Well it's no sooner than the gap between AGLM and GGGB. 'Break It Off' was Top 20 in the US when Umbrella premiered! biggrin.gif

I wonder if the red hair look will be a key feature in this era? thinking.gif

By Ryan Love, Entertainment Reporter

Rihanna's new single will reportedly premiere next week.

Earlier today, it was reported that the singer's new release will be called 'Only Girl' and will be the first track lifted from her fifth studio album.

A message on The Big Top 40's Twitter account revealed that the song will premiere next Tuesday.

"New Rihanna song details for those who've asked. It's called 'Only Girl'. It's big and dancey and it gets released to UK radio stations Tuesday," it said.

OMG sooner than expected. ohmy.gif Seriously can't wait now w00t.gif

She really rushed through the new album

Posted by: Mikal 25th August 2010, 11:17 PM

No more so than... ALL her albums?! They've all been rushed... and the last 2 you'd never have thought it.

She's brilliant at releasing material fast AND in high quality.

Well If It's Lovin' was released in November and SOS was out in Feb in the US.

Break it Off was released Dec 2006 in US with Umbrella premičring Feb 2007.

'Rehab' was released December 2008 and Run This Town tide her over till early Sept 2008. Then 'RR' was premiered in Oct 2009.

She's never really had a break!

Apparently its a double a-side. The UK gets 'Only Girl' and the US gets 'Cheers' :S

Oh no! Not a Sasha Fierce type of era sad.gif

Also Rihanna shot the album cover yesterday. biggrin.gif

Well "Break It Off" was only a radio hit, she did not actual promo for it. So that's why that break seemed longer. And being a featured artist doesn't count, otherwise you could say Justin Timberlake hasn't breaked in the music industry as he's always a featured artist.

Posted by: Mikal 27th August 2010, 02:06 PM

Well it doesn't matter, 'Hard' won't be a hit, and Te Amo is out of the charts now as well...

EUGH, why can't artists just release one single at a time? I realy hope they don't ruin this era like they did with Rated R by confusing (and ridiculous) single release strategies wacko.gif

Posted by: eJackulate 27th August 2010, 06:54 PM

Wasn't keen on the "Rated R" era, but I'm really looking forward to this. Shame I'm away next week, and won't be able to hear it until I get back sad.gif

She tweeted this to Ryan Seacrest about an hour ago -

@RyanSeacrest Soon! In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special, and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I'm the only girl in the world!

So 10 days or so we will hear it, and I'm assuming its going to be 'Only Girl'

There’s been a lot of rumors floating around in a very short space of time regarding Rihanna’s new single. First it was “Only Girl”, then it was “Cheers”, then there was a release date, etc etc. Well, now we’ve got the official word from the reliable radio website All Access, who report that Rihanna’s song “Only Girl (In The World)” will impact radio on September 14. {via}

Rihanna even Tweeted radio host Ryan Seacrest about the song, after he asked her when he would be getting some “new music”.

“Soon! In less than 10 dayz ima send u sumn special, and ur gonna play it OVER and OVER, like I’m the only girl in the world!”

Just from the title alone, it already sounds super catchy.

It’s also been confirmed that The Runners produced another new Rihanna song called “Cheers”, which was recently rumored to be her first single.

Currently, Rihanna is over in Hawaii filming for her role in the upcoming $200 million dollar science-fiction epic, Battleship. She’ll be there for two weeks filming, which coincides with the September 14 release date of “Only Girl (In The World)”, meaning that as soon as she wraps up the movie, she’ll be straight on a plane to premiere the song and start promotion.

At this rate, Rihanna is gonna snatch the crown for the hardest working woman in pop!

w00t.gif Cant Wait! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 3rd September 2010, 10:29 AM

From Ryan Seacrest's official website -

The wait for new music from international pop star Rihanna will be over in a matter of days, as RyanSeacrest.com will have her new single "Only Girl (In The World" on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 3AM PT/6AM ET.

The song is produced by Stargate, the Grammy-winning Norwegian producing team who previously produced Rihanna's smash hits "Please Don't Stop the Music" and "Hate That I Love You."

An iTunes arrival date and album release date are yet to be confirmed, but word within the music community is that "Only Girl" is an undeniable smash hit.

JustJared.com reported that an industry insider says, "The song is electrifying and explosive."

If that isn't enough to whet your appetite, we don't know what is! Check back here on Tuesday after 3AM PT/6AM ET for the song in all its glory!

I got some news for you guys happy.gif

Rihanna was on RihannaDaily chat last night ohmy.gif she came by surprise and told us some news about her next record and other things wub.gif

-Only Girl (In The World) is even dancier than Rude Boy.
-Her new album is FINISHED .
-Her new fregrance will be called Reb'L Fleur.
-The new album is not similar to GGGB, something very new as we are used to it.
-Shes working on her film Battleship as we already knew.
-She will return and chat again on RD.
-She will not attend the VMA's because there's no reason to go there [she is cleary p*ssed at them too laugh.gif].

There was a picture on twitter that printscreened what Rihanna wrote but RihannaDaily moved it somewhere. I missed the whole thing by 30 minutes sad.gif can't wait till she's back on chat again, what a lovely surprise heart.gif

Posted by: Jack 5th September 2010, 05:43 PM

Haha, I love it when she goes all diva wub.gif Tbh, the VMA's are basically Lady GaGa Appreciation Awards - no one else really needs to be there other than her heehee.gif. Rihanna deserved one for 'Russian Roulette' - that video was incredible imo.

Oh and I'm SO excited for new RiRi. Got a feeling she'll be even bigger with this era! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Arrs 7th September 2010, 10:17 AM

Quite a typical production from Stargate, the snippet's quite good but I need the full song obviously. For now I rate it as 7.5/10

I really like it biggrin.gif the best snippet of the past few days. Hopefully this opens the door for more dancey music to be successful in the US.

I don't know. I want to hear it in HQ before properly judging it though.

Amazing. Song of the year. Just brilliant. I didn't know Rihanna's voice was so powerful. Wow GO RIRI!

Posted by: Mikal 7th September 2010, 01:06 PM

^ The full is out!

Posted by: Jim. 7th September 2010, 01:09 PM

On first listen...very disappointing.

Generic production and the shouty chorus is a bit grating.

Posted by: Jark 7th September 2010, 01:13 PM

I don't know what some of you are on...

It's alright but it certainly isn't song of the year. The production is REALLY generic (shockingly so) and the middle 8 might as well not exist. The verses are the best bit because the production on them sounds like it comes from a different (better) song.

I'm really surprised you all love it. It just sounds like a Guetta rip off.

Posted by: eJackulate 7th September 2010, 01:14 PM

A bit repetitive, and I think it's her vocals on the chorus that I'm not keen on, but it sounds like a grower and I think it is a major improvement on the "Rated R" era.

Posted by: Steve D 7th September 2010, 01:15 PM

I love it but it certainly isn't song of the year and it is generic.

Although it isn't what I would have hoped for Rihanna's 5th album i still really like it.

Posted by: Mikal 7th September 2010, 01:16 PM

It's no more generic than 'Don't Stop The Music', 'Take A Bow', 'Hate That I Love You' etc...

Posted by: Munk 7th September 2010, 01:20 PM

Just heard it on Radio 1 w00t.gif

Posted by: Dré 7th September 2010, 01:26 PM

Sounds like Cascada circa 2006, and the chorus reminds me of Stereo Love.

Not a fan. The verses are dull, and the chorus is far too repetitive

QUOTE(Mikal @ Sep 7 2010, 02:16 PM) *

But she moved away from the generic stuff during Rated R which was largely original sounding (Te Amo aside).

Also DSTM is not particularly generic and this isn't 2007 anymore. The bangy bangy bit in the chorus bit is like every Guetta song from the past 12 months!

Posted by: Neil 7th September 2010, 01:39 PM

Can't wait to listen to this when I get home from work!

Posted by: Cremey 7th September 2010, 01:40 PM

In my opinion, the Rated R era really showed her artistic creativity etc. and judging from this song it looks like she's taken a step backwards.
I'd far rather another 'Russian Roulette'. Although I guess this'll achieve more chart success and sales probably.

Posted by: Poker Face 7th September 2010, 01:43 PM

It's amazing w00t.gif I'm so excited.

Posted by: Jonjo 7th September 2010, 01:51 PM

Its brilliant! Different from other Rihanna material, which is what we expect from Rihanna when she releases a new album. Itl smash big tiiime i think! But whether the album will be as good as Rated R, well that obviously, remains to be seen!

Posted by: Acoustic 7th September 2010, 01:55 PM

It's OK, just sounds like a David Guetta song though - nothing that original about it. I think the chorus is too repetitive and a little annoying. wacko.gif
I do quite like the verses and her vocals are great.

Wouldn't jump up and say it's the song of year.. rolleyes.gif

Posted by: Aled. 7th September 2010, 03:06 PM

I really like it, though this is really what I would have expected to follow on from Good Girl Gone Bad, not from RR because really in terms of the creativity and originality it's a huge step-back for her.
Tragically though I think I prefer it to the majority of teh RR material (bar the complete brilliance of Hard and Cold Case Love of course). I do feel in a few weeks time though when Radio starts bumming it and you wont be able to escape it, I will be sick to death of it.

Yeah it's a grower, I just wish the verses lasted longer as they're much more appealling than the chorus production-wise and the chorus is overlong.

Totally agree. It's a nice song but not outstanding by any means. It's a HUGE step down from the whole 'Rated R' era which was her best IMO in terms of originality and innovativeness.

Posted by: Theo. 7th September 2010, 07:33 PM

On first listen: meh. It starts off alright with that obvious rip-off of 'Sexy Bitch' backing music, but that chorus is far too nasal for me. puke.gif It does sound like it'll grow though, so I'll reserve final judgement for now.

Posted by: Jonjo 7th September 2010, 07:39 PM

What?? 'Rude Boy' and 'Russian Roulette' are being classed as two of her worst singles?? Have you all forgotten 'We Ride'? Lol

But, yep im still loving this. Hope its a big hit for her.

Posted by: Silas 7th September 2010, 07:44 PM

I'm with James, i didn't think Rated R was up to the standard of GGGB, i prefer this style of music from her.

Posted by: Nick F1 7th September 2010, 07:44 PM

We Ride is wub.gif
This now sounds to me like Commander part 2.

Posted by: XXXO 7th September 2010, 07:45 PM

Don't like Only Girl. In the past Rihanna sometimes knew to get to me with some of her songs (and Rude Boy is really the greatest example of this), but this song is really bad. She's trying to mix some trance with a very popbeat and they don't go together if you ask me.

Besides, I'm sick of all these wannabe dance songs too, it's been done.

Posted by: Tyron 7th September 2010, 07:58 PM

Rated R was fantastic. This is ALSO fantastic. Not gonna lie, 2010 just became ever so slightly better.

Posted by: Slowpoke 7th September 2010, 08:39 PM

lol 'Fireworks' rehash. I hate the bits where she goes "like I'm" over and over. Verses + Bridge = <3. Chorus = shouty, repetitive and unoriginal.

Posted by: buzz_person 7th September 2010, 09:37 PM

Somebody beat me to it!

Anyways, the song is great. I predict a surefire number 1.

Posted by: slowdown73 7th September 2010, 10:49 PM

I wasnt keen on rated r, although I liked the singles apart from rude boy. good girl gone bad really shone for me though.

That said, it does grow on each listen, the best bit is towards the end. wub.gif

It doesn't sound like Sexy Bitch OR Commander. It doesn't really even sound like Firework.

It DOES sound like Million Dollar Girl (Trina ft. Keri Hilson). No bad thing.

Posted by: Tyler 8th September 2010, 04:34 AM

The chorus is annoying. Her voice... it is grating my nerves.

I love the verses, maybe it will grow.

The verses are just 'Disturbia' as is the middle 8..."thief in the night"; would be funny if the thing didn't sound like 'Disturbia' in the first place wacko.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 8th September 2010, 03:27 PM

Only just heard it (my internet has been down sad.gif ) but I love it! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Daniel II 8th September 2010, 05:06 PM

I'm not understanding some of the sensationalist hate on here, by no means is this her worst single, the dreary I Hate That I Love You and Rehab or the dated We Ride are far worse than this. I can see what people are saying about the vocals being grating, but I've always like the tone to her voice so that's not a problem for me. It it is a competent dance-pop song, by no means is this life changing, but it still makes me want to bop my head and get up and dance, so in my books that's a good thing. It is the in-sound at the moment, and with Rihanna's name of course still holding a lot of power, this should be a smash. While I like it at the moment, the lack of anything special means I will probably grow out of it way before commercial radio start bumming this to death.

Posted by: slowdown73 8th September 2010, 10:18 PM

Just heard her new song today. It's not bad, different to what I expected but think it will grow on me. Sounds more dancey and less of a hard edge but still fitting in with her urban pop sound.

I just have to share this, its from Rihanna's newsletter

"Only Girl (In the World)" is Out Now!
Rihanna's brand new song, "Only Girl (In the World)" has premiered and is available to listen to right now on RihannaNow.com! it was produced by Stargate, the Grammy-winning team that worked with Rihanna on "Irreplaceable," "Hate That I Love You" and "Don't Stop the Music." This track is sure to be one of the hottest dance tracks of the fall and will be available soon at iTunes -- visit RihannaNow.com for emerging details.

Irreplaceable? laugh.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 10th September 2010, 04:08 AM

LMFAO at that error! Beyoyo will not be pleased! HA!

That cover looks nice enough I guess. Although the R looks cheap and tacky.

Posted by: Doug 10th September 2010, 03:48 PM

I love the 'R' tongue.gif it keeps the style of the last one, yet is less dark-looking.

Posted by: Steven. 10th September 2010, 04:30 PM

I love the cover! The 'R' is a bit 'mehh'. I'd rather something totally different to seperate this era from Rated R, but anywho!

Love the song wub.gif No doubt a #1!

Posted by: Jake !!! 11th September 2010, 01:42 AM

The 'R' is cool. Just proves how big/magnetic woman she is. She doesn't need her name ALL OVER THAT COVER THERE COZ ITS RIHANNA. You recognice her by face, pseudo-iconic. Very cool.

Posted by: Vülker 11th September 2010, 03:49 PM

It's too generic.
Sounds like a Ministry of Sound minor compilation track from 2004. Too bad Americans think this is the new sound to go for.
Rihanna had her own sound with Rude Boy and Hard, she should've gone that route instead of jumping on the David Guetta bandwagon.
Yesterday I had Capital streaming upstairs and Only Girl came up and I was like "Oh God, Rihanna is screaming in my room..." The chorus is that screamy. I hope Cheers is much better.

They usually do this in the US don't they? It's not unusual for a song to be released to iTunes very soon after it's radio premiere.

Yes, I think it's normal in the US. In my opinion, this is better because it could stop less people downloading illegally, as it is available straight away. People in the UK might not want to wait a month until release date. And I think it could make the charts more interesting/unpredictable, as there probably wouldn't be any songs debuting at #1.

Posted by: Jonjo 12th September 2010, 01:50 PM

OMG. Sorry i'm incredibly late, but this passed me by as a Stargate production! LMAO! mellow.gif Don't they usually stick to one particular sound and just tweak it a tiny bit with each of their own releases? Now they're attempting to copy Guetta. Woo for Stargate tongue.gif

I don't think Glee will be much of a competition tongue.gif they'll hang on top for a day or two then fall off quick and Rihanna also has a big advantage over them since she has airplay which is over 40 million now happy.gif and Glee doesn't benefit from airplay.

I was quite surprised they didnt mention who was on next weeks X Factor at all, not even mentioning that Cheryl was performing.

I guess in theory she may perform in mid November but then with quite a few acts probably performing then including Westlife, Take that, JLS, Subo, Alex Im not sure when she'd be on.

I'm just now hoping she performs on the 31st, Cheryl will definately go #1 in the first week, I just hope Rihanna can climb the following cry.gif

So i heard the song for the first time today.

It's alright i guess.

In terms of eras... Rated R >>>>>>>>>>> GGGB >>>>>>>> Loud >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1st era.

However i liked more songs from the GGGB era ohmy.gif

This is a rather epic 'classical' Escala type cover of the song;

love it wub.gif the generic Guetta-esque production put me off Only Girl for ages, but there's actually a really strong pop song behind it and oddly, this version has made me appreciate the original more.

A classical version of anything is better than the original. True story.

Posted by: Lukuzz 20th October 2010, 06:03 PM

So is she performing it on the 31st because it was confirmed that she was performing wasn't it?

Posted by: JARK 21st October 2010, 09:42 PM

Perhaps we could just wait and see!

Posted by: WillR0713 21st October 2010, 10:05 PM

She's performing on the 14th of November (a day before the album's release). I got it from her newsletter happy.gif

I'm guessing she's performing on that date so get attention on the album. I hope 'OGITW' could still make #1 by that time (if it was blocked by Chezza drama.gif)

Posted by: Jack 22nd October 2010, 02:00 AM

This sounds AMAZING in a club. Fact.

Ooh, hopefully she will do a mash-up of Only Girl and What's My Name

Posted by: slowdown73 24th October 2010, 09:19 AM

Does anybody have tracklisting for the cd single in uk?

Posted by: Lukuzz 24th October 2010, 09:45 AM

The bside is just an instrumental of Only Girl

Posted by: Jack 24th October 2010, 01:20 PM

What a copout!

Looks like this is going to be another #02 for Rihanna, beaten by the ever overrated Cheryl. sleep.gif

Posted by: WillR0713 24th October 2010, 02:33 PM

#5 on iTunes now happy.gif while Cheryl is #1 sad.gif

I hope somehow Rihanna will still get to #1 even though Chezza has an X Factor performance tonight.

Posted by: WillR0713 24th October 2010, 07:58 PM

Dermot just said Rihanna was on X Factor next week ohmy.gif but on her newsletter it says November 14? unsure.gif

Posted by: WillR0713 31st October 2010, 08:33 PM

Her performance on the X Factor was amazing wub.gif

laugh.gif at the food fight that was happening at the back

heart.gif I love her

Posted by: Silver Rocket 2nd November 2010, 12:02 AM

I have to admit, this song is really growing on me now. It's still a long way off being her best though.

Posted by: Aphrodite 2nd November 2010, 01:58 AM

Going by i tunes i think its gonna climb to number 1 this week.

Posted by: Aidan 2nd November 2010, 07:41 AM

That was pretty certain throughout most of last week tbh. tongue.gif

Posted by: WillR0713 2nd November 2010, 05:45 PM

Posted by: Robot 7th November 2010, 07:00 PM

As predicted, Rihanna has herself another #1! w00t.gif

Posted by: WillR0713 7th November 2010, 08:14 PM

1st week: 126k
2nd week: 134k

Overall (after 2 weeks): 260k

cheer.gif AMAZING SALES for Rihanna happy.gif

Hoping 'Loud' will be able to reflect 'OG' success!

Posted by: Kieran. 7th November 2010, 10:01 PM

I really can't see Loud debuting at #1 because of Take That etc. Defiantly a number 2/3 peak is certain though.

Posted by: WillR0713 7th November 2010, 10:04 PM

#1 seems impossible during November/December but I guess what matters most is that it sells alot and becomes stable in the Top 10. happy.gif

Posted by: Liam...! 7th November 2010, 10:18 PM

So great for RiRi!!!!

Posted by: Hands All Over 9th November 2010, 06:16 AM

This is still my favorite from Loud. wub.gif It's right up there with Disturbia as my all-time favorite Rihanna songs.

Posted by: Ljósiđ 10th November 2010, 02:40 PM

OMG I am buzzin' about this song now, so catchy. <3 Probably in my Top 3 Rihanna songs, behind Umbrella and Disturbia.

Posted by: Jack 10th November 2010, 03:45 PM

Looks likely to be #01 again this week! biggrin.gif Against Take That too, who would've thought!

This years 'Fight For This Love' I think

Posted by: Lukuzz 10th November 2010, 04:49 PM

Hoping it sells another 100k aswel this week! biggrin.gif

Posted by: WillR0713 14th November 2010, 11:23 PM

Remains #1 for a second week happy.gif

Chart run: 2-1-1

Sales:
1st week: 126,000
2nd week: 134,000
3rd week: 93,000

Overall: 353,000 in three weeks heart.gif

Posted by: Jack 15th November 2010, 05:50 PM

That's amazing. Wonder if it'll become Rihanna's biggest seller!

Posted by: JARK 24th November 2010, 02:30 AM

Sorry to be PICKY but could somebody remove 'single news' from the topic title? Taaaa.

This is up to #1 on the new Hot 100 as confirmed by Ri on twitter. FABULOUS.

Posted by: Mikal 24th November 2010, 01:36 PM

She now has 9 US #1s to her name... christ!

Posted by: Jack 24th November 2010, 02:18 PM

Woah, really didn't think it'd get to #01! ohmy.gif Go RiRi, she's on FIRE this era!

Posted by: Lukuzz 24th November 2010, 02:41 PM

Mad that 'Whats My Name' got there first but either way WOW this Era is doing amazingly!

Posted by: Aidan 24th November 2010, 08:52 PM

Go RiRi! This era is shaping up to be her biggest yet! cheer.gif

Posted by: Propilot87 25th November 2010, 05:14 AM

Whoa i didnt think she was going to get #1 with this ohmy.gif which would have been a crime since this is way better than What's My Name.

Apparentley this is the first time in hot 100 history where a debut single hit #1 after the second single did.

Posted by: WillR0713 4th December 2010, 08:29 PM

One Direction just performed this on X Factor laugh.gif

Hopefully gonna give the song a big boost happy.gif

Posted by: ChrisGaGa 4th December 2010, 08:30 PM

Still really loving this song. wub.gif

By far one of the best songs this year. heart.gif Never gets old. happy.gif

Posted by: ukchartstatsfan 23rd April 2011, 01:42 PM

Posted by: Cremey 5th December 2011, 11:26 AM

Passed 1 million sales in the UK this week! biggrin.gif
(Overall UK sales now stand at 1,000,514)

Hoping 'We Found Love' can do it too.

Posted by: jlj 10th September 2020, 02:03 PM

Wow! TEN years since Rihanna’s biggest UK era to date was launched with this now iconic track!

What’s people’s thoughts on this ten years on?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 10th September 2020, 02:34 PM

I really thought of this as being totally average and run-of-the-mill for quite some time, but it really has become a classic and taken on a life of its own over the last decade.

Shame it couldn't have prevented 'Promise This' from ever reaching #1.

Posted by: Klumzee 10th September 2020, 02:57 PM

A massive track back in 2010 but it doesn't sound quite as good nowadays! I think Rihanna topped it with We Found Love for songs of a similar genre so this isn't as celebrated as its success at the time would suggest. I still enjoy it but there's quite a lot of early Rihanna tracks I'd revisit before this one.

Posted by: jlj 10th September 2020, 03:30 PM

I prefer this to We Found Love tbh.

This is still brilliant for me! A deserved #1 for her even if it did debut at #2 behind Queen of the UK at the time Cheryl!

I don’t think we’ll ever get a pure Europop sounding banger like this again from her sad.gif but this definitely amongst her all time best for me even to this day.

Posted by: Jord 12th August 2023, 12:25 PM

Impressive. cheer.gif

The start of arguably the most iconic period in Rihanna’s career.
