What Will the Neighbours Say? is being re-released on March 8th! How do you think this will fare in the UK chart?
Once again, this reissue will be available with three physical formats: 3CD, Blue Vinyl and Picture Disc Vinyl. Incentives to pre-order from their official store: an exclusive sheet of stickers, and a competition - a chance to win Girls Aloud concert tickets.
Will Girls Aloud being together again be beneficial for WWTNS? This time there's three unreleased tracks included, which could give it an edge over SOTU. WWTNS was more successful at the time, and it seems to be the more popular album with the fanbase.
SOTU re-release charted at #42 with 2,925 sales in the 23rd June 2023 chart (exactly 100 sales behind #40).
WWTNS will chart on 15th March 2024; note that in the equivalent chart last year, the #31 from that week sold 2,833. Almost 100 copies less than what Girls Aloud sold to miss the Top 40 three months later. If March 2024 is at a similar sales level to 2023, could WWTNS make the Top 30 by selling a similar number of copies to SOTU?
I'm going to say... #24, with around 3,400! I'd love it to do better than that of course. I think it has a good chance of selling a few hundred more than Sound of the Underground, and that the time of year will benefit them to place higher in the chart.
I think it will flop , £17 £or 3 new songs isn't worth it at all.
I would hazard a guess it'll probably do a bit better; it was the album after all that really cemented their popularity, more so than the first album. Plus there's more incentive this time I feel with the new unreleased songs. I'll settle on top 30 I think (just to be on the safe side, and quietly hope I'm pleasantly surprised).
Id like to be proven wrong and it be higher but I think im gonna go with somewhere around the 21 - 30 mark.
There’s not too much to go off really other than how Sound of The Underground did but this was a bigger album the first time around and since that release we’ve also had the tour confirmed so I do think it will fare slightly more and perhaps they may even plug it a bit more too given how close Sound of The Underground’s release was to sneaking back in the top 40. I think Team Girls Aloud may try and ensure that this goes there.
I'm going to say between 25- 20, I'm confident that with more exposure and hype this will sell enough to sell a fair bit more than the debut did
I'm hoping top 30 will be it's lowest position.
I'm predicting Top 30 too for the same reasons - better received album, new songs, news of the tour increasing interest in the group again.
#32!
I think top 30, bordering on top 20 but not quite making it in. I expect it'll do a bit better than SOTU with the tour hype putting them into the spotlight again, and it's a more well-received album within the fanbase too.
#45 no cheap option CD will hurt it.
Not personally considering it to be worth the money is fine, of course!
In regards to reissues and what they tend to contain, I really do think that this track listing is great, and superior to many others that I've seen. There's 14 tracks included that haven't appeared on any previous Girls Aloud commercial releases:
Baby When You Go
Deadlines & Diets (Version 2)
Disco Bunny
I'll Stand By You (Electronic Mix)
I'll Stand By You (Tony Lamezma's Club Romp / Radio Edit)
I'll Stand By You (TV Edit)
I'm Every Woman
Love Machine (CD:UK Edit)
Love Machine (Gravitas Disco Mix / Radio Edit)
Love Machine (Tony Lamezma's Club Mix / Radio Edit)
The Show (Popworld Edit)
Wake Me Up (Flip & Fill Remix)
Wake Me Up (Tony Lamezma's "Love Affair" / Radio Edit)
Wicked Game
(I know remixes aren't for everyone, but I appreciate that Universal has made an effort to include some "new" ones when they could have just settled with only including the previously released mixes).
As for unreleased songs, I can't help but think of Spice Girls and how the Spiceworld reissue didn't include any unheard songs. So by comparison I'm really over the moon that Girls Aloud have included three!
I don't think there's pressure for the reissues to set the chart alight. If Universal was chasing a Top 10 placement, then I think there would have needed to be a few more CD and vinyl variants, plus some cassettes. Seeing as they're not going overboard with physical formats (just three) I guess their chart expectations can't be too lofty.
I'm assuming that the label must have been pleased enough with how the Sound of the Underground reissue performed, to justify the reissues project continuing - thankfully!
Also it's inevitable that the album will have a "1 week and out" chart run, but that's extremely common these days.
Honestly, I think expecting a re-release of a 20-year-old Girls Aloud album to go top 10 and hang around would've been an expectation so far beyond realistic even before the current norm of 1-week and out
There isnt a hope of it sticking around, even brand new albums struggles with that these days let alone a re release.
Any final predictions? I really do hope that it improves on the performance of Sound of the Underground! It deserves to!
I'm still fairly confident with my Top 30 prediction!
I predict number 19.
I looked at recent sales threads to see how much WWTNS would need to sell to reach certain areas of the chart. Only gone as high as #10 - highly unlikely, but it’s just to show much is actually needed for Top 10.
Reminder: Sound of the Underground sold 2,925 to be #42 last June.

Still keeping everything crossed for a Top 30 outcome! I really feel like WWTNS deserves better sales than what SOTU achieved. Remembering that SOTU was released a few months before they reunited. I want the label to be encouraged!
It should easily have higher opening sales than SOTU and I think maybe 4k sales which should easily get it top 40 but if sales are lower it could be enough for top 30 just about.
It's unlikely to pick up mothers day sales over the weekend and only hard-core fans buying as these releases rarely get casual sales.
#1
I fully expect a Monday midweek Top 10 for the album tomorrow.
Ooh it's against Ariana?? She'll be takin up all the pop streams. #2 or 3
The release schedule isn't thaaat busy this week so I am really hoping it starts out in the Top 10 of the midweeks!
Ariana Grande - Eternal Sunshine
Bananarama - Glorious: The Ultimate Collection
Bleachers – Bleachers
Dion – Girl Friends
Girls Aloud - What Will The Neighbours Say? (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Grace Petrie - Build Something Better
Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
Kim Gordon - The Collective
Kylie Minogue - Body Language [Vinyl]
Livingston - A Hometown Odyssey [DOWNLOAD ONLY]
Loreena McKennitt - The Road Back Home
Norah Jones – Visions
Ricki-Lee - On My Own [DOWNLOAD ONLY]
Sarah Jane Morris - The Sisterhood
Tom McRae - Étrange Hiver
Sound of the Underground was #9 in its Monday midweek with 2,562 sales. Not sure what is usually required to be Top 10 in the Monday midweeks recently.
If WWTNS isn't Top 5 in today's midweeks I doubt we'll find out how many sales it starts out with unfortunately.
It's number 10 today.
Arianahas hoovered up all the pop listeners. Otherwise, #1
Arianas sales are a bit underwhelming at number 1 with just over 18k which probably means Girls Aloud are on about 3k max.
Top 10 is a nice start but as it's on the bottom end of the top 10 it may not perform any better than the Sound of the Underground release.
