Posted by: blacksquare 17th March 2022, 09:37 AM

Well well — fancy seeing you here.

The results for Nuggets Fourteen will start tonight at 7:30pm (GMT) and by the end of the night, we'll have a brand new inductee into the Nuggets hall of fame.
Thank you to everyone for joining in and voting over the last few weeks — also a huge thank you to anyone who had to deal with my incessant requests for song commentary.

Here is a reminder of all the entries competing tonight.

I think BRUIT has this in the bag.

Posted by: Izzy 💀 17th March 2022, 11:30 AM

Probably a post-rock winner and could well be BRUIT, although I feel 'Zombified' might do well among the harder songs.

Going to throw Cellar Darling into the ring as a potential winner!

Oh yeah they have to be worth a shout too. Eluveitie descendants are stronk *. (also it's an improvement on their initial songs after splitting from Eluveitie, though I haven't listened to 'Avalanche' for ages and it's sounding pretty good now so perhaps always good)

Posted by: Bjork 17th March 2022, 12:33 PM

I have to say I was very surprised at the entries,
my concept of indie/rock/alt guitar songs is some Irish troubadour singing with an acoustic guitar
not heavy metal like 80% of the entires were biggrin.gif amazed people are into that to be honest but alas...
I see now this was not really for me biggrin.gif

Nocturna was a hit with the plug attendees tbh and the anime ones

guitar emoji spam 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

glad we could enlighten you bjork

based on music lovers I talk to outside of here, heavy song love abounds - also metal is a really interesting set of genres well worth exploring. this very contest had loads of different post-rock, prog-rock, goth metal, glam metal, pop punk, sadly no death metal though, we should fix that.

that's not to say acoustic and alt-folk isn't welcome in Nuggets and actually IIRC it dominated the earlier editions, but I've always viewed this as a safe space for people to go guitar-crazy and I often find such strumming a tad boring, with head-banging a much preferred preference.

Posted by: Severin 17th March 2022, 12:57 PM

I might decide to put something heavier in for the next one. I've kept my entries very light so far but may ramp it up next time. Mind you I'll probably go too far the other way if the polished and glossy entries in this round is anything to go by

Posted by: Brer 17th March 2022, 02:37 PM

The winner of the last contest was about as far as you can get away from heavy metal tbf... laugh.gif

Either Cellar Darling or BRUIT ≤ would make for fantastic winners so hopefully people are along the right lines there. Cellar Darling was the one that jumped at me as a winning contender too.

Why ‘Forever Lost’?
I really liked the build-up and gradual ascent from quiet piano to harsh guitars and the mood is complemented beautifully by the video. I admittedly didn't link to this as there are some scenes that are quite hard to watch (namely the chicken battery farm which honestly contributed to me becoming vegetarian x), but a few of you saw it at the listen through anyway and the reactions weren't too strong so maybe I overreacted kink.gif linked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEphsKl1g9M if you're curious x

For 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)', the build-up from a quiet, orchestral ambience to a bursting guitar-led wall of sound as it builds to its crescendo was just beautiful to witness, I love music that takes you on a journey and this really does (and particular claps for doing this all live!), thank you to whoever sent it, it's one of my favourite Nuggets entries <3

02 DOBBO ◼ MASTER BOOT RECORD 'Ftp'

QUOTE
Why ‘Ftp’?
I discovered the artist when searching for synthwave acts for Club Bizarre vol. 11 but ultimately held back my fave song from them (I had heard at the time) for BJSC 124. Some time after I went through some of their other songs I hadn't heard before and this one (plus another called ANSI.SYS (go check that out one if you liked Ftp)) stood out to me the most. I like the blend of fast rock and synthwave, a subgenre I've very much gotten into a lot over the past couple of years.

Posted by: Brer 17th March 2022, 07:52 PM

I remember having a similar unsure feeling about the music video for 'EMPIRE' by Kids Of The Apocalypse in BJSC which also had some disturbing scenes, sometimes such things fit the mood of a song well though. That God Is An Astronaut song took a while to properly get going for me but I was quite into it by the end!

Ahh at MASTER BOOT RECORD just being Dobbo again, makes sense I suppose! This song didn't blow me away quite as much as BAYAREA.BMP but still another banger, am sure it should do well for them again.

‘in the wake of your leave’: I always love songs which have a non-traditional 'flow' if that makes sense - both the verses and chorus for this one are just one long melody which works so well and really endears me to the track!

I'll be honest, I thought Gang of Youths would be a little too known currently for this contest (especially with a veto being infinitely less so, but rules are rules!). It's a great song though, and one I expected to do well as soon as I heard it.

Whoops, I didn't save my votes so I hope they're revealed early to remind me of them!

Posted by: Brer 17th March 2022, 08:03 PM

Breichiau Hir sounded a bit like a Welsh version of Biffy Clyro, definitely an interesting entry and cool to hear another song in the Welsh language (following that one ANi GLASS song from BJSC and that's about it that I can think of x), I liked the chorus a lot more than the verses though.

The sixth song, the sixth twelve-pointer — and now a three-way lead. Are Nuggets contests always this close? Unfortunately for Awardinary, their original choice was vetoed. However, Pool seem to be doing quite well and are just outside of the top ten.

QUOTE
Why ‘Loner’?
I discovered Hangman's Chair via their feature on 'God Says' by Perturbator (from his fantastic album 'Lustful Sacraments' from last year, an all-killer no-filler selection of gloomy synth jams), was curious to hear how they sounded on their own so checked out 'Loner' after it popped up in my YouTube subscription feed and I pretty much immediately fell in love with it from the first few seconds, all about that goth / post-punk guitar tone which is pretty much a cheat code for me (the band seem to be primarily described as 'doom metal' but that guitar riff wouldn't sound out of place on a song by The Cure). Of course the rest of the song is also good stuff, it's all very melancholic and overdramatic particularly with the vocals in the verses but in the best way possible x

speaking of cheat codes, I am a simple song contest voter, you send a post-rock song, I give it high points. I was already really into this one from the understated first 4 minutes being a strange mix of slightly unnerving but also somehow relaxing (I've had a song with a pretty similar vibe as a song contest potential before), but then it kicks up a gear and never looks back, really makes every second of those 10 and a half minutes worth it with that spectacular build *.* also have to love how many different instruments are included from the standard guitars and drums to the strings and of course the massive organ outro. Definitely made for an epic closing track to this edition ~ (and needs to be played very loud xx).

This commentary from Brer is what I really enjoy about contests like this — I find the why almost as interesting as the songs themselves. I love reading what it is about a particular piece of music that people really love or resonate with.

BRUIT ≤ with the absolutely epic 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)' are the first act to receive twelve points twice — although, strangely, they haven't received any other points so far. MASTER BOOT RECORD beginning to potentially pull away from the very close pack?

This commentary from Brer is what I really enjoy about contests like this — I find the why almost as interesting as the songs themselves. I love reading what it is about a particular piece of music that people really love or resonate with.

You're going to be disappointed by mine after that !

Ah Bray behind the post-punk sounding one makes sense! Great stuff clap.gif

Well at least the fans of BRUIT ≤ so far have been big fans, more of those soon please! MASTER BOOT RECORD is a great leader at this stage ofc x

Thanks Chez and Wardy for the few points so far - ngl when I found this song I thought it gave me potential big hit vibes so it is a liiiittle bit disappointing to be stranded right near the bottom on single figures so far oops but still early days I suppose!

Another set of votes — another different twelve-pointer. It seems like Bjork struggled a little with the heavier Nuggets choices this time, although I do think it's been a pretty strong group of songs.

Why 'Invincible Fighter'?
I chose this partly because I was curious if anyone would guess it was me! I actually really enjoy this subgenre of asian anime theme-esque influenced music that I think of as gaming music, and every now and then I come across a new artist that does it really well! I believe this one is also an anime theme but I haven't seen the show.

11 UHSTING ◼ Maria Rodés 'Seguramente Fui Yo’

QUOTE
Why 'Seguramente Fui Yo’?
I sent Tom Morello ft. Phantogram - Driving to Texas which was then sadly vetoed because I really like the somewhat apocalyptic vibes and it definitely moves you in a sentimental way. You also have the grand guitar solo at the end which I think is delivered by Tom Morello. I then opted for Maria Rodes - Seguramente Fui Yo. This song has a unique sound which I believe should stand out in the contest. This folk sound is unlike any I've heard in nowadays music. I like the simple chord progression I-VII done repeatedly in A Aeolian which gets you yearning for more. The main melody is hexatonic though the entire first theme becomes the usual heptatonic later on with the accompaniment. I love the choice of instruments in this song, for instance the lack of pitch when strumming the guitar (I think?). Then goes to a celebratory second theme which pleasantly surprises, and it has undergone modulation to A Ionian. I love the vocals are cheering in the background, making way for the fiddles to perform their part which is similar to the vocal melody in the first theme. Overall I think the song is simple yet effective. The folk sound in particular is a huge push factor for my choice in Nuggets, and the song is also modernized with different experimentations to new sounds and unusual modulations and unique interpretation of the chord progression.

It was a really difficult to select the 12 pointer. I was flipping between the top 2. They both have drawn out deep emotions really well, which is something that rock genre or related has always tried to achieve. The Machine Is Burning slightly edges with a slow but powerful buildup. The emotions slowly sink in and I really like the flow.

That commentary is just exquisite

'The Machine Is Burning (Live)' has some serious stans with its third twelve points tonight — and now it is right back into second place. Gang of Youths continue to pull away, and previous leader, MASTER BOOT RECORD, drops out of the top five.

'ZOMBIFIED' is an absolute banger! Despite some of the lyrics, the lead singer is absolutely *not* a MAGA/anti-woke type. Instead, he's just a bit annoyed at some stuff he posted when he was younger, and I think he's grown a lot since. It's been good to see them transform from pop-punk to metal in the last few years!

Oops — after leading for a few rounds now, WhoOdyssey pushes themselves into second and KennyHoopla into first place.

Also, do I want to look into the lead singer of Falling In Reverse? A few people have mentioned him in their comments...

The Gang Of Youths song is pretty good and all but ngl I do kind of hope it doesn't end up winning here as it does feel far too mainstream for this contest (I'd have thought that even before the chart success / radio playlisting).

16 JADE ◼ BRUIT ≤ 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’

QUOTE
Why ‘'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’?
I finally broke the 10 minute barrier for one of my entries in a song contest! I've never shied away from longer entries in the past, but even so, that's a long time for a song to keep your attention. Especially if an instrumental! But 'The Machine Is Burning' did just that. It drew me in with the initial misleading chilled out intro. Soon the passionate banging away at all sorts of instruments, from the necessary Nuggets guitars to an organ, really moves the song along in an electrifying way, that continues to cover new ground right until the final minute. It's a memorable piece of post-rock brilliance that ignited such a strong first reaction from me that I thought it was bound to stand out. I couldn't let something like the lack of Spotify presence (the only one in this edition to not be on there!) hold this back. I wasn't phased by the live performance aspect either, one of my previous winners 'War' by Brutus was also live, in fact the setting only added to the epic feel. It's magical.

The song that stole my heart and top points had a double-digit duration. I was instantly drawn in with the dark, atmospheric production and strong female vocals. My ears particularly pricked up at the 1:30 mark when she began singing in a made up language. This then led into some seriously towering guitars. It already felt like a big, standout, rush - but there was still so much more to uncover. The instruments just kept coming - with a flute sounding almost as pretty as the softer vocal parts, swiftly followed by the most beautiful piano segment. The song kept looping back to the made up language part so I had a Google mid-way through the song, where I found out about it - also discovering that it translates to "Let us dance around the fire" - which swiftly added some further triumphant context. It is a stunning rollercoaster of a prog-rock song that I definitely won't be forgetting any time soon. Especially as it was accompanied by a haunting visual feast!

is a song even a song if it is less than ten minutes long?, Jade asks. 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’ has been doing fantastically so far — and I do think it was at a disadvantage not being available on streaming services. It was also a complete accident that this was chosen as the final song for the running order — what an epic finale.

Those twelve points push Cellar Darling into the top ten.

17 DHWE ◼ The Hotelier 'Among the Wildflowers’

QUOTE
Why ‘Among the Wildflowers'?
I know it's a little shouty and I took a risk by sending it, but in the end I decided it was worth it bc I am very very very attached to its parent album, home like noplace is there. I was gonna send the closing track bc it's less shouty but i think that song makes more sense as a cathartic album closer and not a standalone song, and I wanted something that would best represent the album as a whole. so I went for "among the wildflowers", which in the emotional arc of the album I would consider to be the peak (along with the part 2/following track "life in drag"). so, the song is the perfect distillation of the album imo: emotionally intense (emo, as it were), tackles a lot of the themes that crop up on the album (gender identity, mental illness, abuse), and it ends on a touching note, the kid being asked what he would do if his friend were being hurt. childhood innocence to contrast the pain and grief that often marks the loss of that innocence.

just wanna start by saying this was an excellent contest! I think it's my favorite edition of nuggets ive taken part in in fact. I'd never heard of gang of youths before this contest but apparently they have a lot of hype (shows how I've been slowly losing touch the past couple years) and I can see why! I hear a little bit of a lot of great '00s indie in this particular song. the rhythm section reminds me a little bit of the national or the Walkmen, the orchestral parts remind me of arcade fire or stars, the combination of that fast-paced rhythm section and the orchestral bits reminds me of los campesinos!, and the frontman sounds a little bit like Paul buchanan from the blue nile to me. very very good

Well, that was short lived — Gang of Youths return to pole position!

Posted by: lewistgreen 17th March 2022, 09:45 PM

It was very poor judgement on my part for sending Zombified without actually knowing very much about the band/lead singer. I just liked how it sounded but I'll accept my scathing fate for it.

P.s. apologies for not voting

Posted by: Brer 17th March 2022, 09:45 PM

Correctly identified that one as dhwe's entry as well, was a shame to not quite fit that song into my votes as it definitely sounded pretty emotionally ~potent~. It reminded me a little bit of Spanish Love Songs (a band I have repeatedly tried to get into due to some massive online hype but haven't quite clicked with me, I think I liked this song more than anything I've heard from them, nonetheless I imagine you'd probably like them if you don't already know of them). Thanks for another couple of points as well.

18 IZZY 💀 ◼Nocturna 'New Evil’

QUOTE
Why ‘New Evil’?
Nocturna are the new kids on the symphonic metal scene, a scene that gets one or two new bands a year if that, so apparently a fairly big deal in symphonic metal subreddits. Their album is, if nothing too original, a good and lively addition to the scene, and 'New Evil' is I think the best on there for its heavy grindy guitars and heavy energy although there's a couple of other good tracks I could have sent.

I couldn't imagine a more post-rock titled song and artist if I tried, but '7 Billion People Alive All At Once' is a great encapsulation of what I love that genre for and its ability to captivate you in a profound soundscape, as if you are lying back on a hill above a city at night and watching millions of people coming and going. The thudding guitars and textless vocals, and build that makes each part sound completely different and yet all very exciting and vigorous, they all make this one stand out ahead of the other, also excellent, post-rock songs in this contest. Great listen.

Big climbs into the top five for both And So I Watch You from Afar and Cellar Darling here — but Gang of Youths remain untouchable.

There were many good songs but my 12 points go to the final song for its slowly building wall of sound, I particularly liked the use of the church organ.

And just like that — King Rollo and Jade trade twelve points. It seems almost unfair to see BRUIT ≤ at the bottom of the top ten when it has been awarded twelve points four times — currently the most of the contest.

Gang of Youths are still number one but the top is beginning to look quite tight...

'DANCE' strikes a strong balance between needed accessibility (memorable melodies, nicely arranged sections) and uncompromised length.

'DANCE' is gifted another twelve and ascends back into the top three. Remember when Dobbo was in the lead at the beginning and then dropped off — well, Dobbo is pissed — and now only one point from the lead.

We also now know everyone who entered the current frontrunners... but which one is going to win? Mishkin Fitzgerald in tenth place is still a mystery — is a surge out of the question?

Rollo as Cellar Darling! Great choice and band, I've been reliving their other material because of sending 'DANCE' <3

The betrayal x

Sorry, I loved the BaNG Dream/J-rock sound (though I've never seen BaNG Dream either), just this coming along with a really strong contest pushed it below my post-rock and emo needs.

Thank you for all the huge points so far, I'm very happy to be doing this well already with Nocturna happy.gif

It was an easy choice to give my 12 points to Bruit. I was enthralled by it the first time I listened to it. Thanks for your 12 points as well. Long song solidarity!

Ooh I was curious to see who sent And So I Watch You From Afar, great entry Mr. bySmashMouth! Really pleased to see them doing so well, makes me wonder why I never got around to sending them myself before but at least someone has eventually haha.

(a New Rivermaya BJSC return after 84 years in the wilderness would not go amiss judging by the taste on display here x)

Exciting to still have so many real contenders for the win at this late stage, a lot of those would be good options.

23 ROB S ◼ Poets of the Fall 'Locking Up the Sun'

QUOTE
Why ''Locking Up The Sun''?
I chose 'Locking Up The Sun' by Finnish band Poets of the Fall because of the cool rocky electronic sound to it. It really sets in motion from that pre chorus part which is actually my favourite bit of the song but the chorus and the whole song is fab too. There's not many of their songs that stuck with me wanting to return to but this one (and the other one I confirmed until I changed to this) was on replay especially last year as it appeared in my top songs on Spotify.

'Seguramente Fui Yo' is my 12 because of how different it was and how instantly it grabbed me from the beginning with the guitar. A lot of interesting stuff musically going on with pleasant vocals and the musical part half way through which sounds like some kind of Irish wedding dance/jig from eons ago. fab folky guitary choice this.

It was an envious lead for a while but Gang of Youths have been dethroned by Cellar Darling. Our eclectic tastes result in another twelve going to a brand new song — Maria Rodés is the lucky one this time.

QUOTE
Why '’Utánad’?
Esti Kornél's been around for a while here, but they are quite a new discovery to me. 'Utánad' was number 1 on my personal chart for some weeks, I was curious to see if this beautiful song could get some fans without understanding the lyrics. (I don't expect much success though).

It was a very easy decision, not even 'Ftp' was really close. KennyHoopla could've been a contender but I've listened to 'how will i rest in peace if i'm buried by a highway?//' countless times, I usually penalize entries like this, I don't like giving max points to songs I already know. Back to TORRES: I loved 'Sprinter' back then, but I think 'Thirstier' is even better, it grabbed me instantly. I'm sure I'm going to listen to it loads in the following months.

..And another song gets their first twelve points of the night — it is great seeing such a broad amount of love being shared around. MASTER BOOT RECORD return to the top (Dobbo supremacy *.*)

25 BLACKSQUARE ◼ CRUMB ‘BNR’

QUOTE
Why 'BNR'?
My taste is always going to lean more towards laidback and lowkey — which doesn’t always work for a contest like this, but I like really how simple ‘BNR’ is and hope it manages to grab some people amongst a group of strong songs. There is a slight trip-hop element to the production which I love, the guitar riff is used sparingly, and I always enjoy an outro with a production switch-up (as short as this one is).

I knew immediately that the heavier choices wouldn’t be for me — as much as I try. I can appreciate them from afar but something doesn't click. It’s baffling to enjoy heavy electronic music but draw the line when a guitar is involved. It's annoying to feel so limited with my taste sometimes. I would say ‘Will You Be? (CFCF Remix)' is probably the most un-Nuggets song for me to choose, but I can’t help it — something a little electronic, nostalgic, easy? I’m all in. It really reminds me of something some indie synth bands would have released around 2007-2012 — which makes me feel extremely old to have those as a nostalgic reference. But it’s wonderful. Did I go and listen to The Teenagers immediately after listening to this for the first time? Maybe.

Well, my votes didn't really change much at the top...

QUOTE
Why 'Generation Wild'?
I've known ‘Generation Wild’ since before I joined Buzzjack. It just has that anthemic quality that I generally want my Nuggets entries to have. I think the chorus is memorable and will make a big impression, but I also think it could be polarizing!

27 SEVERIN ◼ Mishkin Fitzgerald 'Seraphim'

QUOTE
Why 'Seraphim'?
Mishkin is one of Brighton's most accomplished and diverse musicians but something of a well kept secret (she rarely plays locally), and although far from her best, Seraphim showcases her more accessible side, one usually to be found on her solo work. The track was chosen as it provides an easy gateway to her for those who might like what they hear and because she deserves to be heard.

Despite giving it 6 points I don't actually remember the Mishkin Fitzgerald song very well oops, I will definitely relisten to it at some point because I obviously must have liked it a lot to give it so many points - looking back on my comments during the listenthrough I really liked the instrumentation on it apparently.

Cellar Darling is the only one of the 3 remaining contenders that I voted for but the other two were both commiserations, I'd be happy with a KennyHoopla win too.

Cellar Dancing stood out a mile from the rest as sonically more interesting but it's overlong. As to the rest, I'm not really a fan of the kind of Eurovision style metal, gentle alternative tunes and prog rock that made up the bulk, as good as they may be. I thought my top three were decent and I would have put Falling in Reverse in somewhere but just can't bring myself to endorse Ronnie Radke in any way. Sorry to whoever sent that in.

Nothing for Gang of Youths.

Unfortunately for 'DANCE', the eight for KennyHoopla just blocks it from the top.

Congrats RFC cheer.gif I'm fairly familiar with KennyHoopla and generally like what I've heard, this was 11th in my rank. Obviously it would've been great to see Cellar Darling win, my favourite of the whole contest, but 2nd is amazing for it anyway - especially after it took a while to get going on the scoreboard.

My song was never going to have across-the-board appeal but I'm so happy that the people who were into it really loved it heart.gif what a medal haul! Very pleased to have achieved a top 10 placing - I think that gives me a 50% rate of coming top 10 in Nuggets now.

Thank you for the excellent hosting blacksquare! I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and your own comments added in afterwards.

Congratulations to Rabbit! KennyHoopla's song is quite a nice one and one of the very few that I have known beforehand. Whoddy comes at a respectable 3rd! A bit surprised to see both Chez and Jade on the lower top 10... ohmy.gif Expected a bit higher!

I will take it coming mid-table! It's quite a special song and definitely stands out from the rest of the bunch imo. Great to receive a 12-pointer from Roba as well! Bring on Unknown Pleasures as I have a song that I know someone on this forum would definitely hate. kink.gif kink.gif teresa.gif

Thanks blacksquare for hosting! It's really nice to share my thoughts about the votes and why I chose my entry. I should do this more in future song contests here wink.gif Great presentation as well!

That was close! I'm quite happy with 2nd place as I'd won the last Unknown Pleasures. I would have been more disappointed if I had just missed out on that one as well.

Well done RabbitFurCoat on winning the contest.

Thanks to all who gave points to Cellar Darling and to Blacksquare for hosting.

Well 'DANCE' was my favourite of the top 3 so aw at that missing out but all 3 of those were great songs so can't argue with that really.

Probably should have sent the other Poets song now instead as maybe that would have done a bit better. Oh well.

Pools, Maria and CASHDIET too low imo even though they probably weren't going to set the board alight exactly either~

Congrats RFC! I must admit I don't immediately recall it, but it was just outside my votes looking back so I must have liked it somewhat! So close for Cellar Darling, but that's still a very respectable performance. I didn't mind the Gang of Youths song, but I agree with Bre earlier about it being a bit uninspired for this so I think that seems more fair x

Very pleased with another top 10 finish and quite a wide appeal across different voters which is great to see (edit: second highest number of voters yes *.), that's about the same as my last one did so I clearly have a good thing going with these rock instrumentals, maybe I'll actually chance it with some vocals next time? thinking.gif Honoured to finish just beside my 12 as well naturally x

Thanks to blacksquare for a great edition, I really enjoyed seeing everyone's thoughts on the entries, it really gets to the beauty of these contests <3

Aw I was excited thinking Cellar Darling had won for a second there without realising KennyHoopla was also in that top 3 laugh.gif Nevermind, as I said I'm pretty happy with Kenny as a winner as well, congratulations to RFC notching up another win, on a roll recently with you also winning Club Bizarre not long ago! (And looks like this makes you the first person to win Nuggets 3 times as well ohmy.gif)

Thanks Severin for seeing me finish on a high, matching my highest points of the contest and climbing into the top 15 at the last second *.* I had hoped 'Loner' might be at least a top 10 for me but I'll take that after it looked like I was destined to languish right near the bottom of the heap for half of the reveal.

Cellar Darling, MASTER BOOT RECORD and And So I Watch You From Afar all finishing in the top 5 is a pretty solid result, happy enough with BRUIT ≤ being top 10 too even if not quite living up to the win predictions. A couple others in the lower top 10 that I voted for as well.

Thanks for the hosting blacksquare! And I hope it won't have to be another whole year until we get another one of these again this time... whistle.gif

RabbitFurCoat really knows the recipe for success! biggrin.gif I’m glad to have assisted in a marginal way by handing you a single point, but I would have loved to see Dobbo snatch it after leading most of the evening. Thanks for those who gave some points to Pool too. Thanks in conclusion to blacksquare for hosting this contest. happy.gif

Ha! I would have done it sooner but didn't realise I was allowed to — I think SevenSeize messaged at the end of January to let me know.

Hosting these things is fun — but so much work. I'm so impressed by the mods and members who do things like this continuously. I was too drained to even write proper commentary after fiddling around with the spreadsheet and then formatting everything.

(Oh, I'll happily make gifs and headers for your contest RabbitFurCoat x)

Thank you to everyone again who sent me commentary about their choices and favourites — long or short. They make these contests more personal and interesting to me, so thanks thanks thanks x

Congrats RFC! That KennyHoopla song was great, and I'm pleased some other of my faves (Nocturna and Gang Of Youths especially) did well.
I expected a lot lower than 13th after hearing the quality of the other entries so I'll definitely take that! Thanks to all Sigo's voters, I'm glad it found some fans happy.gif great hosting blacksquare, love the artsy vibe of that opening graphic and the commentaries were a nice touch wub.gif

Cellar Darling was winning this right until the very last few votes — KennyHoopla just kept popping up but only Bjork gave it 12. I really thought Cellar Darling had it in the bag for the majority of the time.

Posted by: Brer 17th March 2022, 11:42 PM

Oh yes I enjoyed reading the commentaries as well (although found it mildly cringeworthy reading my own back oops!) so the encouragement to include those was definitely a nice touch.

wig I voted for all the top 4 heart.gif A lot of surprises this edition for me, didn’t expect to like some of these as much as I did! Congrats Rabbit on the win!

FRANK AND JORDAN, YOU ARE LEGENDS *.* I think that’s my first Nuggets top 10 in a looooong time? I very nearly sent “Don’t Go Puttin Wishes In My Head” but thought this one was much stronger. Thanks to everyone who loved it enough to give it points!

Posted by: Riser 18th March 2022, 02:34 AM

Oh wow! I can't remember if I said this already but that KennyHoopla song was a local hit here because Kenny's from Cleveland, so it's pretty surreal to see it win Nuggets. And the Bloc Party comparison mentioned earlier was spot-on! Congrats RFC!

I definitely didn't expect such a poor result for my entry, but no regrets, always good to have a variety of rock styles represented.

Great job hosting, blacksquare, thank you!

'Generation Wild' very underrated, that was a great track! Same with 'ZOMBIFIED'.

blacksquare, thanks for running a wonderful edition, I enjoyed this one a lot. And thanks for everyone for getting me as high as 7th, particularly Dobbo for the 12 - I didn't call doing so well and it's definitely one of my better Nuggets results, glad to see so much Nocturna apprecation.

The winner wasn't that close to my votes, but it's still enjoyable (strong contest), I can see why it won, congratulations RFC. Cellar Darling in 2nd is pretty brilliant, and And So I Watch You From Afar in 5th also great, really loved that one a lot.

Wow what a thrilling points reveal! Many congrats to RFC smashing another contest! Good track which I gave 4 points to.

4th is very pleasing! Having a very strong year so far in song contests with a win, two 4ths and a sixth *_* thanks to those who voted for Ftp.

And a big hand to blacksquare for hosting, bravo!

Oop I misread the post & thought cellar darling won!

Posted by: SevenSeize 18th March 2022, 05:34 PM

awesome winner *.* loved that track for a while, I'm glad RFC finally brought it into one of the contests, congrats! 👏

you smashed it blacksquare great job!

Apologies in advance, but I had a complicated week, so I couldn't make any comments.

Regarding "7 Billion People all Alive at Once", which was the song I gave 12 points, it was a great discovery and was the one I preferred the most. I like how the song progresses and the change it has around the 3 minute mark in tempo. It makes the track to be so distinctive from others.

About "Desaparecer", which was the song I submitted, it's one of the songs which I listen when I feel very low or I am angry with/at something. It's interesting because I thought about it after I submitted "De Música Ligera" in the previous Nuggets edition. Zen is a Peruvian alternative rock band which was very popular around the mid 2000s and it was the time when alternative and rock music were trying to make a scene in the Peruvian market. Surprised my song didn't connect with many of you, but thanks for the ones who liked it.

Anyway, congrats RFC for winning and blacksquare for hosting. You did it great.

Catching up with this, that was a nice surprise! biggrin.gif Been really busy the last couple of weeks so only just getting round to checking these results, think this is the first day for about a week I've looked at anything outside of the Sports forum!

I have to give an assist to this victory to Doctor Blind, it was a song I checked out when he had it towards the top of his 2020 year end chart. It was one of two songs/bands I'd got on my longlist of BJSC potentials that would fit this contest and just decided I'd send one to each of them (although didn't in the end)

Nice to see the songs I ranked as my top 4 finishing in 4th-7th, a very successful contest! They were all excellent, but 7 Billion People all Alive at Once just grew on my that much more. I think they're a band I've heard of but never checked out but probably should do, certainly a sound I'm likely to like!

I must confess I never added Gang of Youths to my playlist as it was the only song I already knew and then forgot about it when putting in my votes, although looking back it would've had probably 3 from me, it's not as good as some of their others.
