Pop perfection. Massive multi-week #1 incoming.
Sounding strong on first (and now second) listen. Earworm of a chorus/post-chorus, the production is kind of like a cool 80s vibe, without sounding like any song in particular. Love the middle eight breakdown and second half generally and the almost Daft Punk-esque outro.
Doesn't feel like it's chasing any trends though and is a natural progression of what's come before. She just gets pop music, I love her <3

This really has not disappointed - it's a smash!! The production is incredible and the second half of the song in particular is a triumph.

This is basically all I've been listening to since it came out.
I was hoping it'd even be 1/20th as good as 'Don't Start Now' as that's an impossible bar to beat, but I'd say this is perhaps even 1/3rd as good!

I'm torn on this... it's definitely not as good as I was expecting but that's okay because her singles from the last era probably put my expectations far higher than was reasonable, it settles as a 7 or 8 for me I think as I do still enjoy it. I like the sound of the version with the extended outro that was teased earlier in this thread though, I hope she does actually release that soon *.*
I think the verses are stronger than the chorus here. I feel it's kind of her Stupid Love chart-wise.
The key missing component is being viral on TikTok. Dua's biggest smashes (Don't Start Now and Levitating) had that. There might be a chance it can still happen and Houdini gets a second wind in the new year but I'm not holding my breath.
#2 peak is still good going. It almost matched DSN's opening week and sold more than what Dance The Night did to get to #1

I think this song will work out really great for her from a critical standpoint. It won't, and isn't, the biggest hit of her career and performance-wise, might feel like a step down from Future Nostalgia. But every review I've seen of this is super strong and gives off this essence that she's more than just a pop artist and I think long term, that will really benefit her as a way of standing apart from her peers.
Songs like this get you the big name festival bookings that might make some pop artists look "uncool" if they were to appear on the same stage. Songs like this give you longevity in the business because you're not just rehashing the same music album after album and hoping for the best. I think this really is a sonically impressive song from Dua that helps to push her as a stronger force for album sales, and not just a cute pop girl.
All that being said, it's still doing well anyway - it's still absolutely a success whichever way you look at it. Not as resounding as we may have hoped for, but a success none the less.

It's not the massive switch-up in sound like she was claiming it would be, but I think it retains an element of what she was doing beforehand and
pushes it forward (like how you can definitely hear Tame Impala's influence in places) and the structure of it is quite unconventional.

Don't Start Now went 30 – 46 in its first 2 weeks so there's still hope for Houdini to bounce back in the new year I guess.
The synths that come in towards the end elevate the song from being very mediocre to a really great piece of work.
I quite like the extended version - I need to listen again, I suspect I'll end up making a middle version myself with the best bits

Played this as a part of dj set (mixed with Heavy Metal Lover btw) and it sounds so good in a club, but it's not everyone's cup of tea type of radio song like Dance the Night..

I'm kinda sad to see this not smashing as I originally thought it was going to and also considering the fact that Dance The Night is still smashing and being talked much more than this including Dua herself (all the nominations it's getting so far plus with Oscars nominees still coming), it seems it's stealing the spotlight from Houdini!!!

The release date was ok - it has been a hit and is still on SCR when the Christmas songs are gone and thus can get a decent chart run. She should get a performance slot at the Grammys and debut a new single there. It'll be fine in the long run for her I think.
January would've been stronger, but it might still go back to top 10 in Jan if she can add promo for it. Dropping it now means she gets to drop single #2 end Jan/early Feb and promo it at the Brits and any other award shows around that time though, so that should stabilise the era unless her team drops the ball.
Houdini will return to the Top 10 in January.
I'm not as convinced.
Low top 10 is possible, but it is currently the 18th most streamed non-Xmas song on Spotify so it'll be tough. It depends on which songs return to SCR after Xmas.
