It seems like they're getting a decent push...

The Last Dinner Party are releasing their third single 'My Lady of Mercy' soon! 'Nothing Matters' was amazing, although I wasn't quite as fussed with 'Sinner'. However when I saw them live (for free!) a few months ago they had some crackers up their sleeves, so hopefully this is one of them.

Posted by: Severin 8th October 2023, 11:28 PM

Yeah, there's been quite the buzz around them over the last couple of years and I thought Nothing Matters was great in an obviously Abba inspired way. Unfortunately, I've been unable to see them live yet despite several opportunities.

Posted by: Severin 15th October 2023, 06:22 PM

I think this is the least interesting thing they've done yet. Disappointingly ordinary

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 4th November 2023, 11:56 AM

'On Your Side' released a couple of days ago... as well the announcement of their debut album! 'Prelude to Ecstasy' is out on February 2nd.

Tracklisting:

1. Prelude To Ecstasy
2. Burn Alive
3. Caesar on a TV Screen
4. The Feminine Urge
5. On Your Side
6. Beautiful Boy
7. Gjuha
8. Sinner
9. My Lady of Mercy
10. Portrait of a Dead Girl
11. Nothing Matters
12. Mirror

They are gonna be huge! Listening on a loop

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 29th November 2023, 03:44 PM

Nominated for the BRITs Rising Star award now too... hopefully they win!

Posted by: Chez Wombat 29th November 2023, 05:19 PM

I wasn't keen on Nothing Matters, but really like My Lady of Mercy, some great guitars on that one (was actually gonna try it for BJSC, but think they might be a bit too big for that now laugh.gif) and On Your Side has a really nice dreamy feel to it too. Looks like a likely candidate for the Sound of... prize and I look forward to seeing what they can do.

Posted by: uhsting 29th November 2023, 05:40 PM

On Your Side is pretty good!!

Posted by: steve201 29th November 2023, 07:51 PM

Smart move to release the album in Feb considering their Sound of and Brit award noms!

Posted by: Liаm 19th December 2023, 12:49 AM

Nothing Matters is absolutely outstanding, it’s like Kate Bush and ABBA had a baby that was adopted by Florence Wlech, but entirely its own thing at the same time.

Posted by: Bjork 4th January 2024, 01:09 PM

another one...

hate it on 1st listen ohmy.gif goes hides

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 4th January 2024, 02:16 PM

Sounds decent on first listen.

* The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters

added to Radio 1's C-list!!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th January 2024, 01:56 PM

Good to see 'Nothing Matters' at #48 on Monday's chart update! Hopefully it can hold onto a Top 100 position.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 12th January 2024, 07:31 PM

'Nothing Matters' debuted at #71 today.

Posted by: Steve201 13th January 2024, 10:01 PM

Not bad, I assume it only got decent support on Apple and not Spotify?

It was added to Spotify’s Hot Hits UK on Friday

Posted by: Steve201 14th January 2024, 09:17 PM

Finally!

Was decently placed on Apples playlists this week.

Posted by: Roba. 14th January 2024, 09:20 PM

I hope it climbs further. Such a great track wub.gif

Yeah, and now it’s been moved down on Apple’s main one laugh.gif

Typical lol

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 22nd January 2024, 06:44 PM

'Nothing Matters' is up to #52 in the mids!

Posted by: Steve201 22nd January 2024, 07:25 PM

Actually didn’t realise its chart run is 71-71, it held up well on Friday and is rising on Spotify so not beyond the realms of possibility it will be top 40 eventually!

Posted by: Roba. 24th January 2024, 09:21 PM

I wonder if this could sneak top 40 on Friday with it's big jumps the past few days!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 26th January 2024, 07:29 PM

A new peak of #41 today, should be Top 40 next week!

and indeed it will reach the Top 40 this week, as it's at #27 today!

Posted by: jp44 30th January 2024, 07:58 PM

Early reviews for the album (NME, Rolling Stone) are glowing.

Posted by: Roba. 1st February 2024, 02:18 AM

Top 25 secured on Friday then with it's further climb today!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 1st February 2024, 02:03 PM

To quote Football Focus' Garth Crooks, "these fine young women are making really exciting pop music. Lovely Stuff."

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 2nd February 2024, 05:15 PM

I'm up to 'Beautiful Boy' right now and so far I am really liking this album. It's giving me major Marina vibes (and it's largely down to the main singers voice). 'Prelude to Ecstasy' is such a gorgeous intro! Very movie score-esque.

Just ordered the recordstore.com smokey marble vinyl & CD bundle.

Also, GIVE THEM THE NEXT BOND THEME SONG!

Posted by: Hadji 2nd February 2024, 05:49 PM

Nothing Matters at #22 this week but should definitely go top 20 next week thanks to the album effect

Posted by: Mart!n 2nd February 2024, 08:01 PM

Great album 10/10 I can't fault it, some great tracks on the album, Nothing Matters, Burn Alive, My Lady of Mercy, Caesar on a TV Screen, all the tracks are so strong, great debut album from them, should be #1 in the album chart next week without a doubt.

Posted by: Sour Candy 3rd February 2024, 08:14 AM

A good debut album! Surprised that none of the album tracks are charting on AM.

Posted by: gooddelta 3rd February 2024, 09:03 AM

Yeah, a really good album.

Will have to buy it at some point, I didn't pre-order as wanted to listen to it first but I'm sold.

Sublime production, great melodies, and they have a lot of charisma and really stand out in the current industry.

Posted by: All★bySmashMouth 3rd February 2024, 11:07 AM

Playing this album and the vocals reminding me of Marina (+ The Diamonds) at times, that is a good thing. The overall instrumentation is interesting too.

Posted by: Steve201 3rd February 2024, 11:27 AM

I’m enjoying the fact different posters are enjoying it, shows how they are appealing to the mainstream and maybe highlights how it’s sales may be decent this week!

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 3rd February 2024, 06:31 PM

Been listening to nothing but this since it’s release. I’m obsessed rn! Such a breath of nostalgic air.

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 5th February 2024, 01:32 PM

'Beautiful Boy' is so beautiful! That's the most "vocally Marina" track. Also the transition from Gjuha into Sinner is INSANE!

Just such a well crafted and wonderful album! Predicting a decent year at the BRITs for them next year tbh! Hopefully we get some sales info for them today and hopefully confirmation that they have the number 1 album secured??? I can't see any major threats (new or otherwise) so I'd like to think they can end the week with about 16k-20k!

Posted by: SLlewellyn 5th February 2024, 05:45 PM

23.6k in the first chart update, amazing!

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 6th February 2024, 01:38 AM

WOW! They really managed to get the hype for this band PERFECT, didn't they? Deserved wub.gif

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 6th February 2024, 11:29 PM

They were seemingly in the Live Lounge today!

They did 'Nothing Matters' and a cover of Troye Sivan's 'One of Your Girls'!

Just so damn GOOOOOOD!

Posted by: Severin 7th February 2024, 01:11 AM

I've spent a few days with the album and I have to applaud the label's marketing. It's a good album but there are only really 3-4 very strong songs. It's definitely a welcome relief from the usual stuff that gets pushed but it's a very safe, mainstream choice and can be comfortably filed alongside Coldplay and Lana del Rey as not really alternative, alternative music.

Nothing Matters and Sinner are brilliant though.

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 9th February 2024, 09:12 PM

32,846 copies sold for a #1 debut.

clap.gif incredible!

Posted by: Roba. 9th February 2024, 10:52 PM

Extremely good sales for their debut ohmy.gif glad 'Nothing Matters' has a top 20 peak now too cheer.gif

Posted by: Jessie Where 27th February 2024, 10:17 AM

'The Lady of Mercy' has to be my runaway favourite, it's so exhilarating.

Posted by: Steve201 27th February 2024, 05:35 PM

Yeh I think I like that more than Nothing Matters despite the latter peaking at 1 on my PC and the former only at no2!

Posted by: Padamic Tension 27th February 2024, 07:05 PM

Nothing matters has grown on me alot lately

Posted by: Mangø 27th February 2024, 10:42 PM

Both 'Nothing Matters' and 'My Lady Of Mercy' are great, but sadly they're by far the two best songs on an otherwise average album.

Posted by: Steve201 27th February 2024, 11:09 PM

Sinner is a winner too!

Posted by: Severin 28th February 2024, 12:24 AM

In 20 years time (if they are still around) this band will be viewed like Coldplay and this albm will be their Parachutes - Perfectly competent, just alternative enough to be considered alternative, with 2-3 cracking tracks on it, yet they've ploughed the same furrow for two decades without out ever doing anything truly interesting and will be the average persons got to 'Indie' band.

(Except they won't be as popular because they're girls and people in general are narrowminded when it comes to female musicians)

I hope they prove me wrong

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 29th February 2024, 09:04 PM

They've been getting a bit of flack today from this comment:

Posted by: Simon. 29th February 2024, 10:51 PM

Deserved flack, I hope it’s just a silly comment the media have blown out of proportion, but I don’t know.

Posted by: Severin 1st March 2024, 01:36 AM

I don't see anything wrong in that comment by itself.

It's not criticising or dismissing anyone or their point of view. The history of music filled with periods where lyrical content and style focused on fantasy and escapism from awful reality - Glam Rock happened because the Psychedelic counter culture died at Altamont and Vietnam. New Romantic and Futurism happened because Punk's rage and discontent didn't break the social order. Acid House was a reaction to the 80s greed culture, Britpop a reaction against US Alt. Rock's inward looking angst.
They're just saying people want music to distract them from how crap the world is right now. It doesn't mean the band aren't aware of these issues, being from an affluent background doesn't preclude you from seeing the world around you, especially if you're in a band who were very recently playing tiny venues, just means they believe people want to escape the drudgery through music when they can. How is that any different to Bowie or Muse? When Oasis wrote Rock N Roll Star they weren't making a comment about John Major's governments latest manifesto.

It's the same reason why the latest MCU film, good or bad, will always sell more tickets than one from Ken Loach.

I think that's a completely fair point.

Posted by: Brer 1st March 2024, 02:38 AM

I would definitely rather listen to post-punk about the cost of living crisis than any The Last Dinner Party song. But I agree I don't really understand the backlash to that comment, it's a fair point. Maybe not worded the best I suppose.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 1st March 2024, 01:54 PM

Good response from the band today:

It's a shame that the original article took what was said originally out of context- but this happens all the time. I think it's equally a shame that there is this culture of immediately reacting with rage like this. Better to judge someone on their actions as opposed to how they are portrayed in one article and then jump on some massive pile-on just because the music isn't for you.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 12th April 2024, 08:59 AM

‘Sinner’ has been added to the Radio 1 playlist today.

Posted by: Severin 12th April 2024, 10:03 AM

Gotta love Radio 1. Always reliably 12 months behind what's going on.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 12th April 2024, 10:05 AM

I think it's just a case of what the band/their team want to push at the moment, they also started pushing 'Sinner' on US alternative radio stations last week.

Lol that's so not the case. They playlist whatever the label pushes as the current single.

Posted by: Severin 12th April 2024, 05:42 PM

That may be so but they could have playlisted this off their own, when it was first released a year ago. That they haven't done so until the label asks them to, only further illustrates how slow they are with anything coming up on the 'indie' circuit.

Posted by: Mangø 12th April 2024, 09:57 PM

But Radio 1 have never worked like that, they have only ever playlisted "official" singles, why would they randomly start playlisting any old songs now?

Posted by: Severin 13th April 2024, 02:32 AM

Sinner was released as an official single back in June last year. Radio 1 should have playlisted it then as they were already one of the most hyped bands in the country. It was a current single release then and fit all their criteria for playlisting but, as always these days, they're late to react and sadly beholden to what the major labels want, only putting on rotation after the label 're-issues' it.

When any new and interesting band hits the scene Radio 1 are almost always twelve months behind and no longer interested in anything but the most generic sounding releases. Look also at Wet Leg for another obvious example, they were way behind the curve. There once was a time where Radio 1 led the way in promoting fresh new talent from the alternative scene, even if it was late night shows, but that's been pretty dead for many years now in favour of generic stuff like Coldplay. Credit Lamacq though for ploughing a lonley furrow.

There are so many exciting and brilliant acts out there with a large enough fanbase but Radio 1 will only touch it when someone pays them enough to do so. Ask yourself why Sleep Token, Bob Vylan, Wargasm or Kid Kapichi aren't on the playlist despite having a sizeable enough fan base to warrant it.

The Radio 1 playlist isn't picked by a commitee of music fans but by which label is willing to pay the most that month, and the sad thing is that it's stifling some real talent from being heard.

Posted by: Steve201 13th April 2024, 07:14 AM

The daytime playlist will always follow what the labels want released but the evening shows do promote newer music and played Last Dinner Party 12 months before daytime have.

‘Sinner’, ‘Nothing Matters’ & ‘My Lady Of Mercy’ all got a lot of plays on the evening shows in the past 12 months but you are right the evening shows are becoming more generic now. Future Sounds regularly plays pop songs by Beyoncé and Dua Lipa nowadays when back in the day the equilivant show wouldn’t have went near them because they got so much daytime airplays!

To be fair, looking at recent shows, those tend to be played only in the first 15-20 minutes before moving onto smaller acts (and often not at all, usually only when the big acts have new releases out).

Yeh I know Clara was a big Beyoncé fan tbf so she prob had some say in her rinsing of ‘16 Carriages’ but the point remains they wouldn’t have been played even in the first 15-20mins in the past. Guess they moved the evening shows forward an hour so that the daytime and nighttime shows could merge together in the first few hours and drive time listeners may have heard artists they wouldn’t normally have?

I forgot they moved the evening shows forward an hour actually - so it’s still more smaller artists played than in the past!

Sinner was C-Listed on Radio 1 last August

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th May 2024, 01:21 PM

Huh, I'm surprised to find out that this didn't chart in the US. They seemed to have some decent promo in the US, and Wet Let were able to get as high as #14 there a couple of years ago.
