BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Wet Leg - Wet Leg

Posted by: Doctor Blind 25th July 2021, 04:54 PM

The lyrics are filthier than the guitar riff on this but I love it, so infectious. Can't believe there hasn't been a thread on this yet?

Wet Leg are Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers - band from the Isle of Wight, and “Chaise Longue” is their debut single - out on Domino Records.

It's not often we get somewhat known musical exports from the island! Lovely track smile.gif

Posted by: Jester 25th July 2021, 08:07 PM

I love this - really tongue in cheek 90s indie. Could be Britpop!

Posted by: mdh 25th July 2021, 09:45 PM

Eh, I can't seem to get into this even though I really want to like it. It wears its influences on its shoulder just a bit too much for me.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 26th July 2021, 05:17 PM

They've just been confirmed to be supporting Inhaler on their upcoming UK tour

Posted by: Brett-Butler 26th July 2021, 05:57 PM

I first noticed this song a few months ago when it was being hyped up by people I follow on Twitter that I would never have expected to be commenting on new music, which is usually a good sign that it has the potential to have a crossover hit appeal. It's been hovering around the iTunes download chart the past few days, so I think it could turn into an actual chart hit by the end of the year. It's a great little song.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 26th July 2021, 07:09 PM

I'm not too sure how, but it's also at #1 on the Spotify UK Viral Chart!

Posted by: Bré 26th July 2021, 07:24 PM

This is ok enough as a novelty. Not really sure why it's attracting so much attention for a band who seem to have sprung directly out of nowhere though, unless they just scrubbed any online presence they had prior to a few months ago. Highly suspicious xx

(edit: actually they do have some older posts on Instagram and they've appeared at festivals before, suspicion somewhat lessened)

Posted by: Brett-Butler 26th July 2021, 07:53 PM

They picked up a bit of blog attention back in 2019 with a separate song (they made the weekly Fresh Faves on https://freshonthenet.co.uk/2019/12/faves347/, a website I occasionally contribute to, at the time), which I presume garnered them enough attention to get signed to Domino. I presume if it wasn't for the pandemic they would have been building up a live presence over the course of 2020 instead of focusing on recording.

Posted by: Bré 26th July 2021, 09:33 PM

^ with a song that is now scrubbed from the Internet laugh.gif (and Googling it does not bring up very many *ahem* relevant results for fairly obvious reasons)

I'm guessing the label must have instructed them to delete their older music and social media posts (aside from Instagram for some reason) or something? Unless they themselves want that to be forgotten and for them to be judged as a brand new band. It's all a little bit strange whatever the reason.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 26th July 2021, 09:38 PM

I see they performed at a small venue about 10 mins from me just a few days ago! Wish I'd heard about that happening before.

Rhian used to record music as RHIAN: https://soundcloud.com/rhainmusic
and then I believe recorded with fellow Isle of Wight band - Plastic Mermaids. It's getting huge attention probably because of the Domino backing and 6Music playlisting. I love it though.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 27th July 2021, 08:07 PM

The Domino thing has definitely helped them, got some decent support slots and a couple of festivals before anything was out. I do love it, it's the right blend of catchy without straying into annoying and lyrically funny without getting too cringe, the video is good and the guitars are superb.

I am going to have to drag myself half way across the Isle of Wight to see them open the second stage on Day 4 which will be horrendous but worth it as it's a rarity for there to be something on that lineup I actually want to go and watch!

Posted by: Mangø 2nd August 2021, 11:37 PM

This is actually a great song on first listen, I'm not crazy about the band name though.

Have any other musical acts from the Isle of Wight ever charted?

Level 42 are the most famous! They had 20 top 40s and 6 top 10s.

I had no idea Level 42 are from the IOW!

Following the success of their debut single 'Chaise Longue' Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg shall release their second single 'Wet Dream' on Tuesday! Hopefully it'll prove they're not just a one trick pony

Posted by: Doctor Blind 30th September 2021, 03:27 PM

Yes, and here's the video:

Just as fun and insanely catchy as the debut and the iconic lyrics continue! The Buffalo '66 on DVD one especially. biggrin.gif

Posted by: steve201 29th October 2021, 01:20 PM

Really enjoying this band currently with both songs in my PC top 75, the lyrics are brilliant!

Posted by: Bré 29th October 2021, 11:57 PM

'Chaise Longue' was kind of fun but this second song feels like it's already stretching the gimmick too far (and attaching it to a much less interesting song). Eh.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 27th November 2021, 03:05 PM

Wet Leg have revealed in my local paper laugh.gif that their debut album 'Wet Leg' will be released next year... and new music is coming on Monday!

New single 'Angelica' came out yesterday!

Posted by: Steve201 1st March 2022, 10:19 PM

Was waiting for the pre album single to come for a bit now!

Hugely surprised it wasn’t a HR!

Posted by: Jade 7th March 2022, 09:25 AM

I hadn't been getting into them as much as I wanted to so far but my colleague sent me 'Angelica', thinking I'd like it, and he was right cheer.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 7th March 2022, 11:10 AM

I downloaded their cover of Ronan Keating's Life Is A Rollercoaster from iTunes (as I don't use Apple Music), I really like what they did with that.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 7th March 2022, 06:04 PM

Really liking Angelica as well, been meaning to look at them in more detail after all the acclaim and I'm quite into what they've got going on, very quirky and fresh.

Posted by: Steve201 7th March 2022, 11:28 PM

‘Chaise Long’ is a ROTW on R1 currently so may be the pre album single choice and not ‘Angelica’!

Posted by: lewistgreen 21st March 2022, 08:12 PM

Whilst Radio 1 are pursuing the re-release of Chaise Longue, 6 Music have added Angelica to their playlist today

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd April 2022, 10:55 AM

'Ur Mum' is out tomorrow ahead of the album next week!

Posted by: Steve201 3rd April 2022, 11:10 AM

Kinda had the album release as the end of the month so pleasantly surprised to be able to listen to this on Friday!

The guardian *** review with the tagline "absurdist delights and damp squibs" pretty much sums up my feelings for them. Chaise Longue and Too Late Now are both incredible but everything else is just ok and I find myself only listening a few times before not going back to them again. I'll probably give the album a listen at some point but it's not something I'm bothered about hearing. They're going to be absolutely massive but I have to say I don't quite get it

Then again I don't get why any indie band who've got "big" in the last 5+ years have done so really, Fender, Catfish, Sea Girls etc. all sound bang average to me.

Posted by: Steve201 5th April 2022, 08:44 PM

If the Guardian give it an average review I am all up for enjoying it more now 😍

Posted by: Brer 5th April 2022, 08:52 PM

I've enjoyed 'Too Late Now' and especially 'Angelica' more than their earlier singles, I thought they were at risk of being a one-trick pony but these songs have been a bit more interesting to me.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th April 2022, 01:33 PM

The “I've been practicing my longest and loudest scream” line does sound like it’s begging to be used on TikTok...

(Love the song though!)

Posted by: Sour Candy 8th April 2022, 07:28 AM

Brilliant album! Pitchfork gave 7.2

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 15th April 2022, 11:13 PM

And it’s a well deserved #1 album, and Chaise Longue is new at #74! They’re also #1 in Australia.

I still can’t believe a band from the IOW are so massive!

Posted by: Bustin Jieber 15th April 2022, 11:24 PM

I'm so incredibly happy for them. They're fresh, they're different, they're utterly bonkers and it's nice to have an injection of fun being embraced in the mainstream. 💖

Absolutely this.

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th April 2022, 03:05 PM

Whilst the album had hit #1, they've also gained their first official charts entry with Chaise Longue landing at #74 this week

Posted by: Steve201 16th April 2022, 09:15 PM

At last!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 19th April 2022, 09:17 PM

It debuted at #14 in the US, I didn’t think they’d be anywhere near that number!

Posted by: Brer 11th May 2022, 12:31 AM

'Being In Love' and 'Piece Of Shit' are the clear standouts of the album tracks for me (the latter hitting me with the guitar catnip so I am obligated to stan), I also really like 'Ur Mum'. It's all a bit of a mixed bag on the whole though, a couple of the singles were relative duds for me and a couple of the album tracks are a bit on the boring side which doesn't feel like it should be an issue for them but it somehow is. Still, I really liked about half of the album and I'm still mostly just relieved that it wasn't 12 carbon copies of 'Chaise Longue', interested to see how they progress from this as I think they have the potential to make a much better album than this one.

Posted by: dannjohn 12th May 2022, 02:57 PM

i heard 'chaise lounge' on the radio the other day... fantastic song.

they remind me of this Australian band.

Posted by: lewistgreen 14th June 2022, 05:08 PM

It would appear that 'Being In Love' is the next single as it makes its way on to 6 Music's A List this week

Posted by: Jessie Where 14th June 2022, 05:32 PM

Fab choice!

Posted by: Steve201 14th June 2022, 08:23 PM

Yeh the best song on the album not yet released!

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th June 2022, 06:21 PM

However, Wet Dream has been playlisted by Radio X and receiving spot plays on Radio 1 so maybe they're going with that (again)

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 16th June 2022, 06:24 PM

Doesn’t surprise me, I’ve been seeing bits of Harry Styles’ cover from the Live Lounge on TikTok frequently.

TikTok!

Posted by: lewistgreen 20th June 2022, 07:32 PM

Seems they are going with Wet Dream then. A similar situation happened with Chaise Longue and Angelica where the latter was added to 6 Music's playlist over the actual track being pushed.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 20th June 2022, 07:41 PM

I saw them at the Isle of Wight Festival yesterday. It was a great set and they had an absolutely massive crowd!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 1st July 2022, 07:52 PM

'Wet Dream' has now become their second Top 100 single as it enters today at #84. It was also added to HHUK today, so hopefully it can make its way up the chart!

Posted by: WaspBrë 6th October 2022, 11:24 PM

Them to promote a single that wasn't already a single challenge.

(What was the tease of them allegedly pushing 'Being In Love' only to still not push it even after 'Wet Dream' died down... :'))

Also if they really must rehash promoting all of the pre-album singles why did they skip over the 2 best ones... dry.gif (not you 'Oh No')

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 20th January 2023, 08:22 AM

It looks like ‘Angelica’ is the next single as today it’s been added to both the Radio 1 and Apple’s Today’s Top Hits playlists. I wonder if they’ll perform it at the Brits?

Posted by: steve201 20th January 2023, 08:36 AM

Another rerelease!

Posted by: lewistgreen 20th January 2023, 06:03 PM

Radio X adding it this week too. These re-releases of the singles are genuinely clicking with me this time round. Since Chaise Longue went on the R1 playlist last year I've genuinely enjoyed each re-release since and Angelica is up there as one of the best from the album.
