BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dua Lipa _ Illusion • Third Single

Posted by: Juan Carlos 26th March 2024, 07:14 PM

Revealed by a reliable source that Dua has a new song coming out in two weeks, which is the closest to Future Nostalgia by their opinion so far.

Posted by: Addy! 26th March 2024, 08:28 PM

Isn’t Taylor releasing around that date as well?!

Posted by: Juan Carlos 26th March 2024, 08:41 PM

Taylor is releasing The Tortured Poets Department, her tenth album, on April 19. The lead single should be out before (possibly, a week) that date, unless she drops everything at once.

Exactly, week before 19th is 12th, same date as Dua’s third single, no?!

That's true.

However, it's still unknown whether Taylor is going to drop something a week before (even earlier?) her album or not.

Posted by: Scene 26th March 2024, 10:10 PM

Training Season is over quickly then. Correct decision though as I'm bored of TS already.

Is the new single most like the album FN or the song FN?

Posted by: Jessie Where 26th March 2024, 11:00 PM

I think getting 3 tracks out pre-album release is a good strategy in terms of the album's longevity!

Posted by: Jessie Where 28th March 2024, 05:24 PM

While we wait for news on this, let's have some fun and try to guess which title is the 3rd single.

End of An Era
These Walls
Whatcha Doing
French Exit
Illusion
Falling Forever
Anything For Love
Maria
Happy For You

I'm going for 'Whatcha Doing'

Posted by: k👠th 28th March 2024, 05:55 PM

Dua's talked about 'Illusion' in a couple of interviews so I'm leaning towards that thinking.gif

Posted by: Scene 28th March 2024, 06:39 PM

I’m thinking Illusion or French Exit

Posted by: Y'all Starlight 28th March 2024, 09:50 PM

Either 'Illusion', 'Falling Forever' or 'Anything For Love' methinks

Posted by: Addy! 28th March 2024, 11:34 PM

French Exit…sounds like it’s dedicated to her ex-French bf lol

We have a short wait to hear it.

Posted by: Sour Candy 2nd April 2024, 06:47 AM

Intrigued to hear this, but cannot help thinking that the whole album project has just taken far too long to become an event on its own. She'll have the streams there to back it yes, but after being out for so long Houdini and Training Season (and perhaps this) will not make a magical climb on charts when the album is finally released. I guess they aim at Joel Corry type of longevity on album chart.

Correct! As long as shw reinvents her sound fpr the next album, she should recover ffom one era like this

Don’t know what to make out of that…sounds the closest to FN indeed but the progress seems to be going backwards rather than forward.

Houdini seems to be remaining that cool girl of the album so far!!!

This! FN had such a clear concept and the music, artwork, videos etc all fit… this definitely feels like a half-baked idea…

I’ll give Illusion a listen shortly. So far it’s Houdini >>>>> TS

Posted by: Juranamo 5th April 2024, 07:44 AM

This feels very diet-Hallucinate from that clip...

I have nothing against a FN sounding song or two, if they sound like they're at home in this album too, but they need to be of FN quality. An evolving sound doesn't need to be a full 180, afterall (it can be taking what you have, and enhancing/adapting it).

Not loving the clip, but Training Season didn't smash me to the ground until I heard it in full either (and that's been on almost repeat since release 😂). We'll see!

Yeah, this is fantastic. Best video of the era so far also

Posted by: Envoirment 11th April 2024, 10:16 PM

Another bop and the best music video so far. Should be another easy hit for Dua!

Posted by: Botchia 11th April 2024, 10:33 PM

It's easily the weakest of the three singles for me and doesn't touch Houdini or even Training Season. At least she delivered a big music video though.

Posted by: Davidson 11th April 2024, 10:39 PM

This is by far my fav of the whole era so far.

The video sells it but the song is just huge?? It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it is just joyous and unadulterated fun pop. Also the fact that the whole song and video are so Kylie coded. She really is Kylie’s musical daughter.

Posted by: Jessie Where 11th April 2024, 10:40 PM

Posted by: Frenchie 11th April 2024, 10:45 PM

Posted by: conorw 11th April 2024, 11:12 PM

such a bopppp! i think i still like houdini more, but this is sooo much beter than training season!

Posted by: Notorious D.O.T 12th April 2024, 01:51 AM

Hmm on first listen it's about on par with Training Season which is to say quite a bit behind Houdini tbh.

That's not to say it isn't a decent little bop, she rarely delivers a hard miss but it's not giving me much more than that.

Posted by: A Good Melody 12th April 2024, 02:24 AM

It’s okay. I prefer it over Training Season, but I don’t like it more than Houdini. I’m still excited for the album!

Posted by: k👠th 12th April 2024, 04:29 AM

The song is a solid 9/10. What stood out for me the most was the memorable, polished chorus. The "Ill-oooh-oooh-ooooh-sion" hook has been stuck in my head since the snippets were shared.

There's a couple of interesting quirks here and there: the random 2-chord guitar bit after the first chorus, the falsetto first pre-chorus, the uncommon chorus chord progression, the instrumental breakdown in the bridge *.* (I'm guessing that's where the Kazakhstan artist's sample features)

I do wish the high whistle-like notes and instrumental breakdown were more fleshed out. The transition from the verses to the chorus isn't the smoothest. I'm not too crazy about the pitched "dance all night" bits.

Video is easily the best of the era. Stunning setup, especially when Dua's in the pool wub.gif She looked so fierce. The aerobics-like choreo is a bit cringe but hopefully that's something the TikTokers can latch onto

Track 1 on Today's Top Hits and Dua is on the cover wub.gif

It's been released alongside an extended mix, a capella and instrumental:

Posted by: Sour Candy 12th April 2024, 04:59 AM

Honestly, it's giving Hallucinate Part 2 - pretty weird song to do a follow up to, considering it's not among her top 20 most popular hits.

Posted by: Jordanlee 12th April 2024, 05:09 AM

I definitely get Kylie vibes from this not just the video what’s kind of All the Lovers meets Slow but in general this is Kylie coded.

The song itself is kind of not necessarily bad but album track esque. This could’ve easily been on Future Nostalgia I don’t think this is necessarily a giant departure from that era.

It's such a high bar though, FN is probably the best album of the decade for me or certainly in the top three.

All of these are 9/10 songs for me for sure, but FN was throwing out constant classic after classic 10/10 singles.

Illusion is like some of those turn of the century French house hits but given a full superstar pop makeover, it's sublime.

Which is why she should've done something completely different and distance herself from FN, but it seems to go to the opposite direction.... after all the Britpop theme/influence hype we are at "Hallucinate Part 2" and "Kylie coded".

Was it Dua herself who said it would be Britpop influenced or people who had heard what she was working on? I can't help but think it might have been misinterpreted from 'British pop' of that era, as I can't really imagine Dua going full Oasis.

I feel like Love Again was already a bit like Dua doing 90s British pop, as it was like Your Woman (due to the same sample) crossed with something Jamiroquai might release. And Illusion also sounds like it could have feasibly been a late 90s British pop song, but not Britpop.

I think elements of the production do show progression or at least a sidestep from Hallucinate, it feels more house driven. I still think Houdini is a definite sonic progression too, so I guess we can see what the rest of the album sounds like.

Posted by: Jessie Where 12th April 2024, 09:46 AM

I get real 'Get Outta My Way' vibes from this, it has a similar frenetic energy.

Posted by: Sour Candy 12th April 2024, 09:51 AM

I agree, Houdini was a great introductory single, as it was different, but not a 180 degree turn.

Posted by: k👠th 12th April 2024, 10:00 AM

Dua never said it will sound Britpop inspired. The media just took the word and ran with it

QUOTE
of course, it’s a pop record. I’m a pop artist, that’s what I do. But I think overall, the different sounds that are being used, the different breaks in the music, the use of musical samples, whether that’s with Kevin’s voice or with the different instruments that we used, overall it was me going completely out of what I knew, and exploring something different. And that’s what I got from my inspiration. I wasn’t going into Britpop and being like, I’m making this record that sounds exactly like… Because it doesn’t. But it’s a feeling that they portray that when I hear “Teardrop” by Massive Attack and I’m like, how did this song even come to be? It feels like it just happened in a moment of real freedom and writing and emotion, and I think that was just the feeling I was trying to convey more than anything.

I think the music and this era has been created with intention of establishing her as a live act, the use of instruments in every song that sound even better in a live setting (see the London Sessions performances)

'Training Season' is my favourite of the three too!

The video for this is quite obviously a massive step up though heart.gif

Posted by: RobBot 12th April 2024, 06:49 PM

On first listen, I thought it lacked a bit of oomph. The way people compared it to Hallucinate, I understood, but it needed the THUMP that the chorus for Hallucinate smashes in with.

However, even just by like the third listen, this washes over you with such a slick, summery glow and feels like it’s going to have longevity for that reason. It doesn’t hit you over the head but there’s lots of fun elements to unpack in every listen that makes this feel complete and emphatic in its own right.

3/3 for me - not going to pretend it’s up there with Future Nostalgia’s releases but I never expect Katy Perry to ever meet Teenage Dream heights again. I’m happy enough with Dua’s path and her consistency to pop.

Posted by: Addy! 12th April 2024, 06:54 PM

Illusion did 346k (main version) from few hours being available on Spotify...it's up from Training Season which did about 230k I believe.

Hopefully another Top 10 debut in WW Spotify charts tomorrow <3

Posted by: Ansel 12th April 2024, 07:28 PM

I agree this really creeps up on you, I thought it was just okay on first listen but now the chorus is stuck in my head! It does feel very Hallucinate but the little production flourishes like the breakdown near the end give it its own identity too. The video is gorgeous too, very 00s Kylie (the Slow and All The Lovers references!) and the shot of her at the end with the Sagrada Familia behind is a serve and a half.

Echoing the Training Season love, it's on equal footing with Houdini for me! I mostly use the extended versions for both of them whereas I prefer the regular edit for Illusion as it feels a bit more energetic.

Ugh US is really letting her down this time

Posted by: Jαsє 15th April 2024, 08:07 PM

Oh I find this a total non-event sad.gif Loved the first two singles. Hopefully it grows?

Posted by: Roba. 15th April 2024, 09:08 PM

Only given this one listen so far and not quite hitting. Hope it connects a bit more.

Posted by: pippa 15th April 2024, 11:34 PM

Illusion is one of those will take time songs.

Should be safe for UK top 10 debut I hope?

Should be safe for UK top 10 debut I hope?

Might be close. It'll need 25k+ to debut top 10. "Training Season" did 26,098 first week and this seems to be doing similarly? The youtube video is holding up better than "Training Season" as well.

Although Sabrina & Perrie will also likely be top 10.

8, 9 & 10 did 29,213, 25,415 & 23,745 last week. Sabrina will definintely do 30k+ and Perrie will likely do 25k+ with physicals included. So Dua may need to do close to 30k to gaurentee top 10 this week. #8 29,213 sales is from Dasha's "Austin" which will likely increase in sales this week based on new streaming peaks.

Shame Dua doesn't have any physicals this week, but to be fair a top 15 debut will be good as I'm sure the song will stabilise and get an album boost into the top 10 release week like "Physical" did. Hopefully they'll release CDs for the song as well to help boost it, perhaps into the top 5 album release week?

Posted by: Addy! 16th April 2024, 09:20 PM

Yeah, I think it will debut #11 this week but it'll probably jump to #7-#8 territory on album release week!!!

Posted by: pippa 16th April 2024, 11:33 PM

It will be very borderline for Illusion to make a Top 10 debut.

Posted by: Jessie Where 17th April 2024, 12:10 AM

I can't honestly, realistically see it missing!

*watches it miss the top 10 on Friday*

Posted by: Long Dong Silver 17th April 2024, 12:21 AM

This needs to peak at #7. Then she'll have allthe top 10 positions ever!!

Posted by: k👠th 17th April 2024, 04:16 AM

Dua also mentions that the music video was shot in 2 hours

Posted by: Sour Candy 17th April 2024, 05:38 AM

ouch

Don't know if their goal is to succeed in the US though, but releasing this many singles in such a short time period doesn't help.

Posted by: k👠th 17th April 2024, 06:03 AM

It's gaining audience quite fast on US radio so hopefully that will help it climb

Posted by: dandy* 17th April 2024, 12:48 PM

This has started to grow on me a bit now... it's still my least fave of the 3 so far but it's definitely a solid enough addition to her run of singles

Illusions debuts at No.9 (26,974 sales), becoming Dua Lipa’s 16th Top 10 and 28th Top 75 entry. Her fourth straight Top 10 hit, it is the third from upcoming third album, Radical Optimism.

I'm glad it got top 10 but I wish it had been higher, what's the deal with no physicals? Unless they're saving them for album release week?

Posted by: Envoirment 19th April 2024, 09:56 PM

Great debut! cheer.gif Hopefully it'll rise to a new peak album release week. Perhaps top 5? *_*

I think the focus is album physicals and pre-orders at this point. It's a shame bc it's an easy extra 8-10k sales for Illusion (which would have been enough for Dua to peak at the elusive #7 position this week instead of #9) and the fans are crying for a vinyl on X.

If this was getting a physical release, I'm sure it would've already been announced. Also not getting my hopes up for a big boost during album release week - it's only number 7 in the album track listing.

Didn't even get her a unique top ten :/Wait for French Dcit!!!

Posted by: k👠th 22nd April 2024, 05:15 PM

Down to 18 in the midweeks, meanwhile Training Season has gone 15-53 thanks to ACR cry.gif

On a more positive note, Illusion debuted at #43 on the US Hot 100. An improvement on the initial #60 prediction cheer.gif Radio are eating it up! It already has a bigger overall audience than Training Season

Posted by: k👠th 27th April 2024, 05:37 AM

Illusion drops 9-19 in its 2nd week with 20,526 sales. Really competitive week though,

#14 in today's midweeks! Nice to see it on the rebound already cheer.gif

Posted by: Jessie Where 29th April 2024, 08:21 PM

I'd really really love this to somehow get a new peak next week. It feels like a big ask but I badly want it to happen!

Posted by: JulianNial 2nd May 2024, 12:23 AM

I'm still not getting how people aren't seeing that this is her biggest bop since Levitating. I feel like people have been unrealistic with their expectations and in years to come they'll be saying "SH*T! THAT WENT OFF!!".

Can a viral TikTok dance challenge happen for this ASAP

Posted by: Addy! 5th May 2024, 03:43 PM

I’ve just noticed, her music is back on TikTok cheeseblock.png

Posted by: Scene 15th May 2024, 07:32 AM

Back up to #50 in the US. I wonder if it has enough legs to chart higher than it’s original #43 peak next week.

The London Sessions versions of Houdini and Training Season are fantastic as well. I love how these songs sound with a live band. They should release a London Sessions version of the whole album!

I'll give them a listen. I wonder if this is how her Glastonbury set will be.
