Feel free to move this topic if it's better placed elsewhere but I've started listening to the PopMaster quiz with Ken Bruce, on Radio 2, this week and have quickly become hooked. So thought why not create a topic where we can share scores and chat about it if others are interested too.

For those unfamiliar it's essentially a music quiz that features questions spanning from the 1950s to the present day. Two contestants play a unique round of questions each where they can score up to 39 points. This includes regular questions worth 3 points each and three bonus questions for 6 points apiece. The contestant with the highest score then advances to the 'Three-in-Ten' round, where they have 10 seconds to name 3 chart hits by a random artist chosen.

It's on during weekdays at 10:30am - 11am.

Round 1: 27/39 (didn't get: Supergrass album, Erasure 00s hit, 5000 Volts 70s hits)
Round 2: 27/39 (didn't get: Duane Eddy, 1984 top 3 - was confusing the years of the 80s TOTP episodes I watched recently , Michael McDonald)
Three-in-Ten: 2/3 (got 'Come On Eileen' and 'Geno', really should've got 'Jackie Wilson Says' due to the infamous TOTP blunder but had a mind-blank))

That consistency today *.*

Round 1 - I got 15 pts
Round 2 - I got 30 pts

I named Come On Eileen, Geno, Jackie Wilson Said for the three hits so 3 out of 3.

I might have got one or two more but the contestants said the answer while I was still trying to think what it might be.

Round 1 - I'm not sure how you score it as I've never played before but I got them all aside from the final question.

Round 2 - Got them all aside from Duane Eddy

Round 3 - Only got 2 out of 3 as I couldn't think of anything at all past the obvious two

The three bonus questions (related to the category that the contestant chose at the start, out of two options) are worth 6 points each. Ken usually specifies which questions are the bonus ones before reading them out - I think normally question 3, 6 and 9 from what I gather so far. The rest are worth 3 each!

Impressive stuff, anyway. *.*

I normally have it on in the background while working or doing buzzjacky stuff and turn it up for the questions, and then get frustrated at how my memory recall is getting worse for names and dates as I get older, especially recent stuff(*).

Round 1 - I forgot who sang the 2010 hit! the 2000 Erasure song! and shouted out the wrong Donna Summer cover before I corrected myself. Very poor!

Round 2 - Got 2011 song Jealousy wrong (my brain just kept repeating Not Pet Shop Boys Not Pet Shop Boys), and the Chico number 1 (he said it before my brain got into gear!).

got the 3 in ten though. I often don't though...


(*) anything post 2000 as Ive never reviewed anything from this century beyond what I hear on the radio!

When we actually used to go into the office everyone kept trying to get me to go on the show (no thanks! Been on a radio 1 pop quiz, never again!) as my party piece used to be showing off pop trivia knowledge if anyone needed a question answering. I wouldnt have minded getting the ones above wrong if I didn't know or like them. But I did like those tracks (bar Chico)!

I have a long term plan to go on this but really need to improve my 70s and 80s knowledge first!

I haven’t listened to those episodes but I tend to score around Jade’s level - so could probably do decently but wouldn’t go on unless I could do really well haha!

I listen to this everyday I’m working from home and my notepad is full of 3/3 and 0/6s when I’m scoring myself 😂. Especially love the Champions League each Xmas week!

My average score is around 15-20/39 most days but it really depends on the questions so one day I might only get 3/39 (damn 60s and 70s questions) but the highest I’ve got is 36/39!

Today I was poor and got 6/39 and 18/39 but got the 3 in 10 for U2 and 1/3 for the other one!

The Scottish guy who was on Hit List was also on Pop Master yday 😄

Great to see quite a few others enjoying this! I knew I recognised one of the people on it yesterday from The Hit List, Steve, his knowledge is really impressive. That'd be amazing if you went on it one day, Julian! I'd be tempted, maybe when I reach my 30s or something and have had more time to delve even further into the archives.

I have binged most of the October episodes this week and my best result so far is 33 points (and 3/3 for the artist) for the episode titled 'Jamiroquai, Queen and Sigrid', it really pays off to get all of the bonus points. Determined to achieve a full house one day somehow

Yep PopMaster only episodes! Cut down to 17 minutes each (with the song usually played in between rounds and the shoutouts omitted) - which has been a godsend for bingeing

I ended up cheekily putting it on in the office after all

Dropped a bit today but still consistent across both:

Round 1: 24 (didn't get: the Dave Edmunds hits, Atlantic Starr hits, Randy Edelman hits, Aaron Neville feature)
Round 2: 24 (didn't get: Lena Zavaroni debut hit, post-Hopes & Fears Keane albums, Roger Miller hit, Sinitta hits)
Three-in-Ten: 3 (named 'It Must've Been Love', 'The Look' and 'Fading Like A Flower' in my head)

I thought I would be doomed with the Country category so was pleasantly surprised when I locked in that first bonus question

In way more impressive news, I finished catching up on October episodes and got a new personal best for the second set of questions in the episode titled 'Snap, McFly and Demi Lovato' - got 36 and all 3 for three-in-ten!! *.* so close.

36 and 3 in ten is champion final level Jade!

It's all luck of the draw though. Sometimes I get everything right, mostly I get a few wrong.

Today I got the years wrong for both - it really helps to have aback catalogue of standard bearer track yeardates in your head and hope they are ones they mention! Personal memories associated with songs def help in most cases but the Michael jackson mention threw me off as I thought it was 2 years later due to a bad memory associated with it.

I also struggled with Keane album titles (and Ive bought 2 of the bloody things!) and that Delta Goodrem/McFadden song I had no memory of. But I reckon a certain Delta fan or 2 on BJ wouldve got it right off

It's pretty impressive when younger music fans go on and do well - it's easy to recall stuff from your teens and 20's as music forms such a backdrop to life at that age and the brain is buzzing, but older and newer music doesn't stick quite so much. It's rare I get anything from the 70's or 80s wrong, 60's and 90's mostly right, 00's and 10's it's less than half unless they are current/recent radio play tracks, I usually know them. They seem to have phased those questions out recently though, they always used to stick one in.

If only duos were allowed my Paul Anka knowledge was born out of listening to every Billboard Hot 100 #1 in recent months.


Oh wow now I need to try and land in the 30s more consistently it really is the luck of the draw, especially with the bonus points counting for so much. An unfavourable topic selection and bam. Sorry to hear about the bad memory </3 although it's intriguing to see how our musical minds work as the MJ one was actually the song that helped me get the year!

Yeah I definitely hear what you're saying, as a late 90s baby I've had 00s-current music as my omnipresent soundtrack, so that is where my natural advantage would lie. Then, the 90s is my parents’ favourite era, so a lot of that music played around the house growing up too. I have also had particular spells of obsessing over 60s music (off the back of The Beatles) and 80s (synths galore!!) - need to try and fill in 50s and 70s more

Maybe I should start listening again on BBC Sounds as I can rarely hear it live. With the years, there is often a song in there that I can pinpoint straight away. Other times, a song will trigger a memory. In each case, it is sometimes an exact year but it might just be a more vague period. One year out happens quite a lot! Occasionally, none of them will be much help, particularly if they are all by acts with a long chart career.

as an RAF child we were always moving so every place we lived is ingrained with memories of what music I was loving at that time, so I have a very long series of fixed-points through to around 1985 so always get those right. We moved to Poole in 1984 and that stopped when we stopped moving, so don't have so much in the way of joggers except holidays. Much harder!

I have a pretty encyclopaedic knowledge of 2000s Now albums so that came in handy today

I was so hoping that a certain BJSC entry of yours was going to come up when Propellerheads were mentioned, alas

Oh wow an exact snap for Round 2 *.* </3 I actually know the names of his #1 and #2 singles but had absolutely no idea on the ones mentioned. I think I first knew of that artist's existence because my grandma once went to look at a house formerly owned by them years earlier when she was planning to relocate

I'm annoyed I missed a maximum score by getting a year from the 1980s wrong. I'm more certain of years from that decade than the 90s onwards.

I get a as I got the lot today - I had to guess the name of the band in round one but it sounded like a Simon fave so I had a go and it was

X-Ray Spex people should have got from Buzzjack the other month if they were in that semi (I do my best to help! ). I was pleased to see Cerrone Supernature made the itunes chart a couple of weeks back, but I didn't know why till I saw the advert the other day. Ignored for 43 years, one BJSC final and suddenly everyone wants it. I swear the media is following Buzzjack for tips....!

I got the year wrong too round 1, but the very golden oldies elsewhere were easy for me, well done on the 60's track - that band have an amazing back catalogue if you havent heard them: think template for Abba.

That one youve heard recently is easier for me as the act name is also the name of a song - one The Beatles covered, I think!

doing well there! My mate went to see the act singing your mum's fave last week on their (prob) final tour. Mike Batt wrote and produced that one and it topped my charts the same year he was still a Womble hitmaker and topped my chart as a solo act!

I know a few songs by them and 'California Dreamin' is a big favourite but I need to venture further!

Oh yes that song is on their debut, definitely using that association going forward to help me remember

I've been on Popmaster twice, once when I was 19, and again in 2012. I didn't win either time, but still won a CD case and a "One Year Out" t-shirt respectively. One of the questions I got wrong was to complete the title of the Ultravox song "Reap The Wild...". I answered "Oats", which had Ken Bruce in stitches (the actual answer was "wind"). Also failed to recognise Jimmy Nail's "Ain't No Doubt", which is now forever etched in my mind. I've tried applying for it a few more times over the years since then with no luck, but would love a chance to try again just to win.

well done on going on! winning is just a bonus really but loved the Reap The Wild Oats! Your Jimmy Nail is my Genesis Invisible Touch. DJ Mike Read asked me the question (my first one) and I stood there on the Radio 1 roadshow mouth open like a goldfish as the crowd shouted at me. "You can't see me" said Mike as he touched my shoulder. I thought he'd gone mad till the answer dawned on me. And he took the piss out of me wearing a sweater on a hot sunny day

Once again prevented from a full house in a round by the final question!! most satisfied with the Sparks answer today - tune.

That disparity between rounds R2 was definitely more well-suited to my knowledge, but I do think my mind was less sharp for R1 anyway as I played straight off the back of a brain-melting task at work, like I couldn't even fill in the blank with a guess in R1 for the Alison one, but for R2 I got the Jamiroquai question by doing just that.

Missed yesterdays but well done all 1 I came in halfway through round 1 today and did badly! Round 2 also not great.

Re easiest 3 in 10, not pet shop boys, it was abba. Is there anyone that couldnt name 3 abba songs? id say a basic qualification for going on popmaster is the ability to name 3 songs by abba, if you cant do that youre on the wrong quiz!

I've been playing the last 3/4 days and today I got my highest (a score of 33)
but for me it totally depends if there's 70s questions, very unlikely to get those unless it'a an ABBA question

the final question also depends on how recent the act, like yesterday I could tell you 15 but today just 1.

It's down to the way the memory works as you get older, I'm afraid! (Pretty sure Radio 2 playlisted that track). Something to look forward to! I can remember records I heard once or twice from decades ago because young brains are like lightning and firing on all cylinders in your teen years and 20's especially, and what you learn stays with you all your life, but I struggle to remember some titles and artists on records that topped my charts 5 or 10 years ago when put on the spot. I'm fine for a couple of years, and then unless I refresh my memory they fade a bit cos I have lost so many brain cells on a daily basis that I can't possibly compete with younger people! I once used the same bank cashpoint code for years, and one day I forgot it and it never returned. That memory cell went belly up that day and I had to go to the bank to re-set it. This one has lasted 10 years. So far so good!

That said, said popstar ballads tend to merge together a bit in my head his poppier ones are more memorable - though I did get that one so yay me!

I could also tell you the result of every FA Cup Final from the 70s. I wouldn't be able to remember the result of any FA Cup Final from the last ten years even though I watched them all.

I'm liking the optimism

I think my recent inconsistency would spook me too much at the moment, this month I've ranged from an all-time low of 9 to 36(+3, indeed qualification) - so would be gutted if it was a former kind of day I think I need at least a few more years of swotting up on TOTP haha, there's still a lot of gaps to fill in from my pre-1997 existence *_*

That’s how I learned about music before my lifetime lol watching the TOTP repeats for the past decade starting in 1976 but really loving it from 1980 especially as newer and modern sounds we know today had their origins!

Semi 2 i got 20 for round 1, missing out on 3, 5, 9 and 10 and one word wrong for title in 8, doh!


Round 2 34 points, much better, 4, 7 and 8 wrong and he was too fast with answer for 2 which i knew.

Final: round 1 got 28 points, 3, 4, 5, 6 wrong and missed half of the title for 9 doh!

Round 2 was 27 points 4, 6 and 8 wrong and didnt quite get the nsme right for 10.

I did give the duo pisstake of Telly Savalas If a link a few weeks back in the worst number ones votes so if you didnt get that go back to the thread and play it as penance still amusing

I was going to catch up with last week's episodes but thought that it might not be the best time to jump in with the Champions League thing happening - so starting from today instead (I played Wednesday through Friday of the week before that, I won't post the breakdowns from those episodes but I scored 18/18, 12/21 and 15/12, so no great scores yet but also nothing super embarrassing. Though I have been doing pretty miserably so far in the 3 in 10 round, tbf I think they have been quite difficult ones so far but also my brain just goes directly to mush every time )

Well I remain consistently mediocre at least! I think I could have pushed to a 24 in round 1 there - I definitely should have got 'Lullaby' as I know all 3 of the songs of that title lmao but I misheard Sigala as Sigma and thought 'Changing' instead, of course they both have to have a song with Paloma Faith :') and I said 1987 for the year so my first 'one year out' moment x. Maybe also a 21 in round 2 could have been possible, I guessed Chic for the Earth, Wind & Fire question, close enough x Was a bit further out with the year this time as I guessed 1971 but correct decade at least! Never would have got any of the others, a bunch of names I don't recognise.

Beat my high score in round 1 and then beat it again in round 2! I see we all did well today so pretty accessible questions for the BuzzJack demographic I guess. Round 2 today was my first time getting all 3 of the bonus questions correct.

The year questions are really proving to be an Achilles heel for me as I expected, I'm dreadful at recalling years - my guesses were 1975 and 2001, respectively 5 years and 1 year out with one being in the wrong decade again whoops. Roxette was an annoying miss as I confused 'The Look' with 'The Look Of Love' so my immediate thought was ABC - I knew it was wrong but I couldn't get it out of my head in time to get the right answer before the contestant said it grr!

Otherwise, Gloria Estefan was a lucky guess and I only knew 'This Wheel's On Fire' due to Jade being a fan haha. Kursaal Flyers appearing was iconic too, though I think I could have guessed that answer even if I didn't know the song from BJSC.

My failed guesses at the years today were 1987 and 1982, 3 and 4 years out. I really thought MC Hammer was late 80s whoops. Other than that the only miss that I'm really kicking myself over is Sophie, that was a mind blank moment. Impressed that I managed to get both of the 'put these songs in order of release' questions right!

A few annoying misses today - The Corrs I definitely should have got and then a couple that I'd have got if I retained information better from the #1 albums sessions whoops - Paul Weller's song was literally played at the last session! I blame it having a generic title. And I know The Supremes one was track 1 on a greatest hits collection from them which I think was chronological, but alas could not recall the title. And then Lynn Anderson was a similar one to Robbie Robertson where I know the song from my mum being a fan but the artist name escaped me unfortunately.

Pleased with myself that I finally got one of the years correct again at least! But then 6 years early with my guess for the second round's year which I think is the furthest out I've been to date

well done Jade! I got the 90's rock track wrong and also the year, Round 1, so you would have beaten me!

Round 2 39 & the 3 in 10 was fine for me, seen her a couple of times in concert

Also, I am sat alone at home, with Covid and chest infection, no working fridge and I'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow on my 65th birthday. Working from home or sick, I think, with Popmaster to keep me company

If I'm working tomorrow I wont have time to do a Birthday UK Number One review like Suedey did on his 60th, so maybe I can do a commentary-free list this afternoon instead...

A fairly embarrassing miss on question 2 in both rounds today oops! I confused 'Slave To The Rhythm' with 'Rhythm Nation' so thought Janet Jackson, and as for Kate Bush I thought David Bowie for some reason idk why. My incorrect year guess for round 2 was 4 years late. Had no clue for the first 2 bonuses in round 2 but pleased that I pulled out the last one - I remember Midnight Oil from a Todd in the Shadows 'One Hit Wonderland' video on them.

I saw Paul Young in the title of the podcast episode and was really hoping it'd be a question about that Zucchero collab haha. Iconic.

Had no clue about either of the tiebreak questions btw. Didn't even know they did them until now!

There were a lot of ancient questions today, I knew Wayne Fontana and doubt few others would have even heard of him So well done everyone who gets respectable scores in the face of that! (Jade n Jim so far).

As I do better when its 60's/70s/80s heavy I've got a Ken Bruce birthday gift of full marks all round and 3 in 10 easy, cough cough cough. That's not modesty, that's the Covid when I try and say the answer out loud!

Well I had a good run of avoiding embarrassing scores but the inevitable has happened today! (And I see no one else struggled nearly as much, including John casually getting full marks, which is making me feel rather inadequate :'( congrats John though and happy birthday!)

My first guess for the year for round 2 was actually right but I changed my answer (to 4 years later) in my head before it was revealed I want to still count that but it's still my first sub-10 score either way so At least I got the first year and it being a pre-2000 one this time!

From round 1, had no clue about any of the bonuses but feel like I should maybe have been able to recognise Andy's voice, as for X-Ray Spex the only song I know from them is the one John sent to BJSC and that didn't get a mention!

From round 2, several of those answers did ring a bell when they were revealed - Little Eva, Brenda Russell, Keith Washington - but I don't know if I'd ever have been able to recall them without Google. The only real kick myself moment was the KC & The Sunshine Band one which I definitely should have got but had a mind blank. As for Kylie I was really convinced that 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' was a) before 'Spinning Around' and b) in 2000 rather than 2001 oops! Brain definitely took a holiday for that round. Ah well, hopefully that's rock bottom and I can avoid 0s and 3s

I can safely say I only recognise the one song I named from the 3 in 10 artist, having looked through their chart history.

Got a more healthy 18/39 in round 2 and thought the 2000 group was Bewitched 😕!!

Thanks Bre and Jade on the birthday wishes, and well done everybody, honestly marks in the 30's are really top tier! 20's is good, 10's respectable. Some contestants struggle to get any points in the glare of national radio

I feel I have a unfair advantage by virtue of being a music fan non-stop since I was 5 years old, so I have to compare how I'd do with songs and questions from the 1920's to 1950's...and the answer is very, very badly! I'd get some, but mostly I wouldn't really know much pre-50's, so it's super-impressive that folk are so aware of music from before they were born!

And today I had brain freeze with the 3 in 10, I got the 2 massive hits from 1998 and then I did my impression of a goldfish desperately trying to come up with the lesser (but fab) pop hits I really rated or the dull country ballads. I remember them NOW, of course, but "don't call me stupid"

'I Love My Smile' is a Pixie Lott song in my head and I hate this x

From round 2 I also confused Atomic Kitten with B*Witched oops, but my guess for Pink Floyd was a bit further off as I punted at them being The Monkees lmao. Never heard of Dee C Lee, I only know the Girls Aloud version and obviously knew that wasn't the answer. I was 4 years early for the year.

I should have been able to also recall 'That Don't Impress Me Much' for 3 in 10 but I don't think I'd have been able to get a third one.

Bar a better guess at the year (I was 5 years late) round 1 couldn't have gone better there for my knowledge. Think I could have got 27 in round 2 - was just 1 year late on the year question (and that should have been an easy one oops, I forgive myself for missing pre-Y2K years but no excuse for this) and then I remembered the A Flock Of Seagulls song had the word 'photograph' in the title but alas that was all. If the contestant got 1 point for his half answer can I claim like half a point for that? also as a couple of others have said, the only cover of that Bowie song that I know is the Nirvana one but of course knew that was a couple of decades out.

I thought both rounds were rather tough today and felt ok with my middling scores but I'm back to feeling dumb after seeing some of these other scores! well done all x

The bonuses in round 1 were all completely no clue for me but the Gun song sounded pretty interesting so I may have to check that out (edit: I have done so now, great song!) I was 11 years early for the year which is by far my worst guess to date

From round 2, I did nearly get question 1 right as a pure guess (missed the 'On Me'), and the Adam Faith song title was on the tip of my tongue but couldn't quite recall it.

The 3 in 10 artist was another one where you could give me 10 years and I'd still only get 1/3.

I was 2 years early on round 1 and 2 years late on round 2, although my initial gut answer for round 2 was actually right and then I changed it before the answer was revealed, second time that's happened now grr!

From round 1 there was one answer I retained from playing the relevant song at the #1 albums sessions (Paul Simon) and another that I should have but didn't (Céline Dion). Despite my score for round 2 being way lower than everyone else's, I still feel like there's only one question (bar the year) that was within the reach of my knowledge - I guessed 'Up And Down' for the Craig/Sting song so I had the right idea but alas did not quite recall it correctly!

With the 3 in 10 I assumed 'Groovejet' wouldn't have been accepted - but I think it took me longer than 10 seconds to recall it anyway. I confess that I have been pausing before the contestant starts answering as I find that too distracting, I guess that's probably cheating a bit though even with that cheating I still fail more often than not oop

And had two lucky guesses be correct today - I probably knew the Wizzard one subconsciously from it always being included in the chart show thread writeups for their Christmas hit, whereas Emmerdale was just a complete random guess, perhaps my subconscious thought process there was hillbilly = farm = Emmerdale lmao.

If one is picky there have been a couple errors in last week's questions

Also had no clue about the first 3 that I missed in round 2, for the last bonus I made the same incorrect guess of Dean Martin as the contestant did, whoops ~ I was trying to think of Julian's thread but I think I was confusing 'Papa Loves Mambo' with 'Mambo Italiano' whoops! Plus it did kind of sound like him...

Had a couple of lucky educated guesses today - The Beautiful South, The Rolling Stones and Kim Appleby were all answers I was unsure of.

His contract only lasts 2 years and ends in march. I assume hits radio made him an offer he couldnt refuse in an attempt to get the 8 million listeners ken and popmaster brings in.

Place your bets on which ex radio 1 dj will get the slot! Id like Scott Mills to move there and fill the afternoon slot with another radio 1 dj who's pushing 35 or so...

For the first bonus on round 2 I guessed Tom Jones - he does have a song called 'Give A Little Love' but wasn't a hit (also thought it was a much older song whoops). And the Sister Sledge one was a 100% shot in the dark as I've never heard of that song but just sounded like a plausible title!

Actual points obtained depends on how strict Ken would be with me I said Jennifer Hollowson beautifully combing the original hitmaker and the American Idol star and then I got Jane for the cruising star without enough time from the bloke giving up to let me dig out McDonald oops!

I just named one random old Xmas songs for the 3 in 1 and pretty sure that was right with no chance of getting any of the non-xmas hits as my brain struggles with blandness. Even cheerful blandness that I quite like.

did badly today, my brain wasn't working. Out late (for me) last night ironically at a quiz where we blew out over a question about Scottish Whisky being wrong. Whisky In The Jar had popped up on my car CD on the way, so it wasnt as if there were no warning. Excuses excuses...!


I forgot: Ricky Ross, Marilyn's single (I follow him on Twitter), Tom Odell's Beatles cover, a word in the Tin Tin Out title wrong when I've spoken to actual Tin Tin Out's Shelley Nelson's mum at one of her Radio 1 roadshow's, and I didnt know the Radio 4 question at all.

3/3 bonuses for round 2 yass - I saw The Simpsons were in the podcast title for an earlier episode and was disappointed I couldn't whip out the iconic 'Deep, Deep Trouble' as an answer but could do for today!!! I saw that on an old Top of the Pops episode I watched with Jade a while ago and we made a bit of a meme of it haha. I think this was the first 'put these songs in order of release' question I've got wrong since I started playing though aw (I got 'Holiday' 1st correct but then got 'Human Nature' and 'Hollywood' the wrong way round).

Echoing the general sentiment that round 2 was really hard, especially the bonuses, so I'm glad I wasn't alone in that (although I still got an even lower score than everyone else as usual ) - it was very nearly a 6 again as it took me ages to recall 'I Want You Back' but I just barely got it before Ken read out the answer (thanks to the contestant not knowing it) so I'm counting that

That's probably the quickest I've ever got a 3 in 10 although I have no idea why that third song came to mind first over so many other more obvious options x

Well done to a few people on full houses again today my wait to have any chance at one continues x

Probably should have got the 3 in 10 but my mind was still stuck on 'I Want You Back' from the other day, which is of course the wrong Mel. An old BJSC is the culprit for me somehow recalling a #49 hit over all of this artist's other top 10s I fully forgot 'I Turn To You' existed honestly, and I was trying to recall the Matt Cardle collab too but couldn't remember its title in time.

1 year late then 4 years late - the first year was an annoying miss because like Rollo I was helped out by 'Shiver' being at the #1 album session yesterday but unfortunately that only narrowed it down to 2 years and I guessed wrong oops!

A couple of lucky educated guesses here - The Sundays was a total guess just based on the name of the bonus category, and I didn't know Against All Odds was a film lol but just identified the song I guess though I wasn't certain even about that.

you even got the year in R2? cos that was super tricky, cos they had Sugababes-Too Lost, which was a #10 debut single in 2003
but they had it for 2004 when it was still in the charts but well past its peak, my answer was 03 rather than 04

Lord I cannot think of a bonus round that is less suited to me than that 'next line' one I did at least get 1/6 bonuses today by managing to completely guess Aswad but otherwise a disaster oops. Was 1 year early for both years as well :'( I should have got Mr. Big too, could picture the music video in my head but just couldn't recall the band name!

Aside from better guessing at the years (was 6 years early then 4 years late today oop) I feel like the only other ones there that I should have got were Fugees and Amy Grant - the former I just forgot about entirely but then kicked myself when it was read out, while for the latter I got 'Big Yellow Taxi' and 'Joe Le Taxi' mixed up and said Vanessa Paradis although I am not sure I'd have been able to quickly recall Amy Grant's name anyway tbf. The rest ring no bells at all so 30+ scores were completely out of my knowledge limits today! (I did know Sham 69 had a song called 'Hurry Up England' which was of course a World Cup themed update of 'Hurry Up Harry' but had no clue at all about the original title oop)

15 is more than the contestants seem to get most days. Sometimes you can tell their minds go blank after getting 1 or 2 questions wrong, but when Ken asks how many they're aiming for or get when they're playing at home, many of them say somewhere in the teens. I'll take encyclopaedic as a compliment though!

2 years late for the second year question in round 1 - I knew it wasn't 1996 but was a 50/50 on if it was the year before or the year after oop.

In round 2 I got all of the first 5 questions but none of the last 5, think that may be a first! Think this is the second time Bob And Marcia has been an answer recently, must remember this as a stock guess for reggae related questions I think I did know Santana in the back of my mind but not kicking myself too much.

Easy 3 in 10 for me but not sure why I went for that second song over some of their more iconic / better songs, that's just the way my brain decided to work this evening!

Another case where a song contest entry is responsible for me thinking of a more obscure answer over some more obvious ones

1 year late for the round 1 year. Pretty happy with these scores today though especially in round 2 as 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' was one I just barely managed to recall in time from the #1 albums sessions, while the Honeyz question was a bit of a lucky guess as that was the only song title from them that came to mind haha. I also said Steve Miller Band for the last question despite knowing it was obviously wrong lol x

Poor Ken, just 4 to go, getting pushed out early by Logan's Run Carousel-inspired "go for the 90's generation" policies. Vernon Kay drafted in to appeal to game show fans and that all-important 90's/early 00's-too-old-for-Radio-1-now target audience....

Anyways, I got 36 round 1 (Snow Patrol I went for Set Fire To The Third Bar )

Round 2: 34 I got Duffy wrong, and couldnt get the full title of Paul Young's Otis Blue out, but mentioned Otis so graciously gave myself 1 point

3 in 10 (rattled off I Kissed A Girl, Firework and then went down a one-way street shouting out Lion! No Tiger! Got Roar just after the 10 seconds expired instead of just going Chained To The Rhythm or Hot n Cold)

Yay my third ever full house for a singular round!

Those round 1 bonus questions also *.* happy that I managed to recall 'Pipeline' from old 60s charts as it was only a low top 20 hit

That Yazoo question was good timing as I recently made some 80s fantasy personal charts for fun and remember looking forward to 'Don't Go' making an appearance at some point after 'Only You' charted.

'Saturday Night' is following me around today, as I was listening to a podcast this morning where one of the hosts mentioned a noisy neighbour who plays it every Saturday without fail :')

Regarding the Yazoo question, apparently Vince Clarke wrote Only You for Depeche Mode before he left, but the rest of the group weren't keen on recording it, so he kept it for his next venture - that's what led me to guess it was Yazoo's first hit.

Think the only one I missed that I'm kicking myself over here was Seal featuring on the Jakatta song, didn't think I knew that but was an 'of course' moment as soon as it was revealed. I made the same wrong guess as the contestant confusing Olivia Newton-John with Karen Carpenter - it did kind of sound like her!

Although I did assume that probably wasn't going to be correct so I guess 'solo' meant 'as lead artist' in this case. I got the second bonus (Shakin' Stevens) right as a guess to be fair though. And I might have got the Chairmen Of The Board question if Ken gave me just a little more tarm! (jk I had no idea on that but wanted to make the joke xx).

Both questions I knew the answers to anyway but oops!

I managed to get Nick Heyward purely because of that same song being a tiebreak answer yesterday also Siouxsie And The Banshees was a guess, suppose she has a fairly recognisable voice. And I made the same incorrect guess as the contestant naming Billy Preston instead of Wilson Pickett.
