Hype! going to predict Ace of Base to take the crown.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 3rd September 2022, 07:42 PM
Before I start, I will say I really enjoyed this edition and you all did very well with finding some really obscure gems that weren't cheap. It ended up being very close at the top and I'm pleased to see it, because last time I hosted this, while I enjoyed it, a cheap song that should've been vetoed won by a landslide, it just makes it all the more fun when you're not sure what's going to happen!
I will be revealing the votes in chronological order of year of release, this turned out to have some wonderful twists and turns throughout the results so I hope you enjoy. Each of the votes are hidden in the pop culture moments listed in the voting thread. Songs will show up once they have points.
I purposefully kept the participants and voters list a secret for maximum mystery, so I hope that some of these picks can surprise you!
Starting us off then we go right back to 1967 in the summer of love where one of the most famous album covers ever was released...
Posted by: Yobnedor 3rd September 2022, 07:45 PM
Can I just also say, I’m glad the voting period was as long as it was. It meant I could enter! I was away most of August so I’m glad I got the chance to squeeze my results in before it closed!
I wasn’t able to do BJSC because of the deadlines last month and I had FOMO so this bridged the gap for me amazingly!
Thanks for hosting

Judith Durham - The Olive Tree - Jade
So it was Jade who sent the oldest song in the contest, from the sadly recently deceased lead singer of the Seekers, Judith Durham. A lovely choice and emotional song to listen to, I would give you a few facts here, but Jade has kindly done that for me
QUOTE
Good evening all,
First of all, thank you Chez for your awesome hosting - loved the layout of the voting thread! It turns out that my image was my 2nd favourite album of all time - 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', so that was pretty good going indeed my entry is from 1967, year of the legendary summer of love! On SyncTube it was pointed out that this entry is the oldest in the contest, so that is rather cool *.*
I chose this opportunity to showcase the late, great, Judith Durham <3 I stumbled across this song in about 2014 I reckon, while in the midst of listening to every top 40 hit of the 60s (...yes I've always loved a musical project and no I didn't quite finish it yet lol but got quite far) - and I was immediately taken in by her stunning vocal performance, the hopeful lyrics and those simply gorgeous strings. 'The Carnival Is Over' and 'I'll Never Find Another You' were both #1 hits for The Seekers, the group that Judith was lead singer for, but 'The Olive Tree' was a very minor solo hit (peaked somewhere in the 30s) so this felt like the perfect opportunity to unleash it, off the back of the sad news recently. I have no idea how this will do but hopefully, others will find her voice as beautiful as I do, may it always live on.
"I long to share a world of sweet contentment there" <3
anyway, now on to my own votes after feeling compelled to write about Judith at this late hour ;o
12 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 10 Exposé - Point of No Return 08 Killer - Liar 07 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 06 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me 04 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 03 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 01 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control
xx Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby xx Goldfinger - Superman xx Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life xx Michelle McManus - Emotional - I am not worthy x xx Emma Pollock - Adrenaline
12 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 10 Exposé - Point of No Return 08 Killer - Liar 07 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 06 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me 04 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 03 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 01 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control
So, Ace of Base are our first leaders of the night, hotly tipped to win, will they stay like this by the end of the night? A further great set of votes here, though no Michelle, Jade? How could you </3
Our next set of votes are in 1976 where a hit movie turned a struggling boxer into a worldwide icon ;o

sorry for stepping on your toes there Chez. I should've known you would have an idea up your sleeve for the presentation. I just felt compelled to write some words as it was quite a special entry for me, even if it clicks for nobody else I'm really glad I sent it. <3 so yeah... hoping my 12 points can win the whole thing ;o

Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) - Ansel
Ansel sent this Soul-disco sounding hybrid which is impressively obscure as I can't find a lot of facts about it or them. It would certainly fit right at home on a 70s disco compilation album for sure x

Expose and Mariya benefit from further points to take the lead at this early stage, several songs overlooked in the last set of votes enter so we have just under half on the scoreboard.
Our next set of votes are from 1979 where we visit the movies again only to find in space, no one can hear you scream...

Clout - Save Me - kth
To the shock of everyone, Kath sends the one South African artist in the contest. An all female group formed in Johannesburg. They are best known in the UK for their #2 hit Substitute, but their cover of the popular country-pop song Save Me charted in many places too. It's very Fleetwood Mac-esque and really cool, not quite Soap Girls but almost there x

We do see something of a contender emerge as Exposé get a 12 to form a decent lead, as well as Jane Child on their heels, Kath (whose emoji in the name didn't copy over, I'll keep it in as it's iconic) also ensures the fellow revealees so far are both on the scoreboard with them,
Up next, we go to 1984 where we visit a book released 36 years prior that happened to have the same name, as there wasn't a lot of cultural happenings in this year x

Posted by: k👠th 3rd September 2022, 08:03 PM
I sent Clout because they're an iconic South African girl band and Save Me is very embedded in culture here and is played very often on radio and at bars and clubs to this day. I was shocked to see that it never dented the UK charts after their breakthrough with Substitute. Hopefully people didn't vote based on the wrong (and shoddy) version that was used in the Spotify playlist initially x
Ty Jade for the 5

Clout *.* great pick Kath. I do admit it did sound like something I've heard before tbh but 'Substitute' is their most recognisable to me.
Posted by: Bumblebrë 3rd September 2022, 08:07 PM
A couple of my faves unveiled already - the Judith Durham song was really lovely (I was being careful to make sure I was judging it solely on the song and not giving it a sympathy bonus but I do genuinely think it'd be ranked highly for me regardless, I see it was one Jade has been a fan of for many years before her death) and also really enjoyed the Clout song, serving South African Fleetwood Mac. I just listened to 'Rumours' not too long ago and this song wouldn't have sounded far out of place on it. Truly a shock that Kath was behind the South African entry
Nice idea to reveal from oldest to newest, gives me an idea of when to expect my votes to appear

Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love - Izzy
It was Iz who sent the Japanese City Pop hit that was a moderate success at the time, but in 2017, an eight minute remix was uploaded that took a hold of the YouTube algorithm that currently has over 63 million views and was probably many Westerners first exposure to city pop. A curious oddity indeed, Iz opts for the original though, how well will it do for him?

To the surprise of everyone, Iz's top 3 are all Asian entries, it does ensure quite a few debuts to the scoreboard. Nothing to Exposé puts their lead in jeopardy as Jane Child catches up

Daryl Hall - Dreamland - King Rollo
It wasn't Rollo who sent the oldest song this time, but still very much on brand with this prog and psychedelic-esque number from one half of the popular duo, Hall and Oates. This was his biggest hit as a solo performer, reaching top 5 in the US and top 30 over here. It's started out pretty well, let's see how it turns out.
QUOTE
First place in my vote goes to the beautiful song The Olive Tree by Judith Durham. I never expected to see a Rolloland act entered into this contest but in 2nd place is Adrenaline by Emma Pollock who was one of The Delgados who I sent to BJSC107 with 'No Danger'. She didn't sing the lead vocal on that one. Overall this was a good contest, this is how I voted:
12pts - Judith Durham - The Olive Tree 10 - Emma Pollock - Adrenaline 8 - Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 7 - Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) 6 - Killer - Liar 5 - Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 4 - Plumb - Real 3 - Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 2 - Aqua - Back To The 80’s 1 - K-Otic - I Surrender
28 Exposé - Point of No Return 27 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 23 Judith Durham - The Olive Tree (Jade) 18 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 17 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 16 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime (King Rollo) 16 Killer - Liar 15 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love (Izzy) 15 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 13 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 12 Little by Little - Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni 10 Perfume - Electro World 10 Emma Pollock - Adrenaline 10 Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 09 Aqua - Back to the 80s 09 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 08 Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) (Ansel) 08 PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round 07 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me (kth) 04 Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 04 Plumb - Real 04 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend
Not much is given to the contenders, but Rollo supports his fellow retro songs and Judith Durham gets the 12 to take her into 3rd at this early stage, just five songs still to appear on the scoreboard.
Next up, staying in 1986, the debut of a certain animated family on the Tracey Ullman show...

Still fascinated by the phenomenon that is 'Plastic Love' randomly getting stuck in the YouTube algorithm, moreso than I am actually a fan of the song really but it was nice - Iz sending the normiest of the Asian entries though
Surprising that there were so many entries older than Rollo's Enjoyed the Daryl Hall track, was one that grew on me as it went along iirc.

Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass - Qween
Qween sent this little known number by the 80s singer best known for the English language cover of the song, Gloria, a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic. This one was certainly less so, recorded in the days where she was somewhat less relevant with the help of SAW, it only reached 78 here. It's a rather nice 80s stomper though x

It's also apparently been used in Drag Race lip sync, whatever that entails x

J00ps was one of our early leaders and could still be in contention, he avoids too much foot shooting at this early stage, fellow 80s pop song, Laura Branigan particularly benefits.
Let's now check in with the current leader, as we enter the 90s at 1990, where the first fully fossilised Tyrannosaurus Rex was found.

Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love - Riser
Riser sent this one-hit wonder from the quirkily styled singer. This song was a big hit in the US, but stalled in the UK due to the singer refusing to appear on Top of the Pops due to her seeing it as a sellout. It's my favourite fun fact of the contest, I don't know if Jordan knew that but I kinda love it (cool song too x)

Another contender is revealed, and a new leader alert as Lenka takes over after shadowing after the last few votes, it's a while to go before we get to her year of release, so how long can she hold on for?
Next up, our first leader of the night, found in 1993, the year of the nation's cutest stuffed animals...

Great entries there from J00p and Jordan! The former got my 10 points and was my favourite total discovery (as I knew the chorus of 'Happy Nation' at least via a YouTube clip )

Not one I expected from Jonjo. Good track, prefer the taxi one still though. Some points starting up now for us.

Oh wow thanks so much for top marks, Rollo loved your entry (gave it 7 points) although I am a fan of what I know by Hall & Oates, so I did hope for good things.
And thanks for your 7 points.
I did think my entry would be fairly obvious as there weren't many other songs that had my sort of sound to them.

Ace of Base - Happy Nation - Addy!
Addy sent this under-the-radar release from the Swedish pop group. It gave me really strong new age and Enigma vibes, the first verse is sung entirely in Latin and it was worked on by Jonas "Joker" Berggren who attempted to write the song in response to the reports of his associations with neo-nazi skinheads as a positive, hymn of life.

We see a bit of a bellwether set of votes here (apart from their 12 which they are charitable too) as many contenders gain points, Lenka holds on but Aqua, Vanessa Paradis, Exposé and the newly contending Tilly and the Wall are hot on her heels.
Next up, 1997, the year of the the first cloned animal ;o

I still own hundreds of Beanie Babies. They must be collectively worth literally tens of pounds.
Great choice from Addy, I'm no huge fan of the other Ace Of Base tracks I've heard but I really liked this one, loving the new age influence.
Posted by: Jade 3rd September 2022, 08:49 PM
Great entry, Addy *.* Ace of Base are quite hit-or-miss for me but I really like that one and 'Life Is A Flower'.

Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) - Vibe
Robyn was probably one of the most eyebrow raising artists here but thankfully, it's a very obscure remix of one of her less memorable hits (maybe as it always gets confused with Robin S' Show me Love). It's certainly very on brand for the 90s.

Only the top 10 from Vibe were counted (sadly as the last two could've used some more points x), not much changes though Jane Child has bounced back like she changed her mind about Top of the Pops , but Lenka maintains a small lead for now.

Goldfinger - Superman - WhoOdyssey
WhoOdyssey sent this number from punk and ska rock 90s band, Goldfinger, most popularly used in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater alongside many other things I haven't experiened oop x
Sadly Whoddy has seemingly forgotten about this completely, as no votes were submitted, moving on to 99 with an action movie that offered you the glimpse of a world never seen before...
Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life - gooddelta
It can only have been gooddelta who sent a UK Eurovision reject from 1999, we finished 12th that year but maybe we could've done better with this stomping fast-paced singalong song, it's quite an experience x

Vitamin C - The Itch - lewistgreen
Lewis sent this small hit from the turn of the century which really puts me in the mind of Holly Valance's cover of Kiss Kiss, though it predates that. The healthily named artist is best known for being a child star in the 1988 film, Hairspray and is currently the music executive at Netflix.

Same here very Green Day esque.
I didn't have that down as Rich but 'Saved My Life' also makes some sense being a Eurovision reject.

The Killer and Plumb songs were great discoveries for me <3
Wanted to boost them up a little above the (albeit excellent) Scandipop heavyweights that I already knew.
Oops at Sister Flop, it’s very highly regarded among UK Eurovision fans as ‘the one that got away’ but based on this tumbleweed reaction it might not have done much for us at Eurovision at all Interestingly it was issued as a single on dance label All Around The World, but didn’t chart. The production reminds me of the early Atomic Kitten singles, I love it!

K-Otic - I Surrender - Aaron.
Aaron sent this early 2000s hit from the short-lived Dutch pop group formed on the television programme Starmaker, not to be mistaken for the K-Pop band of the same name. The pan pipes on this are wonderful, they really put me in the mind of Emmelie Du Forest <3

Yeah mine wasn't really anything too serious. Bit childish but thought it was worth it as it was kinda boppy for me too lol.

Michelle McManus - Emotional - Cameron
Of course, Cameron sent Michelle McManus with this album track from The Meaning of Love. I debated canceling the contest there and then and nothing can truly compete with this but I settled with just taking three figures off her total vote numbers to give the other songs a chance x

Judith has really taken a tumble, I guess it makes sense for her points to be front-loaded, from others who were also drawn to going further back in time.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend - Chez Wombat
I must be honest, I really struggled to find an entry here, you were all so inspired that my two main choices - Yael Naim's New Soul and Peter, Paul & Mary's Puff the Magic Dragon just felt like they'd stick out too much, I had a lot of contemplation and in the end went with this old Apple advert song from 2008 as I figured enough people wouldn't know it, it's not as good as Heart Attack (my first BJSC 12 pointer <3) but those horns are still so fun x

Tilly and the Wall - Beat Control - BumbleBré
This group had another fascinating fun fact as they have a tap dancer to provide percussion rather than a drummer, they are now disbanded but this psychedelic-late 00s indie pop is very cool and has been going down quite a storm for Bre (sorry for the late reveal x)

Obama here with my votes for this contest
12 Damaris - Tusuykusun 10 Exposé - Point Of No Return 8 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation

Next up were Goldfinger, Michelle McManus, Laura Branigan and Mariya Takeuchi - I considered bumping Michelle up to 1 point for iconatry if I didn't have a strong enough top 10 but I think I enjoyed 'Adrenaline' a little too much to demote it
102 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation (Addy!) 97 Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 92 Aqua - Back to the 80s 85 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control (Bumblebré) 82 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby (Tafty) 82 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love (Riser) 83 Exposé - Point of No Return (J00prstar) 63 K-Otic - I Surrender (Aaron) 62 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass (Qween) 55 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend (Chez Wombat) 55 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime (King Rollo) 52 Plumb - Real (Dobbo) 51 Killer - Liar (Mango) 44 Damaris - Tusuykusun (Juan Carlos) 39 Clout - Save Me (kth) 38 Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) (Ansel) 36 Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life (gooddelta) 35 PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round (Roba) 33 Robyn feat. We didn't liaise with having the same top 2, we're just that on point x Bre's votes ensure that Ace of Base retake the lead for the first time since the first set of votes and pass 100, it's a good time to take over but there's still three votes to go and it's still so close, let's see what everyone's least favourite vampire story has to say about this x
Posted by: Bumblebrë 3rd September 2022, 10:24 PM
Me doing quite well thanks to the voters so far, particularly Lewis and RFC for the 12s x
I discovered 'Beat Control' from nighttime Radio 1 back when it first came out and it's been an intermittent earworm for me for a solid 14 years since then so finally a good opportunity to send it here. It is a little cheap by my song contest standards as it was *gasp* a UK top 100 hit but it deserved a lot better.
(also... a 10 swap with J00p )

Damaris just casually getting 36 points and Expose 30 in one fell swoop
Lenka narrowly take over but we now reach the awkward moment where they and the sender of Aqua have to give their votes so yeah, you see why I went with this order

Lenka - Trouble is a Friend - uhsting
So naturally uhsting sent one of the most recent songs He may not be into retro, but he's done very well here. Best known for the Show, this song followed it's predecessor in being used prominently in media, this time the show 902010. A very nicely animated video, only just missed my votes </3

Hi Chez!
Here are my votes for PFSC XI:
12 points: Damaris - Tusuykusun 10 points: Judith Durham - The Olive Tree 8 points: Clout - Save Me 7 points: Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 6 points: Aqua - Back To The 80’s 5 points: PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round 4 points: Exposé - Point of No Return 3 points: Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 2 points: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 1 point: Plumb - Real
Commiserations: Daryl Hall - Dreamtime K-Otic - I Surrender
Lenka is pretty much my childhood memory and I love a lot of her songs, particularly "Heart Skips A Beat"! This theme is a struggle for me as I know virtually know no relatively unknown retro songs back then so I went with her earlier hits.

Aqua - Back to the 80s - awardinary
So this reveal was probably a little harsh as I've just clocked Wardy hasn't won this contest yet and Addy and uhsting have, but at least the recency gives you the casting vote! This cut from their Greatest Hits album in 2009 has certainly outperformed my expectations, with references on literally every line spanning from twisted sister, MTV, M&M, Ronald Reagan, Rocky, Huey Lewis and the marvellous line 'Hooray for Cosby'...that one aged well x
But now let us find out our winner....

Ooft, so sorry uhsting but fate is a cruel mistress, nothing for Lenka and a seven for Ace of Base allows, neatly as it was in the very first set of votes, Ace of Base to take the lead and become your winner, congrats to Addy!
Full scoreboard coming up x

If only you could have been psychic Rob and predicted it to win. Oh well congrats to the winner I decided.
Unfortunately not. (Guess it helps that I saw you listening to it on Spotify which was how I knew it was yours haha).

watch the next theme be only Asian artist and then I’m gonna have to be FORCED to redeem myself from this utter tragedy

Congrats to Addy! Can't be more happy to finish 2nd My PFSC results keep telling me to join the pop bloc in BJSC
Thanks Chez for the presentation! I love the run and the suspension.

Damn, I didn’t think my entry was that bad!
Thanks for hosting! It was fun!

omg thanks everyone
this and Club Bizarre makes up for flopping in BJSC this year!!!

I must admit I preferred Ace of Base to Lenka as reflected in votes so I'm pleased with that winner.
20th is a tiny bit better for me. Was expecting bottom 5 or 3 lol.
Thanks for hosting Chez. Slick hosting and been fun following and commenting on.

YAY my favourite song won *.* a huge congrats to Addy and I'm happy with top 20 for a song that is 54 years old.
Thank you Chez for hosting, enjoyed this a lot.

Well done Addy! It is a decent lost single in the UK from a legendary band.
Really good results for Lenka and Aqua there, I expected Tilly to be a little higher but ultimately only 18 points from the top anyway!
Thanks for hosting Chez, been quite a fun one. Glad to see Sister Sway picked up in the end with a few high scores <3

Congrats to Addy and thanks to Chez for a great results presentation.
12th place isn't too bad for Dreamtime.

Girlicious being Travis makes complete sense, it’s eerie how much he has in common with 13 year old me *.*

Yep, I lost top 10 on a tiebreak with the song I gave a single point :')
Posted by: Roba! 3rd September 2022, 11:00 PM
Pretty sure Travis and maybe even Whoddy may have thrown some points to us. Nevermind.
Ooh 19th instead of 20th. I'll take a position higher!
Posted by: Bumblebrë 3rd September 2022, 11:03 PM
Wardy you're clearly better off without my points given you've got your biggest BJSC hit and possibly doing similarly or better this month with songs I didn't love and then coming 3rd here lmao ~ I'm not sure why you seem to be so fixated on my opinions of late when there are clearly a lot of other people who appreciate your poppier entries more Thank you for the last few points for Tilly though. x
Congrats Addy, a great winner in the end and Lenka is a very solid runner up too! Yass at Exposé being top 5 and Jane Child and especially Damaris also being top 10 alongside my own entry *.* the latter really doing a Poland after floundering for a while.
I wasn't sure what to expect from my own entry but I'm glad it got a good result here including quite a handful of medal positions, it's such an addictive song for me.
Thanks for the hosting Chez, a great edition of this! I can only hope the next one will be similarly inspired and high quality.

And breathe lol x
Thanks everyone, I'm so sorry that went on so long, I think I may have challenged myself with doing too many tasks while writing up the posts But I did want to do it justice as I really enjoyed the contest and there were some wonderful twists and turns, It was just too good to be true to have Ace of Base leading from the first vote chronologically and then leading again at the end, I apologise for anyone I gave a heart attack too x (Sorry Wardy, I didn't intend to mess with you, it just the reveal turned out quite misleading in your case :'( You'll win eventually, I'm sure of it x)
As for the results, I'm happy. Lenka was good, but I preferred Ace of Base and it feels a bit more fitting to the theme so happy with that winner, Expose and Damaris were looking like winning contenders early but both sadly tailed off after a good start (Damaris was actually winning doing the votes in order of receipt, this order of reveal just casually dumping 48 points on it in four votes ), but I'm really pleased they both stayed top 10. It was between Lenka and Ace of Base for the last section, Roba was the last set of votes so actually Ace of Base would've had a late comeback in both forms of reveal! Perfume felt particularly underappreciated though, I thought that would do really well D:
Hopefully, the baton will now pass to Addy for whenever the next one of these comes up!
Posted by: awardinary 3rd September 2022, 11:45 PM
Ok now my bitterness has ended, let me congratulate Addy on his win, and as we saw it was a song I voted for in the top half of my votes. Not one I was actually familiar with from Ace of Base, but I’ve always been a fan of their hits All That She Wants, Beautiful Life, Life Is A Flower and Always Have, Always Will. I wish they had more hits into the 2000’s but it wasn’t to be I guess. But yes, a good winner and glad I could help you see off the stiff opposition from Lenka!
Final note to Chez, thanks for the hosting. I know it wasn’t anything personal the way you delivered the results, it was purely just one of those rare times when I got my hopes up prematurely, because as we all know, anything can happen by the time the final set of votes are revealed! I anticipate a similar experience tomorrow evening too when BJSC results come through but that’s being optimistic.
Anyway time for bed, goodnight all.

I know 'Plastic Love' got a good revival with its remix (and hence was a little cheap to send places) but it is basically my favourite city pop track and as soon as I saw retro I locked myself into sending something from there as it's a wonderful genre (you know, we all could have done the Asian entries a little better as they were easily the best thing about this contest). Perfume in particular I thought would do very well.
nevertheless that's a great top 3 from the remainder, pretty much the right choices - thanks for putting this together Chez!

Congrats Addy! 'Happy Nation' fell just short of my points but thankfully didn't need them. I've known and loved 'Trouble Is A Friend' since 2009 so while I'm happy to see it top 2, I'm glad the winning song was a discovery for me.
Yay for 7th place! I was hoping my entry wasn't too cheap given how much of a hit it was in the US, so hopefully it was a discovery for most of you. I did not know about Jane's refusal to do TOTP and that it cost her a better UK chart peak, so thanks for including that in your commentary Chez . (Thanks for the brilliant hosting job overall too!)
I'm very surprised to see Robyn as low as 21st, although tbf she would've been an underwhelming winner given how loved she is here. I just figured that would give her an advantage especially with a remixed version of one of her hits. It got my 12 anyway so thanks for sending it, vibe. 'The Itch' and 'Drive By' both fell short of my votes too but disappointed to see them in the bottom two, they didn't quite deserve that.

First off, amazing hosting. It was a nail biter right to the final votes. Second, I thought awardinary had this in the bag with Aqua. Such a creative choice, but at the same time so straight forward and yes, one of their best.
Finally. Wow. Top 10. Unexpected absolutely as the first half I was LAST. I hope you that got the reference to Emmelie de Forest. I was expecting not to do well at all. But K-Otic basically raised me, so placing top 10 does mean a lot. Thank you.

Aww only saved from the bottom 3 by a deduction. Thought it might to a bit better, and Chez and Bre got my hopes up saying it deserved better then gave it one point between them
Thanks for hosting, good job. Decent enough top 3, one I liked quite a lot and then the two songs I ranked 10/11.
Posted by: Qween 4th September 2022, 09:42 AM
Thrilled for Shattered Glass! I had planned to send it BJSC a few times, but this felt like the right outing for it. As Bre said, very obviously my entry but Laura deserves the love.

Ohhh, I wish it was Lenka who won the contest. It was such an amazing and underrated song. I really had to play this at least 10 times before moving on back then. Also, we did an small jam using this song 2 months ago! Nonetheless, congratulations to Addy! I did not know much about your entry, but I'll add it to my Tb playlist just in case I wanna return.
Thanks Chez for the hosting and a small mention about my entry being used as 3rd "Naruto" opening. I knew chats would guess Iz, but sadly everyone's wrong. Thanks for the votes too Iz, Bray (yay for the rare +5), Tafty, and NocheLuna!

Oops sorry for the false hope! (Though in fairness 1 point is 10th place which is a fair bit better than where you ended up </3)

Ooh top 20 is better than I expected considering how 00s-leaning this edition was! I can't take much credit for finding my song as it comes from a friend who always finds the best hidden disco gems, I'm glad it found some fans here. Pleased to see Laura Branigan, Jane Child and Vanessa Paradis in the top 10 but Mariya Takeuchi deserved way better! Really surprising to see that so low considering what a cult classic it's become, such a beautiful introduction to city pop.

Sorry, only just catching up with this. A very deserved winner, it was my 10 pointer after all. As for my own very last minute entry, I guess I can't complain too much with a mid-table finish. Thanks for hosting and I made some great discoveries, in particular Lenka, Clout and Exposé

Apologies for the delay, but congrats Addy for winning and Chez Wombat for hosting.
As it was mentioned before, "Tusuykusun" is a Quechua song, although it has some brief lines in Spanish too. I think it identifies perfectly Peruvian culture, with the afro elements (cajón/box, tumbadora), as well as the strings (violin, guitar, charango), instruments (quena) and dance (danza de tijeras/scissor dance), so it was glad to see most of you enjoyed it.
