Robbie Williams may keep the top spot on the album chart, against new releases from The Who, with their first record in 13 years WHO, and Camila Cabello's sophomore album Romance. Other releases include Liam Payne's LP1, Colin Thackery Love Changes Everything, and Kylie Minogue Golden Live in Concert

Just seen the Robbie Williams Christmas show is on at 10.55 tonight, seems a bit pointless - not exactly prime time due to Im a celeb - should have waited until next Sunday and had it on at 8pm!

Blimey that's too late, especially on a Sunday as people head to bed earlier for work next day. Should have been prime time as you say, 8 or 9 pm. Wonder if it's repeated nearer Christmas though.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 8th December 2019, 04:30 PM

Oh I've got utv which has an election debate on at 8, so they've had to move it. Good to see it's on at a decent time and may effect his sales this week.

Posted by: Crazy Chris-tmas 8th December 2019, 04:30 PM

It should keep him at No.1. Can't see The Who doing it.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 8th December 2019, 04:31 PM

lol I am in a different country I guess!

Posted by: Jack 8th December 2019, 04:31 PM

Intrigued to see how Liam and Camila do, I think both could potentially miss the Top 10!

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 8th December 2019, 04:33 PM

Yeh Camila especially has had a really poor comeback after establishing herself with Havana in the last album release.

I would have thought Camila will be comfortably Top 10, no idea how Liam will do though - around the #15 mark maybe?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th December 2019, 04:36 PM

Liam has no chance of top 10 I think, not sure about Camila, she may get the dreaded number 11.

Posted by: dobcember 8th December 2019, 04:38 PM

Dance Monkey will break the record for most weeks at #1 in UK chart history by a female artist (if we don't count Kyla I suppose), I genuinely cannot get my head around that. What's most impressive is that the other long runners of recent years (Drake/Ed Sheeran/Bieber) were all well established acts so for a complete unknown to achieve something like this is astounding regardless of your thoughts on the song itself!

Posted by: Bjork 8th December 2019, 04:45 PM

Camila has had a huge hit (Senorita) and millions of top tv promo
Liam's reviews should scare even his fans

Posted by: 𝕮𝖖𝖒x 8th December 2019, 04:46 PM

Hopefully Ellie is top 20

I do have to respect this even if it's an absolutely atrocious song that I'll never understand becoming as huge as it is. A silver lining of it sneaking by the ACR rules, in the name of chart stats tongue.gif

Posted by: dancember 8th December 2019, 05:01 PM

I'd be surprised if Liam Payne charts top 20, I think he's coming for a huge flop.
Camila will probably be somewhere between 6-15, but I think missing the top 10 is more likely.
Robbie will hold #1 easy.

Camila's going to bomb seriously hard with this album, it's all been a bit of a damp squib this time around for her. sad.gif

She's gone from releasing one of my favourite albums of last year to releasing some of the dullest and uninspired music I've heard in a long time this year sad.gif What's happened?!

Posted by: Michael Bubré 8th December 2019, 05:33 PM

This Camila album has been handled really badly despite clearly having potential to capitalise off 'Señorita', just throwing out songs left right and centre and not focusing enough on any of them for them to really stick. Done even worse in the US where 'Liar' didn't even become the middling hit it managed to be here! It also doesn't help her case that most of the songs have been pretty bad/mediocre.

Ellie will be a strong top 10 contender but surely she's not going to #1 on Amazon (and now YouTube I guess) alone... laugh.gif

Lower than I expected for Harry, a little disappointed! #16 on Spotify yesterday but behind several Christmas songs that are on ACR.

This is his best track after Grace so not one I mind so much hanging around near the top.

he could do the same trick that Ed did with Take me back to London and release a 2nd version as a duet with someone or with a guest
and then the 2 versions combined could give him the #1

he also doesn't have a video out

how much Spotify data is usually included in this chart? I wonder if she's benefiting a bit because the infamously slow data producing platform would be costing everyone *but* her streams here.

it's also crazy how the Amazon Xmas effect has grown since last year

typically it's just Friday's streaming data for all platforms for this first look chart because for whatever reason they can't ever get yesterday's streaming data in on time.

Posted by: gavindeejay 8th December 2019, 06:59 PM

Wow! Never expected an Amazon exclusive to get this high! Will be interested in seeing the sales

Posted by: gooddelta 8th December 2019, 06:59 PM

I love Ellie's version of River, and the original has always been a beautiful song, and one that should have been a UK hit.

But this sets such a scary precedent. I bet there will be a lot of artists wanting to go Amazon exclusive with normal singles from this point on, knowing they'll have the full force of Alexa behind them (especially if they can wrangle the top spot on tons of different playlists - obviously the effect is amplified at Christmas). It's pretty scary how much passive playlisting influences the charts!

Ah, thought that might be the case. So it'll be a question of whether she'll be offset more by an inflated early showing or if the song is genuinely growing more swell day by day as to where she ends up on Friday.

That'll be because she's had a sales boost from being 59p on iTunes I think, sales are always more exaggerated in the First Look chart as the streaming data takes time to catch up (also Dua was ahead of Stormzy in the First Look chart last week as well). I can't imagine there's much of a gap between them at all. It's Ellie being ahead of Stormzy that is rather concerning laugh.gif

So bizarre that Taylor Swift, Little Mix and Mabel all release new Christmas songs that gain no traction or playlist support, yet Amazon provides easy cover hits for Ellie Goulding and John Legend, neither of who have had a major hit in years! Spotify need to get their act together and shake up their tired playlists or they could lose ground to their more dynamic and reactive competition.

Let's be honest that cover of River could be by Samantha Mumba and it would still be #2 thanks to Amazon. Which is such a travesty for the charts.

Agreed, it just feels like a fake achievement.

Tbh it could be any song by any artist with this push from Amazon and it would be #2. River is a good song but it isn't like anyone was checking for the original either bar a miniscule amount of people.

It might not just be Alexa that is helping to push 'River'. I posted this response to a question someone asked over at Haven about how Amazon seems to be having quite an effect on the charts. I don't have Alexa but I do have an Amazon Music app on my computer and for this month I am able to stream music from Amazon Music for free:

Anyone who is signed up to Amazon Prime can access Amazon Music. I signed up last week on a month's trial (therefore it's free for this month) simply to watch the Premier League football matches they are showing this month. Not only do I get the football for free I also get all Amazon deliveries for free and can stream music on Amazon Music, also for free and with no adverts.

Apparently Amazon Prime has 15 million subscribers in the UK and the Premier League screenings (there's more to come on Boxing Day) has apparently led to many thousands more signing up. If those figures are true then more people have access to Amazon Music (which as a paying subscriber service means streams are weighted higher) than are paying subcribers to Spotify or Apple Music.

Just to add, when you access Amazon Music through the app, at least on a computer, the first track on the first playlist that displays is 'River' by Ellie Goulding... 'Happy Christmas (War Is Over)' by John Legend is also there though it's track 9.

I don't know what % of people who are Prime members actually use their membership to stream music - I didn't even know I could until after I'd signed up to Amazon Prime - but it would only take a relatively small % of all Prime subscribers to stream music to have some effect on the charts, especially when a track is exclusive to Amazon.

Posted by: pes 9th December 2019, 01:03 AM

To me the difference chart between Katy Perry amazon original last year and Ellie this year is crazy, do so many people realised they have amazon prime music, it needs to be more to

Plus did you notice that on the top songs listened some tracks do not appear at all like Wham or Leona original version of One more sleep, why they have this glitch wtf, not even in their most listened profile page appear

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 9th December 2019, 01:52 AM

Really didn't expect to see ellie so high but good on her, I thought harry styles would be higher.

Posted by: Crazy Chris-tmas 9th December 2019, 08:42 AM

I can't for the life of me understand Robbie's album position on Amazon's sales chart. He's still only at 7 after last night's show, up from 10 and Rod's still No.1. Robbie should be much higher.

Posted by: iHype. 9th December 2019, 10:24 AM

Ellie is definitely benefitting from extreme Amazon promotion with Alexa. I'm guessing anytime someone asks Alexa to play Holiday music, her song is the first one played.

Maybe a rule where Holiday tracks limited to one service wouldn't be eligible to chart should be done if in the future any other Amazon exclusives keep being #1 contenders simply from Amazon's humongous promotion.

Liar could’ve been really huge, it had lots of potential but instead of focusing on promoting it, she started releasing random dull songs left and right, and it really hurt her promotion...

The song is only #17 on Amazon's sales chart despite being exclusively sold there, so clearly most of its activity is just Amazon recommending it to streamers. I'd be more likely to believe people went out their way to listen to it if it was also #1 on the Amazon Sales chart.

The charts are rigged every single week by playlist payola - the only difference this week is that it’s an exclusive so it’s more noticeable, move along - nothing to see here apart from the fact that even in the streaming era chart rigging is alive and well and easily achievable.

This tbh - if iTunes are struggling then to get a ‘hit’ on Amazons download site must take about 5 sales which is why so many random songs end up being Top 5 on Amazon and nowhere to be seen in the official chart.

She had 'Senorita' and then could've lead with 'Liar' (even if I think it's inferior) or 'My Oh My' with a full out promo schedule but she has blown it. Most of the material is really poor.

Posted by: JosephCarey 9th December 2019, 05:22 PM

Camila was always doomed in December, especially if Rita and Clean Bandit couldn't manage top 10 albums at this point last year. If they waited a month I'm confident we'd be seeing better results in terms of peak position, god knows why they didn't release in Jan.

Posted by: Bjork 9th December 2019, 05:28 PM

We can see which artists do well with a Q4 release and it's Ball & Boe, Rod Stewart, Robbie, Westlife... not artists that cater to younger audiences

I personally thought that launching the album after Senorita and Liar was good enough but maybe in October or next February, buy not in December

Camila's label should have known better for sure.. but they're the ones that pushed Sangria Wine instead of She Loves Control

It's not just ACR but all the changes to streaming ratios over the last few years that mean we can't compare like with like anymore (e.g. if the ratio had been 150:1 or there had been a free/paid split in 2016, One Dance would have had a much shorter run at #1).

Camila is an artist who does good on streaming sites though so after Xmas is over and we move into January I do feel that the album will have staying power of sorts.

I can’t see this album being saved, the whole era has been a tumbleweed and all the material hasn't had a favourable response.

It's a shame really, when her first album was released I thought she was in a position to make a big name for herself but they dropped the ball for the rest of the campaign and now this.

The Monday sales didn't get posted on here last week but Joseph did have them behind the scenes, I asked him about it earlier and Tones is down about 300 units from last week's Monday update. Which tbh is kind of uncomfortably close to 'she might avoid ACR again' territory.

If she avoids it Ladbaby will still beat her. The aim is to make twice as much money for poor families as they did last year.

seriously I cannot see the connection
there is no correlation at all between iTunes and Apple Music

If the song is pulling huge numbers at Amazon Music on its own merit, don't you think that non-Amazon Music users who aren't looking to subscribe would buy the song on Amazon?

And as someone said, if 'songs at the top of Amazon's sales chart are selling 5 copies', then why wouldn't she be able to do well there and hit #1? You mean to tell me she gets enough streams from Amazon Music alone to outdo nearly everyone's Spotify + Apple Music + Amazon Music streams combined, but she can't even sell 5 copies on their Amazon store?

I easily expected Camila Cabello to be ahead of him.
That said, interesting to see how Liam's sales perform as the week progresses.

The Who Album would have been only their 2nd No.1 in the UK. They've had 14 Top 10 Singles,
and only 2 got as high as No.2. Their current Album is their 16th Top 10 Album and it looks like
it will be their 5th to Peak at No.2. Their only UK No.1 Album is 'Who's Next', which spent 1 Week
on top, on W/E 18th September 1971. I make many Lists, based on UK No.1 Singles and Albums,
and The Who are the biggest Act not to feature in any of them. 1 week at No.1 is not enough to
get them in any of my Lists. It is a shame, as they made many great Singles, such as 'Substitute',
'My Generation' and 'I'm A Boy'...

I already replied to you, the people that buy mp3s and the people that stream are different people, we see it every week at Apple vs iTunes, the Celebrity XF song was #1 on iTunes selling 3 times more than everybody else but #700 on Apple Music

Posted by: dancember 9th December 2019, 10:01 PM

Clearly 'River' is only being promoted to Amazon Music subscribers anyway. You are more likely to know of its existence if you use the service and they're pushing it to you.
Not really surprising that she's not doing many downloads especially on Amazon where there's barely any download market.

All it needs is to register a decline in streaming equivalent sales (SES) compared to last week*, which was 68,303. So it looks more than likely, I'd put it at 70-80% likely.

Yes, they're not comparable. Dua Lipa literally had segments dedicated to her on the 6 O'Clock News on BBC One, broadcast to the entire country, when hardly anybody even knew who she was.

That's called promotion - literally every single act does it who can get a slot. Whereas Ellie, an established artist, is number one on an Amazon playlist where you ask Alexa to play Christmas music, she is the first track. Literally not even close.

I think it's more to do with Amazon heavily supporting it cos it's an exclusive and being in all imaginable playlists, #1 in many of them, including the Xmas ones

I think the situation with Ellie and Amazon is not that different from that Brenda Lee song and Spotify
that's a song that during the download era nobody bought even when lots of Xmas classics were coming back every year
and now it's charting 100% due to Spotify playlists

The same applied to Cheerleader and Lush Life though? They were on an absurd amount of Spotify playlists (for no reason, I suspect someone paid a lot of money for it, or maybe a high level Spotify employee stanned the songs and decided to sneak them into as many playlists as they could), and it's pretty obvious they caught on initially because people were accidentally hearing them due to autoplay, rather than actually choosing to listen to them. Isn't this similar to what's happening with Ellie Goulding's song?

In the case of Lean On, whilst it was also on an absurd amount of Spotify playlists, which wasn't reasonably justifiable, at least Diplo and DJ Snake were famous beforehand, so I can understand people being interested to hear a collab between them, but the extent on the playlisting, as if it was a new Ed Sheeran or Justin Bieber song, was still suspicious.

Maybe this Ellie Goulding song will catch on and become a genuine hit and still be charting in the top 10 in March, and then you'll mention the suspicious Amazon behaviour surrounding this song to someone in 2024 and some guy will insist that you were just imagining it, but you'll know that wasn't the whole story.

The fact of the matter is, the first 1,000,000 people in the UK to ever hear Cheerleader, 90% of them heard it through Spotify (and the other 10% probably heard it via someone who heard it on Spotify), and had it not been on all those playlists (which it appeared on for no apparent reason), it might still be a relatively unknown song today. It's not like the song got popular from Vine or Tik Tok, or from festivals, or from underground raves, it was from Spotify playlists.

When I ask Alexa to play Christmas music, I don’t get Ellie. In fact I’ve never heard the song since I don’t have amazon music.
Now I ask Alexa to play Xmas music via Spotify but the odd occasion I forget to mention Spotify she doesn’t play Ellie.

I think the situation with Ellie and Amazon is not that different from that Brenda Lee song and Spotify
that's a song that during the download era nobody bought even when lots of Xmas classics were coming back every year
and now it's charting 100% due to Spotify playlists

it re-entered the top 100 in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 before streaming counted.
clearly it's got more popular after streaming thanks in part to Spotify playlisting but it wasn't exactly an obscure song beforehand.

She was obviously higher on Monday because more people streamed her at the weekend, but not so much on a Monday

Tuesday Top 40 Update
Missing Data: Apple, Spotify, YouTube (Monday)

...makes me think the other updates had an extra day of Amazon too. Would explain why the Amazon exclusives are slipping down as their data becomes less dominant.

Posted by: FelizNavidad 10th December 2019, 07:01 PM

As for Mariah slipping to #6, she did 524k on Spotify on Sunday, but divide that by 2 and that's less than the 288k Lewis did.

Posted by: lewis🎄green 10th December 2019, 07:26 PM

Ok so I’ve gradually made the move over to Amazon Music this week and when I ask Alexa to play any sort of Christmas music or playlist I have not had Ellie first at all? She’s only #1 on Christmas Present and you need to specifically state that playlist in order to get her which I doubt everyone is doing. Y’all just need to appreciate that something refreshing from the streaming era has happened with Amazon’s exclusives

But Cheerleader was huge on iTunes back when Spotify didn't dominate the chart the way it does now which renders your point pretty invalid? It was also a big hit elsewhere in the world e.g. Australia so it wasn't like it was some obscure album track nobody had ever heard of.

You lot on here every week talking about what number you want songs to be at makes no sense to me. The charts are pure fiction and made up. Just look at ACR, ratios, streaming, free/paid for, forced playlists. Back in the day, you knew where you stood. A sale is a sale. Do any of you actually take it seriously?

It's still the official chart and there's no harm in wanting to see your favourite artists do well in it. A top 10 single is still prestigious (which is why I'm not gonna be happy when Harry inevitably doesn't go higher than #11 this week, album release to boost it next week please x)

Wow Rod taking the number 1 spot, wish aul Robbie could manage it again for a second week before next weeks big NEs. Thought his TV show would have guaranteed this. Sales of 40k or just over for the top 3 aint great really in the second week of December.

Where is Christmas by Michael Buble?

Looks like if Tones goes onto ACR Stormzy will have the biggest sales if the current songs, Ellie already 5k behind him this week although she could be mid week no1 pending how many Ladbaby and any other surprise sells.

Lewis SYL doing well to be top 40 still with the xmas songs but it'll inevitably fall out for 1 week in the week after xmas which is annoying as its nearly 1 year in the top 40 now.

So you'd prefer a fake chart

Posted by: Bjork 11th December 2019, 08:53 PM

no I want a chart that reflects how people are consuming music, charts have to evolve and adapt, when a format becomes obsolete, we have to say goodbye and embrace the new format, what do you want a chart based on a format 5 people still use?
I don't like playlists either and I would change 99% of the chart rules but streaming has to be in the charts cos thats how 99% of the people consume music now

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 11th December 2019, 10:00 PM

The playlists are annoying and def effect what people listen to passively but it is similar to the new releases being at the fore front of record stores and the iTunes Store.

Liam, Rita Ora, Clean Bandit, Camilla etc they need to start realising that Nov/Dec is pretty much reserved for heritage acts and those who appeal to older people now. The industry has changed and so has TV, channels know that older people tend to be the ones who watch TV live now so the booked guests reflect that more too.

Pretty sure they will do something next week too - the current deal ends at 11:59 tonight.

Robbie is THIRSTY AF for the #1 - he’s just added a new bundle to his store: Signed deluxe CD, Signed Christmas card, 3 x Cassettes and Robbie socks for £24.

Tbf to him and the label his sale will drop dead by Dec 26th so they might as well make the most of it now.

Socks! It’s fan exploitation.

Liam was selling handbags.

Camila released 4 new album covers.

Mariah is selling a signed CD (which comes with an instant digital download, of course) that doesn’t ship for 4 months.

Hi can someone please tell me the difference in ratio of streams for one sale when on ACR or not on ACR. Someone on my Facebook wants to know, Ta.

Posted by: dancember 12th December 2019, 04:25 PM

QUOTE(danG @ Jun 24 2018, 08:43 PM) *
What is ACR and when does it happen?
To help freshen the chart the OCC introduced the 'accelerated chart ratio' (ACR). This affects the ratio at which its streams are converted into sales. After a song has been in the chart for at least nine weeks, and has been in decline for three weeks in a row, its streaming points are effectively cut in half (its premium ratio will decrease from 1:100 to 1:200, and its ad-funded ratio likewise from 1:600 to 1:1200). A song can therefore be on ACR as early as week ten (though any song older than 3 years is automatically on ACR permanently, regardless of how long it has spent in the chart). A song not on ACR is considered to be on SCR ('standard chart ratio'). This rule has been in place since W/E 13/07/17.

[*NEW*] When ACR was first introduced 'decline' was defined as "negative week on week variance of combined sales and streams AND negative variance lower than the market rate of change week on week". However, from W/E 10/01/19 a new rule was introduced where 'decline' is now defined as "negative week on week variance of streams AND negative variance lower than the market streaming rate of change week on week". This means download sales will no longer be a factor in whether a song can 'avoid' ACR, and only streaming data will determine when ACR kicks in for any track.

I think he pushed the wrong lead track. IMO Time For Change isn't that strong but that's the one Radio 2, Magic, Heart etc are mostly playing. Bad Sharon, Rudolph and Let's Go Shopping are stronger better tracks.

I see their ITV special is Friday 20th so they may get top 5 for Christmas.

That will only boost them potentially on the chart after Xmas.

Posted by: Zak 12th December 2019, 07:54 PM

Camila doing the same strategy as Gaga last year (which got her the #1) by flogging signed CDs mid-week. Hopefully that can push her top 15 🥴.

The fact it's not top 10 is still embarrassing though.

Robbie told a few days ago that he has 7 songs Xmas more in his bag and want to safe them for a while. He's thinking to back with them in 1 year with possible tour next November-December.
But Robbie very often changes his mind and plans so we will see.

Anyway, Number 1 in UK, Australia, Austria and Switzerland by the moment is a good start for this album.

How are Xmas songs doing in comparison to this time last year? I noticed they are doing quite a bit better in the US this year due to low sales over there
