BuzzJack Music Forum _ 21st Century Throwback _ Top of the Flops: 2011

Posted by: awardinary 28th April 2024, 07:55 PM

Thank you for all the suggestions for your chart flops of 2010, now we look at the next year, 2011. What songs do you remember from this time and why do you remember them fondly? These could be songs that failed to make the UK Top 40 Singles Chart, or even the Top 75, but they have to have been released as a single at some point during the year.

I will nominate something in a little while that I personally enjoyed in this year, but for now, it’s over to you. happy.gif

Ellie Goulding - 'Lights'

Stalled at #49 in the U.K. but did make it all the way to #2 in the U.S. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Scene 28th April 2024, 08:14 PM

In fairness to Rihanna MD was inexplicably not pushed in the UK.

Posted by: Roba. 28th April 2024, 08:18 PM

Wasn't mad on any of his songs before but I really liked this from Matt Cardle which peaked at 185. Also a fan of the Mel C duet too!

Posted by: T Boy 28th April 2024, 08:21 PM

Matt Cardle was done dirty by almost everyone. Starlight should have been huge.

Posted by: gooddelta 28th April 2024, 08:37 PM

A wonderful pop jazz number that reached No.65 here but was huge across Europe and at least provided Dutch singer Caro with a huge selling album here.

This is wonderful from the US duo, it peaked at No.46.

This should have been a hit for the X Factor duo and the great Alcazar! But did nothing. I see my upload of it on YouTube lives on, with 43k views ohmy.gif

I LOVED this, and related to it a lot as an album track. It was later issued as a single and peaked at...No.185

No.76 for Sweden's epic Eurovision 3rd placer Popular by Eric Saade. The winner slightly charted higher but I have little interest in sharing that oops.

Love this country song that got to No.74 but was bigger in the US.

No.64 for this classic must be some sort of crime.

I can't remember why this did so badly, it only got to No.54 and even had a video shown during Comic Relief. I guess the album already having sold millions didn't help.

Posted by: Roba. 28th April 2024, 09:04 PM

Some Sophie Ellis-Bextor as well with her great duet with The Feeling on 'Leave Me Out Of It' (was bound to happen at some point being married to one of the members!)

That wasn't their lead single from that era though which I think made 145 or something. 'Set My World On Fire'. Kept getting pushed back so many times..

Posted by: Riser 29th April 2024, 12:58 AM

'Smile' was also a flop single for Avril Lavigne.

Britney Spears had two, 'I Wanna Go' and 'Criminal'.

Posted by: Roba. 29th April 2024, 01:06 AM

Two great tracks here. Chili's peaked at 44 I think. Not sure if OneRep even charted.

Posted by: Roba. 29th April 2024, 03:04 PM

2011 Eurovision winner peaked at 61. I didn't overly mind this but I know it got highly slated on here for being bland lol.

Posted by: Scene 29th April 2024, 04:01 PM

Looking back, these missing the top 40 is a bit wtf but I guess everyone owned the album.

Posted by: jimwatts 29th April 2024, 04:29 PM

Rich has already mentioned her, but Caro's album had many great tracks - this was also a minor hit at #84:

This one has picked up a lot in the streaming era, but #64 was its peak as a chart hit:

Keri Hilson - Pretty Girl Rock (#53)

Keri Hilson launched her 2nd era with this infectious lead single. I assumed it would be huge for her... it wasn't. It charted at #53 and spent just 2 weeks in the top 100. The bigger travesty from this era though is that the 2nd single was an absolute Summer Smash in the waiting....

Keri Hilson feat. Nelly - Lose Control (DNC)

...like... that had "SMASH" written all over it! It's a shame it didn't chart here at all! Deserved to be absolutely massive. The sound was perfect for the time too. Plenty of hits that were "similar". But this felt a bit more commercial to me so I was gutted it wasn't a huge hit.

---

Skylar Grey - Invisible (#63)

Coming off an incredible start of the year by featuring on 'I'm Coming Home' & 'I Need A Doctor', Skylar thought it was time to go on her own... this got airplay iirc? It bombed at charted at #63. Such a gorgeous song.

---

The Saturdays - My Heart Takes Over (#15)

#15... but 3 weeks in the top 100... this song did not deserve that! sad.gif It's absolutely STUNNING and by FAR their most underrated! I really thought this was going to be a huge Quarter 4 hit for them </3

---

Yasmin - On My Own (#39)

She deserved to be way bigger than her hits suggested. Such a gorgeous voice and I predicted big things for this.

---

Fefe Dobson - Stuttering (DNC)

Just deserves better in general, but this was an absolute smash waiting to happen with the right push!

Posted by: Roba. 29th April 2024, 09:26 PM

'My Heart Takes Over' deserved better. Shame Yasmin never took off much either.

Posted by: Riser 30th April 2024, 01:59 AM

Kreayshawn - Gucci Gucci

I loved this! IIRC Reggie Yates interviewed Kreayshawn on the chart show the day 'Gucci Gucci' was released, and they talked as if it was sure to be top 40 next week. It landed at #77 instead.

Dev - In The Dark

One of the best from the brief saxophone craze of 2011. #37 in the UK but #11 in the US!

Willow - 21st Century Girl

'Whip My Hair' didn't give this enough momentum to chart any higher than #91.

Joe Jonas - See No More

I wasn't a fan but recall it was expected to chart higher than #53.

Posted by: Scene 30th April 2024, 05:59 AM

Pretty Girl Rock was such a unexpected good song from Keri kink.gif love the video!

^ There are so many amazing Dubstep and D&B examples from this year

Posted by: awardinary 6th May 2024, 07:25 PM

Flops from the first quarter of 2011;

The Wombats – Jump Into The Fog [Peaked at #35 in January 2011]
Their last Top 40 single was this low charting flop from early 2011, no other singles were able to perform any better afterwards. Not their most well known single but a decent one.

Eric Prydz – Niton (The Reason) [Peaked at #45 in February 2011]
Falling short of making it into the UK Top 40, partly due to a big influx of music from Glee Cast, this Eric Prydz single was one of his last to appear in the charts.

Lupe Fiasco – The Show Goes On [Peaked at #49 in February 2011]
An artist with a few minor hits in the late 00s, this single was the last the charts would see of him as he finished with a flop in 2011.

Alesha Dixon feat. Jay Sean – Every Little Part Of Me [Peaked at #78 in March 2011]
The former Mis-Teeq lady was not able to achieve any further hits in her career, she had this flop from 2011 with a guest feature by Jay Sean.

McFly – That’s The Truth [Peaked at #35 in March 2011]
McFly were once a chart force to be reckoned with, but with the likes of One Direction and The Wanted on the scene, there was less chance of hits in the future, and this stalled at #35.

Rebecca Black – Friday [Peaked at #60 in March 2011]
She could have been a one hit wonder, instead she goes down as a one flop wonder. This catchy pop song failed to impact the UK despite success elsewhere in the world.

Posted by: TheSnake 6th May 2024, 08:06 PM

Forgot Dev had that Mr Saxobeat inspired song.

The dubstep and D&B flops are great, there are probably even more of them in 2012.

Posted by: Jessie Where 6th May 2024, 08:14 PM

That's my favourite McFly song!

Posted by: awardinary 7th May 2024, 10:30 PM

The second quarter of 2011 had the following flops;

Emily Osment – Lovesick [Peaked at #57 in April 2011]
Actress and Disney star Emily Osment had a charting song in 2011 which flopped. It’s the only charting single in the short music career she had at the time.

Tinie Tempah feat. Travis Barker – Simply Unstoppable (Yes Remix) [Peaked at #33 in April 2011]
One of Tinie’s best singles thanks to a collaboration with Travis Barker of Blink-182 fame. The song was actually a promotional song used in a Lucazade advert at the time.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – The Golden Age [Peaked at #70 in May 2011]
The only charting single for this Danish band who showed much potential at the time. They released a few albums between 2008-2014 but then started to fizzle out.

Charlie Simpson – Down Down Down [Peaked at #65 in May 2011]
As one third of Busted, Charlie Simpson was much later in releasing solo material than Matt Willis or James Bourne (as part of Son Of Dork). His first solo effort was this flop from early 2011.

Jedward – Lipstick [Peaked at #40 in May 2011]
Ireland chose X Factor twins Jedward as their Eurovision act in 2011 and this was the song that represented them. It would go on to become their second and final charting single.

Alexis Jordan – Hush Hush [Peaked at #66 in June 2011]
Following two Top 10 hits, this third was not as lucky and managed to flop well outside the Top 40 in the Summer. Her short career was over very quickly after this flop.

Olly Murs – Busy [Peaked at #45 in June 2011]
This misfire from Olly Murs saw him get his first flop single, but he quickly bounced back from the disappointment with a #1 later in the year.

Parade – Perfume [Peaked at #38 in June 2011]
Having already scored a Top 10 debut hit, the future looked promising for this girl group, but after this single struggled to make the Top 40 they were dropped as a band.

Posted by: Roba. 7th May 2024, 10:35 PM

'Busy' is one of Olly's best from his earliest stuff. Nice track. Also like 'Hush Hush' there too. Shame Alexis Jordan didn't continue her success longer than 2 or 3 songs though.

'Lipstick' laugh.gif

Posted by: Jessie Where 7th May 2024, 11:04 PM

That Alexis Jordan - Hush Hush one still bothers me. It sounded like a huge smash and should've been.

My only conclusion is Radio 1 and the like were unwilling to support it after the performance of her album or something.

Posted by: lewistgreen 10th May 2024, 07:46 PM

Not the best start for the lead single for the second era of The Ting Tings. After the success of their debut in 2007-09, in comes Hang It Up at the end of 2011 and limped into #124 in the chart. This was the last time they were "seen" in the singles chart. I think it's a bloody good song to be fair, it's catchy and the production is reminiscent of 'The Big Beat' (which Dizzee Rascal also sampled). It's always stuck in my head for ages after I hear it!

Posted by: awardinary 11th May 2024, 08:27 PM

Here’s some unmentioned flops from the third quarter of 2011;

Martin Solveig feat. Kele – Ready To Go [Peaked at #48 in July 2011]
Having not yet established himself as a serious hitmaker, DJ Martin Solveig teamed up with Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke for this single to follow up his earlier hit Hello.

LMFAO feat. Natalia Kills – Champagne Showers [Peaked at #32 in July 2011]
One of the most interesting new artists of 2011 was these guys, and their ability to score a major summer #1 single should have given this one a better peak than what it got, but it wasn’t to be.

Beady Eye – The Beat Goes On [Peaked at #64 in July 2011]
Also known as Liam Gallagher’s other band, Beady Eye had a few low charting singles in 2010 and 2011, and this was the last one to make it into the charts at a very low peak.

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend [Peaked at #55 in August 2011]
She should have racked up so many more hits in her career for the legacy she left, but this was just another example of not quite enough to break into the charts, and it deserved better.

Evanescence – What You Want [Peaked at #72 in August 2011]
Having been one of the biggest names of the year in 2003 with their huge hit Bring Me To Life, the relevance of Evanescence was all but over by now as this flop proved.

Nicola Roberts – Lucky Day [Peaked at #40 in September 2011]
Her second solo single was this one from the Girls Aloud star, she wasn’t quite able to make it as a solo artist but she did have a couple of Top 40 singles to her name so that’s something.

Posted by: TheSnake 11th May 2024, 08:28 PM

I loved 'Lucky Day' and really disliked 'Beat of My Drum' back then!

I also loved 'Champagne Showers' back then and was disappointed by its chart peak.

Posted by: awardinary 12th May 2024, 10:56 PM

A final batch of flops for 2011 from the fourth quarter;

Timbaland feat. Pitbull – Pass At Me [Peaked at #40 in October 2011]
Timbo and Mr. Worldwide should have been a collaboration that stormed the charts at the time of their peak, but this miserable chart peak showed that the song just wasn’t it.

Example vs. Laidback Luke – Natural Disaster [Peaked at #37 in October 2011]
This always seemed bigger to me than its chart peak suggests, and for the latter, it was only his second ever Top 40 single. Example would go on to score many more hits though.

Slow Moving Millie – Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want [Peaked at #31 in November 2011]
A one-flop-wonder was this song by Slow Moving Millie, which respectably did reach the Top 40 for more than a week, but maybe has been lost in the archives of history since then.

Cee Lo Green – Anyway [Peaked at #52 in December 2011]
The demise of Cee Lo Green as an artist was very rapid, from having a major #1 single in 2006 with Gnarls Barkley, to a solo #1 in 2010, things just started going downhill from there, and this was his penultimate charting single.

Alexandra Stan – Get Back [Peaked at #56 in December 2011]
Flowed by releasing right when all the Christmas hits flooded the charts, Alexandra Stan tried to get another hit off the back of Mr. Saxobeat but she was not able to repeat the success here.

Grouplove – Tongue Tied [Peaked at #84 in December 2011]
Never likely to do well amidst the Christmas singles, but this flop did pick up some traction at the time and could have done better if the release was delayed by a few weeks.

Posted by: Roba. 12th May 2024, 11:15 PM

Whilst not as good as 'Mr Saxobeat' I did find 'Get Back' another bop!

Posted by: TheSnake 13th May 2024, 06:52 PM

This is my favourite single from their Mercury Prize-nominated album English Riviera - some great early 80s New Romantic/Brit-funk influenced music.

Posted by: lewistgreen 13th May 2024, 06:59 PM

Champagne Showers definitely deserved better but it suffered at the hands of Party Rock Anthem still being such a mainstay in the chart I think. If you look at Sexy And I Know It going to #5, I think Champagne Showers would've benefitted from being held back a few weeks (or skipped over and released later on)

The Example and Laidback Luke track was great, the chorus production is very similar to trance really.

Slow Moving Millie lived up to her name chartwise - her song didn't really didn't get anywhere.

I thought 'Natural Disaster' would be huge at the time, it sounded like it would be and especially coming after two #1s!

Why did Nicola look more like Cheryl than herself in this YouTube screen grab of the video? laugh.gif I loved Cinderella's Eyes, I so wish she could have had a bigger solo career but I'm not sure her style of music really fit with what was big at the time. I guess she did better than Nadine's, which was royally messed up with that exclusive Tesco deal.

I have no recollection at ALL of that Timbaland/Pitbull song. Not missed much having just listened to it.

I do remember the Alexandra Stan track but couldn't place it by title alone, for some reason I always thought it was called ASAP. Deserved better, good song!
