In my Top 300 Singles of the 1980's, I have the Top 246 selling 400,000 - or more - copies.
Other people - who estimated, (mainly), the Top 300 of the 1980's, may well decide that
more than 246 Singles sold 400,000, or more. Then again - they may decide that less than
246 Singles managed it.

Madonna? I've never heard of her!

Is it her who sang, 'Mama Don't Screech', 'Young Pup', & 'Rogue'? Like I said - never heard of the Woman!
Was she in that Musical - 'Ryvita'?

As ALL of his Hits are Selling once again - as Downloads - there is no point - at this stage
- in trying to work out how many his Hits sold in the 1980's.

I know someone at The OCC. I'll ask him if The OCC will compile Michael's Top 30, (or Top 50),
UK Best Selling Singles/Songs, for the UK Media/Chart Fans. It may be best for any such List to
be compiled later in 2009 - when the current level of his Downloads have had time to drop a bit.
So that the bulk of his Downloads - June, July, & August, can be added in.....

The reason Flashdance is showing up as certified gold on some sites is because after 1989 gold certification required 400,000 copies however before this it was 500,000 and they just haven't took this in to account. So it could well have sold 400,000+ and still be certified silver as it was released in 1983

Here is a chart of solo women of the 1980s with estimated sales. I've collated the information from Record Mirror and Music Week over the years, plus recent charts broadcast by the Official Charts Company. Sales are restricted to between 1980 and 1989.

UK Singles Sales 1980 to 1989 - Solo Women

Title Artist Year Est. Sale
1 The Power Of Love - Jennifer Rush 1985 1,320,000
2 Fame - Irene Cara 1982 975,000
3 Into The Groove - Madonna 1985 820,000
4 Woman In Love - Barbra Streisand 1980 780,000
5 Feels Like I’m In Love - Kelly Marie 1980 750,000
6 Like A Virgin - Madonna 1984 725,000
7 Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler 1983 675,000
8 Chain Reaction - Diana Ross 1986 675,000
9 I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue 1988 650,000
10 Together We Are Beautiful - Fern Kinney 1980 650,000
11 I Feel For You - Chaka Khan 1984 645,000
12 I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) - Whitney Houston 1987 640,000
13 Move Closer - Phyllis Nelson 1985 635,000
14 9 To 5 - Sheena Easton 1980 615,000

Women as a named featured artist, sales from 1980 to 1989:

a Especially For You - Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan 1988 950,000
b I Know Him So Well - Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson 1985 870,000
c The Only Way Is Up - Yazz and the Plastic Population 1988 720,000

Female groups, sales 1980 to 1989:

i Frankie - Sister Sledge 1985 680,000

There have been some reappraisals of sales since the 1980s as the chart compilers have: 1) gathered together over the counter record sales direct from companies (shipments less returns) and 2) built better computer models of the marketplace through experience. So some of the above figures are likely to have altered. I believe that the top 3 and a to c are pretty accurate.

Kylie minogue was the first female to have her first 9 singles sell over 200,000:

I should be so lucky 675,000
Got to be certain 274,000
The loco-motion 439,000
Je ne sais pas pour quoi 315,000
Especially for you 980,000
Hand on your heart 450,000
Wouldnt change a thing 325,000
Never too late 200,000
Tears on my pillow 235,000
Better the devil you know 230,000

I don't think even madonna has achieved that.

On the subject of Kylie Minogue. When the OCC produced a list of her biggest selling singles back in June last year. They put Give Me Just A Little More Time from 1992 at number 7, this suggests sales of around 320,000. However its sales in 1992 were only almost 140,000, which means it would have sold around 180,000 ! in downloads since 2004? Surely this is a mistake?

01 Can't Get You Out Of My Head
02 Especially For You
03 I Should Be So Lucky
04 Hand On Your Heart
05 The Loco-Motion
06 Wouldn't Change A Thing
07 Give Me Just A Little More Time
08 Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi
09 Got To Be Certain
10 Spinning Around
