If this is anything like The Way

Posted by: Barbariser 10th April 2014, 10:26 PM

I heard The Way a few days ago and it still slays! This is much sooner than I would have expected a 2nd album from her, but yay.

Posted by: T▲FT 10th April 2014, 11:14 PM

Ahhhh. Very, VERY excited for this. Her debut was brilliant (and has earned her a couple of Billboard awards I think!) Very intrigued to hear what she has to bring us with her follow up!

Posted by: d__ 12th April 2014, 12:01 PM

She wanted it out in February. But they brought big names for it this time around. And to be honest... she's very much a pop artist.

Posted by: Neesha123 17th April 2014, 10:56 AM

Ariana has announced 'Problem' as her lead single from her upcoming sophomore album, which is scheduled to be released on April 28th. She will be performing the single live at the White Party on April 26th, as well as at the Radio Music Awards on April 27th.

She's been working with Ryan Tedder and Max Martin along with the producers from her first album, like Harmony Samuels & Tommy Brown. She's featuring on Chris Brown's single 'Don't Be Gone Too Long.' Judging by her tweets she's also collaborated with Iggy Azalea

Seriously excited for this! w00t.gif

I was such a stan of her last album and her live show was so good in October, but something feels really off about her at the moment?

yh i sort of agree, but judging by the few previews of her new songs she played during a livestream i'm really looking forward to her new material. The main problem is her management and lack of promo, if they can get it right this year, i believe this could be a big year for her!

Posted by: barbaric_dan 17th April 2014, 11:36 AM

Thankfully it seems Sam & Cat is getting cancelled as Jenette McCurdy is giving Nickelodeon problems. So she'll be able to focus on the record.

I am looking forward to this!

My interest in this has now skyrocketed thanks to Iggy kink.gif Although I loved Ariana's first album anyway so was always looking forward to what she had planned for after.

Looking forward to this a lot! Don't really listen to her début at all ('Popular Song' aside), but I'm hoping if this is good I can fully invest myself!

She's just had her highest charting single, and most likely what will end up being her biggest selling single, to date, I think she's more popular than ever right now, so yeah, her name added will create a lot more interest.

That doesn't really disprove the point. She's had a top five song, woo.

Ariana hasn't, I guess that was the point. She has the huge fanbase and Iggy can add more interest from the general public since she's doing well on the radio atm to make it a possible hit.

Posted by: T▲FT 18th April 2014, 03:40 PM

None of Ariana's songs got pushed over here in the UK though, did they? Wasn't the album "Digital only" or something?

It did have a physical over here, I own it myself kink.gif but they most certainly didn't push any of the singles.

Calum, having a top 5 hit shows that you have quite a following, surely laugh.gif She's improved on the previous single's peak with every release so far, so her fanbase is evidently growing, not sure you can say Iggy's name won't add extra interest here.

Ooh it did? ohmy.gif Did you buy it on release week? I swear there was some point where she was digitally only (I'm assuming opening week), but my chart knowledge is crap so idk. laugh.gif

Posted by: C▲meron 18th April 2014, 06:57 PM

The Way got to #11 on itunes (I think) on release day and charted at #41 sad.gif I hope this can crack the uk top 40 as so many songs on her debut deserved to smash (Tattooed Heart and Piano obvs)

So excited!!!

Posted by: mr_aly 18th April 2014, 07:01 PM

I think maybe this was more to boost Iggy's profile in the US, perhaps?

I think it was the first week of release but it could've been an import at that point maybe, was from Amazon.co.uk. I definitely saw it in HMV after that at some point though.

#41 was a gutting peak for The Way after it did so well on iTunes, that's what you get with a midweek release I guess. sad.gif

Definitely but Ariana has been saying for a while she wanted to collab with Iggy, I actually remember Max from Capital mentioning it to both in various interviews, maybe she was partially responsible for this to actually happen lol (and I know this doesnt really mean anything but ever since the collab was announced Iggy's Twitter followers have been going up FAST)

Posted by: T▲FT 18th April 2014, 09:14 PM

Ariana has updated her cover photo on facebook with a picture saying "9 Days until 'Problem'" biggrin.gif

Posted by: Eric_Blob 19th April 2014, 01:37 AM

Ariana + Iggy could potentially give Shakira + Rihanna huge competition for sexiest video of the year. Ariana looks so good on the single cover. Wow.

I liked her previous songs, but they were all very 90's R&B, she should do a song more modern.

Posted by: KrustyJack 19th April 2014, 10:34 AM

Aint nothing wrong with 90s R&B! wub.gif

Posted by: barbaric_dan 19th April 2014, 12:36 PM

LOL as if you think Ariana and Iggy will be anything like Shakira & Rihanna, remember she's still a Nickelodeon artist and the song premieres at a Disney music award!!!

Posted by: barbaric_dan 19th April 2014, 12:37 PM

And yes her album was digital only for the first week, after it charted it got released to stores as a physical. I remember moaning to mutual friend Colleen Ballinger about it.

Posted by: Ryan. 19th April 2014, 01:07 PM

Apparently the song is produced by Max Martin according to ATRL forum! biggrin.gif

The album was supposed to come out in February but they decided to get more generic producers involved. There's a lot riding on this era as she had a fluke hit single, an okay selling album but that's about it.

I am intrigued by this though, I wasn't expecting a Max Martin single, more like a rehash of "The Way".

And you know this how ? It just seems your making this up tbh dry.gif

Posted by: barbaric_dan 20th April 2014, 05:19 PM

Isn't it a bit obvious? "The Way" was a big hit single in the US, and failed to capture the same success anywhere else, and she was unable to get another, the album has sold 376,000 copies in the United States which really isn't that great considering her exposure. Granted, lack of actual promotion from her was a key issue, but I couldn't go on a single internet page without some advert for her.

PS. I'm not hating, I'm actually a huge fan of album #1.

Yours Truly has sold 422k so far, i feel like last year was more about setting a platform for her, hopefully they really go all out this era, although i have little faith in her management team sad.gif

Posted by: barbaric_dan 20th April 2014, 05:54 PM

The problem they have is how to market her... is she a Mariah wannabe? Is she the cutesy girl from Nickelodeon? Who actually is she?

I hope this era proves me wrong. I do agree with your statement of marking her way in, and her AMA performance helped her a fair amount. It's a shame that "Yours, Truly" was essentially an elongated EP. It's such a good record.

Posted by: Let Go For 2nite 21st April 2014, 11:06 AM

How much did Yours truly sell in the UK? And I think it will eventually go GOLD in the US once album #2 is out.

Tbh, Her album was only released in autumn last year. 372,000 or 422,000 is not bad at all

Posted by: Neesha123 21st April 2014, 02:52 PM

It sounds great, especially the bit right at the end when the bass comes in. I hope the rap verse uses that beat! This is probably her first single that people can say doesn't sound like Mariah Carey too much lol.

I agree it's good for one hit single but I think it's silly to try and pretend there werent 2 other singles for this era

But anyway "Problem" sounds interesting

Posted by: T▲FT 22nd April 2014, 04:26 PM

It sounds too shouty for me. sad.gif I won't just judge it on that, but that clip was a bit eek for me. (Although it's nice to hear someone actually sing shout as opposed to warbling and shrilling I guess.

Posted by: Let Go For 2nite 22nd April 2014, 04:31 PM

I think it goes very sweet sounding (her voice) to very noisy in the chorus but I think it will grow on me.

Shouting, wailing, yelling, her voice always sounds very sweet to me wub.gif

You can listen to another preview http://www.961kiss.com/articles/trending-104650/listen-ariana-grande-shares-new-problem-12290578 which lets us listen to what I assume is the chorus. It actually reminds me of 'Talk Dirty'!

Posted by: ░░‽░` 25th April 2014, 10:39 PM

it sounds f***ing atrocious. massively oversung vocals, to weird male whisperings and a horn section. total mess.

disappointing given she has such potential which she isn't showing with everything but the spam sink productions.

It does aswell! Hopefully she can get a decent hit with it

Posted by: barbaric_dan 26th April 2014, 08:13 AM

I'm not going to go by the clips, as they do seem weak in comparison to previous material, and I am sure her team wouldn't be putting average stuff out.

Posted by: Ryan. 27th April 2014, 01:15 AM

Here is a low quality live performance of the song! It sounds amazing and it definitely sounds like a song that is going to be a massive hit this summer (in the US at least kink.gif)!

Posted by: T▲FT 27th April 2014, 01:25 AM

Why does she shout the hook? It's the off putting thing about this song for me (and the fact there's no proper chorus)! Everything else sounds good though, particularly Iggy's rap!

Posted by: Ryan. 27th April 2014, 11:40 AM

Apparently the UK release date is July 6th! I suppose it's only just over 2 months away.

At the beginning I was a bit dissapointed with the chorus, however, its such a grower. I'm addicted to it now. Also, I love Iggy's verse, its pure gold rap perfection.

Its already #1 on US iTunes selling 3x more than #2. Probably it's going to be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) opening week in sales of the year in US.

Fancy is also climbing quickly. Iggy Azalea must be delighted. heart.gif

That surprises me so... they were inviting strangers of the street to her secret gig in London eight months ago.

It must have something to with her hype + Iggys name.

Posted by: Ryan. 29th April 2014, 05:56 PM

I don't think Iggy's feature is creating many extra sales as I don't think she has much of a core fanbase at all, she benefits from good radio airplay and the casual fans that come with that. Ariana has a similar fanbase to the likes of Demi or Selena who will make sure the song does well immediately, but 'Problem' does seem to have more hype than 'The Way' due to the longer build-up there seems to have been which has created the extra sales.

Posted by: JosephTheVamps 29th April 2014, 06:12 PM

I think Iggy most definitely is helping the song over here, she does have a fairly decent-sized fanbase from what I've seen, and Ariana's not exactly that huge a name in the UK right now anyway. It'll be benefiting the song in the UK more than the US anyway.

When 'The Way' was released it got to like #11 on itunes straight away so I think they fact fans have now heard this they are wanting to buy it. I also think Iggy does not have the massive fanbase some think she does because at the end of the day did her album not only sell 8k? which is still good.

I think Iggy's verse on the song is perfect and I hope she continues to build her fan base biggrin.gif

She is quite well known here I think her album went top 10 here and I believe was number on iTunes for a bit here as well . Also she's got quite a big twitter following .

That's just her fanbase though, Iggy will help the song appeal to a second fanbase and also some casual listeners might be intrigued by her name. I do know Ariana has quite a big fanbase you know kink.gif

I think she's a lot more well known here than your giving her credit for personally I think the problem is just her songs need to be supported more by radio over here and she needs to do a bit of promo here than she will be fine.

I think if she were that well known, The Way would've gone top 40 and the other singles would've all done better IMO. It's the radio and TV airplay that will increase how much she's known. Don't get me wrong, she's not a fanbase act quite in the way that Cody is, and The Way turned out to be quite a decent sized hit considering its peak, but I definitely think Iggy's helping generate some interest in this song, she's quite a big name after all.

How many times does it need to be covered though? laugh.gif

I don't think either of them are particularly advantageous in helping this song be as big as it can be. Ariana clearly has a massive following and there's UK fans screaming out for it (and at the same time she'll probably get a few casual sales). Iggy's had a fluke top 5 single, so the only way she's really helping 'Problem' is by having people who will go "oh it's her that did 'Fancy', will it be as good? probably not, but I'll give it a listen"

I literally can't believe how incredible this is — possibly my pop song of the year as of right now

Posted by: JosephTheVamps 30th April 2014, 07:04 AM

Fancy was far from a fluke, lol, it's looking to re-enter the top 10 this week, and has gone no lower than #11 in three weeks so far. If it were a fluke, it would have plummeted a la Bounce and Change Your Life. Work was also quite a hit for her anyway, and it remains her highest seller, so I'm not exactly sure why you don't think she has some kind of fanbase, Calum.

Posted by: Li▲m 30th April 2014, 07:14 AM

Iggy's actually had two top 10s, and two further top 20s. Sure they were hardly million sellers but Work head up well and Fancy looks like it will do the same. Far from a "fluke". She's not exactly One Direction or Rihanna as far as fanbases go of course but she's building a following, her fans are more likely to be interested in songs with her on them.

Posted by: barbaric_dan 30th April 2014, 09:45 AM

You see in the US I think "Problem" is making "Fancy" a bigger hit on iTunes. People are checking that out because they like her on "Problem" and the video for "Fancy" is pretty amazing.

There is no doubt in my mind her fan base has increased since "The Way" was first released here in the UK. But I'm gonna say it again... her fan-only free secret gig was an absolute mess. Everyone that was there got in with no problems asked.

Posted by: ░░░░ 30th April 2014, 05:14 PM

""I am growing up and coming into my own, but I don't feel the need to do anything too outrageous to convey it you know?" she added. "I want to let my music speak for me. I'm still me, I'm just coming into my adulthood and I'm proud of how I'm doing it too," she wrote, concluding her e-mail with a text smiley face."

I've noticed that too, she lacks drive/presence and she's like a backup singer singing and dancing to the song somewhere else.

Iggy is brilliant and the song has grown on me a lot! ohmy.gif

Posted by: ▲Tyler▲ 30th May 2014, 10:29 PM

What a terrible video considering the caliber of the song.

Iggy's wig has more stage presence than her. And watching Big Sean's lips half the video was redundant to say the least. Not even Iggy could save that video from being a total bore. Ariana has a voice, there's no denying that. But, replace her with any popstar imaginable in her scenes and it would have been... maybe actually interesting.

3/10 It gets 3 stars for Iggy trying to breathe life into it. Too huge of a load for anyone to hold, I'm afraid. drama.gif

I agree that Ariana always seems a bit dead-behind-the-eyes whenever I've seen her perform and this video is no exception. There's something not right about that girl. She has the makings of a Stepford Wife. Are we sure she's a real human? I can't imagine she's ever actually had a 'problem' other than needing her batteries changed every once in a while. Also why is her hair always like that?

The song's a jam anyway which is the main thing.

Posted by: Jonjo 31st May 2014, 01:41 AM

I think she has confidence issues when performing tbh. I saw some Christmas show in which she performed a couple of songs and she stood in a weird position, like she was in the corner or something. laugh.gif Bless her. But yeah, I get peoples points about her stage presence, but as I said before I find it quite endearing and actually pretty cute (but maybe I'm just being ridiculously biased right now laugh.gif ).

EDIT: Oh and she announced on Facebook that 'Problem' will be Radio 1's "Track of the Day" (a good indicator as to what they may support!) this Sunday! biggrin.gif

Posted by: mr_aly 31st May 2014, 11:07 AM

I was watching the video and thinking she's very lacking in the star quality department, I'm glad a lot of people here seem to have picked up on that too.

Posted by: Rabbit Heart 31st May 2014, 11:23 AM

Her lip-synching IS very strange. It doesn't match how she actually sings it at all, she mimes way too gently. It just reaffirms my issues with her in that she portrays this image (i say portray but I obviously don't know if it's real or not) that she could be easily knocked over with a feather.

One of my favourite posts in a while, fantastic.

----

But seriously, I'm pissed off with this video. It's such a huge track, as Jake said when it premiered (or somebody anyway), this is like her Hit Me Baby One More Time, to really propel her into being a huge star. It still will be, because people are being a song not a video. Regardless, this is so lacklustre and as mentioned by others, completely lacks any star quality. How can you take a song with such power and energy and match it with such a lazy performance? Her miming is horrendous. The direction is clearly trying to go for something 90s-esque (I do get Groove Is In The Heart vibes), which is fine, but is done with minimal effort. Like I said this will be a smash, but nobody is going to look back at this like they do with early Britney tracks and think that the whole package was a classic.

Iggy was pretty fantastic though, presence is abundance.

EXACTLY.

How can you be in the beginning stages of being a pop star and not have any stage presence, at all.

I mean I can't think of a single pop star that just lacks it completely. Like said before, a pop star sells the music, the music isn't suppose to sell the artist. It should be an equal balance. Unless you're setting out to just be forgotten after one smash. There's nothing else to care about this campaign, besides the song and the artist that is guest appearing on it.

The interest in her will wane quickly if she doesn't spruce some shit up. Sorry, I probably sound super dramatic... But, the fact that video is such a wasted opportunity is extremely frustrating.

Posted by: Dillan 31st May 2014, 07:29 PM

She just looks very, very bored. (She does for all performances and music videos tbh). And she can't dance, so I'm not really sure why she tried to in this video and in performances.

However, the song still remains excellent.

She always has her hair like that because when she was on Victorious she was made to dye her hair every week for 4 years which damaged it so she wears extensions but if she has her hair down they show so she tries to have it in a style which is comfortable for her

Posted by: Liаm 31st May 2014, 08:44 PM

I can only echo what everyone has said about the video... She just looks like she's trying for too hard to be an innocently sexy and dainty girl next door with the way she softly mimes everything, but there's no need because she's got the look nailed down. I don't think her dancing is really that bad, I guess Iggy being such a star doesn't help and only serves to highlight Ariana's flaws.

Regardless of the video, the song is seriously astounding and is going to be a properly colossal hit.

This song is a whole decade old now ohmy.gif the production does sound pretty of its time but wow, that has flown by.

Reading this thread from the beginning was quite a wild ride. Who would have known she'd be going so strong 10 years later? Iggy Azalea being such a big draw at the time and then almost immediately later not being so. And... somebody bragging that they know Colleen Ballinger! laugh.gif

Other than casually liking My Way, the Yours Truly era pretty much passed me by at the time (my bad!) but Problem really made me sit up and pay attention! I've been a huge fan ever since. wub.gif Crazy that it's been 10 years.
