overtake on Bagnaia but failed to do so.

1. Grand Prix of the Americas 2023 (COTA)
Honda ends its winless streak, while Inline-4 veteran Álex Rins wins on a V4 bike!

I believe nobody watching MotoGP from Buzzjack expected that COTA would become my favorite 2023 MotoGP race. COTA was presumably one of F1’s best tracks. Despite not watching F1 too much, I still remember Sir Lewis Hamilton’s face being the sports section’s headline in one of my local newspapers after becoming the first US GP winner. I won’t forget Kimi Räikkönen’s first F1 victory in five years either. However, it is one of the most predictable races in MotoGP should the name Marc Márquez, The King of COTA, exist. With him being absent here this year, at least there’s no idea who would win.

The race started with Pecco Bagnaia and LCR Honda pioneer Álex Rins having a dream launch, leaving all the pack behind. Jack Miller was able to catch up with the leading group and also secured a new race lap record on Lap 6, but then crashed out on the next lap. Despite the high top speed from the Ducati, Pecco wasn’t able to get away from Rins, who were flying on the continuous chicane in Sectors 1 and 2. The pressure continued to strike Pecco until he made a blunder and crashed out on Lap 8, causing VR46 Racing Team’s Marco Bezzecchi to take the championship lead. Vale’s stepbrother, Luca Marini, attempted to chase Rins on the last couple of laps, but Rins still took the victory. Marini and 2021 World Champion Fabio Quartararo finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

There are some reasons why I considered COTA my favorite race of the year and why it will be memorable in the next five years, despite the lack of battles in the leading group:

1. From Lap 8–13, we witnessed a Honda 1st and Yamaha 2nd, something that classic fans wanted so much in this European manufacturers’ domination. Then, it also marked Honda’s first MotoGP win since Emilia Romagna GP 2021. It also became the first win for LCR Team since the 2018 Argentina GP and their 100th podium since being established in 1996. Rins’ sole victory also became an accomplishment that Marc Márquez didn’t have in 2023 as a Honda rider either.

2. Rins, who had been racing for Suzuki, which is an Inline-4 bike, already impressed us by winning a race on Honda, which is a V4 bike. It has never been easy for any former Inline-4 rider to do so, including Valentino Rossi (Yamaha, 2004–2010 vs. Ducati, 2011–12) and possibly Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha, 2019–2023 vs. Ducati, 2024–present).

I always believed that Honda’s fall was caused by their repair costs due to the number of crashes Marc has had since 2021. Because of that, I’m looking forward to seeing Honda in the next 2 years, with Johann Zarco and Luca Marini becoming the latest HRC additions, as well as the new MotoGP concession rules.

FAST X

Genre: Action, Racing

Let’s talk about films first, as I only watched two this year. First up, the 10th instalment of The Fast & The Furious Saga, namely FAST X. I’ve been following the saga since I discovered Fast Five on Star Movies (now FOX Movies). After failing to watch F9 in cinema due to the pandemic, I managed to find some free time to go to a cinema for this.

The film began with the iconic Vault Scene from Fast Five, but with the addition of the POV of Hernan Reyes’ son, Dante (Jason Momoa), who was seen chasing Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the family. After the death of his father, Dante sought revenge on Dom’s family.

A lot of past characters returned here apart from the family, such as Mia O’Conner (Jordana Brewster), Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), Jakob Toretto (John Cena), and Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood). Aside from Momoa, some new characters are also introduced: Brie Larson as Tess, Mr. Nobody’s daughter; Daniela Melchior as Isabel Neves, sister of Dom’s late girlfriend Elena; and Alan Ritchson as Aimes, the new leader of Nobody’s agency.

Fast X had a lot of positives, but they also had a lot of negative ones too. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be. It contained a pack of memorable actions: Rocket League football-inspired scenes in Rome, Antarctica actions, Rio de Janeiro race, etc. Universal Music also provided high-quality songs, and one of them became one of my number ones.

The negative things I got from Fast X might be the same as other people, which was the storyline that was already out of control. The plot was indeed 2-3/10, and as a side note, the actions and CGIs were 8-10/10. My biggest complaint here was the appearance of Dom’s sister Mia, which made the film not make any sense at all. I mean, how could the family let Brian O’Conner ‘take a rest’ and not disturb his retirement time following Paul Walker’s death, but not his wife? Putting Mia in action was definitely the major problem here.

In conclusion, I’ll be waiting for the sequel to this final chapter in 2025.

Sewu Dino

Genre: Horror, Folk

You might have never heard of this film, as it was only released in Indonesian cinemas. The Indonesian horror movie Sewu Dino, which translates to "1000 Days" in Javanese, took its title from an X thread. I was never a fan of any horror film, but when my friends invited me to watch this, I’d rather join them and touch some grass.

The film started with a lady named Sri Rahayu (Mikha Tambayong) who got a job as the housewife of a rich family, The Atmojo(s), with massive pay. However, she realized she had to be involved in a lot of mystical rituals. She made a contract with the Atmojo’s head, Mbah Karsa (Karina Suwandi), a middle-aged woman, to be loyal while working for her family. The story continued when Sri was assigned to do Basuh Sedo, a ritual of washing either a dead or dying person with its ‘holy water’, on a young lady named Della (Gisellma Firmansyah). She did the ritual alongside her fellow housewives, Erna (Givina Lukita Dewi) and Dini (Agla Artalidia).

To be honest, I expect nothing from any local horror films inspired by random X threads. A similar, but more popular, film called KKN di Desa Penari (EN: College Students' Community Service in Penari Village) ended up being a disappointment, despite its hype and high-selling records. I expect nothing either from Sewu Dino, for I never knew the existence of its X thread either. I’d say it’s disappointing as a common local horror film, while those who have read on X said that it's trash. The first local horror film I watched, Kuntilanak 2, was clear ahead of this.

If it isn’t exclusively released in Indonesia, you might be able to discover Sewu Dino on Amazon Prime.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Labyrinth Game Arc, Sasuke Retsuden Arc & Code's Assault Arc (Episode 274-293)

Genre: Slice of Life (tongue.gif), Action, Fantasy

So, we'll start with a non-seasonal anime that I've enjoyed since 2019, but looked like a secondhand embarrassment for most weebs...

Burrito. Yes, what else?

I've hidden my interest in this series on Buzzjack until this year's Halloween, when I decided to use Kawaki as my display name. I felt like I should stop hiding it since I’ve watched plenty of anime series this year. I mean, more than a dozen. I was just tired that people proudly bullied a fanbase—a Kawaki fan was also still bullied after he was announced dead in a traffic accident—animators, the illustrator, and the writer, but suddenly cried for help when their beloved anime got roasted back. Watching like 10 new anime series kinda helped me in not focusing too much on those toxic fanbases and gave me new insights into other series. In my defense, I’ve been a long-time Naruto fan too; I’ve watched it since 2010 on a local TV channel because it’s the most popular anime series in Indonesia ('cuz if not, there wouldn’t be any formal news shows announcing Kurama’s death). I’m just avoiding its fanbase because they were so toxic to other fanbases, including to its spin-off / successor’s anime.

Back to the topic, I've followed the anime every Sunday since June 2020, specifically during the Kara Actuation Arc. I dropped ALL anime in November last year until Demon Slayer came out because I had a mental problem after handling a college event while writing EOY 2022 at the same time. That’s why I missed some of the Boruto filler / anime canon episodes in late 2022.

We’ll start with the Labyrinth Game Arc. It’s an original arc made by the studio without any manga or light novel adaptation. The arc started with Boruto Uzumaki joining a mission with his mentor Sasuke Uchiha to investigate an endangered hawk’s habitat and ended with Boruto escaping a labyrinth. The hawk rescue mission itself was kinda forgettable to me. I couldn’t remember the names of the characters either. However, the episodes themselves were still decent, and I still enjoyed them pretty much. He took care of his hawk well. Sasuke, as always, showed his intelligence here, even without the Rinne-gone. Continuing to the main part—the labyrinth part—they're definitely more memorable here. Some people referred to the labyrinth game as Netflix’s Squid Game rip-off, while I thought it was more similar to Zero Escape. The standout of this arc was Ouga, previously known as Yatsume, who was, in anime, revealed as Amado Sanzu’s 8th project (Kawaki was 9th), meaning that she was also an Inner Kara member. The plot twist was totally unexpected, and I was totally blown away after learning it. However, unlike other Inners, Ouga didn’t have any combat skills. Her power was her mind, which was why the Labyrinth Game existed in the first game. Learning that what she did was wrong, she ended her game and ‘promised to Boruto that she’d meet him soon’. I hope that actually happened in the manga written by Masashi Kishimoto and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto, as I loved Ouga’s character pretty much.

Next, it’s the 5-episode Sasuke Retsuden Arc. Masashi Kishimoto himself illustrated the novel that Jun Esaka wrote and adapted. The arc got a manga adaptation several months after the airing of the anime episodes. This arc focused on Sasuke and his wife, Sakura Uchiha, who were searching for a cure for Naruto’s nine-tailed chakra. The setting took place in the Land of Redaku, approximately after Momoshiki’s Appearance Arc. Sasuke and Sakura encountered many things, such as an army of dinosaur-dragon-type beasts called Menou. The story ended with Sasuke and Sakura successfully discovering the cure. This arc, in my opinion, was a great adaptation. The anime really showed the romantic moments between Sasuke and Sakura, which we never got in the main story, which would only make sense because Sasuke was still defending the five major villages from the outside. The only problem I had was the high frequency of topics in the anime. I was quite confused understanding the scientific stuff there, which is weird because I had less of a problem with Boruto’s Scientific Ninja Tool stuff. I also forgot the names of Sasuke’s cellmates, but I did remember one of them being a relative of the Redaku leader.

Lastly, let’s talk about Code’s Assault Arc (or simply Code Arc). It’s adapted straight from the monthly manga series, in which the chapters were already released 1.5 years ago. It started with Code discovering fellow Inner Boro’s hideout with his claw marks (his special ability) and ended with Boruto being reborn after getting killed by Kawaki, with chapter 1 / episode 1's intro scene being replayed. I’m not really a huge fan of the early Code Arc. I swear I prefer watching the early Funato Arc, which was filler anime canon, to reading those early chapters. I do really like the writing of Eida’s / Ada’s characters here, but not really that much about her brother, Daemon. The anticipated Team 7 training duel was nicely done too, but I was still questioning the absence of Konohamaru next to Naruto in the anime. The Rasen-dan scene was dope; Loved Naruto’s transformation into Sage Mode too; and Boruto’s first death part is quite sad as well.

Boruto anime is currently on hiatus, so I hope they can return stronger and better. I don’t mind if they make the series seasonal, but anime originals are certainly needed too. Some good non-manga characters, like Houki Taketori, Ouga, Tsubaki Kurogane, etc., deserve to appear in the manga-adapted episodes as well.
Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing Naruto's anniversary episodes, which are, honestly, too late, unnecessary, Naruto-milking, and ruining Boruto's productions...

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc (Season 3)

Genre: Action, Fantasy

Next, we got an anime that, without any doubt, had top-tier animations, but not a few weebs judged it as an overrated series. I first discovered Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba back in 2020, during the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was interested in trying the anime because it was available for free on one of the streaming platforms our family subscribes to.

The third season of the series focused on the two main characters, Tanjiro Kamado and his devil-possessed sister Nezuko, visiting the Swordsmith Village, the hometown of his smith, Hotaru Haganezuka. The story ended with Muichirou Tokitou defeating Upper 5 Gyokko and Tanjiro slaying Upper 4 Hantengu, while Nezuko was finally able to survive in the sunrise. For the first time in three seasons, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira did not support Tanjiro’s role as main characters. Genya Shinazugawa took the place of this season’s main cast instead.

This season’s animations remained consistent with their predecessors. I liked the writing of most of the characters here. The mist pillar, Muichirou Tokitou, was flat and cold-blooded, mostly because of his past. Mitsuri Kanroji, the love pillar, was a huge fan-service and a lovely character. It was just an assumption: My interpretation of Mitsuri is that her pink and green-coloured hair romanticised her obesity. She loved eating too much, causing her hair to change colour, resulting in her being rejected a lot. Haganezuka also got a big spotlight here. This season might probably be the peak of his persistence. Lastly, I was impressed with the introduction of Genya's abilities because we haven't seen anything special from him in the first two seasons.

Overall, I can’t wait for 2024, when Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba adapts the Pillars’ Training Arc. Unlike Boruto, I didn’t read its manga, so I had zero clue. Some people said 2024 would be too fast for a new season. Hoping that the animation studio does not turn into a black company like the latest rumours suggest.

Chainsaw Man

Genre: Action, Fantasy

Anyone remember when Kenshi Yonezu made a brief appearance on Spotify UK 200 and iTunes UK charts last year with KICK BACK? Well, that song was the opening theme for this anime, Chainsaw Man. I decided to watch it last month as an addition to the MAPPA Studio productions I have watched, in order to reduce my bias toward Boruto.

The story is about Denji, a teenager who lost his normal life, and his chainsaw devil pet Pochita. He wished for nothing but a happy life. Denji had already been killed in the middle of Episode 1 by a bunch of devils, but got resurrected by Pochita and had a contract with him, leading him to become the Chainsaw Man. Denji’s transformation gained some attention from a devil hunter bureau led by Makima. She was the one who treated Denji like a human, making her Denji's first love. Makima recruited Denji to her team, Tokyo Special Division 4, where he met new partners like Aki Hayakawa, Power, Himeno, etc. The team was assigned to slay demons causing chaos in the city and collect some flesh of Gun Devil, a devil that has killed thousands of people around the world. Denji himself was quite a pervert for the first season as he had some of those light perverted moments with Power, Makima, and Himeno.

Despite the disappointment from early manga fans, I actually enjoyed the stories from Season 1 pretty much, so I’m looking forward to the 2nd season. However, I'm not 100% comfortable with the gore and adult moments. Naruto, back then, was considered 'comedy' when they pulled out Oiroke no Jutsu (Sexy Jutsu), so they didn't trigger me as much as Chainsaw Man. Since I’m starting to enjoy reading manga comics a lot, I’d probably use the 1-time read ticket on Mangaplus to catch up with the current story too, learning that I’ve seen too many spoilers. Chainsaw Man wasn’t one of the series I really cared about enough to be spoiler-free, though. The animations and CGIs were pretty good, something that I’d expect from a studio that brought a lot of new Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen fans.

Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta
The Girl I Liked Forgot Her Glasses

Genre: Romantic, Comedy

So, I discovered this anime from a gaming-storytelling TikTok account telling about his personal love story, but ended up saying ‘inspired by’ this anime. laugh.gif

The story was about two middle-school students, Kaede Komura and Ai Mie. Komura, who was a rigid, shy, and clumsy boy, fell in love with Mie, whom he considered one of the most beautiful and popular girls in the class. He also got a seat next to Mie for the whole semester. As Komura’s personality prevented him from expressing his feelings to Mie, she also had one bad habit: she always forgot her glasses. She had myopia, which made her have to wear thick glasses. This led Mie to keep asking for help from the closest person to her seat, which is none other than Komura. Komura’s act of service story then finally got started.

I had mixed feelings about the anime. The story had a quite slow pace; there were some plain scenes in some of its episodes. Some people on MyAnimeList said that Mie was stupid, for she kept forgetting about her glasses, which I wouldn’t object to. However, I still adored their moments throughout the anime, which were so cute and pretty memorable. I wouldn't be against two middle-school students having a relationship either. The animation was executed decently, though I wasn’t a huge fan of a 3-D rotation.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Your Lie In April

Genre: Romantic, Drama

After 8 years (6 years since I heard the title), I decided to watch what people considered one of the best anime series, possibly in the top 25. Before starting this anime, I already knew what would happen to the main character and how the story would end.

Your Lie in April is a story about a boy named Kousei Arima and a girl named Tsubaki Sawabe, who have been in an awkwardly in-love friendship since they were children. Kousei has been a great pianist since 5 due to his mother’s obsession with making Kousei perfect, while Tsubaki loved playing softball. Tsubaki then introduced Kousei to her friend, Kaori Miyazono, a fabulous violinist who wanted to be the girlfriend of a famous boy named Ryouta Watari.

Despite being Watari’s girlfriend, Kaori had deeper feelings toward Kousei because they both loved classical music. Most of the episodes showed Kaori spending beautiful moments with Kousei, despite being the girlfriend of another boy. Both Kaori and Kousei supported each other during their performances at classical music competitions after knowing each other, until Kaori got hospitalized for the entire winter and then died. That’s when we learned that a lot of lies happened last April. Kaori did not actually fall in love with Ryouta, but with Kousei. She has been idolizing Kousei since 5. Kaori then learned that she had suffered from an unknown serious illness since joining middle school. Knowing her time wasn’t much, she promised herself to try to break her limits, including being a close friend to Kousei. She lied to Tsubaki about Ryouta because everyone knew how special the Tsubaki-Kousei relationship was, except for both of them.

As most people said about the anime, it is great, especially if you’re into classical music. The anime became my TIL about Twinkle Twinkle Little Star being originally a Mozart composition. However, due to being 8 years late and too many spoilers and memes being posted, I failed to cry in the last episode. However, the anime still successfully made me think about Kaori’s final letter, specifically about the lying parts, for at least 4 days. The second ending theme is without a doubt an emotional song, even before I started watching the anime. Talking about the theme song, I also learned that the first opening theme, Goose House - Hikaru Nara was sent to BJSC Spin-off: Japan vs. South Korea as well.

Bocchi the Rock!

Genre: Comedy (and a little bit of Slice of Life)

I wasn’t sure what brought me to this anime. At first, I thought it was a recommendation from my friend, but it actually came from memes on X and YouTube. I think I was in search of another music-themed anime too.

It’s the story of a teenage girl named Hitori Gotou, who was extremely introverted and shy about interacting with other people, including her own family. She expressed her feelings by writing lyrics and playing guitar. She had an alter-ego channel named Guitarhero, where she published all of her plays. Despite all of that, she still wasn’t able to make new friends until she met Nijika Ijichi, who invited Gotou to join her band, Kessoku Band, as the guitarist. The band also consisted of vocalist Ikuyo Kita and bassist Ryou Yamada. In the band, Yamada gave Gotou the nickname Hitoribocchi (all-alone), shortened into Bocchi. Since they were still an underground band, they only performed in small places, and each member had to sell five tickets every time they wanted to perform. Gotou’s addition helped the band write new songs and gain more fans, so Ijichi encouraged her more and more by saying those three magic words: Bocchi the Rock!

I would definitely recommend this anime to people of Buzzjack. Not only does the anime contain packs of amazing rock songs, a good sense of humour, and interesting references, but it is also good for introverted people who often suffer from social anxiety. I’m not that far from Gotou’s personality. I’m still not confident enough to use my real name for publishing all of my EDM chart videos. I’m not a person who can respond quickly in both social media and real life either. It often took me 10–60 minutes to properly answer my WhatsApp personal chats. Although Bocchi the Rock! didn’t really help me heal my anxiety, I really love the story, and I appreciate Gotou so much. An anxiety-related anime might be suitable for me now, as I’m also reading Komi-san wa, Komyushou desu (Komi Can’t Communicate) manga I bought last Saturday.

(December 13th 2023)

Lastly, I really love Kessoku Band’s single from episode 5. Titled Guitar, Loneliness, and Blue Planet, this song would’ve easily become number one in one of the weeks had I discovered the anime during its release season.

Hataraku Maou-sama!! 2nd Season
The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2 (Sequel)

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy

Mmmm, let’s talk about an anime that needed 10 years to have a sequel. I was first introduced to Hataraku Maou-sama! in 2016 by one of my friends. I enjoyed Season 1 very much, so I got hyped when they announced a second season last year.

The story continued after Chiho Sasaki was given a fragment, namely Yesod, and the memory of Sadao Maou’s (The Devil King's) past life. Maou and Emi Yusa (Emilia Justina/Emilia The Hero) continued to take care of Alas Ramus, a baby-lookalike Demon Princess, while facing troubles from people of Heaven and Ente Isla who kept threatening the earth, which was a different dimension from their own world. The anime also introduced Alas Ramus’ younger sister, Acieth Alla, who was already a teenager, and Emi’s father from Ente Isla, Nord Justina, who were using different names on earth. They both met Maou at a license test. The second part reached its climax with Emi and Alas Ramus being imprisoned on Ente Isla, while Maou’s right-hand man, Shirou Ashiya (Alciel), and Nord were captured by Heaven. Maou and Acieth joined forces with the Church Army’s Suzuno Kamazuki (Crestia Bell), Emeralda, and Albertio to end the chaos on Ente Isla.

I understand the sequel got a lot of disappointments from early fans. I wouldn’t deny either that its debut season had better animations. I couldn’t judge its pace, unfortunately, because I didn’t read its light novels, which aren’t for sale yet here. The thing that gave me different opinions from people’s disappointment is the fact that Hataraku Maou-sama was my second anime franchise ever I watched—the first one was obviously Naruto (Part 1, Shippuden, and Boruto: Naruto The Movie). I always have a soft spot for this anime. Seeing it get a sequel actually made me overjoyed. I wouldn’t actually mind if the next season continues to look like this, as long as it isn’t announced in another 10 years.

Mashle
Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Genre: Action, Comedy, Fantasy

If you are looking for a One-Punch Man x Harry Potter rip-off, just watch this anime. Two of my friends recommended Mashle to me in April, but I didn't find out about its availability on Vidio (the streaming service to which we subscribed) until September.

The anime took place in a Harry Potter-esque world where all people in the land could use magic (marked by the stripe they had on their faces) except one boy named Mash, a kid who was thrown away by his parents as a baby because he had no stripe marks. Regro Burndead, a middle-aged man who wasn’t good at magic either, found the baby and isolated themselves in a forest, where he named the baby Mash Burndead. As an insurance to Mash’s safety, Regro asked Mash to train his physical strength more, which led him to become the Saitama rip-off, calling it 'magic'. Mash’s story then continued with his entering Easton Academy. The academy will introduce you to some new main characters, such as Lemon Irvine, Lance Crown, Dot Barrett, and Finn Ames, who will become Mash’s friends.

This anime is...HUGE. I was dying of laughter when watching the first 7 or 8 episodes, while the last 4 episodes gave me more intense scenes. The way he used his physical strength and the way all the characters in the anime reacted—I'm literally dead. The maze scene, the quidditch game, the cream puff—damn! I’m looking forward to its second season this January. As a non-Manga reader, I’m curious if they’re doing more comedy than action again.

Overtake!

Genre: Drama

Fall 2023 brought me to two different racing-related anime. The second one was Overtake!, an original anime that wasn’t adapted from any sources. I got interested when its trailer appeared on my YouTube home page as I was planning to watch other racing anime. Overtake! introduced the scenery of the F4 Japanese Championship—where Yuki Tsunoda won it in 2018—in the manner of an anime.

The story is about two main characters with two different backgrounds: Haruka Asahina, an upcoming F4 driver who was racing for a poor, independent team Komaki Motors; and Kouya Madoka, a freelance photographer who stopped photographing people due to his past. Asahina, who was pretty talented, was often unlucky during the races with his handicapped team. Komaki Motors, which had zero sponsors, suddenly had a path to get more money for their upgrade resources as Madoka offered himself to become their personal photographer.

Overtake! delivered well for me, as I had never watched an original anime before. I loved the way they drew the main characters’ personalities. Their backstories were reasonable and were told clearly. It was indeed not a 100% racing anime, as it got the POV of photography too. However, wasn’t a photographer part of F1? One thing that slightly failed me was the predictable ending as we know Asahina didn't win any race in the first 11 episodes. I would definitely like to get a second season, but of course with better pacing.

MF Ghost

Genre: Drama, Sports

Meanwhile, the other racing anime was this spin-off/sequel of the legendary Initial D. MF Ghost was written and illustrated by the same mangaka as Initial D Shuichi Shigeno. While I haven’t watched the original series before as it contained a lot of Stages (seasons), I believe it was fine watching this first before tasting the true classic of a drifting anime.

Japanese-born Cambridge student Kanata Rivington moved to Japan after studying with legendary driver Takumi Fujiwara, the main character of the original show. While taking a part-time job as a waiter, Rivington participated in Japan’s most famous racing series MFG under his father’s surname, ‘Katagiri’. He lived with Ren Saionji's family, whose parents were old friends of Rivington's. Saionji’s father introduced Rivington to Ogata, a mechanic and former MFG racer who lent Rivington his red Toyota GT-86. MFG wasn’t really a drifting championship, as some rally-oriented drivers like Michael Beckenbauer, Fuujin Ishigami, and Shun Aiba also participated. Despite driving in Ogata's low-horse-powered car, Rivington was ready to show his drifting skills in the tournament.

Since I haven’t watched anything from Initial D except some clips I discovered on YouTube, MF Ghost is a decent homage to the original series, in my opinion. Its opening theme also featured a eurobeat song with a legendary eurobeat artist, MOTSU, who performed some of Initial D’s theme under the band M.O.V.E. It also introduced me to some great eurobeat classics—I’m putting the playlist below—by Go2, MEGA NRG MAN, and Annerley (known better for her UK #2 hit 2 Times as Ann Lee). With the series announcing a second season in 2024, I’m looking forward to seeing Rivington drive the upgraded GT-86 and hearing more underrated Eurobeat songs.

Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai.
The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons

Genre: Slice of Life

Fall 2023 really brought me to more and more anime besides racing. I personally would not expect at all to click on an anime with four brothers on its cover.

The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons is an anime about four brothers named Hayato, Mikoto, Minato, and Gakuto Yuzuki who just lost their parents a couple months ago. Since their parents’ deaths, Hayato has had to work harder as a teacher to feed their younger brothers. He worked at the same school where Mikoto and Minato, the second and third brothers who had only a one-year-old gap, studied. At first, Mikoto wasn’t grateful to have Minato, who was pampered more by the mother, but later he had 'brother complex' (brocon) feelings for Minato’s spoiled brat personality (uhm, Boruto, uhm), causing Minato to get a little bit annoyed. Meanwhile, Gakuto wasn’t your ordinary 7-year-old elementary kid, as he got wise and smart at an early age thanks to an old man Torajirou from the Kirishima family living across the Yuzuki residence. Similar to Mikoto, Minato had a brocon relationship with Gakuto for being too cute.

I really love how realistic this anime was. You don’t even have to force something here to make your audience cry. I cried twice in two different episodes. On the other hand, this anime taught me about determination, love, fortitude, and friendship. It also gave me an insight that a good anime doesn’t have to contain fanservice nor couple ship like in those popular and highly-rated Shounen/Seinen series, though I actually wanted to see Minato having a bigger relationship with the tomboy Uta Kirishima instead of being just best friends.

Sousou no Frieren
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Part 1)

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

A lot of people got hyped for this new anime, so it’s natural for me to join the hype. As a non-Manga reader, I clearly had zero idea what Sousou no Frieren was about. The interesting fact is that the Indonesian editor for the manga reached Volume 5 before this even got aired. The anime now has the highest rating (9.14) on MyAnimeList, though it’s still #565 in the popularity chart.

The story began with how a common fantasy anime would likely end. The elf Frieren defeated the Demon King alongside her party: the hero Himmel, the priest Heiter, and the Viking Eisen. People around the world nicknamed them The Hero Party. 50 years later, Himmel passed away, and Heiter followed him several years later. Frieren, who is an elf, stayed young as she had a different timeline from humans. Similar to elves, Eisen lived longer as well, although Vikings lived shorter than elves. 26 years following Himmel’s death, Frieren wanted to go on a journey to remember her past adventures with The Hero Party. She was accompanied by the mage Fern, who was adopted by the late Heiter, and the warrior Stark, a student of Eisen.

I might have a similar opinion as most Indonesian anime fans: the early storyline is indeed boring. However, at the same time, it is flawless. Sousou no Frieren had a lot of wholesome moments despite using a mixed plot, something I wasn’t really into. I didn’t expect Himmel to be that special to Frieren, so no wonder she cried during his funeral. Stark’s relationship with Fern was cute AF. The moment they were dancing at the ball, my heart immediately screamed. I am glad I joined the bandwagon, and I can’t wait to see what Madhouse will deliver in the second part.

Made In Abyss
Made In Abyss (Season 1)

Made In Abyss: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei
Made In Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul

Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou
Made in Abyss Season 2: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi

An interesting award-winning anime was discovered by the mainstreams in late November, ‘thanks’ to some toxic K-Pop fans, where they called out Soobin (of TXT), Woozi (of SEVENTEEN), Taeyong (of NCT 127), and Sakura (of LE SSERAFIM) for watching Made in Abyss. However, their attempt to cancel these idols failed successfully, all thanks to weebs who defended them on X. Two weeks later, Indonesian branch of Muse Communication, Muse Indonesia, uploaded both the first and second seasons of the anime. It made me interested in finding out how controversial this franchise was. Unfortunately, Movie 3 was nowhere to be found on the legal site, at least on my radar, so I shamefully took the piracy path to watch it.

Season 1 introduced the series to Riko, a young girl who is the daughter of the missing White Whistle, Lyza. Riko escaped the orphanage with an artifactual robot that she named Reg to discover the mystery of The Abyss, which contained seven layers. They encountered Ozen, another White Whistle who was Lyza’s teacher, on their way to The Deepest Part. In episode 10, we finally met, possibly the fan favorite character of the anime, Nanachi. Nanachi was introduced by saving Riko’s life after getting poisoned by one of the creatures in Layer 4.

Nanachi joined Riko and Reg’s adventure in Movie 3, which is the direct sequel to the series. They all headed to Ido Front on Layer 5, where Bondrewd, one of the White Whistles, lived. Their arrival was greeted by Prushka, Bondrewd’s adoptive daughter. Learning that the 6th Layer can only be opened by real white-whistle owners, the adventurers stayed for a night in Ido Front, but then revealed that Bondrewd and his Umbra Hands attempted to dismantle Reg’s robotic body. The story ended with Reg, both consciously and under someone’s possession, taking down Bondrewd’s ambitions for the trio. Prushka, who later died because of the experiment, transformed into a Life Stone to become Riko’s White Whistle, so that her dream of having an adventure with the trio still came true.

The latest release of the franchise was The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. Team Riko finally arrived at Layer 6. There, they discovered the Village of Iruburu, where a lot of narehate (survivors of the 6th layer curse) lived. Iruburu was made by an adventure team called Ganja. Wazukyan led Ganja alongside his other two sages, Belaf and Vueko. They were accompanied by a stranger named Irumyuui who brought their way to the 6th Layer. Knowing that there is no way home anymore upon arriving in that layer, these adventurers got cursed after drinking narehate water, which they thought was normal sea water. Irumyuui was their solution after holding the Wish-granting Egg. Irumyuui’s new form made the adventurers transform into narehate, finally building the village. Irumyuui’s final child, named Faputa, however, had a desire to destroy the Village of Iruburu and wanted to eat all of the adventurers who took advantage of her mother.

Made In Abyss, in my opinion, is fantastic. The mangaka Akihito Tsukushi-sensei really wanted me to think harder and imagine the mysteries happening in The Abyss. While most people praised Nanachi for ‘carrying’ the series, I seriously disagree with their opinion, as Reg and Riko did their part very well. Reg’s fight with Bondrewd is surely on the same level as some of the top-tier action anime battles. Though most of the supposed-to-be-sad moments didn’t make my tears come out, the scene where we learned Prushka died hurt my heart pretty much. The moment she appeared in the movie, I already adored her so much for her attitude. I understand that this series was made as a part of Tsukushi-sensei's hobby, so I will patiently wait until he illustrates new chapters wholeheartedly.

Finally, regarding the K-Pop fans (MOA, FEARNOT, CARAT, and NCTzen): Is Made In Abyss controversial? Sure, it is. With those treatments and blood spreading to underage children, it’s surely disturbing for some people. Not to mention the naked scenes, apart from the contexts. Did the K-Pop fans do the right thing? Is Tsukushi-sensei a pedophile, as the K-Pop fans said? I’ll let other people judge.

Kanojo mo Kanojo
Girlfriend, Girlfriend (Season 1 & 2)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

My anime exploration continues with watching two new RomCom series in Fall 2023. Second season of Kanojo mo Kanojo was out last season, but I started watching it from Season 1 as I have not watched it yet.

The first season was about a high school boy named Naoya Mukai and his girlfriend Saki “Sakisaki” Saki, whom Mukai had been confessing to every month since elementary school. During the extracurricular time, another girl named Nagisa Minase appeared and confessed to Mukai on the school roof. Rejected by Mukai, Minase promised that she would be waiting for him until he broke up with Sakisaki. Mukai couldn't face her cuteness and promise, so he asked Sakisaki to two-time him, and she eventually accepted it. The triangle relationship between Mukai, Sakisaki, and Minase didn’t get approval from Sakisaki’s best friend Shino Kiryuu and their fellow high school student Rika “Mirika” Hoshizaki.

Second season focused on Kiryuu, who wanted to keep her eyes on the three, and Mirika, who kept trying to flirt with Mukai. It also revealed Kiryuu had had a serious feeling toward Mukai since he refused to give up on Sakisaki. Her feelings deepened when Mukai bought her a purple ribbon as a gift for giving him advice. While Mukai was focusing on getting close with both Minase and Sakisaki and finding their best moment to kiss, Kiryuu, out of nowhere, often got into accidents with Mukai at the most unfortunate moments. Kiryuu couldn't hold out much longer with her feelings, so she agreed to work together with Mirika to create a gap between Mukai and his girlfriends.

As a new RomCom watcher, I’d say this series is absurdly hilarious. I’d definitely lie if I said I didn’t laugh. The problem with me is Minase, which is quite problematic and manipulative, I must say. I personally don’t like her at all, which kinda ruined the anime. Mirika wasn’t quite unlikable either in the first season, but she didn’t really damage it. Yes, it’s hilarious, but I think that’s that. However, the second season got a slight improvement, which is all thanks to Shino Kiryuu. Her chemistry with Mirika is better than I expected. I totally like her tsundere personality, holding her feelings from Mukai while ‘helping’ Sakisaki get closer to Mukai than Minase. Shino, you da real MVP.

Kimi no Koto ga Dai Dai Dai Dai Daisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy

cheeseblock.png

This might be the most absurd anime title I have ever seen. A lot of aniYTs and aniXs recommended this series, so I had zero reason why I had to skip it. Hyakkano, the short name of the title, was also a romcom anime like Girlfriends, Girlfriends, except the potential girlfriends were 100 instead of just four. What made Hyakkano more interesting is that Aka Akasaka, author of Oshi no Ko and Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, is a fan of the manga.

The story began with a boy named Rentarou Aijou, who had just graduated from middle school. By that time, he had been rejected 100 times since he was only 8 months old. He went to a shrine to pray to God. As the anime title said, God destined Aijou to have 100 girlfriends from the day he entered high school, signalled by a heartbeat shock if a pair of couples stared at each other. Well, it was true. On the first day of school, Aijou met two girls named Hakari Hanazono and Karane Inda and received that ‘shock’ signal after they stared at each other. The same thing happened several days later in the library when Aijou acquired that signal again after staring into the eyes of Shizuka Yoshimoto, the school librarian. Some days later, he got two 'shocks' from the smartest girl in the class, Nano Eiai, and a drug maker, Kusuri Yakuzen, respectively. For Aijou, he had to treat those girlfriends wholeheartedly; otherwise, they would die. Luckily, no girls minded Aijou’s wish to partner them all. At the end of the season, Aijou faced the final boss: Hakari’s mom, Hahari Hanazono. Hanazono’s mother knew her daughter had a boyfriend with five girlfriends, so she did not agree and asked her daughter to break up with him. How did this season end? Correct! Hahari became the sixth girlfriend. Despite already seeing Rentarou’s face for several minutes, Rentarou was still ‘blind’ at that time due to Yakuzen’s infrared eye drop, so he couldn’t see Hahari’s face and was yet to fulfil the requirement of getting a shock. Bon appétit! Here is my delicious Oyakodon!

See?! He had 6 GFs so far!

As I mentioned before in the Anime discussion forum, this is a peak romcom anime. I don’t know what to say anymore. Hyakkano truly led me to the vicious circle of romance-comedy series. I don’t know about the others, but it is really enjoyable to watch, and its humour is really great. The anime also contained a lot of "breaking the fourth wall" moments, similar to Gintama (which I haven't watched before) and that legendary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIyYTN86_Uk (I remember watching it on HBO back then). However, it would be a total lie if there were no actual wholesome moments in the anime. Aijou’s focus episodes on Yoshimoto were totally adorable. Yoshimoto was a likeable person, and her backstory was kinda sad. His focus episodes on Eiai were no exception. My heart went sensitive for a moment when Aijou wanted to burn his polaroids containing his moments with Eiai, but I was glad Eiai prevented it. I can’t wait for the second season, for it might cover one of the most-awaited manga panel scenes.

Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

Genre: Action, Comedy, Horror, Supernatural, Suspense

Here’s a series that got delayed until the end of 2023. Zom 100 is the first anime animated by the new studio BUG FILMS, established by former members of OLM (animation studio for Pokemon, Inazuma Eleven, and Beyblade).

Main character Akira Tendou worked for a black company after graduating from college for three years and got depressed. However, his mental health was saved…by a zombie apocalypse. When everybody panicked, he felt happiness because he had no longer dealt with his despicable boss. He later joined a team with his college pal Kenichirou Ryuuzaki and a mysterious girl named Shizuka Mikazuki, who had dreamed of being a doctor in her early days. The team was completed by a German foreigner, Beatrix Amerhauser, who was a Japan fanatic.

Overall, I didn’t dislike this at all. The animation is pretty unique, and I thought it was another MAPPA-animated thing. However, the delay announcement for the last three episodes really hit hard. The first nine episodes that aired in Summer 2023 (Asia) were standardly nice, but the last three ones released in Fall 2023 were kind of flawed and rushed, I guess. Of course, people on X would quickly reply, “And then you gave Boruto 9/10." I mean, for a seasonal blockbuster, it’s normal for me to expect more, isn’t it? Not to mention the black company scene in the first episode would’ve been a mock from BUG FILMS staff to OLM had they not announced the delay. Well, then. I hope the second season goes better for both the anime and BUG FILMS.

Spy x Family Season 2

Genre: Action, Comedy

Weeb’s favorite series for cosplaying finally got its second season, just one year after the first one ended. I held on to watching Spy x Family after just the first 8 episodes, but Boruto’s hiatus made me continue the franchise.

After finally making contact with Donovan Desmond, President of the Nation Unity Party, the Forger Family: Loid "Twilight," the agent, Yor, the assassin, and Anya, the ESPer, continued living a life as a fake family. Their next journey is going on a cruise for a holiday. Anya won two tickets for her and her fake father from a lottery, while Yor had an escort mission on the same cruise Anya and Twilight were taking.

Personally, it’s another popular series that I didn’t dislike at all, but I still wanted to know why people rated it that high. Did Anya win adults’ hearts again for her cuteness? Anyway, it’s a good season, I guess, mostly thanks to the Cruise Arc. Finally, we got to see Yor carry this season with her assassin skills. Her determination to protect her clients was wholesome, too.

Oshi no Ko

Genre: Drama, Supernatural

Seeing how big the promotion was for the series, I decided to watch what people would say: The Biggest Anime in 2023: Oshi no Ko. Its pictures were spread literally throughout Japan. Its opening theme was one of the most-streamed songs around the world this year. The time of Oshi no Ko being released couldn’t be more perfect, as the number of populations experiencing parasocial relationships has been increasing since the pandemic.

The anime began with a 90-minute first episode focusing on the supposed main protagonist, Ai Hoshino, former centre of the idol group B-Komachi, who suddenly announced hiatus, and it was then revealed that she was pregnant. She gave birth to twins and gave them the names Aqua and Ruby Hoshino. Both twins were reincarnations after their first deaths: Aqua was a reincarnation of Gorou, Ai’s doctor, who died after being pushed to the edge of a cliff; Ruby was a reincarnation of one of Gorou’s patients, Sarina, a 13-year-old teenager who didn’t have much time to live anymore. Several years later, Ai was stabbed to death by one of her early fans after learning that his oshi was pregnant. 15 years later, the twins grew up becoming talented people. Aqua was a great actor, while Ruby carried out her mother’s legacy as a promising idol. People in the industry later recognized Aqua after taking a minor role in a drama called Sweet Today, where he met his fellow child actor, Kana Arima. Aqua was then featured in a reality show called Imagachi (LoveForReal), where he met Akane Kurokawa and MEM-Cho.

In conclusion, I think it is a must-watch anime for Buzzjack members, which I see as people who admire music and musicians’ personalities. Most characters were quite well-written as well. I could enjoy the fun of it while absorbing the feelings of the characters. I bought its manga last weekend, from the 5th–8th volume, so I can’t wait for the 2nd season next year. Apart from its ending, I’m pretty glad I didn’t get spoiled too much about the series.

P.S. Now I've used all of my 1-time reading tickets in MANGA Plus by Shueisha app to catch up the manga story and GOD, I'M TOTALLY HYPED FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES!!!

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 1 Part 1 & 2 and Season 2 Part 1)

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Ecchi

Last, but not least, might be the best anime I’ve discovered in 2023. So, I discovered this anime through an Indonesian meme back in late 2022. I wasn’t convinced yet to watch it, but with Boruto announcing hiatus and Demon Slayer having its third season, I had to find something to at least keep my mood stable, which led me to Mushoku Tensei.

An unnamed middle-aged NEET man passed away in a truck accident. He then got isekai’d (reborn in a different world) on an 8000-BC sword and magic world by Paul and Zenith as Rudeus Greyrat. He grew up as a genius magician at an early age but was also perverted, as in his previous life. He already had his first crush in the first episode, which was his own teacher, Roxy Migurdia. His second and third lovers were also introduced in the first part: Sylphiette, an elf, and Eris Boreas Greyrat, his royal cousin. The first season also introduced you to two Turning Points. Similar to the dictionary, according to light novel readers, Turning Points would be the parts that have the biggest and most decisive changes in the storyline. These Turning Points would give you goosebumps as well, like the anime did to me.

Without spoiling the series too much, Season 2 focused on Rudeus’ depression problem, which is why the arc was called “Depressed Magician Arc." It introduced you to some new characters, but the most important one was Sara. When Sara was supposed to become Rudeus’ fourth lover, he then realised he had had an ED—yes, erectile dysfunction—since the end of season 1. The story then continued to the next arc, which was the Ronoa Academy Arc. Rudeus decided to join the academy in order to find a cure for his illness. He also finally met Sylphy again in the academy, where she was joining forces with Princess Ariel and Luke Greyrat, which were introduced in Episode 0. However, Rudeus didn’t know it was Sylphy, for she was disguising herself as a boy named Fitz.

This, without a doubt, would be an anime I’d like to revisit again in the future. Mushoku Tensei encouraged me to watch more anime series that are either seasonal, romance, or Isekai. As you might remember too, I even sent one of its soundtracks to BJSC because of how much I love the lyrics and the song itself, so I want you to listen to this once more before we reveal where LONGMAN - spiral will finish in 2023. Of course, this had a lot of controversial moments, which I’d rather you search for yourself. I’m personally excited for the second part of season 2 in early 2024, but I also wanted to finish the entire story earlier by buying its light novels, which aren’t available yet in Bahasa Indonesia.

There you have it, all anime I watched last year that I wanted to spotlight!

Unfortunately, we could not start the countdown yet as I haven't made the Top 75 for Week 52 and 53 (yes, this year I'll feature the 53rd week, which was supposed to be made for 2022).

I'll publish the written version of my Spotify Wrapped and Top 100 Dance/Electronic Songs which I have uploaded on YouTube ICYMI.

Time was a pretty decent BJSC entry from you - it certainly grew on me as the contest went on. I think the only song in your Top 40 I charted was Hurricane - fairly standard fare from Garrix but nothing wrong with that!

Glad you liked Hurricane though, while I believed it sounded really dated for Buzzjack. happy.gif

Starting the countdown ASAP. We'll start from some interesting songs missing the Top 200.

I'm also focusing on mine first, at least until March. Then, I'll start checking other EOYs as well. biggrin.gif

Headhunterz, Vertile ft. Sian Evans - Lost Without You

Date entered: 26/08/2023
Chart run: 65-65-61-49-44-41-39-45-xx [8 weeks]

Commentary

Kosheen's Sian Evans reunited with Headhunterz for the most-hyped hardstyle song of 2023. It was already her fourth collaboration with the man who won Hardstyle Song of the Year in 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Headhunterz did a similar formula that Armin van Buuren did in Tune of the Year 2021: Headhunterz x Vertile won Song of the Year 2022, while Aly & Fila won Tune of the Year 2020. As results, Q-dance's Defqon.1 2023 Closing Theme was made. Honestly, this combination was a little bit overrated and I think DJ Aversion, who finished second, deserved the title. Nonetheless, it should be an amazing Christmas present for Heady as he announced hiatus on touring—similar to Hardwell in 2018—and I'm looking forward to his future releases while just sitting in either his studio or his home.

Commentary

Buzzjack's favourite artist Anne-Marie also missed this year's Top 200 despite having a hit that Buzzjack actually liked. It was her title track UNHEALTHY that made her returning to my Top 40, and it was a collaboration with the legendary Shania Twain!

Commentary

Italian dancehall reggae band BoomDaBash became one of my discoveries in 2023, thanks to their single Heaven which was a rework of Eiffel 65's non-UK European hit in 1999, Too Much Of Heaven. The sudden appearance of Eiffel 65 was also influenced by the success of Guetta's controversial I'm Good (Blue). Unlike I'm Good (Blue), this failed even to reach top 200, but what I can tell you is they are not really that far.

Commentary

One of the biggest UK hit last year and also (actually) Buzzjack's fave by RAYE and 070 Shake is sadly missing this year's EOY. Escapism. also becomes RAYE and 070 Shake's only US hit per today. It also marked RAYE's first proper hit after leaving Polydor Records, where she got many dance hits by collaborating with DJs like Jax Jones, Joel Corry, and David Guetta.

In the other hand, 070 Shake will actually be featured in the Top 200!

Recap Commentary

We'll kick-off the countdown with our latest 10 entries!

Ummet Ozcan, who acquired his maiden #1 two years ago returned to the EOY with his experimental ethnic music combined with melodic house & techno. He appeared at UK iTunes on a different song from Kayra, which was technically a good one as well. His BJSC entry sent by Beaverdonia managed to peak higher, but it failed to appear here. Nomansland (David's Song) was a 1999 rework of The Kelly Family's Who'll Come With Me in 1979 by DJ Sakin's project DJ Sakin & Friends and peaked at #14. A 2023 edit by German trance DJ Talla 2XLC is quite good enough to appear on my chart, as I was a huge fan of the melody.

Next in line is a Greenfroze entry by WagakkiBand, titled Sasameyuki. It was a Japanese ethnic-rock song which could be a good anime theme (they actually had some though, but I've yet interested in checking them). Although LOVE THE WAY is only charting for 4 weeks, Sickmode, Rooler, and DBSTF are still appearing in the EOY due to its high points. It's the only THE GANG's (Sickmode x Rooler) only hit here, though I quite enjoy most of their releases and live performances.

Mr. Most Favorite Hardstyle Track of All-Time JDX also returned to the Top 200 with Master of Your Soul, although it wasn't on the same level as his all-time classic and the two collabs. Russian producer Eximinds also returned to Top 200 thanks to his recent collaboration with the Finnish singer/songwriter Lyd14, titled On Our Side. Lyd14 is surprisingly getting a Top 10 hit this year, so she'll return with a potential Top 100 or Top 40 at the end of this year.

Norwegian DJ Tungevaag returned with more hits after parting ways with his notable partner duo Raaban. This time, it's a big room house collaboration with German producer STVW and London vocalist Joe Jury titled Lovers On The Run, which is a part of his latest EP Tungeworld. Another German producer, this time TheFatRat, went viral on TikTok with his 2014 song Xenogenesis for being The Outro Song. He decided to remake it with some new vocals by American producer NEFFEX (formerly duo), resulting in Back One Day, which fit the 'Outro' theme.

After the success of Whole Again on the mainstage EDM scenes, Steve Aoki (ew) released a follow-up song with Swedish musicians KAAZE and John Martin, titled Won't Forget This Time. It wasn't as iconic as Whole Again, but at least it's still pretty good and contains not just an animated video. Ukrainian producer Omnia also returned to the chart with his Aura, after previously got his first hit with a remix of a BT song. I'm still mad that his remix of the Armin x Alesso song with Heyem & Groozin was still not released.

Recap Commentary

The first two songs might end higher in the EOY chart next year. We got a surprisingly good trap EDM song by producers BEATSMASH from Italy, Slanks from Greece, and rapper/songwriter Drama B from New York. Showtek bless us hardstyle fans by announcing a hardstyle album (possibly called 360 Blue). Their comeback single Dear Hardstyle with the Alabama-based RnB musician Earl St. Clair already gets enough points to appear at Top 200, despite only spending 4 weeks in 2023.

One new hardstyle act appears, another one returns. Dutch producer Aftershock finally gets his first top 40 with Stars of Destiny, alongside Canadian singer Alexa Ray III, while NY-based composer Sogma claims his first top 40 since 2021 and he will appear again later. Dutch trance producer Doppenberg also has his first top 40 this year with Someday. He made a brief appearance in 2022 at bottom 70-75 before finally getting a top 40.

Robbie Williams' dance project Lufthaus makes an entrance here with Immortal, which is a collaboration with Buzzjack's current classic sensation Sophie Ellis-Bextor. While Robbie also got a short Top 40 appearance on my personal charts this year with a Take That classic, Sophie still isn't appearing despite how big MOTD is at the moment. Japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK return to the EOY this year with Your Tears Are Mine, which was #37 in 2022. They almost got a new top 40 entry last year, but failed shortly.

Another returning song comes up next, which is from Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and YOASOBI's Lilas Ikuta, titled Free Free Free. While YOASOBI are still pretty successful on my personal charts, Lilas' solo project still remains a one-hit wonder. More surprise entry comes up next. A random soundtrack game from the latest Sonic Frontier game by SEGA appears in both my personal Top 200 EDM and Weekly Top 40 charts. It was a dubstep song composed by Kanon Oguni.

Eastovka's hiatus entry Yank by Indonesian Malay-pop band Wali gets a Top 200 entrance as well. Its iconic guitar verse, which has been watched at least 10M times on YouTube, became the reason why they sent it. Hardstyle Showtek returns again here. This time, it is a collaboration with every EDM's favorite DJ Timmy Trumpet, hailing from down under. The hardstyle version, however, wasn't the original one, but the Festival Mix, which got me disappointed a little bit.

Recap Commentary

My most listened artist of 2023 Phuture Noize finally gets himself revealed. It is titled Thru The Smoke, a collaboration with Dutch pop singer Daimy Lotus, who has worked with him numerous time as an uncredited vocalist. He has 4 songs to go. Andrew Rayel has one song out of his 3 releases in 2023, titled One More Memory. It is his only trance song that was charting, as the other two were more of big room house (progressive).

Egyptian trance duo Aly & Fila also return to the top 200 with their anticipated Ultra ID, Edge of Tomorrow with London-based producer Chapter 47 and Halifax singer Richard Bedford. Dutch euphoric hardstyle producer Frontliner gets two hits last year. The first one is Before Your Eyes, a release from his raw hardstyle project Alter Ego and also a collaboration with fellow Dutch producer MYST.

Dutch hardstyle label End Of Line Recordings released their third mega collaboration with their men: Warface, D-Sturb, E-Force, Artifact, Bloodlust, and Killshot. Titled Making History, they dedicated the song to their former member Delete, an Australian hardstyle producer who was found dead two years ago in his home at the age of 30. In front of them is a long-returning trance project Cape Town, formed by trance DJs Ferry Tayle and Airwave, titled Tears of Jupiter. Airwave still has one song ahead.

South Korean producer Peggy Gou goes hype with her TikTok hit (It Goes Like) Nanana. Though it seems to be her only popular track, she actually had several Asian hits too, such as Nabi and Starry Night. Nanana, however, did not really get much love from my subscribers, as one submitted the song on my "WORST / MOST DISAPPOINTING EDM SONGS" GForm I spread last December. Future bounce music also returns to my chart last year with a STMPD RCRDS release Spellbound by Hungarian producer Dirty Palm, popular for his works at NoCopyrightSounds, and Spanish duo Bad Reputation, known for their bootleg of Alan Walker's SE Asia-only hit Not You.

P!nk's title track of her latest album TRUSTFALL successfully brought her to the Top 40, though it's the only hit she had in my chart last year. Dutch veteran hard dance duo Endymion reworked Never Take Me Alive, a 2017 song by Nashville record producer trio I WAS THE LION, popular for teaming up with For KING & COUNTRY in a record album of the 2016 film called Priceless (Pete might somehow know it because I don't).

Recap Commentary

The next song in front of you is probably my biggest guilty pleasure, surpassing the Max Verstappen chant (and PewDiePie’s T-Series diss tracks, had I joined Buzzjack earlier). Arhbo is a song by Ozuna, DR Congo singer GIMS, and Moroccan-Swedish record producer RedOne. There’s no denying that this has become one of my favorite World Cup theme songs despite the controversies happening in Qatar. I wouldn’t deny either that the last World Cup contained so many great matches! Ahead of Ozuna is the first Reality Club song that appears in my EOY chart, titled Am I Bothering You? It got a huge boost following my attendance in watching them in my city last September.

Next, we have the Dutch hardstyle producer Ecstatic and Sogma who released Dark Before The Dawn with The Voice UK season 7 semi-finalist Lloren (Lauren Bannon), probably known better for her BJSC DNQ entry "More". Then, we get the Oshi no Ko workout anthem by Pieyon, voiced by Taishi Murata. It debuted at number one because I wanted to play it 13x times, the time it got released. cheeseblock.png

Then, we have Ukrainian trance producer Main Engine who collaborated with Italian dance vocalist Annerley, better-known as Ann Lee for her #2 hit 2 Times, titled The Power Within. One of Dutch’s biggest dance songs, Transmission Remix by Dutch producers Eelke Kleijn and Joris Voorn, also features in this year’s EOY. It’s a melodic house song with catchy and memorable melodies.

J-rock band AliA released Aikotoba last winter for the (sadly) 6.8-rated anime Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and the Inexperienced Me. Made as its ending theme, it is one of the best anime ending themes I’ve ever listened to. This could’ve easily been my potential BJSC entry had my first three ones not gotten snubbed that hard. rolleyes.gif Swedish producer Nause (formerly trio) released a solid big room house (progressive) tune with fellow Swedish producer Steerner. Both songs might return in the 2024 EOY as they still have good chart runs.

Dutch frenchcore producer D’ort surprised me with his release I discovered last July, titled The Universe. He brought the similar vibe as Sefa, which makes sense why I enjoyed this easily. D’ort still has one song in the EOY countdown. Linkin Park celebrated their 20th anniversary of Meteora by releasing a lot of unreleased materials. They actually sounded more proper than the Hybrid Theory one. The first one is Healing Foot, which still managed to peak at the top 10 despite how strong last year was. It is confirmed that they have two more songs in the countdown.

I believe Pink still isn't in her decline era, at least in the UK. She will probably get another hits in the future as long as she keeps doing this 2-single-only -> album formula.
Peggy, in the other hand, has always been big in Asia, so knowing her getting a worldwide hit didn't surprise me much, nothing but full support.

Recap Commentary

Three Indonesian producers are up next. Trance producer Attila Syah teamed up with former Weird Genius member Billy Taner for the ATSY x Taner project. They collaborated with lesser-known fellow Indonesian producer Burnhaze and Malaysian vocalist Amin Salmee for a Revealed Radar release, titled River. Belgium-based Dutch DnB producer Avizura is up next with his comeback release What Lies Ahead, as a part of Liquicity’s Galaxy of Dreams 4 compilation album.

Russian trance producers Roman Messer and NoMosk get their first ever song entering my personal chart, thanks to the 2023 Full Fire Mix of their collaboration with Christina Novelli, Lost Soul. Baltimore producers duo Frogmonster, who got a surprise number one in 2021 following their Asian viral TikTok hit Remember Our Summer (charting with the Ummet Ozcan and Karra collaboration as Remember The Summer), returned to the Top 40 with another solid big room house release Wonder.

Russian producer Vigel and Dutch duo Voster & Gallardo also made their return to top 40 with Meant To Be. It also marks Orlando duo Hit Or Miss’ first top 40 as well. YOASOBI’s Head In The Clouds Jakarta performance in December 2022 impacted their chart performances a little bit, though I didn’t attend there as it was too expensive for me. laugh.gif First song appearing here is Tabun, which also went viral for a moment in the Asian TikTok radar.

Three upcoming songs shared the same points, but had different peak positions. The lowest one was French producer Mathieu Koss who collaborated with Norwegian musical duo Madcon, popular for their cover of Beggin’ and non-UK-Top-40 European hit Don’t Worry (with Ray Dalton). Same as the title, Queen for a Day (Yeke Yeke) sampled a minor Top 40 hit Yé ké yé ké by Guinean recording artist Mory Kanté (apparently was also sent by Singerpurear at BJSC). London DJ Dimension also gets a hit this year, although it wasn’t from his recent Top 40 one. Where Do We Go is a solid DnB tune with Portsmouth/London singer Poppy Baskcomb. Then, we get another YOASOBI (yay!). Their opening theme for the original anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (though I don’t watch the anime), Shukufuku, marked their fourth songs to reach the top 20. They still have one more song to go and you should already know what it is.

Ending the 200-151 list, we have more Dutch hardstyle producers appearing here. A-RIZE signed a contract with hardstyle label Scantraxx and unleashed his first release, which was a collaboration with Demi Kanon. So Alive became Kanon’s first chart entry in my personal chart. The song also finished 8th in my Top EDM Songs of 2023. With the song only getting released in November last year, I expect to see this again next year with a higher peak.

Recap Commentary

If You Know That I’m Lonely by Brighton indie band FUR, which was apparently Suedeonia’s entry as well five years ago, became a viral thing in Indonesian TikTok, causing the song to debut on my charts. Las Vegas producer Tensteps gets his first top 40 as the primary artist with his track New Day with Australian producer Achilles, taken from Tensteps’ debut album Infinite. Amin Salmee also returns to the top 200 after previously being featured on the ATSY x Taner song.

Dutch producer Frontliner releases a new euphoric hardstyle song titled Dreams and Wonder, stating that he will revive the classic sound of euphoric kicks. Ahead of him is Dutch producer Sefa’s first of his 4 appearances in the top 200. It was the Defqon.1 2022 Edit of his 2017 frenchcore song Be Free.

Russian producer Aspyer gets a new chart entry with Last Call, a collaboration with Icelandic-English singer Fredrik Ferrier. It still uses the same formula which is Aspyer’s talent in playing violin, except this song contains vocals. Dutch producer duo Lucas & Steve also returns to the chart with Lions Roar, collaborating with Philip Strand. This is the only L&S song in the countdown, but Strand still has one song to go.

Producer The WLT and vocalist OANA, hailing from Romania, get their first ever chart entry with an uplifting trance song called Rainbow. It was released at Andrew Rayel’s imprint Find Your Harmony. Skrillex also makes his way to the Top 200, thanks to his track XENA with Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, taken from one of his 2 albums last year Quest For Fire. Now, I would be lying if I said there was no political thing here. The fact that the song re-enters and gets a new peak during the horrendous Gaza attacks speaks to it all.

Despite my disliking towards Maddix and his mainstage techno thing (with Hardwell), his 2 releases are the next ones in line. First one is a collaboration with the Indian-blood American producer KSHMR, titled Close To You. It is a mix between Maddix’s mainstage techno sound and KSHMR’s typical ethnic sounds. The other one was a collaboration with Hardwell and Timmy Trumpet, titled Revolution. I still consider the song uplifting trance more than just mainstage techno. Hardwell has one more song on the countdown later on.

Yeah, unfortunately Peggy made a brief chart appearance and had a high peak as a sign of appreciation more than a personal favorite itself.
