The time has come (again)!
It's time to crown the 29th winner of UP
Be here at 7 PM and follow the results show live, guess who does well, gets loads of 20s, flops, flops hard, or, most importantly, wins the shiniest title and the reward that comes with it (hosting UP 30).
I'll reveal the votes one by one, making your life easier if you're planning to double-check my Maths and my not-too-brilliant Excel skills. If I messed up somewhere (let's face it, there's a huge chance of that), then I can assure you that I messed up everything from that point on, including the final scoreboard. We'll see. It should be fun.

Great. I’ll try to follow this live

Great stuff. There's only one person that I definitely know sent in their song, so will be interesting to see who sent what.

Really wanna see who sent some of these, some very eclectic stuff!
Posted by: Iz~ 22nd August 2020, 03:39 PM
Very interested to see who sent what, I have a few possible leads but I'm not that confident in them
as for doing well I hope my 20 pointer does well, but could go many ways

Excited for this! Hoping for good things for my entry but expecting bad things
Posted by: Bré 22nd August 2020, 04:22 PM
I was 100% expecting a bottom 5 result here when I first confirmed my song but it went down pretty well at the plug.dj listenthrough so I'm raising my hopes a bit - coming for merely bottom 10
Really think a certain song is coming to landslide this.

I'm dreading my entry being revealed — no one is perfect...
Posted by: ✖ leww ✖ 22nd August 2020, 04:31 PM
i'm PERCHED to represent the bottoms of the world by being right at the tail end of that scoreboard tonight!!
Posted by: dandy* 22nd August 2020, 04:49 PM
I think my entry is going to do far worse than it deserves to. However I know this will be your collective failing if it occurs!

After Jade's votes we have the same top 3, Lawrence Rothman firmly sits at the top, Atomic Drum Assembly and Archive are getting a bit closer to each other. Only 2 songs received points from all the voters, one of them is Lawrence Rothman, of course, while the other is Islet's 'Geese' with 6 points altogether. 8 songs are still on 0 points, although uhsting's 'Untitled 1' got a mention, at least.

Comin' In Hot was very catchy, had a Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still kinda vibe to it
Yeah, got that during the plug session too, had to stay really quiet (as I sent 'Feel It Still' too)
btw I'll be a bit more involved shortly but I'm a b*tch and still have a bit from the preparation...

HANNIE (ft. Ralph) - Target
HANNIE, a half German, half English production duo represents Cameron with 'Target', taken from their latest album, 'Karma's Calling'. 'Target' is just inside the top 20 collecting 20 points so far.

Had a very strong feeling 'Sweet Leaf Of The North' belonged to Suedey thank you for the points!

Mik Artistik was one of about three artists I was already familiar with because of his multiple Glastonbury sets each year, but I can't say I wanted to listen to that a second time.
Posted by: Bré 22nd August 2020, 07:02 PM
I imagine 'Sweet Leaf Of The North' would have some charm to it if you were listening to it being performed in a bar or something but as a recorded song the vocals on it are really not it unfortunately...! (Thanks for some more points tho anyway Suedey x)
Correctly predicted that HANNIE would be Cameron! Decent song (if a little too poppy for this contest)

Yes the vocals on Sweet Leaf... were really bad. When it started I thought it was going to be a little like Lemon Jelly or Public Service Broadcasting but it didn't live up to those standards unfortunately.

10 King Rollo
Archive - Lights
'Lights' is from the fifth studio album by British trip hop progressive and alternative group Archive - and yes, this is the longest song on the album. By far. King Rollo does really well with his choice so far, sitting comfortably at number 5. Does Rollo have a hit on his hands or is it only a strong start?

Rollo being Archive was fairly likely. I though it was a really good instrumental and then loved it when the vocal kicked in.
Posted by: Brett-Butler 22nd August 2020, 07:09 PM
Colour me shocked that Rollo entered a song that's as long as a half-hour TV show without its ads.
Posted by: Bré 22nd August 2020, 07:09 PM
Rollo having the longest song again, truly a shocking development etc. xx (was a worthwhile listen though, another good song from Archive though not quite as great as 'Bullets' for me and as I said on plug I do think I'd have liked it more if the vocal part was a bit shorter and/or more varied).
Thank you Rollo, hooray for being top 10 at least briefly
Vandal Moon not yet running away with this as much as I was expecting them to but still pretty early days

BTW Frank did everyone vote in the end? Don't think you have posted about there being any non-voters unless I missed it somewhere. x

Lower Dens - I Drive
dandy* sent Lower Dens, an American alternative indie pop band from Baltimore, Maryland. Their song 'I Drive' is in the bottom 10 currently - hopefully not for a long time.

Afternoon Frank! Here are my votes for the latest Unknown Pleasures... on the whole I thought it was a pretty strong bunch, even if it did get a little less varied towards the end. Good luck in the results to all of the ones listed below...

We have the same top 10, big points to Atomic Drum Assembly and Miel make their place in the top 10 a bit more stable. 'Silk For Gold' cracks the top 20 after getting a 15.
Our next voter is: Codeiric Diary - Is he flopping hard or only a little?? Guess.
Posted by: Bré 22nd August 2020, 07:45 PM
I was a little off thinking I had the same 20 as dandy* then, at least it did scrape into your votes
I was about 90% sure Lower Dens would be dandy* for the same reason that I knew Addy's entry, although thought there was slightly more chance this one might have been a coincidence.
Posted by: Jade 22nd August 2020, 07:46 PM
My grip on the top 10 is getting looser, more points please x
My only guess for Dandy was Vandal Moon so I'm surprised that only got 1 point!

Vandal Moon - Hurt
Nope, Cody's not flopping at all, as he sent 'Hurt' from Vandal Moon - a synth, new wave, & post punk inspired band from California. 'Hurt' has a 23-point lead at the moment... how long will it last though?

Lauren Bousfield - Clean Strategic Narratives With Relatable Messaging Murder Them Violently
Composer and electronics mastermind (ccol but not my words) Lauren Bousfield provides the weirdness in UP 29. The song with the longass title in taken from the 2020 album, Palimpsest. Yes, there is an album, with tracks similar to this one. Wow. Iz~ does pretty well, by the way, currently 11th.

Edwina Biglet and The Miglets - Thing
Popchartfreak sent Edwina Biglet And The Miglets from 1972, so 'Thing' is easily the oldest song of the contest (says me, confidently, without checking). Quite interestingly, I've just found a copy on https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Edwina-Biglet-And-The-Miglets-Thing-7-Inch-Vinyl-Single-RCA-1972-/143423598976 'Thing' is 26th with 35 points, ready to crack the top 20.

(most of the time I can call Jacob's entry but I was way off this time, I thought he'd be Laura Jones)

There's one point between Vandal Moon and Little Jinder's Unreleased Romance, we can't really talk about a runaway winner at this point. Something Fleeting in the top 10, for the very first time. Again, 8 and 17 are extremly close, only 14 points between them, a single 20 is enough to get ahead of the pack (not to mention that after vote 28, the whole top 17 can still win).

I knew you'd know it was me, but must admit didn't know how much you liked it, if at all.
I saw Islet at a very small Welsh festival last year and I absolutely loved them, a completely unique live experience. Started listening to them and I've really enjoyed their album 'Eyelet' from this year, and 'Geese' is easily my favourite thing on it. 'Clouds' is more accessible but I wasn't trying to do well, it's done about what I thought..

Cody - looks like it probably wasn't as comfortable a lead as I expected it to be but Vandal Moon definitely stuck out to me as an overwhelming favourite to win and it is definitely the deserved winner for me, I was glad there was one song in here that I genuinely wanted to give more points than Another Sky (fwiw I was planning to knock Another Sky down to 2nd in favour of a discovery anyway if it had remained my favourite song but in the end it fell to 2nd in my votes naturally).
Thanks to Harry for a few more points too (and it's a shame your song isn't doing better although not too surprising for similar reasons to Matthew Frederick) - hope I can cling onto the top 20 here ~

Thom Femenerkay gave 20 points to Vandal Moon, making 'Hurt' kind of a runaway winner. The top 3 remains the same, but rewarding big points to Lawrence Rothman cost Thom the 4th place as Prince Rama slips back to 5th. Orville Peck finishes in the top 10 (8th after tiebreak) and Solo Ansamblis gets back to the top 20 in the last second. Dobbo is our non-voter, so Gallant gets a 20-point deduction, pushing Matthew Frederick in the top 30.

Vandal Moon is a fine winner, congratulations!

Congrats Cody! Sounded a pretty clear landslide winner from this bunch (I'm surprised even you thought this wouldn't happen )

Congrats again to our winner, Codeiric Diary!!
Vandal Moon - Hurt - 211 points
Thanks a lot Everyone for participating, it was great fun! Btw. 'Hurt' WAS a landslide winner, I had to do some magic to make the reveals a bit more exciting. Hope my numbers were right-ish...
Still no coveted top 10, which is a bit of a shame after I was as high as 4th not too long ago, but I'll happily take a new peak of 12th anyway
Thanks for your great hosting Frank

11th is a bit of a shame but delighted to be so high after a slow start for Something Fleeting! Hurt is a brilliant winner as well, was top of my rankings after first listen but slipped a bit (it did mean I could give more points to songs that needed it more as well). Atomic Drum Assembly and Bahia both being Top 5 is great as well and signs my taste might actually be coming a little more mainstream (can I qualify in BJSC now please).
Disappointed to see Right Place so low as well as Laura Jones but that's how it goes - congrats again to Cody and thanks for a great contest Frank!

Yaaas at Top 10 for Orville - I’m as surprised as anyone else I’m a fan. Thanks for the 3 15s and the 20 in particular!

A great winner, well done Cody! Glad some of my favourites (Little Jinder, Prince Rama, Orville Peck) got top 10 in the end. I'm pretty pleased with 16th place for my first attempt too! I quickly realised it didn't really fit into any of the main categories (beep boop pop banger/instrumental thing/contains guitar) so I'm surprised by how high I ended up :-) Thanks Frank for hosting!

congrats cody!! happy to see Orville top 10, didn't think it would do well in UP at all lol

Thanks Frank for hosting! I was expecting a last place finish because the entry is very ahead of its time but I'm happy to finish in the top 30, while getting a 20-pointer! Congrats Cody on the win!

Congratulations Cody on winning and thanks to Frank for hosting this contest.
71% of the points for my song came from the four voters who gave it top points. I hope they continue to play 'Lights' long after this is over. I never tire of listening to it myself.
Good to see the Lawrence Rothman track finish top 5,it was wonderful.

Oh so that last vote has made Vandal Moon look much more like the landslide win I had been predicting, I am right after all then! I guess this was the reason for Frank meddling with the voting order then (aka the exact opposite of what Cody said xx). Also kind of shows that even 'landslide' wins in UP aren't really that secure though considering the song was only barely winning just a couple of votes before the end.
Thanks Tom for securing me a top 20 with those final points 19th isn't an amazing result but I'll definitely take it when I was predicting it to be a bottom 5 hit initially and still thought it'd be bottom 10 going into this thread tonight lel ~ Glad that it seemed to have decently wide appeal even if it didn't get high points from many (my only medal position coming from Jade, #Jadaphonia strength confirmed once more!)
Voted for 6 of the top 10 and 3 of the others were in my commiserations so very little to complain about there, particularly happy that Color Therapy managed to sneak into the top 10 as well as Another Sky getting a pretty good result despite an underwhelming response on plug.dj <3 then a couple more of my votes just short of the top 10 too, a bit of a shame 'Spaghetti' didn't clutch out a top 10 meaning Jade is still waiting for a top 10 here, next time for sure!!
Thanks for hosting Frank, has been fun x

Oh some big points right at the end taking me out of that endless drought/small points, yay *.* I've just checked and this is my ELEVENTH top 10 and third to finish 4th I'm not sure I've even managed that many top 10s in BJSC and I've been competing there for almost ninety contests! Thanks everyone that voted, in such a barren year for new music, this was one of my favourite discoveries and I'm really pleased to see others take to it as well (It also completely slipped my mind that Marissa Nadler was entered into Nuggets, I guess these songs don't stick with me as much).
I really liked most of that top 10, my whole top 3 is in there, if only Lauren Bousfield could've stayed there too though at least most of them are in the top half.
Thanks for the great hosting, Frank! (I know how you feel at trying to hide obvious landslides after PFSC this year!)

Sorry guys, I entirely missed this but thank you for all the points And great hosting Frank.
Astonished to do so much better in my UP comeback than BJSC, maybe the name recognition counts against me
Fantastic winner Cody, I look forward to your future UP and BJSC entries

I’m FLOORED, thank you guys so much for all the support! This was a song that I heard on a jog and was like “mmm, I’ll add that to my BJSC potentials, whatever” and then I saw this contest open and I was like “I’ll send it here, whatever”, didn’t think it would go THIS far! Wow.
That said, I’m disappointed that none of my top 5 ended up making the top 10 I thought at least Essáy or Caveboy would make it in safely At least we got Prince Rama, Little Jinder and Color Therapy in there, fantastic songs!
Posted by: Riser 22nd August 2020, 10:32 PM
Congrats Cody, quite a decisive victory in the end! I hardly ever "get" the winning song, but certainly enjoyed and voted for this one. I would've enjoyed Jupiter's song winning too tbf!
Thanks to everyone who pointed Caveboy! I'd originally sent it to BJSC a few months ago before changing my entry and deciding UP would suit this more. Top 10 would've been nice but I'm quite happy to finish in the top half along with 3 of my top 4 (oops at Dobbo not voting when Gallant's points total was already far too low )!
And thanks for hosting Frank, you did a nice job!

I actually don't remember this... so there are 3 different people who did this in this contest
I feel like Caveboy might have actually done better in BJSC than it did here tbh! But at least it did pick up a bit in the end after being in the low 20s at the time your votes were revealed.
Posted by: Jacob 😮 22nd August 2020, 10:59 PM
Thanks for all the points everyone! Particularly Frank with the 20. I really didn't expect to do this well, though I was happy with the plug reaction. Can definitely recommend the entire Color Therapy album Mr Wolf Is Dead if you liked Screw Eyes. Really happy with 9th though was worried I'd slip out of top 10 for the last few, very tight with points in the lower end of the top 10.
Very well deserved winner and nice results overall, voted for lots of the absolute bangers near the top here.
QUOTE(Iz~ @ Aug 22 2020, 09:15 PM)
okay okay now I'm seeing the title of Color Therapy's song in an entirely different light
(most of the time I can call Jacob's entry but I was way off this time, I thought he'd be Laura Jones)
Omg I didn't even consider that but that's incredible and I'm taking it. xxx
I did like Laura Jones, it only just slipped out of my votes at the end.
Tbf that ambient sound with big drums and stuff is very me I think.

Sorry I missed this Frank, thanks for hosting and organising! Congrats Cody, thanks to everyone who pointed Thing (I thought it was obviously me, and was expecting a very marmite reaction - thanks Jupiter especially for the 20 I genuinely love this odd experimental little record with the synths. Chart DJ Alan Freeman played it, and I bought it, and that was about all I think!
I thought Jordan had entered Jade's entry - wrong! (But no surprise it got his max points). I would have put money on the leaf windscreen song being Suedey and it just missed my points, just a bit too long for the amusement-value it started off with.
Some of the tracks I have now bought and will be charting, so thanks all for the tips!

Not quite as wildly off as it looked earlier but: oops. Honestly it just sounded like the Naked & Famous and would appeal across the spectrum.
Max Cooper did a little better than the mid teens placement I was expecting and I'm delighted for Little Jinder!

Thank you for hosting! Missed out on most of this at the time — but enjoyed reading through it all today.
Definitely one of the strongest editions I have taken part in! Going to be difficult to keep that level of quality next time, although Remi Wolf won't be involved...

Do we have a thread for our run of entries/placements anywhere?
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 26th August 2020, 08:30 PM
I indicated in this thread some years ago that I'd updated the stats, but if they're posted anywhere I can't find it - certainly not a thread I started. I'm still using the same laptop though so have found the spreadsheet - I have got everyone's finishes up to UP16 so might update over the next week or so. Unless they do exist somewhere in a more updated format already and I just can't find it?
Posted by: Bré 26th August 2020, 09:09 PM
If such a thing does exist I don't know where it is either, all we have is the pinned archive thread with links to the contests.
