Thanks for the points for Cruz so far, I see it appearing in quite a few votes, although usually in the low points.

They really remind me of bands like The View or Arctic Monkeys (but with less clever lyrics), so their style of music feels quite nostalgic to me.

Hope my favourite can hang onto the top 10! Thought Frost* would be a lot higher!

Ooops sorry I missed the start of this, I was out for a meal with the famalam and then went for a run on the treadmill as soon as I got home but here for the rest of it!

Catching up to find myself having been midweek #1 although quite understandably with nearly 75% of my points coming from only 3 people, thanks very much to Chez, Rollo and uhsting for the trio of gold medals + Dobbo for further double digit pointage and Jim and Nate for my other points so far! (and now knocked off #1 after the triple snub in the latest batch of votes but I had no delusions it was going to last much longer anyway )

I was definitely going for standing out here but had no idea if it'd be standing out in a good way for anyone with it being a bit on the harsh side so am glad that risk seems to be paying off decently so far *.* I actually found this song from the same YouTube video where I found my BJSC 161 entry (Re-TROS), comprising 100 random songs submitted by the YouTuber Lyzette G's audience I don't often pay much attention to lyrics when I listen to songs for the first time (if ever) but I found the lyrics of 'The Law Of Asbestos' pretty immediately gut punching. And the headbanging black metal instrumental helped too. x

I see all of my top 4 are unmasked already, and great to see them all in the top 10 so far - doing a 20 swap with Chez oh my an excellent bit of modern jazz there. I Googled Nightbus and saw an article describing their sound as like The xx remixing Joy Division so like of course that's a fave for me. And Kath herself unveiled as the person who stole Winter from me gah! (Although I'm now kind of glad my hand was forced to send something a bit more out there so people could hear that as well as 'the lonely girl' which is still a brilliant spoken word/shoegaze blend, I half expected that to get my 20 by default so was pleasantly surprised there were 2 songs I liked even more). Then Dobbo's entry was a banger as well and a well deserved winner at this stage, I think there's a good chance either that or Surren Tweek will end up on top.

Was wrong about Rich being the one who sent Winter but still really enjoyed your actual entry too (definitely hearing the Arctic Monkeys vibes) so a shame that one isn't doing better so far. Frost* being Rollo was fairly predictable but a good prog rock pick. Always happy to hear more Drab Majesty even though I kind of feel they're a bit too well known on here for Unknown Pleasures at this point (though I hadn't heard this song before tbf). Doctor Blind delivering one of the best music videos of all tarm *.* (the song was good too). And finally from my votes that have been unveiled already, the music video also slightly overshadowed the song for Jim's entry but again still managed to sneak in, thought that one might have been Jade's entry.

I think the Lil Ugly Mane song would probably be a grower for me so apols if it missed out for me due to my bad time management meaning I couldn't fit in a second listen. Argh Cody, stop being so good at this!! I naturally can't complain at my 15 winning, the fact it was the very first track and stuck with me through the listenthrough (and many others) for that long says a lot!

Ooft, I'm very pleased to do that well, but missing the top 10 by one point when I was there for the whole reveal does sting just a tad I'm very pleased those that did like this seemed to like it a lot though, especially in a packed edition like this, it's a wonderful building track and I'm glad I remembered it's existence in time for this x

Very pleased to see my top 3 all in the top 10 and most of my votes did pretty decently, though Truly Being Alive deserved a bit higher than that </3

I'm really glad the entry found a couple of avid fans despite not getting a lot of votes. 24th is not too shabby but I think I will keep on sending some experiment shit to this contest because that's what the contest is for (or at least defined by me anyway )

Would we call an unknown cover version of a Top 30 single from 24 years ago cheap? Perhaps on this forum we would but let's be honest here only a handful of people would've clocked it and known who it was. I certainly had no clue and if it was an issue then it should've been vetoed. However, as many of us will have experience of on this site, vetting a song contest for every entry is difficult and things do slip through the cracks before anyone says "it's not in the spirit of the contest". It was a discovery for me!

Congratulations on winning! I did think it may be the winner when it was decent and also first in the listings - for some reason I think UP always favours songs that are in the first part of the draw.

Very happy with third, especially as I was unsure what to send and left everything very last minute. I desperately need to find some new songs this year now as I'm raiding last year for both this and BJSC at the moment.

Not a single point from the last 7 voters but still only falling from 5th to 7th *.* very happy with that and consider me shocked to have finished a fair bit higher than Winter eep! I did confirm Ashenspire first but then felt like wimping out and tried switching to Winter as a 'safer' option haha (and then didn't really have time to look for another entry after that was blocked so just went back to my original choice). I honestly thought that one might be a contender to win so 17th feels a bit disappointing but still not too awful I guess, thanks Kath for blocking me from another anonymous midtable result I suppose!

I think Surren Tweek is probably the one I'd have predicted to win going into the results if I made a prediction but not sure I saw it having such a huge lead - can't say it's undeserved though as it was in my top 5 so a fab winner, Cody winning every other edition of Unknown Pleasures of late! I voted for 4 of the top 5 and the other one was still among my commiserations that'll be added to my 2024 playlist anyway so all good stuff up there. Also happy to see Frost* in the top 10 although oh nooo that my top 2 ended up in 11th and 12th after both being in the top 10 for much of the results oops! Voted for Las Eras and Drab Majesty too so a few of my faves all lining up just outside the top 10 there but glad they all passed 100 points at least.

Almost all of my votes finished in the top half so not a lot to complain about, the one really disappointing underperformance aside from Winter is CRUZ (though still a few more songs I had as commiserations that were in the bottom half as well).

Thanks for the hosting Kath, great edition both quality and presentation wise hopefully we don't have to wait until 2025 for the next one

nah don't apologize when you have nothing to apologize for. I personally didn't care either way whether or not it was cheap, I just got caught off-guard by a muse cover showing up in the contest. people can have their opinions but imo if it's allowed by the mods then it's fair game.

(I also am pretty sure I have never heard the original Muse song - it only has 40 million streams on Spotify, only the third highest on that album, certainly nowhere near being one of their most well-known songs)

Covers in UP are fine as long as they're obscure, which this seems to be and it is hardly Muse's most well known song. I personally found this one stayed too close to the original for me to enjoy it as much, but that's subjective and nothing to be sorry about!

Can't say any better than one's 20 winning, excellent song Cody and well done, great result all around. Though Infected Rain deserved way better than what they got, that's far too low </3

As for myself, you see I was convinced I was on to a flop, I sent the best Mongolian throat singing ridiculousness I could find on impulse to get in on the Otyken coattails and it somehow really paid out some dividends, I thought it would be hella divisive. Thank you to everyone for somehow getting it into the top 10, very pleased with that.

'Muscle Museum' was really quite a nice surprise as I went along in the listenthrough, I love the original, the best off of Muse's first album and it's an inventive choice of cover, which got it the points.

did get a bit of entry envy I must admit, but I always fall short of winning with my breakcore hits, anyway more breakcore soon when I get back to typecasting myself

okay it’s been a bit since the full results were posted so…

Honestly…….. I wasn’t expecting this to be anywhere close to a win, nor was I really aiming for it as I was extremely stumped for the past few days of confirmations being open. I got inspired by some breakcore (my mind went to Nyteout rather than Sewerslvt) and one YouTube trawl and Dead By Daylight session later I ran into this I’m really shocked that y’all loved it so much but also really please thanks so much for the votes!

Great to see most of my top 5 make it pretty high (other than MOTHICA, thought that one was robbed </3), props to Frank for the Eli Mich discovery, that was one of the highlights of the entire contest and definitely woke me up during the session *,*

Also Wardy, people can get a bit heated on listenthroughs, and then others sometimes join in and it looks like a pile on, but ultimately, clearly the Muse cover was a decent discovery for numerous people as it finished in a respectable position. I wasn't there so don't know exactly how much criticism it got exactly but whatever 3 or 4 people might say on a listenthrough won't necessarily represent what the other 30 odd people may think of it. A cover of a non top 20 hit from nearly 25 years ago - albeit by a successful band - is not really as cheap as it's made out to be imo. Club Bizarre and BJSC both had far cheaper stuff this month.

I'm sorry Wardy for the harsh comments, I was blunt, but I didn't intend to make you feel bad at all. It was one of those cases when you think just because you (and your friends/age group at home) know something very well then everyone will know it, not taking into account that I'm older than most of the people in these contests and live(d) in a different country with a different music scene. I couldn't list more than 5 Muse songs, but I've heard 'Muscle Museum' loads of times - but I get that it is not as 'evergreen' for the audience as it is in my head.


Congrats Cody, great entry again! Nearly got my 20 too, switched my top 2 in the last second (not that 'Fallen Angel' needed 5 more points, hehe).

I'm very happy with 8th, I'm glad that a couple of you enjoyed 'You Were Different'!

I hoped 'In a Moment Divine' would have connected with more people but I'm happy I chose a song I love. BJSC has fried my brain a little with these contests. *.*

Kind of surprised to have given Mohini Dey more than a quarter of its points, but a brilliant entry nonetheless. I'd have liked to see CRUZ higher too even if I only gave it 1 point.

Many congrats Cody, what an incredible piece of music. I remember listening to the playlist for the first time and thinking "so track 1, this is gonna be tough to beat" and wasn't it ever! Certainly didn't expect my own entry to be the one that pushed it the closest however (albeit not all that close in the end ) shocked and delighted that so many of you enjoyed this piece I've had tucked away on my potentials for a few years now. But even I will say I preferred the winning song to my own!

Sharing the top 3 with my 2 faves (and my entire top 5 finishing in the top 10), results couldn't have gone much better thanks to Kath for running!
