BuzzJack Music Forum _ Kylie and Dannii Minogue _ Hand On Your Heart ● 35 years on

Posted by: Liam.k. 25th April 2024, 10:39 AM

'Hand On Your Heart' was released on 24 April 1989 as the lead single from Kylie's second album 'Enjoy Yourself'. Written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, the song continues the cheery dance-pop sound of her debut. It infamously fell short of debuting at #1 in the UK - something no female artist had done with a song - due to the cassette price being lower than chart regulations allowed. It did climb to #1 the following week and finished the year as the 10th best seller of 1989. The song also achieved Top 10 success in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland (#1), Spain and Switzerland.

35 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Hand On Your Heart'?

Never appreciated how close she was to number one week 3….until now.

Always assumed the charity single was much further ahead.

This is another classic Kylie song that deserves much more streams and attention.

She used to say she hated the video (image and styling) but I think it’s the first time we saw Kylie as the charismatic pop star rather than the charismatic actress that was in Neighbours.

I'd love to say I remember it from that time, but I don't laugh.gif

This is a song I'm never inclined to play but do really enjoy when I hear it. I'm surprised it doesn't get performed more on tour, it was a huge hit at the time and is one of her top 5 most streamed from her PWL days. Would make a nice change from the usual Lucky/Locomotion/Devil.

It really was huge but a shame the mess up cost it making a number 1 debut, but least it got their in the end. I always think its such a very very pwl song and I mean that in a good way but I don't know what it is I never fully enjoy it live and generally speaking I prefer live versions of her songs.

Still remember getting the 7” vinyl from my birthday, still love the song and video.

Like all vinyls back then I had to wait to get it but when I did it was like a wow I finally have it.

I love this song and the year 1989 to me was the completion of the transition form Aussie soap star to “British” pop star. She was everywhere in the UK mags those days, on TV, the “adoption” of Kylie by the British felt complete. Whether it’s talk shows, Smash Hits poll winners party, tabloids, etc. - you JUST couldn’t escape her. (And I mean that in a good way).

Come to think of it I’ve got the 12-inch! I think a relative found it in a charity shop for me. Don’t think I’ve ever played it though! laugh.gif

It was an amazing time as she was just so huge, just wish at the time I was old enough to have my own money to buy everything kylie I wanted.

Hand on your heart is a stand out early PWL track for me and it’s still sounds fantastic.

I prefer NTL and WCAT

Posted by: Padamic Tension 26th April 2024, 05:24 PM

I love all the early pwl singles right up to the rhythm of love singles, lets get to it singles are hit and miss, i like them but not as much as the others from the first 3 albums, hand on your heart though always has great memories when i hear it i find it hard to believe its actually 35 years old even though it is.

I like all 3 singles equally. Whilst the first album had more gems, I like EY album as it feels more polished and professional. She'd moved to London by the time recording began, so it felt more consistent as they just got more facetime together.

I agree, I think her debut is still a great album but enjoy yourself is just that step ahead of it. Hand on your heart was the perfect way to kick the era off going number 1 and played its part with enjoy yourself opening with such impressive sales.

Agree with this - love KM88, but EY was such a great time and a solid pop album.

Very solid plus it showed her success wasn't a one hit album wonder and that she was maintaining success outside her debut.
I often think if her first 2 albums and fever were the big hits in the streaming era how much bigger her sales would be as those 3 albums in particular were huge hits as were the singles.

I love how I always remember facts like this laugh.gif

Pleased it managed to climb to #1 the following week - would’ve been drama.gif if it had missed out due to the blunder with the cassettes.

Posted by: Padamic Tension 27th April 2024, 10:27 PM

At the time i knew nothing of the blunder but remember been so excited when it climbed to number 1.

Posted by: Sacred3 28th April 2024, 10:54 PM

Still a great song

Posted by: Padamic Tension 29th April 2024, 12:27 AM

Hand on your heart like much of her early work always trigger some great memories of my childhood, stupid things like counting down to top of the pops to see if she would on and also super excited if she did tv interviews etc.
Hand on your heart number 1 week I can clearly remember the full day of what I was doing, where I was and who with all tied into making sure I'd be home in time to see Totp so I could record the kylie part so I wouldn't take up too much space on my 3 hr vhs blank video which eventually ended up as 3 hours of kylie.

Hand On Your Heart is one of Kylie's strongest Number 1 singles.
