Following last night's shameful events what happened in Sofia. What do you believe needs to be done to stop racism in sport?

Posted by: dandy* 15th October 2019, 06:45 PM

The teams need to be kicked out of the contest they're in. People have to see a tangible negative result after their actions.

Posted by: Mack. 15th October 2019, 06:57 PM

I agree teams being kicked out of the competition, or a ban from the next tournament.

Posted by: Severin 19th October 2019, 05:15 PM

The problem with kicking teams out of a competition is that it is open to organised subterfuge. For example, I have a friend whose son was born, raised and lives in England but because his mother is German he supports Germany. He could in theory go to an England game and make a number of racist gestures or chants and easily pass for an England fan, even with a solid investigation carried out, and therefore get the team sanctioned or expelled. Rival supporters would potentially look to exploit this punishment and have sides instantly banned.

I know he is an extreme example and would be a minority case but arguably so are the racists, even if it is more widespread in other countries. We know these kind of individuals are capable of organised action and so a more measured approach is required.
It would also be harsh to have a team expelled for a handful of idiot scumbags who do not represent their national or club side.

Personally I feel it should be more complex. Teams that have a racism issue but take no action or insufficient steps to resolve the problem should initially be fined and given penalty points similar to a driving licence. Repeat infractions incur a points deduction and fines and ultimately expulsion. This gives them fair warning and time to take action on the root causes much like British football did beginning in the 80s. Out leagues are by no means perfect but they are vastly superior to most others.

Bristol City are investigating reports of racist language being used by their fans during Saturday's Championship game at Luton.

A Robins statement, following Luton's 3-0 win, said they "naturally condemn any form of abuse or racist language".

I largely agree with Severin. I’m not sure kicking them out is the answer as it doesn’t really solve the problem it just puts it in a different corner. There are some aspects of society that think this behaviour is acceptable, by sheer coincidence they unfortunately happen to be quite fond of football. Taking them out of football doesn’t stop them being racist. It doesn’t stop them racially abusing players from behind anonymous twitter accounts. It’s not the answer because it doesn’t solve the issue at hand in my opinion.

I’d really like to hear from Sterling, Rashford and any of the other hundreds upon hundreds of footballers of colour who are racially abused as to what they would like to see done and how they would like to see things tackled. They’re on the receiving end of it, any solution will only work if it shuts off all avenues of this vile abuse they have to handle daily and any solution needs to tackle the things that we don’t see as the majority group but are blindly obvious to the minority groups

Serie A has apologised after imagery of monkeys was used in artwork for an anti-racism campaign.

The league received heavy criticism from Italian clubs AC Milan and Roma as well as anti-discrimination organisations for the posters.

The Professional Footballers' Association has called for a government inquiry into racism in football after Chelsea's Premier League win at Tottenham was marred by alleged racist behaviour from the crowd.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play during the second half after Blues defender Antonio Rudiger complained of hearing monkey noises.

Tottenham have vowed to "take the strongest possible action" and said they will conduct "a thorough investigation".

Shortly after the stoppage, an announcement made over the public address system warned that "racist behaviour is interfering with the game".

Second and third addresses followed with the game heading towards its conclusion.

The PFA said: "We are disgusted and dismayed that once again, a Premier League fixture has been tainted by abuse from the stands towards players.

"It has become clear that football players are on the receiving end of the blatant racism that is currently rife in the UK, but they are not alone.

"The PFA stands beside every player who faces discrimination. We will continue to fight on their behalf to combat this issue for good.

"Football is part of the fabric of British society - with the huge global audience that English football attracts, we have a responsibility to lead the way with a zero-tolerance policy."

The PFA added that "all governing bodies" and "all football stakeholders" should work together to "confront, challenge and eradicate racist abuse in our stadiums and in our country".

It said: "The PFA calls for a government inquiry into racism within football and encourage the establishment of an All-Party Group at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport."

Spurs confirmed that they will be liaising with Chelsea and their players for their observations.

"Any form of racism is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our stadium," said Spurs in a statement.

"We take any such allegations extremely seriously and shall take the strongest possible action against any individual found to be behaving in such a way, including stadium bans."

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and Tottenham have confirmed that the game was stopped over a single incident of alleged racist behaviour.

Nacer Bouhanni has withdrawn from Scheldeprijs after receiving racist abuse on social media following an incident in a previous race in France.

Bouhanni was disqualified for dangerous conduct at the Cholet-Pays de la Loire after pushing Britain's Jake Stewart into the barriers on the final sprint.

He apologised but later received "hundreds" of abusive messages.

The UCI, cycling's governing body, said it "firmly condemned the racist attacks" aimed at Bouhanni.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 8th April 2021, 04:40 PM

Not good. Whilst the way Bouhanni behaved in that sprint was incredibly dangerous and should be penalised, that has absolutely nothing to do with his race and the fact that people are treating him the way they did because of that is genuinely disgraceful. It feels almost a case of 'we don't think he was punished well enough so as a response we're using the fact he's not white to torment him'.

So I don't know whether anyone listens to the Guardian Football Weekly, but they did a podcast with John Barnes last week. There were some good points raised by John (and some stuff that was a bit wide off the mark too). Anyway, his point was that by us historically going back 10-15 years and vilifying and cancelling people for making these comments, it makes authorities look like they are stamping down on racism. They're not really.. I don't really see what purpose it serves. People change, people mature - the key to it all is education, challenging people and learning. It's pretty clear there is a problem in cricket that is engrained in the culture, just like I'm sure there will have been in football back in the 80s. I do think people owning up to these comments and saying "Yes I made these, but I am not proud" is at step to going at least somewhere though.

Charges have been brought against "a number of individuals" by English cricket's governing body in relation to allegations of racism at Yorkshire.

The accused, who have not been named, could be banned or fined by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Yorkshire itself has also been charged with breaching the anti-racism rules.

Details of abuse first surfaced in September 2020 when former player Azeem Rafiq said discrimination left him feeling suicidal.

"In matters of this nature, our normal practice is not to identify individuals charged at this stage," said the ECB.

Yorkshire said the "allegations relate to charges as far back as 2004 up until 2021".

In a statement, the County added: "The club will need the cooperation of those in position during this time in order to fully consider and respond to the matters raised."

Lewis Hamilton has said "archaic mindsets need to change" and have no place in Formula 1 after three-time world champion Nelson Piquet used racially abusive language about him.

The 69-year-old Brazilian, who won the world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987, used a racially offensive term to refer to Hamilton in a podcast.

Piquet has been condemned by Formula 1, Hamilton's Mercedes team and the FIA.

"It's more than language," said seven-time world champion Hamilton.

"These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport. I've been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life.

"There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action."

Piquet was discussing the accident between Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on the first lap of last year's British Grand Prix.

He described the incident as "a joke", said Hamilton had been "lucky" only Verstappen crashed, and used a swear word in expressing his opinion that Hamilton had made a mistake.

Former Yorkshire head coach Andrew Gale will not engage with the England and Wales Cricket Board's disciplinary process after being charged following racism allegations at the club.

The 38-year-old denied all allegations in a statement on Wednesday.

"I was very disappointed when Azeem's original allegations were first brought to my attention," Gale said in his first statement since being dismissed by the club.

Vaughan has "completely and categorically" denied the allegation - and did so again when giving evidence for the first time in the hearing on Friday.

The ECB also recommended a combination of fines, suspensions, reprimands and education courses for former England bowlers Tim Bresnan and Matthew Hoggard, former Yorkshire captain and coach Andrew Gale, former Scotland bowler John Blain and former Yorkshire all-rounder Richard Pyrah.

All five did not appear before the independent CDC panel in March after withdrawing from the process and also did not provide written submissions for this hearing in London on Wednesday.

CDC panel chair Tim O'Gorman said a decision on sanctions for the six former players will not be made for "several weeks".

Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat by Valencia was overshadowed by alleged racist abuse from the stands directed at Vinícius Júnior, who was later sent off, with Carlo Ancelotti insisting afterwards that the game should have been abandoned.

The match was halted for 10 minutes in the second half as Vinícius pointed out fans to the referee who he said had racially abused him. The Brazilian carried on playing but was sent off a few minutes later after he became involved in a brawl with Valencia players.

“I don’t want to talk about football today, there is no meaning in talking about football today,” said Real manager Ancelotti afterwards. “What we saw today is unacceptable. An entire stadium chanting racist slurs, I told the referee that he should have stopped the match.”

Police are investigating "racist comments" directed towards Everton's Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana.

The 22-year-old shared a screenshot of a racist message he received after Sunday's 4-0 loss at Aston Villa.

Everton said that "such abuse is vile" and Merseyside Police added "we condemn such behaviour in the strongest terms."

"It is appalling to think that anyone would use an online platform to target anyone with abuse based on their race," said a Merseyside Police spokesperson.

"Merseyside Police can confirm an investigation is under way after it was reported racist comments were made on social media directed towards an Everton player."We take all reports of hate crime extremely seriously, and I would like to remind social media users that any belief that they can maintain anonymity online to commit offences is misplaced.

Players do not think the football authorities are doing enough to effectively tackle racism in the game, says Professional Footballers' Association chair Omar Beckles.

Beckles says members do not believe there are "real, consistent and significant consequences" for racism.

AC Milan's Mike Maignan and Coventry's Kasey Palmer both suffered alleged racist abuse during games on Saturday.

"Responsibility for what happens next lies with the authorities," he said.

"Our members want to see real, consistent and significant consequences for racist abuse, both for the individuals who are responsible and for clubs who fail to get a grip of the issue within their stadiums.

Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams scored in the 3-1 La Liga defeat at Atletico Madrid after accusing a section of home fans of racially abusing him.

The Spain winger asked referee Juan Martinez to stop the match midway through the first half at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.

The game was paused to make an announcement to the crowd, and Atletico players Antoine Griezmann and Jose Maria Gimenez appeared to urge their fans to stop the chanting before play resumed.

"I have gone to take a corner and I have heard monkey sounds," 21-year-old Williams told DAZN.

"There are stupid people everywhere, but nothing happens. We have to keep working.

"I hope this changes little by little because in the end we are fighting internally and externally against this."

Williams was booed by some fans throughout, which intensified when the match was stopped and after he equalised just before half-time.
