I'm currently deleting old PMs because I keep running out of space... I have PMs going back as far as 10 years ago laugh.gif Here's some old sales information I found for Nicola Roberts:

Beat Of My Drum
01. 12/06 - #27 - 12,851 sales
02. 19/06 - #64 - 4,362 sales
03. 26/06 - #88 - 2,763 sales
04. 03/07 - #145 - 1,761 sales
05. 10/07 - #76 - 3,658 sales
06. 17/07 - #50 - 6,664 sales
07. 24/07 - #59 - 4,882 sales
08. 31/07 - #84 - 3,233 sales
09. 07/08 - #96 - 2,581 sales
10. 14/08 - #162 - 1,397 sales
11. 21/08 - #190 - 1,237 sales
Running Total: 45,389 sales

sad.gif It deserved better than that.

Random observation, but the length of time between the releases of Sound of the Underground and Beat of My Drum (3,093 days) is less than Beat of My Drum to now (3,277 days), and I'd like someone to explain to me how all of this time has gone by cry.gif heehee.gif

STOP. This cannot be true! drama.gif

Those sales and chart run for 'Beat of My Drum' strike me as quite decent all things considered. It was an OA/OS release which impacted the chart performance of even the most successful of artists so, considering Nicola was never the 'star' of the band and perhaps the member whose solo material people were least excited for (could be wrong about that), it was good going that this single managed to stay afloat like that. She had a solid promotional campaign too, I recall. Makes me wonder how it may have performed if released the traditional way.

No way! ohmy.gif This sounds so surreal, the release of BOMD doesn't seem that far away at all. It's crazy how time flies!

^And I agree about the sales being quite decent as well, especially when you consider it only spent one week in the top 40. Ofcourse it should have done much better, but I actually expected sales to be lower. Should atleast be over 50K now.

'Long Hot Summer' has achieved 3m streams in the UK according to the OCC:

QUOTE
Girls Aloud's extremely subtle and not at all suggestive Long Hot Summer is the epitome of mid-Noughties pop. The group's chief producer Brian Higgins of production outfit Xenomania described it as "a distaster record", made in a panic when they were approached for a possible inclusion in the Herbie: Fully Reloaded soundtrack. It was Girls Aloud's first song to miss the UK Top 5, but 15 years on it's still getting us worked up, with 3 million streams to date.

Posted by: Chemistry 15th August 2020, 11:34 AM

That's still quite low, isn't it? Generally speaking I'm always quite shocked to see how low their streams are, I know they were quite local, but still. The Saturdays, who basically did not have any hits outside of the UK, are doing so much better on streaming which seems bizarre.

Long hot summer was never a big fave of mine, not song i listen to much.

Sound Of The Underground has 874,000 UK chart sales to date, including 22 million streams since 2014. Scared Trust's stands at 270,000 - and is clocking up an average 6,378 plays in the UK every week.

Those streaming numbers are so low for a classic cry.gif Also interesting that total streaming numbers at at 24 million, so only 2 million streams from outside the UK?

Posted by: jsweetxe 7th December 2020, 11:34 AM

I'm shocked and appalled at Nicola's Yo-Yo not even entering the top 100.. I know she wasn't huge but god that is such a good song. Probably one of my favourites from them as a group/soloists overall.

That's 24 million streams on Spotify worldwide - 22 million streams is the total for all platforms (YouTube, Apple, Amazon etc) in the UK only.

Here's all the information I could find out about Something Kinda Ooooh and Call the Shots in the midweeks. Both were unfortunate enough to be #2 throughout the midweek updates, only to be pushed down to #3 in time for the official chart. sad.gif

~~~~~
Something Kinda Ooooh
Midweeks
Tues 24th Oct 2006: #2 Girls Aloud (12,559), #3 Fedde Le Grand (8,469) [4,090 difference]
Wed 25th Oct 2006: #2 Girls Aloud (19,235), #3 Fedde Le Grand (16,138) [3,097 difference]
Thurs 26th Oct 2006: #2 Girls Aloud, #3 Fedde Le Grand
Fri 27th Oct 2006: #2 Girls Aloud (29,141), #3 Fedde Le Grand (28,592) [549 difference]
Sunday 29th Oct 2006 Chart
#2 - 46,896 - Fedde Le Grand - Put Your Hands Up for Detroit
#3 - 42,114 - Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Ooooh [4,782 sales behind]
The week after that, it started out at midweek #2 again but was quickly overtaken:
Midweeks
Tues 31st Oct 2006: #2 Girls Aloud, #3 Bodyrox
Wed 1st Nov 2006: #2 Bodyrox (9.9k), #3 Girls Aloud (9.5k)
Thurs 2nd Nov 2006: #2 Bodyrox, #3 Girls Aloud
Fri 3rd Nov 2006: #2 Bodyrox (16k), #3 Girls Aloud (15k)
Sunday 5th Nov 2006 Chart
#2 - 23,181 - Bodyrox - Yeah Yeah
#3 - 21,695 - Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Ooooh [1,486 sales behind]
Something Kinda Ooooh sold 147,000 in 2006 & 34,000 in 2007 - 180,919 total at the end of 2007.
Yeah Yeah sold 104,500 in 2006 and 46,000 in 2007 - 150,500 total at the end of 2007.
Both are Silver certified. Last known figure for Something Kinda Ooooh was 341,589 in August 2019. I have no idea what Yeah Yeah's total is these days!
~~~~~

Call the Shots

Midweeks
Tues 27th Nov 2007: #2 Girls Aloud (10,745), #3 T2 (9,597) [1,148 difference]
Wed 28th Nov 2007: #2 Girls Aloud (15,507), #3 T2 (14,068) [1,439 difference]
Thurs 29th Nov 2007: #2 Girls Aloud (19,224), #3 T2 (17,854) [1,370 difference]
Fri 30th Nov 2007: #2 Girls Aloud (22,403), #3 T2 (21,413) [990 difference]

Sunday 2nd Dec 2007 Chart
#2 - 31,768 - T2 feat. Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
#3 - 31,457 - Girls Aloud - Call the Shots [311 sales behind]

Call the Shots wasn't too far off #2 in its second week at #3 either, although it was midweek #3 in every update during that week:

Sunday 9th Dec Chart
#2 - 22,902 - T2 feat. Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken
#3 - 22,135 - Girls Aloud - Call the Shots [767 sales behind]

The following week, Sunday 16th Dec, Call the Shots was finally higher in the chart than Heartbroken... GA: #5 [18,455 sales] and T2: #9 [17,844 sales]. Just 611 sales separating them on that occasion, that was a tight chart!

By the end of 2008, Heartbroken had sold 240,145 while Call the Shots was on 249,495.

Interestingly both songs of these songs went Gold in 2020. Call the Shots on 14th February, Heartbroken on 10th July.

~~~~~
Considering that both SKO and CTS ended up outselling Yeah Yeah and Heartbroken respectively, it's a pity they GA didn't quite manage to nab #2 peaks with those singles! I can't argue that SKO deserved better than Put Your Hands Up for Detroit though - that single went Gold in 2019.
Initially McFly - Star Girl prevented Fedde Le Grand from #1. Star Girl was highly front-loaded at the time, with a chart run of 1-9-19-27-42-62-93-x-98-99-x, meaning that it was only ahead of Something Kinda Ooooh in the charts in that week it was at #1. Star Girl achieved just 86,000 sales in 2006, whereas Something Kinda Ooooh managed 147,000. Something Kinda Ooooh passed 200,000 sales towards the end of 2008 (14th December 2008 - 206,344). Star Girl didn't reach 200k until June 2015. Interestingly Star Girl has become increasingly popular in the streaming era though... it went Gold (400k+) in May 2020. In 2006 I was pretty aggrieved that McFly's ardent fanbase prevented SKO from a better peak, but in the long run... somehow it's ended up being more memorable for the public!
'Something Kinda Ooooh' quite comfortably had the biggest weekly sale for a #3 position in 2006. Only three other songs sold 30k+ whilst at that position:
04/11 | 42,114 | Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Ooooh
29/07 | 32,322 | Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - Hips Don’t Lie
03/06 | 31,800 | Infernal - From Paris To Berlin
02/12 | 30,582 | Emma Bunton - Downtown
Would have been enough for #1 in a lot of weeks that year!
Posted by: Jay❄ 18th February 2021, 06:52 PM
cry.gif That will always hurt! ( laugh.gif ) Trust them to choose such a difficult week!
The previous week when it was only available as a download, resulted in a rather surprisingly high entry at #5. I remember being so thrilled with that. They were the first UK act to achieve a Top 5 hit with just downloads! So that's another reason why it only moving up to #3 a week later felt a tad deflating.
When it entered at #5 (14,308 sales) it was only 491 sales behind that week's #3. The #1 only sold 29,201! If only Something Kinda Ooooh had been scheduled a week earlier... it seems very likely that they'd have got a #1 single.
Despite the disappointment about the #3 peak, The Sound of Girls Aloud getting to #1 a week later was certainly a moment that made up for it - the fanbase was overjoyed! wub.gif
P.S. G'won Emma Bunton with that high #3 sale! Though that was another frustrating moment for me, it was only 57 sales behind #2!! (The chart fortunes of girl groups and solo girl group members have clearly been a source of stress for me over the years kink.gif )
Posted by: Jay❄ 18th February 2021, 07:18 PM
These are Girls Aloud's sales as of 30th December 2007... which I appreciate probably isn't that interesting, but I found this information via my old Girls Aloud Discography site through the Wayback Machine, so I thought I may as well post it!
590,344 - Sound of the Underground
197,359 - Jump
186,679 - I'll Stand By You
180,919 - Something Kinda Ooooh
147,918 - Love Machine
128,459 - Call the Shots
122,508 - No Good Advice
119,323 - Biology
108,995 - Walk This Way
89,937 - The Show
84,700 - Life Got Cold
81,867 - Sexy! No No No...
74,326 - I Think We're Alone Now
66,111 - Wake Me Up
62,447 - See the Day
51,590 - Long Hot Summer
43,873 - Whole Lotta History
2000s sales were so depressing. Girls Aloud were incredibly popular, yet 5 years into their career only one of their singles had sold enough to be certified! The major success of The Sound of Girls Aloud a year before indicates how much affection the public had for their hits; the singles sales really weren't an accurate reflection (the peak positions were, at least).
By the way, while I was researching the midweeks information for Something Kinda Ooooh, it led me to remember an annoying chart rule that was in place in 2006: if a single's physical was deleted, it wasn't eligible for the singles chart. A few of Girls Aloud's singles were appearing in the midweeks in October/November 2006, but they were 'starred out' (indicating that they wouldn't be eligible to chart). For instance, Biology would theoretically have been midweek #145 on Friday 27th October 2006 if no singles were starred out (only 377 sales was needed for that position!). Anyway, they were robbed of achieving some more chart positions in their chart runs sad.gif
Posted by: Jay❄ 16th April 2021, 02:40 PM
These are my latest estimates for some of the singles:
896,000 - Sound of the Underground
699,000 - The Promise
482,000 - Love Machine
423,000 - Call the Shots
386,000 - Something Kinda Ooooh
383,000 - Jump
236,000 - Biology
235,000 - Something New
199,000 - The Loving Kind
170,000 - No Good Advice
164,000 - Walk This Way
161,000 - Sexy! No No No...
155,000 - Untouchable
134,000 - The Show
112,000 - I Think We're Alone Now
99,000 - Long Hot Summer
80,000 - Whole Lotta History
I'm a little unsure about Biology and Something New though. Something New could have pushed ahead of Biology by now, if their popularity positions on Spotify is anything to go by. But based on the last couple of sales updates we had, Biology was increasing at a faster rate.
It seems The Loving Kind could be coming for silver in June, although that's based on the sales increase from July 2017 to August 2019. It could have slowed down or increased its weekly sales since then. Hopefully it's still on track for silver fairly soon though.
Jump and Something Kinda Ooooh could be gold by the end of 2021!
Posted by: Liam.k. 16th April 2021, 02:48 PM
Thanks for that Jay! Their sales are looking so much more representative of their success thanks to streams. I'm looking forward to the day 'Sound of the Underground' passes 1m!
Posted by: London 17th April 2021, 12:49 AM
I’m surprised none of their songs have passed a million, but like you say, sales were depressing in the 00s. Imagine some of those sales totals if they have released musics later.
Posted by: Chemistry 17th April 2021, 01:48 PM
It's quite shocking to see, once again, how low sales were during most of their prime-time. Especially singles like The Show, you would never think The Loving Kind or even Untouchable outsold that one.
Posted by: Jay❄ 4th May 2021, 03:48 PM
Something random: I was looking at download charts from 2006, and was reminded that their Megamix reached #43 in the download chart on 5th November 2006.
It was ineligible to chart in the singles chart, because only singles with a physical release were allowed to chart (these eligible singles were also allowed 1 week in the chart with just download sales, prior to the physical release). This rule was changed in January 2007, when any song was able to chart if it it sold enough downloads, without requiring a physical.
Kasabian - Shoot the Runner was #42 in the download chart that week, and #65 in the official chart - this being its "download only" week prior to its physical release week. Madonna - Jump was at #59 in the official chart, with 2,246 sales, and was download only that week. I assume if the singles chart had been a free-for-all like it was in 2007, then Girls Aloud's Megamix would have made the official Top 100? And maybe sold about 2000 copies.
~
I've also just remembered that one of their Christmas songs appeared in the midweeks in 2007, but ultimately it didn't manage to hold on to the Top 200. That was 'Merry Xmas Everybody', appearing at midweek #135 on Tuesday 4th December 2007 (354 sales). A day later it was down to #170 (380 sales). On Thursday it wasn't midweek Top 200 - the #200 had sold 394. It seems it never re-emerged after that, so I wonder what caused that initial boost in sales for the track?
Call My Name felt absolutely massive while it was being promoted and in its first week on sale, but it fizzled out more quickly than I expected it to (4 weeks in the Top 10, 9 weeks in the Top 40). By the end of 2012 it had sold 421,200 (Gold) and ended as the 34th best seller of the year.
I'm glad its finally gone Platinum, even if it did take 9 years in the end!
Really hoping that The Loving Kind is on the verge of Silver now, I'm so impatient for that to happen! Then Girls Aloud would finally have ten certified singles.
They really chose the most stupid time to break up! I'm not saying they would have had exactly Cheryl's solo success but there is no doubt she took what would have become their 'golden era' and reaped the benefits of it herself. From the break to the finale reunion Cheryl achieved 5 more top 10 hits which I'm sure would have been Girls Aloud's had they released the singles during that period.
Hopefully it's not too much longer until Something Kinda Ooooh goes Gold. For a song that was so big at the time, it still only being Silver feels wrong.
After that, I think the most likely next certification would be Love Machine going Platinum ohmy.gif
When it comes to a different song certifying for the first time, unfortunately I think it'll take quite a few years... when I did some estimations a couple of years ago, I had No Good Advice going Silver in 2026, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it took even longer than that. If people had had more taste in 2003 it should have gone Silver that year, not take possibly approaching 25 years cry.gif x
It really shows how low single sales were, generally speaking, between 2003-2006. Something Kinda Ooooh was such a big deal for them, especially compared to Can't Speak French and The Loving Kind which both have the same certifcate now.
Posted by: -Jay- 22nd December 2021, 02:26 PM
Completely agree! It's such a shame that sales were in the doldrums then, it really didn't reflect how big particular singles felt at the time. By today's standards I feel like Something Kinda Ooooh would be Platinum for sure, if not double Platinum! Oh well cry.gif
'The Loving Kind' should be a million seller. On a more serious note, I feel glad that their run during a climate of poor singles sales is more than made up for in album sales.
'No Good Advice' and "approaching 25 years" in the same sentence has properly shaken me up. ohmy.gif That'll feel so weird, remembering the release of it so well and the week it entered the chart.
Posted by: -Jay- 9th January 2022, 03:26 AM
Back in August 2019, based on updated figures from that month vs. previously known sales, I estimated when the following singles could go silver or gold:
January 2020 - Gold - Call the Shots
February 2020 - Gold - Love Machine
June 2021 - Silver - The Loving Kind
November 2021 - Gold - Jump
November 2021 - Gold - Something Kinda Ooooh
In the end, this happened:
February 2020 - Gold - Love Machine
February 2020 - Gold - Call the Shots (1 month later)
November 2021 - Gold - Jump
December 2021 - Silver - The Loving Kind (6 months later)
December 2021 - Gold - Something Kinda Ooooh (1 month later)
Evidently The Loving Kind really slowed down (and I wonder if it's not helped by the fact it's not included on 'This Is Girls Aloud' on Spotify unsure.gif )
Everything else wasn't too far off or did happen on time. Here are other predictions I made in August 2019, covering the upcoming 10 years:
05/2023 - Platinum - Love Machine
08/2026 - Silver - No Good Advice
06/2027 - Silver - Sexy! No No No...
12/2027 - Platinum - Jump
05/2028 - 2xPlatinum - Sound of the Underground
09/2028 - Silver - Walk This Way
03/2029 - Platinum - Call the Shots
08/2029 - Platinum - Something Kinda Ooooh
05/2031 - Silver - Untouchable
It'll be interesting to see whether Love Machine keeps up the pace to be able to go Platinum in less than 18 months from now. Unfortunately it seems that we'll have a long wait for any currently uncertified singles to go Silver, but No Good Advice was the one on track to make it first, ahead of Sexy!, Walk This Way and Untouchable. Here's a reminder of what the sales of those singles were in August 2019:
160,517 - No Good Advice
156,200 - Walk This Way
150,043 - Sexy! No No No…
147,858 - Untouchable
Sadly it isn't one of their better remembered singles and it doesn't seem to have any good playlisting anywhere sad.gif
We had a full sales update on 30th Dec 2007 and at that point No Good Advice had sold 122,508. On 21st June 2009 it was up to 132,917. So it was managing reasonably decent downloads while they were still active, but it's not doing so good in the streaming era.
At the end of 2003 it had sold 105,000 copies, enough to make it the 56th best seller of that year.
Posted by: Willm 10th January 2022, 01:06 PM
Definitely true about playlisting, with 'No Good Advice' in particular it really suffers from being on no major Spotify playlist, 'Sexy No No' on the other hand is used more on major playlists so I wonder if it may overtake 'No Good Advice' at this point
The following singles haven't had enough recent updates to be able to work out some good estimates. But I'll share again what their totals were back in August 2019:
252,727 - I'll Stand by You
242,253 - Can't Speak French
100,055 - Life Got Cold
83,544 - See the Day
83,352 - Wake Me Up
28,922 - Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me
Hopefully I'll Stand by You and Can't Speak French are much closer to 300,000 now. I can only see Wake Me Up, See the Day and Life Got Cold increasing by 10k to 15k at best in the past 3 years.
I wrote a lengthy post regarding Call the Shots midweeks & sales from November/December 2007. I'm sharing the link to the post here so that the information doesn't get lost (I would probably forget which topic I wrote it in) http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=257296&view=findpost&p=7183652
The second of Cheryl's five UK Number 1 singles, Promise This now has chart sales totalling 499,000 - 435,000 of these consisting of digital downloads - as well as total UK streams of 6.3 million.
From the OCC. Increases 9k in a year.
Quite a forgotten #1 but it's nice to see it almost at half a million!
An old total: 427,262 in June 2012. It's certainly been slow progress to 500k.
Girls Aloud's Official Top 20 biggest songs ever revealed
29 March 2023 | By Carl Smith
May 2023 marks 20 years since the release of Girls Aloud's debut album Sound of the Underground.
An LP that spawned four Top 5 singles - its title track, No Good Advice, Life Got Cold and Jump - it truly cemented the Popstars: The Rivals winners as a pop force to be reckoned with, and forged the start of their ongoing relationship with production powerhouse Xenomania.
Now, as Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh prepare to reissue the record with some previously-unreleased material, we've crunched the numbers to reveal the group's biggest songs in the UK.
From the criminally-underrated Long Hot Summer to melancholic masterpiece Call The Shots and the bonkers brilliance of Biology, we've fully updated the girls' Official Top 40 biggest tracks. But before we get into the complete list, let's take a closer look at the Top 5.
5. Jump
Released: 2003
Official Chart peak: 2
UK chart units: 446,000
The group's cover of The Pointer Sisters' 1984 track Jump (For My Love) proved a huge success for Girls Aloud, peaking at Number 2 in November 2003. Recorded for inclusion in Christmas staple Love Actually, Jump has been streamed a total of 20.5 million times in the UK so far.
4. Call The Shots
Released: 2007
Official Chart peak: 3
UK chart units: 462,500
The second single lifted from Girls Aloud's fourth studio album Tangled Up, the sublime Call The Shots comes in third on the list. To date, Call The Shots has been streamed over 14.6 million times in the UK, and is also the group's second most-downloaded song behind The Promise (currently on 297,000 UK downloads).
3. Love Machine
Released: 2004
Official Chart peak: 2
UK chart units: 580,000
Once wrongfully predicted by the group to be - in Nadine Coyle's own words - 'career suicide,' Love Machine is Girls Aloud's third biggest-seller to date. The second single lifted from their What Will The Neighbours Say? album boasts 39 million streams and 127,500 downloads in the UK.
2. The Promise
Released: 2008
Official Chart peak: 1
UK chart units: 765,000
Girls Aloud's fourth and final Number 1 single in the UK, The Promise lands in second place on the list. Having won the group a BRIT Award for Best British Single in 2009, the track is actually their most-downloaded ever (with 517,500 UK downloads and counting).
The Promise has also racked-up over 24 million UK streams to date.
1. Sound of the Underground
Released: 2002
Official Chart peak: 1
UK chart units: 1,028,000
With its iconic opening surf guitar, drum 'n' bass influence and ingenius 'Buy Girls, Bye Boys' marketing campaign, Sound of the Underground reigns as Girls Aloud's biggest single to date in the UK.
Having scored the girls their first UK Number 1 single (and a Christmas Number 1, at that) after a much-publicised chart battle against Popstars: The Rivals competition One True Voice, Sound of the Underground has gone on to shift over 1 million chart units to date.
The track's been streamed 38.8 million times in the UK - just shy of their most-streamed single Love Machine's total - and remains their biggest physical seller (562,000 copies).
Oh. My. God!
Posted by: Liam.k. 29th March 2023, 12:22 PM
Sound of the Underground sold 557k by the end of 2003 so has managed 5k physicals since then, wonder how many of that was at Christmas due to the vinyl release?
Really interesting to see how the non-singles rank in terms of sales, especially seeing their megamix above 'Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me' which had sold 29k as of 2019). Makes sense that it's mostly Christmas songs and album tracks from 'Tangled Up', 'Out of Control' and 'Ten' that make up their best selling non-singles; judging by Spotify numbers I would assume 'Graffiti My Soul' is highest placed out of the earlier album tracks and probably wasn't far from the Top 40. Their covers of 'With Every Heartbeat' and 'Teenage Dirtbag' featuring is interesting, particularly the latter which isn't even on Spotify.
Omg they have a million seller now? Deserved!
Posted by: -Jay- 29th March 2023, 09:54 PM
Wow!! So great to have all this information, particularly confirmation that Sound of the Underground has passed 1 million! But I do wish OCC would be a bit more generous and reveal more sales data than just the Top 5.
Maybe this is just me but I’m bemused that their most streamed song has less than half of Busted’s Year 3000 streams (recently revealed to be 80 million?!).
Love Machine has slowed down a bit. Based on how it was performing in 2018-2020 it seemed it would have been on course for 590,000 now, and Platinum by May 2023 - but it’s been revealed as 580,000. So Platinum is seemingly going to take a bit longer. I wonder if it’s been removed (or become less prominent) on a particular playlist?
Beautiful Cause You Love Me still being below Megamix and Theme to St. Trinian’s (with neither of those being available to download or stream for a few years now) - eek! I’m assuming that Megamix is the Something Kinda Ooooh version and that the Something New megamix (which is available) counts separately?
I wonder what has more influence on the album tracks that appear, downloads or streaming? I could see some of them having sold decently enough in the download era, hundreds or maybe even a few thousand in trickle sales… but maybe it’s streaming racking up over the past 9 years that is the main reason for these particular album tracks/B Sides showing? Who knows!
Frustrating that Theme to St. Trinian’s has been unavailable to download or stream for a few years, considering it’s still their best selling non-single.
I really want No Good Advice to be Silver. cry.gif
Since the sales we got in 2019, these singles have swapped places:
Call the Shots and Love Machine (that happened in 2020)
Something Kinda Ooooh and Jump
Biology and Something New
I’ll Stand by You and Can’t Speak French
Walk This Way and Sexy! No No No…
See the Day and Wake Me Up
I remembered this article from December 2015 - https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/classic-christmas-number-1s-girls-aloud-vs-one-true-voice__17236/ - and they shared that it had sold 560,272 physicals at that point.
The 7" vinyl sold less than 1,733 copies but more than 1,293 copies in its release week ( http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=257890&view=findpost&p=7248805 ). So it seems 2,000-ish at best, for them to state 562,000 physicals total, unless it's still <2k and they rounded it up to 562k.
Sorry for triple posting blush.gif
Increases since last updates (I'm assuming the data is from up to 24th March 2023:
Sound of the Underground
874,000 - 27th November 2020
1,028,000 - 24th March 2023
(+154,000 in 121 weeks)
= 1272.73 per week on average
Predictions:
1,100,000 - April 2024
1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] - October 2025
^ It seems like it might have crossed 1,000,000 back in October 2022? If so, that was a couple of months in advance of its 20th anniversary!
The Promise
712,140 - 22nd October 2021
765,000 - 24th March 2023
(+52,860 in 74 weeks)
= 714.32 per week on average
Predictions:
800,000 - March 2024
900,000 - November 2026
1,000,000 - July 2029
1,100,000 - March 2032
1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] - November 2034
^ The Promise felt so massive at the time that I feel it deserves the status of having sold a million already, but it looks like it might take more than 20 years after its release for it to manage that.
Love Machine
400,000 [Gold] - 7th February 2020
580,000 - 24th March 2023
(+180,000 in 163 weeks)
= 1,104.29 per week on average
Predictions:
600,000 [Platinum] - August 2023
700,000 - April 2025
800,000 - January 2027
900,000 - October 2028
1,000,000 - July 2030
1,100,000 - April 2032
1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] - December 2033
^ However I wonder if its weekly sales might be lower now than the average suggests. I'll still be keeping my fingers crossed for it to go Platinum this year!
Call the Shots
400,000 [Gold] - 14th February 2020
462,500 - 24th March 2023
(+62,500 in 162 weeks)
= 385.80 per week on average
Predictions:
500,000 - February 2025
600,000 [Platinum] - January 2030
^ With how sales work for current hits nowadays, I'm sure a hit as big as Call the Shots would have gone Platinum within a couple of years at least. Instead it took 12+ years to go Gold and will possibly need 22+ years to go Platinum. sleep.gif Although this is still up there with their most streamed singles (it is 6th on their Spotify) these weekly sales are pretty low. It's pretty much selling at a rate of 20,000 per year.
Jump
400,000 [Gold] - 26th November 2021
446,000 - 24th March 2023
(+46,000 in 69 weeks)
= 666.67 per week on average
Predictions:
500,000 - October 2024
600,000 [Platinum] - August 2027
----------
Quite an injustice that many of their excellent singles aren't even certified yet. It stings a bit when you see numerous old songs sailing past Silver/Gold/Platinum in recent years, some of which didn't even chart. Sadly quite a few of these Girls Aloud songs just aren't very prominent or widely remembered. I'm hopeful that No Good Advice will go Silver within the next couple of years (it deserved that in 2003 let alone ~2025 sleep.gif ), and I'd say that there's quite a reasonable chance that both Sexy! No No No... and Walk This Way can crawl their way to Silver status before the end of the 2020s. Not holding my breath for Untouchable or The Show to manage that. sad.gif
I feel like ‘Year 3000’ is a lot more well-known and well-remembered than any Girls Aloud song so that doesn’t surprise me hugely. What does surprise me is ‘Revolution in the Head’ appearing and not something like ‘Love is the Key’ instead.
Agreed, 'Year 3000' seems to have taken on a life of its own. At least the girls have more consistent streams across a wider range of their singles.
Thanks for all the analysis Jay, much appreciated as always!
I feel like the sales of the French version of 'Can't Speak French' should really count towards the original. thinking.gif
Posted by: spiceboy 31st March 2023, 10:29 AM
I find it really annoying that random tracks from yesteryears and things like One Direction and solo album tracks or songs peaking at #16 or #22 etc hitting those marks too. It really makes actual hits from the past not look like proper hits anymore.
Busted's Year 3000 has truly taken on a life of it's own!
Posted by: -Jay- 31st March 2023, 11:05 AM
It probably doesn't help that I never particularly liked Year 3000 the time and I can't say 20 years has helped it grow on me. laugh.gif I guess I must have been under a rock and didn't realise it had developed into such a majorly remembered classic. The leap from 160,000 in 2003 to over 1 million now feels a bit wild. I mean, it being on 80m means its streamed almost twice as often as Spice Girls - Stop (44m). drama.gif And Stop went from 331,000 in its year of release to recently being revealed to be on 776,000... and it'll take a few more years to get to a million. Grr!
My two favourite Busted singles from their heyday still aren't certified cry.gif You Said No and Who's David!
Back to Girls Aloud, I hate how low some of their sales are because certain singles did feel big while they were out, like The Show. Only 136,000 by 2021. sad.gif It feels like pretty much anything released nowadays can certify, so this is quite the injustice! Even Love Machine which has come on leaps and bounds, it's still taking quite a bit of time to go Platinum.
It's a shame that its weekly sales have slowed down a bit... I wonder if it was removed from a fairly significant playlist?
Posted by: Liam.k. 21st September 2023, 09:04 PM
Having 'Sound of the Underground', 'Love Machine' and 'The Promise' as their three Platinum singles feels right, it's their holy trinity of 'signature songs'.
I guess you're right that 'Love Machine' must have been taken off a playlist. 300 chart sales seems like relatively a lot to lose and to not be too far from the weekly average of 'Jump' too (although hasn't 'Jump' risen a lot on Spotify? Maybe that's had some better playlisting in place of 'Love Machine').
Sound of the Underground has increased from 1,028,000 to 1,065,000 (+37,000)
Love Machine has increased from 580,000 to 605,000 (+25,000)
The Promise has increased from 765,000 to 783,000 (+18,000)
Jump has increased from 446,000 to 460,000 (+14,000)
Call the Shots has increased from 462,500 to 475,000 (+12,500)
The average rounded sales per week are:
1,156 - Sound of the Underground
781 - Love Machine
563 - The Promise
438 - Jump
391 - Call the Shots
I'm a bit surprised that Jump isn't increasing far more than that!
At the rate they are selling at per week, these are milestones that could occur in the 2020s. Although a reunion/becoming an active band could do wonders for their back catalogue and make their weekly sales increase.
Sound of the Underground
1,100,000 (in June 2024)
1,200,000 [2xPlatinum] (in January 2026)
1,300,000 (in October 2027)
1,400,000 (in May 2029)
The Promise
800,000 (in June 2024)
900,000 (in October 2027)
Love Machine
700,000 (in March 2026)
800,000 (in August 2028)
Call the Shots
500,000 (in January 2025)
600,000 [Platinum] (in December 2029)
Jump
500,000 (in August 2025)
600,000 [Platinum] (in December 2029)
Only one change to their Top 40 list since March - Every Now and Then has overtaken Revolution in the Head.
Having 'Sound of the Underground', 'Love Machine' and 'The Promise' as their three Platinum singles feels right, it's their holy trinity of 'signature songs'.
I totally agree these are the holy trinity of their signature songs!
Love Made Me Do It must be over 100,000 now?
Posted by: 365 27th November 2023, 04:36 PM
Really hoping having them in the public eye can speed things up again, The Show, Untouchable and No Good Advice need to be silver before next year is out. If they do Glasto it'll give their back catalogue a huge boost, too.
Posted by: Last Dreamer 27th November 2023, 05:09 PM
'Love Machine' is the one from their worst singles.
Posted by: Delicate 30th January 2024, 11:30 PM
How far is Crazy Stupid Love from platinum? It was already at 524,000 units in 2020, and that was four years ago. Surely not many more years to go?
Hopefully Cheryl does a medley of her hits on the tour to give her catalogue a boost too.
Posted by: JLJ 31st January 2024, 05:20 PM
I love Cheryl but a no to a Cheryl hits medley on this tour (it’s all about the Girls Aloud hits)!
Not just a Cheryl solo no but a no to any solo hits (they all did try the solo route at least).
I have a feeling this could be their biggest streaming year yet especially when the tour kicks off. It would be good to see some certifications though and a boost of sales for their catalogue.
Posted by: Padamic Tension 31st January 2024, 11:39 PM
I would also be a no for a Cheryl solo medley on this tour,
Posted by: spiceboy 1st February 2024, 02:28 PM
NO Cheryl solo! If she wants to be the opening act then she can, otherwise the show it GIRLS ALOUD only! They have way too many amazing songs to put Cheryl's (weaker) solo stuff in there.
Posted by: Padamic Tension 1st February 2024, 10:43 PM
I just think it's better leave Cheryl's solo out completly of this tour and let it all be about girls aloud.
Here's some random information - Girls Aloud's peaks/weeks in the UK Download Singles chart!
The chart varied in size at different periods in time:
20th June 2004 to 22nd August 2004: Top 20 (Test Data)
29th August 2004 to 28th November 2004: Top 20
5th December 2004 to 2nd April 2006: Top 40
9th April 2006 to 13th August 2006: Top 200
20th August 2006 to 29th October 2006: Top 100
5th November 2006 to 11th February 2007: Top 200
18th February 2007 to 9th May 2010: Top 100
16th May 2010 to present: Top 200
NOTE: The singles chart remained physical sales only until the Sunday 17th April 2005 chart - so download sales of The Show, Love Machine, I'll Stand by You and Wake Me Up did not contribute to their sales in the singles chart until that date and beyond.
The Show actually pre-dates the official launch of the download chart (29th August 2004). However, as early as 20th June 2004, the OCC gathered together "test data" charts. The Show didn't enter the test data download chart until Sunday 11th July 2004, whereas in the singles chart it entered on 4th July (following its Monday 28th June 2004 release date). Either The Show wasn't legally available to download in the first week on sale, or it was but didn't sell enough downloads to make it into the Top 20.
Love Machine 14 weeks in Top 40. 22 weeks in Top 200.
I'll Stand by You - 8 weeks in Top 40 (7 in 2004/5, and 1 in 2021).
Wake Me Up - 5 weeks in Top 40. It was available to download from the 'What Will the Neighbours Say?' album in advance of its physical single release, and entered the download Top 40 a week earlier than it entered the official singles chart.
Long Hot Summer - 2 weeks in Top 40.
Biology - 8 weeks in Top 40 / 9 weeks in Top 100 / 15 weeks in Top 200.
See the Day - 5 weeks in Top 40 / 6 weeks in Top 200. It was available to download from the 'Chemistry' album two weeks earlier than its physical single release.
Whole Lotta History - 2 weeks in Top 40 / 4 weeks in Top 200.
Something Kinda Ooooh - 12 weeks in Top 40 / 18 weeks in Top 100 / 18 weeks in Top 200. It was made available to download 1 week earlier than the physical single release.
I Think We're Alone Now - 6 weeks in Top 40 / 11 weeks in Top 100 / 15 weeks in Top 200. It first entered the download chart in the week that 'The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits' was released.
Girls Aloud Megamix - 3 weeks in Top 100 / 5 weeks in Top 200.
Sound of the Underground - 1 week in Top 100 / 6 weeks in Top 200. Although it first entered the Download Top 200 on 5th November 2006 (the week of the release of 'The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits', it didn't make the Download Top 100 until 10th September 2021.
Walk This Way - 3 weeks in Top 40 / 6 weeks in Top 100.
Sexy! No No No... - 5 weeks in Top 40 / 14 weeks in Top 100. It was made available to download 3 days before the physical single release.
Call the Shots - 15 weeks in Top 40 / 25 weeks in Top 100. It was available to download from the 'Tangled Up' album one week earlier than its physical single release.
Thank you for posting! I wonder if they’re very recent totals?
Biology is now so close to overtaking I’ll Stand By You! ohmy.gif
Posted by: Padamic Tension 30th April 2024, 08:49 PM
Really really happy to see something new in the top 10 and i hope it can overtake ill stand by you and biology, something new has definitely been one of their songs to benefit from the streaming era as its sales have thankfully climbed since its initial chart run. It is disappointing though that no good advice is not there.
Posted by: -Jay- 1st May 2024, 04:09 PM
^ Both Biology and Something New are on track to overtake I'll Stand By You, but within the last 5 years Biology overtook Something New, and I'd be surprised if Something New ever surges to the point of going back ahead of Biology.
We had a full sales update back in August 2019 (I can't believe it's approaching 5 years!). Here's a comparison of the sales from back then, and now. The order I've listed these songs in, is in the 2024 Top 10 best sellers order:
2019 (accurate sales) | 2024 (approx sales) | Increase (approx sales) -
800,338 | 1,100,000 | +299,650 - Sound Of The Underground
634,748 | 805,000 | +170,250 - The Promise
364,321 | 625,000 | +260,700 - Love Machine
389,409 | 488,000 | +98,600 - Call The Shots
327,322 | 472,000 | +144,700 - Jump
341,589 | 453,000 | +111,400 - Something Kinda Ooooh
242,253 | 304,000 | +61,750 - Can't Speak French
252,727 | 287,000 | +34,250 - I'll Stand By You
214,055 | 286,000 | +71,950 - Biology
216,405 | 279,000 | +62,600 - Something New
Predictions:
Change of Top 10 order
June 2024 - Biology overtakes I'll Stand By You (predicted sales for both: 288,000)
September 2025 - Something New overtakes I'll Stand By You (predicted sales for both: 297,000)
December 2025 - Jump overtakes Call the Shots (predicted sales for both: 522,000)
Sales milestones
500,000+ Call the Shots in November 2024
500,000+ Jump in April 2025
300,000+ Biology in April 2025
700,000+ Love Machine in September 2025
1,200,000+ Sound of the Underground in December 2025
300,000+ Something New in December 2025
300,000+ I'll Stand By You in January 2026
500,000+ Something Kinda Ooooh in May 2026
900,000+ The Promise in December 2026
It's a shame that No Good Advice hasn't managed to go Silver yet. It was on 178,000 in February 2022, but evidently has still not reached 200k, 2 years on. sad.gif
Random: At the end of 2007, when Girls Aloud were 17 singles deep into their career, I'll Stand By You ranked as their 3rd best seller at that point. Their best sellers list from then is posted http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=233674&view=findpost&p=6801751.
Interesting to see the updated information for songs like I’ll stand by you biology and something new. Surely No good advice must be really close to silver.
Wish we would get updated totals for spice girls top 10 like this (would be all but headlines lol)
It really is about time! cheeseblock.png Elated that No Good Advice is finally silver! And it did it on the date that I saw them live wub.gif
Now we need Sexy to be certified! Potentially it's not too far away. In August 2019 its sales were 150,043, compared to No Good Advice being on 160,517 at that point.
