Yesterday, Apple hosted it's very first event from the newly completed Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, USA.

There, various products and features were shown, and this is what has been revealed. Click on links to see more information from Apple's website.

The new design looks very Samsung (who incidentally already have the face recognition technology - which is a total gimmick of course!)

Posted by: lewistgreen 13th September 2017, 09:27 PM

I have the Galaxy S8. Watching this yesterday I was like, yeah Samsung have done all this already laugh.gif

Posted by: ⓐⓦⓐⓡ^ 13th September 2017, 09:32 PM

That epic fail at not being able to access his phone on stage! laugh.gif

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 13th September 2017, 10:53 PM

The X does look very fancy. Love how pretty much the whole face is a screen and they aren’t making the phone less portable for it. Not sure about the notch at the top when in landscape but apparently they will only fill the screen up to where it starts so there’s not a block covering up the screen laugh.gif the VR and animoji things look pretty fun once in a while I guess but I’m not fussed on the face ID thing, in fact I’d rather have it disables lmao. Not sure how many others would agree but I’m all for getting rid of the Home button tongue.gif especially if it means more screen as already mentioned.

But I’ll keep hold of my 6S for a while yet as it’s already pretty decent for current smart phones today and I could do without spending more money needlessly :’) it’ll probably be my next upgrade when the 12 or whatever it’ll be called is new and the X is going cheap tongue.gif

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 13th September 2017, 11:04 PM

The iOS 11 is pretty neat though, looks sleeker on the lock screen and the customisation of the control center is sic and the music/video player that opens in a web browser has been upgraded to my favour cheer.gif it seems to support GIFs in Photos now which I didn’t know they only just enabled laugh.gif

Posted by: troublepink 14th September 2017, 01:07 PM

I was considering upgrading my handset from iPhone 6 to the 7 when the new phones were announced but I think i may get the 8 instead. On the Apple website it says the 7 has 32 or 128gb. The 32gb won't be enough as I currently have 64gb and the 128gb is more than I want to pay. The iPhone 8 however has 64gb for not much more per month, so I'm going to go for that biggrin.gif
I've got a good deal on a vodafone contract thanks to my sister wub.gif so I only need to buy the handset

The X looks really nice and I wish I could afford that, maybe on my next upgrade when it might be cheaper laugh.gif

Posted by: danG 14th September 2017, 01:10 PM

I won't be upgrading. My iPhone 5 is still good enough as it is, the larger screen, Face ID and animated emojis do not justify the thousand pound price tag.

Posted by: Emily Haines 14th September 2017, 01:21 PM

I'd like an X but I have a perfectly good 6S that I can easily get another year out of. May upgrade to an 8S or whatever is out at that time in a year.

They explained away the Face ID not working easily enough though. Other staff had been handling the phone prior to going on stage and so it was scanning for a specific face. After a while it will revert to passcode if it doesn't recognise your face.

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 14th September 2017, 02:09 PM

I know the face ID thing is still buggy but if that gets sorted out will it not unlock if you hold a (decent quality) picture to the camera? ohmy.gif unless the camera update is really as good as they say tongue.gif

Posted by: Liаm 14th September 2017, 02:12 PM

The prices are getting ridiculous, I would not pay nearly £1000 for a phone laugh.gif I have a OnePlus which is under half that price and performs as well as an iphone 6 or even 7 in some cases, ofc this will be another level but it's nothing I'd pay £600 more for.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 14th September 2017, 06:25 PM

I'm not planning on upgrading any time soon. Not when I've just shelled out £770 for an iPad Pro. No way I pay more for a phone

Posted by: burbe 14th September 2017, 07:24 PM

£1000 is extortionate!!

Posted by: Chez Wombat 14th September 2017, 08:24 PM

For once, I don't need to worry about how out of date my phone is as I got a 6s last year, still works fine and is wonderful so I have no use for this. The X looks pretty unnecessary anyway.

Posted by: ⓐⓦⓐⓡ^ 14th September 2017, 08:33 PM

There was a feature I was hoping they would reveal but didn't. I wanted Apple to introduce Duel-Sim capabilities allowing someone to make and receive calls from 2 different numbers so that I could keep my personal number and business number on the same device rather than carrying two phones on me. Not this time though. mad.gif

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 14th September 2017, 08:41 PM

I'm still forever waiting for the feature that lets you play videos across the iOS e.g. how a Youtube video can be put in the corner within its app; it would be real neat if videos (from any app) could do the same when browsing other apps or the home screen *.*

My iPad does that!

I know it's never coming back but I'm not upgrading further than the 6s until they allow the charging of the phone whilst listening through headphones without having to pay extra for an adaptor.

Posted by: Brébino 14th September 2017, 10:58 PM

I'm gonna hold out on upgrading from my 6 for as long as that's feasible for the same reason. I still don't get how removing the headphone jack was supposed to be a good idea.

I see the iPhone X is removing the home button as well - I swear they're just trying to make the phone more and more awkward and restrictive every generation now. :/

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 14th September 2017, 11:02 PM

Totally forgot about the removal of the headphone jack laugh.gif why didn’t they remove the lightning instead and have it work like the 3rd gen iPod shuffle? magic.gif still means you can only do one thing at a time but you aren’t messing around with adapters.

Posted by: Jade 14th September 2017, 11:07 PM

Yeah I'm another one who has been put off by the recent changes. I currently own an iPhone 5S and have no intention of upgrading for the foreseeable future.

(plus that price is ridiculous and not one I could justify with a perfectly working phone)

Posted by: Andrew. 14th September 2017, 11:14 PM

These prices are way too high for me to even consider at the moment lmaooo, I'm perfectly happy with my 7 (minus the headphone jack obviously, why was that ever thought of as a good idea mellow.gif and I kinda have to be happy because with my budget I won't be affording new phones anytime soon ;o)

Omg I saw that, yeah it's hardly like anyone was crying out for the home button to go laugh.gif

I've not been put off by the changes, I personally just can't justify the expenditure right now. It was new iPhone or a new iPad and the iPad won out as it looks like I might be travelling a lil more for work potentially.

When I get my promotion I'll be all over the 2018 iPhones.

The 8 & X both wirelessly charge so you can use the lightning port for headphones.

Plus our new start at work ordered the 7+ as their work phone and got the EarPods with them. So maybe the new iPhones will ship with them too?

As far as I've seen they don't come with a wireless charger so it's still something that needs to be paid extra for, which when you're already paying £1000 for a phone is just a kick in the teeth.

If they come with the wireless headphones that's not so bad but from the "in the box" list I've seen the 8 and X just seem to have the basic things (wired headphones, USB charger etc).

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 15th September 2017, 06:55 AM

That's poor show. I'd have expected it to ship with more than a couple of cables at that price. Especially given that the FX rate used by Apple is $1=£1 and like 50% of the price is profit.

Posted by: Oliver 15th September 2017, 07:02 AM

iPhone with iOS 11
EarPods with Lightning Connector
Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter
Lightning to USB Cable
USB Power Adapter
Documentation

The exact same "in the box" for both new phones (apart from the OBVIOUS difference laugh.gif).

She might have done if it's a work phone, I think Apple do deals if workplaces order in bulk?

Posted by: ⓐⓦⓐⓡ^ 19th September 2017, 02:55 PM

Apple users be warned that before you upgrade to iOS 11 today, you may lose the ability to use some of your apps which haven't been updated to be compatible with the new OS. I think the update is due to be available for download later today.

Just make sure you check if you can use some of your favourite apps before you update your software as there's no going back to iOS 10 after that. huh.gif

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 19th September 2017, 05:48 PM

The only app that won't work with 11 for me is CloudScrob (which also happens to be one of the rare apps I paid for lol, yes gift cards count) not that I really scrob any more although I think last.fm still updates when I sync my iTunes/iPhone plays.

Posted by: dandy* 19th September 2017, 06:37 PM

I really want to get an iPhone X but it is substantially more than I was expecting it to be and I'd probably want the 256 version if I was going to bother.

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 19th September 2017, 06:46 PM

Deciding to get the i8 (because Apple stuff is already overpriced and the X takes the piss, also there's no gold X) but I'll give it a few months or so when they might get a slight reduction, I usually go for refurbished models but I feel like treating myself and getting it new. Besides I have several old ipods etc. I can sell and will end up cumulating over half the phone's price already so may as well biggrin.gif

You aren't missing out on much I don't think. I remember having the 4th gen iPod touch and it didn't support the major update for 7 nocheer.gif I'm surprised the 5S is still being supported actually, it'd probably be obsolete by 12 or even mid 11.

From my phone. I was using premier inn WiFi though laugh.gif

Posted by: SouthsideSpinner 24th September 2017, 08:58 PM

I’ve found myself having to force restart the phone 3 or 4 times as the home screen becomes unresponsive, can’t switch apps or turn the screen off (or even the phone itself) although Siri opens as well as triple click home... it’s only happened since the update so I presume it’s that and not my device lmao :’)

(If anyone else has this problem just hold power and home until you see the apple logo and you’re all set without losing any settings/data etc. )

I think the screen recording thing is so essential though and it records sound as well so I can basically download videos to it instantly without faffing around with downloading, converting and syncing on my laptop wub.gif and no it doesn’t record Netflix appaz it just comes up with a blank screen laugh.gif

that happened a couple of times with my old Touch. I can't remember exactly how I solved it but it was either cleaning the headphone jack (I mean THOROUGH, my jack needed so much cleaning with something really long and thin to get it all out) or it might just work with a hard reset (holding power and home until the logo appears)

Apparently my beloved 3D Touch app switcher was intentionally removed for 'technical reasons' but will return in a future iOS 11.x release! YAY

In the meantime I've taken to using that accessibility feature that gives you a floating home button because you can set it so when you 3D Touch that it opens up the app switcher.

Amen Oliver!

Their decision to remove it just to make space was one of the most ridiculous changes they’ve ever made to a device.

I’d like to see an option to have duel-sim which allows someone to make and receive calls from two different phone numbers from the same device. A farfetched wish perhaps, but would be most convenient for me to keep personal calls separate to business calls and only have to carry one phone on me.

I'm extremely late in updating my MacBook to High Sierra, but is anyone else having any wifi connectivity problems with it? It seems like every time I close my laptop and it goes to sleep it takes about 10-15 minutes to find a wifi connection, and in that time constantly drops in and out of being on and off.

I get messages indicating that the wifi is turned on but not connected (when it is) and another saying that it is connected but can't find an IP address (which I've never had an issue with before).

It's not the router as other devices are connecting to it perfectly fine, was just wondering if anyone else had this issue and how they overcame it as I'm finding minimal helpful stuff on the internet. sad.gif

I've thankfully not had issues since switching. How old is your MBP? Older products seem to be getting it in the neck with the 2017 software releases.

I find iOS11 to be a big poor quality wise. It just seems to crawl to a halt, I'm assuming it's because my performance has been savaged because I'm on a release day iPhone 6s, so it's impacted by Apples choice to kill performance in favour of 'battery life' despite the battery life being a bag of shit at this point. (And because it was a release day phone it's already had a battery replacement to solve the unexpected shutdown issue)

About the same as mine then! (Apple logo -> about this Mac - that will tell you what OS you're running, when your MacBook is from and other shit)

Hope you get it resolved

I spoke too soon. Just had to forcibly restart the iMac after relaunching finder that randomly died and getting the mouse on a completely black screen that you couldn't do anything with. Super confusing. It's transition to High Sierra appears not to have been as joyous as the MBP sad.gif

I got the iPhone XR in white on Saturday and it’s absolutely amazing. Much needed upgrade after being stuck with the iPhone 6 forever.

Thanks, I definitely won't bother in that case haha.

Apple Event confirmed for September 10th. New phone has got to be on the cards surely

Apple releasing a new phone? Never

The new iPhone looks ugly as hell

Is anyone else getting extremely frustrated with OS Catalina?

I manually control the music on my iPhone and it will not operate correctly using the new finder approach - I'm losing loads of artwork which, whilst cosmetic only, is incredibly annoying when trying to differentiate quickly between albums. I also find that files don't always transfer correctly and I no longer can access them via iTunes to change the file info and correct the mistake. ARGH.

I hate the way the search function works within the music app, combining iTunes with it is just annoying.

Has anyone bought or contracted a new iPad in the last year? I’m looking to upgrade my 2018 iPad to a Pro but I’m toying with the idea of whether to get the larger screen. Also, I’m unsure if I should wait until the next batch of iPads are launched sometime this year before upgrading.

Interested to hear any feedback from anyone who uses an iPad from the 2020 range.

Was able to get a pair of AirPod Max for $440 today.
Love my AirPod Pro's, can't wait to give them a spin!

My wallet is killing me.

2x Home Pods
Mac Book Air
iPad Mini
Series 7 LTE Watch
4K Apple TV

I wish I could find a nice folio for my iPad Mini with a bit of storage space built in the folio.
Absolutely loving the Mac Book Air. I actually ended up buying a Mini Mac as well for a Desktop/Laptop but now I wish I just bought the MacBook Pro of both because the Pro is out of this world good.

Woah!!

I have been waiting for Apple to replace the 27“ iMac for one with an Apple chip so I can upgrade my nearly decade old iMac for a shiny new one but the announcement keeps getting pushed back 😡

The Series 7 watch is excellent tho. I love it.

I've only really used the built in app for tracking Fitness and another app tracking my sleep, but outside of this I haven't ventured into the Watch too much, what are you mostly using yours for? What are your goto apps?

Posted by: Silas 13th March 2022, 01:37 PM

I mainly use it for fitness and health tracking as well. Peloton is my most used app on it 😅

I think it looks great compared to my old series 3 and it’s nice to have some of the newer health kit items like blood oxygen in this current climate

Posted by: awardinary 13th March 2022, 01:48 PM

I still have a series 3, in good condition and working order, so less inclined to change immediately, but what’s the main differences between this and series 7? I mean they kept talking of doing some sort of ECG test which I can’t see the reason to need to more than once…

I finally caved and got the 24" on my works IT Leasing portal. It is so much faster than the old one 😅 and I am glad I made the switch. The larger screen would have been nice, and the additional connectivity it probably would have brought with it. But I just bought a Dell USB-C hub monitor to use as my primary external display instead so 🤷🏼‍♂️

The only thing that is lightly irritating is that on the German keyboard I now have, when I press and hold a letter, like you do on the iPhone to bring up the variations, the order of some of the options has changed. Like ä is 1 under a which is pointless as äöüß are all on the actual keyboard itself. Gonna have to be careful of that for BJSC but otherwise, I am already really used to the German Keyboard but I do still have go hunting for punctuation from time to time

iOS 16 went live today.
Meh, I would have liked the customized Lock Screens to be, well, more customizable outside of just 1 row of widgets.
The Personalized Spatial Audio seems to be a hit for me however, took a few minutes to set up (and the mapping of the ear made no sense to me) but I noticed a very good improvement with a few tracks so far!

I bought a pair of AirPod Pro 2 for Black Friday last year and I absolutely love them. They may not be the best headphones on the market, but the connectivity between my iPhone and my AirPods (and basically everything else I own) is amazing.

I basically put them on from 7 am and keep them in until mid morning. Small. Powerful. Convenient. I do own a pair of the AirPod Max, but I always prefer the Pros.

Anyone upgraded their iPhones this year? I have been making do with a 12 pro for some time now but considering a change and wondered if the newly launched iPhone 15 will be a big step up having skipped the last couple of years models. Any thoughts on this year’s model that was announced this week?

https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-15-pro/

Available to pre-order from 1pm today.

Posted by: Silas 15th September 2023, 06:59 PM

I got the 14 pro so I have no need to update but my battery is already down to 80% health 👀

The dynamic Island thing is my favourite of the recent changes. It’s so useful, I love it

Oh how do you check the battery health of your iPhone? Maybe that feature isn’t on the 12 Pro.

Posted by: Silas 16th September 2023, 12:13 AM

Settings -> Battery -> Battery Health & Charging

I have it on my 11 so you’ll have it.

Made a typo earlier, I’m on 89% not 80%. Thank god. But still a little lower than I expected after a year

Posted by: awardinary 16th September 2023, 07:49 AM

Ah ok thanks Phil, yeah mine says 90% so that’s ok I guess. I’m not definitely upgrading this year, just a consideration having not had a new phone in a while. I don’t anticipate iPhones will be radically different in the future unless some new breakthrough technology becomes available.

I wonder how many years we will have 5G before that gets upgraded too.

Posted by: dandy* 16th September 2023, 07:56 AM

Developments in camera quality seem to be the main differences these days. I’ve got a 13 Max Pro and, short of any genuinely essential new development, I’ll be sticking with that until I start to think that my photos are significantly worse than Mr D’s - he upgrades every year near enough as part of one of those rental deals where as I just outright buy mine from apple and stick to a low cost sim only package.

Posted by: Silas 16th September 2023, 08:28 AM

90% after three years is really good Wardy! I have a sneaking suspicion it might be because I wirelessly charge but I’m also just a super heavy phone user as well 😅

Yeah, I agree Dandy. It’s mostly the camera that really improves. I went from an 11 to a 14 Pro and really noticed the upgrade. My phone and plan are on separate contracts this time so I’m in a similar situation as you Dandy. I think I’ll probably upgrade to the 17 unless the 16 is super compelling. I’d hold onto this longer but I expect in 2 years time the battery will be total trash so won’t really have another choice

Posted by: Liаm 16th September 2023, 10:08 AM

I’ve got O2 Switch Up where you can upgrade whenever you want for free, so you can try out new phones whenever etc, so I’m thinking I will just upgrade anyway. I know they’re mostly the same each year but the camera improvements are interesting and I’m shallow and love that new phone feeling.
