You have all been listening to the 34 songs available in this edition, the votes are now in and eventually counted(!)...
Results at 8pm this very evening.

In the meantime, feel free to speculate over who will win, who will finish last etc if you so desire.
If you have forgotten the full list of songs, here is the track list again:

Good luck all. See you later.

D*

∆ will win etc. And hopefully too.

Posted by: 152chris 18th February 2012, 04:54 PM

Got a feeling that Fitzpleasure isn't actually going to win. Corvette Cassette maybe? Or Bones.

Posted by: Ljósið 18th February 2012, 04:55 PM

There's no way anything other than Fitzpleasure is going to win.

Posted by: JohnMK 18th February 2012, 05:42 PM

I had a feeling that was the track people tipped for victory, can't say I enjoyed it but its far from the worst.

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 05:50 PM

You all sound so confident! But will Fitzpleasure win it? We've already had one shock victor in BJSC this month, maybe we'll get another here? Or maybe I'm double double bluffing! biggrin.gif

By the way, I'm doing the results in order of receipt to be fair to all concerned (and it was easier for me tbh!!!).

Posted by: SKOB 18th February 2012, 05:51 PM

S.Ex as Janet would say

Posted by: Harve 18th February 2012, 06:01 PM

Tbqh, my favourite entry is my own (which is rare!). I'd really like it to finish in the top 5 but I reckon it's been lost in the crowd. Bleh.

Well if even you think it's been lost in the crowd then it can't have been that remarkable!

I think we'll be in for a bit of a shock tbh.

Posted by: Hitstastic 18th February 2012, 06:17 PM

The track I'd like to see win is listed amongst the second list of entries.

Posted by: Grebo 18th February 2012, 06:24 PM

Oh and the name is not actually "∆" anymore, it is Alt-J.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 06:35 PM

I love my song but I reckon it will give me my worst ever finish and I'll then curse Dandy* for not starting it a little bit later when I would've sent something else instead.

There was only one song I really disliked, but I think it'll do quite well.

Posted by: Tom Titanium Kay 18th February 2012, 06:36 PM

I'm thinking it's Covette Cassette's to lose. I will be bringing up the rear as per usual kink.gif

Most people predicted Foxes at least a Top 10 position. Hardly a shock victory.

Posted by: Mart!n 18th February 2012, 06:46 PM

I'm waiting for my slow start at the bottom, by the end of the contest I end up top 3 smoke.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 18th February 2012, 06:46 PM

I'm quietly confident in my own entry, I don't think I'll be bottom five again. Famous last words I know.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ 18th February 2012, 06:49 PM

I don't particularly like mine so I'm expecting the worst! 'Fitzpleasure' will probably win. It has at least 60 points already!

Before I begin, I am aware that I've messed up the band names on a few of the scores - they do get rectified soon though so I hope you'll be forgiving...

wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif For the latter. You're lucky that you got the Disney dub of that film, the UK had to made to with our silly little English dub, with S.Ronan. Thankfully, I only watch anime with subtitles.

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:06 PM

So titty was the first to vote, a mere couple of days after the contest opened - no wonder it seemed like it had been open for ages to him! Naturally the current table is the same as his votes so it’s Chad Valley who takes the early lead from Midnight Juggernauts and Jonathan Johansson.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 18th February 2012, 08:07 PM

Also, I was very close to entering the Arrietty theme to this Unknown Pleasures competition. I kind of wish I did now.

Posted by: JohnMK 18th February 2012, 08:10 PM

Great top 3, I'd be happy if it stayed like that laugh.gif (obviously there's NO CHANCE).

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:11 PM

Next to vote was Gooddelta, he was responsible for introducing Freja Loeb into our collective lives - although I’m guessing you may have already sussed that as it did scream Rich to me! His 20 pointer was the catchy as hell U Got The Power and with that Swiss Lips join Chad Valley at the summit.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:12 PM

It will be a shame if Chad Valley win this, purely because it will prove no one listens to the songs they don't know in the Song of the Year voting...

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:12 PM

I thought Freja would be Rich's, if not then Tyron's. Another good entry from you!

Posted by: JohnMK 18th February 2012, 08:14 PM

Freja Loeb was an amazing entry, I hadn't pegged it as Gooddelta's though.

Posted by: alin 18th February 2012, 08:15 PM

Freja is a great musical discovery (for me).

PS If you ask her something on her Facebook page, she will respond. Very nice girl.

Posted by: Veriloquy 18th February 2012, 08:15 PM

Freja was SO OBVIOUSLY Rich that it hurt! WONDERFUL of course...

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:15 PM

Ghosthunter is up next and was a big fan of Gooddelta’s entry, giving Freja Loeb her first maximum of the evening! Scoring points from all 3 voters so far, it’s Jessica 6 who take over at the top. Several songs have yet to score a point, including ∆ who most are tipping to win - is this just a sign of poppier voters or a sign that things may not be going their way?

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:17 PM

Urgh at Photobucket shrinking the images! The last table with the final votes is going to be tiny. biggrin.gif

I had, largely because it was in the top 5 of his personal chart for several weeks laugh.gif

Anyway I am already doing better than I did with Mimicry cheer.gif

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:18 PM

Bic Runga was ok but not something I could get into much at all, simply nice enough.

Posted by: alin 18th February 2012, 08:18 PM

Freja Loeb FTW! smile.gif

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:19 PM

JakeWild was next to vote, his track Bones by Ms Mr is currently sitting inside the top 10 so it’s a good start for him. A maximum 20 for ∆ catapults Fitzpleasure into the top 5, a great example of how just one top score can really change your fortunes in this contest. 15 more for Jessica 6 however keeps them firmly in the lead with a 16 point gap over Swiss Lips. High points for Kill Screen Music and The Concept too, the latter scraping into the top 10 for the first time.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 18th February 2012, 08:19 PM

Well I don't have nothing, I guess that's as good a start as any.

Should've known Hello Hello was Ghosties from a mile off.

Posted by: 152chris 18th February 2012, 08:21 PM

Bones wub.gif hoping these votes aren't a sign of things to come though..!

Posted by: Mart!n 18th February 2012, 08:21 PM

I thought Freja was Tom Kay's entry I saw it in his personal chart at some point.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:22 PM

As I predicted, not the best of starts for mine!

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:25 PM

Stepping up next it’s Hits! He did indeed enter Amatorski to see if Soldier could do any better in Unknown Pleasures than it did in BJSC... well it currently sits in 17th which is top half (just!) so maybe he was correct all along that the track would be better suited to this?
Points for Freja Loeb, Swiss Lips and Jessica 6 keep them top 3 at this stage while a maximum 20 for VNV Nation catapults them up to 5th.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ 18th February 2012, 08:26 PM

My worst finish ever seems certain now. Embarrassing song choice really!

Posted by: Tom Titanium Kay 18th February 2012, 08:26 PM

I may be doing quite well kink.gif

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:28 PM

It’s a big welcome on board to Eyes next as he makes his Unknown Pleasures debut this contest with Sundown by Natalya Zerraga. It’s not going too well currently as Natalya sits in 28th, maybe things can improve later?
Another different 20 pointer here, this time in the shape of Bic Runga as Ghosthunter leaps into the top 10 in 7th. However it’s Swiss Lips who really benefit from these votes as the 15 points eases them past Jessica 6 and into the lead.

I reckon you may have sent one of the songs I've given a lot of points two, it's between you and one other. happy.gif

Posted by: JohnMK 18th February 2012, 08:29 PM

A few of my favourites are picking up big points (VNV Nation in particular) which is NICE.

Posted by: Eyes 18th February 2012, 08:29 PM

Well, at least I'm not on nothing so far!

Bic Runga was incredible though, although it was obviously Ghosty.

Posted by: Grebo 18th February 2012, 08:30 PM

I am sorry but that is an excruciating top 3

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:30 PM

A shame to see James Blake Oliver Tank on just the one point.

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:32 PM

The victor in the last contest was Medicated Soap and he’s up next with his votes, a second maximum for Chad Valley brings him storming back to joint first. 15 for Solar Bears takes them up into 6th while Alpine also enter the top 10 too.
Currently sitting 18th is Ben’s own track, Ford & Lopatin’s Joey Rogers, it’s not looking likely at the moment to provide him with a second victory but it’s early days yet...

I thought it was quite fab wub.gif

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:38 PM

Kill Screen Music was entered by Zechhh, alas the track is only just outside the top 20 at the moment. Hitstastic is no doubt screaming at his pc “I TOLD YOU SO” that Amatorski is doing better here, a maximum 20 lifts Soldier as high as 5th! 10 for NVN Nation lift them right into contention at this stage too as there’s nothing for the top 3.

Posted by: gooddelta 18th February 2012, 08:40 PM

I'm so pleased with how well Never Stop Coming Back is doing, it was a bit of a slow burner for me but reminded me of Ladyhawke at her peak - and perhaps what she should have released as her comeback single. I couldn't decide which of Flares and Never Stop Coming Back to send to BJSC but I decided that the former wouldn't go down at all well here, whereas the latter would probably do well in both, so to maximise the discovery potential that's the choice that I made.

QUOTE(Mart!n @ Feb 18 2012, 08:21 PM) *

It’s those pesky triple triangles up next! Always a shoe in for the top 5 in pretty much every contest, Ryan is currently sitting in... er... 32nd?!!! What’s gone on triangles? sad.gif
Another maximum 20 for ∆ bumps them up to 5th, the entire top 5 separated by only 2 points at this stage!
Last Lynx get off the mark which leaves only Post War Years and Snowmine as entries that are yet to score.

Posted by: Mart!n 18th February 2012, 08:44 PM

Looks like Oliver Tank is living up to his name heehee.gif

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:46 PM

Talking last time of the entries yet to score, I’m afraid that one of them was poor 152chris’ as he entered All Eyes.
We’ll move swiftly on from that though and focus instead on the top end again as yet another maximum 20 shoots ∆ into the lead! Finally Oliver Tank gets a high score too, the 15 points are no doubt more than welcome round Ryan’s...

Surprised how much love Husky Rescue are getting. I've heard their music since day one (they're Finnish) and they've never been as boring as they were with "Ship of Light".

Now they have a new singer..

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:51 PM

Sorry Chris. I hate seeing sad faces.

At least your favourite track is winning now!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 18th February 2012, 08:52 PM

I'm slowly falling down... Can't see my prediction of lowest ever finish being wrong!

Posted by: Ljósið 18th February 2012, 08:52 PM

Oooh I knew Ryan was Oliver Tank as soon as he said it was underperforming!

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:53 PM

Time for some of the others to catch up a bit again as Jessica 6 and Chad Valley score again, it’s the 20 for Solar Bears that really makes the difference though as they move up to 4th.
Alpine are currently 24th for Mart!n, will his prediction of starting slowly but ending up top 3 actually come to fruition?!!! ohmy.gif

(ooops, evidently forgot to put the positions on this one!)

Posted by: Tom Titanium Kay 18th February 2012, 08:55 PM

Interesting votes from Martin there... happy.gif

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 08:58 PM

Hi Jonny hi! Another new 20 pointer here as Last Lynx pick up their first top vote and more than quadruples their points in the process. ∆ pick up 15 and move further ahead at the top, Chad Valley remains second and continues to pick up points. A 10 for Husky Rescue elevates them into the top 10 here also.
Reverie Sound Revue currently sit in 13th, not a bad start for Jonny.

Posted by: Hitstastic 18th February 2012, 09:01 PM

"I TOLD YOU SO" laugh.gif

Seriously though, 'Soldier' would've done ok in BJSC but suffered to the curse of "wrong semi final". Thanks to those who gave the track points, especially Zech for the 20 points.

I'm hoping for a VNV Nation victory personally.

Posted by: Dandy* 18th February 2012, 09:03 PM

Another 20 point score for Gooddelta and Freja Loeb brings her right back into the mix and into the top 10. Consistent scoring has helped Ms Mr fly under the radar so far but this 15 brings them firmly into the spotlight as Bones eases up to second spot. Another double figure score brings ∆ just short of the 100 mark.
As for Mr Furlöng himself, well Last Lynx have scored a maximum 20 but currently are stuck outside the top 20.

Posted by: Grebo 18th February 2012, 09:04 PM

Fitzpleasure pulling away nicely now, be surprised if it doesn't win...

Posted by: gooddelta 18th February 2012, 09:08 PM

Posted by: råndomfurlöng 18th February 2012, 09:08 PM

Finally I can express my despair at my utter failure drama.gif I've since realised one of the other tracks on the Last Lynx EP might've been a better choice for success. That said, I do genuinely love it - and at least Jonny did too! (Thanks Jonny biggrin.gif )

Pleased to see Jessica 6 doing well - ADORE it, but I've known it for ages so I couldn't measure it against the rest. And Jake, SUPERB find in Ms Mr wub.gif

Snowmine is currently the only track left on no points and I’m afraid the unlucky entrant to have that claim is Thomsen - fingers crossed for votes soon. Not so long ago, Post War Years were there too but here Thomsen gives them a maximum 20 to bring them off the mark in style!
Young Empires are collecting points rather stealthily at this stage, another 3 leaves them in the top 10.

Apologies Rich, I shall have to amend the final table to include the additional max - I think everything else checks out okay though. It may or may not have quite an impact too! ohmy.gif

(I may have to add them all up again at the end just to make sure they're right, typing them out for hours on end did rather make my eyes go fuzzy! biggrin.gif )

Next time better use simple text, not JPEGs.

PS PNGs looks much better that JPEGs when you have much text. Try it.

So Jessica 6 was SKOB’s entry, an early leader which is still doing well as it’s within the top 5 - could this finally be the contest where SKOB’s entry shines? biggrin.gif
VNV Nation are the main act to benefit here, a 20 for them brings them back up to joint second - however both them and Ms Mr remain some way off the lead. And we can’t go on without mentioning Snowmine! 12 points lift them off the foot of the table, alas their gain is Smoosh’s loss - BJ picking on children! ohmy.gif

West is up next, fresh from his end of year victory in 2011 with Pumped Up Kicks, he’s not doing too badly here either as The Earth Plates Are Shifting currently sits in 11th.
At the top end, he really tightens things up as Chad Valley and VNV Nation get the big points while current leader ∆ is left empty handed - the gap down to 18 points. Midnight Juggernauts get a much needed lift, as do Snowmine who get yet more points to pull them away from the foot of the table.

Brett-Butler is next to vote. Alas Petter Seander has not picked up the votes so far, a shame as the song is definitely worth more than it’s current 33rd in my opinion! Points for Smoosh push himself down and leaves poor Eyes last on his debut. sad.gif
No points again for our current leader but only low points for it’s nearest competitors so not all is lost... yet?!!! tongue.gif

So we finally find out who has sent ∆ and alt-J is from our alt-forum leader himself, Mr Grebo. As Fitzpleasure is currently leading, I guess he’s doing pretty well so far. biggrin.gif
His 20 points for Ms Mr brings JakeWild right back into this, lifting him up to second spot. High points for Husky Rescue bring them back into the top 10 again - I’ll mention the high points for both Calla and Moi also as neither have set the table alight as yet.

Talking last time of Husky Rescue, here’s Tony’s set of votes next. Alas he doesn’t repay the favour to Grebo as he gives VNV Nation his maximum score and moves them five points in front at the top of the table! A 15 for Ms Mr causes further damage as they move above Fitzpleasure also.
Let’s take time out to mention Tommy Seebach as I haven’t really so far, however more solid scoring has now lifted him into the top 5 again - things are looking good for one of our oldest ever entrants!

Cal is up next, I’d say that it was fairly easy to guess that Moi was likely to be his entry - and one that is underperforming so far in my eyes.
A surprise top scorer here as Nouvelle Vague more than double their points tally in one set of votes, a difficult thing to do this late into the contest!
At the top it’s Ms Mr who now lead as a 12 from Cal helps them to go seven points clear of the two main challengers.

My votes up next and I award my top marks to the wonderful Swiss Lips, one of the most joyous tracks I’ve heard since I last listened to a Go! Team album. 15 points helps lift Oliver Tank to a new high of, er, still outside the top 20! All of the top 4 receive points from me so not much change at the top end.
My song, which was outed as being a Phoenix rip off from day one (well, I can’t deny it to be fair!), is very mid table so far. Tssssk.

Our Pav is up next and gives his 20 to Cal! Anyone would think they were Cyprus and Greece!
Let’s spare a moment to focus upon Mr Tank as he’s continuing to climb after the disastrous beginning, he’s in the top half! A 10 for ∆ brings them back within 2 points of VNV Nation, it’s all still a lot closer than I had expected at this stage!

Harve was originally sure of a decent finish... then he doubted after nobody was giving his entry any attention - well now he can rest a bit easier as Chad Valley currently sits in 5th...
And what’s that? Oliver Tank leaps up into 7th as a result of getting another 20 points here.
Tommy Seebach breaks through the 100 point barrier to leave all of our top 5 on 100 plus.

Tom Kay has quite an affect on the results here, his 20 for VNV Nation and nothing for ∆ result in the former going a full set of votes clear at the top. 15 for Swiss Lips brings them right back into contention for at least a top 5 finish. It’s all getting rather spaced out now, VNV Nation are on almost double the points of the track in 7th, surely it’s only one of the top 6 who stand a chance now...

Doctor Blind immediately undoes some of the damage that VNV Nation inflicted last time around by narrowing the gap at the top to just 7 points. These two are now beginning to pull out an advantage over the pack with only Ms Mr on their tails, will it stay this way until the end?
As for his own entry, Doctor Blind usually does very well indeed so the pressure is on for Slow Magic - some have tipped it for top 3 and, while it’s not doing quite that well, it is currently residing firmly within the top 10.

Next up is the poster formally known as Jake with the excellent Swiss Lips track. I shall be honest and say that I was certain that U Got The Power was going to walk this when I first heard the songs and, whilst it is doing well, it’s nowhere near as high as I’d thought.
Back to Jake’s votes, well it’s good news for all things triangular as both alt-J and Oliver Tank (who is now somehow up to fourth!) benefit highly from big scores here.

Hello to Pablo! Hurrah for people voting Swiss Lips wub.gif
Silver Swans seems to be an entry that lots of people have liked but not loved, it’s picked up quite a few small points from lots of voters but has alas missed the big hitting scores to push it higher up the table than 29th at the moment.

Another 20 for Freja Loeb next as it’s JohnMK’s turn to vote. A 15 for VNV Nation puts them back over an entire score ahead again - it’s looking it may be theirs to lose! ohmy.gif
Jonathan Johansson currently sits in 19th, fairly mid table at the moment but not too shoddy either. I guess this is one of the songs to suffer from several in this contest that sounded a bit similar?

alin was next to vote and it’s yet another 20 points for Freja Loeb, clearly a strong favourite with quite a few of the participants. With only a couple of voters left to go, it’s looking very like a two horse race now - have ∆ got the support to catch back up? ohmy.gif

So the poster to benefit from my inspired ‘decision’ to send out two versions of the track was our very own Tyrren. I am ever so slightly AGOG at how well Tommy Seebach is doing though, I thought he’d lost the plot when I saw what he’d sent to confirmation at first!
Let’s mention his 20 pointer, finally Silver Swans get some recognition from a voter, that pushes Pablo up to just outside the top 20. More votes for VNV Nation push them 5 further in front... yet we still don’t even know who sent it! Only TWO sets of votes to go folks...

That said, surely only a 20 for ∆ and a ‘did not vote’ for VNV Nation could change things at this late stage... and that’s incredibly unlikely to have happened...

VNV Nation 'Nova' was easily the standout track out of all the 34 finalists so I'm definitely happy to see this winning.

Also happy that Amatorski did relatively well. 'Soldier' was too indie for BJSC so I'm glad that some people made a discovery from the track here.

Joint last - I didn't see that coming. I honestly thought that Petter Seander was the strongest song I've sent to the contest in some time - evidently not.

I did love the remix of Bubble Sex, although I guess it's because it's remixed by The Twelves, who were also responsible for the single mix of French Horn Rebellion's 'Beaches and Friends', which was my no.1 song of 2010.

The final leaderboard has 3,032 points. 33 voters each giving 93 points is 3069, less the 20 deduction for Casey means there should be 3049 points so 17 have gone missing somewhere. Sorry Dandy* tongue.gif

TBH I think that overall this has been the blandest competition so far.

Oh and VNV Nation ultimately only got 2 points from me because of this reason. It really reminded me of something like Collective Soul, majorly bland early 90s Christian rockers.

There are some things here that are obvious BJSC rejects. But what would the answer be? It was always meant to be a genre-less competition but things like Jessica 6 so obviously belong in BJSC it hurts (and sorry Rich but Freja belongs there as well no matter how well it did here.)

Why should anything belong anywhere? It's not like Never Stop Coming Back was outrageously out of place in Unknown Pleasures, and a lot of people made a great discovery out of it. I can't say that I was very keen on some of the entries in the top ten either but I wouldn't begrudge them their place here, if it's what somebody wants to introduce to everybody else. I don't think that UP/BJSC should have active genre divides, I find the variety of genres a whole lot more interesting, making both a lot more enjoyable for me. If BJSC were made only pop, and UP was made only indie then I'd have no interest in participating in either personally. The only answer would be banning certain people from Unknown Pleasures, and others from BJSC, or forcing people to enter songs from certain genres but that would be incredibly unfair and restrictive imo.

Posted by: 152chris 19th February 2012, 02:06 PM

Not really experienced in the latter but surely there needs to be some kind of divide between this and BJSC or there may as well just be one competition? (excluding members/vetting songs is a bit of a no no though)

I thought the quality was ok but the result not so great this time

Not really experienced in the latter but surely there needs to be some kind of divide between this and BJSC or there may as well just be one competition? (excluding members/vetting songs is a bit of a no no though)

I thought the quality was ok but the result not so great this time

There's a subconscious divide already I think, I don't find the songs being submitted to the two contests at all similar overall personally. The majority of the songs in the last BJSC contest would be panned as entries in here and vice versa. Of the posters that enter both competitions, I think there's already a thought process as to which competition is likely to be a better fit for a song, i.e. Hitstastic and Solider.

I certainly wouldn't have sent my recent BJSC entry Flares to this, I'm well aware that it would have gone down like a lead balloon. I really didn't expect Never Stop Coming Back to cause an uproar though, it sounds like it could be by any number of acts that have had active threads in the indie forum before. If my taste is considered too poppy for UP then I'd reluctantly step back but I think it would be a shame as I enjoy participating. I wouldn't like to lose countries from BJSC on the basis that their choices are 'too indie' either, I've made some fantastic indie discoveries there over the years.

I don't think you should step back. In fact I think you bring something different to the table but when you compare the top 5 from UP1 and the top 5 from UP8, there has been a definite shift.

Posted by: Ljósið 19th February 2012, 02:24 PM

I don't think we need to do something to divide between BJSC and UP (at least yet). Because more than half of last month's BJSC entries would be ridiculed in UP. And vice versa. Even if the quality of UP7 was lower than usual, it's still a VERY long way to go down in order to meet the standards of BJSC.

Yes, I just basically said BJSC has become majorly crappy, yet I'm still participating in it. That's called an addiction. sad.gif

Oh no doubt, I suppose it's due to quite a few more pop/mainstream fans joining UP since the inception of the contest on Buzzjack. I'd also say the same for BJSC though, it's so much more poppy now than it was even a year ago, I'm not exactly ecstatic about that situation but I still make a lot of discoveries in amongst the sea of bubblegum pop so I persist laugh.gif It's strange, I'm one of the most poppy participants in UP but in BJSC I can assure you that I'm nowhere near it. If you look back at BJSCX or even the contests of early 2010, BJSC was much more comparable with the current state of UP, lots of indie/pop-indie reguarly in the top ten. Now its pop, pop and more pop. UP is definitely more pop than it used to be but there's still a huge gulf between the two I think.

I was surprised that you only seemed to like 3 or 4 songs out of almost 50 in the last contest, I think I'd probably call it a day if it ever got like that for me. I'm addicted to it only in the way that I love making new discoveries that I wouldn't hear otherwise but if that situation ever dried up then I wouldn't hesitate to leave.

Not that I'd want you to leave of course, you're an essential part of the contest. But last month was unusually poppy, even for BJSC.

Posted by: Dandy* 19th February 2012, 02:38 PM

I don't think Jessica 6 was that out of place really, it reminded me of a Hercules & Love Affair track, a band that would definitely find a home in this forum.

Posted by: alin 19th February 2012, 02:40 PM

Pop or not, if a song is good enough I will vote for it.

Posted by: SKOB 19th February 2012, 02:40 PM

Jessica 6 were the poppiest thing I've ever taken part with but I have never participated BJSC and thus have no idea what kind of songs do well there..

There's been tons of electro pop songs in UPs before so I thought why not Jessica 6. But that's as pop as I'd go probably.

I actually liked about 8 finalists. It's 4 I cared about laugh.gif

I have issues about letting go. sad.gif Plus it's possible that this was just a one month thing, and it will get better.

Maybe with Dandy* hosting, everybody will be inspired to send less POP entries!

Posted by: Dandy* 19th February 2012, 03:14 PM

I'm not familiar with all of them but it's certainly not looking that way so far!

I just hope there are some tracks I like, I imagine hosting will be quite a chore unless I actually have an interest in which track wins.

A tacky girlband electro-pop song was one of my potentials but as I had other options I decided not to go with it, much to your relief I'm sure laugh.gif I only tend to go generic if I've got no other ideas or if I'm really besotted with a song, and then those entries are usually the ones I look back on months later and think 'why on earth did I send that'.

I've hosted some dire contests quality wise, some of the very worst or most forgettable in BJSC history. Luckily, the last one I got to host (Lana Del Rey vs. Frida Gold) was the best quality contest we'd had in AGES wub.gif Shame I sent Ria to that one, consider me guilty as charged on the generic pop front that time around.

Sorry I missed all this last night. For once my number 1 won the competition. I thought it was quite a weak set of songs. I only really loved one. I also thought I would do better than 14th this time because of a number of factors

1. It was the second track of cd 1 giving it the chance of being more familiar or clicking earlier with voters
2. The fact that the rest of the songs weren't very strong in my opinion
3. The song might appeal to a wider audience given it's nature.

I was wrong on all counts laugh.gif

Well done, Dand...it was worth the wait. It can't be easy coming up with new ways of presenting the results.

Husky Rescue and Chad Valley are probably my favourites here, but I knew them both too well already. I think both would have done better otherwise.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 19th February 2012, 05:00 PM

I have no problem with anything in the competition, there are songs I think are great and rubbish from all genres entered, and I like the variety as in the last two or three a I've found a lot of songs are very similar and can often merge into one, so I'm all for a poppier 'Never Stop Coming Back' or 'Up In The Sky' to be a bit more varied.

Considering she was in Hercules and Love Affair ~*~ She sang on a couple of tracks on the first album ("You Belong" etc.) She made total sense for this competition in my eyes.

I just feel like what did well in the first couple of Unknown Pleasures would not do nearly as well now. I think that does have a lot to do with a lot of new participants in this contest who normally don't post in the indie forum at all. I definitely don't think we should do anything about it or restrict genres or anything, I just think it's something to note. (UP will never end up like BJSC but it is heading in that general directiono which makes me a little bummed). This could just be a one-off type of thing tho

Agree, the more participants, the more diversity. 30+ is the ultimate maximum though, to keep it reasonable for voters. I'm sure most people won't listen to the songs more than twice or three times (as I do).

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 19th February 2012, 09:07 PM

To be fair the first ever Unknown Pleasures top 3 was The Naked And Famous, David Holmes and HEALTH. I certainly don't understand how 'Nova' is any more BJSC or pop friendly/appealing than 'Young Blood' or 'I Heard Wonders' to be honest? I don't see the last couple of top 10s as being any less varied than previous contests. There's absolutely nothing wrong here at all.

Posted by: tonyttt31 19th February 2012, 09:37 PM

The first UP is still the only one that has yielded 5 solid gold tracks for me.

Got 15 votes. WOT. Rich got 15 votes and finished 3rd ohmy.gif

So? I got 14 votes and finished second.

Oh BLESS YOU Mark for doing this.

Posted by: tonyttt31 28th February 2012, 11:17 PM

My leader board position is higher than my best position in any of the rounds.

Posted by: 152chris 29th February 2012, 12:43 AM

Looking at some of the songs in the top and bottom 10 is really quite baffling. Waterworld vs. The Earth Plates Are Shifting? Would have definitely expected similar votes for those two.

So I finished 16th. Not used to this kind of scores, as most of the time I get a few 20's/15's/12's and barely anything else laugh.gif

Oh BLESS YOU Mark for doing this.

I started when I saw you weren't likely to be on for a while, just the occasional vote put in here and there. I only did it because I wanted to update the overall stats!

Posted by: tonyttt31 29th February 2012, 12:01 PM

I've always wondered who has given who the most points. If the spreadsheets are available I wouldn't mind doing the number-crunching to find out.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 29th February 2012, 12:17 PM

I have 1-4 and 8, I'll pop them all in the same Excel file and update usernames in them to make it easier.

Posted by: tonyttt31 29th February 2012, 12:23 PM

Thanks. I can never follow username changes around here.

Posted by: JakeWild 29th February 2012, 01:31 PM

MOVIN ON UP

Got 2 songs to choose from for the next one. One of them I don't really know if they're that unknown and the other only has 300 plays on last.fm so definitely is.

I really would have liked to have done it but realistically things were not going my way with this one so your intervention is much appreciated.

I now own a spreadsheet y'all, huzzah.

I can therefore confirm to you all that Mark's final table is correct.

The CHEEK!

Posted by: Dandy* 3rd March 2012, 11:18 PM

When will the next one of these be anyway?

I'd rather not wait absolutely ages for it, maybe the end of March to begin?

Posted by: 152chris 4th March 2012, 08:15 PM

Soon! Got me a corker.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 4th March 2012, 09:06 PM

I think I have my next entry too. I love it but I can't see it doing very well at all but after a 33rd I can't get much worse!

Posted by: Tom Echo Kay 4th March 2012, 09:43 PM

I'm wondering about sending my original choice for this to the next contest. It would still be eligible, apart from the fact that it's just been sent (by someone else) to BJSC. But I do love it wub.gif

What is the policy on well-known people featuring on songs for this? (just out of interest biggrin.gif)

QUOTE

01 There is no rule with regard to genre or length.
02 The artist or band of your choice must not have reached the top 40 singles chart in the UK.
03 The artist or band of your choice must not have reached the top 20 albums chart in the UK.

04 The song must not be on the current UK release schedule.
05 To enter the competition you must send an MP3 by PM and also include a link to the song on (preferably) YouTube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud.
06 The MP3 must be either 256 or 320kbps please, 128, 64, 32, 16 or 8kbps would do shockingly poorly so there’s really no need to bother with them.
07 You must not choose a song that has been previously entered (full list below).

08 Songs from the same artist will not be allowed to participate in the contest simultaneously. Also, songs by acts who featured in the last contest will not be accepted. If two people choose the same act, the one who submitted their entry first will be allowed to enter the act.
09 You must not reveal or even hint at which song you have sent. Part of the fun is not knowing who sent what so please do stick to this one.

10 I reserve the right to refuse an entry if I feel it does not fit within the spirit of the competition.

Posted by: 152chris 6th March 2012, 11:51 PM

I mean in terms of x ft. y, if y breaks those rules but isn't the main artist.

Posted by: Grebo 7th March 2012, 12:07 AM

I'm pretty sure any artist that has had a hit wouldn't be allowed even if they were a featured artist but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Posted by: Grebo 7th March 2012, 08:54 PM

I was sent a question by pm from another member who wishes to remain anonymous

QUOTE
Question is whether entering a cover of a well known song is allowed, given the artist is unknown and the cover differs dramatically from the original version (ie. pretty much new song, same lyrics)

What do you all think?

Posted by: Harve 7th March 2012, 09:24 PM

There are lots of grey lines. There are plenty of well known artists that haven't had a top 40 single or a top 20 album (Crystal Castles? Animal Collective?), and there are plenty of minor hits that have since been forgotten. I think it should be at the host's discretion as to which songs are eligible.

Posted by: Freeze 12th March 2012, 12:53 AM

When does people want the next UP to start? As.. I'm still contemplating whether I am well suited enough to host this contest. Well naturally I know how to host, but I'm not familiar with this part of the forum at all and I'm not that 'indie music competent' to know what would be eligible/accepted as entries. I also don't know of/know that many members in here to write interesting comments and sorts. So my way of hosting this could well get pretty boring, ignorant and/or uninteresting drama.gif unsure.gif

Posted by: 152chris 14th March 2012, 03:25 PM

I'm liking the idea of the end of March!

Posted by: Horatio 2nd April 2012, 04:33 PM

The spirits are saying it's time for a new UP.

Posted by: 152chris 8th April 2012, 10:15 PM

Is Freeze still hosting yess?

Posted by: Freeze 10th April 2012, 01:14 PM

I've been away for most of this month, so haven't been able to begin anything yet. And I'm still unsure wether I am the right person to do this, but I could give it a try regardless. Don't think I have time for this until next week anyway though, so if most of you feel that's too late for a contest, then someone else has to play the host.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ 10th April 2012, 01:57 PM

Take as long as you want! Hopefully you don't feel pressured into doing it though, it's completely up to you.

Posted by: Grebo 10th April 2012, 08:18 PM

Yep, there is no schedule for UP so just start it if and when you feel ready.

Posted by: Freeze 11th April 2012, 11:47 AM

Alright, thanks! I'll let you all know when I can begin the next one happy.gif

Posted by: Severin 12th April 2012, 03:50 PM

Hello indie forum, it's rather scary in here! I'm considering taking part in this next edition of Unkown Pleasures (Contrary to popular belief I do enjoy indie music!). Can anyone join or is this some kind of exclusive club?

Posted by: Grebo 12th April 2012, 06:20 PM

Anyone can join but it's usually restricted to around 30 entries so it's first come first served (this is upto to the discretion of the host though.)

Posted by: Harve 15th April 2012, 12:36 AM

I have so many songs that I want to enter. And so little time to enter them, haha.

Posted by: Freeze 17th April 2012, 03:29 AM

cheer.gif I've decided I'd like to begin this on thursday, but I have some - if I can call them - 'inquiries' before that:

1. I was wondering if anyone would fancy making a banner for the contest? When I made one for BJSC it took me ages to figure out and create. I also had photoshop at that point. But I don't have that anymore nor do I have any ideas what so ever for this contest. So for the sake of making things prettier/cooler and more.. yeah, interesting - if anyone's willing, that would be great! biggrin.gif
2. Is there a website where I can easily find out what songs are eligible to enter? If there isn't, then I probably could use some help in filtering out confirmed entries and such thinking.gif unsure.gif
3. How many participants SHOULD I allow in? I don't mind more than 30, but if most of you feel that 31+ is a bit too much, then I'll be happy to abide to 30 entries.
4. How long should the voting period be? 14 days? And which day is most suited for results presentation? (I'm generally not that familiar with when other stuff are being presented on this site)

That's about it for now! happy.gif

(I kinda feel like an amateur blush.gif)

2. These were the rules for the last edition. Can't see any reason to alter them TBH

If you want help then I guess you can pm one of us. I would be up for that as I'm sure others would as well. As long as you didn't reveal who sent what to anyone else.

3. It's upto you how many entrants but most particpants have historically felt that 30 is a good number. I'm sure this could be stretched to 32ish if needs be.

4. The voting period for the last UP was about 2 and a half weeks but again that's up to you. I think this did get extended in the end as it did seem to last forever - Sorry Dandy! And results are presented in any way you feel comfortable with. I wouldn't worry about the presentation, after all the music is the thing!

Are you thinking of starting this today? Or next week?

That's alright. I guess there won't be any spesific problems without a banner for the contest. Thank you for answering my questions, though. It helped!
