Last.fm isn't the same as Spotify though? Spotify is largely a music player, whereas last.fm about correlating STATS (with little bits of social shit too)

Last.fm (or my iPod?) seems to really not like when I play one track on repeat on my iPod for 20+ times. Because it scrobbles as ONE PLAY. So unfair. I always put it on my iTunes on repeat and turn off the volume and watch an episode of some show or something. Restoring balance and stuff.

The scrobbler has to change song for it to recognise something else is being played, if Song A starts again as soon as it's finished there's no trigger for it to notice.

Edit: which is odd because what you've actually said is the complete opposite to what's happened on mine. If I play a song 4 times running from my iPod, when I sync it updates the play count by four and will add four scrobbles. If I play a song four times in succession from my laptop it will only scrobble once.

This other time I played a song ('T' <3 ) on repeat for like 10 times and all of them got scrobbled when I got home! A part of me thinks there's a randomizer function running deciding whether to scrobble a song you play on repeat or not.

I do the first bit too. I'll often make a playlist in Windows Media Player and play them on mute, that way my iTunes play counts are safe from being skewed in the process. I didn't realise this addiction was so common!

If I ever need to correct anything, I either reset my account (did that once on impulse) or I use a manual scrobbler like this one: http://universalscrobbler.invitationstation.org/

I have also been known to go through my recently played tracks and deleted anything I didn't want scrobbling. It's the closest thing to OCD I ever do, and I treasure it.

I only changed things because they were wrong (i.e once it wasn't scrobbling because my password wasn't entered and when I fixed that a week's worth of songs started scrobbling 20 times each - which took an age to sort out), rather than altering it because I want to make my music tastes look better.

I should point out I only do that thing when I'm listening to something on CD or whatever. People who artificially boost their playcounts are obv lunatics.

Well basically (can't believe I'm saying this) I like the top 8 most played artists to have playcounts that are a multiple of 5, so if Madonna is on 4028 I'll make a playlist with 7 or 12 songs LOL.

Perhaps it's an indicator that you are destined to love the track after all? The only solution is to listen to it 50 times on repeat until you love it as I'd hate for your 100,000th track to be one you regretted.

I have been scrobbling since 2007, it is quite interesting looking back at the stats - for example most played track in last 12 months: Bon Iver "Holocene" (37 plays) etc.

That is only really the last few months though, I didn't use Last.fm for ages and my most played artist was Melanie Amaro because from my inital couple of months using it (clearly back when US X-Factor was on ) loads went unscrobbled but it loved to scrobble multiple plays of Melanie's performances everytime I listened once So I reset it in March.

i think i'm gonna set-up a new last.fm, since i've just realised i haven't played most of these songs as much as it suggests, sometimes even just TRIPLING in plays just for fun...

oh and it's deciding to say some artists have 200 more plays than they do (i click on their name and they have 200 less? why is mine bugged to hell )

Oh that's happened to me a few times, it came back after a day or two. I also lost ALL my scrobbles for about a week last year and it also decided to PICK and CHOOSE artists at random to delete from my library and then re-add them again.

It's most odd, but it always works out in the end.

This is a widespread problem - it is still scrobbling, you can see the evidence if you click on 'See More' but the main page is slow to update or in some cases not updating at all. I'm sure it'll be resolved tomorrow..

Mine has been doing that for weeks. It misses a week of scrobbles for whatever reason, then catches them all up at once. It's annoying, but it all seems to be present and correct so I'm just letting it be.

Yeah that happens to me all the time. It'll probably scrobble them later on, that's what happens to me. It doesn't scrobble for a while and then suddenly it scrobbles loads and loads of songs.

It soon becomes very addictive - I thought the same in 2007 but 5 years later I still use it regularly. The great thing is most of it is automatic, so when you charge or upload stuff onto your iPod it automatically scrobbles everything you've listened to on the iPod since the last time you charged it. Plus for chart and stats geeks like me it is very interesting.

I like the 'radio' feature of this, maybe a little too many obscure album tracks that I'm not familiar with, but its really good in finding music you like, but also some new discoveries and not the same old music which you have on your itunes etc.

Oh and I do feel the need to cancel a scrobble sometimes, I can't believe Kriss Kross is in my chart atm

You can change the length of time a track needs to play before scrobbling can't you? It's in the 'scrobbling' section of preferences.

Yes, if you click on 'Preferences' and then the Scrobbling Tab there should be a bar which sets the time the track is scrobbled at - but the minimum is 50% of the track so just flicking through tracks on shuffle shouldn't actually lead to a scrobble being listed.

Yeah. My iPod doesn't always scrobble when I stick it in the laptop, clicking 'Diagnostics' made it happen. Every once in a while it does scrobble automatically, but often it doesn't.

I reset my last.fm mid-2010 and the only thing I'm regretting about it is losing 800 or so Bloc Party listens. But other than that it was actually a good move as I felt my taste changed drastically around that time.

Thankfully upon my download of the new scrobbler, I was informed that the update had failed. Didn't realise it was so buggy at the time but then this is last.fm so I should have expected it.

Maybe you need to install the plug-ins? It's working fine for me, at least when I listen on the laptop, haven't tried scrobbling the iPod yet.

The new scrobbler is so irritating! Instead of scrobbling them straight away, it just creates a backlog. For a while I wondered if it was even registering them.

I've had no problems with the new scrobbler so far. It looks quite sleek compared to the old one, but I don't trust it yet. (mostly because it doesn't seem to have the "Your iPod is now ready for scrobbling" pop-up anymore)

I haven't had any problems and the new scrobbler is so much better and purdy than the older one, but i don't want to encourage people to download it in case it's still faulty and you blame me

I always always have my finger ready to double click the icon in the address bar for that same reason. Aside from mostly (but not always) scrobbling when there's a dash in the title it doesn't seem to have RULES.

You can save the pic to your computer, upload it to tinypic.com, and between the image tags, post the raw image link given to you by tinypic. It sounds a bit complicated but it's not really. I tried to post what the image tags are, but it won't let me, so I'll say it this way: The first tag is [ img ] without the spaces, and the second one is [ / img ] without the spaces. Put the raw image link between those two.

CBS-owned digital service Last.fm lost almost £4 million in FY 2012, according to the company's latest financial filings.

The Guardian reports that the fiscal results show a steep decline in UK income, down 69% from £4.15m to £1.27m.

Total revenues fell 21% year-on-year in the period, from £8.13m in 2011 to £6.38m in 2012.

Gross profits more than halved, from £3.7m to £1.4m, while pre-tax losses narrowed slightly from £4.4m to £3.94m.

Advertising revenues fell by 23% to £4.33m, while subscriptions revenues reduced 12% to £1.55m.

There was better news in the US where revenues from Last.fm's US operation grew by 22%, from £2.98m to £3.64m.

Revenue from "countries within the European Union" stayed flat at £740,000, with the "rest of the world" tripling to £725,000.

The company employed 61 staff in 2012 - including 31 technical and 18 in sales - up from 51 in 2011.

Its overall salary bill in FY2012 was £3.7m, up slightly from £3.4m in 2011.

I really got into Marina last year so definitely as part of my music for studying/chilling in the first year of uni - one standout moment I remember is lying back in my conservatory in home looking up at the night sky with 'Numb' blaring through my earphones... so beautiful and contemplatory. And that's why it's my favourite Marina song.

Oh hell yes. Vanilla Twilight was MADE for this question. Silhouette and Lonely Lullaby to a lesser extent too, all among my Owl City faves despite their sadness.

Basically a combination of my brother + Fireflies. We both liked that and various other popular OC songs, he then went full on loon and bought everything to ever do with him and through osmosis I ended up listening to them all, and liking, then loving, them a lot. Ironically I may be a bigger fan than he is these days.

Hard to say actually, probably Umbrella because of its ubiquitousness. I can't remember any of RiRi's pre-Umbrella songs from before 2007, it was only later I began loving them.

Currently trying to revive my account however it's being a bitch cause I've mistagged M.I.A. as M.I.A and it won't accept my changed tag It does seem to have improved since February last year! How do you match up the play counts from iTunes and Last.fm again? Got about years worth of plays missing atm! I remember I matched them up when I first got last.fm so there must be a way??

After looking at the FAQs it appears this is the case Thinking about making a new account to accommodate for this problem. I think I deleted the scrobbler for a while which is the reason for the missing data

My last.fm just randomly skips some scrobbles, especially when I'm listening to a specific album from start to finish, it often doesn't scrobble the final track. Weird.

I am addicted to the shoutbox and tagging on it though. I can't tell you how many times I've looked up a random song's shoutbox just because it pops in my head (or I happen to be listening to it). And often I find my own old shouts that I had completely forgotten about. Fun!

If you reset your plays, re-install your lastfm scrobbler it should ask you if you want to sync the plays (don't kill me if it don't, I've done it a few times but I'm not sure if it still does)

My iTunes play counts have been held on my PC since 2006(when I bought it and it's been my iTunes PC ever since), I finally took the plunge last weekend and bought it's replacement! So, last night I set up my new iMac to migrate all my files over form the PC and after 27hrs of wifi transfers all 76gb of music has transferred to the iMac including playlists and play counts!!!! So happy it worked exactly as I hoped and kept all the plays from the last 8 years. Don't know what I'd have done if I'd had to start again.

So i genuinely do not know what to do with Ke$ha/Kesha. I have ~2000 plays for Ke$ha so am sort of against rescrobbling those. Are people starting fresh for Kesha/Kesha Rose or scrobbling her new music under Ke$ha still or having it as two separate artists?

The more i think about it, the more i am against rescrobbling. That was Ke$ha this is Kesha... Kesha - Tik Tok just isn't right. But equally having Ke$ha for her new stuff wouldn't be right.

Might have to go as separate artists as much as it pains me ...

Won't it autocorrect and change to whatever her new artist name is automatically whenever the time comes?

So for example, if she releases as "Kesha" now the name on her artist profile will be changed to that and all the scrobbles you have will now show as that too?

Irritating as hell . They've semi-done that in the sense they are considered one artist (Marina & the Diamonds) but you can't see 'album' plays if they are from 'Marina AND the diamonds' (e.g. I played Electra Heart 386 times, but none of them are shown when I open her artist page up. But when I change the URL to Marina and the diamonds they are all now visible). It does that with Beyonce and Beyoncé

I don't think that makes any sense

Adam - not entirely sure what you mean.. You can change settings on your last.fm profile so it doesn't change your plays and they scrobble exactly how you want them too.

The John Martin thing i have no idea about though :S how strange

Oh are they one artist now? What about Florence &/+/and the Machine... I had plays separated between the two for ages, will have to check if they have merged now.

You can either change the file's tags in your My Music folder or alternatively on iTunes right click the song/album and go to "get info". Then simply type in the new tag (Break Free (feat. Zedd)) and when you play it it *should* scrobble exactly like that unless you have dodgy correction settings on your last.fm.

Ah well you see I use YouScrobble and it doesn't always do it right. If I listen to a song for the first time (well, a specific video) the script will just guess what it thinks it should be. Before it scrobbles I can make sure it's correct. But if I'm too late it will do ^ this

I have trouble with it all the time. I think I might just give up trying to scrobble my iPod... My stats are already so messed up that it's pointless to even try to correct all of it.

Edit: Before someone says "CLICK ON DIAGNOSTICS", I do, it's just it keeps multiplying plays or whatever. And it has skipped lots too.

Why? Well, logically speaking the thing is supposed to keep track of what you've listened to and since I've been listening to music since 1987 most of my listens have gone unaccounted for. So, rather than continue I reset every January so I can see just the current years listening.

It was some trend that got kickstarted many years ago and I have a pretty severe hatred for it.

What's the point? What purpose does it serve?

It'd be nice to click on a page and see a varying range of interesting opinions or even discussion about it, rather than a load of people with nothing to say for themselves copying and pasting a statement and raising the bracketed number each time.

So apparently last.fm doesn't recognise plays on the latest iTunes update http://www.last.fm/forum/34905/_/2239689 seem to have the same problem so it's not just mine. Crying & trying to downgrade my iTunes, praying that fixes it..

Checked out that page, and I managed to fix this thanks to a link that's kicking around related threads.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - installing it using this fixes it with minimal other side effects it seems - if anyone needs that.

OH GOD. The absolute HORROR of discovering Kristin Chenoweth is spelled with an -in and not an -en. Last.fm has autocorrected all of the instances where she's the only credited artist, but my plays for the Wicked soundtrack are shameful. 51 scrobbles to the artist "Idina Menzel & Kristen Chenoweth". Best solution to this problem: just don't scrobble Cheryl.

(I wish they let you fix your mistakes, it's so frustrating having them in your library and not being able to fix it as it will mess up your 'last x months' brackets for a YEAR)
