Sadly I'm not gonna be here for most of them, but when I'm back I hope I've done well! Although last time I entered a generic track, it was Small Black and it finished about 24th ooops.

I'm also looking through my past entries and it appears as though I've not sent an artist containing a female since my very first entry, which was High Places, way back in 2010. Eeeek.

It's probably down to the two contests coming together over the years, when UP was first started it was very much an alternative to BJSC. In the first contest only a handful (me, Ben, Mikey, Casey, Tyron, Harve) of the 26 entrants were regular participants in BJSC. Now there are probably about the same amount of people who've entered this who aren't BJSC regulars.

I like to stand out! The ironic thing is that it was one of the most indie (well mournful indie-ballad) songs there! In CHC Unknown Pleasures, or the first 5 BJ editions it would have been fairly par for the course, but in this new-fangled Unknown Dance/Electronic Pleasures, I can see how it sticks out



It was top three in my chart last month, although I wasn't posting it on here at the time so I guess everybody missed it I found it to be a really affecting and lovely song, but I can see why it wouldn't appeal to some.

Absolutely fantastic winner, really deserved. Good runner up too.

Pleased to be top half with over 100 points as it really didn't look like I'd get near. Never thought 'Head' would be considered cheap though, produces no results on hypem, they have barely 200 last.fm listeners and combined soundcloud/youtube hits was less than 10k. I really don't see any issue with that.

Was holding my breath there, but massively chuffed with 4th, thanks so much to everyone who voted. Best I've ever done in any song contest I think (well, except my 2nd place in Nuggets I guess). I must have had quite the late surge!

From what I remember, that's a really great top 10 and a predictable but great winner, congrats to leww! Shame Yumi slipped quite a bit in the end though...

The fact that there are some who write 'voted' the day after the songs are revealed should hint that the early editions, where 'growers' had just a slight chance of doing good, are long gone..

To be fair, that's always happened. I hosted the first four contests and you always get 2-3 in the first 48 hours. Also, I voted at 9:11pm the day before the deadline (which was after the initial deadline here) and I was still one of the first half to vote, so that's not really a reason to be honest. At least 2/3 of people give plenty of time.

i think at some stage you need to reconcile yourself to the fact amongst indie/alt fans that is very much the kind of music that is in. i don't want to patronise and disrespect but this is very much the sort of stuff that young people who like music away from the mainstream are into. trends and times will change but for the moment this is a reflection of what people are liking.

admittedly i would like to sort of alter the rules. i find it a little bit offensive to an extent individuals participating in an indie competition who i don't believe have ever posted in this forum. are those individuals just here to participate in the competition. i don't want to be in a position saying who and who cannot enter in the competition (because at the end of the day who am i to say that?) but please don't come into this forum guys with the intention of just seeking glory. this forum is currently doing the worst out of all the main genre forums yet seems to have the most dedicated fanbase. i can't keep things afloat alone. if you guys could all try and put some of the energy you have into entering this comp into posting elsewhere i think that'd be really good for the forum.

0 points ouch. Guess I deserved that for not voting though, had master's thesis deadline 12 hours after the UP deadline, so it got sort of pushed out of my focus.

Think this edition of UP might be my cue to leave the competition. The winning song didn't make it through its first play without being removed from my rotation, whereas one of my favourite songs for the last few years ended up getting 2 votes, thanks to Brett-Butler and Popchartfreak though.

Although I was sure I had participated in my last UP as the the format and quality of this thing has turned completely different (and worse) from what it used to be, the editions held in the summer holidays tend to be a tad better. I guess people have more time to listen to the songs and who knows.. People might enter something with 'growing potential' rather than boring electro-pop.

I think I have a decent song ready and will probably enter eventually..
