BuzzJack Music Forum _ 20th Century Retro _ The Beatles rate 2024

Posted by: Jingle Jules 25th December 2023, 12:18 PM

Merry Christmas all! I was going to wait until New Year to post this but I had a bit of time today so I thought why not make it my Christmas pressie to Buzzjack. smile.gif

I wasn’t sure which songs to include but in the end I’ve decided to keep it fairly simple and just include the blue and red album track lists plus their 3 Top 10 hits from the 1990s. I thought about adding their 22 most Spotify streamed others to bring it up to 100 but I think we’ve got enough.

I’m leaving out the “Movie Medley” and their covers of “Ain’t She Sweet” and “ My Bonnie” which don’t feel like they bring anything much anyway, and the other tracks from the “Magical Mystery Tour EP” which are good but don’t feel especially notable in the canon.

I’ll set a deadline of Wednesday 31 January 2024 at 23:59.

Please vote for your favourite 50 of the 78 tracks, giving +50 to your favourite, +49 to your second favourite and so on down to +1 for your 50th favourite. Please endeavour to listen to any songs you don’t know, and to that end there will be a listen-through from 16:00 on Sunday 14 January. There is around 4 hours of material but feel free to only join for part - the order will be as below.

I’m not going to make any distinction between the 2023 re-mastered versions of the songs and the originals - feel free to score up any where you think the edits have improved them or not as you see fit.

Happy Beatling! cool.gif

Should be good!

Posted by: Popchartfreak 26th December 2023, 10:59 AM

I think I will need to play all of these! (Except the covers, bar Twist & Shout, and Old Brown Shoe, Octopus' garden, Glass Onion, I Me Mine which have no chance of making my 50). Oddly, my fave version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is the "Love" Album revamp of an earlier non-Clapton version.

wub.gif their discography is pretty embedded in my brain by this point so I'll aim to rate sooner rather than later. Intrigued to see how the forum's taste pans out!

Posted by: Popchartfreak 31st December 2023, 03:29 PM

OK I played the entire Red & Blue albums and the extras, and tried to eliminate nostalgia and rate them according to what I'm listening to - not entirely easy to do that, and mood at any given time will affect how I feel about any given record - that's always been the case - so this is just a snapshot of the remixes really. F'rinstance, some come out of it really well, and some sound worse than the original mono single release (Hi Love Me Do, this really did you no favours at all). Of course in 6 months time the order will be different, music is fluid and up and down according to your life.

In reverse order:

78. Old Brown Shoe
77. I Want You
76. Roll Over Beethoven
75. You Really Got A Hold On Me
74. Baby It's You
73. I Saw Her Standing There
72. Glass Onion
71. Drive My Car

70. Don't Let Me Down
69. Taxman
68. You Can't Do That
67. Come Together (yes, I know...meh, over-rated laugh.gif )
66. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
65. Octopus' Garden
64. I Me Mine
63. Love Me Do
62. Please Please Me
61. Blackbird (yes I know...etc.)

60. From Me To You
59. With A Little Help From My Friends
58. This Boy
57. In My Life
56. If I Needed Someone
55. Oh! Darling
54. Within You Without You
53. Hey Bulldog
52. Dear Prudence
51. Girl

And that's the non-pointers, but some of the above are in my current chart having never charted before, so it's not as if I don't like them! Just not quite as much...

50. Paperback Writer
49. A Day In The Life
48. And I Love Her
47. I'm Only Sleeping
46. She Loves You
45. Get Back
44. Eight Days A Week
43. All My Loving
42. Day Tripper
41. I Want To Hold Your Hand

40. Yellow Submarine
39. Here There And Everywhere
38. Real Love
37. Something
36. Can't Buy Me Love
35. Ob La Di Ob La Da
34. Lady Madonna
33. Here Comes The Sun (yes I know...etc)
32. A Hard Day's Night
31. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

30. I Feel Fine
29. Free As A Bird
28. Revolution
27. Twist & Shout
26. Michelle
25. We Can Work It Out
24. Across The Universe
23. Ticket To Ride
22. Norwegian Wood
21. Yesterday

20. Back In The USSR
19. Nowhere Man
18. Now And Then
17. Got To Get You Into My Life
16. Ballad Of John & Yoko
15. Help!
14. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
13. Strawberry Fields Forever
12. Tomorrow Never Knows
11. Magical Mystery Tour

10. I Am The Walrus
9. Let It Be
8. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
7. All You Need Is Love
6. The Long & Winding Road
5. Penny Lane
4. Hello Goodbye
3. The Fool On The Hill
2. Hey Jude
1. Eleanor Rigby

Note Paul grabs the top 6, his tunes hit the spot better to give them the edge at the top end, but John's are mostly more interesting and raw, so he dominates from 7 to 19 for the most part. The 3 post-Beatles tracks all did better than I expected.

Missing, total faves like When I'm 64, I Need You, I Should Have Known Better, Rain, Two Of Us, No reply, She's Leaving Home, Golden Slumbers, Because, Good Night, my picks among many other songs that should have been on the Red & Blue albums instead of the filler listed here 68 to 78. Others, of course, will have different views biggrin.gif

This will close at some point I promise - I’ve not wanted to rush people and have been pretty busy myself so haven’t wanted to rush into the results. Bray and I will make 16 voters which isn’t bad for a 60s band but I’d love to get a bit closer to 20!

You Really Got A Hold On Me

And so this really had a hold on precisely no-one. It was included on the 1963 album “With The Beatles”, and is a cover of a Smokey Robinson & The Miracles song from the year before.

Listening to the original and this side by side, John’s raspy vocals do add a bit of bite to the track but overall I think it works better as a soul song than as a rock ‘n’ roll song. That said, dead last with nul points feels a little harsh for it.

Old Brown Shoe

Voter: …ready for it

This was written by George Harrison and he’s also the lead performer. It was released as the B side to “The Ballad Of John And Yoko” in 1969, and appears on various compilation albums but not on any of the main studio albums. George has received praise from music critics for his guitar solo on the track.

Although it didn’t make my votes and George’s other songs in the running here are much better, I do rather like the grittiness of it and I’d have quite liked it to finish a little higher.

01/04/1995 The Beatles Baby It's You {7}-9-27-41-57-73-71R(9)->7

A Burt Bacharach song, this was originally released by The Shirelles in 1961, and then was recorded by the Beatles and included on the “Please Please Me” album in 1963. Later it was included on the 1994 “Live At The BBC” album, and then released as a single in 1995.

I don’t hugely care for this cover, and in fact think the version by The Shirelles is more interesting.

This wasn’t on any of the main UK albums but was released as the B side to “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in November 1963. Apparently John had a number of influences in writing this, including Smokey Robinson and
“To Know Him Is To Love Him” by the Teddy Bears. It’s a sweet one but probably doesn’t grab the listener like most of the other songs here.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 9th April 2024, 09:27 AM

awww at This Boy, obv just edged out of my points, but the B side was part of my chilldhood as dad bought I Want To Hold Your Hand and Can't Buy Me Love. Definitely deserved a bit higher....

The other 3 very much not faves, and the original versions of the covers are much better...

A 1956 Chuck Berry song that has been widely covered and was ranked one of the 100 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This 1963 version was included on “With The Beatles”.

This seems another fairly inessential early Beatles cover to me, but the points are really ramping up from single figures now.

Nothing essential lost for me so far.

I do quite like their take on Roll Over Beethoven though.

A later track now here from the 1968 “White Album”. John’s playful nonsense lyrics here refer to various other Beatles songs. It was remixed for the 2006 “Love” album.

I think this suffers due to not really having a hook at all, but there’s plenty to enjoy in the performance and the instruments for fans of psychedelic rock. I particularly like the dazed sounding outro.

Posted by: Roba. 9th April 2024, 04:53 PM

'Glass Onion' was quite good for me. Had it at like 5 or 6 to start with then bumped up with another listen or so!

Posted by: Notorious D.O.T 9th April 2024, 06:53 PM

Aww that is indeed a bit of a shame to see Glass Onion out so early.

Funnily enough exactly like Roba I ended up appreciating it more while listening to compile a list for this.

Posted by: Brer 9th April 2024, 09:27 PM

'Glass Onion' is definitely the best song to be out so far (I do like all the callbacks to older songs x) but still not lost any of my votes yet.

'This Boy' was iirc my least favourite song on the whole list, not exactly bad but just very inessential, an odd choice to include on the compilation.

Posted by: Jade 9th April 2024, 09:34 PM

With The Beatles is my least favourite of their records so can't say I'm too upset about that album attracting the lone 0 pointer / further early casualties.

'Glass Onion' is the first of my votes to drop out then, albeit merely a 3 pointer. I love the bass, John's delivery, some of the callbacks to other work (especially the flute touch when referencing 'The Fool On The Hill') and the creepy outro.

From “Rubber Soul” released in December 1965, this was written by George and considered to be his best song to date. You can hear the beginnings of his Indian influence in the guitar riff, which he would go on to take much further. It was written for Pattie Boyd who George married in 1966. A (not particularly good) cover by The Hollies reached #20 in early 1966.

This has lovely rich harmonies and it’s a very nice track to listen to, but I think the track’s inspiration would be used to greater effect later on.

A 1964 song included on “A Hard Day’s Night” and also the B side to “Can’t By Me Love”, this is one of several jealous themed songs that John wrote, another example being “Run For Your Life”.

I find the contrast between the jovial musical feel of the song and the menacing paranoid lyrics slightly disturbing, though that may be why some like it. The guitar riffs were written by George and the song has an interesting blues influenced style.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 10th April 2024, 02:20 PM

Still not lost any pointers though I do like If I Needed Someone. The Beatles version of Roll Over Beethoven doesn't stand up to ELO's hit version, which is my fave version even over Chuck's. And appropriately, given Jeff 90's guest Beatle, 80's George Harrison and Wilbury's etc.

This was the last song recorded before their break-up in April 1970, and included on “Let It Be”. It’s another George penned track which alternates between a waltz style verse and a hard rock style chorus. The lyrics about selfish egos might be thought to refer to the discord in the band at the time.

It’s certainly a very unusual and interesting track: I think I prefer the verse parts to the chorus parts myself. Clearly its fans really like it a lot as it received 3 large scores but nothing else.

This was included on the 1969 “Yellow Submarine” film soundtrack album. Like “Lady Madonna” from around the same time, it’s one of only a few Beatles songs to be based on a piano riff. It was a relatively forgotten Beatles song for many years but has been reappraised more recently.

It feels very early to be losing somebody’s 50 pointer but there we go. It is a really strong riff and a fun song that perhaps lacks a memorable chorus.

Another “White Album” track, this was written in India and is about Prudence Farrow, the sister of actress Mia Farrow, who had become obsessed with meditation and reclusive. The lyrics ask her to get out and rediscover the beauty of nature.

6 voters for this but the last song to fall short of 3 figures. It’s a very nice bit of psychedelic rock - again I’m just not sure there’s enough bite to the actual song for it to stand out.

Hey Bulldog is great, but just fell short of my points - though It did make my top 40 recently!

Dear Prudence is sweet, but I heard Siouxsie & The banshess' version first, bought it, topped my charts, so this was almost sounding like a demo for me when I first heard it. I idolise the Siouxsie version, but do rate the Lennon original - just not quite enough....

A 1965 track from “Rubber Soul” with quite an unusual structure and a Mediterranean feel. I particularly enjoy the tortured sounding middle 8 section, the intake of breath after the word “girl” and the instrumental outro.

This is the first of my own votes to drop (now wishing I’d given it 11 to fit the pattern tongue.gif ). And a big 1st loss for Jim there. Poor Jade with 5 in a row dropping out though! ohmy.gif

Posted by: jimwatts 11th April 2024, 09:56 PM

The first loss from my votes is perhaps not coincidentally the first from the original "Red" album - 'Old Brown Shoe' is the only loss from the original "Blue" album so far, but I always thought it bordered on the filler category. I got both albums for Christmas in 1997 - 'Girl' is a world away from some of the tracks before it with its structure, wistful guitar and lyrics about mortality.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 11th April 2024, 09:59 PM

Hey Bulldog and Dear Prudence are my favourites so far, I prefer Siouxsie's cover of the latter but this one's lovely too and the former has a great riff and I'd have had that a fair bit higher!

'Girl' is definitely one of my favourites from Rubber Soul so I'm glad it was included on the compilation - a pre-cursor of interesting soundscapes that would be more prominent on future albums.

Girl was probably the closest to making my votes out of those that have dropped out recently.

Siouxsie's version of Dear Prudence is vastly superior to the original imo and it's not often you can say that about a Beatles cover.

Fully on board with the love of Siouxsie's take on Prudence, which is one of my favourite covers ever.

A song written and led vocally by Paul, included on “Abbey Road”. It was a single in some countries but not the UK or US. It has more of a bluesy New Orleans inspired feel to it than most Beatles songs.

Paul said he actually wanted the vocals on this to sound hoarse, and so he came into the studio every day for a week until his voice was tired. I think the end result works well - I like the contrast between his gruff style in the chorus and his smoother style in the verses.

Another “White Album” song, which was a chart topping single in some countries but not the UK or US. A cover by Scottish band (The) Marmalade reached #1 in the UK. The Paul penned track has a Jamaican ska flavour. John reportedly disliked it, and it has been dismissed as a rather lightweight Beatles song.

I loved this as a child and I still think it’s good fun although it didn’t make my votes.

Another Paul track here, from 1966 included on “Revolver”. It’s a homage to the Motown sound with horn accompaniment. A cover by Cliff Bennett And The Rebel Rousers reached #6 in the UK.

It’s certainly a very soulful song, and I like the contrast between the warm and lyrical verses and the agitated chorus. It had 3 very big fans here but very little else.

I quite like Oh Darling, even if not one of the best tracks on Abbey Road. Got a great doo-wop sound, Oblah-Dee Oblah-Dah isn't quite as bad as it's reputation suggests but definitely not an essential from them x

Ob la di a childhood fave and still fun. Got To Get You Into my life a resl loss though. A usa hit in 1976 while the uk opted for back in the ussr and the Motown vibes made it sound pretty cool even in the mid 70s

Yet another Paul song here, although John helped with the middle 8. It was included on “Rubber Soul” in December 1965, and The Overlanders reached #1 in the UK with a cover in early 1966.

I was fascinated by the French lyrics as a child, and I still think it’s a lovely wistful ballad with bursts of emotion in the “I love you…” sections.

Another predominantly Paul song from “Rubber Soul” here, included as the album’s opening track. On hearing the original lyrics Paul had written for the tune John dismissed them as “too soft” and they came up with the quirky car themed tale. The track combines a hard rock style vocal in the verses with an otherwise quite jazzy track.

This is the first song to receive votes from more than half the participants, but didn’t make anyone’s top 20.

This was recorded in 1969 during the “Let It Be” sessions, but was left off the album and instead included as the B side to “Get Back”. Like the accompanying A side it features Billy Preston on keyboard. The lyrics are a direct plea from John to Yoko Ono.

The instrumental sections, which I think are the strongest feature of the track, are inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s “Albatross”. They certainly have a similar warm and luxurious feel to them.

This is the only song in the rate that was written by Ringo, though there are a couple of others fronted by him. He only wrote 2 songs for The Beatles in total in fact, the other being “Don’t Pass Me By” from the “White Album”. This was included on “Abbey Road” and released as a single in a few countries.

Aww it may not be one of the greatest pieces of music we’ll be encountering here but I do think it’s such a sweet and joyous little number, delivered in Ringo’s slightly unrefined but endearing and carefree way.

This was originally recorded as a home demo by John in 1977, and in 1995 the other 3 got together to record a studio version and the track was co-produced by Jeff Lynne. It was done as part of the “Anthology” project, which included a documentary and a compilation album. The single reached #2 in the UK and #6 in the US.

This received points from 10 voters but mostly fairly low scores. There’s certainly a big difference in the quality of John’s vocals on the final track on this and “Now And Then”, reflecting the advances in technology over the intervening 28 years. Despite that I find it a very beautiful and wistful track.

This was included on “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band”, and was the second song by George fully written in the Indian classical style after “Love You To” on “Revolver”. George recorded the song without the rest of the band using various traditional instruments including the sitar and the tabla. On the 2006 “Love” album of remixes this was mashed up quite successfully with John’s Indian inspired song “Tomorrow Never Knows”.

Despite some big supporters this only received points from 6 voters, and becomes the first song to exit from Disc 1 of the blue album.

'Within You Without You' is brilliant wub.gif I was so pleased that it was a good discovery for others/already loved by some on SyncTube too. I'm a sucker for psychedelic George <3

I feel like 'Free As A Bird' has been on my mind more than ever recently with the 'Now And Then' release completing the intended 90s trilogy and it popping up on '90s TOTP repeats now too. The Jeff Lynne stamp is evident but I do really like it, even if the vocals aren't quite as clean as on their final release.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 15th April 2024, 10:03 PM

I'm guessing it'll be their last two number 1s coming up tomorrow, they are pretty weak links in that field, or maybe I'm forgetting something x

Within You Without You was one I didn't know previously, and was a really nice discovery with some great Eastern influences from George. Octopus's Garden is iconic as well, made even more wholesome by the fact it was written to help Ringo to escape hostilities going on in the group.

This was their first official UK #1 (although most of the charts published at the time that did not become the official one listed “Please Please Me” as a #1), but only reached #41 in the US. George Martin said that he asked them to bring them another song as good as “Please Please Me” and this is what they brought. The song didn’t appear on any of the original studio albums.

I’m surprised all the early singles have made it this far as they’re sometimes considered to be a bit cheesy and lightweight, but I think this shows that there is still quite a bit of love for them.

Having had their 1st UK #1, we now have their last for 54 years. It was a non album single in 1969 and chronicles the events surrounding John and Yoko’s wedding. It was recorded by John and Paul without their other bandmates. The crucifixion reference led to it being banned by some radio stations.

The style of this is more like an old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll ballad from 10 years prior than a late 60s Beatles song, but if nothing else it’s interesting as an account of John’s troubles at the time.

Paul said “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys was an inspiration for this ballad included on “Revolver”. It’s a particularly atmospheric track with multi-tracking and layered backing vocals, and George’s strumming having been given an echo effect.

A record 12 votes for this, but it suffered from most of its scores being low. Art Garfunkel singled this out as his favourite ever pop song, describing it as “intoxicating” and music that “perfumes the atmosphere”.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 17th April 2024, 08:26 AM

Ballad Of John & Yoko is def under-rated, though I'm biased as I still recall it being fresh and new and daring and a quick unexpected release right after Get Back was huge, and just before Plastic Ono Band's peace anthem, so John & Yoko were culturally centre-stage at this point in the Summer of '69, with the Bed-In and all that. It would have seemed highly unlikely if anyone had said this would be their final number one for 54 years (we had no idea what was going on behind the scenes)....

Credited to The Beatles With Billy Preston, this is the only time they featured another artist on a single thanks to the latter’s electric piano contribution. Until “Now And Then” it was their only track to debut at the top of the UK singles chart, and it’s one of the few tracks featuring John on lead guitar. It was included as the closing track on “Let It Be”.

Stylistically the track is like an improvised blues jam, quite different to most Beatles records, and to some people’s taste more than others’.

This was written by George and included as the first track on “Revolver”. It’s a protest regarding the taxes faced by the band at the time, as their earnings made them liable for a 95% supertax (hence the line “There’s one for you, nineteen for me”). You can here the beginnings of Indian and psychedelic flavours in the guitar parts.

Although this track was very much a joint effort by all the group, the fact that it had been led by George and was the opening track on their best received album to date certainly led to him being taken more notice of as a songwriter.

A 1964 track from “A Hard Day’s Night”, this ballad was a #12 hit in the US but not a UK single. It’s mainly a Paul ballad though John contributed to the middle 8 and George provided the guitar riff.

It has been covered by various artists, including one by Kurt Cobain which was discovered and released in 2015.

I do agree that Ballad... is underrated for sure.

Was there no public hint whatsoever of the tensions in the band before the 1970 announcement from Paul then?

Not that I recall at all. I mostly remember get back being a big video exclusive and everyone getting excited about the concert on the roof, and then John & Yoko's bed-in which made headlines all over the world with older people tut tutting a lot about the state of the "daft boggers" and the double promos of Ballad Of John & Yoko and Give Peace A Chance. Paul's wedding made headlines, and writing Mary Hopkin's hit, and that was that really, it was all about John, the others not so much. Cheers PCF, really interesting to be able to put these things into the context of the time.

I suppose there was little to no precedent for groups splitting to all forge separate solo careers when they were still at the height of their commercial power back then so nobody would have been 'waiting' for them to split up.

This was released in 1967 as the lead on a 6 track EP in the UK, and an LP in the US. 2 of the other 5 tracks from the EP were included on the blue album. It’s primarily Paul written and includes ringmaster calls, a trumpet fanfare and traffic noises.

For me this isn’t a track that particularly stands up on its own, though it works brilliantly as an album introduction. Some clearly love it though, and the same can be said of another track still to come.

A 1965 track included on “Rubber Soul”, which was a #3 hit single in the US. It’s one of the earliest Beatles songs to be entirely not about love, and is an early example of John’s philosophical writing. The song is also featured to describe a character in the “Yellow Submarine” film.

I loved this as a child and as a daydreamer I felt like I had a real connection with it. I still absolutely love it lyrically, though musically there’s nothing very out of the box about it.

The less said about the Magical Mystery Tour movie the better kink.gif but I love the collection of songs that accompanies it - agreed the titular track works best in a full EP/album listen

Magical Mystery Tour is my favourite of their more ‘novelty’ songs, I’ve always found it to be really fun and uplifting, plus it’s got a real sense of propulsion to it that I agree works really well as an album opener.

Their second hit in early 1963 after “Love Me Do” peaked at #17 first time round. At the time there was no “official chart”, and most of the charts at the time showed “Please Please Me” as a #1. However on the Record Retailer chart eventually chosen as the official chart it was a multi week #2 blocked by Frank Ifield and then Cliff Richard. It was a US #3 on re-release.

The track started out as a Roy Orbison style slower ballad, but evolved into an upbeat, straightforward pop song with an endearing harmonica introduction.

Their debut single in October 1962 which only reached #17 but had a very long chart run. It later reached #4 as a 20th anniversary re-release. In the US it was only released as a single in 1964 once Beatlemania had well and truly taken hold, and became their 4th #1.

And so by the first 2 hits neatly land back to back. Like “Please Please Me” this features harmonica, unusual in a pop song at the time, and was a joint composition by John and Paul.

Love the intro as well! The 2023 mix of 'Love Me Do' that is attached to 'Now And Then' was a timely reminder of it in the run up to this rate.

oops 2 big losses for me in MMT and Nowhere Man, Taxman not so fussed about - but George was moaning about too much tax (95% of income of the rich at the time was tax, so the fabs weren't anywhere near as rich as people imagined they were - partly why they opted to start Apple as a record company/label, I suspect). That backfired on them badly....!

Magical Mystery Tour was blocked from the top spot by....Hello Goodbye! I still say the top-selling actual track for a couple of weeks is therefore I Am The Walrus - as it was simultaneously at 1 and 2 as B side and EP track. Had it been "streaming" era rules, it would have been a Beatles top 3 laugh.gif

This is the title track on what remains their biggest selling album. It appears twice on the album, as the opening track segueing into “With A Little Help From My Friends”, and as the penultimate track segueing into “A Day In The Life”. Paul conceived the idea of the album being a role play in which they each assume an alter ego in the lonely hearts club band. The orchestra used on the track is the same as that used for “A Day In The Life”.

Again I didn’t vote for this myself as I don’t really see it a track that works independently. That said it’s a fun and unique piece of escapism, and a track that has been covered by Jimi Hendrix and Robbie Williams among others.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 22nd April 2024, 03:54 PM

Sgt Pepper isnt a proper song to me, it's a snippet. In the same way that the Abbey Road medley is a trio of snippets. Would have preferred a proper 3 minute song to start off the album, with a minor repeat fade at the end to bookend, if they had to do it....(and they didn't) teresa.gif

This was their last hit until a few months ago, and it’s the last non red and blue album track to appear. John recorded demos of this in 1979 and 1980. In 1994 Yoko gave Paul demos of 4 tracks: “Grow Old With Me”, “Free As A Bird”, “Real Love” and “Now And Then”. This and “Free As A Bird” were completed in 1995 and “Now And Then” in 2023: nothing seems to have come of the first track on that list.

A Tom Odell cover of this was featured in the 2014 John Lewis Christmas advert. It’s a sweet wrap yourself in a warm blanket kind of song so I can see why it was chosen for that.

Posted by: Jade 22nd April 2024, 06:21 PM

A “Revolver” track and part of a double A side UK #1, this was written primarily as a children’s song by Paul and included experimentation with sound effects. It inspired the 1968 animated film of the same name. It’s the second of three songs here with a Ringo lead vocal.

I think a notable feature of the 4 double A side singles released by The Beatles is that in all cases the 2 tracks are very complementary, none more so than “Yellow Submarine” / “Eleanor Rigby”. This is the first of the 8 double A side tracks to appear.

Posted by: gooddelta 23rd April 2024, 01:53 PM

Oh dear, I'm going to be tumbling down the leaderboard now.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is iconic to me, I know it's essentially a short album opener but I love what's there and it sets the scene for what's to come.

Real Love is a beautiful song, if they'd released that for the Christmas 1995 market instead of Free As A Bird I wonder how it would have done. I love Tom Odell's cover too. I'd love to hear them remaster the vocals on these two songs with the tech they used to make Now And Then sound so good.

Yellow Submarine is wonderful, a classic that I heard such a lot as a child.

A non album single and UK #1 composed by Paul, this was a surprising change of direction after all the psychedelia of the previous couple of years. Its style is “boogie-woogie”, a type of 1920s blues rock and Paul said he was thinking of Fats Domino when he wrote it. John assisted with the lyrics about an exhausted mother.

This sat well with a rock ‘n’ roll revival in the UK in 1968. However its official chart run was quite short and it only peaked at #2 on the rival Melody Maker chart, and only at #4 in the US.

This is a Paul track included on the 1967 “Magical Mystery Tour” EP. The film of the same name included a video of the song with pictures of Paul on a hill in France.

It’s one of my favourite Beatles ballads: like “Nowhere Man” it can be seen as an outsider’s anthem, and I love its folky style with the flutes and the slightly dizzy swirling feel to it. It had some big supporters but the 8 zeroes really hurt it.

Posted by: dandy* 24th April 2024, 10:48 AM

Yellow Submarine I think of every time I go to Puerto De Mogan on Gran Canaria - it has an actual yellow submarine for trips to look at sea life - but it's total 8-year-old John nostalgia, Liverpool era. Lady Madonna is RAF Lincolnshire countryside incessant boogie blues, and both tunes sound better in the revamped form than they previously did. Fool On The Hill is one of those lesser known Macca gems, what a ballad, beautifully sad, much-covered at the time but it needs something to give it some more love these days. A film spot would do nicely...

Another “Revolver” track; this one was primarily written by John. From 1966; it’s very much an early venture into psychedelia with George’s backwards guitar parts. John is reported to have spent a long time in bed, whether just sleeping or under the influence.

Another one of their very finest ballads for me here, I love the vague drowsy feeling about it and the way it conveys the sheer joy of just having a lie in once in a while. Despite some strong support half the voters slept on this one and it falls just short of the Top 40.

'I'm Only Sleeping' is wonderful Revolver psychedelia wub.gif I did sneak 'Yellow Submarine' in but I wish that had been confined to its film soundtrack and swapped out with 'Rain' on Revolver.

'The Fool On The Hill' is a standout on Magical Mystery Tour - both lyrically and with its flutes and recorder sound.

This is the second track after the title song on “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. I had forgotten that the pair of songs was released as a double A side single in 1978 but only reached #69. Of course “With A Little Help From My Friends” has topped the UK charts no fewer than 3 times, with covers by Joe Cocker, Wet Wet Wet and Sam & Mark, but I don’t think it’s a very hot take to say that the original is much better than any of those.

This is the highest lead vocal appearance for Ringo here - technically he isn’t a very good singer but there’s an innocence and sincerity about the way he performs that I find very charming.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 25th April 2024, 03:56 PM

for me it's Joe Cocker - that was the first version I heard, and after the exhausting performance he did on Top Of The Pops, a showstopper, Ringo's original just sounds so....twee (though classy, unlike the other 2 chart-topper covers) ohmy.gif ohmy.gif A bit of fun, but not even his best record - that's Photograph, Back Off Booglaoo, It Don't Come Easy.

This ballad was included on “Help!” in 1965. A version by English folk music group The Silkie, who had been signed by The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, was a UK hit and reached the Top 10 in America.

John said that the track was heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, and the rhythm and instrumental setup are very like a Bob song though it uses a flute instead of his usual harmonica. I think it’s one of The Beatles’ most rawly emotional ballads.

Joe Cockers version of 'With A Little Help..' is the best but their one is very good too!

This is the first track with 15 voters, and the first of the 5 Christmas #1 tracks to appear. John wrote the riff while recording “Eight Days A Week” a couple of months earlier, and kept playing it between takes before deciding to go away and write a song for it. As they’d finished the album “Beatles For Sale” it ended up being a non album single.

The feedback note at the beginning of this was a first for a rock record and must have been seen as very experimental at the time.

This is a song from the “White Album”. Multiple versions were recorded, including the best known rocky version, a slower bluesy version called “Revolution 1” and the abstract blend of sounds and noises called “Revolution 9” which doesn’t really bear any relation to the song people know.

The Beatles rarely involved themselves with politics, “Taxman” being an exception. This was a response by John to some of the political left at the time putting pressure on them to be revolutionaries.

'I Feel Fine' is grand.

Posted by: Jade 26th April 2024, 02:26 PM

'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' is gorgeous, such a tender and moving John ballad wub.gif I find the Help! project underrated in terms of Beatles album discourse - it'd probably scrape into my top 5 of theirs, plenty of great songs even if not quite as ground-breaking as later work.

'With A Little Help From My Friends' has grown on me exponentially over the years, I find it really charming these days.

'Revolution' is awesome - what an attention-grabbing, unhinged intro *.* I used to be obsessed with one of the slower versions of it as well, 'Revolution 1 Take 20', as someone used the entirety of it in the background of their Beatles collection video on YouTube - it was instantly lodged in my brain. That version was 11 minutes long and I apparently have 70 scrobbles of it on my last.fm, which I think would've all come from my iPod during sixth form days, the fixation was real laugh.gif

I absolutely love the riff throughout 'I Feel Fine' and that intro feedback is indeed a standout feature too <3

Posted by: Popchartfreak 27th April 2024, 09:49 AM

deep into Beatles classics now! You've Got To Hide Your Love Away was written about gay manager Brian Epstein, apparently, which adds pathos given what happened to him, and it certainly had an emotional impact on me in my teens, there weren't any other obvious songs offering support until Killing Of Georgie in 1976 (thanks Rod).

I Feel Fine I bought in 1976, amongst the Beatles chart invasion as all the singles were out with new (awful) sleeve covers - plus Yesterday for the first time. I was mad on those riffs and the intro! Revolution lived in the shadow of Hey Jude, but it got some airplay in the 60's, It was the Blue Album Xmas 1975 that got me into it big time. Rifftastic, and John as always had his finger on the pulse of what needed saying at the time.

This is a 1963 Paul track included on “With The Beatles”. While not a single it received considerable airplay, and was subsequently released as the title track of an EP including 2 tracks from “Please Please Me” and 2 from “With The Beatles”.

Although it’s very much a product of the more primitive early Beatles sound, I think this uncomplicated ballad has a lot of heart to it, and it’s done very well here for an early non hit.

It’s a double of early songs today, as the lead single from “A Hard Day’s Night” lands here. This was a #1 in many countries including the UK and US, and remains their 3rd biggest pure seller in the UK with over 1.5 million copies, the 4th biggest seller of the 60s and one of the 40 biggest selling singles of all time.

“Can’t Buy Me Love” is certainly a stonker of a rock ‘n’ roll song, but there’s a clear evolution between it and “A Hard Day’s Night” and I think this marks the end of their early phase before they really began to push the envelope.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 28th April 2024, 06:29 PM

me dad bought this one so a soundtrack to my Liverpool life and beyond, and yes I agree it's the end of the innocent "I love you" songwriting phase and onwards into cynicism, sex and drugs and rock n roll and politics - along with more interesting takes on love and life and death and humour.

This is an “Abbey Road” track that was only finished the last time The Beatles were in the studio together in August 1969. It’s a very unusual, nearly 8 minute track with blues and hard rock sections and changing time signatures. The track has been described as a precursor to heavy metal.

No other track in the Top 50 received as few as 8 voters, and this very experimental track clearly has well and truly divided the crowd, with huge love from its big supporters but very little else.

Congratulations to gooddelta who I believe is the only participant to have voted for all of the Top 33!

"sprawling" is my take on that one, but then I'm not a huge fan of Abbey Road in comparison to earlier Fabs albums. Helter Skelter is my Beatles Heavy Metal track of choice, if that's not a blueprint I don't know what is (with credit to You Really Got Me, too), though obv that was never going to get added to the Blue album...

This was written by Paul and included on the “White Album”. It is thought to allude to the civil right movement in the US, but can also be seen to have a simpler, more literal meaning. It’s a solo performance by Paul with only an acoustic guitar and some foot tapping and bird sounds.

“Blackbird” has become a favourite among the ballads of The Beatles and is one of the most coveted songs of all time; notably this year Beyoncé included a version on “Cowboy Carter”.

Posted by: gooddelta 29th April 2024, 03:23 PM

Oh, that seems surprisingly low for Blackbird, it's interesting that it has become so popular among their canon since becoming available digitally, but I can't say it's not deserved.

I've heard many lovely covers of it and many less successful attempts.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 29th April 2024, 04:57 PM

I never knew the Civil Rights background of it (though it was the era of Civil Right songs) so that passed me by entirely and I just took it literally, a mildly pleasant song about a bird with a broken wing, and that was about that. It could have easily fitted comfortably on McCartney and sounded totally in place. Whenever I tried to rescue birds with broken wings and the like they always ended up dying to my sorrow - being 10 years old, and not having the internet to tell you what to do in those days... sad.gif

As mentioned before this was one of the four tracks whose demo was given to the surviving Beatles by Yoko in the ‘90s. John’s voice was extracted using machine-learning assisted audio restoration technology. The single was released with a new stereo mix of “Love Me Do”, meaning that it could be seen to bookend the band’s history.

It’s impressive to see how the technology and the quality of the production have moved on from the likes of “Free As A Bird” to this. It is hard to compare this with the old classics, but I think most people saw it as a fitting final single, and most participants did include it in their votes here.

Posted by: Roba. 30th April 2024, 02:57 PM

Pretty strong result for 'Now and Then'. I feel a few of those that didn't vote for it is because it's too recent maybe.

Posted by: Severin 30th April 2024, 03:36 PM

Personally, not an admirer of Now And Then to be honest. It's nice enough and was good to see them have a hit with it, but I didn't think the song was much cop. Same as I felt about Free as a Bird and Real Love. They sound to me like what they are - songs Lennon didn't think were good enough. Now and Then's the best of the three though.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 30th April 2024, 04:19 PM

Now & Then definitely sounds better than the other two lost tracks, if just because of the clear advances of technology to make it happen. It's not an all time classic, but I did throw it some points as it was a bit of a grower and it was just such a unique and wonderful chart moment.

That's a great placing for I Want You (She's So Heavy) given it's a non single, probably my favourite from Abbey Road, great precursor to heavy metal and prog rock.

This was originally recorded in January 1969, but in April 1970 Phil Spector added to the production with rich orchestration (to Paul’s displeasure) before the song was included on “Let It Be”. In the US it was a released as a single and became their final #1. Will Young and Gareth Gates reached #1 with a (rather over-sung) version in 2002.

This was a childhood favourite for me and I still like it a lot. I’ve always liked the big and warm production: my favourite part is the “Many times I’ve been alone…” passage.

Adore Long & Winding Road, many Fabs fans prefer the non-strings version, but not me - when I was once pressed on the issue I said "I like strings, what can I say!?" (using strings as a reason to not like something immediately wipes out all classical and film music and show-tunes laugh.gif ) To me it's a summer of fond memories in Singapore as we bid farewell to The Beatles from afar, and the lyrics relate to going home. Not that I wanted to go back to the UK, but missing some things about home is a thing. As is feeling right out of touch with what's going on there.

This is the opening track on the “White Album”. It’s a parody of Chuck Berry’s “Back In The USA” about feeling relieved to be back in the Soviet Union. The bridge section celebrates girls from various parts of the U.S.S.R. parodying “California Girls” by the Beach Boys. It was released as a single in 1976 to promote a new compilation album and reached the Top 20.

Musically it’s a traditional rock ‘n’ roll style song. Paul deliberately made the lead vocal sound a bit like Jerry Lee Lewis, and there are Beach Boys style harmonies. A composite drum track was used as the track was recorded without Ringo who had temporarily left due to criticism of his drumming.

Oops me not voting for I saw Her Standing There. Never heard it until after John Lennon's murder when the live version B side of an Elton John single was pushed out as an A side hit as it had Elton & John singing this on his last ever public appearance on stage - the one where he got back with Yoko. At which point I though "s'ok, but nothing special". Hearing the original, yes it's better than, but it was always a bit of fluff for me.

Back In The USSR, though, went big on in 1976 and is the main Beatles song that sounds great in a club, along with twist & Shout, as you can dance to it. Love all those Beach Boys/rock n roll references, but twisted for the Cold War days commentary. The USSR was not a fun place at all....

This was a non album single, with “I Am The Walrus” as the B side. It was the first single release following the death of Brian Epstein, and was the UK Christmas #1 in 1967. John originally pushed for “I Am The Walrus” to be the A side before accepting “Hello, Goodbye” was more commercial, so it’s interesting that the former has done better here.

“Hello, Goodbye” has received mixed reviews, both at the time and over the years. In a way what is amazing about it is that it manages to take banal lyrics and quite an ordinary musical structure and make something so compelling.

This remains the 9th biggest single ever in the UK for pure sales, having shifted more than 1.9 million copies. Just look at that chart run with 18 straight weeks in the Top 3 including 2 separate runs at #1. On 4 April 1964 it was one of the five Beatles songs that held the whole Top 5 in the US.

John wanted to create something as rousing as “All Shook Up” when writing it, and I think it’s fair to say he achieved that. This was the song that propelled The Beatles to full scale superstardom and even though it isn’t a favourite for most of us its cultural impact cannot be underestimated.

This July 1967 non album single encapsulated the ideals of the summer of love, and was their contribution to “Our World”, the first ever live multinational television link. The song opens with an excerpt from the French national anthem and includes an orchestral arrangement by George Martin.

It seems fitting that this appears next to “She Loves You”, as John sings “She loves you yeah! yeah! yeah!” during the long coda, which includes references to various other songs and musical works.

2 hippie pop anthems major faves for me there. I cant separate my love for them from being 9 years old and loving those tunes. A peace anthem and a joyous romp with a tinge if sadness that doesnt let up 1967 was Peak Beatles for me. She Loves You became a caricature of itself and Beatlemania in pop culture of the time so i can never get over that but its still fun.

“Day Tripper” was recorded during the “Rubber Soul” sessions, but released as a double A side non album single with “We Can Work It Out” in December 1965. The single became their 3rd consecutive UK Christmas #1. In the US “Day Tripper” reached #5 as a stand alone track.

The double A side is another example of a pair of tracks complementing each other well, as “Day Tripper” is a more rocky song with soul influences written by John while the other side, which finishes higher here, is more poppy and by Paul.

Other than “Baby It’s You” this is the only cover version in the rate. It was written in 1961 and the most notable prior version is by the Isley Brothers. A later version by Brian Poole And The Tremeloes reached #4 in the UK in 1963. The Beatles version wasn’t a UK single but reached #2 in the US.

The track was recorded at the end of the “Please Please Me” sessions and is notable for John’s incredibly hoarse voice. He was ashamed of the performance at the time but his version has come to be regarded as the definitive version of one of the greatest early rock ‘n’ roll songs.

This is their 2nd biggest pure seller and one of the 20 biggest ever in the UK with more than 1.8 million sales. It was their first Billboard #1 and the first of their UK Christmas #1. The song was very much a joint writing effort by John and Paul, and their first song to use multi-track recording.

Here this is the highest placed song before “A Hard Day’s Night”, meaning all the early material is now out. There are now also several other voters joining gooddelta in having voted for everything that is left.

Posted by: dandy* 5th May 2024, 10:09 PM

Twist and Shout is way too high for me. It’s really not my type of thing at all.

I Want to Hold Your Hand is definitely one of their best early singles, I felt it was quite a step up when I listened to vote.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 5th May 2024, 11:14 PM

Their early material isn't on the same level of their experimental stuff, but I Want To Hold Your Hand is probably my favourite of them, a very timeless song. The German version bangs too x

Posted by: Popchartfreak 6th May 2024, 08:48 AM

Day Tripper is great but always preferred t'other side, while I want To Hold Your Head was one dad bought so I grew up with it - in the US this was the monster biggest-selling frenzy-causing scene-changing iconic pop culture moment of 1960's US history, so it's only right it should be the highest-charting of the early stuff.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 6th May 2024, 08:51 AM

Twist & Shout, though, was huge at the time thanks to EP's getting treated like singles and along with Let's Twist Again spearheaded that dance-obsession that gripped the UK in 1962/3. John's vocals are amazing and lift the recording up from great to classic.

This is included on “Let It Be”, though the first version of it appeared on a 1969 compilation album. It was considered by John to be one of his lyrically best and most poetic ballads. It was influenced by Transcendental Meditation, and the Sanskrit phrase “Jai guru deva om” loosely translates as “all hail the divine guru”. In 2008 NASA transmitted the song as an interstellar message in the direction of Polaris.

As a heavy daydreamer this has been a big favourite for me both as a child and an adult. Chartjack2’s 48 points from the last part would have carried it into the Top 20 but alas it falls just shy.

This was written by John and included on the “Magical Mystery Tour EP” and the film of the same name. He was partly inspired by Lewis Carroll’s similarly nonsensical poem “The Walrus And The Carpenter” in writing this.

Here it’s the highest placed song from the EP which peaked at #2 in the UK, and it was held off by “Hello Goodbye” which had “I Am The Walrus” as its B side, meaning that it had the unique honour of featuring in the UK #1 and #2 simultaneously.

This would also have been in the Top 20 had chartjack2’s votes counted.

This was largely a Paul written song and their 10th consecutive UK #1 from an official release in 1966. It was the last new song to be featured on their final tour.

The song is notable for the opening statement where the voices come in one by one in harmony, and the boosted bass guitar sound. It also sees them moving into more diverse lyrical subject matters, and Paul apparently based it on a letter he had received from a budding novelist.

This was mainly written by John with contributions from Paul, and appears on “Rubber Soul”. The introspective lyrics were Dylan inspired, and the sitar part played by George was the first appearance of that instrument on a Western recording and marked the beginning of the group’s and especially George’s association with Indian classical music. It topped the Australian charts when released as a single with “Nowhere Man”.

I love the gentle simplicity of this, both with the straightforward repeated tune and the delightfully mundane lyrics, and it’s surely up there with the group’s finest ballads. It has done very well here especially with its top end votes, receiving half a dozen scores of 40 or more and 2 podium scores.

Like its double A side single twin “Day Tripper” this was recorded during the “Rubber Soul” sessions but not included on the album. The double A side was the 7th biggest selling single of the 1960s in the UK and The Beatles’ 5th highest after “She Loves You”, “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “I Feel Fine”. “Hey Jude” is now the only pure million seller remaining in the rate.

Paul is thought to have written the song about his relationship with Jane Asher. However John wrote the “Life is very short…” bridge section which might be seen to contrast with Paul’s optimistic message.

This is the highest of the 5 Christmas #1 tracks and the first song to have received points from all 18 voters, something which even some of the very top tracks didn’t achieve as we’ll see.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 8th May 2024, 04:35 PM

All classic tracks there, love I Am The Walrus especially, but am surprised at Paperback Writer being so popular - at the time it was far and away the least-known song of their 60's hits, I genuinely don't recall hearing it at all until the 70's when it was used as the theme tune to Read All About It book review show, whereas I knew all of the other Beatles singles bar Strawberry Fields (little airplay) and Come Together (Something got the all the fame). In 1976, though, it was the 5th best-selling Beatles single behind Yesterday (top 10), Hey Jude (12), Back In The USSR (top 20), and Get Back (top 30).

Nearly 50 years on, here at least it beats 2 of those singles - but drops behind some others. For info, Strawberry Fields was top 40 (Penny lane not listed) and a bunch of others were in the 51-75 range had they been publishing charts that long then.

This was a John written song as well as the title track of both their 3rd studio album and their 1st feature film. It was the first time that both a single and album by the same artist topped both the UK and US charts. Peter Sellers reached the UK Top 20 in 1965 with a comic spoken cover version.

The opening chord, played by George on a Rickenbacker 12 string guitar, is one of the most discussed song openings of all time, and the closing instrumental part is also much discussed and inspired bands such as The Byrds. For me the single represents a significant step forward from the band from catchy unchallenging pop-rock to something much more adventurous.

Posted by: jimwatts 8th May 2024, 07:37 PM

Aww, 'A Hard Day's Night' was just outside my votes - the opening chord is iconic, I just prefer the melodies to some of their unchallenging songs from the year before. I think I voted for everything else in the top 20 ('Norwegian Wood' 19th in my vote as well as the result).

'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' (+48)
'I Want You (She’s So Heavy)' (+46)
'Across The Universe' (+40)
'I Am The Walrus' (+38)

wub.gif a real mix of sounds there, from the nonsensical thrills of 'I Am The Walrus' to the intense hard rock of 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' - albeit, with a casual Latin style section thrown in. Love how much of a sonic shift 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' is when you do a full discography listen - what a beauty that is.

Posted by: Severin 9th May 2024, 12:47 PM

Norwegian Wood is really very special for me as it holds some very specific memories, as well as being a gorgeous piece.

This had originally been planned for the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club” album, but instead was released as part of a double A side single with “Strawberry Fields Forever” in early 1967 to satisfy the demand for a new release. It did top the Melody Maker chart but on the Record Retailer chart was blocked by Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Release Me”, leading to claims that the Beatles’ bubble had finally burst as it was their first official release since “Please Please Me” to miss #1.

It’s a Paul song about his Liverpool childhood, referring to real places and was the more commercial and favourably received of the double A side tracks at the time. This is the 2nd of 6 tracks that received points from every voter.

Posted by: My... WAP?? 9th May 2024, 07:40 PM

The other half is naturally my favourite given my votes but Penny Lane is also excellent in its own way.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 10th May 2024, 10:04 AM

Norwegian Wood is just gorgeous and very "John", fell in love with it off the Red album in 1976 when I got it for christmas. Hard Days's Night brings back memories of Chesham-living and seeing the film at the pictures. Chesham hasn't changed at all since 1964/5 (OK a few new minor housing estates, but not much else, I still found my way round the old neighbourhood no problems at all last year), and the record still sounds great. Penny Lane, and I'm on the rural Isle Of Anglesey and adoring this Beatles record. Penny Lane was already well-known in Liverpool, where we'd just moved from and I no doubt would still have had my Scouse accent. Still one of my all-time fave Beatles records love it.

This is a “Rubber Soul” song written by both John and Paul. George Martin played the distinctive piano solo, which was sped up to sound more like a harpsichord.

Thiis was named the greatest song of all time by “Mojo” magazine, and has appeared in the Top 100 songs ever created by “Rolling Stone” magazine both times they have run the poll of experts. Of course it’s simple musically (yet beautiful), but it’s the lyrics that for me are so incredibly special and encapsulate the feelings you might have for someone special in your life, whether it’s a significant other, a parent, child or a good friend.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 13th May 2024, 09:34 AM

I loved In My Life when I was younger - I first heard it covered by Twiggy of all people on some TV show or other - and the lyrics are incredibly sad. Which is why I can't bear to listen to it now I'm older and the number of people who have died that I love gets larger and larger with each passing year. I have the same response to Imagine - played at funerals, don't want to be reminded of that. In My Life is a very mature song for someone so young though, much like Jackson Browne's song These Days, 17 when he wrote it, it works best when covered by someone much older (like Glen Campbell).

Unusually for them this was included both on a double A side single, alongside “Come Together”, and on a studio album, namely “Abbey Road”. Its presence on the album weakened the single’s performance in the UK where it peaked at #4, but it was a US #1.

It was the first time a George written and led song was an A side single, and is thought to mark the point where he really emerged as a songwriter of Lennon And McCartney’s calibre. It’s an incredibly powerful ballad and the “I don’t know” climax on the bridge is my favourite part.

Here gooddelta becomes only the 2nd voter to lose their 50 pointer, after …ready for it’s, “Hey Bulldog”, went out very early.

Posted by: gooddelta 13th May 2024, 08:30 PM

Gosh, I wouldn't have expected Something to miss the top ten, an incredible piece of music. That unmistakeable guitar, the verses, the chorus - all magic.

George was definitely showing his strengths by this point, I would agree that he was matching Lennon and McCartney's contributions toe to toe by the late 60s.

Posted by: Jade 13th May 2024, 08:38 PM

'Something' is gorgeous, one of my favourite ever love songs wub.gif Pattie Boyd had some incredible tunes written about her as 'Layla' is right up there for me too.

'Penny Lane' and 'In My Life' are good recent dropouts also - the latter always makes me think of the first time I saw The Bootleg Beatles live, as it was played as a tribute to George Martin who had very recently passed away at the time. Listening to this rate there’s so many songs I wish I’d voted for which simply shows the genius of this band. ‘In My Life’ is beautiful I mean how did a person in their twenties like Lennon write such a mature song at his age, pure genius. You do take a lot for granted with the Beatles but we should be thankful they have left so many great pieces of music for the people to listen to during the centuries!

Also interesting in the voter divide between pre 65 songs and post 65 - I for one love the pure pop of 63 as much as the experimental stuff of 67! Enjoyable in their own ways!

I kinda missed Something a bit when it came out - newly in Singapore and we'd just moved into out first house, started new school and hadn't really got our stuff from the UK that we shipped over (not much, clothes and an old record player/radio) so I just caught occasional plays of it here and there and it was very nice but not eye-catching, a bit too MOR for my then-tastes, but it grew over the years once I'd gotten over all the millions of not-Beatles covers. No cover has ever been as good. It was My Sweet Lord that made me into a George songwriter fan - though I liked all of his songs I wasnt aware they were his songs until later on.

It’s back to back George as this song from the “White Album” lands here. The plaintive ballad was written after the group’s return from India and might be thought to lament the disharmony within the group or the state of the world generally. George’s friend Eric Clapton contributed to the recording. Originally it was going to be a simple acoustic track but in the end it was given a much heavier rock style production.

This received chartjack2’s belated 50 points, and the scores for the next few are so close that this would have come 8th with his votes counted. ohmy.gif It’s certainly a beautiful and mesmerising track.

In My Life is a very mature song for someone so young though, much like Jackson Browne's song These Days, 17 when he wrote it, it works best when covered by someone much older (like Glen Campbell).

Johnny Cash's version is particularly good.

Something is one of those songs that is obviously briiliant from whichever angle I look at it but yet it somehow leaves me completely cold.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 15th May 2024, 09:27 AM

The Clapton version never really did much for me, never a favourite, didn't really need Eric on it apart from calming band tensions. I was very much a fan of the Love Album alternate take version, though, a highlight of that project and a chart-topper for me, I think it gave the song more of a spotlight rather than God Clapton's (as he was revered at the time with Layla still on the way) guitar sound.

This John written song that opened “Abbey Road” and was the grittier double A side single twin of “Something”. It was inspired by counterculture figures speaking to him after he and Yoko had been joining anti Vietnam war protests, whose slogan was “Come together - join the party!”

The song’s bluesy style was the subject of a lawsuit for its similarity to Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me”, which no doubt inspired it. Ringo placed tea towels on the drums to create the distinctive damp sound.

This would also have reached the Top 10 including chartjack2’s votes.

Never got it either, rarely got radio plays and I first heard it when I bought the Blue album in 1975 and was unimpressed in comparison to other tracks. I liked it but didnt love it. It started to pick up in the 90's when Michael Jackson covered it (having bought The Beatles rights obv) and it's seems to have grown in the 21st century in stature - but still passes me by. This was primarily a John song, and was released as a single in April 1965 and later included on the “Help!” album. It’s another track with a distinctive riff played by George on the Rickenbacker 12 stringed guitar, and an interesting coda section.

Like “A Hard Day’s Night” from the previous year, it feels like a step forward from everything that went before, both lyrically with its more sophisticated theme and musically with more avant garde and complex instrumentation. It was also the first Beatles track to exceed 3 minutes.

Here it’s the 3rd of 6 songs to receive points from every voter.

Add me to the list of those that don't see the fuss around Come Together. It's fine but like popchartfreak says nobody discussed it much until the 90s. Although I wouldn't credit Jackson's version so much - that was actually recorded for his Bad album but slipped out quietly in 1988 on Moonwalker.
In my circles it got noticed more after McCartney, Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher recorded it as the Smokin' Mojo Filters for the Help project.

…and yet it crashes out in 10th due to also having more zeroes than anything else in the Top 20. nocheer.gif

I was asked to provide the commentary on this when it made the final 100 of the Buzzjack’s Favourite Song poll in the lounge last year, and I’ve copied that commentary here.

A Day In The Life” was the final track on the 1967 “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. The majority of the song was written by John Lennon but Paul McCartney contributed the middle “Woke up out of bed…” section. I believe it is the only track in the final 100 to have never been released as a single anywhere (even “Champagne Supernova” was released in some countries). John’s lyrics were inspired by news stories of the time, in particular Irish socialite Tara Browne’s death in a car crash. The line “I’d love to turn you on” was thought by some to be a drug reference, leading to the track being banned from BBC radio, but Lennon & McCartney denied that it was. This line was blended into two instrumental crescendo sections, conceived after the rest of the track and recorded using a 40 piece orchestra.

This track, along with “Strawberry Fields Forever” and a few others, really represent the zenith of the Beatles’ late ‘60s psychedelic period. I think it’s fair to say that most Beatles songs clearly bear the mark of one person, whether that’s John or Paul or George, and I love the fact that “A Day In The Life” really is combined effort by John and Paul. I also love the contrast between Paul’s part depicting mundane reality and the rest of the song representing a dream which is on the one hand peaceful and serene and on the other dark and disturbing.

Posted by: Severin 17th May 2024, 01:22 PM

I'm amazed that anyone wouldn't put this in their top 10 Beatles songs. I guess that's testament to the quality of the work but for me this really is flawless

Posted by: My... WAP?? 17th May 2024, 01:55 PM

'A Day In The Life' below 'Help!'? Oh boy...
At least it's top 10, but there was a while when it was my favourite song of all time.

Posted by: Severin 17th May 2024, 04:06 PM

I think when you place A Day in the Life within its historical context, it just goes to show what a completely groundbreaking and astonishing piece of work it is. It really is a masterpiece of writing, arrangement and production. Nobody had ever recorded anything quite like it before and it sits comfortably among the most influential songs of all time. With due respect to other acts like The Velvets, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Byrds, Hendrix etc, the entire late sixties music scene underwent a seismic shift in their wake, with A Day in the Life regularly cited as a point of inspiration.

Even to this day it still gets rated as one of the greatest songs of all time, and the juxtaposition from John's surrealistic parts to Paul's more traditional section only serves to make the song even more strange, dream like and otherworldy. The transition to and from that is exceptional too.

For many of my younger years I would casually dismiss The Beatles and much of the era as the music of my parents. Combined with my earliest exposure to music being Punk and Disco (and I didn't like Disco), The Beatles seemed like a relic for a different generation to cling to, even though their songs were always on the radio they seemed irrelevant when compared to all the Punk/New Wave and later Post Punk and New Romantic stuff that seemed so fresh and exciting.

But if you go back and look at their work with the benefit of histrical context and free from any prejudiced thoughts... boy were they a phenominal band when they went for it.

Ticket To Ride so close, a major influence on the sound of poprock at the time, and a key moment in Help! the movie, basically the first travelogue-frollicking-video. Loved it. Still sounds fresh.

I agree with the comments on A Day In The Life (and apply them to Sgt Pepper the album in general), ground-breaking, but I prefer other Lennon psychedelia tracks and I also was never that keen on the Paul bits. In the end I voted for favourites rather than on musical merit, have to go with my heart not my head, but oh my word that ending!

Posted by: Bjork 18th May 2024, 09:12 AM

Paul ruined it with his part, is there a Paul-free version of the song? biggrin.gif

I like Paul’s part of the song. I think it wouldn’t be as good without it as the contrast between those parts keeps the momentum going and keeps it interesting. I always saw it as a deliberate contrast between what’s happening out in the world and the more mundane day to day life of Paul’s part, it works really well imo

And so beating “A Day In The Life” by all of 1 point, with eight 40 plus scores and a maximum from WhoOdyssey, it’s this other psychedelic adventure, also from “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. An Elton John cover was a US #1 in 1974.

While many have thought it to be no coincidence that the title’s principal words abbreviate to “LSD”, the inspiration apparently was far more innocent, when John’s son Julian said his school drawing was of Lucy in the sky with diamonds. The track uses a Lowrey organ and an Indian tambura drone, distorted in the studio to create the sense of the imagination going somewhere unusual.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 19th May 2024, 10:33 PM

Lucy in the Sky... one of my absolute favourites, such a joyful psychedelic trip wub.gif A Day in the Life is also brilliant and obviously one of the most groundbreaking pieces of popular music there's ever been. I agree that the contrast between vocals is what makes it so good.

Help! above both of these is a bit questionable, it feels a bit of an odd one out in this top 10.

Posted by: Severin 20th May 2024, 01:38 AM

I agree that Help! being yet to appear seems odd but to me it sits right at the crossroads between them being a pop group who mainly wrote boy meets girl love song and them embracing more thoughtful subject matter. For a band like that to release a track that is essentially about depression and desperation, yet nailed to a great pop sensibility, was quite a leap back then.

I suspect it's done so well here because it has broad appeal, being appreciated by those who like the earlier sound and those who admire the later works too.

I really like it, even if I don't place it amongst their best but it is a milestone in their career and in John's writing, in the same way that Paperback Writer was for Paul.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 20th May 2024, 09:43 AM

Love Lucy In The Sky, it was one I heard now and again before Elton took it chart-bound in 1974 with help from John - they were palling around a lot in '74 and of course John's last public appearance on stage was at Elton's gig after he bet John Whatever Gets You Through The Night (with Elton on it) would top the US charts, his first-time and the last solo Beatle to do it.

The original version is still the greatest though, the imagery and sounds are wonderful and the chorus is top notch, and it was very 1967.

This was the title track for the 5th studio album in 1965 and the accompanying film, and both a UK and US #1. Bananarama reached #3 in the UK with a cover for Comic Relief in 1989.

John has said that he wrote it about his anxiety at The Beatles’ quick rise to fame, and it perhaps marked the beginning of him expressing more complex emotions in his songwriting. It’s the only pre 1966 single to make the Top 10 in these results, assisted by half a dozen top 10 rankings and a maximum from Roba., though a ballad from the same year is still to come.

Those who find this position too high for it will be pleased to know that with chartjack2’s snub it tumbles to 14th in the version 2 results. 8th to 16th were very tight but the top 7 are well clear (and their positions are almost the same in the two versions of the results).

Delighted that 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is still to come! I know Beatles classics extend past their singles, it's a ground-breaking piece of music, plus a lot of taste in this part of the forum is pretty left-field - but even so, I'm very surprised. Intrigued to see exactly where it will finish.

My first listen of The White Album melted my brain a bit with so many mixed feelings but 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' quickly stood out as a favourite, was great to see George continuing to provide quality moments. 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' was instantly shiny to me with its all-out psychedelia, from the marmalade skies to John's vocal processing - absolutely the kind of madness I can get on board with. On the other hand, I needed time to appreciate the genius of 'A Day In The Life', but eventually got there and now I adore it more than ever. It was really interesting to hear all the different takes of it on the Sgt. Pepper's re-release, including the final note. That creative process unfolding really helped me to appreciate just how right the final product feels.

'Help!' is a great pop song, not too surprised that it's done so well as it was a rare good result for the group when I sent them to an AF Idol spin-off on here laugh.gif

Help! is a great song of course and was on the fringes of them taking a more experimental approach to songwriting much like Ticket to Ride, just don't think it's quite as groundbreaking as the rest here.

Posted by: gooddelta 20th May 2024, 08:49 PM

For me it's one of those songs that is so good because it feels quite poppy, effortless, upbeat and catchy, but has a lot more depth when you peel back the layers.

Not ashamed at all that I gave Help! nothing - it’s a very slight song from their worst album.

Love ‘Help!’ Like many of their early pop moments it’s so brilantly produced and delivered and I think people take the early stuff for granted at how good it really was. It helped them go on and be able to deliver the later genius stuff post 1965!

Help! was The Beatles growing up and showing they werent just going to write love songs. I can't separate the widescreen travelogue exotic colour movie from my love of it, both when it came out and on John's death in 1980 when it was repeated on TV. John wore his heart on his sleeve, always.

In 1976 when the Beatles singles charted again, Help! was up there with the big ones - and along with Yesterday the only early one to chart (if we take 1965 as the cut-off for early). Love the Nana's version, not so keen on Tina Turner's - but it works in any take.

Apparently Lennon loved the Deep Purple version and wished The Beatles had played it slower.

This was the closing track on “Revolver” in 1966 . As well as using Indian instruments and an irregular drum beat, it has backwards guitar playing and uses sampling techniques based on pre-recorded segments. The idea that you would make a track only for a recording and not for performance was quite new at the time.

The initial critical reception was mixed - one NME journalist expressed confusion that we are being asked to relax and float downstream in the midst of seagulls and noises that sound like they’re from outer space. However it is now seen as a pioneering track not only of the psychedelic rock genre but of electronic music.

Didn’t this do well here? It’s the only track not on the original red and blue albums to even make the Top 20.

One of their best and most innovative tracks, it's stunning to me how it comes from 1965 (not the least with the number 1 it inspired over thirty years later!), it sounds so far beyond anything a modern mainstream dance producer can do today.

Always have a soft spot for The Damned, bless 'em, fun and they even manage to use a few of the original vocal notes here and there laugh.gif

One of my friends is a massive Deep Purple fan, has everything released and seen them more than once on every tour, so he will no doubt rate this version. I'd have preferred a more "Fireball"-styled frantic cover (like the Damned) but I think the Prog Rock slowed-down works too. Tina's version was slowed down as well, more gospel though.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 22nd May 2024, 08:53 AM

Tomorrow Never Knows a major fave though a fellow Fabs fan not so keen because of the two-chord structure - but I really think that helps make it haunting and hypnotic. I first heard this on a radio series called The Rock N Roll Years which mixed news events of the year in question (one episode per year) with key tracks of that year. It started with the early 50's and just kept going episode by episode. 1966 was all about the build-up in the Viet-Nam War, still fresh in our minds really when this was broadcast in the late 70's/early 80's, and the episode ended with Tomorrow Never Knows - it really did seem to be a dividing line into a modern era of music and was hugely powerful in that context. I'd never heard it before that (it wasnt on the Red album)....

This was the last single while the band were together and the title track of the last studio album. It debuted at #2 in the UK but was held off by the rather eclectic “Wand’rin’ Star” by Lee Marvin, but did top the Billboard chart after achieving the highest ever debut there at #6.

It features backing vocals from Linda McCartney, the only time she contributed to a Beatles song, a guitar solo from George, and a backing orchestra which features quietly in the single mix. Clearly it isn’t the most inventive Beatles track musically but I still find the lyrics and the simplicity of it moving.

'Let It Be' an utterly great track. That intro and first verse get me in the feels.

love Let it Be, surprised it's out, thought it might be a contender for #1

Posted by: Severin 23rd May 2024, 09:24 AM

I wonder if it would have done better if we were rating the Naked version.

Both McCartney and Starr have stated it is the superior version, and whilst I've never adored the song I would probably have given more marks for it.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 23rd May 2024, 10:08 AM

The strings version was the version I first heard in Singapore and it was the cultural (UK) goodbye to the Fabs, love it, still takes me back to tropical happy memories, and has always moved me. It's basically a gospel song, witness the many covers in that groove. I've never much rated most other version though, oddly, especially the many charity re-births over the years and dodgily-sung elder McCartney live versions to end his gigs in recent times. Theyve tarnished it a bit, but I still want the original, and that means the single version.

Saw Paul do it in the 80's though, when he was still fab vocally and Linda was still there. And it still wasn't the showstopper track of the night......TBC

Let it be is just fantastic just a culturally important song. I actually used to think it was a cover of a classic ancient song it’s so legendary!

Another John song that was a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre here. Its promotional video was also a key early example of that medium. Like its double A twin “Penny Lane” written by Paul, it’s based on real childhood memories. Strawberry Field was a Salvation Army house and garden in Liverpool: the site is still there and was opened to the public in 2019.

Like “Tomorrow Never Knows” the track uses Indian instruments and experimental techniques such as backwards recording. It’s also the most celebrated use of a Mellotron keyboard. John considered it his best work with The Beatles. Apparently Brian Wilson, who had been struggling to complete the Beach Boys’ “Smile” album, said on hearing the track that they’d got there first with what he wanted to do.

This received Dot’s 50 points and was in the Top 10 of more than half the voters, with nobody giving it less than 12.

A non-psychedelic top 4 then x (Well, I guess you could count one). Love Strawberry Fields Forever, incredible production and works brilliantly as the moodier, darker cousin to its double A-side in reflection on John's hometown.

I really hope my 50 can win here, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's out next. Certainly can't begrudge the other three despite being a bit more overexposed.

Before The Beatles album sales were mostly Middle Of The Road crooners, Cliff & Elvis and soundtrack albums - they were hideously expensive relative to income (even new singles were pushing 10 shillings, the equivalent of 4 or 5 cinema tickets then, or something like 40 packets of crisps. I'm guessing maybe £20 in today's money, so EP's were a good inbetweener for thos that couldnt afford albums). But The Beatles albums sold in bucketloads, and some album tracks got radio and TV exposure - but it was a bit restricted to "suitable for families" on specific programmes until the pirate Radio ships took off and pop music at long last got dedicated all-day-long outlets for those that lived within broadcast range of the North Sea.

Radio 1 and Radio 2 tended to have playlists, again family-friendly, apart from the evenings on Radio 1 which was when the more avant-garde Beatles tracks might have got some airplay - but not during the daytime till the 70's album show rundown on mid-week lunchtimes, when a track off the number one would get played. There just weren't the outlets to hear them mostly, though, and all bar one pirate ship got closed down by the government from 1967 onwards.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 24th May 2024, 04:06 PM

It's a classic, by 1976 it was "officially" the A side for charting purposes on the re-pushed singles collection, and getting airplay on Radio 1, but it was still Penny Lane for me. I don't recall ever hearing the track in the 60's (and I'm pretty sure I would have remembered like I remember Magical Mystery Tour, Revolution and others) but it grew on me with the years, Classic.

I was well and truly obsessed with 'Tomorrow Never Knows' when I first came across it, I think some of the lyrics even made it to Facebook as a profile picture caption laugh.gif it immediately blew my mind - so creative and ahead of its time, can't imagine what a first listen in the 60s must have felt like. 7th is a really strong result for it!

Happy to see a psychedelic start to the top 5 with 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Love how John took the innocence of childhood memories and turned them into something that sounds very dark and haunting, yet still totally accessible. So original and brilliant. Although the "cranberry sauce" outro did freak me out a bit when I was younger laugh.gif

This is George’s best performing song here and his most famous, written in 1969 and appearing on “Abbey Road”. It reflects joy and relief on the arrival of spring, which at the time might have brought him some respite from the troubles in the band. The track is unusual for having several time signature changes, and was an early user of a Moog synthesiser.

In 2010 it was the 3rd highest chart entry when the group’s catalogue became available to download, behind “Hey Jude” and “Let It Be”. It is the group’s most streamed track on Spotify, currently with nearly 1.3 billion plays.

This received Top 10 scores from a whopping 12 voters and a maximum from Jade. chartjack2’s votes would have pushed it into bronze position.

This was included on the “Help!” album in 1965, but in the US it was released as a single and reached #1. In the UK there was later a “Yesterday” EP released in the UK with 3 other tracks which topped the EP chart. A later single release in 1976 reached #8.

Paul is the only band member on this track. He has said that the tune to “Yesterday” came to him in a dream, and he rushed to the piano upon waking to avoid forgetting it. Initially the words were “Scrambled eggs: oh my baby how I love your legs” until more suitable words were written. It is one of the most covered songs of all time, with over 2,200 known versions.

Here it gained points from all voters, including 10 top 10s and 2 maximums.

Judging by the votes I'm clearly alone in this

One cute little stat:

The first vote way back on 31 December from popchartfreak gave 50 to “Eleanor Rigby” and 49 to “Hey Jude”.

The last vote before the deadline in April from Brer gave 50 to “Hey Jude” and 49 to “Eleanor Rigby”.

'Yesterday' is one I don't think I'd have called being top 3 when this started, but aside from the whole legend of it coming to him in a dream, "scrambled eggs..." and becoming the most covered song, the strings only accompaniment and the simple clarity of the music and lyrics elevates it.

Posted by: Bjork 27th May 2024, 08:33 AM

oh what a disappointment, really thought Yesterday would be #1, much much better than the 2 left imo

Posted by: Popchartfreak 27th May 2024, 08:36 AM

it's a simple tune, and it was a hit at the time for Matt Monroe I think - which i never remember as being a hit. The Beatles were Yesterday, but more memorable was Marianne faithful's cover on a Beatles TV Special, which I vaguely remember watching at the time, and very much remember on it's 80's repeat. Great show, The Music Of Lennon & McCartney came out just before Christmas '65.

Amongst the gems:

Peter & Gordon, A World Without Love
Lulu, I Saw Him Standing There
Peter Sellers as Lawrence Olivier's Richard III: A Hard Day's Night
The Beatles, Day Tripper
Paul McCartney/Marianne Faithful, Yesterday
Billy J. Kramer, Bad To Me
Cilla Black, It's For You (a highlight of the show, outside Beatles performances)
Henry Mancini, If I Fell
Esther Phillips, And I Love Him
The Beatles, we Can Work It Out

This was written by Paul and evolved from “Hey Jules”, written to comfort Julian Lennon after his dad had left his wife Cynthia for Yoko Ono. It was recorded during the “White Album” sessions and was the first time they used eight track recording equipment. At over 7 minutes in length thanks to the 4 minute coda (about which much has been written by critics in an effort to make sense of it) it was the longest UK #1 single up to that point.

It was #1 in the US for 9 weeks, a joint record at the time, and in the UK is their only post 1964 pure million seller. Here it received 2 50s, 10 top 10 placings and a lowest score of 15, the highest lowest score achieved in the rate.

We finish with one of only a few Beatles songs whose primary authorship between John and Paul is disputed, though various witness sources seem to support Paul’s claim. It was included on “Revolver” and of course released as a double A side single with “Yellow Submarine” reaching #1 in the UK.

Musically it perhaps seems less experimental now than it was at the time, when George Martin’s string quartet arrangement was very much breaking with convention. The lyrical theme of loneliness was also very unconventional. “Eleanor Rigby” may be the Beatles song whose lyrics have been most discussed by sociologists and philosophers over the years.

This gained 3 sets of maximum points, fewer and “A Day In The Life”, and unlike 2nd and 3rd did not receive a full house of voters. Nonetheless it wins convincingly thanks to consistently very high scores - 12 top 5s and 15 top 10s.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 28th May 2024, 08:43 AM

Thanks for running this Julian, great stuff and a perfect top 2 from my point of view laugh.gif

Hey Jude was the one that kicked-off my chart-obsession when it topped the chart and I discovered the Alan Freeman chart show rundown, I remember it on Top Of The Pops and it was only second in my affections at the time to Mary Hopkin's Those Were The Days (also Paul behind that one). It was an epic length for a pop single, unheard of at the time, that rousing singalong is timeless, and I recall singing along in the dining room of 3 Sheepwalk, RAF Swinderby, Lincolnshire every Sunday till it dropped out the top 20.

It was a hit again in 1976, the top original single of their catalogue, and again in 1988, and out again in 1998 as formats changed. I saw Paul do it at Wembley Arena, it was inspirational, and a woman in the back row in the block in front of us (we were on the flat, all stood up) passed out, which caused me concern and interrupted my feelings of elation. Oops.

But Eleanor Rigby is the most-emotionally-affecting song of their catalogue, loneliness is a devastating condition for some older people (not me!) and the imagery is very stark and moving. The strings were genius. Yellow Submarine's video for it is amazing too. Still makes me weep if I sing along to it. What a song!

Posted by: gooddelta 28th May 2024, 09:28 AM

I'm glad Eleanor Rigby won as it's among my top ten at least, a wonderful song. Hey Jude is a classic of course, but I wouldn't call it a personal favourite.

Good results overall, the download/streaming success era of Here Comes The Sun reflected here too, but it's a lovely song.

Thanks for running this Julian! Quite a rate, and really enjoyed your commentary.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 28th May 2024, 10:03 AM

Ooh wonderful, my favourite won heart.gif I thought that one snub might have cost it, one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking songs ever written and wonderfully composed, it really gets to me even today.

I do enjoy Hey Jude as well, it's a timeless song and very feel-good, it's just become a bit cliched over the years and I do prefer their more introspective work.

Yesterday and Here Comes The Sun are both absolutely wonderful in their simplicity and encapsulating of two polar opposite moods, they work so well and not surprised their appeal has endured.

This was a great idea and I enjoyed following the results, thanks Julian!

Anyone for the Rolling Stones next?

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks to you and others for adding interesting commentaries.

I need a break from running these things but I would certainly participate in a Stones one with interest.

Posted by: Steve201 29th May 2024, 12:12 PM

Not sure I would know enough of the Stones stuff to be able to effectively participate but would be next on my list of artists albums I am going to listen to once o finish off the Let it be album of the e Beatles!

I’d be very happy to run a Stones rate if that’s OK. They’ve had 58 hits (include parts double and triple A sides), so I guess we go from there? Everyone ranks their top 25 from this little lot?

ABBA or Blondie for the next big rate !!!

Posted by: Jade 29th May 2024, 08:08 PM

I'm largely a psychedelic Beatles fan but have such a soft spot for 'Here Comes The Sun', it soothes me like no other song can. So, however basic a choice of +50 on paper due to its enormous popularity nowadays, it wouldn't have felt right to give top marks to anything else as that personal connection feels incredibly special to me. 'Yesterday' has really blossomed for me over time as well, lovely songwriting there from Paul (...as stunning as those original lyrics are kink.gif) and the strings in the production really hook me in too.

Speaking of standout strings...'Eleanor Rigby' is an amazing winner wub.gif one of two Revolver tracks in my top 5 - my favourite album of theirs, just like Jim. Love the immediacy of the intro and the whole product is totally heart-breaking. 'Hey Jude' is a worthy runner-up as well. It does feel like one of their most overplayed but I've somehow never got bored of it.

Thanks very much for running this, Julian *.* has been fun to appreciate my favourite band with many others who also feel passionate about them on the forum x

very pleased to see Eleanor Rigby #1 here and Here Comes The Sun at #3. not so fond of Hey Jude but there we go. thanks for running this so well.

the Rolling Stones rates ought to have their most popular album tracks too (Beast of Burden, Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses, You Can't Always Get What You Want, She's a Rainbow to name some that are more popular than at least half of that list)

Posted by: Last Dreamer 29th May 2024, 08:40 PM

I wish to have something like Ultimate chart, which UKMix forum had in the past for the acts with a big discographies.

They compiled 12 Ultimate charts for Beatles, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Mariah, Janet, Madonna, Kylie, Queen, Bowie, Whitney, Prince, Kate Bush
Elvis was missed, because his discography is huge, Blondie and some British groups from 90s didn't get enough supporting in polls.

QUOTE
Your list has to have a minimum of 20 songs on it and a maximum of 50 songs.

With this voting rule they got a nice balance between casual listeners, who mostly voted for main hits and hardcore fans had a chance to vote for low-known songs / personal favourites too.

For sample two results threads for
Beatles : http://www.ukmix.org/forum/music-discussion/music-games-survivors/survivors-games-archive/65241-the-ultimate-chart-the-beatles
ABBA : http://www.ukmix.org/forum/music-discussion/music-games-survivors/survivors-games-archive/80750-ultimate-abba-chart

Definitely this

Posted by: JulianT 30th May 2024, 08:06 AM

A poll could be worth doing. There was a 2021 ABBA rate so maybe too soon to do another. I’d be really interested in the Stones myself but I’m guessing Blondie would get more participants, as most Buzzjackers are millennials who tend to be not that interested in stuff from before they were born.

As for selection criteria, it’s good to make it objective but at the same time you want to make sure the artist’s work is very well represented. One possibility which I considered for The Beatles is singles plus the X most streamed non singles on Spotify.

For ABBA we can do a little more deeper ranking and add (at least) More ABBA Gold compilation. After 78 songs in Beatles ranking, 50 or more songs for ABBA is OK thing.

For Blondie rate you must add X-Offender, In The Flash, Rip Her To Shreds, One Way Or Another .... maybe also "I'm Gonna Love You Too" and "11.59".

Posted by: dandy* 30th May 2024, 08:54 AM

What about Fleetwood Mac?

Btw I’d probably vote for the Stones out of those already mentioned. ABBA would be fine but I do think we’ve already done things that are ABBA based.

I’d participate in a Blondie one also though

Posted by: Last Dreamer 30th May 2024, 09:10 AM

I will join to Fleetwood Mac rate/ranking, if will like the rules/songs selection.

Posted by: Severin 30th May 2024, 09:54 AM

Obviously, I am up for the Rolling Stones one and I would do a Blondie one. Not sure how Fleetwood Mac would pan out, beyond the obvious (Self titled, Rumours, Mirage, Tusk, Tango), I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the older Peter Green period but I'd be up for it.

Can't say I'd be that excited about doing an Abba one, as brilliant as they were, certain acts (like Abba, Queen, Elton John, George Michael, Jacko) have these kind of lists all the time and everybody already knows all the songs pretty much. Things like The Nations Favourite Abba Song have been TV shows before, whereas other brilliant acts like the Rolling Stones, Prince, even U2 never seem to get quite the same amount of attention, yet have brilliant catalogues of songs and deserve to be recognised more.

How about we limit it to hit songs (top 75) but each voter gets to nominate one wild card song before the start of the rate that wasn’t a hit?

I’ll set up a poll at the weekend but at the moment it’s looking the options are

ABBA
Blondie
Fleetwood Mac
Prince
The Rolling Stones
U2

And can I throw in the Pet Shop Boys as a suggestion? smile.gif

Posted by: Last Dreamer 30th May 2024, 12:58 PM

You can add Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry singles from UK Top 75 in rate.

I sort of followed this. I'm glad Eleanor Rigby won and A Day In The Life came top 10, they'd be in my top 3. I did attempt to start voting, I just don't care for anywhere near enough of their songs to have ranked 50 of them.

I actually think a U2 one would be good!

Posted by: dandy* 31st May 2024, 08:30 PM

Yes I'd be happy with a U2 one actually. If it had been a rate there's certainly ample opportunity to use the full spectrum of scores kink.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat 31st May 2024, 08:38 PM

I'd be very interested in a U2 one, there's perhaps a few eras I need to familiarise myself with but they are generally one of my favourite bands. Although any of the names suggested I would be interested as well. I think for ABBA, it should be only those not on Gold, we've had so many rates for them before and everyone knows what will do well.

Posted by: chartjack2 31st May 2024, 10:26 PM

OK unless there’s any objections, I’ll set up a new U2 rate thread on Monday. In the meantime, maybe have a think of what your wildcard nomination might be? smile.gif

Posted by: Roba. 1st June 2024, 01:23 AM

Yeah I'd be up for a U2 one tbh. Did run some of it in a rate in the 00's last year but tbh it wasn't the same without their 80's and 90's hits lol.

Also would have been down for Blondie or Pet Shop Boys.

Posted by: JulianT 1st June 2024, 10:49 AM

U2 is my least favourite of all the possibilities mentioned hehe but I’ll enjoy it whatever. smile.gif
