Sooooooo underrated, not a lot a of obvious singles though which is the issue, finer feelings is 😍

Posted by: Monzo 7th May 2020, 04:24 PM

Too Much Of A Good Thing, Let's Get to It, Right Here Right Now and Live and Learn all had 12" versions, but why? Did Stock & Waterman plan to release all these songs as singles?

Posted by: pippa 7th May 2020, 04:32 PM

The album has a tone of lostness.
The album lacks direction which alone was signified in the singles from the album.
It has its share of highlights but the audience for Kylie was in decline and SAW weren't best placed to reverse it.

Posted by: ___∆___ 7th May 2020, 06:15 PM

Not my favourite album by any means but I love it for what it is. The artwork is one of my favourites though and it works SO well on the Cherry Red vinyl box reissue.

I can still remember being horrified that a Kylie album could enter at #15 and only spend a few weeks in the charts drama.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th May 2020, 06:24 PM

I'm not sure what was more shocking for me, this missing top 10, word is out missing the top 10 or some kind of bliss missing the top 20. All were awful disappointing times. It's not my fave kylie album either but I do like a good few songs on it. Word is out took a fair bit of time to grow on me, finer feelings I can take it or leave but it's always stayed fairly popular with fans.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th May 2020, 07:08 PM

I know its not that popular here but i love i guess i like it like that and love this performance of it as there isnt too many performances of it, when i bough the album i really wanted this to be a single.

Posted by: aeroco 7th May 2020, 07:18 PM

My favourite of the early albums.

Posted by: pippa 7th May 2020, 08:51 PM

There are sounds of the older PWL sound pre their commercial success filtered in parts of the Let's Get To It album.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th May 2020, 10:06 PM

Another what if case, if GMJALMT or IYWWMN were the lead singles would the album have done any better. Word is out back then was a flop by kylies previous standards so it was a really bad start for the album.

I doubt it, they did well themselves but they didn't really do much for the album, so I can't see that changing if either were leads: 'If You Were With Me Now' was being pushed immediately after the album release and it still went 15-18-27-48 and 'Give Me Just a Little More Time' only got the album to #50 during the post-Christmas slump. They're also not the best representative of the album either.

I think 'Word is Out' was the best choice for lead single as it was the most pop track that still represented the sound of the album. I'm not really sure what went wrong other than it being a further move away from what people expected from Kylie - if they didn't take to Rhythm of Love, they weren't going to take to this one.

I know fans have suggested 'Too Much of a Good Thing' or 'Right Here, Right Now' as good choice for lead single and I do agree in terms of them representing the album and being catchy, but I don't see how they would have done any better than 'Word is Out'.

It's a shame people just didn't take to this album because I actually think it's her second best from PWL.

She talks briefly about 'Word is Out' and its lack of success here.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th May 2020, 10:29 AM

I can see there point on too much of a good thing, I dont think it would have done any worse than word is out but prob wouldnt have been the big hit that was needed.

Posted by: Dannyboy 8th May 2020, 10:35 AM

I love word is out, I don’t get the hate, I really don’t

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th May 2020, 11:19 AM

I really like word is out but it took me a few years to appreciate it.

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th May 2020, 11:49 AM

Am I right in saying the Summer Breeze mix of 'Word is Out' was the main version in Australia? I see it made #10 there, could that mix have helped in the UK?

Posted by: Dannyboy 8th May 2020, 02:29 PM

I don’t think so, other than the start and a few other other parts it’s not that different

Posted by: SamJudd 8th May 2020, 02:50 PM

May as well round of her PWL days with 'LGTI' =

Word Is Out
Starting things off with the usual lead single, and this shows Kylie heading towards the New Jack Swing sound, with a very different style and production to anything she's done before, but still very much a pop number, with a chorus awash with a fanfare of trumpets and some decent backing vocals. I think that this will always be labelled as that one that broke Kylie's run of 13 top 10 hits, and while I wouldn't call it terrible, its not all that great either, just okay, a decent album track, but lacks that something special and the attempt to keep up with the sounds of 1992, automatically dates it.

Give Me Just A Little More Time
Kylie's cover of the Chairman of the Board hit is a joyful affair and her fantastic tongue rolling vocals are a highlight. Like Kylie's other cover versions from this time period, they do not challenge the originals in terms of quality, however this is definitely the best of them in this rather stylish 90's update of a classic 70's track. This became the big hit of the album when released as the 3rd single and rightfully so and yeah this was a safe option to guarantee a hit, but it worked and while it may never stand as one of her best, its a fun little time capsule.

Too Much of a Good Thing
Back to more funky dance pop with this number with some interesting samples that works really well with the song, with soft understated vocals by Kylie in this hip and fun tune, and again a very different sound that doesn't really sound like a Kylie song at all, but its fantastic nonetheless and a definite album highlight. Maybe this would have worked better as the lead single and maybe could have continued her top 10 run a little longer.

Finer Feelings
Things take a slower pace now with this racy little number and shows a much more mature side to Kylie, and when released as the 4th single, it was was given a major overhaul and reproduction by Brothers In Rhythm. which really elevated it to a much higher level and turned it into a more classy dance tune and the whole thing comes across as really quite sophisticated and was perhaps a precursor to the type of tracks which appeared on her next album.

If You Were With Me Now
A nice Disney styled gorgeous ballad with American soul singer Keith Washington. Co-written by Kylie and Keith and with superbly emotional vocals from both sides. This put things back on track for Kylie by putting her back in the top 5 after the lead underperformed. Yes this is very schmaltzy and cheesy, but definitely shows more maturity.

Let's Get To It
The title track comes next and quite down tempo with a very soulful feel to it, along with a 90's groove behind the whole thing. Not one of my faves on here and at nearly 5 mins long, it goes on a tad bit long.

Right Here Right Now
The pace picks up with this pop/dance track, with a thumping beat from the offset and also benefits from some great backing vocals. Another good quality album track and a fine example of dance-floor Kylie.

Live And Learn
Another pop tune that's very uplifting and so simple in its design and execution. An okay little number nothing all that special though.

No World Without You
A really nice heartfelt guitar ballad dominated by Kylie’s superbly tender voice that opens up in the chorus to show its true strength. This is a fine example of how diverse in sound this album really is.

I Guess I Like It Like That
Ending the album on a much harder dance sound, more club music than commercial dance and twice as long than any other track on here, 6mins in length, making this somewhat of a departure and yet its very cheesy, but hell of a lot of fun with something that really pops on the dance-floor with quite a few samples and surprisingly the whole thing blends well as a cohesive, contemporary track. Which makes this an interesting way to end the album.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th May 2020, 03:13 PM

I would disagree about word is out but many would agree with you. If you were with me now is often overlooked and forgotten, plus kylie never goes back to the song which doesn't help but it does have that disney feel to it, it was a great relief at the time it going top 5 after word is out only making number 16.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 13th July 2020, 06:36 PM

I'll hold off doing an album track rank because I have found that my tastes and ordering changes the more time I give the albums. But regardless, I listened to this the other day and again today and well.. It is quite comfortably my least favourite of the first 4 albums so far laugh.gif

One of the issues I have with this is how mismatch it is. The first 3 songs for example are all so different and yet none of their differences are particularly welcoming or strong or memorable. However when it gets to 'Finer Feelings' I feel like she really awakens and it's the first great moment on the album and then we get the dirge that follows it.

The title track is fun if a little repetitive, as is 'Right Here, Right Now' but again there is a distinct lack of spark and charm to the songs which I have found to be the case throughout it. These and 'Live and Learn' are a fun trio though in the second half of the album.

Hmm, not looking as forward to replaying this over and over like I did with the 3 albums that come before it but maybe things will grow? We shall see ~

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 13th July 2020, 06:43 PM

It's a very mismatch album overall and it can also be clearly seen with the singles aswell as they are so different. I dont dislike the album but I dontvrevisit it too much either.

Posted by: pippa 13th July 2020, 06:54 PM

Rhythm of Love delivered so strongly which made the follow up hard. Leaving the standard of Rhythm of Love aside, Let's Get To It is an album largely full of, can do better.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 13th July 2020, 09:41 PM

lets get to it could have been so much more but pwl had passed their creativity peak at that point and it was right that kylie took the decision to move on, i cant remember but did kylie announce she was parting ways before the release or lets get to it or was it much later.

Yeah I completely agree, it's such a great pop song, and I remember being shocked at how badly it flopped at the time. Maybe it was just a bit too different, and there was just a bit too much going on in the song, kinda too clever for its own good if you know what I mean?

Finer Feelings is a proper gem too, and the Brothers in Rhythm mix transcended it to a 10/10 wub.gif

Overall though, I do think it was definitely the weakest of the PWL albums, although it would have been impossible to sustain that level of success for more than 2 or 3 albums anyway.

Posted by: HausofGhibli 19th July 2020, 02:56 PM

My rank of the album:

1. Finer Feelings
2. Too Much of a Good Thing
3. Word is Out
4. Live and Learn
5. Let's Get to It
6. Right Here, Right Now
7. Give Me Just a Little More Time
8. I Guess I Like It Like That
9. No World Without You
10. If You Were With Me Now (with Keith Washington)

Still finding this to be the weakest of the first four albums by some distance! 'Finer Feelings' is the only essential track for me, with the next 6 being nice enough~

Album ranking
01. Rhythm of Love
02. Kylie
03. Enjoy Yourself
04. Let's Get To It

Posted by: Dannyboy 19th July 2020, 03:57 PM

This album is so underrated but the fact you can rank If you were with me now last is beyond me 😂

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th July 2020, 05:33 PM

It is her weakest pwl album but I really like I guess I like it like that and I think if you were me now is great.

Posted by: pippa 19th July 2020, 10:19 PM

If You Were With Me Now comes nowhere close to the worst offering on Let's Get To It.

HMV seem to have managed to secure the Cherry Red expanded edition of ‘Lets Get To It’ - it’s been out of print and OOS most places for a while (And currently listed for £49.99 on eBay mad.gif ) so grab a copy if you need one - https://store.hmv.com/store/music/cd/let-s-get-to-it

Easily Kylie's worst performing studio album overall, missing the Top 10 in both the UK and Australia. Is it her worst album though?

Posted by: ___∆___ 14th October 2021, 06:56 AM

My least favourite Kylie album - it’s has some great tracks but feels all over the place like they changed direction with it multiple times whilst making it.

I love the artwork though.

I remember being horrified at the time that it charted so low.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 14th October 2021, 08:29 AM

I was so disappointed with its chart position aswell at the time, its by far my least fave pwl album but it's not my least overall, I prefer it to km 94, kiss me once and kylie Christmas but I think let's get to it showed that pwl werent quiet sure what to do with kylie anymore as the album had so much going on sound wise and the singles alone show that as they all had such a different sound. Apart from finer feelings kylie doesnt revisit the album that much.

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th February 2022, 06:45 PM

Forgot to post a couple of weeks back that it was 10 years since the K25 celebrations officially kicked off with this stunning orchestral version of 'Finer Feelings', recorded at Abbey Road Studios. I had never really took much interest in the original but this one truly captivated me. It made me really recognise and appreciate the tone of Kylie's vocals and I thought this style of music suited her so well. I also love BrunetteKylie.

Posted by: ___∆___ 29th October 2022, 11:53 AM

By far my favourite album but I love the artwork, with the success of IP there is definitely scope for a proper LGTI re-release.

The Cherry Red Boxsets were incredible - Vinyl Picture Disc, CD, CD/DVD, Book etc., but was £100 and released before the big boom of vinyl (and also wildly sought after now).

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 29th October 2022, 01:00 PM

There definitely is potential, I like let's get to it in parts but by far my least fave pwl album, I do prefer it though to jylie Christmas, body language, kiss me once, km94 and body language.
I think if it got the vinyl treatment at the right time it could repeak, it's 31 tears old just gone but I don't think sn album these days needs a special anniversary to get the vinyl treatment.

Posted by: aeroco 29th October 2022, 03:27 PM

Very pleased I bought LGTI on the special edition expanded CD and later the vinyl box set for just £29.99!

All 4 are gorgeous in fact I’ll have a look at them later.

They should repress LGTI first on 180g turquoise vinyl to maximise its chart re entry potential….maybe reissue one per quarter.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 29th October 2022, 08:19 PM

One per quarter would be good or even 1 every 6 months until tgey are all available.

Gives us chance to save, these vinyl reissues are becoming more expensive as demand rises. Of course sometimes they over supply so bargains can be had but it’s a risky strategy. Though it does make me chuckle how discounted Adele’s 30 is now….bet there’s loads of unsold stock.

If they get released with a a decent price that doesnt fleece us fans id be happy to see them get released.

I think Team Kylie are well aware of not rinsing them fanbase too much - we have IP, then KC and then they’ll want all the coins saved for K16.

Agree with some of the vinyl discounts - they were selling the Amazon exclusive Adele vinyl for £11 the other week kink.gif

Interesting to see how many formats the new album will get, maybe let's get to it vinyl in 2024.

Adele’s CD IS £2.40 or something ridiculous on Amazon…I’m sure they made a profit because she still sold well but so many stream these days instead. The physical market is limited and it’s mainly dedicated fans buying vinyl and CD. Though at least vinyl is growing.

Yep Kylie can’t keep releasing too much too quick, IP has done well because it’s special to us….KC I think they can get away with, good it has vinyl availability each year they don’t need to worry too much about selling all the stock in one year….but as we have seen with GLE, ID, and Extended, they produced a bit too much probably because of how all the Disco special vinyl was snapped up.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 30th October 2022, 02:52 PM

The growth of the vinyl has been great to see as its getting more and more popular, I wonder will the cd format ever experience a rise in fortunes. I'm still a huge physical fan myself, I just love having a physical version of an album and I would like to keep building my kylie vinyl collection.
I do agree the IP felt special as we wanted it for so long plus it was a kylie album many of us felt got a raw deal so it's chart performance last week felt that bit extra special.

Posted by: HeadlessPostman 5th November 2022, 04:23 PM

Let’s Get To It is such a fantastic club album which is especially fascinating because it’s a made by a girl who just three years previous was singing about being Lucky Lucky Lucky in a bath.

She’d absorbed one of the most interesting moments in club culture, London in the early 90s, and insisted in finally being given the chance to get in a room with Mike Stock and make an album she would want to listen to.

I suppose it’s because she perceives the album wasn’t a huge hit, but it’s a shame it hasn’t had more love. It was the first record where she really settled down with one other person for three months, going into the same studio day in day out, the longest time by far that she’d continuously spent writing and recording an album up to that moment (weirdly ROL, and maybe even Kylie and Enjoy Yourself were made over longer periods because there were greater spaces between recording, but when you condense time she in the studio LGTI had much more time spent on it by Kylie.)

Moreover, a lot of people miss that she very likely crowrote No World Without You about Michael, and Mike Stock wrote Word Is Out about the situation leading to their spilt. She was going through intense heartbreak still which she hid so well from the public too, which I’m sure had a huge impact on how she decided to present herself for that album as well.

As much as I find Kylie branching out to the US for Rhythm Of Love a great step forward, I think LGTI is far more interesting and the results all the more intriguing, even if Mike Stock wasn’t as lucky that time in writing four absolutely perfect singles as with ROL.

Posted by: Liam.k. 6th November 2022, 12:58 AM

I'm a fan of 'Let's Get to It' too, I think 'Rhythm of Love' is easily the best of the PWL albums but I definitely prefer this album to her first two. I like the exploration of club music mixed with more soulful moments, I think that idea works for the most part (less so 'If You Were With Me Now' and 'No World Without You', but songs like 'Finer Feelings' and the title track work nicely next to the likes of 'Right Here Right Now' and 'Live & Learn'). I think what the album lacks in big pop moments like on the previous album, it makes up for in the subtle hooks of the different grooves and melodies; a lot of these songs really stick in my head after listening.

Posted by: ___∆___ 14th April 2024, 06:27 PM

32 (!) years since the 4the and final single from LGTI ‘Finer Feelings’ was released wub.gif

Absolutely loved the song then and now - it flopped in Australia (#60) and just missed the Top 10 here (#11).

I have got to like finer feelings more over the years and like it way more now than back in the day. Looking back now finer feelings was a stepping stone to km94 as I think it wouldn't sound out of place on that album.

This! One of the highlights from the album for me and definitely shows Kylie in her grown up era.

Posted by: aeroco 14th April 2024, 07:38 PM

The BIR remix led her to Confide in Me…one of her most accomplished singles. Finer Feelings definitely the least pop of all her PWL singles.

Finer Feeling with most of the Lets Get To It album really showed a completely different side to the talents of Pwl team.

Posted by: Padamic Tension 16th April 2024, 07:31 PM

It was a very different album for pwl and the same could be said for lets get to it, i wonder had kylie stayed with pwl what kind of sound that album number 5 would have had as after a very different direction and many would say huge development with rhythm of love and lets get to it, it went full circle back the way with what kind of fool and celebration to promote the greatest hits album.

I always think it must have been much to Kylie’s dismay going with the very PWL sound of WKOF and then ending her time with them with ‘Celebration’ - at that point she probably wanted to see her contract done with so she could move on.

I remember being horrified at the time that ‘Celebration’ entered at #20 and stayed there for 2 weeks before free falling.

Posted by: Padamic Tension 16th April 2024, 09:12 PM

I'd say at the time those 2 songs were against her will and she just done them to fulfill the contract, I think I've read posts before here saying kylie isn't a WKOF fan herself so maybe that's the reason, celebration she obviously likes as it's got more than it's fair share of live performances from her. I was the same as you re it only making number 20 and out of the top 40 after week 2.
Both WKOF and celebration along with the let's get to it singles we're a strange time as her single success was so up and down but it was clear to be seen her popularity was falling.
Let's get to it completly missing the top 10 albums and not even close to making it was a pure sign kylie had made the right decision to move on.
Her greatest hits though going number 1 after that felt great though as it showed there was still plenty of love still out there for her.

Posted by: pippa 16th April 2024, 11:20 PM

It raises the question does Kylie ever change her opinion on previous material.
If Kylie was to perform songs such as What Kind of Fool, If You Were With me Now, Word is Out etc would she find a new love for songs she now clearly has moved away from.
Songs such as the above are rarely acknowledged by Kylie if ever and Lets Get To It and Kiss Me Once appear to be her two albums she has distanced herself from.
