Welcome to the results show for the first Pre-2000s forum song contest. We ended up with a full house of votes. Which song has triumphed and who sent it? The results will start at 7.30pm.
Early thanks to our host for not only hosting but initiating this whole idea, it’s been great fun and it’s appealed to a wide range of people. I’ve enjoyed being a part of it and hope to do so for the next edition too!
Will be interesting to see what does well or not here. I'm predicting a PSB win just cause they are extremely popular as are Depeche Mode. That said wouldn't totally surprise me if something more obscure triumphs tbh.
No clue how mine will do but hopefully not too badly.
I think I'm predicting a PSB victory also. Paninaro is a good track and they typically have a wide following on here so even discounted votes may be enough to storm to victory... but we shall see!
I’m not feeling confident
I did not vote for PSB
1. Jade
Jade started off by sending the wonderful Waves by Blancmange but then changed her mind and entered this song from 1984. I'm glad she did as I don't think I've heard it before. Vicious Pink were a duo from Leeds (Josephine Warden and Brian Moss) who started out as backing singers for Soft Cell. Cccan't You See was their third single and biggest hit, reaching number 67.
Oh my I sussed out Jade’s love of all things French!
Great choice from Jade - still think the radio version may have been a better bet but I guess the extended version suits the theme of the contest more *.*
That's one of my finds from this contest,
2. Chez Wombat
It was Chez who entered this instrumental from the soundtrack to the 1982 science fiction film, Blade Runner. The soundtrack album wasn't released until 1994.
And there goes the most obvious sender of a song in the whole contest
After 2 votes:
1. 22 Charlie - Spacer Woman
2. 22 Hashim - Al-Naafyish (The Soul)
3. 15 A-Ha - Scoundrel Days
4. 9 Depeche Mode - Strangelove
5. 8 John Foxx - Underpass
6. 7 Alexander Robotnick featuring Martine Michellod - Problčmes d'Amour
7. 7 Camouflage - The Great Commandment
8. 6 A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran
9. 5 Naked Lunch - La Femme
10. 5 Vicious Pink - Cccan't You See (French Extended Mix).......Jade
11. 3 Soft Cell - Memorabilia
12. 3 Psyche - Misery
13. 2 Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Telegraph
14. 2 Book Of Love - Boy
There's a tie for first place after Jade and Chez both put Charlie and Hashim in their top 2. A-Ha are the only other act with a double figure score. 11 songs are still without a point.
I always assumed Bladerunner was a late 70s movie.
The radio edit would definitely have made sense but just went with my preferred version!
Not at all surprised to find out that Chez was behind that one
I at least tried to be subtle x
Can't not be sending the haunting soundtrack to one of my favourite films I was worried you may be pedantic with the 1994 release date but pleased that wasn't the case x
I'm hoping the winner isn't something too obvious (like PSBs), there were some really great under the radar discoveries here.
Oh yes I did initially go with Blancmange (and their ‘Rio’ with less of a budget video ) but then changed my mind to something that didn’t make the top 40 at all. Glad ‘Waves’ has its fans too
I couldn’t guess anyone! Clearly I don’t know you all that well
Nice pick there Jade. Obvious as can be with Chez on that one. Was also decent.
3. gooddelta
Papa Dance are a Polish group formed in 1983. At one point, they were so popular that 120,000 people attended one of their concerts in Moscow.
Oh wow thank you for 12 points, Rich!!
Good choices from both Jade and Chez, cool choppy vocals on the former, and I think the Blade Runner theme was new to me even if it is a rather obvious choice for this theme!
I was very intrigued to find out who sent Papa Dance as there didn't seem to be anyone obvious who would be sending a Polish song, interesting curveball from Rich.
Fully expecting a wooden spoon for myself here but we'll see I guess!
Out of the songs by well known artists the PSB one was actually my least favourite oops (though not bad) so I hope that doesn't win
4. HappiestSadGirl
Toni Basil's recording career goes way back to 1966 and her debut single 'Breakaway' with its B side, 'I'm 28', written by 10cc's Graham Gouldman. Over My Head was from her eponymous second album.
Yes, I sent Toni! I actually knew a cover version of this song by Patty Brard of Luv'- fame for a long time, but Toni's version is far superior! I hope most of you enjoyed it!

Charlie only receive 5 points from the next two voters but they keep their lead. With 20 points added to their total, Vicious Pink move up from 10th to 2nd place. After not appearing on the first scoreboard, C C Catch and the Pet Shop Boys both go straight into the top 5. We now have just two songs without any points.
That Toni Basil song was quite a sonic swerve (in a good way) considering I only know her from 'Mickey' haha.
The two 'Ccc' songs are throwing me off when scanning the votes thanks for the bronze medal, HappiestSadGirl *.*
5. Bumblebrë
Mamman Sani Abdoulaye is from Niger and has been described as a pioneer of early West African electronic music. Five Hundred Miles is from a 2015 album of unreleased music by him recorded from 1981 to 1984.
Thank you for the points, Bray! Unfortunately didn't have room for yours but I remember commenting that it was quite hypnotic on SyncTube
I already have 6 points more than I expected to be honest! Thanks Rich x
(I stand by my entry, I think it's a really lovely and charming piece of music, but I can totally see why it wouldn't be the most attention grabbing song in such a stacked lineup here. Maybe better suited to Worldvision, not that Niger would ever be an option there. Still thought it'd be an interesting one to share, coming courtesy of me typing the word 'synth' into /r/listentothis and checking out interesting looking songs tagged with 80s release dates, albeit in this case a song that wasn't actually technically released until 2015)
6. jimwatts
Forever Young was the third single released by the German group, becoming a top 10 hit in several European countries.
Sweet little track there Bre, reminds of a lullaby though the way it goes on lol.

We have a new leader as Vicious Pink move up from 2nd place. Charlie and Hashim receive enough points to stay in the top 3 while 16 points from the last two voters help A-Ha move up from 6th to 4th. There's also a big climb from 12th to 5th for John Foxx.
Thanks Jim for the silver medal, wow! This is an excellent start.
So the less said about my entry the better - I didn't know how obscure we were going, but once I saw the other entries I thought yeah, it's too obvious. I had 6 songs in reserve, including Underpass which is a stone cold classic and gets my top points, but there were another 3 which could have been used - maybe I'll save them for another contest if we're doing this again soon!
I've had Cccan't You See stuck in my head, inspired choice Jade! The Great Commandment was also a great discovery for me.
'Forever Young' is a fine song but I'm too used to the Jay-Z and Mr Hudson version that the original kind of sounds wrong oops!
Jade coming to win another song contest? Very much liking the look of the top end of the scoreboard so far but of course early on and one of the few voters so far was myself so will see if that holds up haha.
7. dandy*
John Foxx started out as the lead singer of Ultravox, who released three albums from 1977 to 1978, before he was replaced by Midge Ure. Underpass was his debut solo single, reaching number 31 in 1980. It's now considered to be one of the milestone synthpop singles. John has continued to release music sporadically, leaving him time to be an artist, photographer, graphic designer, writer, teacher and lecturer.
Fab choice Dandy there, was one I actually looked at initially.
Thank you for the bronze medal, Dandy
I really enjoyed your entry and had no idea that there was a pre-Midge Ure version of Ultravox until the SyncTube session!
8. King Rollo
As I pointed out in the Number 1 listening sessions, Thomas Dolby was first seen in the video for It's My Party by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, playing the role of Johnny. Windpower, which got to number 31 on the UK singles chart, is from his science themed debut album, 'The Golden Age Of Wireless', released in 1982. I think it's second only to 'A Secret Wish' by Propaganda as the best 80s synthpop album. Thomas is probably best known for his song 'She Blinded Me With Science' which was a top 5 single in the US. His scientific expertise led to him founding an audio technology company in the 90s. At one point, it was said that there was a 50% chance that the ringtone on your mobile phone was one of his. He is still married to the actress from Dynasty he met in the 80s.
I wondered why Underpass wasn't in that list of songs you knew Dandy, I thought at least some people must know it! Didn't stop it getting my top points of course
Edit: actually I see it was in your list, but don't think anyone else mentioned it.
Thank you, Rollo! I'm very happy to receive points from the host
Windpower was a fave of mine, surprised to see that on zero points still!

The top 2 are unchanged. With 12 points from Dandy, A-Ha move up to 3rd place. Moving into contention are Soft Cell (13th to 8th) and the Pet Shop Boys (9th to 6th). Thomas Dolby and Papa Dance are still waiting for their first points.
'Underpass' was a fantastic opening song to set the tone for the contest, did not know about the Ultravox connection until it was pointed out in the listenthrough, all new to me anyway. Great choice Dandy
What a top 5 right now! Aside from my own, obviously, I voted for everything in there and the current 2nd place was my 12 *.* excited to find out who that was.
9. Popchartfreak
Paninaro was the B side to the Pet Shop Boys' 1986 single 'Suburbia'. An extended mix was included on their 'Disco' album. In 1995, a remixed version was released as a single and got to number 15. Those of you who knew the song might have already guessed it was Popchartfreak's entry as he was a bit too specific with his clues in the confirmations thread.
I also had no idea that John Foxx used to be in Ultravox until Rollo mentioned it in the listen through chat. Very chuffed that people enjoyed Underpass anyway, I did initially enter a remix of it until Rollo pointed out that I was cheating a little bit, albeit it's not too different to the original.
Still, I do love the original anyway so either was fine by me
10. Ansel
Alexander Robotnick is an Italian musician whose real name is Maurizio Dami. Problčmes D'Amour reached a wider audience after being featured in the 1985 film National Lampoon's European Vacation.
ps also v v v happy that the top 3 after my votes were also the top 3 in my votes

Vicious Pink and Hashim receive no points from the last two voters so A-Ha are now the new leaders. The Pet Shop Boys continue to make steady progress, moving up from 6th to 4th. 20 points for A Flock Of Seagulls move them into 7th place while Alphaville have a good climb from 22nd to 14th. At last, my own song gets some points, leaving gooddelta's Nasz Disneyland as the only song still with nul points.
My 12 now in the lead we love to see it
Oh no at Papa Dance being the last on 0, I really did want to squeeze that into my votes aw!
Things aren't looking good for me then, almost out of the top 20 after a vaguely promising start thanks Chez for the points at least!
I'd be very happy with an A-Ha win but hopefully Camouflage can climb a bit.
11. Dobbo
Psyche are a Canadian band who are this year celebrating their 40th anniversary. Misery is taken from their fourth album 'The Influence'.
Papa Dance off of zero in style! *.*
...and I was so excited by that I didn't even see the 10 for Underpass - yesssss thanks dobbo!
We love to see it.
Thanks Dobbo for the mealworm - and 'Misery' was a great closing song too, this contest bookended by excellence *.*
12. awardinary
Wardy tried to enter Superman by Black Lace (vetoed because it was a top 10 single) before switching to Vicious Games by Yello. He than changed his mind and entered this song by the 17 year old New Yorker whose real name was Jerry Calliste Jr.
I should have expected PopChart to be behind PSB tbh haha and Dobbo picking a great closing song too!
Also pleased to see the Polish track off points now too.
I actually had a feeling that Hashim was Wardy's as I feel like I remember seeing you listening to it on my Spotify sidebar a couple of weeks ago (it is quite an eye catching title haha). Absolute banger anyway *.* great to see that one doing so well.
So it was Wardy behind my favourite entry of the contest! I'm a fan of 'Beat Dis' and was taken aback as soon as I made the sample connection, amazing choice *.*
Thanks for the points too after that mini drought <3
Ah I wondered if Wardy had sent that, only because he talked about whether the genre could be stretched or not... it was also my favourite discovery of the contest so thanks Wardy!

Thank you SO much Dobbo, was about to post that I was so sad/confused that Papa Dance was on zero still.
Loving seeing Jade doing so well with that track PSB I’d have expected to win overall but let’s see.
I think John would enter Pet Shop Boys in every contest going if he could
13. Roba!
Telegraph is one of the more commercial songs from OMD's fourth album, Dazzle Ships, which had more of an experimental sound compared to the hugely successful Architecture & Morality album that preceded it. The album was panned at the time but in recent years has enjoyed a reappraisal with many current musicians citing it as an influence. Telegraph was the second single released from the album, reaching number 42 on the UK chart.
Always have to love a bit of OMD
Ooh Roba taking me to double digit points Glad you enjoyed the lullaby enough to vote for it
Thank you for the bronze medal, Rob I'm a huge fan of 'Enola Gay' and 'Souvenir', plus pointed your OMD entry, I really need to check out more from them.
Actually Bré whilst we're on the subject of your entry... where on earth did you find it?
OMD's first song to miss the UK Top 40 at that! Seems 'Underpass' is having a night of 18's (including mine) and rightly so and Jade's too.
14. Jester
Scoundrel Days was the opening track from A-Ha's second album of the same name. It was not released as a single.
This disrespect to one of the greatest ever film soundtracks :'( Thanks to the few points that have come my way nonetheless x
That's a great top 3 though, and Hashim was also wonderful.
Edit: omg that's more like it!!! Thanks Matt x Great choice of entry <3
FABULOUS choice from Jester

With 13 points from the last two voters, Vicious Pink return to the top of the scoreboard. 12 points from Roba help John Foxx move into 2nd place while his 10 points for Depeche Mode move them up from 6th to 4th. Many of Jester's points go to songs in the lower half of the scoreboard with Secret Service more than doubling their points total.
Brilliant choice, Jester I'm a big fan of the 'Hunting High and Low' album but know shockingly little of their material beyond that, so thanks for the discovery - and the points!
Yes a great choice from Jester - obviously know and love a-ha's 2 big hits but I feel like I've been somewhat underwhelmed by other songs I've heard from them, not the case for this one at all though, was quite taken aback by the unexpected goth aesthetic but it works really well for them.
Still a fabulous top 5 so far!
15. Bjork
Strangelove is a 1987 single by Depeche Mode. It was remixed for the subsequent Music For The Masses album to fit in with the album's darker sound and it's that version that I prefer myself.
Didn't predict Bjork being the one to send Depeche Mode but another good one from them.
Thanks for the points so far btw top 15 ish is ok with me.
Thank you for the points Bjork, finally a second voter I haven't listened to as much of Depeche Mode's discography as I'd like but this one was definitely point-worthy for me.
Oh wow Bjork, so close to an exact point swap! Thank you for the silver medal *.* you can never go wrong with Depeche Mode
16. JulianT
Memorabilia was the B side of Soft Cell's debut single, 'A Man Could Get Lost'. This version is a remix which appeared on their 1982 mini album, 'Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing'.
Pandora's Box is massively underrated (as is the Procol Harum song of the same name)
Thank you, Julian! Excellent top 2 there - same songs as me but the other way round *.*

Vicious Pink extend their lead to 13 points with John Foxx still in second place. JulianT's 12 points for Charlie move them up from 5th to 3rd. With points from the last two voters, Alexander Robotnick more than doubles his points total.
Thanks Julian! seeing a few of my faves in these recent votes so hopefully Camouflage and Book Of Love are in for a climb.
Thanks for the points so far and the Scoundrel Days love. By far my fave a-ha song.
Really pleased it’s a discovery for some of you too!
Pleased to be mid table-ish! The Soft Cell song is not entirely a crowd pleaser and it’s dubious how much synth there is in it but it was interesting to learn about from my point of view.
17. AH Gold
From 1983, Spacer Woman was written and recorded by Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani who were both members of the Italian disco group Firefly. It was the only record they released under the name Charlie.
Ah so it was AH Gold behind my silver medal, what a fantastic entry and another almost exact point swap, thanks so much for the AH Gold medal <3
Ooh thanks for the points AH Gold and pleased to find out who sent my 12 pointer!
18. fiesta
I Ran was the third single released by the Liverpool group. While it missed the top 40 in the UK, it was a bigger hit overseas, reaching number 1 in Australia and number 9 in the US.
Another 12?! Wow, I'm elated by the amount of love this is getting thanks fiesta! and 'I Ran' is such a tune, was very familiar with it pre-contest but still gave it 6 points <3
Another couple of great choices from Julian and AH Gold! And 'I Ran' is a bit of a classic too of course.
edit: also forgot to comment on Bjork's, really liked that one too - second time this year that song contests on here are widening my knowledge of Depeche Mode's discography after Rollo sending the also great 'Never Let Me Down Again' as his BJSC anniversary entry!
Two maximums in a row for Vicious Pink, surely must be miles in front by now? Jade really is the queen of spin off style contests!

With two 12s from the last two voters, Vicious Pink surely have an unassailable lead now. John Foxx is still in 2nd place while 10 points from fiesta move Depeche Mode up from 5th to 3rd. 13 points for Soft Cell take them into the top 10.
I'm not sure I'd have called Vicious Pink as such a runaway winner but I'm here for it if it holds that, an inspired choice and a good song (and always happy to see Jade picking up wins in every contest going of course!)
Can I still drop into last for the Brade bookends?
While Vicious Pink would be a great winner why are we treating the other French entry so badly? :'(
19. Colm
Secret Service are a Swedish group formed in 1979. Flash In The Night was a top 20 hit in several countries. The group finished in 1987 but were revived in 2006.
Thank you Colm! Really chuffed to be over 100 points.
'Nasz Disneyland' and 'Five Hundred Miles' should be higher than where they are
20. Suedehead
After trying to enter Soft Cell, who were already taken, Suedehead chose a song by their Some Bizarre label mates, Naked Lunch. The group were formed in 1979 by Tony Mayo but this line-up only lasted until 1981. Tony has continued to use the Naked Lunch name, helped by various other musicians over the years.
The lack of success for the Bladerunner theme is frankly shocking. It's one of the greatest pieces of music ever. I had to drop it from my top points because I already knew it.
Thanks for the 8 Points Suede!
Oh great choice Suede - that was right up my street! Well, this whole spin-off was to be fair
and... thank you so much for 12 <3 <3
Ah sorry for derailing your plan Suedey!

Vicious Pink are out of sight now with a 42 point lead! There's still a close battle for 2nd place with Depeche Mode currently occupying that position. 19 points from the last two voters move Camouflage up from 8th to 4th.
Thanks Colm for another few points - can I push for 20
Wow, very deserved lead for Vicious Pink! Why did it flop so hard on release? Lack of promo/airplay?
Glad you liked Papa Dance Colm, thank you for the points!
21. Daan
It was dance mod Daan who entered this disco sounding song from the Italian trio, Luciano Ninzatti, Stefano Pulga and Matteo Bonsanto, known collectively as Kano. Can't Hold Back (Your Lovin') is from their second album, 'New York Cake'.
Thank you, Dan *.* did not have Kano down as you at all!
Ooh this is more like it, I could push for a mid-table now *.
22. RabbitFurCoat
Boy was the debut single by the American band who were formed in Philadelphia in 1983.
Gosh is there anything Jade can’t win.
Oh yay for Mamman managing to make someone's medal positions in the end, definitely wasn't expecting that! Thank you very much Dan <3 (I guess it would kind of make sense for you to be its biggest fan with it appealing to the minimal piano-y side of your taste)
Vicious Pink really just dominating this though, so many 12s!!
The battle of how many 12's John and Vicious Pink recieve continues

I can now declare Vicious Pink as the winners. Congratulations to Jade. The battle for 2nd place rages on. 12 points from Daan help John Foxx go back to that position while only one point separates the songs in 3rd, 4th and 5th.
Ty Dan for a few points there, hopefully that's enough to avoid the bottom of the table!
Oh wow this must surely be the most top scores I've ever received for a song contest entry?! Merci RabbitFurCoat
Very happy with that win for Vicious Pink… maybe the radio edit would have done worse after all! Or possibly just blitzed everything even more easily
Congrats Jade on already mathematically having the win then! I am quite pleased that this didn't just end up being a win for Pet Shop Boys / Depeche Mode, not that these were super well known songs by them of course but still imagine they will have enjoyed at least a little bit of familiarity bias.
Jade about to start her fifth row of widgets then! Congrats
Congrats Jade, such a fantastic track, and I'd never heard of the artist either, a really inspired choice.
23. Addy!
C. C. Catch is a Dutch-born German pop singer whose real name is Caroline Catherine Müller. Cause You Are Young was the second single from her debut album, Catch The Catch.
Oops no solidarity between the CCC entries
Congrats Jade on a quite spectacular win! Didn't see this landslide coming at all, but I'm really pleased an inspired song won and a great one at that. Rooting for Charlie or John Foxx to get 2nd!
Catchy song there Addy, just not enough for points but another jam.
24. Harve
Twist Of Fate was from the soundtrack to the 1983 film 'Two Of A Kind' which reunited Olivia with John Travolta. It was a top 5 single in the US.
Yes Congrats Jade on yet another spin off win. Gosh. A very deserving win and as mentioned by others very inspired winner too so that's also a big positive.
Another 12!! I really had no idea what I had in my hands thanks so much Harve 🥰
25. ClaudiaKinkleman
Camouflage are a German group formed in 1983 and still going today. The Great Commandment reached number 1 on the US Dance Chart in 1988.

25. 9 Thomas Dolby - Windpower.......King Rollo
Vicious Pink finish with a winning margin of 54 points. In second place are Depeche Mode with the same number of points as the number of shows that they performed on their Music For The Masses Tour which is why the live album from that tour is called 101. The Pet Shop Boys and John Foxx have to be separated by a tie-break for 3rd place while Camouflage fill the final top 5 position.
Ousted from the podium by the late votes booooo!
What a decisive win! I thought PSB would but happy my 12 pointer did. A nice mix of the well known artists with unfamiliar songs and inspired songs and artists in the top ten there.
I can't say I'm surprised with my result, it's quite something to miss the bottom five in the end after only scraping four votes together, I'm glad they were mostly high points so the people that enjoyed it really did <3
Many thanks for getting this underway quickly and hosting Rollo, I really did make more discoveries than I expected so participating in this was a very worthy exercise.
Thank you for the final boost of points, Callum <3 happy that I managed to sneak your song into my votes also!
I am absolutely over the moon by the performance of this entry! I did hope it would catch on, even in all of its 7 minute extended glory (I mean that could only ever be the way in a Rollo-hosted contest!), but never did I think it would be to this extent. All of the 12s have been quite the sight. I'm really having a banner year for side contests with wins in Worldvision VI, Pride III, Club Bizarre and now the inaugural edition of The Best Song Contest In The World.....Ever *.* thanks so much for all of the support for Vicious Pink, so thrilled to have unearthed that gem from the archives.
And oh yes, powers that be, please feel free to create a widget for this contest as an early Christmas present, if you would like
what a first edition, thank you Rollo for your top hosting skills and I was so pleased by the quality of the contest. Really good results too - Vicious Pink aside, my bronze medal Depeche Mode finished 2nd and my gold (Hashim) and silver (Charlie) both achieved top 10 positions too, yay!
Pleased to just about be on the left hand side in my first ever Buzzjack song contest! Many congratulations Jade - yours really stood out from the field and it was well deserved.
And thanks so much Rollo for organising - was absolutely brilliantly done!

15th is still not as bad as it could be. Shame 'Underpass' slipped to 4th after battling with Jade on 12's but you can't deny Depeche and PSB their popularity in these things.
I did predict 'Le Femme' to be last so that coming 2nd to last was almost spot on. Aw at the host coming last. Didn't mind the song at all personally. Thanks for hosting this Rollo and be interested to see another 80's one in the future
Well I'll definitely take 14th after flopping for so long! Thanks to all who voted for this iconic piece, FOR SHAME though for disrespecting one of the best...OK, OK I'll shut up now x
I enjoyed most of that top 10, the PSB/Depeche Mode ones just missed my votes and very pleased to see all of my top 3 make it in. Problemes D'Amour still robbed though x
Thanks for hosting Rollo, a great first edition of this, very much here for this becoming a regular/semi-regular thing
It was great to see that more than half of the entrants were following the results live. Thanks for all the comments. I really enjoyed hosting this.
What a great winning song by Vicious Pink.
A shame about poor Thomas Dolby. Other songs by him would have done a bit better maybe but Windpower is my favourite.
Congratulations Jade! Delighted to see Vicious Pink win and Camouflage make the top 5, by far my two favourite discoveries in this contest, with Depeche Mode, John Foxx and PSB (who just missed out on my vote) completing 2-4! I'm happy with top half for Alphaville, all things considered - hopefully at least more people will have heard their original now.
Thank you Rollo for hosting this contest and the mods for supporting it, I hope there will be another one soon!
5th seems to be my lucky placement for any song contest in which I do well! Thank you for your votes everyone, and thank you for the contest Rollo
Also congrats Jade fab song
very impressive lead for Jade, I don't imagine the English radio edit version would have done quite so well.
could've potentially scored a couple more points off me with a few more listens, as it did grow on listen #2 and again just now, but it clearly didn't need those.
Underpass was easily the best discovery of the lot here, so glad that did well too.
Five Hundred Miles is really lovely too, shame my 10 points ended up being over a third of its total.
Sad that Kano ended up bottom five too though I weren't expecting to end up in the top half anyway.
22nd out of 25 is not ideal but the quality was so ridiculously high that I can't really complain there! I've already said but this has been my favourite contest edition across the entire forum, perfect choice of theme and an incredible set of entries. Thank you to the few fans of Problčmes d'Amour, I think it's a great little Italo disco number and I'd definitely recommend trawling through the various different versions on Spotify (I've counted 11 or 12 different edits/mixes, oh the fun of retro songs).
Congrats Jade on the win, great to see a more obscure track take the top spot! Despite some of the big names here, I came into this knowing only two songs (I Ran and Forever Young), both of which I love and consider huge 80s classics so it's nice that some other songs have had their chance to shine. Thanks to Rollo for hosting such a great contest, looking forward to this contest becoming a tradition - I've already got a potential for next time
Casually beating 2nd place by more than 50%, wow, that has to be one of the most dominant winners in any contest on here!
The predictable Depeche Mode & Pet Shop Boys lining up just behind in the end then, I'm glad Depeche Mode did better out of the two at least! And lots more of my faves in the top 10 - John Foxx, Charlie, a-ha and Hashim
I did bump Book Of Love up to my 1 point partly as I felt it might be underrated and indeed seems to be the case, I really liked the use of the tubular bells in it, made it stand out a fair bit for me! Disappointing and a bit more surprising to see Psyche also so low though
3rd from last is 2 places higher than I expected so no complaints from me, I'm glad it stood out from the pack a bit for at least a small handful of people, especially Dan!
Thanks for running this Rollo (+ the retro mods), definitely down for these contests to continue as a new regular series if the quality of this one is anything to go by! Maybe next time I'll try harder to find something that might actually do well haha.
(also that suggested jukebox widget looks perfect!)
For anyone who liked Strangelove, this is the much better remixed album version which has a longer intro:
Wow 6th place!!! I’m surprised and delighted by this. More than makes up for the rather awful day I’ve had at work, and my recent BJSC DNQ of course
I didn’t think it was Jade behind my 12pointer and the rightful winner. What a discovery that was! I was instantly hooked. Thank you Jade for bringing that into my life! 😂
Thanks Rollo for the fab hosting and instigating this contest. I’m already looking forward to the next one ❤️
Congrats Jade, I liked your entry and it was one of the two songs I had to cut it off for the points but glad to see that they were not needed in the end lol.
Happy with that Top 10 position for C C Catch.
Great hosting Rollo and looking forward to second edition (hopefully this will be done 4 contests a year like Club Bizarre).
oh missed the reveal show, but glad to finish 2nd with DM! My original choice was New Order-bizarre love triangle but that was vetoed, then Never Let me Down again, which was vetoed too, so finally settled with Strangelove, which I think it's a bit of a lot jewel in DM's discography.
congrats Jade, your song was an instant fav and in my top 2 by miles together with Camouflage.
funnily Scoundrel Days was one of the first (or maybe even the first) albums I bought was a kid, but I didn't recall the title track for the heck of it
Well done, Jade.
I'm glad one of the more famous artists didn't run away with this.
Congrats Jade! Fab song.
Chuffed at A-ha coming 7th
The devil works hard but Joseph works harder... *.*
Many congrats Jade, another song contest chalked off!
So actually when I was searching for an entry for this I did come across both Underpass & Cccan't You See. I really liked the former but saw it was a top 40 hit and wanted to send something more obscure and as for the latter... I found it pretty boring tbh so to see this kind of landslide is somewhat bewildering!
Not me not only giving Nasz Disneyland it's first points but also the full amount. I swear this literally happened in another contest earlier this year too. This song was a clear favourite for me!
Can't be too unhappy with my song's performance as this is far far away from a genre I know much about! I did have another song I was considering which I may reserve for a future contest, I imagine it might have actually performed better than Misery in the end.
A big thanks to King Rollo for hosting this inaugural contest.
Sorry I missed the live results, I was at a pub quiz coming 3rd. Well that was an omen! What questions got us the bottle of wine? Name the 5 Original cast Star trek films after Motion Picture. Star Trek geek me...
Thanks Rollo for the fab hosting and organising, much appreciated, and Jade, wow! You really do have the knack for these contests! Amazing an unknown song did so well, well done and also everyone else who took a risk. When I saw the list of songs entered I almost vetoed my own as the cheapest entry so it was nice an unknown won.
This was such a fun round, thanks for hosting this, Rollo, and of course lots of congratulations to Jade for winning - what an iconic song! Let's do this again SOON!
I had hoped Toni would do a little better, but well, better luck next time... I have loads of 80's songs in my list of potentials from the Retro Song Contest at the PopJustice forum
Been a busy week so only just properly caught up with this. Incredible and fully deserving winner. Not often in song contests where a discovery is something I find better than my own entry, but this was definitely one of them.
Pleased Boy managed to rack up a decent number of votes, even if it didn't quite manage any big scores. Of Book of Love's four singles which are their most popular on Spotify, that is my favourite so wanted to enter that even if it might not have been the one to do best here
Any chance of doing Vol. 2 for this? Maybe early next year?
Im curious to know if this contest will be returning in the near future? Maybe after the current Club Bizarre contest finishes? Hopefully we can step into the 90’s era with the next theme.
Yes, it will be back in February. More details to follow soon.
Yay fab! Had to remind myself of the last winner… and with it being Jade… I guess we can expect something dark and mysterious from the last century! *.*
Can we have another 80s synth contest? I’ve been reminiscing on this contest and I think there’s so much untapped material that could constitute such a great second edition
