The 2024 UEFA Champions League, the 69th season of Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 32nd season since it was renamed from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League. The final will be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England, on 1 June 2024. The 1st Round Qualifier draw was held last week.
Preliminary Quakifying Round:
Semi-finals 27/6/23
Atlčtic Club d'Escaldes (Andorra) vs Budućnost Podgorica (Montenegro)
Tre Penne (San Marino) vs Breiđablik(Iceland)
Final 30/6/23
The winners of this tournament then go through to the 1st Qualifying Round on the 12/7/23 where the champions of the 29 countries in UEFA coefficients 16-51 enter the tournament. (This excludes Leicenstein as their teams play in the Swiss football pyramid and Russia who are banned from UEFA competitions following the war in Ukraine. This means the Serbian champions will automatically qualify for the group stages this year.)
Half-time in the Final of the preliminary round (the idea of there being a 'final' when there are 75 teams yet to enter the competition feels slightly bizarre!), Breiđablik of Iceland are beating Budućnost Podgorica 4-0 so it's looking like they'll be the ones to progress and play Shamrock Rovers, where they'll likely bow out as well.
I kinda assumed a Montenegrin team would be decent

So we will be into the 3rd round next week with big teams joining including 1988 winners PSV Eindhoven, 1993 winners Marseille and Rangers.
After entering the competition in June Icelandic champions Breidablik finally bow out after 3 2 legs matches against Danish champions Copenhagen!
There was also quite the game between Belarusian Champs BATE and Cypriot side Aris Limmasol who won 5-11 on aeg!!
Let's not forget the Faroese team still alive.
It's not quite the Champions League but I went to the Europa Conference League qualifier between Bohemians 1905 & Bodř/Glimt last night.
It was a great atmosphere, even with the home team losing and a decent match.
Many thanks steve201 for updating us with the results.

Sporting Braga (Portugal) 3 Backa Topola (Serbia) 0
So the fairytale goes on for another match for the champions of the Faroe Islands as they get an 86th minute winner against Norwegian champions Molde. I would fully expect Molde to win at home but who knows, it’s unprecedented for a team from such a small European coefficient to go this far into the qualifiers. They surely couldn’t, could they? They are guaranteed at least 6 more games in the Europa conference even if they are defeated next week.
Also the Polish champions are continuing their dramatic rise from a third division minnow to a European powerhouse with their win against Aris Limmosol who are not exactly powerhouses themselves.
Also the Trump tie of the round has seen Panithanikos take a slim 1-0 win into the 2nd leg against 1993 champions Marseille.

So the dream did end for the Faroese champions as they were beat 2-0 by Molde and fall into the conference league groups. Some achievement for them though!
Also the game of the round was at Panathiniakos in a tense penalties victory over 1993 champions Marseille.

The biggest shock of the playoffs were Royal Antwerp getting into the groups for me!

Manchester City getting the easiest group. Even when they're the defending champions some things never change! A tricky group for us having Bayern, Copenhagen & Galatasaray. Tough group for Newcastle.
Celtic have a chance with that group, hard group for United but it makes a change!
Haud yer wheesht 🙄 United get a fair mix of challenge from the groups and have more often than not lately ended in tougher groups
Anyway, idk who city have paid off to get the easiest group every single year. Sooner they actually get punished for their cheating the better.
Reckon the entire city is gonna be fighting for Real tickets!
Lol it looks like Fergie himself did the draw 🤣
Nice late equaliser for Red Star tonight!!
Great performance from Newcastle, puts them in a good positon to qualify now. Very much had the feels of a one off type of performance though in the CL.
I think Newcastle have done well and could qualify despite being a tough group! Although PSG aren’t the same beast as previous years as their transfer strategy has been bringing in more young French talent to win over the Parisian crowd.
Goalkeeper David Raya is expected to remain in goal for Arsenal's Champions League game against Sevilla at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Tuesday.
The Gunners lost to Lens in their previous Group B fixture.
Raya has been preferred to last season's first-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in recent weeks.
However the Spaniard was at fault for Mykhailo Mudryk's goal in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
Gabriel Jesus scored a goal and grabbed an assist to help Arsenal get back to winning ways in the Champions League with victory at Sevilla.
After losing 2-1 to Lens in their previous European outing, the Gunners came through a difficult test against the seven-time Europa League winners.
Gabriel Martinelli got the visitors off and running by marking his Champions League debut with a goal, racing on to Jesus' brilliant ball and rounding the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time.
Pretty harsh red card that for Rashford!
Disaster for United in Copenhagen! 4-3 in the 95th min!
Didn't watch the game but I'd already resigned myself to bring out of the comp after the Galatasaray result so meh. Might not even be joining yous on Thursdays now we'll be out altogether!
I feel so bad for Hojlund. Not a single goal in the prem yet 5 in Europe (the quickest ever United player to hit 5) and all 5 of them coming in defeats!
Re the Rashy red that's a red card all day long in my book. Looks like he's back to his usual self having one amazing season followed by an absolute stinker yet again.
Would help if he stayed away from clubs after defeats in the derby!
Yeh Hojlund looks a decent player great movement and all!
That story was way overblown tbf, if he's not allowed to go out partying after a defeat that's a lot of weekends he'll be staying in this season
Lol, I’m a fan of Rashford, seems a good guy so I don’t see a problem personally!
That PSG Newcastle match is exactly why I’m enjoying the European competitions less and less every year.
The handball rule in UEFA competitions is a joke and I can’t believe they’ve kept it for 4 years now. Despite the hate the refereeing gets in the Prem, I’d honestly take it any day over that in the European competitions.
I’d much rather Premier League refs as they take into account silly reflections off the chest etc which is the correct common sense approach.
United scoring 9 away goals but only having 1 point is pretty mad stat. No idea what Onana was thinking for that 2nd goal.
Think Utd can beat Bayern at home though as can see them playing a weakened team and Utd know they have to win.
Well whatever happens this has to be the wildest and most entertaining group stage by any team ever.
Even if we beat Bayern which we won't I can't see the other game being a draw.
What has to happen in the other game for United to go through just a draw of any sort?
Yes.
The stars would have to align a lot for Utd to go through, anything is possible though. I don't even think heading in to the Europa League would be the worst thing in the world either. As much as I'd rather be in the Champions League, there are benefits to it to give squad players minutes and bed in younger players in a lower pressure environment (Mainoo, Garnacho). Only thing you would say, is that group Utd got drawn in is one you'd have expected to qualify from when the draw was made.
Bayern only drew with Copenhagen so they could easily get an atmosphere at OT and beat a squad Bayern side. And they other game will be chaotic!
Last 16 Draw:
FC Porto v Arsenal
Napoli v Barcelona
PSG v Real Sociedad
Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid
PSV v Borussia Dortmund
Lazio v Bayern Munich
FC Copenhagen v Manchester City
RB Leipzig v Real Madrid
Copenhagen have already knocked one Manchester team out, let's see if they can do the same with the other one!
FC Copenhagen must be one of the smallest teams in this stage in a while, what coefficient is the Danish league? NI teams usually get them in the qualifiers!
They entered in the Second Qualifying round - it's guaranteed that two teams that enter in that round make it into the Group Stage so that's not too much of a surprise, but a bit more so to see them make the Round of 16!
Managerial change at Napoli just before their Champions league tie .
https://www.tntsports.co.uk/football/serie-a/2023-2024/napoli-sack-walter-mazzarri-and-bring-in-francesco-calzona-two-days-before-barcelona-champions-leagu_sto10031022/story.shtml
PSG and Bayern are looking fairly set to be the first two teams through so far this evening!
The next two Round of 16 matches kick of in a couple of minutes! Everything still to play for in both games.
Arsenal through to their first quarter final since 2010 after beating Porto on penalties.
Kane coming back to haunt Arsenal in the QFs.
Madrid vs City once again.
Quarter-finals draw
Arsenal v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v Dortmund
Paris St-Germain v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Manchester City
Semi-finals draw
Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund v Paris St-Germain or Barcelona
Arsenal or Bayern Munich v Real Madrid or Manchester City
No away fans at Arsenal then..
https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsenal-championsleague-bayern-fans-banned-32361824
Certainly some clashes to look forward to in that set of fixtures!
Arsenal out. City out. Happy days!
And City too. Thank f*** there's no back to back treble.
England can kiss goodbye to that fifth champions league spot then, unlucky Spurs!
That Silva penalty might just be up there with one of the worst penalties I've ever seen in shootout. It was so bad.
It will be the first time since 2019-20 that no English sides made it to the semi finals, coincidentally both Thomas Tuchel and PSG were involved in the final that season which is something that could happen again.
Czechia have overtaken Scotland meaning Scotland will not have a guaranteed Group Stage Place in the 2025 Champions League.
England's hopes of securing a fifth Champions League spot are all but over.
With Italy clear at the top of Uefa's coefficient rankings, the second of the two available spots has been a battle between Germany and England.
Exits for four of the five remaining English clubs in European competitions this week contrasts with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich making the Champions League semi-finals and Bayer Leverkusen reaching the last four of the Europa League.
Dortmund reach the final for the first time since 2013.
Great to see Dortmund in the final again and stopping PSG as well!
It's the Jude Bellingham finale then.
Is there actually a flukier club than Madrid? Nope don't think so.
Well, early congratulations to Real Madrid for the La Decimoquinta, then. I don't really see any chances for Dortmund to beat Madrid like they did in 2013.
A Dortmund win would make it harder to 5 PL teams to qualify for the 2025-26 CL but otherwise it would be a more interesting result yes.
here for Jadon Sancho going from being exiled from the Man United squad to lifting the Champions League in the space of 6 months
Yeh Dortmund for me but Madrid rarely lose European Cup finals so will easily win!
