Oops I just realised 'Shut Up (And Sleep With Me)' was already sent to the first Pride spinoff so should probably get that replaced
(I even looked at the list already - albeit quite briefly - and somehow didn't notice it then but it suddenly clicked upon seeing the actual thread, my bad for failing at my limited oversight)
I'm pretty certain the rest of the list is still fine. x
Oops sorry for the oversight as well. Notified the participant!
The Torres song was sent to Nuggets this year I think? Excited to dive in
Recycles from contests outside of this forum are fine!
I already know and stan Jadakissnia and Terra Avium's entries so I sense a likely predictable top 2 in my votes but then I thought that about the last main contest as well and there ended up being even better discoveries so we'll see
Also lol at MNEK having appeared in all three of the Pride spinoffs (he was almost not in this one but then Jafet reconfirmed pretty last minute). Only gay artist confirmed.
Oh I love I'll Call You Mine, was a BJSC potential of mine for a while. Altyr's, Jade's and Hendinia's are also all good!
I should give a disclaimer to mine, as it's in German...so Sarah Connor wrote it after hearing from a mother that her teenage son had come out as gay. Vincent is a fictional representation based on the teenager. This was No.2 in my EOY 2019 chart, I had heard it a few times and liked it but really got into it when it was all over the radio when I was in Austria later that year, Legend Sarah sounds so powerful on the track <3 Apparently the song was censored or banned by some radio stations due to the 'sexual' content in the opening lyrics
Thought I’d introduce more people to a stunning Italian album track away from their hits.
I recognise names but not many actual songs!
From the list I could recognise Flynnonda, Jadakissnia, Taahino, Pestolia, Lotunia, Cor Lupus and Hendinia, so basically a contest of familiar songs. Metteson is an amazing artist too but I couldn't recall "Come, Cry" for some odd reason.
I completely forgot Torres had been in Nuggets, soz. I did vote for it (just looked up) but not highly. I think I came across it again on another playlist & thought it was a new discovery! Struck me stronger 2nd time around. X
Interestingly though Addy did not vote for 'Shut Up (And Sleep With Me)' in the first Pride
So, about Minute Taker... (taken from his own website):
"British singer-songwriter/producer Ben McGarvey, known as Minute Taker, makes what NOTION describes as "beautiful electronic-orientated pop songs" with "haunting melodies, electronic beats & soulful singing" (TIME OUT).
From his small home studio on the Pennine moors, surrounded by synthesisers, gadgets and pets, he crafts his emotive, nostalgic songs.
Along with releasing 3 acclaimed albums, several EPs & official remixes for Yazoo & Erasure, Minute Taker has gained a reputation for his inventive cover versions of classic songs by some of his favourite artists including Kate Bush, Eurythmics, Madonna, Tori Amos & Pet Shop Boys. Many of these were recorded exclusively for Secret Songs, a series of homemade albums available for fans via subscription. Find out more about Secret Songs here.
Minute Taker's new 80s-inspired synth-pop album Wolf Hours includes the singles "The Darkest Summer", "Lead You Home" and "After The Rain" (featuring Bright Light Bright Light) which has received airplay on BBC Radio 2."
I chose Lead you Home for this spin-off Pride contest, as the video shows us a gay love story stretching between the 1980s and the 1910s: “The video explores the dreams of a former World War 1 solider as he lies on his deathbed over 60 years later. He goes back to relive a relationship he once had with a fellow soldier that ended in tragedy”.
If you all enjoy it - do check out Ben's discography!
went with something more vibe-y rather than dance-y! "I'll Call You Mine" might be my favorite from girl in red to date
I only discovered Kae Tempest this year, but their wonderful spoken-word style and poetry was really standout. No Prizes was my original choice, but I figured this one would be more of a discovery to some, the intense production and delivery reminds me of The Streets' first album <3
I chose Cisgender because the theme is quite novel to me. I don't recall a lot of the songs exploring the topic of non-binary struggles and I think this song encapsulated them really well. Hence, I saved this song up for this occasion. Shamir has a really special countertenor voice which may be grating for some, but he excels with the emotions.
Quite a lot of artists I recognise but only a couple of songs, so there should be some good discoveries here! One of the songs I know could easily be my 12-pointer atm but I'd be happy to be surprised by something else.
I chose Str8 Acting because it sounds pretty cool and is a bit of a banger - plus just before confirming it I discovered that it actually samples background noises from one of the clubs on my street! So that felt like a good omen, hopefully people enjoy it.
Issue resolved! Tom Aspaul - Let Them (It's All Love) will be the replacement and I have updated the playlists. Will upload a revised recap shortly!
EDIT: Recap updated!
Great effort with the recap video
Such a shame I missed this as I have the PERFECT artist to enter into something like this. I guess BJSC 146 will be seeing them instead
Great to see Kae Tempest included, have been a great fan of their work for some time!
Also love to see Elliot Brett (Lynks), Honey Dijon, TORRES and in particular Shamir here. <3
I had been thinking about sending “On My Own”, but “Cisgender” is a good choice too.
For this spin-off I chose Tama Gucci (aka Kymani Floyd) and X-Coast's (Bojan Cizmic) collab. “I LET YOU”. Tama Gucci is an up-and-coming artist from Miami's queer underground scene, and X-Coast grew up in the war-torn Novi Sad (Serbia) but was inspired to produce music by the energy of early rave, gabber, and later on jungle - encapsulated in the 1990s by the Prodigy. Shaped by and created for the community cultivated by the Internet Friends collective in Florida, “I LET YOU” is a fun and catchy banger that serves as a celebration for Pride. “Raving is a form of therapy, a necessity for some people... It's an escape, it's a fantasy world —”. This was the community that first gave Kymani the chance to perform, and I thought it would be good to send an upbeat celebratory track for this Spin-Off, which juxtaposes thumping bass and acid house influenced production against the turbulent, vulnerable and emotionally charged lyricism dealing with the malaise over a controlling relationship.
omg this edition
big hype to Doctor Blind, Taahino, Lookylion etc etc...lots of good stuff.
As of my entry, I don't know if UK ever embraced boy band No Mercy in 90's but Tom Aspaul song is definitely inspired by No Mercy 'Where Do You Go'
