really looking forward to finding out who sent what.
Was worrying this was about to be a painful experience with how bad the site lag was for a couple of hours but looks like it's mostly cleared up now in time for this, hope it'll stay that way!
Hoping I can get both my first top 10 and my first non bottom 5 finish (which are of course the same thing in this particular contest). x
I feel like there's a good chance my 12 wins this time!
I did consider postponing this but it seems to be a bit quicker now.
I'm cautiously optimistic of a top 10 finish here
After missing the top 20 in my last 5 song contests (BJSC 156 & 157, the spin-off, Unknown Pleasures & Club Bizarre), at least that run will end tonight I've finished 11th, 2nd & 6th in these retro contests which I guess just leaves 4th out of the 'unlucky' positions, but I'd be very happy to be as high as that!
I'll post the votes in order of receipt and a scoreboard after every two votes.
So we start with WoW73...........
1. WoW73
Betty Davis was an American funk rock singer and model (not to be confused with the actress Bette Davis whose eyes were the subject of the Kim Carnes song). 'If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up' was the opening track on her eponymous 1973 debut album.
2. Chez Wombat
Marquee Moon is the title track from New York band Television's debut album, released in 1977. As a single, it reached number 30 in the UK. The group split up just a year later. They reformed in 1991. Lead singer Tom Verlaine died earlier this year.
I was already introduced to the Television song from being an RIP slot during the weekly SyncTube sessions earlier in the year but it was good to hear it again, great song.
I'll just say I preferred WoW's retro pick in the current BJSC to this one

15. 0 Television - Marquee Moon......Chez Wombat
Clout take an early lead with Rainbow and The Moody Blues just behind. The only two songs not to score belonged to the first two voters so every song eligible for both votes is already off the mark.
I did have a sneaking suspicion that Television might be Chez! Great choice.
3. Jade
Serge Gainsbourg is best known for his 1969 number 1 single 'Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus' with Jane Birkin and she sings vocals on this track as well. It's from his 1971 concept album 'Histoire de Melody Nelson' which is about the relationship between a middle aged man and a 15 year old girl he meets after knocking her off her bicycle while driving his Rolls Royce. 'Cargo Culte' closes the album with the man lamenting Melody's death in a plane crash. The album's sound went on to influence many artists from the 1990s.
I discovered Marquee Moon when I made a playlist of the top rated top 40 hit on rateyourmusic.com for every year (it may have been on my 1001 songs playlist as well), and I couldn't not go with a ten minute song in a Rollo contest
Rainbow was an amazing discovery, hyped to see who sent it!
Histoire de Melody Nelson is such a dark, disturbing and intriguing concept album. Sonically it sounds so ahead of its time for a 1971 release, with proto trip-hop sounds - apparently Portishead were influenced by it. I feel like that probably wasn't too hard to guess for me as both Jane Birkin and Serge by extension appeared in one of my posts in the 'most played of 2023' thread not too long ago, after returning to both discographies in more depth after Jane's recent passing. Thank you for the points so far
I did already know Serge Gainsbourg was Jade's entry because I knew she'd previously confirmed it for the BJSC spinoff before changing and sending it here instead cool to hear another song from him besides the obvious one though and it is another great track ~
4. Brer
Xarhanga were a Portuguese rock band who emerged while their country was under the rule of the conservative Estado Novo dictatorship which made it difficult for them to reach their intended audience. Acid Nightmare from 1973 is one of just two singles released by them.
My entry sponsored by /r/listentothis again, this time searching the phrase 'psychedelic rock' (inspired by 'The Four Horsemen' in BJSC) and just listening to songs with year tags from the 70s, hence it being something very obscure again. (shame this band have so few songs as I do really love this one, my fave song I've sent to one of these yet)
Ty Chez and Jerd for the pointage so far, yay for having a medal already x

Rainbow take the lead now while Yes move up from 5th to 2nd and early leaders Clout drop to 3rd. Joy Division are up 7 places and Television climb from bottom place to 7th.
5. King Rollo
'Close To The Edge' is the title track from Yes' fifth album, released in 1972, and taking up the whole of side 1. It features Jon Anderson on lead vocals, Steve Howe on lead guitar, Chris Squire on bass guitar, Rick Wakeman on keyboards and Bill Bruford on drums, making his last appearance before being replaced by Alan White for the next album. Rick Wakeman's legendary pipe organ section was recorded at St Giles-without-Cripplegate church in London. The group are still going and released their 23rd album this year. Steve Howe is the only member from the 'Close To The Edge' line-up who is still in the band. Jon Anderson continues to sing the songs of Yes, including 'Close To The Edge', backed either by The Paul Green Rock Academy or The Band Geeks.
Would have been shocking if Yes was anyone other than Rollo but a great entry, I've had quite mixed reactions to your retro prog entries but this one is the best one you've sent to date quite easily I think.
Rainbow already having 3 12s ty for a few more points too x
Nice find Bré! Very close to an exact point swap, thanks *.*
Epic entry there Rollo, the first of my medals to be revealed so far. I did think that one was probably you as I know you're a Yes fan and, well, that song length cheers for the points too.
6. AH Gold
I'm Just a Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band) is taken from the Moody Blues' eighth album, 'Seventh Sojourn', released in 1972. The song was written in response to some of the their hippie fans, who treated them as spiritual leaders due to the philosophical themes of many of their lyrics. As a single, it got to number 12 in the US but only number 36 in the UK. After a world tour to support the album, the group went on a hiatus which lasted until 1978. They finally disbanded in 2018. Singer Justin Hayward has recently announced a UK tour for March next year where he'll no doubt perform many of the Moody Blues' best known songs.

With a third 12 point score, Rainbow extend their lead by four more points. Joy Division are now their closest challengers, moving up from 4th to 2nd while 12 points from AH Gold keep Clout in third place. T Rex and Television are both up two places into the top 5 while my own entry by Yes plummets from 2nd place to 8th and Betty Davis is still waiting for her first point.
Thanks AH Gold, I see we have an exact point swap! The Moody Blues paid off well for me in the last BJSC Worldvision spin-off (after I was assigned Birmingham ) so I hope they do well here too, they're consistently great.
7. JulianT
Montrose were an American band named after their founder Ronnie Montrose. 'Bad Motor Scooter' is taken from their eponymous 1973 debut album. It was written by their lead singer Sammy Hagar who went on to replace David Lee Roth as the frontman of Van Halen. Ronnie Montrose died in 2012.
Oooooh thanks for the medal Julian
Very good start for Rainbow so far ;o would be here for that one winning, was my silver medal.
8. Dobbo
Rainbow were an Anglo American rock group formed in 1975 by former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. 'Stargazer' is from their second album, 'Rising', released in 1976, with Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals and Cozy Powell on drums. By the time Rainbow had their top 10 hits, 'Since You Been Gone' and 'All Night Long', in 1979 and 1980 respectively, Dio had been replaced by Graham Bonnet as the lead singer.
Another good tune from The Moody Blues, after years of only knowing the one obvious song from them it's been good to discover a few more recently!
And ooh was curious to discover who was behind Rainbow - absolutely fantastic choice Dobbo, seems like a bit of a lost early heavy metal classic (or perhaps not so lost as it does have quite a healthy play count on Spotify lol but it was new to me), great to see it doing so well so far. Thanks for another medal as well + Julian and AH Gold for some more points

Rainbow extend their lead from 12 to 20 points despite only one of the last two voters being able to vote for them. They now have four 12 point scores. Joy Division only received 4 points from the last two so they now share 2nd place with The Babys, who move up from 6th place, and Clout. Only six points separate the songs from 2nd to 10th so it's still unclear who Rainbow's closest challengers are going to be. At the bottom of the scoreboard, Betty Davis finally gets picked up with two points from Dobbo.
Fantastic entry, Dobbo glad you were a fan of 'Cargo Culte', also.
Dobbo with a 20 point lead while 2nd-10th are separated by only 6 points
9. jimwatts
Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook had been inspired to form Joy Division after attending a concert by the Sex Pistols in 1976. 'She's Lost Control' is taken from their 1979 debut album, 'Unknown Pleasures'. It was also the B side of the UK release of their single, 'Atmosphere'.
Thanks for the points so far, especially Jade for the gold and AH for the silver!
As I didn't go to the listenthrough, I wasn't aware of any buzz around the Rainbow song, but it did take me aback when I heard it as I only knew 'Since You've Been Gone' by them previously! Would be an inspired winner if that's how it stays...
10. Popchartfreak
The Babys are a British group formed in 1975. 'Isn't It Time' is a single taken from their 1977 album 'Broken Heart'. It was a top 20 hit in the US and a number 1 single in Australia but only reached number 45 in the UK. The lead singer at the time was John Waite who went on to have a big solo hit with 'Missing You' in 1984. The Babys split up in 1981. Two of the original members revived the group in 2013.

Rainbow see their lead slashed from 20 points down to just 3 after receiving only three points from the last two voters. With a 12 and a 10, the Moody Blues move up from 5th to 2nd place. A third score of 12 points keeps Clout in contention while T Rex and Television both climb two places. Are the other ten songs too far behind now to make up the gap?
Ty John :3
The Joy Division song was good but wasn't quite as instantly in love with it as I hoped I'd be, would probably be a grower with more listens though!
Oh The Moody Blues suddenly catching up quite a bit, still a competition on our hands then!
Ah so it was Jim behind my favourite *.* it may not have been a discovery but I wholeheartedly approve of Joy Division turning up here <3 (not quite in Unknown Pleasures )
Thanks John!

Johnny Cash has sold more than 90 million records worldwide. 'I Will Rock And Roll With You' is the second track from his 58th album, 'Gone Girl', released in 1978.
12. dandy*
T Rex were formed in London in 1967 (as Tyrannosaurus Rex). 'Cosmic Dancer' is the second track on their number 1 album, 'Electric Warrior', from 1971.

The Moody Blues took the lead after Wardy's vote but no points from Dandy mean that Rainbow go back to the top of the scoreboard. With 15 points from the last two voters, Television move up from 5th place to join Clout on 64 points. 16 points for The Babys put them in with an outside chance along with T Rex and Joy Division.
Dobbo *.* Hope it can hold on to the win, like a lost Led Zeppelin classic.
Close up top, but pleased to have been in all but one set of votes so far! (and a 12 just now woop *.)
(@jim, Blitzkrieg Bop was actually my second choice for this too! Needed more punk in this x)
Thanks Dandy may have dodged a bullet for BJSC if this ends up finishing bottom 5
Thanks dandy* for another silver!
That 'unlucky' 4th is starting to look a stretch for me
13. fiesta
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were formed in Glasgow in 1972. 'Vambo Marble Eye' is taken from their second album, 'Next...', released in 1973. The group went on to have top 20 hits with 'The Boston Tea Party' and a cover of Tom Jones' 'Delilah'. Alex Harvey died in 1982 at the age of 46.
'Cosmic Dancer' like 'Marquee Moon' I was already introduced to from the weekend SyncTube sessions but was happy to hear again too!
Looks pretty touch and go for me getting top 10 oops. If I can't even do it in a contest with only 15 entries I have a feeling it's just never going to happen thanks dandy* for a mealworm x
edit: ooh yay a gold medal, that helps out nicely, thank you fiesta! *.* think I recall really liking the instrumental of your entry.
14. Addy!
Clout were a female rock group from South Africa. They appeared last year in the Pop Forum Song Contest, finishing in 16th place, with their song 'Save Me'. Under Fire was the follow-up single to that one.
I’ve been getting mostly 3s, 2s and 1s - though not complaining after the last contest haha.
Thanks Wardy, fiesta and Dobbo for the bigger scores and congrats Dobbo on a brilliant entry!
Aside from the sin of rhyming 'fire' with 'desire' another very good song from Clout after also being a fan of their PFSC entry, nice choice Addy (+ thank you for some more highish points yay!)

There is a new leader. 18 points from the last two votes for the Moody Blues give them a nine point lead over Rainbow while Television move into 3rd place above Clout who are fading a bit now. 12 points from fiesta help Xarhanga move up from 10th to 7th and 12 points from Addy more than double Betty Davis' points total.
There are still two votes to come, coming next is our mystery guest voter.
Who could it be?
15. Doctor Blind
(guest voter)
^ sorry Colm!
Thanks Doctor B for parachuting in another silver! If my quick maths is correct, that puts me 5th and within 4 points of that 4th spot...
16. Ansel
Serú Girán were an Argentine rock group formed in 1978 and made up of musicians who had already been part of other bands. Viernes, 3AM is taken from their second album 'La Grasa de las Capitales'. The track was banned from being played on the radio as the military dictatorship that was in place at the time considered it to encourage suicide.
Thanks Ansel and Doctor B for the last handful of points, hopefully should have remained safely top 10 from that x
Thanks Doctor B and Ansel. I did think this entry would likely belong to the latter!
intense!!!
Thank you Ansel oh my I think that puts me joint 3rd and a very close top 2!
The Moody Blues received no points from the last two voters. Television received 16 points which is enough to make up the gap.
We have a tie
So this will be decided by which of the two songs had the most votes...........
Oops Rainbow ending up being a little frontloaded - oh my at a tie for the lead though I'd assume The Moody Blues to win this one but we'll see in a moment x
Television - Marquee Moon......Chez Wombat had 13 votes
The Moody Blues - I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)......AH Gold had 12 votes
Television are the winners, Congratulations Chez Wombat
The full scoreboard coming up..........
the suspense
Edit ah well done Chez.
Thanks for hosting and a really interesting theme Rollo!
Ooh yay happy to have been wrong there! Not that I'd have minded The Moody Blues winning but Television was the better of the two for me *.* congrats Chez - avoiding the bridesmaid curse by the smallest of margins
congrats Chez and AH Gold
I'm hoping Clout managed to stay top 5, which is amazing result and continuing my top 10 streak!!!
Thanks Rollo for the theme and smooth hosting <3
What a finish! Congratulations Chez and well played AH Gold too, those were both in my top 3 so I'm happy with the outcome!
I counted that I had as many points and votes as the song in 3rd, but it had more 12s than I did, so it looks like I've completed the unlucky 2nd-4th-6th-11th set
Thank you Rollo for hosting, lots of interesting discoveries made!

A win for Television on a tie-break over the Moody Blues is confirmed. With just one point from the last two votes, long time leaders Rainbow have to settle for third place. 22 points for Joy Division move them up from 9th to 4th while 16 for Yes give them a climb from 8th to 5th. At the bottom, another 11 points for Betty Davis lift her above Johnny Cash who finishes last after neither of the last two voters gave him any points.
Congrats Chez! A great winner. Happy to not be last myself, honestly I chose my song by picking something that sounded okay off Spotify's auto-generated "70s Rock Mix" so had no idea how that was gonna go for me. Not particularly my style usually but some great finds here! Thanks Rollo for hosting.
!!!! Well that is quite the photo finish, and avoiding my token 2nd place in every song contest as well! (guess that'll come in time x). I was hoping this one would do a bit better than my last few entries, but I didn't expect it to go all the way. Thank you all so much (That last minute 12 from Doctor Blind in particular was a life saver!), I know this is something of a classic, but it's fairly new to me and I figured it may be to younger participants here too so pleased to see it get such a good reception from everyone.
Congrats to AH Gold too, I recall enjoying that quite a bit too (though slightly glad I didn't give it one more point now ) and great to see my top 2 in the top 5. This was a case of me preferring my 12 pointer to my own entry, shame Rainbow couldn't quite keep up that early lead but thanks for the great discovery <3
Thanks for a well hosted and high quality edition of these, Rollo! Happy to host the next one as well, not got many ideas though so open to suggestions x
Well done Chez, I finished right where I belonged because I didn’t really give much calculated thought to my entry, I thought if an artist I liked and tried to find a song from the decade to fit, and that’s what I went for. I enjoyed taking part though, so thank you Rollo for hosting this one for us all.
I'm happy that Yes crept into the top 5 at the end.
Thanks everyone for commenting along as the results were revealed.
There were certainly some twists and turns as the votes came in.
Congrats again Chez, and bad luck AH Gold on coming so close. I noticed you have no widgets after 16 years on the forum so I hope you win a song contest soon.
Happy with 9th for myself, continuing to move up in the world from bottom 5 to bottom 7 now guess my next target will be to finish in the top half of one of these! Was nice to pick up a 12 anyways (I may be wrong but I feel like this may be the first one I've got in any of the 4 editions! And this entry got nearly as many points as my 3 previous ones combined haha).
Yay that Rainbow did win its tiebreak to stay in the top 3, and pleased to see Yes nabbing the last slot in the top 5 in the end. Myself and all of my votes all finished in the top 12, The Babys being the one that I snubbed which outperformed at least one that I voted for - quite a shame to see Serge Gainsbourg not making the top 10 though aw </3
Thanks for the hosting Rollo, looking forward to seeing what theme Chez comes through with for the next one of these!
Oh if only I gave Television one less point
Congrats Chez Wombat! I had known that song for years without knowing what it was called or who it was by.
I certainly didn’t expect to do that well. 2nd place is the best I’ve ever managed in any contest (a bit tragic as I’ve been on here for about 15 years). Or joint 1st, as I’m choosing to see it 😛
Thanks for doing this Rollo! A fab theme. And thanks to all who voted, especially John for the 12.
❤️
My 12 won yay!
Well done Chez!
I could have been more inspired with my choice but tbh I panicked a little at the theme and just went for a favourite in my family
Thanks for organising Rollo and thanks for entering everyone! If I'd known there wouldn't be any punk idve gone for Gary Gilmores Eyes, but The Baby's did ok for a pop rock number. Ooh so close with Moody Blues there, but of a gem from AH I wasn't expecting, ditto poor Johnny Cash at the bottom end, not one I knew much. All very interesting overall!
Aww I'm quite disappointed with that result finishing outside the top 10 in a field of this size isn't great, but ah well. Thanks to those who did point it
Congrats Chez, wonderful winner looking forward to whatever you may choose for the next theme. Thanks Rollo for your fab hosting! Enjoyed your write-ups a lot.
I've compiled a league table based on the results of the first four contests. You get 10 points for 1st place in each contest down to 1 point for 10th place. I'll update this after each contest.

Late but thanks for all the votes for Rainbow, 12s from a quarter of participants wow! Was a great discovery for me too when researching for an entry, Bo Rap vibes!
Congrats to Chez for the win and to Rollo for hosting, see you in CB25
