It was particularly bad luck that the Neon Nights era came at such a low point for sales. Also doesn't help that X Factor seemed to do nothing to raise Dannii's music profile either, and there's not been any incentive to purchase or listen to her music since.

Looking on Spotify, Dannii has 117k monthly listeners, compared to 4.2m for Kylie, and only has three songs above 1m plays. The most listened to track is 'I Begin to Wonder' with 2.5m plays, which is the level of some Kylie album tracks.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 22nd April 2020, 06:58 PM

Dannii sales are so disappointing I always thought some of her bigger hits sold way more, not one single will ever go platinum for her. I always said she should have done a cheryl and taken complete musical advantage of x factor, if she had things could be very different. She is no kylie for me but deserves more success than she has especially with the neon nights stuff.

Posted by: Liam.k. 22nd April 2020, 07:25 PM

I feel like she spoiled the momentum of her music career before X Factor but it was definitely seems odd not to use the programme as a platform to promote new music.

Why did Club Disco arrive three years after 'You Won't Forget About Me' and only get a digital release? Did the album even get mentioned on her first series of X Factor?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 22nd April 2020, 07:32 PM

I feel like 'Touch Me Like That' was her attempt, but frustratingly that went rather pear-shaped.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 22nd April 2020, 07:32 PM

From what I remember it was never mentioned, I think someone posted before that dannii was nervous about doing music on x factor and that's why it never happened. Imagine if she had had material as strong as songs like I begin to wonder and who do love now and done a performance how big a hit she could have had as back then an x factor performance had a big impact.

Posted by: Liam.k. 22nd April 2020, 07:35 PM

I guess there was a lot of media attention surrounding whether she was qualified to be a judge so all her focus may have been on that. I also suppose that she was making more money on X Factor than she was from her music career too.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 22nd April 2020, 08:00 PM

Her profile peaked on a factor and financially I'd say it was a good time for her.I just feel she should have advanced her career more in the back of it as she proved a very popular judge once she settled in.x factor completly changed my view of dannii in a positive way.

Posted by: vibe 22nd April 2020, 08:28 PM

Her YouTube channel is also terrible . Not all videos on there like there used to be, some under Dannii, some under London records , it is a mess at the moment. So her views are criminally low !!

I think the estimate for her debut album is quite low from reading figures over the years .

I always felt sorry for $ucce$$ spending three weeks at number 11 !!

Dannii’s momentum was lost when she went to AATW records they forced her to release the hits and beyond and not a full new album. The singles did not compare to NN era !! She also took some amazing songs with her that were ignored but we got some of them on unleashes and club disco.

Posted by: Liam.k. 22nd April 2020, 08:38 PM

Very true about her YouTube channel. Those official ones under London Records were only put up a couple of years ago too! They need all her videos up on one channel.

I've seen estimates of 250k for her debut album but that's far too higher. It finished 1991 as the 90th best seller and I know that Metallica's album at #86 sold about 125k, so I've gone for 130k as a to date estimate.

'Success' was actually kept out by Kylie's 'Shocked' on its second week at #11!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 22nd April 2020, 09:19 PM

At the time, i wasnt so keen on Dannii and i was delighted Kylies Shocked stayed ahead of Success, i never liked success and i still dont. As the hits album is mentioned, i was sure at the time it would be much bigger than it was, when it was released i was sure it would go top 10 and was really disappointed it didnt and was even more disappointed by how quick it sank down the chart. Lesat its managed to go silver.

Posted by: ___∆___ 22nd April 2020, 10:22 PM

Those sales of ‘Girl’ still traumatise me drama.gif Such an amazing album (backed up by a great headline tour too!), I still listen to the album all the time and it deserved so much more.

Dannii really had a tough time with her labels Eternal and then AATW - neither knew how to market or handle a pop star it seems and obviously hoped they could just sell her material off her name and when that didn’t happen they didn’t know what to do with her.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 22nd April 2020, 10:34 PM

Dannii def made big mistakes with the labels she went it, i wonder had dannii signed up to pwl initially would her career have worked out better. Kylie really showed how savvy she was with labels as overall she went with the right labels at the time to keep her career going. Girl isnt a bad album at all but its sales are tragic which is a shame as it has a few good songs but it all went wrong with the label.

Thinking about it, I'm actually quite impressed that the 15th anniversary re-issue of Neon Nights was able to enter the Top 100, solely based on promotion from her Twitter account.

There is definitely the demand there - I think ‘Girl’ could return too if issued on vinyl.

That was because originally Hits & Beyond got released in the place of her planned fifth album after AATW couldn't figure out a way to market a new Dannii album.

Even though we joke about Dannii's webmaster / part time P&R / tireless champion (mostly because of the nafunsayz memes), we only really got the Unleashed sessions (which was the original tracks recorded at London Records post-Neon Nights) and then Club Disco (which were the material recorded at AATW) due to him. Of course, there was then the 1995 sessions which were recorded post-Get Into You at Mushroom and before she signed with Eternal/Warner for Girl.

Dannii unfortunately didn't seem to want to take advantage of her heightened profile with new music, the only thing to come out was really Touch Me Like That which she ignored once radio didn't pick it up. I guess she felt like she had real momentum for once to make a career besides being "Kylie's sister" and to be fair it's worked out for her. I'm not sure it would've been worth for her at that point to perform it on X-Factor (Simon at least claim he offered) only for it to peak somewhere in the lower top 20 and be branded as a flop.

Posted by: vibe 23rd April 2020, 08:42 PM

Tommie I remember you from the old Dannii forums .

My name was Vibe there too I think (from Vibe on 🙈)

We do owe a lot to Nathan don’t we ! I messaged him the other day to sort out Dannii’s YouTube channel but he said i would have to contact her manager .

He did say that during the lockdown he is making sure that all the songs that Dannii owns up to and including unleashed will be available on streaming platforms soon.

Posted by: Euphorique 23rd April 2020, 08:50 PM

Thanks vibe. It's so underwhelming how long it has taken them to get her stuff on streaming services, and let's not even talk about youtube. A damn mess.

Posted by: tommie 23rd April 2020, 08:58 PM

Honestly, I think it's a shame that Hits & Beyond hasn't been in print since it was originally released basically. I could've actually seen it being pushed to Silver at least if it had been widely available during her X-Factor days, but I assume going through with the licensing was hard enough for something that barely sold 45k on its original release and didn't feel worth it for at best pushing it to 60k.

Such a waste they couldn't get Do You Believe Me Now? on THAB originally as I feel it could've worked as a single at the time.

I’d still love to know why the OCC downgraded this from its original peak of #36 to #39 a few years ago, what ‘new’ sales information could they have possibly unearthed 20+ years later laugh.gif Glad it still managed to maintain a Top 40 placing though.

Dannii failed to capitalize on the success of NN, it was so disappointing to watch as a big fan.

I remember there was lots of hype with You Won't Forget About Me, but we all were floored when it only came it at #7, and Ja Rule of all artists came it at #1 with a non-event of a single. The charts were pretty bad that year tbh, mid 00s was quite harsh on dance-pop music. I thought this was just a small bump on the road, but instead she veered deeper into the dance track gets vocal treatment, and while sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt - which was the case for Perfection. Touch Me Like That was the final nail in the coffin.

By the time Club Disco came out people were sorta over her music. The album wasn't anywhere near as good as NN so I guess it was deserved, but I feel she could've achieved so much more, NN showed she had the potential to be one of the leading ladies of UK pop music. The Club Disco era was so damn messy and just made her brand seem low budget, and with no sense of cohesion and direction.

I just don't think AATW had any clue how to market Dannii beyond a "featuring" credit. Obviously they saw the big success with RIVA and then with JCA (even if I Begin To Wonder was credited as a solo single). Add that she had to entirely start over once she left for AATW as it doesn't seem like London let her have the tracks she had recorded at that point (hence why they quickly put her on Flower Power's track).

QUOTE(Euphorique @ Apr 23 2020, 09:52 PM) *
By the time Club Disco came out people were sorta over her music. The album wasn't anywhere near as good as NN so I guess it was deserved, but I feel she could've achieved so much more, NN showed she had the potential to be one of the leading ladies of UK pop music. The Club Disco era was so damn messy and just made her brand seem low budget, and with no sense of cohesion and direction.

To be fair - neither Club Disco or Unleashed were fully realised albums - both were essentially just tracks she recorded for first London and then AATW. Had she actually put out a proper album instead of Hits & Beyond I figure it would've had a different tracklisting plus the tracks that didn't make THAB would've likely been further polished.

Club Disco just wasn't an era. It was an after-thought for her fans and I wouldn't really count it as anything else.

Both Eternal and AATW were dreadful labels for Dannii - as has been said above she really could have had so much more success in the UK had she been handled correctly.

Eternal were a mess after delivering us the iconic ‘All I Wanna Do’ - whilst I don’t dislike it EIW was not the right follow up and when it stalled at #15 they instantly didn’t know what to do with her especially as they saw it as the song to save the album, also releasing ‘Girl’ 4 weeks after AIWD was a mistake - Dannii had been away at that point for a few years so to rush the album out after 1 single in the lead up to Q4 was never going to work. Eternal failed with so many other acts they had at the time too drama.gif They didn’t know if they were a dance or pop label.

AATW is an iconic label but they don’t have a history of being able to turn artists into album acts (especially their female artists), when N-Dubz took off for them Universal basically took over to manage their releases. AATW is a great label for a few dance hits with 8 months between releases rather than for an act that needs some time and attention.

AATW had literally no idea how to handle albums at that point. Hell, I don't believe they had ever released a successful studio album when they signed Dannii - even poor tan queen Kelly Llorenna's first album ended up being a greatest hits. AATW might've been a decent option for her to release a featuring track (like Flower Power) or two while she figured out where to move on next, but attaching herself to them was a mistake. She should've kept herself independent at that point and tried to pitch a follow up to other labels.

Posted by: ___∆___ 24th April 2020, 12:04 PM

^^ Huge mistake but I guess I can see why Dannii went with them - they were a successful dance label with access to good artists and remixers, Dannii obviously thought this would be a good move after her success with ‘Neon Nights’.

Their release strategy killed any momentum with Danni immediately - they waited 11(!!) months to follow up her Top 10 ‘You Won’t Forget About Me’ with ‘Perfection’ which reached #11 and then 8 months later ‘So Under Pressure’ arrived and reached #20 then came the 18 month wait for ‘Touch Me Like That’ which reached #46 drama.gif No pop act could survive in those times basically releasing 1 single a year.

Posted by: tommie 24th April 2020, 12:50 PM

Yeah, I mean her two biggest hits from Neon Nights were club hits (WDYLN? and IBTW) and I Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling got into the top five thanks largely to the bootleg - I can certainly see why she thought AATW was a good idea at the time. But as you said - the fact that they had no single ready for post You Won't Forget About Me speaks volumes - when Put The Needle disappointed by entering at #7, London Records had I Begin To Wonder ready to go. Pop artists just don't function the same as dance ones, which is fundamentally what Dannii is even if she ended up pandering a bit to the dance crowd. AATW just had no idea how to handle her or any artist that dared to step outside dance formula, such as K-Llo's excellent Nobody Like You (which I'll post because it's underappreciated).

Posted by: ___∆___ 24th April 2020, 01:38 PM

Kelly Llorenna the ultimate AATW Queen - they let down their female acts badly tbh, Kelly Llorenna, Dannii, Tina Cousins, even Jessica Wright. They seemed to hope they would sell on name with no idea how to actually manage and market them or react when a single didn’t sail into the Top 3 as expected.

Posted by: vibe 24th April 2020, 03:25 PM

AATW has no clue , do you remember they was originally going to go with I Can’t Sleep At Night as a lead single!!

Dannii said on a live chat yesterday that her and Ian Masterson are working on a new version of All I Wanna Do that will be our soon.

She also said she still hopes to release Girl on vinyl !!

Posted by: ___∆___ 24th April 2020, 04:26 PM

She really wants ‘Girl’ on vinyl and I love that she does - she replied to one of my comments a few months ago on insta about it saying she was trying to make it happen.

I remember them wanting ICSAN as they lead and then all the fiasco with ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ that they sent out on promo and then pulled - they was a pure mess for Dannii from start to finish, the only good thing to come out of it was they managed to give Dannii another Top 20 album.

Posted by: Euphorique 24th April 2020, 05:09 PM

ICSAN had some amazing remixes, but the radio version was quite dull. I think that was my problem with her material post NN, with the exception of YWFAM. Just middle of the road dance music, with no lasting impact or replay value.

I forgot about He's The Greatest Dancer - it was supposed to be The Children In Need single before a certain "Baby" stole it from her! So rude. Either way, this was done when you could actually pull singles and not have them chart!

I might have a special hateful place for a certain spice in my heart because of this obvious sabotage of Dannii's career.

HTGD is not my favourite Dannii track but it would have easily been a Top 10 hit with CIN exposure

They literally could have sung anything and it would have got to #1 - everybody wanted a duet back then.

I’m gutted that ‘100 Degrees’ never even made the Top 100 even with the vinyl being released too drama.gif

While Kylie is far bigger in Ozland, she also has lower peaks than in the UK.

There is a poll in the main chart forum for best all star charity single and Dannii is featured as part of The Childliners ‘Gift Of Christmas’ - was a fun pop song with a few lines for Dannii.

The TOTP performance was a bit of a mess with all of them crammed on the stage laugh.gif

I remember at the time thinking it would be #1... however it’s chart run was 9-10-11-15-36-64-out-61.

Just reading over Danniis discogrpahy, jump to the beat was her only top 10 here in Ireland reaching Number 5 and in Australia likewise she only had 1 top 10 hit with Love and kisses number 4. Really disappointed that even the big uk hits such as all i wanna do, who do you love now and i begin to wonder didnt get top 10 in both.

Posted by: ___∆___ 29th April 2020, 09:01 AM

Interesting that she struggled in Ireland too.

The UK really was the only market to take to Dannii’s music career long term it seems.

Same in Germany. Who Do You Love Now was her first chart entry. She finally got attention because of Kylie's no 1 CGYOOMH. Dannii did some promo on German tv while her Love & Kisses era. I still got a tv performance on VCR: She's doing Jump To The Beat all on her own without dancers and a rapper, trying to sell the rap parts by dancing like a freak, but it just didn't work.

Posted by: ___∆___ 3rd May 2020, 11:25 AM

Poor Dannii cry.gif

I think we took to her music career with ease in the UK - I remember the teen press at the time was all over her and it was generally positive that another Minogue would be releasing music.

Posted by: tommie 3rd May 2020, 12:18 PM

I'm surprised they didn't try to push This Is It in mainland Europe to be honest - I remember a rip-off version of her version playing in a commercial for the longest time (the same situation with Bananarama's version of Venus).

Posted by: ___∆___ 4th May 2020, 01:35 PM

^^ Crazy that they didn’t push This Is It with that kind of exposure - especially as it had already proven it could be a hit by going Top 20 in Australian and Ireland and Top 10 in the UK.

About 190k.

If any album release of Dannii's has a chance to hit a new certification it's Hits and Beyond since that's "only" 15k to Silver, but that's still quite a bit to go and I'd assume singles like All I Wanna Do would hit certification before that happened (plus it would depend on where they re-direct her streaming sales).

Posted by: Sacred3 3rd June 2023, 05:01 AM

Ohhh I am curious what singles could hit silver. From the website I only see:

Love and kisses Silver
love and kisses Gold

Neon Nights silver
Neon Nights Gold

I remember that Nathan Webmaster telling me Hits and Beyond went Gold. I guess he lied!

He gave very inflated sales figures - I remember him saying Neon Nights was at 120k (it wasn't - for the longest time it was actually slightly under 100k) and that Love & Kisses and its reissue combined was at 250k.

The closest thing to any certification right now is All I Wanna Do at around 185k (15k to Silver) and Who Do You Love Now? (175k, 25k to Silver); I really wish both could show up more on 90s/00s playlists.

I keep expecting to see one of these pop up in the BPI's certification updates each Friday. For neither of them to be certified, they must have been averaging under 50 units per week since 2009! A shame that 'All I Wanna Do 2020' doesn't get included under the original song's sales.

All I Wanna Do is actually quite low on her most popular list - #6 with 1 476 780 streams and that's worldwide, so I assume the weekly sales are very low! I Begin To Wonder is by far her most popular track with 7 827 468 streams, but at the same time it was released when single sales were hitting lows so last we heard it was at 115k sales (85k sales to Silver). Her second most popular is Who Do You Love Now? with 3 310 194 streams.

I kind of hope that We Could Be The One's success will trigger some of her older tracks to go on playlists because it would obviously help a lot. All I Wanna Do's streams are criminal.

Unfortunately, since Dannii's more interested in doing television I don't think her management will ever focus on pushing her music - otherwise I'd say they'd need to focus on pushing I Begin To Wonder, Who Do You Love Now, All I Wanna Do and This Is It towards playlists. I could see all of them slotting in nicely on throwback lists.

It's crazy really, dannii has the slightest chance of charting even in the lower end of the top 100 which would be a great result for Dannii, interesting to see how it will pan out for the week. Dannii needs to do a Sam Ryder now and release about 10 different versions asap.

The 2020 version is separate unfortunately. I’m pretty convinced they’ve just overlooked the certification for All I Wanna Do because I can’t believe it hasn’t managed to shift 20k in 25 years.

All I Wanna Do is number 1 (first track) on her essential list on Itunes. Surely this helps with streams.

Is there anyone we can contact for its certification!

Shame her team did not add Thinking Bout Us or We Could Be The One to her essential playlist!

Dont Wanna Lose This Groove doesn’t even feature in her essentials. A mash up with Madonna WTF !
