Hey everyone! So, I've chosen Ava Max as my artist for the AF Idol.

Obviously, I'm very aware that Ava has a tiny discography, especially compared to some of the other artists in the game. But her discography is full of bops nonetheless!

The first round is free choice. Some of the songs I had in mind were: Naked, Kings & Queens, Tattoo and OMG What's Happening. I'm completely open to other ideas though so let me know what you think.

Kings and Queens feels like a strong choice to start things off!

Definitely send Naked at some point if you can Maybe save that for a bit deeper into the competition!

Ava was a consideration as an entry for myself. She is pretty much slaying it already with only 1 album and a few scrapped singles/"promo singles".

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I'm saving Sweet but Pyscho for the final round and I think I'm going to save Naked too.

I'm now thinking either Torn or Kings & Queens to open with. (I'll definitely use Torn at some point even if I don't send it this round).

Starting off with a relatively recent top 20 hit from Ava, I went with Kings & Queens for this round.

Round 2 is ‘First OR last single from any era’. Since Ava only really has one era , I guess the choices are Sweet but Pyscho and My Head & My Heart?

Since I’m definitely saving Sweet but Psycho for last, I think it has to be Ava's most recent single, My Head & My Heart!

Round 3: Free album track choice
This is the first of three album track rounds. (Round 5 is ‘Uptempo album track’ and Round 7 is ‘Should’ve been a single’). In total I think there are just 7 options to choose from.

Our options are:
- Tattoo
- OMG What's Happening
- Call Me Tonight
- Born to the Night (Save this for Round 7?)
- Take You To Hell
- Belladonna
- Rumors

Does anyone have any suggestions/favourites from that list that they’d like to see sent?

Just to clarify with her messy singles schedule, we are considering the following as the singles from 'Heaven & Hell'

01. Sweet But Psycho
02. So Am I
03. Torn
04. Salt (Significant European success)
05. Kings & Queens
06. Who's Laughing Now
07. Naked

'OMG (What's Happening)' was a promotional single, so can be used as an album track.

I think:

'Belladonna', 'Tattoo', 'Born To the Night' or 'OMG (What's Happening)' are your best choices for this.

I'd probably say 'Belladonna' and save BTTN and OMG(WH) for the next album track rounds!

Ah thank you for clarifying! I did think about OMG but for some reason everywhere I looked said it was the 7th single. That's great though as it's one of my favourites from Heaven & Hell

Round 4: Free Choice
For this round (and also Round 6) we can send anything from Ava’s discography.

Definitely have to send Torn for one of these, and I think Naked is the obvious other choice. I know a few people said Naked could be good later in the competition so I was thinking save that for round 6 and send Torn this round?

But then again, even though they’re probably not as strong choices, it would be nice to send something that isn’t on Heaven & Hell - maybe one of her collabs? I personally really like ‘Let it Be Me’ but I’m not sure if that’d do well.

I’m torn so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I think 'Torn' would probably be best here. But I assumed it'd be either that or 'Naked' (which I am not overly keen on, personally - but I know it has it's fans!)

Please don't listen to these Naked naysayers, it's easily a career highlight for Ms Max, pop perfection

I'm happy for you to save Naked for a later round and go with the big guns this round i.e. Torn, if that's what you're most comfortable with! And if Torn doesn't end at least Top 3, AF Idol will be cancelled due to lack of good taste x

Hmmm I don't know if So Am I is that well liked on here, but I didn't think Salt was either so idk

I'm also now thinking seeing as Torn is probably the favourite on here (except of course Sweet but Pyscho) would it be better to save that for Round 6?

So, another album track round. This time it has to be uptempo… which isn’t really an issue for Ava.

Was thinking either ‘Belladonna’ or ‘OMG What’s Happening’ here, but as always open to suggestions.

But I won't oppose to 'Belladonna'!! It's top 5 on the album for me, I just know that a few people who like Ava aren't too fussed on it and I think it's a bit of a grower!

Just reposting this:

As a source as to what is and isn't considered "uptempo", google states that typically an uptempo track is 120 bpm. I think we'd be willing to look at anything over 100 bpm (Beyonce - Crazy In Love & Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body both come up as roughly 100 bpm so we'll use that as a guide)

If you can't be bothered to find out what would be eligible lmk and I'll source it!

Out of the 3, my order of preference is:

Belladonna > OMG (What's Happening) >> Take You to Hell

The first two I would like to say are kinda guaranteed points for me, TYtH... Idk. Depends what I discover - but I assume I'd probably end up voting for it!

It was a tough choice, I *almost* went with Belladonna but in the end I decided to go with the one which most people said was their favourite. I know some people aren't too keen on this one (I love it, myself ) but as Jay said, it shows a slightly different side to Ava so I hope that anyone who hasn't heard it before enjoys!

Glad to see lots of love for Take You To Hell! It finished 4th which is Ava's highest placing yet

Round 6: Free Choice

Based on people’s thoughts previously I think it’s between Naked and Salt for this round (unless anyone has any other suggestions).

Personally I prefer Naked but happy to send Salt if it’s what the people want.

I love Naked and I think it's within her Top 5 songs... when Ava was chosen for this contest, I thought Naked would be a no brainer to send at some point. However it seems that a few here aren't particularly wild about it. I'd hate to see it do badly. I never considered it to be a potentially risky choice, but the feedback seems quite clear.

I do like Salt though, I could see it doing quite well!

(Popjustice members regularly praise Naked, they know what's up xx)

'Salt'


I have gone with ‘Salt’ for this round - sorry to all the ‘Naked’ fans (I love Naked but the feedback was pretty overwhelmingly in favour of Salt).


I’m pretty much certain on my choices for the last 2 rounds so hopefully this was the last tough decision to make!

Salt seemed to be a single everywhere, but it wasn’t picked up in the UK for some reason

I can imagine it going Silver in the UK pretty soon though since it seemed to hover around in the low streaming and downloads chart pretty much everywhere for a long long time. I don't get why they just didn't push it hard before 'So Am I'.

So 'Salt' finished 12th - we went from our highest placing so far to our lowest so far.

Kind of regret not sending 'Naked' now, but it was a very strong round so who knows if that would have done any better!

Anyway, onwards and upwards to the next round. I'm pretty certain on 'Born to the Night' here - it's in my Top 3 songs of hers and easily my favourite album track.
