Great idea having all the links to the albums and having threads for each album, il always enjoy an enjoy yourself thread as I just love the album. I was young when it was released and kinda wish I was older when it was so I could enjoy its huge success. I have great memories of the success of the singles but access to info in other countries was impossible to get back then.

Big standsouts from the album, i really wish there was better quality of these available, why why why didnt they make an official release of the anti tour so we could have good quality live versions of these songs.

Love the behind stuff from never to late,NTL is still my fave enjoy yourself single.

Posted by: Dannyboy 7th May 2020, 03:55 PM

Part of my actually prefers this to the debut except for Hand on your heart which I skip, I prefer I wouldn’t change a thing and Never too late. I over dreaming over you and Enjoy Yourself should have been the other singles

That performance of 'I'm Over Dreaming' is what made me really fall for it after not being that familiar with the album at that point. I think the Anti Tour really highlighted how good some of those early songs are by putting them in modern day, live settings. Sometimes it can be easy to overlook them due to now outdated quality.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th May 2020, 05:41 PM

It's a great performance if only we could get better quality video. I think so many kylie songs need to be seen and heard live as its changed my opinion on a few songs. I'm over dreaming over you I have always loved but this live version made me even love it more and same with the title track.

I really expected pete waterman to name drop im over dreaming over you when picking out songs.

My track by track review for 'Enjoy Yourself'

Hand On Your Heart
Kicking off the album in the usual Kylie style with this fantastic lead single which further cemented Kylie at the very top of her game by gaining her 3rd well deserved chart topper. The drum beat rolls and showcases her more mature hip sound, and giving us something a lot more slick than what had gone before. Yet still poppy enough to appeal to appeal to the masses and PWL's target audience.

Wouldn't Change A Thing
This funky summery anthem is single #2, and a fantastic choice to follow the mega smash hit 'HOYH'. Great guitar on the backing track and some cool keyboards on the final chorus's as well as some fun drum machine effects going on, that therefore creates a perfect pop masterpiece and of course yet another well deserved big hit.

Never Too Late
Simple in its construction and executed wonderfully in this gloriously fun pop number that you gotta admit is perfectly catchy, with some glossy production and just all round fun, and follows the previous 2 singles perfectly and still to this day ranks as one of her most memorable singles.

Nothing To Lose
So many tracks on this album could have been singles and here's one of them, with a similar style to the previous tracks and Kylie's subdued vocals in each verse, but becomes more bold as the song goes on. A definite strong moment on this album.

Tell Tale Signs
After 4 upbeat pop anthems, we finally have a ballad and its really nice. With a definite 1930's classic feel to it, a sad little number where Kylie demonstrates the awesome range and power of her voice. a short but very sweet little number.

My Secret Heart
Another slow number that perhaps isn't quite as strong as the previous tracks that's come before, but Kylie's vocals sound really great here as once again gives it everything and pulls off some amazing chords, highlighting just how great a singer she really is.

I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)
The pace really picks up in a really big way, with this thumping number with a very deep bass and a definite more clubby feel to it, with just a hint of some disco in there. Definitely one of the best moments on here and gives us a little hint of what's to come on further albums.

Tears On My Pillow
Back to the ballads now with this cover of Little Anthony and The Imperials 1958 hit was for her debut movie ‘The Delinquents’. Once again her voice shines and the production doesn't stray too far away from the original, but still a rather beautiful sounding song.

Heaven And Earth
Probably the weakest moment on here that doesn't really do much for me to be honest. However we do have some more superb vocals and some soaring music and a long instrumental fade away.

Enjoy Yourself
Back to the dancefloor with this brilliant album closer that ends things on an almighty BANG!, the bass on this song is thumping and continuous with keyboard programming that builds and builds throughout the chorus and by the time the song come to its end, its completely infectious and a riot of sound, this perfectly sets up what's to come on further albums and why wasn't this a single, surely it would have been another huge chart smash and so much lost potential.

Love the track by track reviews, always great to see other people’s perspective of albums I love

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th May 2020, 10:33 AM

Agree with all your opinions here. Heaven and earth is the weakest on the album but still not a bad song either. There def is hints of her future music on some of the tracks. Nothing to lose is a great album track and I prob over look it sometimes.

Posted by: ___∆___ 9th May 2020, 08:17 PM

Ah I love everything about this album and era - Kylie mania was fever pitch and this album was the sound of the year.

I remember back then always wanting ‘Enjoy Yourself’ to be released as a single - such a great song.

I wonder who won the meet Kylie competition that you got an entry form with on the poster that came with the first batch of the album.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 9th May 2020, 09:53 PM

I always wanted enjoy yourself to be a single, back then kylie was on the front cover of every teen pop magazine, had badges, patches you name it, it was a great time to a fan.

Posted by: pippa 10th May 2020, 03:13 PM

Enjoy Yourself would have made a perfect 3rd single following Wouldn't Change A Thing
That said, the album offered a large range of single options that some great songs always had to lose out.
Enjoy Yourself and Light Years both had this issue with choices for singles for which, has made them such wonderful albums to listen to.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 10th May 2020, 03:50 PM

Enjoy yourself is the type of album that fits into today's climate when 5 or 6 singles can work from an album and there is plenty to fit the bill here.

Posted by: pippa 10th May 2020, 04:06 PM

It had the standard of songs to serve up to 6 singles and in today's climate the album would have needed at least 4 more tracks on the album to allow for this.
Different times for music, but, those key songs many fans adored, but did not make it as a single remain just as loved today as the singles themselves.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 10th May 2020, 11:04 PM

Ya songs like enjoy yourself and I'm over dreaming remain very popular and their reception on the anti tour seemed to be really really good.

Posted by: pippa 11th May 2020, 05:44 PM

The style choice of the hat Kylie wears on the cover is questionable.
It was a bad styling choice.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th May 2020, 12:36 AM

Ya its not the best, they had a thing for hats on the first 2 album covers, as much as i love the album im not keen on the cover. I prefer the cover of kylie to enjoy yourself.

Posted by: pippa 13th May 2020, 07:54 PM

Kylie is the better of the two album covers.
In parts, Enjoy Yourself shows small traces of what was to come on Rhythm of Love which is represented through I'm Over Dreaming (Over You).

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 15th May 2020, 11:08 AM

This is literally an album of two halves for me - I like all the upbeat songs, but dislike all of the ballads!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th May 2020, 01:05 PM

As a package though the whole album works for me. I always enjoyed this album but love it even more now as I've listened to it alot in the last while. After years of preferring rhythm of love I def prefer enjoy yourself more now but still love ROL aswell.

Posted by: pippa 15th May 2020, 01:37 PM

On Enjoy Yourself, the ballads are the weaker elements of the album but, remain likeable.
The ballads however, make the uptempo songs really shine.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th May 2020, 02:31 PM

The ballads mix through the album nicely, its standard that kylie has a ballad or 2 on her albums. The ballads in the later years though are far far better than the SAW ballads.

I don't mind the ballads, I'd never listen to them out of choice but they don't disrupt the album experience as much as I'd expect. I think because they're so short I just view them as 'interludes'.

Posted by: pippa 15th May 2020, 07:55 PM

I like the ballads on offer and they get more critique than they deserve.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th May 2020, 08:25 PM

Many of kylies ballads get a hard time and for most they seem to be love or hate songs.

Posted by: vibe 19th May 2020, 05:01 PM

So I am listening to this album for the first time.

It’s not great is it lol

What came first Sonia’s INSLY or I’m Over Dreaming ? They are the same 😉

TOMP which I haven’t played in years I really enjoyed. This should be the last track on the album.

Heaven and Earth is listenable

Enjoy Yourself should open the album. I think I enjoyed this over the other singles!

If i didn’t mention a track it’s because it’s not worth mentioning.

Posted by: pippa 19th May 2020, 05:06 PM

I welcome your praise of the title track but largely have the opposite opinion on the album overall.
It is one of my most highly regarded Kylie albums.
Geat songs aplenty, and big hits.

disappointed you are not impressed with the album as its always been a face of mine as overall i like almost everything on the album. What song is INSLY from Sonia, im trying to work out which it is?

Posted by: vibe 19th May 2020, 06:00 PM

I’ll never stop loving you, did she have any others 😉

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th May 2020, 06:10 PM

Ah i was getting confused as i thought it might be that but its called You'll Never stop from loving you it was the I that was throwing me, sonia had a few hits to be fair and i think her debut album is really good, not as good as enjoy yourself but still very good, i think sonia track came first but there wouldnt have been a huge gap between them either.

Posted by: vibe 19th May 2020, 06:17 PM

Sorry for the error lol

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th May 2020, 06:20 PM

No probs laugh.gif as I said I couldn't work it out was thought it was that song.

From this and her debut which does Kylie appear to prefer.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th May 2020, 12:36 AM

Based on so as she performs I'd say they are equal.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 2nd July 2020, 05:26 PM

Listening to this today magic.gif It's really not a favourite of mine sad.gif Even the best song on the album for me is FAR from being magic. I find it lacks the charm of the debut and the memorable hooks. It's cute enough, and a nice listen but not going to be a favourite of mine.

1. Hand On Your Heart
2. Never Too Late
3. Wouldn't Change a Thing
4. I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)
5. Nothing to Lose
6. Tears On My Pillow
7. Heaven and Earth
8. Enjoy Yourself
9. My Secret Heart
10. Tell Tale Signs

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 2nd July 2020, 06:17 PM

Im so the opposite i think its full of memorable hooks and has equally if not more charm than her debut, our tastes are obviously so dif as im over dreaming over you and enjoy yourself are 2 of my ultimate kylie songs and rank far higher than many of her singles.

Posted by: Liam.k. 2nd July 2020, 07:01 PM

I'm the same as Feel the Fever, I think the high points of the album feel stronger than her debut and definitely has more charm. The ballads do drag it down slightly but they're passable and do allow Kylie use her voice a bit more. 'Never Too Late' is my favourite Kylie song of the 80s and 'I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)' is one of her best album tracks of her PWL years.

I think you'll like 'Rhythm of Love' though, it's generally regarded as her best album with PWL! The strength of the songs takes another step up and resembles the more dance-influenced sound we associate with Kylie in later years, plus there's lots of personality to it.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 2nd July 2020, 07:14 PM

It's so interesting reading that this is generally better received than the debut. Even just looking at the tracklists of the two, the debut seems to consistently decent (with some good and great moments) whereas this is decent with some good. I have listened to the debut a fair bit more than this, so I'll keep listening to this and see if it grows in my affections!

Posted by: Liam.k. 2nd July 2020, 07:52 PM

I can certainly see why her debut would be perceived as stronger, it just comes back to the way I feel about Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'. Also, much like that album, I think some of the post-production spoils it, like her voice has been pitched higher and some of the tracks don't feel as polished as they should be.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 2nd July 2020, 08:04 PM

There are many similarities with enjoy yourself and her debut and i can honestly say i still love both, but there was progress made from her debut to enjoy yourself and it gives the album the edge. Rhythm of love to follow really kept that great momentum going with solid great albums.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 3rd July 2020, 10:38 AM

Been listening on REPEAT today and it is definitely growing on me. 'Heaven and Earth' in particular. I like the album a lot more now, but still a distant second from the debut but I'll accept that I'm alone with that thought tongue.gif

Posted by: pippa 3rd July 2020, 12:32 PM

Enjoy Yourself is the better against her debut but 50% of the fans would disagree.
I see Enjoy Yourself as Kylie's second best album of her career with Light Years first.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 3rd July 2020, 01:31 PM

I've always loved her first 3 album but for years rhythm of love was my fave album until light years came along but over the last 10 -15 years enjoy yourself is level with ROL.

Ya im glad they misread it aswell as i much prefer enjoy yourself as a title, nice story to read as i hadnt heard that before.

Posted by: Liam.k. 7th June 2022, 07:59 PM

I agree! Not all songs include the title in the lyrics anyway. It also shows what a machine SAW was with album packaging being produced before the records were even finished, or maybe that's the way most album process went, especially if they wanted to release in time for the Christmas period.

Such a great kylie time, great memories although hand on your heart due to a mix up was robbed of making a number 1 debut which was a big thing back then.

Posted by: ___∆___ 26th April 2023, 04:07 PM

^^ I would have been more frustrated if the barcode issue had robbed it totally of being #1 - would have been nice for it to achieve 2 weeks at the top but at least it managed it the following week.

Posted by: Liam.k. 26th April 2023, 04:23 PM

The retail price for the cassette was lower than chart rules allowed so some sales were disqualified - it would have debuted at #1 otherwise and Kylie would have been the first female to have a single debut at #1.

'Hand On Your Heart' isn't one I really return to but it is very feel-good, the epitome of the 'smiley Kylie' 80s PWL era.

Posted by: Jessie Where 26th April 2023, 05:00 PM

Still, at least it did sneak a week in.

Great update on a classic Kylie album track! I hear a bit of ‘Groovejet’ in those opening beats too.

I’ve been going through Kylie remixes on Spotify and came across this. Anyone know the story behind this being remixed in 2002? It’s very ‘Fever’ influenced, I like it!

One of my most memorable albums ever. Charlene was EVERYWHERE in 1989, wasn't she?!

This album solidified her legit entry as an honorary Brit - she was on all the UK talk shows, she had about 9-10 months of Neighbours (in the UK) left.... listening to this album overall takes me back to those amazing days. I'd play this and Jason's "10 good reasons" back to back.... SAW were peaking. Lovely times.

As an album, I think it's dated better than the 1st. The first 3 singles, "over dreaming" and the title track are still favourites.

Posted by: Padamic_Tension 11th July 2024, 08:37 PM

I do prefer enjoy yourself to her debut but I love that aswell, I think both albums have dated well and as I have said before I'm glad to be old enough to have enjoyed the kylie mania back then as it was something else. At the time I was a big fan of Jason's music aswell.

Ah yes, forgot about that! Would have been nice to have had some more new remixes but I guess the album was essentially just a PWL cash-in on Kylie's second wave of chart success.

Think Kylie cost them quite a bit with Rhythm of Love and LGTI so the 1992 and 2002 reissue helped them turn a profit. Completely capitalised on her Fever success with the 2002 release, shame the sales weren’t combined, think both are platinum. 2002 also came with a companion DVD too. Have it somewhere!

Does anyone remember the poster you got with it where you could send it off somewhere for a chance to meet kylie? I still have it from my vinyl at the time. Wonder if she'd honour it now? laugh.gif

Yes i remember this, i sent mine off but never heard anything back although i was reliant on my mother actually sending it for me so i like to believe she did biggrin.gif

It's almost been one year since 'Kylie' (debut) reissue on vinyl was announced (16th August 2023). I wonder if we're going to get 'Enjoy Yourself' for its 35th anniversary or not?

Posted by: Padamic_Tension 5th August 2024, 04:58 PM

I really hope it does but not sure it will happen as there aren't even any rumours.

They really should go ahead and release it

I imagine there will be a vinyl release, they must have been pleased with how the debut sold - wasn’t it #3 on the Monday midweeks?

Posted by: Padamic_Tension 8th August 2024, 09:59 AM

Ya it was 3 in the first update which was a huge surprise.

Really hope we get an EY re-issue - we’ve had multiple CD reissues over the years and the Cherry Red picture disc Boxset but would love to see it get a proper vinyl reissue.

I’m sure BMG will wheel it out at some point as they own the rights to Kylie’s PWL albums (as well as the Deconstruction ones).

The album starts really well but I'm finding the ballads to drag the album down a fair bit, much more than they have done in the past. Kylie sings them well, but they're out of place on here. I'd replace them with the two B-sides and add 'Especially for You' in there as well. 'Tears On My Pillow' stays for being a #1.

1. Hand On Your Heart
2. Wouldn't Change a Thing
3. Never Too Late
4. Nothing to Lose
5. I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)
6. Especially for You
7. Just Wanna Love You
8. Tears On My Pillow
9. We Know the Meaning of Love
10. Enjoy Yourself

Some other territories got EFY as part of the album, guessing PWL wanted to steer people towards Jason’s album in the UK as it was his debut?

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th August 2024, 05:29 PM

Yeah the North American edition has 'Especially for You' as track 6 between 'Tell-Tale Signs' and 'My Secret Heart'.

I wonder will they eventually try and get the parlophone ones or would they be too costly.

BMG seem to buy whole businesses/back catalogue - that’s how they acquired PWL and Deconstruction, it’s nice that they have so much of her back catalogue.

Guessing the Parlophone ones are too valuable to them so in turn too expensive for anyone else to buy.

Id love bmg to eventually get them base don kylies stays with them, at the moment i dont see why she shouldnt as i think if one labels owns all the right etc it gives more options for possible rarities releases etc which is something i have really wanted from Kylie for a long time.
For now thought im just hoping we will get an announcement on Enjoy yourself getting an anniversary release.

Posted by: pippa 11th August 2024, 05:54 PM

Enjoy Yourself could achieve the same success as the anniversary release for her debut.

Posted by: Padamic_Tension 1st September 2024, 09:25 AM

I'm really hoping we will hear something about this soon, and hopefully it actually happens.

Posted by: ___∆___ 1st September 2024, 12:07 PM

BMG seem pretty good at re-issuing the Kylie catalogue they control for anniversaries etc., and K88 was a decent success for a low key release so hopefully they are working away on EY.

My hopes are they saw how did the debut did and will follow the same formula.
