Jumped over drama and I landed on my feet

50. Mind Your Business (ft will.i.am) | 1.958 Highest Scores: 9.5/9: (TimConArtist, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: -1/0: (spiceboy, Antia Hanjaab, Jade, Jessie Where, GTH, blacksquare, Tafty, Chapman, Roba, Lukuzz)
49. Ooh La La | 4.217 Highest Scores: 8.5/8: (Slayer, TimConArtist, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: -1/0: (blacksquare, Mack)

46. Outrageous | 5.583 Highest Scores: 9: (Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: -1: (TimConArtist)

Kicking off this countdown at #50 is Britney's most recent(ish) offering Mind Your Business, released through Epic Records in July 2023 alongside American rapper/singer will.i.am, which makes this their 4th collaboration following "Big Fat Bass" (2011), "Scream & Shout" (2012), and "It Should Be Easy" (2013). The song was recorded many years ago and upon its release it received mostly negative reviews from critics and fans. Was there really any other contender for the bottom placement on here given its paltry average of 1.9 thanks to its multiple bad scores and all around awful reception. The song is BAD plain and simple, its dated, flat and just creates an unpleasant listening experience, this should have never seen the light of day and stayed locked away in the vaults and throw away the key.

#49 is Ooh La La, released in June 2013 for the soundtrack to the 'Smurfs 2' soundtrack. The song was intended to become Lola Blanc's debut single who was one of the song's many co-writers as it was a play on her name. However, upon the request of producer Dr. Luke, a deal was made in which Britney was allowed to record the track. He collaborated with additional writers to rewrite some lyrics into a more child-friendly nature. Upon release the song wasn't a big success by reaching a top 40 peak in Canada & hit minor peaks in Japan, USA, Italy, UK, France, & Germany. Not the worst thing Britney's ever recorded, but she deserves better than this awful sickly sweet boring soundtrack fodder to an awful kids movie.

#48 is the misguided Pretty Girls which features Australian rapper Iggy Azalea & was released as a standalone single in May 2015. The song was originally intended to be included on Iggy's then upcoming 2nd studio album, but was ultimately scrapped when she decided to go in another direction. Upon release it received mixed to positive reviews & became a moderate commercial success by hitting top 20 peaks in UK, Canada, Hungary, & South Korea as well as top 30 peaks in the USA, France, & Australia. In a Twitter Q&A with fans in the following month, Azalea expressed her desire to have done additional promotion and television performances to support the song commercially. Not only was this a jarring rehash of Iggy's own hit 'Fancy', but it also failed attempt at trying to keep Britney relevant in the digital age. It's easy to see why this didn't connect as its lacking that certain special something & the fact that Iggy was only a big name in 2014, & this came out in 2015, a year too late.

#47 is Matches, which features American boyband Backstreet Boys & featured on the deluxe reissue of Britney's 9th studio album Glory, where it was released in December 2020 as the 5th and final single overall. The song was originally intended for the group's 9th studio album DNA, but it was left off the final tracklisting and was later repurposed to be a collaboration with Britney. The track was produced by Michael Wise and Ian Kirkpatrick and co-written by Asia Whiteacre and Justin Tranter. A fun little throwback bop, but honestly expected something better considering its Britney Spears & Backstreet Boys collaborating together, its very short and feels very stitched together, you can see why this was left on the cutting room floor.

The final song of this batch at #46 is Outrageous, released in July 2004 as the 4th & final single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone & was written and produced by R. Kelly, with vocal production provided by Trixster and Penelope Magnet. The song was the record label's choice for first or second single, but Britney pushed for "Me Against the Music" and "Toxic" respectively, to be released instead. It was finally announced as a single after it was selected as the theme song for the 2004 film Catwoman. The music video ended up being scrapped as well as remainder of The Onyx Hotel Tour and the feature in the Catwoman soundtrack due to Britney's knee injury. Not as fondly remembered as the other fantastic singles from this era, probably due to it being seen as cursed due to Britney's knee injury which cancelled all future plans , namely the fan-favourite 'Breathe On Me' being lined up as a future single. Other than that though this song just isn't all that great and feels very dated and forgettable, despite some funky banging beats. It just wasn't a great single choice overall and there were far better tracks that could have taken it's place.

No real loses so far.

So happy to see From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart avoid the bottom 5.

Posted by: Jessie Where 28th February 2024, 12:04 PM

Deserved last place for 'Mind Your Business'! That makes even 'Vulgar' look like a masterpiece.

'Pretty Girls' whilst far from her best isn't that bad, she definitely has a few worse than it.

'Outrageous' is vile, and robbed 'Breathe On Me' of an opportunity to shine.

#45 is I Love Rock N' Roll, which was originally sung by Arrows in 1975 & then was made more famously by Joan Jett in 1982. Britney's version was released as the 4th European single from her 3rd studio album Britney in May 2002. The song was also used in her 2002 starring movie 'Crossroads' & has publicly stated that the original song is one of her favourites. She listened to the original Arrows Mickie Most-produced version just before she recorded the song, Britney mistakenly attributed the hit version of the song to Pat Benatar instead of Joan Jett. Upon release it performed moderately on the charts worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in Hungary, Germany, Ireland & Austria, as well as top 20 peaks in Australia, UK, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Finland, & Italy. While this cover version was a fun moment in the 'Crossroads' movie itself & that fun was carried over into the studio version as well, however, as a single it felt rather unnecessary, despite this Britney does a decent job with this version as her vocals are good & the production is okay, but other than that to this day it stands as one of Britney's least fondly remembered singles.

At #44 is the first tie-breaker with Someday (I Will Understand), released in August 2005 as the sole single from Britney's first extended play Britney & Kevin: Chaotic& was was written by Britney herself and produced by Guy Sigsworth. She wrote the song two weeks before knowing she was pregnant with her first child, Sean Preston Federline. Upon release it wasn't given a UK or USA release, instead it was given a limited worldwide release where it became quite successful by reaching top 10 peaks in Denmark, Sweden & Switzerland, as well as charting in several other Europeon countries. While it never became a career defining song for Britney, its still an interesting and personal offering from her back catalogue, with its stunning stripped back production and very sincere vocals. Not one of Britney's best by any means, but it does have a nice sentiment to it.

At #43 & scoring the same as the previous entry, but placed higher due to it having more high scores is another Britney tear-jerking ballad From The Bottom of My Broken Heart, released in December 1999 as the 5th and final single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time & was written and produced by Eric Foster White. Upon release this song was chosen as the final single for the American & Australian market, while 'Born To Make You Happy' was released as the album's final single in Europe. The track achieved moderate success by reaching a #14 peak in the USA, which was it's highest chart peak, then managed top 40 peaks in Australia, Canada & New Zealand. This is a nice slow toe tapping ballad with gentle guitar beats, nice breezy production, and Britney's engaging heartfelt performance is what really sells this track from becoming yet another forgettable 90's teen pop ballad. Yes this was a minor mishap on the record label's front by choosing this over the far superior 'Born To Make You Happy' for the American market, but at least it didn't do any damage to her career, as she would continue to soar after this for many, many years.

Heading into the 6 averages now with Tom's Diner in at #42. Originally sung by Suzanne Vega in 1987, record producer Giorgio Moroder covered this track featuring vocals by Britney Spears for his 14th studio album Deja Vu & was released as the 4th and final single from that project in October 2015.Despite being a non-single track at that time, it became Moroder's best-selling digital song to date, debuting and peaking at number 38 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and number fourteen on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart, during the album's release. Moroder's stomping beats and dramatic strings really compliments Britney's vocals quite well & makes this one of her most intruiging recordings of her career. Maybe if this got more mainstream attention then it would have been more remembered and more popular.

Rounding off this bunch is the first of many Britney chart toppers to feature here with S&M (Remix). Released in January 2011 as a Rihanna solo track first as the 3rd single from her mammoth 5th studio album Loud & after it reached #2 on the US Billboard charts, a remix featuring Britney was released & with the combined sales of the solo version, it became Rihanna's 10th & Britney's 5th #1 hit on the chart. The song's new guest verses was written by Britney herself. The best version of this track is the Rihanna solo version. The remixed version featuring Britney herself felt very rushed with overly processed vocals that sounded jarringly out of place. At least there was that iconic performance at the Billboard Awards featuring both artists.

Those results are looking pretty on point so far. I'd say 'Someday (I Will Understand)' is the only one I'd go out of my way to listen to from the bottom 10, got a bit of a soft spot for it.

That ILRNR cover is inexcusable! A massive, massive low point in her discography.

I actually think the Giorgio/Britney version of 'Tom's Diner' is pretty good, although admittedly I haven't gone back to it much since it was out.

Don't personally mind 'Pretty Girls' that much. It isn't fab or anything but was alright.

'I Love Rock N Roll' cover is certainly not as good as the original but again one I enjoy at times.

Initially liked the 'S & M' remix until it just derailed off to be nothing special oops.

No major losses so far.

#40 is Perfume, released in November 2013 as the 2nd & final single from Britney's 8th studio album Britney Jean. Written by Britney, Sia and Christopher Braide, while the song was produced by will.i.am and co-produced by Keith Harris and Braide. The song built around themes of jealousy and suspicion in a relationship. Spears revealed that the song was about her split with her ex-fiancé, Jason Trawick, in early 2013. The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn & he revealed that there's an unreleased directors cut of the video, where Britney's role in the video is actually an assassin hired to kill her boyfriend. Upon release the song performed weakly on the charts worldwide by peaking at #76 on the US Billboard charts & peaked within the top 70 in Australia, Canada, & Ireland. The raw emotion and tenderness is on full display here, but you can't help but feel that the song feels a little off-brand and something doesn't quite hit in the way that it should. All things considered I do think that this was a very misguided single choice & perhaps should have stayed on the album, or at the very least been released later after the far superior 'Alien'.

#39 is Swimming In The Stars, released in December 2020 on the deluxe reissue edition of Britney's 9th studio album Glory as the album's 4th single to coincide with her 39th birthday. The song was conceived during the initial recording sessions for the album in 2015 by the producers Matthew Koma and Dan Book, with an additional writing provided by Alexei Misoul. The song along with the other new tracks came about following the #JusticeForGlory campaign that was launched by Britney's fans on social media during the Pandemic, then the singer unveiled a new cover art for the album on May 8, 2020, nearly four years after its release. Upon release the song didn't gain any substantial commercial success due to its lack of promotion and charted mainly on digital component charts in Canada, France, UK, and in the USA. I really wish that the new 'Glory' tracks gained proper promo with music videos to boot as this was a firm highlight with its sleek production, atmospheric synths , stunning vocals & gorgeous vocals, making this a somewhat lost gem in Britney's iconic discography.

Another 'Glory' tracks drops at #38 with Slumber Party, released in November 2016 as the album's 2nd single and features vocals from American singer Tinashe in its remixed version. It was written by Mattias Larsson, Robin Fredriksson, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, and produced by Mattman & Robin. The duo was also responsible for vocal production along with Mischke Butler. Britney's team commissioned several polls for different magazines to ask which song from the album should be the second single & this was eventually chosen. Upon release the song peaked at #86 on the US Billboard charts becoming Britney's 36th chart entry & Tinashe's 4th. Elsewhere it managed top 40 peaks in Hungary & Spain as well as minor peaks in Canada & France. This really deserved so much more than it got on its original release as this is a sexy, slow electro pop synth number with stellar production & a catchy chorus. Even the addition of Tinashe adds an extra layer of fun to this fun track. A firm underrate gem.

At #37 is Anticipating, released in June 2002 as the 4th single from her 3rd studio album Britney, exclusively to France where it achieved minor success by reaching a #38 peak there. The song was written by Britney alongside the song's producers Brian Kierulf and Josh Schwartz. A fun bubbly carefree bop the exudes pure joy with its shimmering disco beats, gliding strings and an addictive earworm chorus. In my opinion this would have made a better single than 'I Love Rock N' Roll'.

'Perfume' is brilliant and so underrated it's unreal sad.gif That would have been a smash for her if it was released a few years previously (see also: Madonna - Ghost Town)

'Anticipating' is also great but wasn't "anticipating" it to be that high due to being less known (see what I did there?). Definitely agree it would have made a much better final single (and several other album tracks too)

#36 is Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know, released in March 2001 as the 4th & final single from Britney's 2nd album Oops I Did It Again. After meeting with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange in Switzerland, Britney recorded several songs for the album, including this track, which she considered one of her faves on the album & additional lyrics were written by guitar player Keith Scott and country pop singer Shania Twain. Upon release the song attained moderate commercial success by topping the Romanian charts, top 10 peaks in Austria & Switzerland, as well as top 20 peaks in several countries including Germany, Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Finland, & Norway. The track wasn't given a commercial release in the USA, and was sent only to mainstream radio in April 2001, where it failed to appear on any major music chart there. This certainly does bring an entirely different energy to Britney's preceding hits & while it was nice her willing to break from the successful tried and tested formula with this beautiful yet yearning ballad that features Britney singing in a lower vocal register & really pulling it effectively. However, this does fall rather short when compared to her previous stuff and especially given the writing talent involved as it does have a slight feeling of not their A material. Nonetheless it does showcase Britney as a talented vocalist.

At #35 is Scream & Shout, by will.i.am featuring Britney Spears, released in November 2012 as the 2nd single from will.i.am's 4th studio album #willpower. The song was written by will.i.am, Jef Martens, Tulisa, Jean Baptiste and was produced by Martens under the alias Lazy Jay, with additional production by will.i.am. Upon release the track became a huge commercial success by topping the charts in 24 countries worldwide, including in the UK where it became Britney's 6th chart topper & first since 2004. Along with top 5 peaks in Australia, Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, South Korea, Sweden and in the USA. British singer Tulisa co-wrote the original version of the track then titled "I Don't Give a f***" & was intended for her debut album. However, producer Lazy Jay didn't want Tulisa to have the song and instead gave it to will.i.am, who re-wrote it with Britney in mind, despite Tulisa's vocals still being heard on the song, who in turn filed a lawsuit in 2012 and won it in 2018 entitling her to 10% of the song's royalties. In hind sight its hard to even say about this song given that those vocals aren't even Britney's, hell even at the time I felt that they didn't even sound like her & when did she become British all of sudden, well that was all down to the sad story behind Tulisa's involvement, which goes to show how cutthroat the industry can be. As for the song itself well its nothing special a serviceable club jam for its time, but has now aged like milk & just feels rather forgotten.

At #34 is Radar, which originally featured on Britney's 5th studio album Blackout & was originally planned to be released as a single from that album, but the release was cancelled and was later included as a bonus track for her 6th studio album Circus where it finally got released in June 2009 as the 4th and final single. Written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant and the Clutch, with additional writing from Henrik Jonback; with recording sessions taking place the day after Britney filed for divorce from Kevin Federline. Upon release the track performed quite poorly on the charts worldwide with top 40 peaks in Ireland & New Zealand, but missing the top 40 in most countries including the UK where it peaked at a mere #46, her first ever release not to crack the top 20. I do think that this would have served quite well as 'Blackout' single, but as a 'Circus' single it didn't really work given that it didn't fit into that era at all and being tacked onto the end didn't help matters, making this an obvious contract obligation release. As for the song itself it's not half bad with its cool synths, high octane beats and bouncy electro grooves, which makes a simple yet fun little number that couldn't quite overcome its botched release and flop status.

Posted by: spiceboy 2nd March 2024, 01:32 PM

Wow I never knew that about Tulisa and Scream & Shout! I bet she was PISSED when she heard it and also saw it become a huge hit all over the world, while her own career flopped big time!

God I hate how Britney became a puppet for the record label and her dad after My Prerogative. They picked her up, plopped her in the studio, ad infinitum, and forced her to sing whatever song they had been given. This is just more proof of that

Let's turn this dance floor into our own little nasty world

33. Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) | 6.869 Highest Scores: 11: (Slayer), 10: (Nick F1, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 4: (Pandamic Tension, Roba)
32. Boys (ft Pharrell Williams) | 6.895 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, ready for it, Nick Jonas, Mack), Lowest Scores: 2: (Scene)

#33 is Overprotected (Darkchild Remix), which was remixed by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins for the song's American release. The original version featured on Britney's 3rd studio album Britney & was released as 2nd international single in December 2001, while the remixed version was released in the USA in April 2002 as the album's 3rd single there. The idea for the tracks R&B makeover came from Jive records who were hoping to try and gain favour with the urban market following the decline in the album's first 2 singles. Upon release the song peaked at a mere #86 on the US Billboard top 100, which made this only other charting single from the album over there, but it did manage to fare much better in Canada where it reached a #22 peak. I love original album version of this track, but this version I've never really liked as it removes everything that gave its original form so much punch and swagger. Even the catchiness is completely gone in this horrible watered down R&B version & call me old fashioned but in my opinion they just ruined a perfectly good pop song, stick to the original and skip this horrible mess.

#32 is Boys, released in June 2002 as the 5th single from Britney's self-titled 3rd studio album Britney & was remixed for its single release under the title 'The Co-Ed Remix' and features guest vocals from Pharrell Williams. The new version also featured on the soundtrack to the 'Austin Powers: Goldmember' movie. Written and produced by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams (known collectively as The Neptunes). The song was originally recorded by Janet Jackson who ended up passing on it before it was given to Britney. Upon release the song performed quite well worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in Belgium, Ireland, and in the UK, as well as top 20 peaks in Australia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland & Denmark. However, in the USA it failed to make much impact by only appearing on the Bubbling Under Chart, where it peaked at #122. Now this remix version I do understand as it's original album version sounded like a lesser version of 'I'm A Slave 4 U' , but the 'Co-Ed' version has a more cooler and funkier edge to it, along with smoother production which helps give the minimalist R&B track a better flow. Even though the addition of Pharrell's vocals feel a little shoehorned in, that doesn't matter as its still a fun little number, even if it doesn't quite stand the test of time.

31. Mood Ring | 6.954 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Slayer, Nick F1, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 0: (Anita Hanjaab)
30. Do Somethin' | 6.958 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1), Lowest Scores: 2: (Scene)

#31 is Mood Ring, also known as Moon Ring (By Demand) is a song that originally appeared as a bonus track for the Japanese edition of Britney's 9th studio album Glory & was written by Dijon McFarlane, Nicholas Audino, Te Whiti Warbrick, Lewis Hughes, Jon Asher, and Melanie Fontana, along with production by DJ Mustard & Twice as Nice. The song was later included on the reissue of 'Glory' following a sudden resurgence in popularity of the album in 2020, nearly 4 years after the album's original release. It got released to radio in July 2020 as the album's 3rd single. Songwriters Jon Asher & Melanie Fontana composed the song on a piano under the name "Mood Swings", the duo rewrote it to an instrumental track that was later used for "Waterbed", which featured on The Chainsmokers EP "Bouquet" & was originally intended to be a potential collaboration between the artists, but the group turned it down, calling it too girly & eventually Britney recorded the track herself. This would have made a far better lead single than 'Make Me' (there I said it). This song is an absolute bop that somehow wasn't even included on the standard edition of 'Glory', but thankfully it did eventually get corrected. The hypnotic melodies & slinky beats creates a gorgeous soundscape over DJ Mustard's top notch production which makes this the SMASH hit that got away.

At the #30 spot is Do Somethin', released in February 2005 as the 2nd & final single from Britney's first greatest hits album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative & was written and produced by Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (known collectively as Bloodshy & Avant), with additional writing by Henrik Jonback and Angela Hunter. The song was never intended to be released as single; Britney, however wanted to shoot a music video for it & had to convince the record label. Upon release it became successful by reaching top 10 peaks in 14 countries including Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, & in the UK. Although it wasn't given a release in the USA it did manage to peak at #100 on the US Billboard charts due to digital downloads. The usage of a Louis Vuitton dashboard in the video resulted in a lawsuit against Jive Records in late 2007, which ended with Louis Vuitton winning €80,000 in damages. The video was also banned in all European TV channels. A rather fun chaotic number with its electro/pop rock sound that would you a slight idea of the direction she would take with her next album. The frantic beats, fuzzy basslines, chanted verses, & spiky vocal delivery, which not only movies away from Britney's usual style, but gives the song a more spontaneous and improvised tone, making this one of her most interesting and curious singles in her back catalogue.

29. "3" | 7.083 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: 2.5: (Scene)
28. I Wanna Go | 7.187 Highest Scores: 10: (Nick F1, TimConArtist, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: 1: (Scene)

At #29 and heading into the 7 averages now with "3", released in September 2009 as the only single from Britney's 2nd greatest hits album, The Singles Collection. Written and produced by Max Martin and Shellback, with additional writing from Tiffany Amber. Lyrically the song is about threesomes, while referencing American folk-singing trio Peter, Paul and Mary during the chorus as sexual slang. Upon release the song became a commercial success by topping the charts in Canada & USA, where it became her 3rd #1 hit there & broke many chart records by debuting at the top spot in its first week. Elsewhere it reached top 10 peaks in many countries worldwide including Australia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, & in the UK. Okay this is an odd way to celebrate a decade in the music industry with an ode to threesomes, but it did what it needed to do by sustaining her momentum and move forward into a new decade with Britney reteaming with Max Martin, which makes this a full circle moment. The song itself is a cute bop with spiky synth stabs, thumping beats, and punch production that keeps everything going at a fun pace. Although the one thing that bothers me about this is the heavily autotuned vocals which felt very much overused, nonetheless it is quite consistant with the electro sound, but I thought it could have done with less of it & used her real vocals a bit more. Not what I call a Britney classic by any means, a solid effort though and very of its time.

#28 is I Wanna Go, released in June 2011 as the 3rd single from Britney's 7th studio album Femme Fatale. Written and produced by Max Martin and Shellback, with additional writing by Savan Kotecha. The song was chosen as a single after a poll was launched on her official website 'Britney.com' in which fans could choose the next single of the album, with this gaining the highest amount of votes. Upon release it became successful in some countries by hitting top 10 peaks in Canada, France, Finland and in the USA, where it became her first album to spawn 3 top 10 hits. Elsewhere it managed top 20 peaks in Belgium, Norway & Denmark/ However in the UK it became her first single to not chart inside the top 100 peaking at #111. Actually quite shocked that this became the first 'FF' single to drop out, however, the scores did slow down considerably during the 2nd half of the rate which caused its average to slump to this position. This track is simply a fun banger with its hard synths, throbbing beats, fun whistled melodies and a catchy chorus. Sure the processed vocals were a little overdone, but surely this deserved a better UK chart peak than #111. A fun club anthem through and through.

27. I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman | 7.312 Highest Scores: 10: (Anita Hanjaab), Lowest Scores: 4: (Pandamic Tension, Scene)
26. Criminal | 7.326 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist), Lowest Scores: 4.5/4: (blacksquare, Mack)

At #27 is Britney's coming of age ballad I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman, released in January 2002 as the 2nd single US & 3rd International single from Britney's third studio album Britney. Written and produced by Max Martin and Rami, with additional writing from Dido. Lyrically the song speaks about the angst and heartache of adolescence. Britney considered the song inspirational and one of her favourite songs to perform. Despite gaining positive reviews from critics it however, won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Original Song due to the film that it was paired up with 'Crossroads'. Upon release it performed well worldwide with top 10 peaks in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Austria, & in the UK where it reached a #2 peak becoming the album's highest charting single there. In the USA it failed to chart on the Hot 100 by peaking at #102 on the Bubbling Under chart. This track forms an important part of Britney's narrative as she exits her teen years & matures into a young woman and what better way to showcase that than with this rather striking and soaring ballad that stands to this day as one of her finest ballads to date. The rousing piano melodies, gorgeous vocals, & a stunning yet very well executed chorus. A firm standout on Britney's self-titled 3rd album that had to be a single & thankfully it was, to this day I still love this track.

Another mid-tempo ballad drops now at #26 with Criminal, released in September 2011 as the 4th and final single from Britney's 7th studio album Femme Fatale. Written and produced by Max Martin and Shellback, with additional writing by Tiffany Amber. Britney loved the song when she first heard it and felt it was different and unlike anything she had heard before. The song was chosen as a single by a poll on her Facebook page along with other choices being 'Inside Out' & '(Drop Dead) Beautiful'. Her reason for this was to give back to her fans. The accompanying music video caused controversy in the UK where it was criticized for promoting gun violence. Upon release the song received critical acclaim, but was a moderate success due to very minimal promotion, with no live performances on TV or even on her 'Femme Fatale Tour', to date the song has never been performed live. Worldwide it managed top 20 peaks in Canada & France, as well as top 40 peaks in Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium & Denmark. In the USA it managed to reach a #55 peak on the Top 100, becoming the album's lowest charting single. In 2020 a revival in interest for the song occurred when it went viral on TikTok, particularly with the "Mugshot Challenge". A more mature offering when compared to the other 'FF' singles considering its the only mid-tempo ballad on the album, making it one of her more expiermential releases to date with its folksy styled production, flute melodies & guitar driven beats that certainly makes this one of her most adventurous offerings to date, but the heavy use of autotune monotones the vocals to a point where it sounds like she's devoid of any emotion. This was a very bold single choice & glad Britney took a risk even if it didn't really pay off as well as it should have.

25. Make Me (ft G-Eazy) | 7.416 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, Tafty), Lowest Scores: 4.5/4: (One For Sorrow, pippa, Scene)

We say goodbye to our first album era at #25 with Make Me, released in July 2016 as the lead single from Britney's 9th studio album Glory & features American rapper G-Eazy on backing vocals. Written by Britney, Matthew Burns, Joe Janiak and Gerald Gillum, while produced by Burns, with Mischke Butler serving as a vocal producer. The track's original title was "Make Me (Oooh)" & was due to be released in May 2016 with a scheduled performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, However, due to production difficulties, the track was reported to be delayed until the summer, with no release date being provided. The reason for the delay was due to Britney experimenting with different sounds on the track & the inclusion of the G-Eazy feature. Upon release it received generally positive critical reviews & peaked at #17 on the US Billboard charts, becoming her 20th top 20 hit & 34th chart entry. Elsewhere it saw moderate success by reaching top 20 peaks in France & Canada, & a top 40 peak in Australia. In the UK it became her lowest charting lead single by peaking at a mere #42. The first version of the song's music video was directed by David LaChapelle was shelved, due to claims that it simply didn't work. Instead a video directed by Randee St. Nicholas was released instead to an overwhelming negative response, a petition demanding RCA to release the original music video was created, and eventually it leaked in 2019 & since then LaChapelle has distanced himself from the project, claiming that it's not his video.

The smoothest and most restrained lead single Britney has ever released with its mix of slinky R&B and mid-tempo pop with a twist of hip-hop due to G-Eazy's verse and its a decent effort, if a little too radio friendly safe. Although, the sparse verses are quite catchy with simple guitar riffs and cool echoing synths that builds to an effective chorus, with Britney's vocals sounding sensual and soulful, probably the best vocals she's sounded in years. However, I'm sad to say that the song lacks that special something to make it pop and feels way too subdued to stand out amongst the group & wasn't sufficient enough to make Britney into a relevant pop star again, that awful music video didn't help (which probably really hurt her streaming numbers). This simply lacks the fire of her previous lead singles & as for G-Eazy's verse, I mean WTF was he doing there, he adds nothing to song. There were far better tracks on the album than this such as 'Do You Wanna Come Over', 'Man On The Moon' or even the bonus tracks 'Mood Ring' or 'Liar', anyone of those could have fared better than this. Overall it's not terrible by any means, its a decent Britney by numbers song that's perhaps way to subtle for it's own good.

'Make Me..' is okay I guess but not anything too special.

24. If U Seek Amy | 7.541 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist), Lowest Scores: 1: (Anita Hanjaab)

#24 is If U Seek Amy, released in March 2009 as the 3rd single from Britney's 6th studio album Circus & was written and produced by Swedish producer Max Martin, who also wrote previous hits for her first three albums. The song was chosen for release by a poll on Britney's official website, involving 10 other songs from the album, where it won by 26% of the total votes. It caused some controversy in various countries because it sounds like "F-U-C-K me", which led to the Parents Television Council (PTC) threatening to file indecency complaints against any radio station that played the song during daytime. An edited version of the song titled "If U See Amy" was released in some regions, including in stations owned by Clear Channel Radio and Austereo. Upon release it was successful by reaching top 20 peaks in several countries such as Australia, France, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Belgium, New Zealand, USA & in the UK.

This is classic Max Martin songwriting territory - a long term driving force behind Britney's career that has delivered many, many classic hits, including this infectious bop with stomping beats, bubbling synths, catchy hooks, & one hell of a earworm chorus. At first glance the song title is seemingly nonsensical, until you discover that its a brilliantly disguised double entendre with clever wordplay throughout the lyrics especially as the chorus amps up the raunchy factor & just creates a very tongue in cheek good time. The combination of Max Martin & Britney Spears always delivers pop perfection when they step into a studio together & while this may not be quite up there with some of their legendary greats, its still a fun ride & a firm standout on 'Circus'.

YES! It's such a vibe, it deserved to perform better but I think that was probably the ceiling of what you could expect for Britney at that time.

I do love 'If U Seek Amy' and of course the video is iconic, I'm still to this day unsure if I'd have chosen it as a single but I think I'm glad it is one. Still remember how Radio 1's version had "love me, hate me, say what you want about me" and left the rest of the chorus as an instrumental. laugh.gif

23. Hold It Against Me | 7.666 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, Tafty), Lowest Scores: 0: (Anita Hanjaab)

#23 is Hold It Against Me, released in January 2011 as the lead single from Britney's 7th studio album Femme Fatale. Written and produced by Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Billboard, with additional writing by Bonnie McKee. The song was originally offered to Katy Perry, but Luke and Martin felt that it did not suit her. The song was inspired by a moment when Bonnie McKee saw Katy Perry wearing a tight dress & after it was written Luke wanted it sound unlike his previous productions. Upon release it was a huge success by topping the charts in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, as well as on the US Billboard charts where it became her 4th #1 & made Britney the 2nd artist in Billboard's history to debut at the top more than once, behind Mariah Carey. Elsewhere it managed top 5 peaks in Australia, Ireland, Italy & Poland, as well as top 10 peaks in Spain, UK, Switzerland & Sweden. After the song was released, the Bellamy Brothers criticized it for being similar to their 1979 hit "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me". They were sued by Martin, Luke, McKee and Billboard for defamation and libel, but the case was dismissed after the Bellamy Brothers apologized.

From its thumping basslines, industrial EDM dance beats and pulsating synths certainly makes this one of Britney's most daring & adventurous moments in her career. But there's a somewhat lacking aspect to this club banging tune & that is its lack of that usual Britney personality, she does try to infuse the track with her husky vocal delivery & despite the soaring pop chorus & catchy melodies the song gets way too cluttered especially with its harsh dub-step breakdown full of scattered beats that somehow holds together, for lack of a better word she gets a little lost amongst the cluttered production. However, it's still a cracking tune if perhaps hasn't quite aged the best.

Written by Britney, will.i.am, Otto Knows, Sebastian Ingrosso, Anthony Preston and Ruth-Anne Cunningham. The song's production was handled by Ingrosso, Jettman and Adams, while vocal production was done by Adams and Preston. In preparation for the single and album, Britney began working with a vocal coach and choreography collaboratively. Upon release the song garnered critical acclaim, with praise drawn towards its production and female empowerment lyrics. Worldwide it became a success with top 10 peaks in 14 countries including Canada, France, Spain, Italy & UK. In the USA it debuted & peaked at #12 on the Top 100, making this her 31st chart entry. Planet Hollywood reported that the music video's total production and editing costs amounted to $6.5 million, which makes it the 2nd most expensive music video of all-time. Upon the reporting, director Ben Mor claimed that the costs were nowhere near that amount.

Quite shocked that this didn't rank in the top 20 here especially given the decent amount of high scores it got, however, there were quite a few lower & middling rates also which caused it drop considerably & if it wasn't for the 2 newer songs taking part, then this would have secured a top 20 ranking. This relentless EDM pop banger is probably Britney's last iconic hit to date, which is unfortunate & it doesn't help that her output since this hasn't been quite as consistant as it once was. This song makes a very bold statement that commands your attention in some of the best ways possible with its aggressive production, harsh synths & catchy hooks that helps makes this instantly memorable. Even Britney's almost spoken word vocal delivery makes for an interesting yet risky move & despite the song being very repetitive at times, it totally works. Shame that the rest of the album couldn't quite live up to this cracking club banging tune.

Work Bitch & HIAM are such incredible songs.

WB has become a 'classic' over time.

I can't believe Britney pays HIAM dust and hasn't performed it since 2011.

I also can't believe Britney went fishing on the release date of HIAM laugh.gif

Like I said, it's a horrendous song and she was forced to sing it. She has nothing to do with it.

There's things about me you just have to know

21. Sometimes | 7.687 Highest Scores: 10: (Herbs), Lowest Scores: 2: (Anita Hanjaab)

Just falling short of the top 20 at #21 is Sometimes, released in April 1999 as the 2nd single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written by Jörgen Elofsson and produced by Elofsson, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger. Jive Records and Britney Spears A&R Steve Lunt said when the song was pitched, the lyrics had much more adult lyrics. Lunt gave the note that the song would be recorded by a teenager and therefore lyrics needed to be changed. Upon release it achieved worldwide success by topping the charts in Belgium, Netherlands & New Zealand, while hitting top 5 peaks in Australia, UK, Finland, Sweden & Ireland. In the USA it peaked at #21 on the US Billboard charts, despite enjoying heavy airplay, it wasn't given a physical release in order to drive even more album sales. The song created controversy over the writing credits. Steve Wallace, an Indiana songwriter, claimed he wrote "Sometimes" in 1990, but did not copyright it until 2003, four years after Britney registered the song's copyright. There was a claim of an e-mail being sent from Britney herself backing up this claim, but it was considered fake and the lawsuit was dismissed in 2005.

While this was never really a contender for the top 20 on here, it did slowly gain momentum throughout the rate after originally starting at the lower end of the top 30, but thanks to the slew of 9 scores it managed to settle at it's USA peak of #21. Who doesn't love a good old fashioned 90's heartbreak ballad & talk about a shocking contrast to the teen pop vixen Britney showed with her debut single & then slowing things down with this romantic girl next door bubblegum pop ballad. The keyboard synth melodies & gentle guitar strums gives this track a lovely dreamlike quality to it as the simple yet effective production helps everything flow smoothly as heads towards a very satisfying key change where Britney really gets to stretch her impressive vocals and display some impressive ab-libs. I've always loved this song and it deserves a lot more attention, the perfect follow up to an iconic debut single.

Before the top 20 Britney countdown begins here's a reminder of what's left from each era:

Baby One More Time - 3/5
Oops I Did It Again - 3/4
Britney - 2/7
In The Zone - 3/4
Blackout - 3/3
Circus - 2/4
Femme Fatale - 1/4
Britney Jean - 0/2
Glory - 0/5

Greatest Hits - 1/3
Collaborations/Other - 2/9

As you can see both 'Britney Jean' & 'Glory' have lost all their singles & are therefore out of the running. 'Femme Fatale' has only 1 left despite having all 4 make the top 30, only 1 managed a top 20 placement here. 'Blackout' is the only album to still have all its singles in the top 20, making this the most popular era on Buzzjack. 'Baby One More Time', Oops I Did It Again' & 'In The Zone' each has 3 of their songs left. Then finally 'Britney' & 'Circus' each has 2 songs left in the running.

20. My Prerogative | 7.708 Highest Scores: 10: (spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, Scene), Lowest Scores: 1: (Pandamic Tension)

Kicking off the top 20 at #20 is Britney's cover of the Bobby Brown hit My Prerogative, released in September 2004 as the lead single from Britney's first greatest hits compilation, titled Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. Britney's cover version is musically different from its original version, with the bass and new jack swing sound replaced with a synthpop sound & synthesizers courtesy of Swedish production team Bloodshy & Avant, who also produced her single 'Toxic' from her 4th studio album 'In The Zone'. Despite the lyrics not deviating much from the original version, instead they are changed to fit a woman's perspective & could be interpreted as a statement on Britney's life and the media reaction to some of her decisions at the time, including her engagement to American dancer Kevin Federline. Upon release the song received mixed to unfavourable reviews from contemporary critics, but nonetheless became successful worldwide by topping the charts in Finland, Italy, Ireland & Norway, as well as hitting top 10 peaks in several countries such as Belgium, Germany, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia & Austria. However, in the USA it failed to chart on the Hot 100 peaking at a mere #101 on the bubbling under charts, making this her first and to date only lead single not to chart on the Top 100.

Now this is quite surprising, didn't think that this would have ended up in the top 20 (even if it's only just grazing it), but nonetheless its still ranked there. On the one hand it did make sense for Britney to release a greatest hits album at this point in her career, even if it was driven by a series of events such as her knee injury she sustained a few months prior which ended her tour and ended the 'In The Zone' album cycle despite having plenty of mileage in it & her whirlwind romance with Kevin Federline, which meant that she would be taking time off anyway so why not release a compilation celebrating her fantastic discography. Okay releasing a cover can be a total cop out move, thankfully this was a really good effort that felt very approropite for that moment. The harsh electro basslines, the bhangra tinged production & dramatic strings works wonders along with the beat snaps, crashing synths and breathy vocals helps Britney make this cover her own & its certainly one of the better cover versions from a decade that was literally full of them, especially in the UK where pretty much every pop act at the time released one every month.

19. My Only Wish (This Year) | 7.77 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, pippa, Nick Jonas, Tafty), Lowest Scores: 4/4.5: (Scene, Eduardo)

At #19 is Britney's X-Mas classic My Only Wish (This Year), written and produced by Brian Kierulf and Josh Schwartz. It was originally included on the Christmas compilation album Platinum Christmas from the year 2000. At the time the song received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics. However, close to a decade after its release, reviewers felt the song was considered a modern holiday classic. In November 2020 the song was released as a promo single on streaming platforms 20 years after the album's release and has managed to chart in several countries worldwide thanks to strong digital downloads. To date it has managed top 40 peaks Denmark, South Korea, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary & Netherlands. It has also charted in both the UK & USA where it has earned gold discs in both countries for sales of 400,000 (UK) & 500,000 (USA) respectively. Since its release & resurge in popularity the song has been covered by many artists including Meghan Trainor who covered it in 2020 for her X-Mas album 'A Very Trainor Christmas' (awful title). In 2021, the song was ranked as one of the 100 Best Christmas Songs of All Time, by Billboard. In 2023, Forbes listed it as one of the 15 Most Iconic Christmas Pop Songs.

Honestly I didn't know this existed until a couple of years ago when it was added to streaming, YES I know I'm a bad Britney fan for never hearing this. However, after hearing this fun little bouncy retro number I was quite pleasantly surprised with its joyful production, cute chorus & catchy melodies that despite being recorded more than 20 years ago, it has aged remarkably well and totally fits in with today's modern landscape. Normally I'm not one for X-Mas songs and while this is a solid effort, it ain't gonna change my mind anytime soon. On the whole its a pleasant enough bop.

18. Hold Me Closer (ft Elton John) | 7.812 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: 1: (One For Sorrow)

At #18 is Hold Me Closer, a collaboration between Elton John & Britney Spears, released in August 2022 as a single from the digital reissue of Elton John's collaborative album The Lockdown Sessions. The song combines elements of Elton's songs "Tiny Dancer", "The One", & "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" . This marked Britney's first new release in 6 years and her first release after the termination of her controversial conservatorship. Upon release it had a polarized critical reception, but nonetheless became a commercial success by topping the charts in 4 countries including Australia & Hungary, and reached top 10 peaks in 19 countries, including the UK & USA. In the UK it became her 24th top 10 hit & highest charting single in 10 years, while earning Elton John his 35th top 10 hit.

Throughout the rate this & 'MOW' constantly swapped places, this managed to edge out in front at the very last minute. While it was nice to see Britney getting a big hit again, however, I am surprised that this has managed to rank so high on here, especially given the many better and more iconic songs it has beaten. This is not a bad effort by any means with the idea of 2 legendary icons of music collaborating together is always a welcome surprise, even if this doesn't quite hit the mark the same way his previous hit 'Cold Heart' did. The song itself is a fun effort with its thick basslines gliding through the poppy production quite well and mash ups of his songs flows quite nicely. The vocals from both artists are way too autotuned and the layered textures feels a little off, but the piano, synths, melodies & guitars saves this from being a total loss. An decent effort overall even if doesn't take any real risks, at least it put Britney back in the charts again where she belongs.

17. Me Against The Music (ft Madonna) | 8.145 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, One For Sorrow), Lowest Scores: 4/4.5: (Jessie Where, pippa)

At #17 is the collaboration between Britney & Madonna - Me Against The Music, released in October 2003 as the lead single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written by Britney, Madonna, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Thabiso "Tab" Nikhereanye, Penelope Magnet, Terius Nash and Gary O'Brien, with production helmed by Penelope & Tricky known collectively as RedZone Entertainment. The producers came up with the song after bonding with Britney in New York & one of the other tracks they presented was titled 'Pop Culture Whore', which her management like, but Britney rejected. During rehearsals for the 2003 MTV Music Video Awards, Britney played a finished version of 'MATM' & asked her to collaborate & she accepted. Upon release the song received mixed reviews from critics, but nonetheless it became a commercial success by topping the charts in Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland & Spain, as well as hitting top 5 peaks in several other countries such as Canada, UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands & Sweden. In the USA it managed a #35 peak on the Top 100 Billboard charts, making this Britney's 10th chart entry & Madonna's 50th. It was also the first song in chart history to credit Madonna as a featured artist,

This was certainly a well timed duet as it came months after their high profile MTV Music Video Awards performance which caused a massive stir & grabbed many headlines across the globe. Having both legendary artists capitalize on that moment with a fun upbeat song was a smart move. I know this isn't considered one of Britney's better leading singles & the fact that it got overshadowed by the follow up 'Toxic', but I've always loved this defiant upbeat pop R&B number with its intense verses, frantic guitar riffs, throbbing beats & of course Britney's rapid fire vocals are slick and tight which really helps this catchy number pop. The addition of Madonna really elevates the production & just her presence alone makes everything worthwhile. Sure this song isn't nowhere near represents the best of each artist, but its an entertaining bop and does a decent job of setting Britney up for one of her most career defining and successful eras.

16. Till The World Ends | 8.145 Highest Scores: 11: (Chapman), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, Nick Jonas), Lowest Scores: 5/5.5: (blacksquare, Pandamic Tension, Scene)

At #16 is Till The World Ends, released in March 2011 as the 2nd single from Britney's 7th studio album Femme Fatale. Written by Kesha, Dr. Luke, Alexander Kronlund, and Max Martin, while the production was handled by Luke, Max Martin and Billboard. The song was treated with different remixes for its release, most notably the 'Femme Fatale Remix', featuring rapper Nicki Minaj and Kesha, which was released in April 2011. Upon release it received universal acclaim from critics with many deeming it far stronger than the album's lead single 'Hold It Against Me' & attained international success, hitting top 10 peaks in several countries including Australia, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden & Switzerland. In the USA it was also successful with the solo version reaching the top 10 , becoming her 11th top 10 hit there. The Femme Fatale remix propelled the single into the top 5 in both the USA & Canada. In the UK it underperformed on the charts by peaking at #21, making this her 2nd single to miss the top 20 & 2nd lowest charting single behind 'Radar' in 2009. The song appeared on several best songs of the year lists, such 'Rolling Stone', 'The Village Voice' & was voted by readers as the Best Song of the 2010s on 'Billboard'

The last of Britney's 2010's era to feature here as well being the final 'Femme Fatale' to drop out. This was easily the best thing to come from an otherwise generic era with this cracking piece of electro dance pop with its thumping bassline, swirling synths, sleek electronic dance grooves & a catchy chorus which thanks to the euphoric production makes everything sound gigantic & instantly commands your attention. This club ready banger is just pure joy through and through, and with it being the opening track to 'FF' sets the tone perfectly. This deserved to be so much bigger in the UK as it easily outshines everything else Britney did during the 2010's.

It's a shame they messed up its UK release by releasing it midweek and as a result it ending up peaking at #21, it was actually quite an enduring long-runner and almost returned to that position later on. I wonder how it would have done with a full proper first week? I'd guess probably top 15, maybe on the brink of top 10 which would have looked much better on paper.

Hold Me Closer within her Top 20? ohmy.gif Well, ok…!

Till the World Ends going no higher than #21 in the UK chart was a shame, it truly felt bigger than that peak suggests. Although #21 ended up looking gigantic when I Wanna Go made it to #111 and Criminal missed the Top 200 entirely. drama.gif

Interesting to see My Only Wish This Year so high. I’m fairly sure if it hadn’t become more exposed in the last few years that it wouldn’t be this high up. A great song though, always a go-to for me at Christmas time.

I do love Work Bitch for being the bop that it is… but there is an ick factor to it regarding it almost entirely being Myah Marie vocals. The audaciousness of her team and label to get away with that! It’s only really her fans online who are aware but it’s never made any noise beyond that. It’s actually kind of surprising that the lack of Britney vocals throughout Britney Jean never caused a wider controversy (whereas this did happen with some posthumous Michael Jackson songs, which became controversial for likely not having Michael’s vocals on them - to the extent that they were withdrawn from availability after a few years). I have to wonder whether Britney ever realised herself that it’s not her voice prominently on Work Bitch. Clearly it was a good mimic of Britney’s vocal quirks to be more than passable, but… why not just use Britney’s vocals? sad.gif Oddly there ended up being a version of Work Bitch that Britney performed to that actually is her own vocals. Anyway the reason I launched into this is that, on balance, I’m fine with how it’s done in these results - I’d rather see genuine Britney vocal songs ahead of it, regardless of the fact that it’s a banger.

15. Break The Ice | 8.375 Highest Scores: 11: (TimConArtist, GTH, blacksquare), 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, Nick Jonas, Tafty, Eduardo, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 1: (Jessie Where)

#15 is Break The Ice, released in March 2008 as the 3rd and final single from Britney's 5h studio album Blackout. The song was written by Nate "Danja" Hills, Jim Beanz, Keri Hilson and Marcella Araica, while production was handled by Danja and vocal production was handled by Beanz. "Radar" was originally planned to be the album's 3rd single, but this track was released instead after it was chosen by a poll on Britney's official website, where it received 39% of the total votes. The original concept for the music video was to have chair dancing sequence similar to the video for "Stronger". However, due to her personal life struggles at the time, this idea was cancelled and Spears came up with the idea for creating an animated video instead & was also meant to have a remix featuring Fabulous for its single release, but again that was scrapped. Upon release it received critical acclaim from music critics & became a moderate success commercially by reaching top 10 peaks in Canada, Ireland & Finland, then charting within the top 40 in several other countries such as Sweden, UK, Australia, New Zealand & Germany. In the USA it reached a moderate #43 peak, becoming her 17th chart entry there.

A little interesting fact for you guys, despite being the lowest ranking 'Blackout' single, it in fact gained the more 11's than the other 2 higher ranking singles. Trying to choose singles from an album packed with cutting edge gems must be a daunting task, so that's why the label left it up to the fans to choose one and they choose correctly with this instant standout moment which was an excellent choice with its atmospheric and well crafted electro grooves, icy synths, crunchy beats, & slick production, all of which makes this a brilliant track that deserved so much more success than it got. A very different yet adventurous offering from Britney despite coming from a very turbulent time in her personal life, showed that she wasn't afraid to take risks and deliver something incredible.

14. Circus | 8.458 Highest Scores: 10: (Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, ready for it, Nick Jonas, Eduardo, Roba), Lowest Scores: 6/6.5: (blacksquare, Scene)

At #14 is Circus, released in December 2008 as the 2nd single from Britney's 6th studio album of the same name. Written by Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly and Benny Blanco, and the the song is metaphor for the public's perception of Britney's life. After she listened to the track for the first time, she felt inspired to create an album and a tour with a circus theme. The lyrics talk about being an entertainer and putting on shows. Upon release it was well received by contemporary critics, and became a commercial success by reaching top 10 peaks in several countries such as Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, and in the USA, as well as top 20 peaks in Germany, Ireland, UK, Austria & Switzerland. Worldwide the song was one of the top 10 best selling songs of 2009 with 5.5 Million digital copies sold that year.

This is a really strong pop track which blends a few elements of R&B into a stomping electro pop track with harsh synth stabs during the verses before we head into the grinding basslines throughout the addictively catchy chorus. The production is stellar and that dance breakdown with thundering beats is simply fantastic and does a great job of keeping the momentum going throughout. Okay the lyrical theme of fame isn't new by any means, but this was very reflective tone of what the album had to offer and well it's just a killer tune all round and a perfect follow up to the smash hit lead single.

Britney was actually rehearsing chair choreo for this song but unfortunately she got hospitalised so the animated video came along.

I doubt it. By then she had lost her dancing ability.

Circus is great but for some reason the last chorus closing out the song, with the additional production, is so grating to me!

Because of fanboys like you, her dad and record company didn't let her even tske a break!! Soo yeah. Keep denying reality!! She'd be back by now, on yours and with big albums, if they'd let her have a break and not forced her to perform

13. Lucky | 8.5 Highest Scores: 11: (Eduardo), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, Herbs), Lowest Scores: 6/6.5: (Jade, ready for it, blacksquare)

At #13 is Lucky, released in July 2000 as the 2nd single from Britney's 2nd studio album Oops I Did It Again. Written by Max Martin & Rami Yacoub with additional ci-writing from Alexander Kronlund, & produced by Max & Rami. After meeting with producers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub in Sweden, the singer recorded numerous songs for the album, including "Lucky". The song's narrative follows the story of the eponymous famous actress, who, despite seemingly having it all – fame, wealth, beauty – is truly lonely and unhappy on the inside. Upon release it received critical acclaim & became a global success by topping the charts in Austria, Germany, Sweden & Switzerland, while reaching top 5 peaks in several other countries such as Canada, Ireland, Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand & in the UK, where it became her 6th top 5 hit in a row, and to date ranks as her 10th best selling single over there.

This was quite a bold single choice at the time - a mid-tempo ballad that explores the dark side of fame that would become more foreboding to Britney later on in her career. Honestly I don't think anyone at the time thought that this tragic tale would become true & was nothing more than the singer telling a story. In hind sight many of us thought that she'd release a uptempo bop for the album's 2nd single such as 'Stronger', but poor "Lucky's" story deserved to be heard & its an epic number that carries just as much meaning as it did back then. Although the uplifting production with its crashing drum sounds, brooding synth beats & light soaring melodies does undermine the sadness of the lyrics somewhat, but the track exudes so much brilliance thanks to its euphoric chorus, brilliant hooks & the excellent key change towards the latter half really elevates it a whole other level. So glad that this has done so well on here with a healthy average of 8.5 as in my opinion its one of Britney's finest recordings of her career.

12. Overprotected | 8.52 Highest Scores: 11: (Scene), 10: (Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, blacksquare, Tafty), Lowest Scores: 5.5: (pippa)

At #12 is the original & best version of Overprotected, released in December 2001 as the 2nd international single from her self-titled 3rd studio album Britney. The song was remixed by Darkchild for the American market where it was released as the album's 3rd single in April 2002. Written and produced by Max Martin & Rami, while Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins produced the R&B version. Lyrically the song is about girl who is tired of being overprotected and just wants to be herself. Upon release it received generally positive reviews & attained commercial success internationally by reaching top 5 peaks in Sweden, Romania, Italy & UK, as well as hitting top 10 & 20 peaks in several countries such as Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Spain, France & Australia. In 2003, the song received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The track also appeared in in the 2019 Max Martin jukebox musical "& Juliet". The song appears in Act 1, where it is performed by Francois and Juliet.

I think many at the time saw this as something of a step back when compared to the bold lead single, but if you actually pay attention to this song then you'll realize that its a true emancipation from her girl-next-door persona, with its aggressive delivery such as the pounding beats, electronic synths and her defiant vocal delivery. Okay there may be a few similarites between this & her earlier material, which can be a given since they were done by the same team, but here the production's far more punchier and the lyrics are more relevant to Britney herself & yet still retains that catchiness that we've become accustomed to when listening to a Britney single. This is a cracking tune that perfectly represented third album and its theme of stepping forward into adulthood. Of note this would be the last Max Martin penned track until they worked together on her 2009 hit "3".

Overprotected entered at #5 and then climbed to #4 a week later, which was fairly unusual for the time! Usually the first week was destined to be the peak.

She did come to the UK to promote, I'm not sure about the timings but maybe it had a positive effect on week 2.

I always put that down to it being an ultra-low sales period in January and things shuffling around a lot more easily.

There were also no new entries above #13 that week.

Posted by: -Jay- 20th March 2024, 04:06 PM

I had a look back, notably her interview with Frank Skinner aired on Saturday 26th January!

Maybe it somewhat helped Overprotected's second week - its sales decline was 35,500 to 31,000 (-12.68%), which wasn't too bad compared to some other new entries from her release week (A1, Ja Rule, Flip & Fill)! Although as you say, it was a very static week without major new entries, which was fortunate for Overprotected. A pity it couldn't get to #3 - only 1,200 behind A1!

Mind you, the 'Britney' album didn't get a particularly big boost from the interview... it climbed from #24 to #19 in the two weeks that Overprotected went from #5 to #4.

As a matter of interest, I'm a Slave 4 U went from #4 - 52,000, to #7 - 31,000 (-40.38%), while I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman went from #2 - 40,000, to #5 - 25,000 (-37.50%).

11. Piece of Me | 8.562 Highest Scores: 10: (Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, ready for it, Nick Jonas, Mack, Tafty, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jade)

Just outside the top at #11 is Piece of Me, released in November 2007 as the 2nd single from Britney's 5th studio album Blackout. Written and produced by Swedish producers Bloodshy & Avant and Klas Åhlund as a response to the media scrutiny and sensationalism of the singer's private life, which they had witnessed first hand after working with her over the years. The was actually the last song recorded for the album which was considered finished by this point. but the producers were persuaded by her A&R Teresa LaBarbera Whites to work on a new track. Winnberg commented that it had always been an unwritten rule not to write songs about Britney's personal life since the label rejected "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex", a response track to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River". However, the duo wrote "Piece of Me" & sent it do Britney, who loved it. Upon release it garnered widespread acclaim from the music critics & became a global success by topping the charts in Ireland & hitting top 10 peaks in several countries such as Australia, UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Finland & Sweden. In the USA it reached a #18 peak, becoming her 9th top 20 hit there. Rolling Stone ranked the song at number 15 on their list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.

Only missing the all important top 10 by a mere 1.5 & has scored consistantly well throughout the rate. This song makes a bold statement against the toxic tabloid's & even now after 17 years it remains just as bold and effective as it was back then. Despite all of her personal struggles she still manages to deliver the goods & this cracking tune is a testament to that with its defiant attitude, distorted dance beats, mid-tempo melodies & killer hooks each adds to its overall brilliance. Upon my first listen of the album I knew that this was gonna be a single & thankfully this masterpiece of 00's electro pop got its time to shine & became an instant classic overnight. The crowning glory of the "Blackout" era for sure.

Kicking off the top 10 in almighty style at the #10 spot is I'm A Slave 4 U, released in September 2001 as the lead single from her 3rd studio album Britney. Written and produced by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. The song marked a transition for Britney from the teen pop sounds of her previous singles & delves into a more urban & R&B influenced dance pop with the lyrical theme describing the plea of a young woman to be liberated and feel independent. The song's writers & producers Pharrell & Chad also collaborated with Britney on "Boys" another track from the album. Both songs were originally intended for Janet Jackson's album "All For You", she recorded one of the tracks in demo form before she passed on them both and was then handed to Britney. Upon release it garnered a mixed response from music critics, but achieved commercial success worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in almost every country it charted in such as Germany, Belgium, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Denmark & France. In the USA it managed to reach a #27 peak on the Hot 100, becoming her first lead single not to crack the top 10. The low sales points were mostly due to the song's 12-inch single release instead of a competitive regular CD single. Since it's release the song has become one of her signature hits, as well as having been considered one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, the new millennium, and of the pop genre. Her 2001 MTV Video Music Awards performance of the song is considered amongst the greatest live performances in pop music history.

This marked a true turning point in Britney's career as she leaves behind the bubblegum pop phase of her career & steps forward into a more mature chapter of her career. From the opening beats of this track, it became clear that everything was about to change as she ditches the winning formula of her past hits with this somewhat shocking yet brilliant track. The hypnotic grooves, thumping bass & bouncy beats really expands Britney's sound further and the percussive claps and breathy vocals sounds fantastic against the crisp production that has aged incredibly well & really shows her versality as a performer and even despite the shift in tone, it never sounds anything less than the legendary Britney herself. This may not have had the same commercial impact that her previous lead singles had, but it was no less significant as still to this day stands as one of Britney's most iconic and brilliant that stands the test of time.

They shoulda followed up with Crazy for another massive no.1, as Sometimes was dire. No one liked it, it's not musically, sonically or lyrically interesting, it's really boring, and coming in at #3 after one of the biggest pop songs of all time shows you it was a mistake. Crazy woulda been a no.1. Both were seen as maaassive underperformances, and were putting a limiter on her career!!! Fortunately she turned it arounf with BTMYH and Oops, getting concurrent no 1s after that.

Not everything in the world can get to #1, and just because something doesn't does not make it a "flop". I don't like 'Sometimes' either for what it's worth, but I can guarantee they were not viewed as being underperformances.

She ended 1999 with the biggest song of the year, two further top 5 hits and an album that had sold a truckload of copies. She was seen as being the premier pop girl and it set her up very nicely for what was to come next.

OMG how can anyone call a #3 & #5 peaks flops, I don't recall either being labelled flops or underperformers at the time as they both continued the momentum & massive success of her debut 'Baby One More Time'. "Sometimes" was a great 2nd single in my opinion & shows a different side to her by releasing a mid-tempo ballad. Anyway anything released after that record breaking smash hit would be compared unfavourably to it & this was a nice change of pace for Britney at the time.

"(You Drive Me) Crazy" - Another firm fave of mine, this was obviously held back for release due to it being remixed for its single release, which was a smart move as while the original album version was good, the 'Stop Remix' pops even more. It's #5 peak was FAR FAR from an underperformance & it was released during a very busy chart week with S Club 7 & Shania Twain ahead of it & its chart peak was a great result given the album had been out for several months by this point & had already sold by the bucketloads.

9. Womanizer | 8.708 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, JLJ, Nick Jonas, Mack, Chapman), Lowest Scores: 3: (Jessie Where)

At #9 is Womanizer, released in September 2008 as the lead single from Britney's 6th studio album Circus. Written and produced by The Outsyders, the song was re-recorded after a snippet was leaked onto the internet. The song was intended to Britney back at the top of the charts after a tumultuous year following her highly-publicized personal struggles in 2007. Britney wanted to move away from the darker & more urban themes of her previous album 'Blackout' & wanted her next project to be lighter. Upon release it received critical acclaim from music critics who deemed it a strong comeback single & became a major global success. In the USA it became her first #1 hit since 1999 & broke the record for the highest jump to number one at a time - 96-1, which was later broken by Kelly Clarkson in 2009. Elsewhere it managed to top the charts in several countries such as Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway & Sweden, as well as hitting top 5 peaks in almost every country it charted in and receiving several certifications from several countries. The song received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, becoming her second nomination in the category.

This is the highest ranking song not to get an 11 score, in fact none of the 'Circus' era singles manged any 11 scores which is surprising. While this did put Britney back at the top of the charts, but it came at a price, as from 2008-2021 anything she recorded and released during that time period became the product of a 13-year conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears, in which she had no control. Pushing all that drama aside this comeback single is a really good pop song and everything a Britney lead single should be in terms of setting the perfect tone for the album. From the opening intro of loud sirens and juddering drum kicks, it pushes Britney to the forefront with her quick fire delivery, making her sound active and engaged with razor sharp confidence. The throbbing synths that runs throughout the relentless dance beats sound refined providing the perfect backdrop for the girl power lyrics thanks to the slick and stylish production. This is a solid Britney track through and through and well deserved its top 10 placement on here.

I totally agree neither were flops by any stretch of the imagination however sadly tons of artists got labelled as flops for those peaks back then, This groove / Let your head go at #3 and Out of your mind at #2 for Victoria Beckham were seen as flops (ridiculous)

'I'm A Slave 4 U' is a great start to the top 10 wub.gif it's a shame that it didn't chart so well in the U.S. but I feel like its impact far outweighs that position.

I forget how much I enjoy 'Womanizer' until I revisit it! Love the video too. I'll always associate that song with the X Factor performance that the show was hyping up all night laugh.gif

8. Born To Make You Happy | 8.75 Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1, pippa, Pandamic Tension), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, ready for it, Mack), Lowest Scores: 5: (Jade)

At #8 is Born To Make You Happy, released in December 1999 as the 4th and final European single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written and produced by Swedish duo Kristian Lundin & Andreas Carlsson, and this was the first work by the duo & was mixed at Cheiron Studios by Max Martin. Britney's producers were unhappy with the sexual overtones of the song, and the song underwent at least one re-write before its release. Britney first recorded the vocals for the track in May 1998, which were later re-recorded in September 1999 for the ‘Bonus Remix’ of the song. The 'Bonus Remix' was recorded following the label's idea to remix the song to have more punch & to be more commercial. This idea came from the success of the remix release of "(You Drive Me) Crazy". Within 24 hours of hearing the new remix, Clive Calder decided to keep the original album version for the single release, and to have the "Bonus Remix" as the b-side to the single. Upon release it received mixed to positive reviews from music critics & became a massive success throughout Europe by topping the charts in UK & Ireland and reaching top 5 peaks in 15 other countries including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden & Switzerland. The song wasn't released as a single in the USA & Australia, instead "From The Bottom of My Broken Heart" was released as the final single in those countries.

Talk about ending a successful debut era with an almighty BANG (well in Europe at the very least). This song was an important bookend to the album's campaign in the UK as it became her 2nd #1 and reignited interest in the album itself, which went onto reach a new peak of #2 & eventually go onto sell over a Million copies. This cute mid-tempo ballad is laden with stunning synths, drum kicks & beautiful melodies gives it a more organic sound than the previous singles, along with Britney's sweet yet earnest vocals helps elevate it far beyond its teen pop foundations. Britney's fantastic vocals and charisma helps sell this song for everything that's its worth right before it heads into that massive key change & still to this day stands as one of her finest ever recordings.

7. (You Drive Me) Crazy | 9.02 Highest Scores: 11: (Herbs), 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Jessie Where, Nick F1, GTH, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 6: (JLJ)

Heading into the 9 averages now at #7 with (You Drive Me) Crazy, released in August 1999 as the 3rd single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written and produced by Max Martin, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger with additional writing by Jörgen Elofsson and remix by Martin and Rami Yacoub. It was also featured on the soundtrack to the 1999 teen romantic comedy "Drive Me Crazy". The song was remixed for its single release titled "The Stop Remix". Upon release it garnered positive reviews from music critics & became a commercial success worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in more than 17 countries such as Belgium, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, UK & in the USA. The music video features cameo appearances of actors Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier, who star in the movie "Drive Me Crazy", which is named for the song. As part of promotion for the song, Spears performed the song at the 1999 MTV Europe Music Awards and 1999 Billboard Music Awards.

This track & the #8 entry 'BTMYH' were constantly neck and neck throughout the competition, but about half way through this started getting much higher scores & beat that other track by 6.5 points. This song especially in its remixed form acts as a spiritual sequel to her debut hit 'Baby One More Time' with its immediately distinctive thumping intro, however, this isn't doesn't pale in comparison by any means, as its a fantastic song in its own right with its simple yet effective formula of bouncy beats, edgy synths, recurring cowbells & smart production that helps this soar above the usual teen pop fodder from this time period & thanks to Britney's strong vocals and charisma the song bursts with infectious energy at the right moments. This is become one of Britney's most prominent and celebrated gems from her early career that further cemented her ongoing chart dominance that would continue to flourish with each release.

6. Gimme More | 9.25 Highest Scores: 11: (Chapman, Lukuzz), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Jade, Jessie Where, Slayer, Nick F1, GTH, Nick Jonas, blacksquare, Tafty, Scene), Lowest Scores: 5: (Anita Hanjaab)

At #6 is Gimme More, released in August 2007 as the lead single from Britney's 5th studio album Blackout. Written by Jim Beanz, Marcella "Ms. Lago" Araica, Nate "Danja" Hills and Keri Hilson, and was also produced by Danja. The song recorded in 2006 during Britney's second pregnancy and was one of the first solo productions by Danja whose vocals are also used on the outro. The single's only promotion was at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, which was panned by many critics, with one deeming it as one of the worst performances to grace the MTV awards. The music video mixed to negative reviews from critics, who panned the lack of storyline & dancing. Despite all this the song itself received critical acclaim & became a massive commercial success worldwide by reaching top 5 peaks in 14 countries such as Canada, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Australia, UK, Switzerland, France & in the USA where it peaked at #3, becoming her 2nd highest charting single at the time. After her MTV performance, Cara Cunningham (then known as Chris Crocker) uploaded a video on YouTube in response to the criticism titled "Leave Britney Alone!", which made her an Internet celebrity and attracted attention from the media.

That iconic opening line "It's Britney Bitch" has to be one of the most brilliant lines in the history of pop music, then the hypnotic electronic beats and fuzzy basslines kicks in and you instantly know that you're in for something very different to Britney's previous work & its fantastic. The brooding futuristic production, pulsating rhythms & breathy vocals gives everything a slick and thrilling sound at the same time, and sets the perfect tone for what to expect from her 'Blackout' which was very ahead of its time. The song like the album itself is a pure masterpiece and despite being released at what was perhaps her darkest time period in the public eye, she still managed to deliver something incredible and you have to commend her for that.

5. Oops I Did It Again | 9.395 Highest Scores: 11: (Anita Hanjaab, Roba), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, GTH, pippa, Nick Jonas, Mack, Pandamic Tension, Tafty, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 7: (Jessie Where, blacksquare, Lukuzz)

Let's kick off the all important top 5 in almighty style with Oops I Did It Again, released in April 2000 as the lead single from Britney's 2nd studio album of the same name, and her 6th single overall. Written and produced by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. The lyrics refer to a woman who views love as a game, and she decides to use that to her advantage by playing with the emotions of a boy who likes her. The bridge features spoken dialogue which references the hit 1997 film 'Titanic'. Upon its release it received mainly positive reviews from music critics & became a massive commercial success worldwide by topping the charts in at least 20 countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland & in the UK, becoming her 3rd chart topper there. In the USA it only managed a #9 peak due to Jive Records not issuing a physical release, as they were focused on album sales, a tactic which worked as her 2nd album sold over 1.32 Million copies in its first week there. The song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001. The iconic accompanying music video was directed by Nigel Dick; it depicts Britney dancing on Mars dressed in a red bodysuit. It went on to receive three nominations at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

Probably one of the most meta pop moments of all-time, its something that would have never existed without 'Baby One More Time', as despite having a similar formula to it, this manages to take the essence of what worked before, while at the same time takes some unexpected and unorthodox deviations to create one of Britney's most iconic and signature career hits that successfully continued the momentum built up by her first album & singles. Britney was simply too big to fail at the time and whatever she released it would have been successful anyway. However, now that her direction and sound was firmly established there was no going back. There was a lost riding on 'Oops' being the first new single to launch a new album cycle, the title alone is a knowing, self-referential nod to the role that the track was fulfilling. It successfully evolves her sound with one of the most recognisable intros in pop music, the thumping double synth stabs, catchy chorus and that tempo sustained throughout is glorious thanks to the stellar production. Then there's that now iconic tongue in cheek spoken interlude between Britney and her lover (voiced by Max Martin), which went onto become a pop-culture phenomenon in its own right. This has to be the lead single, it wouldn't have made any sense in any other context and what a brilliant offering it was, an incredibly fun pop song.

'Stronger' got my 11 that should've gone to 'Gimme More' because it NEEDED to get the placing it deserves! I really hope it can push for #3 but I suspect #4 is where it drops. Which is still a great result! An all timer. Pop masterpiece. wub.gif

At #4 is one of my personal all-time faves - Stronger, released in October 2000 as the 3rd single from Britney's 2nd studio album Oops I Did It Again. Written and produced by Max Martin & Rami Yacoub. The song was one of the several tracks recorded in Sweden with Max & Yami at Cheiron Studios. The track features self-empowerment lyrics about a girl who is tired of her cheating boyfriend and decides to move on without him. Upon release it received acclaim from music critics, with many deeming it the best song on the album & became a global success, reaching top 5 peaks in Austria, Germany & Sweden, while reaching top 10 peaks in Ireland, Switzerland, Finland and in the UK. In the USA it peaked at #11 on the Top 100, becoming the album's 2nd highest charting hit there. The song ranked at number 37 on Rolling Stone's "The 50 Most Inspirational LGBTQ Songs of All Time" list.

One of Britney's greatest achievements in pop music and its something that became a lot more meaningful long after its release. Opening with that glorious snarling electric guitar riff then the aggressive thumping beat kicks in and you can already tell that you're in for something very different to what she's done before with its heightened drama as she belts out the chorus with almighty confidence & never lets up until the middle eight before coming back with a new melody and distorted beats & therefore this pop masterpiece takes you on one hel of thrill ride from start to finish. The visuals that accompanies the song is equally as iconic and remains one of the most toweringly epic in her extensive back-catalogue. Despite its somewhat mixed commercial success, it's #7 peak in the UK meant that it was her first to miss the top 5, doesn't take away how prominent and well-regarded it has become, especially in relation to her career & how successfully it pushes those bondaries to become an absolute powerhouse of a song, that has now become a triumphant anthem of survival.

3. Baby One More Time | 9.729 Highest Scores: 11: (TimConArtist, Nick Jonas, Mack), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, Jade, Slayer, Nick F1, One For Sorrow, JLJ, GTH, ready for it, blacksquare, Tafty, Chapman, Roba, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 8/8.5: (Pandamic Tension, Herbs, Scene, Lukuzz)

Coming in at #3 is the one that started it all Baby One More Time, the debut single by Britney Spears released in September 1998 from her debut studio album of the same name. Written by Max Martin and produced by Martin and Rami. Britney had originally been envisioned as a "Sheryl Crow music, but younger more adult contemporary", but after spending about 6 months working on material, she hadn't heard any hits, until she started working with Max Martin in Sweden & heard the demo for this track which was then titled "Hit Me Baby One More Time" & the rest was history. The song was actually written for Backstreet Boys & TLC, but they both rejected it. The label thought the song would work for the English group Five, but they also passed on it. Britney felt very excited for it, but other executives were concerned that the line "Hit Me" would condone domestic violence. The title was revised to "...Baby One More Time". Upon release it became a worldwide sensation, topping the charts in more than 20 countries worldwide, including the USA & UK, where it earned quintuple and triple-platinum certifications from each country. Respectively it was the UK's best selling single of 1999 & has been named as one of the best selling singles of all-time , with over 10 million copies sold. In 2020, Rolling Stone named "...Baby One More Time" as the greatest debut single of all time. In 2021, the song was ranked at number 205 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Britney was only 16 years old when this was recorded & has stated that this was one of her favourite songs in her back catalogue along with "Toxic" & "He About To Lose Me".

Bet this result will shock some of you, a song of this magnitude settling for a #3 spot, but look at that 9.7 average though, that would be a winner in most other rates. Throughout most of the rate this was in the runner-up spot, but got overtaken by a slew of 11 scores by one of the other entries. Iconic, legendary, influenciial, for any upcoming artist take notes THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE AN ENTRANCE. Without us even knowing it at the time Britney's debut single became an event, despite arriving 6 months after its American release, the buzz was already deafening & will change your lives forever. A little dramatic there I know, but this song is just so incredible with its easily relatable message delivered with the right amount of sass & set to thrilling pop instrumentals such as drums patterns, guitars & pianos all hitting the right tempos at just the perfect moments, along with the funky beats, sizzling synths that compliments Britney's distinctive vocals beautifully & then there's that explosive euphoric monster chorus that pops in all the right ways. Each of theme elements delivers an almighty pop masterpiece for the ages & even after more than 20 years this juggernaut of a pop song still sounds incredible.

At the runner-up spot is Buzzjack's favourite (& mine) favourite Britney ballad Everytime, released in May 2004 as the 3rd single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written by Britney herself & her background singer Annet Artani & produced by Guy Sigsworth. After her relationship with Justin Timberlake ended in 2002, she became friends with her background singer Annet Artani. They started writing songs together at Britney's house in Los Angeles, and then travelled to Lombardy, Italy, where they collaborated on this track. Upon release it received universal acclaim from music critics, & commercially became a global success by topping the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland & UK, and reached top 10 peaks in 16 other countries such as Canada, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark & Switzerland. In the USA it reached a #15 peak on the Billboard charts, becoming her 11th top 40 hit there. The music video's cinematography was inspired by the 1995 movie "Leaving Las Vegas" & was directed by Dave LaChapelle. The original concept had Spears kill herself from a drug overdose, but that part of the plot was removed after it received criticism from organizations such as Kidscape, who perceived it as a glamorization of suicide. This track was one of the first songs finished for the album & Britney named this & 'Touch Of My Hand' as the most personal songs on the album.

This was at the #3 spot for much of the rate, until it got a slew of 11 scores & overtook 'BOMT'. In-fact this song ended up scoring the most 11 scores & in the end was only 1.5 points behind the winner. Haunting and yet heavenly at the same time this stunning pop ballad has a fragile tenderness to it with its echoed pianos, lullaby production & breathy vocals. Yet at the same time this doesn't follow the conventional pop ballad route, thanks to its stripped back instrumentation & lack of studio trickery creates something well & truly incredible & perhaps dare I say it, her best vocal performance of her career. Heartfelt & emotional, everything about this packs an almighty punch & so glad we got to experience this as a lifelong Britney fan. A very risky choice to follow a global #1 smash hit, but thankfully the fans & general public mades this masterpiece an unlikely smash hit. There's nothing in Britney's extensive back catalogue quite like this & that's what makes this so special.

There you have it Buzzjack your #1 Britney single is Toxic, released in January 2004 as the 2nd single from Britney's 4th studio album In The Zone. Written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant, with additional writing from Cathy Dennis and Henrik Jonback. It was initially offered to Kylie Minogue for her album 'Body Language', but she turned it down. The song features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and surf guitar. It's Bollywood strings are sampled from Laxmikant–Pyarelal's "Tere Mere Beech Mein" (1981). The original single choices were between "(I Got That) Boom, Boom" & "Outrageous", but Britney selected 'Toxic' instead. Upon release it received acclaim from critics, and became a huge global smash hit by topping the charts in 11 countries, including Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Norway & in the UK, as well as top 5 peaks in a further 15 countries such as New Zealand, Sweden, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland & Spain. In the USA it became her 4th top 10 hit there by reaching #9, and became her first top 10 hit there since 'Oops I Did It Again' in 2000. The song won Best Dance Recording at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, marking the first Grammy win of Britney's career and has become one of her signature songs and is widely cited as among the most influential and innovative songs in pop music. The song has been included in multiple all-time lists of best songs, including by Pitchfork, NME and, in 2021, was ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Britney has revealed that this is her favourite song in her catalog.

This was pretty much the winner from the start, I mean just look at that average 10.0 a perfect score for a perfect song & I would love to thank everybody whose taken part in this rate & made it a massive success. To think that the song's writers thought that this was too weird to be a hit, but thankfully they were proven wrong. Hearing this for the first time back in 2003 I knew it was something special, even if it was quite far down the tracklisting at #6, quite baffling when you think about it. Well anyway the production by Bloodshy & Avant is top notch by combining many elements that should not work - into a timeless pop masterpiece that even to this day still sounds fresh exciting and yet at the same time captures that time period perfectly. Everything about this pop classic is fantastic down to the twangy guitars, frantic techno beats & those classic high pitched string melodies are just sublime with Britney's etheral vocals sitting on top of everything beautifully. This is Britney's greatest achievement in pop music no question & a well and truly deserved winner choice.

I can’t believe Kylie turned it down! While I don’t think anyone could have marched Britney with it, I think Kylie would have suited the song too.

I remember back then she commented that the demo version she heard was vastly different to the version of the song we all know. I'm not honestly sure it should have suited Kylie to be fair.
