wub.gif Thank you for the update!

The Sound of Girls Aloud and Tangled Up were robbed of some weeks in the Top 40 because of the annoying Budget price rule in place at the time! cry.gif TSOGA would most likely have managed 28 weeks instead of 20, tut!

First week sales for the two "other" Girls Aloud albums:

6,147 - Mixed Up
9,637 - Girls A Live

Kind of interesting that Mixed Up sold more copies in total, even though Girls A Live had a significantly better first week! Maybe less copies of Girls A Live were made unsure.gif

tearsmile.gif at both of them selling more copies than Kimberley and Nadine's solo albums. A shame that Nadine's is the only Girls Aloud related studio album to miss the Top 20, but being independent and having Tesco exclusivity didn't help matters. I suppose in some respects it was impressive she even sold 5,000 albums in week 1! Not to mention that a November release was certainly brave.

Posted by: Liam.k. 3rd May 2020, 09:43 PM

Nadine to be the next #justicefor! If only to push her album ahead of Kimberley's.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 3rd May 2020, 09:45 PM

! Here for this to happen laugh.gif

Posted by: Andrew. 3rd May 2020, 09:52 PM

Tbh Nadine should be coming for Kimberley anyway with how the albums chart works noiew (as the queen would say), I doubt the GP are queuing round the block to stream Kimberley's covers album or Nadine's either though :'(

Does the budget chart rule apply now or was it like a 00s thing?

Did the budget chart sales count to overall totals they just weren’t chart eligible kinda like say if you’re #26 on the chart technically but it’s your fourth most popular track so you can’t chart but the sales are added to overall totals.

If we really get a reunion for the 20th anniversary Ten should get to platinum from the back of that and potentially get some more weeks top 40 too. They really did have great album sales despite their chart runs particularly for their first three studio albums looking similar to how 00s singles used to perform. Tangled Up and Out Of Control managed better longevity particularly within the top 40! But it’s also amazing to see how strong their opening sales were for their albums!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 4th May 2020, 12:21 AM

Also well done and thanks Joseph for all these sales details!

I’m loving looking at it all again amazing work heart.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. 4th May 2020, 12:38 PM

Not sure if the budget chart still exists but it's kinda redundant now that most albums chart due to streaming (I remember the budget chart only took into account physical sales, so an album could still chart if sold enough downloads - think it might have happened with their 2006 GH actually). I think all sales were included when it came to total sales but Jay should be able to provide more info than I can.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 4th May 2020, 02:00 PM

Thankfully all its sales still counted towards its total! wub.gif

This portion of the GH's run:

RE (08/02/2009) | 187-x
RE (22/02/2009) | 175-x

... was on the strength of download sales only! While the CD was at #1 in the Budget chart.

The Budget Album chart still exists - the last one I saw was the 10th April chart (Bill Withers - Greatest Hits was at #1).

Ten is at #199 on the iTunes albums chart in UK.

I think it’ll see quite a boost with recent news sad.gif

Some very old figures for the albums - probably not too interesting for most of you!

30th December 2007:

786,738 - The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits
584,489 - What Will the Neighbours Say?
370,638 - Chemistry
354,475 - Sound of the Underground
244,510 - Tangled Up

Someone on Popjustice shared that Ten has sold 282,000 (170,000 physicals, 83,000 streaming, 29,000 downloads).

Great to see it closing in on 300k, which is how much it needs to sell to certify Platinum!

Our last figure for it was 236,000 in August 2019. That’s a 46,000 sales increase in 90 weeks - about 511 sales a week. If it continues at that rate, 300k+ could happen in about 36 weeks from now (January 2022!).

511 sales a week... roughly speaking, that’s about 60% of the sales usually required to make the Top 200. So they’d have to double their streaming audience to safely get that album back into the charts.

I’m keen for it to go Platinum because it would mean all their studio albums and Greatest Hits would be Platinum or Multi-Platinum!

Posted by: spiceboy 8th July 2021, 10:52 AM

Fingers crossed it goes platinum asap! Will we get an alert when it does, they get automatic certifications now don't they? Wish Forever would stream as well as Ten it would be past platinum by now if so!

Girls Aloud's second greatest hits collection TEN from 2012 returns to the Official Albums Chart at Number 61, the album's first Top 100 appearance since March 2013. Ten's chart sales increased 320% week-on-week.

This should be very close to platinum now, right?

So its total sales as of yesterday are 282,110. thinking.gif So the Popjustice poster who stated 282,000 back in April was mistaken (you can see the post https://forum.popjustice.com/threads/girls-aloud-rest-in-peace-sarah-nicole-harding-1981-2021.6172/page-3654#post-8073582 ). I'm assuming it was a typo, as I go on to explain lower down this post. Anyway that's a bit disappointing, because like Chemistry, I was hopeful it would be getting closer to Platinum.

It sold 1,586 last week, re-entering at #61 in the official albums chart. That's made up of 1,240 streaming, 271 downloads and 75 CDs.

Ten's appearances in other charts:

#13 - Downloads (re-entry - 8th week in the Top 100, its peak is #11)
#59 - Sales (new entry)
#72 - Streaming (new entry)

Back to the sales... working backwards: its total on 3rd September was 280,524. As already mentioned, its sales increased by 320% compared to the previous week. That means that it sold 378 sales a week earlier, which was a full week under normal circumstances. Its total on 27th August was 280,146.

Regarding the seemingly duff info of 282,000 from back in April (it would have been a total for 23rd April) - let's just assume it sold 378 copies a week since then (obviously it wouldn't have done, it'll vary!)... it would mean that its total back on 23rd April would have been 273,342. This does make me wonder if that poster actually meant to write 272,000 back then, rather than 282,000?

In 2019 we had two totals:

226,528 - 15th March 2019
236,052 - 2nd August 2019

^ Which works out as a stronger average weekly sale of 476.2 per week.

If we just accept that it had sold ~272,000 on 23rd April 2021, then the average weekly sales between 2nd August 2019 and 23rd April 2021 = 399.4, which isn't far off the 378 figure from last week.

If Ten settles back to managing around 378 units a week... then it is on course to reach Platinum in August 2022. It could achieve that certification earlier, if its streaming sales remains stronger than usual over the next few weeks.

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th September 2021, 03:38 PM

1,233,745 was our last total for it in August 2019, it's now on 1,259,383! Amazingly there's still some CDs out there (it sold 33), obviously 0 downloads, and interestingly got 820 streaming sales. Not sure how that works out when most songs are on Ten and I doubt Life Got Cold, Long Hot Summer, See the Day and I Think We're Alone Now are THAT popular somehow! laugh.gif

Wow, that's very interesting. Certainly wasn't expecting that, without the album being on iTunes and also not on streaming services.

Posted by: -Jay- 11th September 2021, 10:29 PM

Also really surprised by that, I mean I didn’t even think to look for that album when I looked at the Top 200! 🤭😅 It’s very nice to have an updated total for that too, though I have absolutely no idea what OCC’s methodology is when it comes to coming up with a streaming figure for both Ten and TSOGA. Particularly as TSOGA is digitally unavailable (actually shocked that there were that many CDs of it left to buy that aren’t second hand ohmy.gif )

This could explain why Ten’s average weekly varies quite a lot over time and also why it’s taking quite a while to make its way to Platinum thinking.gif

Great to get sales updates on both, ten getting closer and closer to platinum.

Posted by: -Jay- 12th September 2021, 02:23 AM

The Sound of Girls Aloud's 853 sales this week was a 274% increase on the previous week - which means it sold 228 copies the week before! ohmy.gif That's roughly 60% of what Ten's 378 sales from that week. This week, The Sound of Girls Aloud sold 53% of what Ten managed.

I really wish we could know how OCC's database applies Girls Aloud's streaming to these two albums. It's great that TOSGA gets to keep increasing its already impressive figure, but I wonder if it's effectively "stealing" some streaming sales away from Ten?

TSOGA sales totals from the past 3 weeks:

27/08/21 - 1,258,302
03/09/21 - 1,258,530
10/09/21 - 1,259,383

Between 2nd August 2019 (when its total was 1,233,745) and 27th August 2021, it sold 227.3 a week on average, remarkably close to its weekly sales figure of 228 from the week before this one. If it continues to sell around 228 every week from now on, it would be on course to reach a sales total of over 1.3m by February 2025.

As far as I'm aware, The Sound of Girls Aloud is the best selling girl group greatest hits album in UK chart history, and is the 5th best selling girl group album of the past 25 years (behind Spice, Spiceworld, All Saints and PCD).

Its a great pity that TSOGAs continued sales growth is spoiled by its unavailability and another greatest hits being out thus pretty much replacing it.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th September 2021, 06:23 PM

It's likely at some point a different version of a greatest hits will be made available as at that point Ten will be platinum

And so much of the good material that was part of TSOGA's package is no longer available and as a result disappeared into the ether. cry.gif

1,233,745 was our last total for it in August 2019, it's now on 1,259,383! Amazingly there's still some CDs out there (it sold 33), obviously 0 downloads, and interestingly got 820 streaming sales. Not sure how that works out when most songs are on Ten and I doubt Life Got Cold, Long Hot Summer, See the Day and I Think We're Alone Now are THAT popular somehow! laugh.gif

It must be a glitch. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a song can contribute to only one compilation's streaming totals, so how come both TSOGA & Ten benefit greatly from streaming if their tracklists are practically the same? thinking.gif

Posted by: -Jay- 20th September 2021, 11:09 PM

Ten managed another week in the Top 200, at #198. 813 sales, lifting its total to 282,923.

You are wrong, if a track is on multiple albums it counts towards all it's on unless it's one of the top 2 streamed on the album or not within the top 12.

EDIT: Oh wait you said "compilation's"... I'm actually not sure on that one.

Completely forgot to reply to this but I’m so pleased that Ten finally went Platinum wub.gif It’s a major achievement that all 5 studio albums & 2 compilations went Platinum or multi Platinum.

Posted by: spiceboy 21st May 2022, 11:12 AM

Amazing to see TEN is platinum, really felt this album deserved so much more back in the day of it's original release, think it was just too close to their last GH with not enough material in between for the general public. That combined with the "underperformance" of Cheryl's third album and them leaving it so long only to come back with a 'farewell' GH cash in just did not work at the time.

Still bitter that Wake me up is not on it though dry.gif

A little over 20 years since it debuted and peaked at No.2 on sales of 37,077 copies, Girls Aloud’s first album, The Sound Of The Underground, has been released in a much-expanded deluxe edition. Re-entering at No.42 (2,925 sales), it raises its lifetime consumption to 380,885 units. Their fifth and final album, 2008 release Out Of Control, is their top studio album with sales of 805,065 while their 2006 compilation The Sound Of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits is their biggest seller overall, with to-date consumption of 1,283,157 units.

1,283,157 - The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits
805,065 - Out of Control
380,885 - Sound of the Underground

10th September 2021 total for TSOGA was 1,259,383. Despite this album not being available to download or stream, OCC evidently apportions some sales towards it every week. It's grown by 23,774 sales in 93 weeks, which is an average of 255.6 sales a week.

Out of Control was on 800,890 sales on 2nd August 2019. An increase of 4,175 sales in 203 weeks, that's just 20.5 sales a week.

In last Friday's chart before the re-release sales started to be included, Sound of the Underground was on 377,960 sales. An older total of 372,193 was shared on 2nd August 2019. 372,193 to 377,960 is an increase of 5,767 in 202 weeks, that's 28.5 sales a week on average.

Posted by: Liam.k. 23rd June 2023, 07:27 PM

I had hoped we would get an updated total for 'SOTU' but didn't think we'd get another two totals! ohmy.gif Interesting that 'SOTU' is averaging more than 'Out of Control' on a weekly basis, given those weekly units will mostly comprise of streaming and - without actually checking - I would have thought 'SOTU' would be the least streamed Girls Aloud album.

Posted by: -Jay- 26th November 2023, 10:48 AM

OCC shared 3 updated sales figures the other day ( https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/girls-aloud-albums-biggest/ )

1,290,000 - The Sound of Girls Aloud
805,500 - Out of Control
614,400 - What Will the Neighbours Say?

I wish they'd been more generous and given a full update. sleep.gif

Anyway, the previously known sales for those albums were:

1,283,157 - The Sound of Girls Aloud (23rd June 2023)
805,065 - Out of Control (23rd June 2023)
605,120 - What Will the Neighbours Say? (2nd August 2019)

Increases:

The Sound of Girls Aloud [increase of 6,843 in 21 weeks // average sales per week: 326]
Out of Control [increase of 435 in 21 weeks // average sales per week: 21]
What Will the Neighbours Say? [increase of 9,280 in 224 weeks // average sales per week: 41]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other old album sales:
Tangled Up - total of 509,634 on 2nd August 2019. If it sold at the same rate as Out of Control it would be over 514,000 by now, or approaching 519,000 if it sold at the same rate as What Will the Neighbours Say? - I assume its total would land somewhere in between.
Chemistry - total of 394,868 on 2nd August 2019. Again using OOC and WWTNS as benchmarks, by now its total could be 399,000 to 404,000. It would be very nice if it has gone over 400,000!
Sound of the Underground - total of 380,885 on 23rd June 2023. Presumably it's sold over 381,000 by now.
Ten - it exceeded 300,000 on 13th May 2022. If it was to sell 500 copies a week (this is a completely random figure), then it would be 340,000 now, but I don't know what it likely sells a week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I estimate that Girls Aloud have sold over 4,380,000 albums in the UK (including Mixed Up, Girls A Live and The Collection).

According to a post from Haven forum, Girls Aloud are the 153rd best selling album act of all time in the UK! https://fatherandy2.proboards.com/thread/104319/all-time-top-albums-artists

It shouldn't be too long until they reach 4.4m, which will of course be largely driven by their compilation albums.

The Sound of Girls Aloud rather high there for how much it’s pulled lately! (I can’t see it anywhere on streaming sites but is this paid sales driving it or streaming from their catalogue counting to that rather than Ten).

I’m guessing the record label hasn’t selected either The Sound of Girls Aloud or Ten to receive their catalogue streams so they just alternate between the two. I can’t imagine the streams of the songs that appear on The Sound of but not Ten gain enough streams to make up 300 chart sales per week.

I was checking out the best selling albums list for 2010 and was pleasantly surprised to see Messy Little Raindrops all the way at number 21 with over 421,000 copies sold. Considering it was certified platinum in August 2011 I had assumed it must've sold around 200,000 copies in 2010, so now I am wondering two things: a) why did it not get certified when it passed the 300,000 sales threshold (were the certifications not automatic back then?) and b) why did its sales fall off so quickly after 2010, considering it's only at 491,000 sales as of now despite having had such a strong first 3 months (and it's not even like it had a frontloaded run carried just by a big first week). Can someone help?

Posted by: Liam.k. 30th December 2023, 09:21 PM

Certifications only became automatic from July 2013 and its sales were boosted from the Q4 Christmas market. No more singles were released after The Flood underperformed so there was nothing to keep the album in the charts.

As good as 400k in 2010 seems now, I imagine the record company might have expected a bit more given this was the follow up to very successful first album and Cheryl’s profile was bigger than ever.

Posted by: Jord 2nd January 2024, 11:30 PM

Messy Little Raindrops screams rush recorded when you look back now. I don’t blame them as Cheryl’s profile was huge then and X Factor was at its peak but it’s definitely her weakest solo album for me. In a way I kinda wish they just re released 3 words as a deluxe and tagged an extra 4-5 songs on there but fair play the album did well I do wish they extended it with another single though but that’s also the case for her A Million Lights album too.

It's now 618,569, having sold 2,925 in the last week! So its previous total on 8th March was 615,644.

614,400 was a figure given in an article published on Thursday 23rd November, which I'll presume means the total is from Friday 17th November. A 16 week gap between then and 8th March, in which time it sold 1,244 copies. That's an average of around 77 or 78 copies a week (which is higher than I would have imagined!). That translates to the album selling a little over 4,000 copies in the space of a year.

Yes, the lack of gains for Love Machine shocked me too. I would've assumed it to be in competition with Sound of The Underground as their most streamed track after the tour, but it remained largely stagnant.

I was able to get data for Can't Speak French too: it did 3,531 streams on 10 May and 19,306 streams on 26 May. That represents a 446.76% increase in streams, meaning CSF's 10 May total made up 18.29% of its 26 May total.

Another great increase! I wonder how much the streams will skyrocket when it's time for the London shows cheeseblock.png

When you take into consideration the additional streams that the songs will be gaining from the recently released Megamix them certifications will hopefully be coming even sooner

Posted by: -Jay- 16th June 2024, 08:32 PM

Regarding Sound of the Underground, here are total sales I found for it from over the years:

Totals:
30th November 2003 - 143,000 (this being the day before the reissue came out - 143k achieved in 27 weeks)
7th December 2003 - 169,000 (after the first week of the reissue's availability)
28th December 2003 - 245,000 (102k sales achieved for the reissue in 4 weeks)
30th December 2007 - 354,475
21st June 2009 - 366,514
21st March 2013 - 368,000
2nd August 2019 - 372,193
16th June 2023 - 377,960 (its total before the 2023 reissue was released)
23rd June 2023 - 380,885 (including the 2,925 copies that the reissue sold in its first week)

We can see that it was trickle selling quite nicely during the years that they were active, but then it really slowed down when they took their hiatus. Streaming is not their strong point, so it continues to sell slowly.

I wish I knew when exactly it passed 300,000... maybe that info is out there somewhere, but I haven't been able to find anything between Dec '03 and Dec '07! It did re-enter the chart in late 2006, so maybe it was pushed over 300k during that time?

What's interesting is that the album was certified on 28th November 2003. That being for shipments of over 300,000 (back in those days, it wasn't based on over-the-counter sales). So it seems like them shipping out the Sound of the Underground reissue at that point, meant that the album had exceeded 300,000+ shipments, well in advance of it actually selling 300,000.
