So does anyone have any news on this gem of a popstar? I know she's recorded a new album, but is there any more details? Insider goss?

I did a search online, and I only found an advert she's modeling in.

Posted by: Jake 14th October 2006, 10:18 PM

Her new album 'Trip The Light Fantastic' is due out in January.

The first single to be taken from it is 'Catch You'. I've heard the demo (which is excellent btw), very electro-poppy, I hold out much hope for this album biggrin.gif

Posted by: Davidyay 14th October 2006, 10:19 PM

Catch You is probably out in January.

A demo of Catch You with Cathy Dennis has leaked and a song called Colour Me In. Both are some of the best songs she's ever done...the video of Catch You was directed by Sophie Muller (she's done Gwen, Sugababes etc) as well, so should be really cool.

Come back Sophie.

Posted by: Jake 14th October 2006, 10:27 PM

The 'Catch You' video was filmed in Venice for anybody interested....

Posted by: Oral Fixation 14th October 2006, 10:28 PM

Sophie Muller also directed, what will officially become in a few weeks, the biggest song of the decade (Shakira's Hips Don't Lie). So I guess the video will be fantastic.

I'll do a search online for the leaks. Meanwhile I'm posting my favourite SEB songs:

One of my favourite artists, I can't wait for her to come back. It's been way too long without her.

I also heard the 'Catch You' demo and it's really wet my appetite for the comeback, I've waited so long for this and it's nearing. dance.gif

Posted by: Oral Fixation 14th October 2006, 10:32 PM

I've always thought of SEB as the only popstar in the industry who could very easily be just as successful as a supermodel. She has that look about her; she's naturally beautiful.

Posted by: Chartmaster 14th October 2006, 10:33 PM

I loved her last two albums, great singer, will be good to hear new stuff from her.

Posted by: Aly 14th October 2006, 10:34 PM

She is one of the most talented and original figures in the business, I hope she fares well this time around.

Posted by: Scotty. 14th October 2006, 10:36 PM

I've always liked her actually biggrin.gif

She says she'll have a new record out by the end of the year, so December time maybe? I predict the week before or after Christmas.

Actually when her band theaudience split up, she modelled for a while to keep things going, then she got Groovejet and the rest is history. She's also the face of Monsoon at the mo. I totally agree!

Shes great wub.gif she deserves her own forum imo

Her albums so need to be talked about.

Well, I like her cos she's a very unique talent. Not only in style and image, but in her vocal style and lyrics too. And she makes great pop.

She's one of a kind. thumbup.gif

i find sophie average alot of her singles sounded exactly the same

Posted by: Oral Fixation 15th October 2006, 03:11 AM

I find her glamorous, especially when you compare her to tarts like Lily Allen. It's like she's sophisticated yet tongue-in-cheek, and it showed in her classy-yet-cheesy music.

Posted by: Red Blooded Man 15th October 2006, 09:14 AM

I quite a couple of Sophie songs like Murder on the dancefloor, and get over you but Mixed up world really lets her down...

Posted by: Ozmead 15th October 2006, 11:24 AM

Her vocals can sometimes grate on me but I own her 2 albums and they are great. And surprisngly, I much pefure her second album! She is something of a "female pet shop boy" I think

Posted by: burning up! 15th October 2006, 11:40 AM

finally someone that likes the second album! me too! mixed up world was great! very underrated

Posted by: Aly 15th October 2006, 11:43 AM

I loved both albums, the second was less commercial so I can kinda see why it didn't fare aswell.

My favourite Sophie song is 'Take Me Home', which is probably in my top 5 songs ever. wub.gif

What on earth do you mean 'a product'?!

She writes all her own material, and worked hard to get where she is all by herself.

........ so she manages herself, markets herself, produces herself, plays and directs the music by herself..

she is/was c**p.

Posted by: Aly 15th October 2006, 07:42 PM

Well obviously not, but she's still far from a 'product'.

She was the lead singer of an indie band in the 90's, and she worked damn hard to get her own success after that.

ill give you that much, she has put more into herself then many other pop products, but she is a product, and one that i personally cant abide... there are many far better female artistes who really do deserve better recognition... but hey, they havnt sold out, towing the 'pop' line in order to make money at the expense of their true vocation musically.... i wonder if mss bextors indie band had taken off, wether she would ever have considered cheesy pop.... i bet not! lol.

Posted by: Davidyay 15th October 2006, 08:50 PM

Actually Sophie writes the melodies as well as lyrics for her songs.

And the only songs I'd say are even remotely cheesy are Murder On The Dancefloor and Take Me Home.

Her other material is pop but it's got indie and dance influences in it. Expecially in her 2nd album. Pop music shouldn't be for people who just wanna see silly dances and crappy lyrics, where Sophie comes in & rightly so.

She doesn't market herself as a $l*t & does havea lot of input into who she is including the material she writes.

Posted by: Flatcap 16th October 2006, 02:54 AM

Murder On The Dance Floor was her best release in my opinion. That video (I think you posted it, I'll watch it at a more reasonable hour as it is nearly quarter past 4 in the morning here in the UK) was so funny. laugh.gif

I don't think 'Take Me Home' is cheesy.

Maybe I would say 'Music Gets The Best Of Me' is, but again that's similar to 'Murder On The Dancefloor'.

Anyone who says she's cheesy clearly doesn't know the first thing about her, as if they heard her albums they would see how diverse and talented she is. And they're probably basing their opinion on 'Murder On The Dancefloor'.

Posted by: mushymanrob 16th October 2006, 06:55 AM

i havnt heard her albums, as i detest the singles released its hardly likely that ill buy the album!

the only thing with her name on it that was any good was with spiller on 'groovejet (if this aint love)' which was a superb track. but she had sweet fa to do with that really, she was just the singer.

"I'm in Heaven, show me Heaven, so much Heaven" is cheese on toast dear. tongue.gif

She had to do something to follow up a #1 single and Graham Coxon wrote with her on her first album - would he do cheesy? theaudience weren't very popular at all. They only had about 1 or 2 hits and nobody bought into the album so I think going pop was a wise move especially as on her album she still has indie influences. And the new leaked song Colour Me In has got some indie vibes to it as well as some super synths.

Posted by: sim51 17th October 2006, 09:38 AM

She is great. Can't wait for some new material, I think the name of the new album 'Trip The Lights Fantastic' is worthy of a purchase alone. She's very artistic so I'm excited for her new image and style for the new album. Take Me Home was commercial. Shoot From The Hip was less commerical I just think she released the wrong singles from SFTH. Another Day should have been the comeback.

I think 'Love It Is Love', 'You Get Yours' or 'The Walls Keep Saying Your Name' definitely should have been singles from SFTH.

It's someone off of the Popjustice Forums that set up the label specifically to press all those fabulous 2000s to early 2010s Pop records we all love. I hope it's a big success for them as I'd love Girls Aloud's catalogue to be pressed too sometime in the future!

Yeah. I assume they might have printed less copies of Make A Scene since... well it was a flop and there's probably less demand for it compared to Read My Lips.

Young Blood, Runaway Daydreamer. Love Is A Camera and Wild Forever are all incredible songs.

This is what Plastic Pop said about it in October:

Apparently because I do my own distribution, I’m not chart eligible. I tried. Whole thing is a racket haha

It seems he's looked into it and has managed to make it work?

Nicola Roberts - Cinderella's Eyes didn't show up in the 4th February physical chart after her CD release, but I suppose it's possible that she sold less than was required to make the Top 100 of that chart? Unfortunately we didn't see any Top 200 mids that week so we don't know if it made an appearance early on in the week.

Yes, I heard that too since they're self-distributed. Though their Twitter account mentions that they're using a new distributor for this release, so maybe that's why it's chart eligible?

I imagine it was a conscious decision to go with a new distributor with the Make a Scene release because it has lower interest than a lot of their other releases, so they'd have less of a mess to clean up if the distributor screwed up.

Woo for the 1 copy on Sunday cheer.gif I think the result is fairly good, considering the fact it's her least known album and Plastic Pop REcords is still very small. Also imagine he sells quite a few international copies that won't count towards the charts.

The tracklist of all the re-issues is on their Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/plasticpoprecs/. Every release will have some bonus tracks.

Those track lists for the reissued CDs are slightly disappointing. No remixes and mainly just the B sides but better than nothing I guess.

I’m sure she will/is. I’m pretty sure she’s currently recording an album and that she mentioned it as a trilogy type thing.

We’ve had two already.

Posted by: Red Blooded Man 17th February 2022, 10:18 PM

As much as I like the "Young Blood" sound, I wish she would dabble in dance/EDM occasionally as well.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 17th February 2022, 11:00 PM

We've had two (arguably three) albums now of folky MOR, much as I've enjoyed it it's about time for some electro disco bangers - which makes perfect sense as she's now the kìtchen disco Queen!

No Trip the light tracks is a choice.

Posted by: Qween 10th March 2022, 09:20 PM

She does seem to be changing it up a bit each show. Isn’t she using a “wheel of fortune” style thing where she picks half a dozen (or so) songs at random. It just so happens most of the good stuff hasn’t come up yet.

Posted by: Bustin Jieber 29th March 2022, 10:46 PM

Seeing her at the Palladium tomorrow! Very excited, will be a fun way to break up the week.

7:30 or 8:30? I though I saw it in an instagram post from her.

If it’s not 9pm start she’s been letting people know on social media.

I went to the Manchester gig on Friday, she’s fab and all. Just came away really underwhelmed by all the covers, I could imagine most of the audience wouldn’t be able to name one of her albums.

Posted by: Qween 30th March 2022, 07:28 AM

Yes she started at 9 on Saturday in Glasgow. Holiday Sidewinder was on from about 8 to 8.30.

She randomly appeared in Neighbours on Monday, playing herself in an episode based in London. For about 30 seconds, with a reference to the 'dancefloor' and mentioned her kids.

Wait, there is a new track?

Posted by: Paradise Lost 30th March 2022, 10:21 PM

Isn't Hypnotised from an earlier album?

Trip The Light Fantastic maybe?

Posted by: Paradise Lost 30th March 2022, 10:23 PM

Nope, I think I'm wrong. I got confused.

Supersonic is from Trip The Light Fantastic and Synchronised is from Make A Scene.

I swear I've heard that song title before though.

Posted by: Bustin Jieber 30th March 2022, 11:27 PM

I think this new track is a collaboration with an unknown artist for their song, a bit like 'Hummingbird' was.

She described it as "ABBA on crack" (laugh.gif) before she performed it and that sounds about right! It's quite high energy, high camp disco with a bombastic chorus. Sounded promising!

Thoroughly enjoyed myself tonight, she is an absolute babe and I will love her forever <3

Could somebody stick the hyphen in her surname in the thread title please?

Anyway, really happy for her! It's absolutely astounding that this track is back at its peak after 22 years. Completely unprecedented. She's kept herself ticking over in the limelight one way or another for the last two decades but it's so lovely to see her back high in the chart. This song is such a gem.

Nice to see Never Let Me Down up to stream, I used to love that. Not sure I've ever heard the Extended Album version before now, has that been released physically before?

Does anyone know if Murder on the Dancefloor is on US radio? Even if it is still far in the future: If Murder were to become a radio hit in the US, Crying At The Discotheque should be her next single there. Crying is Sophie's seventh most successful song in the UK without ever reaching the top 100, so it definitely has potential. Besides, hardly anyone in the USA knows the original Crying anyway and everyone would think it was another catchy song from Sohpie.

Yes, it was played almost 196 times on pop stations last week apparently (up from 20 times the week before), which would put it around #52 on the pop airplay chart.

Read My Lips has been on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart for four weeks now, but what does it mean exactly? Is RML only charted there because of the streams for MOTD and do people actually stream/buy the whole album?

I don't understand something about the Hot 100 either: MOTD is no 57 in the Hot 100 this week, but the song is better placed in all genre charts: streaming no 38, digital no 17 and pop airplay no 30. So if MOTD is doing well on streaming and radio, why is it on the Hot 100 just at no 57?

Oh come onnnn, it contains such gold one-liners like...

"I used to change my style like I changed my mind, I tried to change a tyre but I'm not that way inclined"

and

"Tried to change my figure, my diet too - I'll still change my underwear if that's OK with you"

Just listening now and yep that whole second verse is awful - which I could forgive in an iconic Des'Ree kinda way but it's just all kind of naff? The production isn't great and the delivery sounds pretty half arsed too. Definitely her worst single for me.

(although saying that I'm flicking through the album and her second one really was pretty dire, a real come down after her debut)

Pop airplay is only a subset of overall airplay so it's presumably nowhere near #30 on radio overall. Also there are quite a few songs that have huge streams but barely any radio whereas most songs with high radio also have at least decent streams.

Down 1 place to #8 in Australia this week.

New PNAU Remix out today

Posted by: Simon. 9th February 2024, 12:14 PM

Track 1 on hot hits Uk now although a bit late.

Posted by: Roba. 9th February 2024, 12:38 PM

A shame 'Stick Season' is just too damn big otherwise it could've had some time on top but nonetheless it's done incredibly well.

1 week until the MOTD physicals are released. Why were they waiting that long to release the physicals?

Probably took this long to manufacture.

Love this. It retains so much of the original track, but makes it a bit fresh and different from the one I've heard at least a million times.

Agreed, it’s quite nice.

Sweet mother of Jesus! 🤯

It's a shame she's got this, the BAFTA performance and physicals the week it (supposedly) goes to ACR! Talk about bad timing.

Posted by: Padamic Tension 12th February 2024, 09:23 PM

With a bit of luck (although unlikely) she will avoid ACR for these to have a real benefit.
They should release a few remixes to help it with streaming that might help it avoid ACR for a little bit longer.

Exactly my thoughts just from looking at the thumbnail. laugh.gif

Good for her, she really deserves it, she has more than paid her dues since her last really successful stint over 20 years ago.

Love the PNAU remix too, great job!

Posted by: One_For_Sorrow 15th February 2024, 05:52 AM

That was a nice performance. Do we know if it’s had any impact in the US? Streaming wise as I doubt iTunes dose much over in the US either.

Great to see the major success SEB is having….she looks incredible too, all the years of her trying new sounds and gigging has paid off.

Posted by: Brer 15th February 2024, 04:37 PM

I'm not sure how you can credit 'trying new sounds' when the song that's blown up is literally just the song that was already her biggest hit kink.gif

Just realised murder on the dancefloor has now spent more weeks in the top 10 than it did first time around.

Posted by: Roba. 17th February 2024, 12:52 AM

Matches 'Moves Like Jagger' for weeks at 2 (with the exception that was consecutive weeks). Hope it sticks around a bit longer even on ACR which should be likely!

Hyped for her live lounge performance *.*

Me too. I’m so keen to see what she performs alongside MOTD.

Posted by: pippa 18th February 2024, 06:58 PM

Number 15 on first look this week.
I think Sophie can make a slight recovery by the end of the week.

Posted by: lewistgreen 19th February 2024, 07:28 PM

Here's that BAFTAs performance

Posted by: lewistgreen 20th February 2024, 08:21 PM

Live Lounge from today including a cover of The Last Dinner Party

Posted by: ThePensmith 21st February 2024, 06:48 AM

Honestly? The continuing success that Sophie's experiencing from this? Nothing short of joyful. Loved her Live Lounge set and her performance at the BAFTAs and on Jimmy Kimmel last week.

Posted by: J00prstar 21st February 2024, 09:58 AM

I'm still pulling for it to become a sleeper hit in the US

Posted by: Lukuzz 21st February 2024, 07:43 PM

She suits Nothing Matters so well!

Posted by: gooddelta 21st February 2024, 08:55 PM

It feels like something she would have performed with Theaudience!
