 GEZZA’S FOURTH CHRISTMAS CHART- 1988  It wasn’t the favourite, nor the second favourite for that matter, but this was the year that Cliff and Christmas became the same. “Mistletoe & Wine” was first heard by Cliff in Late 1987 but too late to enter the race for the festive chart topper that year so he sat patiently on the record re-writing some of the lyrics to make it more festive. In the week ending 3rd December the odds on the Christmas No 1 were:   9-4 Kylie/ Jason 5-2 Bros 11-4 Cliff Richard 10/1 Bobby McFerrin 12/1 Angry Anderson, U2, Breathe 14/1 Shakin Stevens, Pet Shop Boys 16/1 Phil Collins/ A-ha!/ Erasure And that week Bros entered at No 2 and Cliff slipped into No 7 a move which, unknown at the time, probably played a massive part in Cliff beating Kylie and Jason that year. At the time top of the pops had a massive effect on the charts and performing virtually guaranteed that your track would go up the charts and both Cliff and Bros performed that week whilst Kylie and Jason couldn’t as they were still to chart. Bros, being frontloaded and largely fanbase by this point, retreated to No 4 whilst Cliff sprang 7-1 beating Kylie and Jason thanks to his TOTP exposure. Once No 1 of course then the publicity would kick in and sales would accelerate away from the competition, this of course meant that weekly TOTP performances would be guaranteed for him whilst Kylie/ Jason, who were stuck at No 2, would only be played every other week as was the rule. In truth, that “Especially For You” kept up so well with Cliff is a surprise and the total of 165k would have been enough for a No 1 in any other week that year. 1- MISTLETOE & WINE- Cliff Richard (210,000) 2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (165,000) 3- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL E.P- Erasure (77,000) 4- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (75,000) 5- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (59,000) 6- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (53,000) 7- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (51,000) 8- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (47,000) 9- LOCO IN ACAPULCO- Four Tops (42,000) 10- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (41,000) |

I have to admit "Miseltoe and Wine" isn't THAT bad! Prefer "St Saviour's Day" more. Feel bad for Kylie/Jason duet, Erasure and Angry Anderson - ALL would have been worthier choices imo.

 GEZZA’S FIFTH CHART OF CHRISTMAS- 1999  A Christmas chart with the added bonus of being the millennium No 1 to boot which was quite quickly narrowed down to a fight between Westlife and Cliff Richard at least in the bookies eyes at any rate. A re-issued “Imagine” and a few novelty records in the form of Mr Hankey and the Cuban Boys and the outside chances of Steps, S Club 7, and a charity version of “It’s Only Rock N Roll” completed the pre Christmas favourites. Pete Waterman had produced the final No 1 single of the 80s (Band Aid II’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”) and was eager to replicate the feat in the 90s and thought the track that Westlife performed in the ITV “Abbamania” in 1999 might prove just the ticket. The group were on a hot streak accumulating three No 1 singles on the trot and as soon as they announced they were going for the festive chart topper they became hot favourites, the opposite in fact of Cliff who’s “Millennium Prayer” was scheduled for a November release and given no hope whatsoever of being No 1 let alone at Christmas time. Cliff was wise though, promoting his single through the church and tapping into an underused market to spend three weeks at the top before the big chart was announced causing many a popstar (including the likes of George Michael) to denounce the single and its alleged awfulness.  From the beginning though Westlife were in the lead selling more than twice as many copies of IHAD/ SITS as they ever sold in a week before of any of their previous hits, yet even Cliff increased his sales too for a fourth week in a row but to no avail, this was one Christmas where Cliff wouldn’t triumph. 1- I HAVE A DREAM/ SEASONS IN THE SUN- Westlife (213,000) 2- THE MILLENNIUM PRAYER- Cliff Richard (170,000) 3- IMAGINE- John Lennon (148,000) 4- COGNOSCENTI VS INTELLEGENSIA- Cuban Boys (104,000) 5- TWO IN A MILLION/ YOU’RE MY NUMBER ONE- S Club 7 (92,000) 6- RE-REWIND THE CROWD SAY BO SELECTA- Artful Dodger Ft Craig David (83,000) 7- SAY YOU’LL BE MINE/ BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW- Steps (83,000) 8- MR HANKEY THE CHRISTMAS POO- Mr Hankey (70,000) 9- BARBER’S ADAGIO FOR STRINGS- William Orbit (69,000) 10- KISS (WHEN THE SUN DON’T SHINE)- Vengaboys (66,000) |

Was gutted that Alice Deejay's Back In My Life just eased out of the top ten to #11 for that Xmas chart! They returned to the top ten the following week for the last chart of the millennium and spent a few more weeks inside it iirc. Had no idea Steps had sold as much as 83k for that lowly (for their standards) #7 debut! The Millennium Prayer is indeed appalling, perhaps my least favourite song of all time, but it still would have been funny and fitting to see it as the Xmas #1, if only because radio and TV wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!
