BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Unknown Pleasures II - RESULTS THREAD!
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 16th September 2010, 05:57 PM
Hello all, and welcome to the results of the second BuzzJack Unknown Pleasures Contest!
It's been a close one, and the following three hours promise lots of excitement, in massive contrast to the one horse race we had last time out.
I shall begin the results in approximately ONE HOURS TIME. For now though, ponder the following questions:
How do you think your song will do? Better or worse than UP 1?
What songs do you think will make up the top 3?
Is this all an act and it's not going to be exciting at all?
REMEMBER, DON'T TELL US WHICH SONG IS YOURS OR TRY TO GUESS WHO SENT WHAT
I will be doing the results in the same way as I did before, so the song that was last on the voting thread (this time Mdnr 'I Go Away') will be the last one to have its sender revealed, and the sender of that will have their votes revealed last (will they be the deciding ones?)
Posted by: Dandy* 16th September 2010, 06:00 PM
I can't remember where Magic Kids finished last time but I expect mine to do worse this time than last.
Hopefully Ou Est Le Swimming Pool will be top 3.

Myself, I obviously know the results so can't do any predictions or anything but I'd always doubt I'd do as well as 3rd last time, especially as I never really know what to send. My first choice act had been chosen by someone else and whilst I could've said "they've already been chosen, do you want to send someone else?" I thought I shouldn't as I hadn't decided at the time! Top half will be nice.

OMG ~~~SWOON~~~
Posted by: Hitstastic 16th September 2010, 06:17 PM
I actually have a feeling my entry might finish near the bottom of the leaderboard - nobody has mentioned it when posting their faves which automatically means it hasn't score many points - or indeed any.
Posted by: Dandy* 16th September 2010, 06:18 PM
Yeah, tbh I'm expecting Hits' entry to do poorly also.
Posted by: Suedehead2 16th September 2010, 06:21 PM

I'm expecting my entry to do fairly badly in comparison to Slagsmalsklubben, given it was a bit too poppy (even cheesy) and didn't get a single mention in the voting thread...I'll be pleased with top half!

I'm also quite glad to see that my newfound love for Diamond Rings (which has led me to re-evaluate Wait and See as amazing) wouldn't have changed its position last time around GUILT GONE.

I had high hopes before entering the song, but now I'd just be happy if I beat the 30 points that I got the last time.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll be the only one who gives full marks to the song I have full marks to.

Like this first UP, I will start with the non-participants vote, and once again that's just NickF1. A big thank you to Nick again, certainly nothing wrong with seeking new music! .
Nick's votes:
01 - Thalia
02 - Future Islands
03 - Viola
04 - Valravn
05 - Motion City Soundtrack
06 - The Prototypes
08 - Peter Murphy
10 - Sonoio
12 - Band of Skulls
15 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

1. Motion City Soundtrack 'Her Words Destroyed My Planet' sent by JamesP. The first of 6 debutants, how will Motion City Soundtrack do for JamesP? It got off to an OK start with 5 points.
James's votes:
01 - Wild Nothing
02 - Miami Horror
03 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
04 - Chapel Club
05 - Sloan
06 - Telegraphs
08 - Sonoio
10 - Band of Skulls
12 - Wonder Villains
15 - Aloe Blacc
So the only songs that Nick voted for which recieve more points are the top 3 which changes order with Band of Skulls taking the early lead. They're unlikely to stay there for the next set of votes though, given that song was number 2 on this list. But which person with such excellent taste has sent it?

2. Band of Skulls 'Death By Diamonds and Pearls' sent by RabbitFurCoat.
My votes:
01 - Veronica Falls
02 - Animal Collective
03 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
04 - Future Islands
05 - Sloan
06 - Lake Heartbeat
08 - Museum of Bellas Artes
10 - Wild Nothing
12 - Chapel Club
15 - Aloe Blacc
A consecutive 15 points for Aloe Blacc puts 'I Need a Dollar' top the top. Band of Skulls only fall down the one place as Ou Est Le Swimming Pool continue their good start and it becomes the only song to have scored points from all three sets of votes. 21 songs now have points as Museum of Bellas Artes, Lake Heartbeat, Animal Collective and Veronica Falls all get off the mark.
SORRY PETER MURPHY AND WONDER VILLAINS. BOTH GREAT TOO!

3. Stars 'Fixed' sent by Mikey. Mikey of course looking to follow up an excellent 4th placed finish with Diamond Rings. 'Fixed' is yet to get off the mark though and it's obviously not going to score anything from this set.
Mikey's votes:
01 - Telegraphs
02 - Valravn
03 - Future Islands
04 - Momus
05 - Motion City Soundtrack
06 - Kent
08 - Sloan
10 - Sonoio
12 - Lake Heartbeat
15 - Peter Murphy
No points given to the previous top 3 mean that Sonoio and Peter Murphy move into it after medal position points. Sloan continue their solid start with a third set of points, and there are first points to Kent and Momus.

4. Kent 'Den Döda Vinkeln' sent by Tonyttt31. Tony was surprised with how well his entry in UP1 did, but has said he thinks Kent could finish top 5 or bottom, so maybe nothing will surprise this time?!
Tony's votes:
01 - Lake Heartbeat
02 - Viola
03 - Wild Nothing
04 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
05 - Sloan
06 - Sonoio
08 - Future Islands
10 - Miami Horror
12 - Ghost Society
15 - Peter Murphy
Another 15 points for Peter Murphy sends it to the top. Sonoio overtake the previous leader but remain second. More points for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and Sloan, and the first points for Ghost Society puts it straight into the top half!

5. Miami Horror 'Moon Theory' sent by Casey. 'Moon Theory' seems to be one of the favourites pre-results but it's had a fairly average start.
Casey's votes:
01 - Mdnr
02 - Future Islands
03 - Telegraphs
04 - Viola
05 - Wonder Villains
06 - Sonoio
08 - Museum of Bellas Artes
10 - Stars
12 - Prototypes
15 - Gang Gang Dance
Only one of the top 7 get any points from Casey, that one being Sonoio who benefit by going to the top. Gang Gang Dance and Stars both get their first points with big scores, and Mdnr with a small one. Only two songs are now pointless. Future Islands pick up points again, they're recieving quite a few votes but not anything big.

6. Animal Collective 'Leaf House' sent by Chapstick. Another debutant in Chapstick, Animal Collective not had a particularly good start. Maybe they're too well known and popular for this place?
Chapstick's votes:
01 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
02 - Skyline
03 - Ghost Society
04 - Wild Nothing
05 - Peter Murphy
06 - Mdnr
08 - Prototypes
10 - Bear McCreary
12 - Wonder Villains
15 - Band of Skulls
THANKYOU CHAPSTICK
A 15 for Band of Skulls mean they've now recieved a 15, a 12 and a 10, but nothing else as they move back into the top 3. Peter Murphy and Sonoio swap places again at the top and all songs now have points, an impressive 10 for Bear and a couple for Skyline. Veronica Falls and Thalia are now joined together at the bottom, they couldn't be much more different. The Wonder Villains and Prototypes climb further up the top 10.

7. Museum of Bellas Artes 'Who Do You Love' sent by Broken Telephone (▲▲▲). Ryan is the third person making their debut, and is used to finishing quite highly in these. Middling along at the moment though....
Broken Telephone's votes:
01 - Animal Collective
02 - Stars
03 - MDNR
04 - Veronica Falls
05 - Ghost Society
06 - Miami Horror
08 - Wild Nothing
10 - Band of Skulls
12 - Sonoio
15 - Future Islands
12 points for Sonoio see them become the first act to pass the 50 mark as they continue to swap the lead with Peter Murphy. Band of Skulls get another top 3 and climb up to second. Future Islands first 15 points put them up to 4th and Wild Nothing also climb in the top 10. A 4 for Veronica Falls sees it climb up from the bottom leaving Thalia stranded on her own. Massive shocker.

Well my all time favourite from them is Columbus. Other amazing singles: En himmelsk drog, 747, Dom andra and Musik non stop.
BUT it depends whether you prefer the singles or album tracks. I think Isola is often considered as their best album
I love Isola but I think the single version of 747 is better than the album one

8. Thalia 'Closer to You' sent by Shakilover. First Utada and now Thalia langushing at the bottom, it doesn't look promising for Shakilover but fair play for entering a contest and discovering songs which might not be the thing you'd normally seek - it's good to have some variety and don't get too disheartened about all the Thalia talk. People are naughty you really liked my CD from the CD swap you must have fantastic taste.
Shakilover's votes:
01 - Mdnr
02 - Motion City Soundtrack
03 - Peter Murphy
04 - Viola
05 - Stars
06 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
08 - Telegraphs
10 - Valravn
12 - Wonder Villains
15 - Miami Horror
The Wonder Villains 12 moves them within touching distance of the top 3 whilst the lead doesn't change for the first time in 5 votes. Miami Horror climb well into the top 10 from outside and Valravn move into the mid-table mix with 10 points. Telegraphs and Stars climb a few too.

9. Future Islands ft Katrina Ford 'In the Fall' sent by Medicated Soap. KING of contests like these, Ben always does well and Future Islands have started well so far, sitting in 5th.
Medicated Soap's votes:
01 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
02 - Mdnr
03 - Lake Heartbeat
04 - Band of Skulls
05 - Stars
06 - Miami Horror
08 - Animal Collective
10 - Veronica Falls
12 - Wild Nothing
15 - Gang Gang Dance
The top 3 remain static once more although the gap at the top is now just one point. Moon Theory's ascent continues into the top 5 and is closely followed by Wild Nothing. 15 points for Gang Gang Dance means it joins Aloe Blacc in the top 10, both songs having recieved just two votes, both of them being 15 points - marmite? A 10 for Veronica Falls moves it into the top 20 for the first time. Mdnr keep getting the odd point but nothing much, whilst Animal Collective's 8 means there are now just four songs yet to reach double figures.

10. Telegraphs 'I Don't Navigate By You' sent by Ghosthunter. The Telegraphs have had a reasonable start in 16th, Ghosty will hope they can rise a bit to match the top 10 finish he got with Lay Low in the first contest.
Ghosthunter's votes:
01 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
02 - Kent
03 - Peter Murphy
04 - Wonder Villains
05 - Miami Horror
06 - Momus
08 - Skyline
10 - Future Islands
12 - Valravn
15 - Museum of Bellas Artes
Once again the top 3 remain the same but things are much closer now. No points for the top 2 mean just 8 points seperate the top 6. A 15 for Museum of Bellas Artes moves it into the top 10, and both Skyline and Momus reach double figures. Kent isn't far off now either.

11. Viola 'Fleeting World' sent by SKOB. SKOB wanted to better the 14th place of Midlake last time but it's not quite going to plan so far.
SKOB's votes:
01 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
02 - Kent
03 - Band of Skulls
04 - Animal Collective
05 - Museum of Bellas Artes
06 - Aloe Blacc
08 - Miami Horror
10 - Peter Murphy
12 - Momus
15 - Stars
10 points for Peter Murphy puts it to the top as it swaps places with Sonoio. 8 more for Miami Horror puts it even closer to the top, whilst a 15 for Stars moves it into the top 10 for the first time. A third consecutive 1 isn't enough to stop Ou Est Le Swimming Pool dropping out of the top 10. Kent are now in double figures and Momus climb well out of the bottom 5 with 12 points.

12. Peter Murphy 'All Night Long' sent by Suedehead. Suedehead wanted to do a bit better than he did with Klaus Nomi last time which never looked like getting out of the bottom 5. Currently in the lead, Peter Murphy definitely doing the job!
Suedehead's votes:
01 - Future Islands
02 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
03 - Stars
04 - Animal Collective
05 - Ghost Society
06 - Valravn
08 - Chapel Club
10 - Momus
12 - Lake Heartbeat
15 - Wild Nothing
Not voting for any of the top 5 means Peter Murphy keeps the 5 point lead it had at the top, although Wild Nothing break into the top 3 pushing Sonoio out for only the second time. Two top 3 points in a row pushes Momus into the top half and well within reach of the top 5. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are back in the top 10 with yet more small points.

I'm creeping up the leaderboard very slowly with just a few voters, thanks to SKOB for those points.

13. Aloe Blacc 'I Need a Dollar' sent by Jonny. You can always trust Jonny to send a good song, and Aloe Blacc is finely poised to give him a second top 10 finish.
Jonny's votes:
01 - Animal Collective
02 - Gang Gang Dance
03 - Ghost Society
04 - Future Islands
05 - Miami Horror
06 - Sloan
08 - Stars
10 - Lake Heartbeat
12 - Wild Nothing
15 - MDNR
Wild Nothing jump into the lead after another 12 points, and Miami Horror push Band of Skulls out of the top 3 for the first time in 8 votes. Another top 3 for Lake Heartbeat pushes it into the top 10, and a 15 for Mdnr more than doubles its points and it clumbs 6 places.

14. Bear McCreary 'Wander My Friends' sent by Daniel II. Bear McCreary was certainly something different, just like his Globus entry last time, and I did quite like it. Not doing great so far though, with just one set of points.
Daniel's votes:
01 - Telegraphs
02 - Mdnr
03 - Veronica Falls
04 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
05 - Sonoio
06 - Gang Gang Dance
08 - Animal Collective
10 - Wild Nothing
12 - Ghost Society
15 - Aloe Blacc
As we reach the half way point Wild Nothing build up a lead of 16 points, the biggest a lead has been so far. A third 15 points moves Aloe Blacc back into the top 10 whilst Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Ghost Society and Gang Gang Dance close in on the top 10.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 16th September 2010, 07:46 PM
15. Skyline 'Glass Half Full' sent by Tyron. Following up a top 5 with the bottom 5? Poor Tyrone.
Tyron's votes:
01 - Kent
02 - Future Islands
03 - Valravn
04 - Wonder Villains
05 - Stars
06 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
08 - Mdnr
10 - Museum of Bellas Artes
12 - Aloe Blacc
15 - Miami Horror
15 & 12 for Miami Horror and Aloe Blacc puts them both into the top 3. Museum of Bellas Artes are almost top 10 again whilst an 8 for Mdnr puts 'I Go Away' in the top half for the first time. A solitary point for Kent means it overtakes Tyron's own entry and puts it second from bottom.

16. The Wonder Villains 'Space Jam' sent by Brett-Butler. Brett had a decent finish last time and the Wonder Villains are doing a bit better this time around. I thought it was great, although the vocals at the start are a bit to US Pop for my liking.
Brett's votes:
01 - Stars
02 - Telegraphs
03 - Sloan
04 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
05 - Aloe Blacc
06 - Lake Heartbeat
08 - Prototypes
10 - Chapel Club
12 - Museum of Bellas Artes
15 - Momus
With only 10 points awarded to songs in the top 10 it gives the rest a chance to catch up a bit. Museum of Bellas Artes move from 11th to 5th with 12 points, and Momus and Lake Heartbeat close in on the top 10. A 5 for Aloe Blacc puts a bit more distance between the top 3 and the rest. Brett's votes have pushed his own song down 3 places to 12th.

17. Gang Gang Dance 'Egowar' sent by Harve. Harve sent Gang Gang Dance 9 minute song shocker!
Harve's votes:
01 - Lake Heartbeat
02 - Miami Horror
03 - Valravn
04 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
05 - Museum of Bellas Artes
06 - Wild Nothing
08 - Peter Murphy
10 - Animal Collective
12 - Stars
15 - Future Islands
The top 3 remain the same but Wild Nothing increase their lead at the top to 7 points. 3rd - 6th is now seperated by just 2 points as Peter Murphy, Stars and Future Islands all score well. After great starts Sonoio and Band of Skulls are starting to fall backwards as they reach their lowest positions yet (8th and 10th). A 10 for Animal Collective sees 'Leaf House' clmib into the top 20, the bottom few are drifting further away now.
Posted by: M!key 16th September 2010, 07:56 PM

18. Ghost Society 'Under the Sun' sent by Freeze. Another debutant in Freeze now, Ghost Society is doing ok so far.
Freeze's votes:
01 - Mdnr
02 - Museum of Bellas Artes
03 - Animal Collective
04 - Aloe Blacc
05 - Kent
06 - Wonder Villains
08 - Telegraphs
10 - Stars
12 - Lake Heartbeat
15 - Valravn
A 15 for Valravn pushes it further towards the top 10. Stars reach the top 3 for the first time as they climb to 2nd, just 5 points off the leading song. Band of Skulls fall becomes more drastic as three songs overtake it to push it down to 13th, inlcuding Lake Heartbeat which is now very close to the top 5. 8 points for Telegraphs puts it closer to the top 20 and 5 for Kent moves it out of the bottom 5, being replaced by Viola.

19. Sonoio 'Not Worth Remembering' sent by Chris. It started so well for Chris but after an excellent start Sonoio is now at the bottom of the top 10. Chris will probably just be hoping it doesn't fall much further.
Chris's votes:
01 - Wonder Villains
02 - Viola
03 - Aloe Blacc
04 - Gang Gang Dance
05 - Momus
06 - Telegraphs
08 - Veronica Falls
10 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
12 - Animal Collective
15 - Peter Murphy
With the contest still incredibly close, a 15 for Peter Murphy means 'All Night Long' climbs from 5th to 1st taking back the place Wild Nothing claimed off it 6 votes ago. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and Animal Collective both make decent climbs, the latter into the top half. Telegraphs move into the top 20 and 8 points for Veronica Falls puts it closer to the top 20.

everyone who liked Sonoio, support the artist, his album is brilliant, buy buy: http://sonoio.org/
Sonoio is better known as Allesandro Cortini, member of excellent band modwheelmood and previously a member of the NIN live act doing synths/keys/a bit of guitar, and he played a few dates as part of Muse's live band last year!

I'm not surprised, it's a very poppy track for them. Plus Stars are quite popular among the indie crowd yaknow. I suspect many of the voters who love them may have discounted it for familiarity so it could potentially have been even higher.

20. Chapel Club 'O Maybe I' sent by Severin. The Penultimate debutant is Severin who's sent the lovely 'O Maybe I', a single from earlier this year. I'd hope it would do better.
Severin's votes:
01 - Stars
02 - Viola
03 - Ghost Society
04 - Lake Heartbeat
05 - Telegraphs
06 - Veronica Falls
08 - Band of Skulls
10 - Peter Murphy
12 - Kent
15 - Valravn
With only 1 point given to the songs in 2nd - 8th, a 10 for Peter Murphy extends its lead at the top to 11 points putting a bit of daylight between itself and the rest of the top 5. A 12 for Kent doesn't move it up any positions but it's now a lot nearer to the top 20, whilst a 2nd 15 points for Valravn puts it in 6th, its highest position yet. Along with Band of Skulls, it overtakes Sonoio moving Chris' song down to 12th, the first time it's not been inside the top 10.

21. Wild Nothing 'Chinatown' sent by Thomsen. After a bottom half finish last time Thomsen is doing rather better with Wild Nothing. I was going to send 'Summer Holiday' but I love 'Chinatown' too so was more than happy for you to send it!
Thomsen's votes:
01 - Band of Skulls
02 - Veronica Falls
03 - Sloan
04 - Skyline
05 - Museum of Bellas Artes
06 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
08 - Ghost Society
10 - Stars
12 - Lake Heartbeat
15 - Kent
Thomsen's votes push his own song down to third as Stars overtake. Another excellent score for Kent sees them move into the top 20 for the first time in 17 votes as it climbs above 7 songs. Lake Heartbeat is at its highest position of 4, whilst Ou Est Le Swimming Pool continue to float around the 6-12 mark, climbing 3 to 7th.

22. Sloan 'The Other Man' sent by West. West did OK in the first Unknown Pleasures but after a decent start Sloan have slipped into the bottom 10. A shame.
West's votes:
01 - Chapel Club
02 - Museum of Bellas Artes
03 - Wild Nothing
04 - Aloe Blacc
05 - Ghost Society
06 - Gang Gang Dance
08 - Momus
10 - Lake Heartbeat
12 - Stars
15 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
We almost get our first song to break the 100 point barrier. 12 points for Stars means it's now just a point off as it captures the lead from Peter Murphy. 10 points for Lake Heartbeat push it into the top 3, with Ou Est Le Swimming Pool now only just behind in 4th.

23. Lake Heartbeat 'Golden Chain' sent by Nickthenoodle. Caitlin Rose finished in the bottom 3 last time for Nick, safe to say Lake Heartbeat are doing significantly better and he'll be hoping they hang onto their top 3 position.
Nick's votes:
01 - Chapel Club
02 - Motion City Soundtrack
03 - Momus
04 - Telegraphs
05 - Prototypes
06 - Future Islands
08 - Viola
10 - Veronica Falls
12 - Miami Horror
15 - Peter Murphy
A fourth 15 points for Peter Murphy puts it back into the lead and it also becomes the first song to break 100 points, with 107. 5 of the bottom 8 songs got some much needed points, giving them all a better chance of a more respectable mid-table finish. Casey's Miami Horror takes advantage of the songs around it non-scoring by moving back to just three points off the top 3.

24. The Prototypes 'Cascade' sent by Rooney. Rooney is the last person making their Unknown Plasures debut, The Prototypes might not have fared as well as he was hoping but it was quite different to everything else on offer.
Rooney's votes:
01 - Aloe Blacc
02 - Kent
03 - Miami Horror
04 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
05 - Telegraphs
06 - Mdnr
08 - Stars
10 - Viola
12 - Wonder Villains
15 - Museum of Bellas Artes
8 for Stars means the lead is tied at the top for the first time, and with just 5 sets of votes to go too! The race for the top 3 is getting closer with 10 points seperating 3rd and 8th. Wonder Villains are now on the verge of entering the top 10 again, whilst at the bottom 10 points for Viola leaves the bottom four songs well adrift. Kent, Mdnr and the Telegraphs get closer to breaking 50 points.

25. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool 'Jackson's Last Stand' sent by Josh. Last time around Josh propped up the table as his song finished bottom. Not discouraged he's entered again and doing a lot better!
Josh's votes:
01 - Lake Heartbeat
02 - Aloe Blacc
03 - Ghost Society
04 - Sloan
05 - Peter Murphy
06 - Skyline
08 - Animal Collective
10 - Miami Horror
12 - Veronica Falls
15 - Future Islands
Peter Murphy regains a lead at the top after scoring 5 whilst Stars score nothing. Miami Horror get 10 to get closer to the top 2 and keep themselves in contention. The rest are falling behind a bit now but there's still a huge battle from 4th to 9th. Animal Collective move into the top half, replacing Sonoio, who started off so strongly and have now fallen right down. It has a 12 point cushion inside the top 20, will it hang on? Further down Veronica Falls take a 4 place jump and Skyline pulls away from the bottom 3.

26. Momus 'The Hairstyle of the Devil' sent by Hitstastic. After sending that 'Britney' abomination last time Hits wanted to better this time out, and he has with his song which sounds like the Pet Shop Boys (or does it? Mikey doesn't seem to know!)
Hitstastic's votes:
01 - Stars
02 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
03 - Lake Heartbeat
04 - Wonder Villains
05 - Prototypes
06 - Miami Horror
08 - Thalia
10 - Aloe Blacc
12 - Band of Skulls
15 - Kent
Nothing for Peter Murphy a few points given to the songs directly below, only 7 points seperate the top 3 now and there are 6 songs below with an outside chance. Band of Skulls re-enter the top 10 (yay!) as I aim to be one of 5 people to finish in the top 10 in both contest, joining Casey, Medicated Soap, Mikey and Jonny. A second 15 for Kent should assure it of a top 20 finish, whilst Thalia gets 8 points at the bottom!

27. Valravn 'Kelling' sent by Pavel (Parker). Pavel is doing somewhat better than last time and is in contention for a top 10 finish, but his votes could hinder those chances.
Pavel's votes:
01 - Veronica Falls
02 - Telegraphs
03 - Alloe Blacc
04 - Stars
05 - Museum of Bellas Artes
06 - Wild Nothing
08 - Bear McCreary
10 - Future Islands
12 - Miami Horror
15 - Kent
MIAMI HORROR TAKE THE LEAD! It's still wide open though with just 5 points splitting the top 3. The songs in 3rd to 9th can also theoretically win but it seems unlikely the winner would come from that group. Kent get a second consecutive 15 (what ever was Tony worried about?!) to join Band of Skulls in =10th in what looks like a four track race for the final position. Telegraphs edge past 50 points (can 20 songs make that milestone?) and Bear McCreary gets a further 8 points putting Motion City Soundtrack into the bottom 2.

28. Veronica Falls 'Beachy Head' sent by Grebo69. 13th last time with Gauntlet Hair, Grebo hasn't quite done as well this time but can still get another top 20. Again though, his own votes could shorten his chances.
Grebo's votes:
01 - Wild Nothing
02 - Telegraphs
03 - Lake Heartbeat
04 - Stars
05 - Peter Murphy
06 - Chapel Club
08 - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
10 - Band of Skulls
12 - Ghost Society
15 - Valravn
Oh Grebo you tease! 3 songs, 1 point! IT'S ALL DOWN TO DANDY NOW! The rest are now out of it but Ou Est Le Swimming Pool reach 100 points and lead the race for 4th. Band of Skulls and Valravn could both finish in the top 10 now after high points. Ghost Society move into the top half. Jonny doesn't quite reach 100 points with the rather wonderful 'I Need a Dollar' but 99 points and 7th is still great. Thomsen is now guarenteed a top 5 finish and Kent finishes in the top 10 for Tony after spending most of the time near the bottom. Gang Gang Dance pass 50 points and Sonoio are now 18th (poor Chris, it started so well ). Viola overtake Sloan, but can 'The Other Man' retake a place outside of the bottom 5?!
The question is though, has Dandy actually voted for ANY of the top 3?!

Fixed is an awesome track and definitely worthy of winning this.
I'm pretty sure he found this gem on my personal chart
I did out right awful with my song. But I still stand by my decision to enter it. The Other Man was released in 2001 and has remained a favourite of mine over the years. It still packs the punch it had when I first heard it. Thanks to those who voted for it

Lol at all the Thalia chatter. Thanks Hitstastic and Nick for recognizing latin pop brilliance when you see it. It was such a last minute choice and couldn't decide if one of her spanish songs would do better haha.
I probably should have chosen this classic from her Diamond selling latest album. But i didn't know how a spanish song would fare.
While I liked less songs this time around the songs I did like I like way more!

I imagine Ryan still has a list of the ones that won over on ChC, I think quite a few were female led weren't they? Stars definitely won there as well as here.
Off the top of my head I can remember Goose, PNAU (naturally!), Stars, Alex Gopher and Digitalism winning.

ChC was more electro synth indie friendly. Buzzjack seems to be female vocal led guitar indie friendly. I hope the next winner isn't in the same vein as the last 2 winners. The ChC UP winners just seemed more diverse, imo.

I think the next one will be very interesting with regards to song choices. I am torn metween a male vocal and a female vocal.
Anyone know when the next one will be? How often were they held on ChC?
Posted by: ChapStick 18th September 2010, 03:37 PM
I'm gonna try and make this question not to confusing but say a band doesn't qualify for this used to play under a different name/ had a clomplete different sound before going mainstream would these earlier songs be eligable for entry?

I wouldn't know haha ! From what i listen to though i was thinking like when mgmt used to be called the management and did nerdy synth songs on apple macs or like when billy talent used to be called pezz and did rock/rap very similar to Rage against the machine, completly different to how they are know these days.

ChC was more electro synth indie friendly. Buzzjack seems to be female vocal led guitar indie friendly. I hope the next winner isn't in the same vein as the last 2 winners. The ChC UP winners just seemed more diverse, imo.
What I got lined up is very different, from the last 2 winners anyway mind you it needs to be played loud to get its full effect without giving too much away, I found Stars "Fixed" through West's personal chart, I really liked it and viola the rest is history. You do find some gems by looking at members personal charts, Dr. Blind and Dandy's personal charts I occasionally browse through and you tube some of the unknown acts that I don't know. On the back of Dr. Blind's personal chart I was introduce to Bat For Lashes and The Pains.
No idea who entered Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. Goose definitely won the first one with Black Gloves as I entered it.
Streb sent Alex Gopher didn't he?

Haha. Yes! I always got those two mixed up.

NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD What a blast from the past.
Stars - Going Going Going is horrifically overrated

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head was either Mark or Ben. I have no idea how Andrea Corr won. :|

WASH YOUR MOUTH OOT. They'll never top it.

Did Andrea Corr really win? I don't recall that at all...
Shame on ChC.

I imagine Ryan still has a list of the ones that won over on ChC, I think quite a few were female led weren't they? Stars definitely won there as well as here. Off the top of my head I can remember Goose, PNAU (naturally!), Stars, Alex Gopher and Digitalism winning.
I won the final one with Robots In Love by Beautiful Small Machines (which was female led). The only other time I came top ten on there was with a Hot Puppies song which came 8th iirc.
Posted by: gooddelta 18th September 2010, 07:02 PM
I don't recall Andrea Corr winning either come to think of it It's one of the worst songs on her solo album
Posted by: Hitstastic 18th September 2010, 07:12 PM
My best performance was also in the last one when I entered Sally Shapiro (was beaten by Beautiful Small Machines). Also finished top 5 iirc with tracks by Darude and Beck.
Posted by: Dandy* 18th September 2010, 07:15 PM
Sally Shapiro
edit: it gave away my entry for UPIII!

Was that after I left? I don't remember that.
Andrea Corr won the Unknown Pleasures: Covers competition. Streb wanted to do something different. Who won the language one?

The final UP was after you left - only a couple of months before ChC's abrupt end. Can't remember if it was Mark or dmlaw who hosted it though.

I've always found it quite remarkable how terrible ChC got towards the end. I'm surprised it didn't die sooner than it did. When did everything actually close?

There was a 3 day wobble in November 2009, then it closed for good in December.

I sent that to the one where the results were never revealed, perhaps in Dec 2008 or thereabouts? I think Thom later revealed that it had either won or come top 3 or something but I can't remember. I recall him putting it quite high in his personal chart anyway

Yes it did, with 208 points it was a runaway victory
I don't get what Tonyttt31 is saying its the same as Stars, when the top 3 is very close this time round
I didn't mean that the victory was the same, points wise. What I meant was that the songs dont sound a million miles apart. Vague indie pop with slightly off-kilter, treble-heavy female vocals. But that's just my ears. To others they probably sound completely different.

I've no idea when I'll do the next one, it depends on when I have assignments and stuff due. There will probably be about a similar gap though, maybe end of Oct / beginning of Nov?
Posted by: tonyttt31 19th September 2010, 08:05 AM
That's soon enough.
BTW - I didn't come 11th in UP1 did I?

That's cool. Plenty of time to decide on my entry.

Apologies for not being able to make or vote in this one - I will hopefully be around for III.
Congratulations to Mikey!

There was just so much going on "backstage" between Thom and zigs I'm not at all surprised it ended - it was more a case of wishing it hadn't come to that situation. Me and Dandy were practically running ChC the best way we could in the end. Dandy even contacted Invision to make payment but because it was on zigs name, they wouldn't accept.

I did that one. I knew Rich won it but I couldn't remember what song it was . I think the best I ever did in ChC's UP was second or third with Shiny Toy Guns

Really looking forward to UPIII after not exactly lighting up BJUSC. But then I didn't like any of the songs that much (not even my own song was that great and deserved where it came.)

UP>>>BJUSC, mainly cos of the differnt types of people they both attract, im always gonns pefer the music in UP and not really like the BJUSC music.
i have like a billion song ideas for UPIII

I'm waiting whatever contest starts first (UP III or BJUSC XXX) so that the song i'm digging atm will not be wasted <3
I know why you felt that way about BJUSC Grebo - a big number of good 'indie' countries left.
Posted by: tonyttt31 2nd November 2010, 04:52 PM
I never go near the BJSC

At an average of three minutes per song then, assuming you've heard them all at least once, that makes you over 57,000 years old

I've got a really good idea for what to send to the next UP

Do I have to do anything to take part in this besides send the host a song when the next UP starts?
Posted by: Thomsen 3rd November 2010, 12:54 AM
I've had my entry almost since last UPII but did a rookie mistake. Been listening to the song too much since then and now i've got plenty of candidates. Argh!
Can't.decide.my.entry.
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 3rd November 2010, 09:50 AM
Tomorrow it'll have been 7 weeks since the results so it's probably time for another one. I've not got any assignments due in until December so if I can get this done within a fortnight that would be great, I'll struggle to do one if I start it any later....
BTW, is anyone bothered that it's the same host all the time?
Posted by: Doctor Blind 3rd November 2010, 09:55 AM
YAY. I missed the last one so been looking forward to this.

Well, if you don't want to step back for the next one, i guess there's no need. However it could be interesting to have a new host once in a while.
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 3rd November 2010, 10:01 AM
I was only planning to do 3 (maybe 4 as I'll be free in January) before letting someone else do it. I enjoy doing it and feel I'm quite good at it....

theres no need for a differnt host imo unless Mark doesnt have the time. it's good to have it spaced out aswell so were not rushing into the next one straight after, gives more time and thought for the tracks.
